Indie... Gone

Well, as you many of you have mentioned, Indie is officially over and done with. This is final nail in the coffin of LA terrestrial radio as there is really nothing else on the dial worth listening to for an extended period of time. The remaining rock stations in this city are so drenched in corporate mediocrity... They will play any and all popular genres so they can sell ad space and ultimately stand for nothing in the process. It is a dark day for the up and coming artists in LA. I am going to start doing shows again on Spread Radio Live for the time being. As for the car, looks like I'll have to get that Sirius Satellite Radio Service after all! There is no way I'm gonna be a slave to the right side of my FM dial.

Here is the final Dark Matter on Indie 103.1FM.

Todd and I have also decided to part ways with ManiaTV. We will continue to shoot our pieces and make them available to you online, but we will no longer be connected with Mania. They might continue to stream the past episodes but there will be no new content. We had a blast doing shows over there and when we find a new home, we will certainly let you know.

Wow, lot's of changes already for 2009. I've lived in LA for over 18 years and every time a cool radio station comes along, it never survives. Do you have any idea if Steve Jones is going to try to find another radio gig? Please let us know if you do. I would love for him to get a show on Sirus.

There's one piece of good news, SRL again!!! This is one of the few times I've looked at the glass half full.

As sad as it is for the good people in the LA area to lose Indie (which was a great station, great concept and great for up and coming bands) I can't but feel a little gitty because we get SRL back! :-)
And I kind of had a feeling about you leaving mania....my feeling was once they started "bleeping" your language it felt (to me) it lost the original concept of what you visioned the show to be-free of the "contraints" you would have on a FDC regulated station. Part of the charm of the show was you and Todd being able to speak to your guests freely (and they in turn doing the same). Hopefully Todd and yourself can resurect it somewhere on some other form but the way you want it to be!

There’s only one way to go from here, and that’s up...talk about endless opportunities that are now at your fingertips (“that’s what she said”)...even more so than before. Perhaps their sales/marketing team was weak as Indie Music definitely has a niche in the market. In fact, any business that has strong management as well as an exceptional sales/marketing team at its core should be able rise above downturns in the economy and other challenges that surface within the business including competition. As far as selling Ads, you frequently mentioned Pinkberry,...advertising can take on another realm in terms of how it’s presented to the audience...does not have to be the standard commercialized pitches that we so often hear...but Dave Navarro mentioning in “conversation” that he frequents Pinkberry and in those 15 minutes he’s eating that frozen dessert thinks about nothing else...those comments are advertising and the station should get paid for it. This isn’t the end; it’s only the beginning to focus on bigger and better opportunities....and speaking of bigger and better, how about Porn. In fact, there is no time like the present and at the beginning of the New Year (in New York preferably). However, in the meantime, I will have to check out the Spread show as I’m clueless to what it's like.

I knew it DN, but I can't believe it... I’m so sadden…I really took a linking to Indie, I even tuned in from work. DAMN IT! But, I enjoyed SRL too, I remember you were doing SRL when your purple ottomans were delivered…awww. SRL was nice, intimate and I loved the phone conversations to Riss and Todd.

And regards to SPREAD TV, maybe you can go back to a more personal setting like at the Dragon Fly that was great, not that your new set didn’t kick ass, but the Dragon Fly was awesome.

I’m sure you have so much going on already. So take a breather, relax but…

HURRY UP FUCKER..lol

Take Care, God Bless and enjoy your weekend.

Love Always and Munchos!

WHAT THA?? is all i can say, I am sorry about indie Dave that was such a cool radio station...
And Mania TV, I knew something was up when i checked it out the other day and I didn't even recognize it....Seems to be looking alittle mainstream.
I know you are the type of person to buck the system you and Todd will be back doing "yaw thang" soon enough....
Take a break, Smell the roses and come back with bigger and better.
You know that us die hards will be here waiting...
Again Sorry about indie...
Love and Stuff...S.. xx

I'm really disappointed and sad to hear about both Indie/Dark Matter and the Spread TV shows going down the toilet. I was living in hope of one day being able to ring in to Dark Matter! I always missed the SRL shows because they were on at the wrong time for the UK time difference - here's hoping I'll catch one of the new ones live.

