HOMEBOY INDUSTRIES
In 1992, as a response to the civil unrest in Los Angeles, a Jesuit Priest by the name of Father Gregory Boyle formed Homeboy Industries to create businesses that provide training, work experience, and above all, the opportunity for rival gang members to work side by side.
Located in Boyle Heights, which is said to have the largest gang
concentration in Los Angeles, Homeboy Industries offers free programs,
including counseling, education, tattoo removal, job training and job
placement. -- enabling young people to redirect their lives and
provide them with hope for their future. Since its inception, Homeboy
Industries has grown into several ventures including, Homeboy Bakery:
Homeboy Silkscreen, Homeboy / Homegirl Merchandise, Homeboy
Graffiti Removal, Homeboy Maintenance, and Homeboy Landscaping.
"You can see guys who used to shoot each other working together--
there's a profound symbolic value to seeing former enemies work side by
side."
