Some Answers
ATL Guest List: Jackie Carbone + 1, Michael Foster +1, Jeremiah Johnson +1
1. Does Camp Freddy rehearse their sets ?
We used to, but with the nature of our shows and the guests we invite, we are never really certain as to what the set is going to be until sound check, sometimes not until show time. We generally agree on a proposed set based on what the singers want to do and kind of brush up on the songs on our own at home, then iron them out at sound check. This is primarily why we sound so "loose" on certain songs. Some say "loose", I say raw! haha You can usually tell what we are least comfortable with based on how much we stare at Chris Chaney for the changes! That guy hears a song and knows it and remembers the arrangements as if he has some kind of musical photographic memory. Truly a remarkable musician. More often than not, by the time we have something down cold we have a break for over a month and the whole process starts over. It's actually kind of fun, cramming for shows the day of. There is a level of stress that makes pulling it off all that much more rewarding.
2. Do you think that it's possible it's a sincere holiday wish to the receiver, because they want YOU to know they still exist?
HAHAHA! No! The word "mass" implies that the message hasn't been sent to anyone specifically.
3. Hi Dave, just wondering if you still have a good relationship with Anthony Kiedis?
Yes of course! I honestly love Anthony as if he were my brother. I feel that way about all the guys and even John and I had an opportunity to spend some time since my departure. I remain a friend, a fan and a student of RHCP!
Have u had a chance to sit down and listen to Chinese Democracy all the way through? Your thoughts on it?
Yes. I have to say that I pretty much love it. The way I have been describing it has been 70% awesome and 30% really weird, but after a few listens... The weird becomes awesome again. I don't know if it's the songs or the fact that I just enjoy hearing that guy's voice or both, but I am a fan. It's not GnR as we know it... It feels more like an Axl solo record... Probably because as music lovers, we were able to get a feel for the old GnR dynamics and the personalities of each member in the band. I know very little about this band so it's hard to connect with each member sonically like I did before. People have been commenting on how long it took to make but I kind of don't believe he was working on all THESE songs the whole time. I'm sure there have been versions, stuff that got scrapped, breaks, line up changes, personal time... I'm speculating of course, but having worked on so many projects I know that there are a million things that go down before you even decide on the track listing.
4. Do you think a person is ever too old to take guitar lessons? Have you taken any instrument lessons... as an adult?
Absolutely not! With music, in fact, with everything in life.... It is always a good thing to do what interests you no matter your age.... Provided it won't harm you. I have taken classical piano lessons as an adult and as far as guitar, I am taught something new everyday by the musicians I play with. In fact, playing with Eric, Stephen and Perry again has already made me a better guitar player. There comes a time when your teachers are the ones you create with. Learning to listen is a huge part of that and I have never been in a situation that requires more attention than Jane's. My time with CF is a totally different learning experience in that adaptability is required. Playing with so many different musicians begs the flexibility to adapt to their sensibilities while maintaining your own creative presence.

Yes man!
Guitar lessons are cool but at a point it's up to us to be our own teachers, along with those we play with. No matter what, the learning never stops. Hell, I heard of a dude (very cool blues player) who didn't become known until he was 66. It's important to do what you want and never give up!
I really enjoyed reading this as I pretty much feel the same way about Chinese Democracy, only I found nothing weird yet still not 100% aewsome... All good though!
The only place I disagree is on the harm front. Harm is a matter of opinion but harming others is a whole other trip. I say, as long as it hurts no one or even if it hurts the perpetrator yet they enjoy that hurt, then it's good.
Unsolicited opinion, I know... Oooops!
LOL
All the best with Jane's, CF and everything else DN, very rad overall. Wishfully, I'll be checking out a show in '09.
All the best as always!

Just wondering... do you listen to The Mars Volta at all? If so, what are your thoughts?

It's nice to know the 'silent' member of Camp Freddy is actually the VITAL one. "Chris....heeeellllllpppp us!" Are you that hard up for $$$? I'll never forget the night you played that tune from Axl. Billy's reaction was priceless..."Uh...yeah....oooookay". You practically orgasmed. If the rest of the album is ANYTHING like the 1 or 2 tunes they've been playing.....I'll freakin' pass! HIs voice is shot! Like he can dupe what he did LIVE? The one I heard reminded of me of "Wreckless Life". To each his own.....

i haven't heard any of it yet ''chinese democracy''it's drawn a lot of interest over the internet probably one of the most heralded album releases...like building the great wall of china it seemed...last i heard of axl he was being held down by a security dude in germany with a tazer in a hotel lobby dispute and being arrested that was in 05 i think ha funny stuff maybe not for axl at the time but he keeps on being notorious...he does well on piano in a few guns n roses songs too...november rain he has the whole crescendo thing happening...
...mmm yep you'd look sexily soulful on the piano dave...now you have that chopin flick of the hair going on...channel all that musical energy into some serene notes on keys not that i don't adore guitar but there is something about pianos that is timeless elegance...off to vienna to do the operatic thing...buy an original gustave klimt as well while you're there;)

Love your replies!! Total insight into how it feels to play as you do for the bands that you do - thank you as usual for being so open. Never realised how much of a balance it has to be to retain your sense of creative self whilst you're playing with some fantastic yet strong musicians - cos you always come across as exactly that - strong creative and individual. I started playing bass after flying over to visit a couple of Canadian musician friends I had met on myspace - one drummer, one guitarist who both said "Noooo don't take lessons teach yourself!" Suddenly started listening to music like I'd never heard it before - 'sound' just opened up. Was so impatient to get better went for lessons for a while even though I was almost as old as everyone elses parents! Kids don't realise how easy they have it LOL!! As for mass texts - yep totally agree with you - to stick someone on a list and not speak individually stinks. DN you can give me your number lol I would never do that to you! :)
Happy Sunday!