I initially thought you were saying you and Todd had split up!! Thankfully not! I have to admit I was slightly surprised by the way the Spread shows were going re venue, language, etc. but I accepted it as a means to an end - to get your show to more people. It did appear to be changing from your original statements about the freedom of the internet. However, honestly, wouldn't you have got bored doing the same type of show every week for years?! From the 2 and a half years I've been visiting 6767, my impression is that you thrive on change and would hate to spend a lot of time doing the same show every week (I know you did CFR for years but I got the impression you normally made up a playlist and then just turned up for the 2 hours!, perhaps I'm wrong?!).

Anyhow, I know you'll reappear with something, but I will miss hearing your voice every week :(

...............and your totally inappropriate banter.

Sucks about Indie and SpreadTV, but like they say when one door closes another opens? I knew something was up with ManiaTV because when I went there to try to watch the old episodes not too long ago, the On-Demand future for the show was completely GONE and SpreadTV wasn't under "Browse Shows" anymore.... went from being ManiaTV's #1 show to a no show. Mania's decision to cut up the shows and not show them in their full entirety towards the end (amongst the censorship), I thought it was taking away from the show imo so I know you and Todd can only go up and it won't be limited. Although you did lie to me when I asked you two what was up with SpreadTV and you said you'd be back for just one more season haha ;).

So Indie is going to still be happening via Internet? I hope so, but welcome back SRL. Things will be alright in more ways than one.... 4 more days :).

Much Love and Respect,
-Kirsten

Wow. Well...new year, new beginnings! Over the many years I've been around, I've come to greatly admire your constant drive to move forward into new and unchartered territories for yourself. I have no doubt you guys will be bringin the entertainment in more than one way in 09! And bring on the SRL...that's gonna be fun. :)

I think radio has been dead for a long time. It is a dying medium to some extent. At least for music. The day I got my Ipod I stopped listening to Radio. Partly because the music sucks. But mostly because of the repitiion. I hate hearing the same single once every hour. With Ipods you can go days without hearing a repeated song. And to tell you the truth I don't feel indie was that different. Yes the music was better but it was still very repetitive and thus hard to listen to for extended periods of time. And even in the beginning. They played bands like Green Day non stop. I mean I love the Ramones but I don't need to hear them every hour.

99% of the time I listen to my Ipod.

A general question for 6767 regulars: DN had a lovely coat (black/ blood red lining/ leather cuffs and lapels). Does anyone know the label? I would love to own one of these and cannot track it down... Thanks

Posted by: Alex [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 16, 2009 06:33 PM

Robin, you couldn't have said it better. I agree with you 100%.

In regards to Mania TV... it's been all down hill since their re-org and changed their format.

Long live SRL!!! Impromptu shows, Todd on the phone while taking out the trash and endless banter!!! *I still rock my shirt and hoodie with pride.

Posted by: LadyM [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 16, 2009 06:54 PM

P.S. Dave... Could you give us a heads up about anything special *cough~JAtour~cough* coming up. Some of us might need to book airline tickets.

Posted by: LadyM [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 16, 2009 06:59 PM

Alex, you might need to have that coat custom made for you. I actually made a version of the "frock" that Dave wore in the GAP adds.

Posted by: LadyM [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 16, 2009 07:09 PM

Awh Dave I'm sorry to hear about Indie.
I am a listener and I dreamed of my band being featured on the show.
By the way, please tour w/ Jane's Addiction... please.

radio...well video killed the radiostar way back...then rock n roll was dead according to lenny kravitz and yes repetition is like groundhog day...but dave does try to be alternate...and can play with a more radical approach because he isn't beholden to any affiliated group that may try to control his direction or language or subject matter due to be it being too hot for the corporates of america to handle...and has introduced some different interesting music and some alternative current affairs type political programmmes well not that different it was like a full on obama campaign really... i pods are fine but it's like a horse with a bridle on kind of annoying being that personally wired up i prefer to have music coming from a distance so that my whole being can feel the soundwaves bounce off it so i'd spend cash on festival or concert tix before i bought an ipod...bathe in the sound of guitars rather than get it piped in my eardrums directly from a prerecorded state it's such secondhand news...i like being in a live music atmosphere foremost as in near stage at a gig...standing beneath some sweating guy on an electric ...but i do like radio it's impromptu more personal and radio djs are really good at saying things that are not premeditated or rehearsed that give you a laugh...they must get libel and slander cases all day...often they are not that well educated they just did a quick media course et voila they are telling britney spears where to go and how to get there...i love it...radio is mainstream it's archaic but it's live convo...surely as technology develops it'll be totally erased and we'll lose the personal touch it'll be all robotically engineered by INTERGALACTIC FORCES from the outermost planets...that will never say words like ''man that was totally fuckin awesome'';)xo

That's cool...

Too bad about indie but mania sucked ass, glad to hear it! Keep playing bro! That's where it's at! Jane's is more vital and needed than ever before, without a doubt.

Crikey. That's bad news about Indie, and sorry that Spread Ent' on Mania TV turned out not to be a longer lasting relationship. I love SRL always got such a buzz for catching one of your shows live. Glad that you and Todd have decided to keep doing what you're great at, the shows were fantastic, the way you relate to your guests and them to you is where the magic lies and to edit that destroys the alchemy. Hope you have a good weekend DN. Love to all. x.x.x

Posted by: vixen [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 17, 2009 02:20 AM

so how will we know when SRL is live? i haven't had a buddy list in ages.

i'm so over the recession and hearing about the 2 best cities in America being bankrupt...sounds like indie is just another victim of this economic fallout. i know there are new and much better opportunities around the corner...if we can all be patient.

Dave, Steel Panther is the greatest thing to ever crappen to music ever! And your interview was amazing, but it seems to be gone forever. Its not even one of the shows still on Manias site. Is there anyway possible that you can make a download available for us (or just me)? Thanks.

Even as a relative newcomer to the 6767 universe, I can sense that there has been a major disturbance in the force.

I will miss Dark Matter -- I hope you can bring Steven Hawking back somehow in your next venture.

I don't know anything about Spread Radio -- how does one tune in?

Posted by: Rgirl32 [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 18, 2009 02:58 PM

Well I hope you are going to include lots of videos of you doing totally inappropiate things.

You know this blog used to piss me off, because I would be poor, and working hard, and look at the people around me working hard,e.g men struggling to to support their families who could only afford to go out once every two weeks and THEN I would come on here and read about you being worn out after one first class flight, attending strip clubs, buying king sized condoms and shagging porn stars and so forth.

But now i have changed my view. Lets face it give those men at work the money and fame and like hell would they be tolerating their frumpy nagging old wife, changing shitty nappies, taking their little dears to the park every saturday, standing around looking depressed and henpecked with all the other Dads, no! of course they'd boot their wife out, hire a glamourous nanny and be esconsed in that Playboy mansion like a shot!
Lets be realistic.

I am becoming a fan of people being inappropriate as long as it doesn't hurt anyone, you only live once, and when life has been shit to you it kind of makes you want to break the rules and do what you want.

If you are taking sunday tens, do you know anything about coldsores I have the most massive one on my lip. I never usually get one, it is a volcano of pus taking up one side of my mouth, everyone keeps staring at it. I looked it up apparantly you can get them from oral sex but thats not the case in my case. The only thing i have been doing differently recently is taking vitamin tablets but I can't think that this would cause coldsores. It is of some concern to me.

Posted by: tiffanybean [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 19, 2009 03:20 AM

I am even further depressed as apparantly there is now a link between coldsores and alzheimers. Though in a way this is not deperessing as it means its treatable with antvirals. Lets hope its a mouth ulcer. B vits really work as well, well a bit.

Posted by: tiffanybean [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 19, 2009 03:51 AM

Yeah the coldsore has kind of gone down now and because i drank some red wine after went a kind of purple colour which was interesting, . Also at work today all these white bits kept falling off it onto my tongue whilst trying to talk on the phone so I'd of spit them out on my hand and stare at them while talking to old age pensioners.
Are the white bits just pus? Must research this. Its a whole new experiencce for me. I had mouth ulcers before. Maybe its just a massive mouth ulcer. yes it has definitely gone down, but there is a strange taste in my mouth.

Posted by: tiffanybean [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 19, 2009 11:35 AM

Do you think the strange taste in my mouth is actually from Pus? Yuk. It reminded me of having tonsilitis, all those white bits on your tonsils. Its quite cool in a way. you keep staring in the mirror and admiring all the pus your body has generated with a complete feeling of awe. That is the one plus side of having tonsillitis. I don't mean to brag here, but I have actually been hospitalised for days with tonsillitis before, and the casualty doctor said they were the nastiest pair of tonsils he had seen for a while. LOVED the drip. Well must apoloigise for leaving stupid futile comments on your blog. I can guaruntee for sure by next year there will be no comments, unless God allows the internet in heaven, I am sure Satan allows the internet in hell, but knowing my luck I'll go to heaven and Rosamund Shackleton from school who used to preach born again Billy Graham Christian stuff will be there, and I'll say do YOU know who stole my cool black and white checked scarf from the cloakrooms? If so, I shall be reporting them to Satan.

I meant to comment on this the other day, but got sidetracked...

It's a shame to hear about Indie and ManiaTV. To be honest, the only reason I even knew about either one was because of the 'Dave connection'... So in fact, you were doing both of them a favor!

Indie 103 seemed like a great radio station... a rare gem and oasis of coolness in a dull, corporate wasteland. Too bad. I must believe that over the course of time, originality and inventiveness will prevail once again, somehow. With the way technology keeps progressing and evolving, the entire media world is probably going to change very drastically over the next decade or so.

For now, it would be great to watch/listen to SRL or some similar type show. Looking forward to whatever is next...

All the best,

Tiffanybean, you have been visited far too many times by the Madness Hamsters.............

S.B, i know, I told you I pissed them off by burying their little comrades alve when a chld. but how was I to know they were in a state of deep hibernation? but yes the hamsters have visted, in fact I have one lodged in my brain right as I write, I think that explains the pain above my left eye. I'm going to lie down and cry now. It gets you down being mad sometimes. you just lie and hope and pray for your sanity to be restored but then the next day its all just the same.

What's up Dave? Too bad Indie is going down... Does that mean there'll be no more Dark Matter?

By the way, have you seen the latest Pumpkins video for the song G.L.O.W.? Cool stuff.

I'm looking forward to your new post about some things fun. Take care! ;)

So sorry to hear this Dave. To be honest I have been on hiatus from any CF and even your new show Dark Matters and I am sorry this southern girl hasn't shown much love lately with my busy schedule. However I do appreciate what you have brought to us in the CF past. You and Billy were quite entertaining when I had nothing better to do on a Saturday night.

Sorry to hear that you are putting Mania TV out to pasture. Some great Internet crap; with much respect.

Okay I have NO objections to more SRL from you. To be honest, I really enjoyed that the most from you. You just bring out your best damn CD's or MP's and just kick some serious ass with the tunes. Just YOU kicking back and sharing what you love, MUSIC!!

Keep that chin up. Can't wait to see what else is in store for you.

/hugs
Tracy~

It was so great to meet you in Las Vegas at Tao. Thanks for putting me [E.Boggia] on your guest list. I chatted with your friend Todd for a bit. He's nice. Your security guard guy was super nice as well. Sorry to hear about your radio show. Just a thought, 'cause I'm watching it tonight, but if you get a chance, you should watch Woody Allen's, "Manhattan". Sometimes it can just hit the spot. Cheers!

Dave, my man... history is going down tomorrow. Out with Bush, in with Obama... where will you be at? I think Billy posted a bulletin saying something about Camp Freddy performing but I can't remember when or if it was for an inauguration party or something related because I know ALOT of people are going to be partying tomorrow. Anyways, it's our time tomorrow. Along with Obama, WE THE PEOPLE, need to come together so we can all reach that goal of change because not only one man can do it. Willing to put in some work?

Much Love and Respect,