Thanks for answering my question Dave. Maybe I'm confused, but I assumed you have a some kind of relationship with these people if they have your phone number.

I'll second that idea of you playing the piano Dave. Just think of it this way, Trent Reznor does it... so dark and intense haha. There's this video of him pouring his heart out in the middle of "Hurt" and it was only him on the stage when someone in the crowd decided to throw a bottle or something onstage and hits him or comes close to it and Trent flips the keyboard and mic stand over and storms off stage. Have to appreciate Trent :p.

Dave,
How do you decide which questions to answer?
Do some just flip a switch inside you and set your fingers flying across the keyboard?
Do you instantly reject those that are:
-- too personal
-- too off-the-wall
-- too boring?
How about a little insight? '-)

If you are still taking questions...do you have ur own take on the old old quotation..."life's a beach, so you fry." My own personal take on this is.."you go insane..then you die." Pessimistic I know, but there are some moments of joy to be found then and there in a state of permanent delusional insanity. Anyway, I have to advise you, if you are planning on trying to impress Rachel Niner, PLEASE take her to the Mark Twain Hotel in Hollywood. I strongly reccommend this for a romantic soiree. The atmosphere there could not fail make a permanent impression on her and her feelings towards you. If the bloke in Reception seems a bit bipolar its actually because he has a twin brother. One is miserable, one smiles, a bit too much!

To Rgirl32:don't hold your breath. I've been trying to figure that out for abt. a yr. now. To tiffanybean:Rachel has a boyfriend/fiance. Guess you didn't catch that part of the show. But it seems like a good suggestion.Do you have any suggestions for places to eat? Reasonable prices. I have a friend who will be there in the spring. She's staying in West Hollywood. Thanks.

To Furian femme..that was actually a joke, its okay, no-one finds my jokes funny i am used to it. I do miss some of the shows unfortunately. No I don't know any good places to eat, but generally I just get a packet of noodles from the local convenience store and mix this with frozen peas, a boiled egg maybe pesto if i win five pounds on the scratch cards and really want to put the boat out treat myself. But if ur friend is planning to stay there i would reccommend this place. Great reviews on the internet!...e.g......."If you are a rehabilitating crack addict then this is the place for you!" And.."This is not a place for travellers.. don't.ever.stay.there."

Hi again Dave and I doubt you're gonna answer cos you've already done questions and it isn't actually about you so it feels dodgy but I wonder often if A.K has changed at all personally (with people he's close to)? Would be unrealistic to expect RHCP not to I guess but Anthony is really not the same externally since the band made it huge commerically, I don't mean to be critical, just an observation. Can tell in interviews and on stage by his interactions and how he is. Was and am a huge supporter / fan since the beginning, always will be. I see them whenever they are in the U.K - and it must drive them nuts but seems that Flea somehow deals better. Last time they were here in Manchester a bunch of fans went over to their hotel and Anthony refused to come down as he felt they fans weren't into the music - Flea met people and said when he got talking to them they were. It must be difficult to deal with on one level - the huge commerical success after they've been around for the time that they have - they probably can't go anywhere nowadays without being recognised when they used to do local walkarounds in whichever town they visited and it annoys me as an observer on another level that that didn't happen to you to the same extreme cos you deserve it just the same but fuck knows if you'd even want it? Then I wonder whether or not their record company screws them over with pressure for albums and touring or if they have the perceived independence and freedom that you seem to have musically. Ok I am now going to do some work quietly. Sorry everyone and thanks Dave. Too much caffiene clearly. But honestly, I do wonder.
Happy NEW year may it bring you all good things.

Lastly - used to email Blackie before they got so big they changed the website, he sent me a ton of personal stuff in return as I used to send things over for the band, I guess aside from you he's the only other person who have ever known who actually connected and talked to the fans as if we were human / extended family. And info about Flea and his seeing the fans and AK not was on their website too in his letters, not just hearsay from me!

To FurianFemme:
I won't hold my breath. '-)
I was just hoping to catch a glimpse into the magical mind of a musical mahatma. (How's that for alliteration?)
Anyway, I think I've solved the marvelous mystery (there it goes again!)
I think he only answers questions that are consistant with the Dave Navarro "brand."
Am I right, Dave?
Oops! There's another one of those pesky questions. '-)

Interesting answers, good to read.
Re the mass text thing, I discovered my husband had done that to people on his phone this Christmas. I asked him whether he thought it impersonal and a bit lazy and he was offended by the implication! He'd sent his texts with good intent (he'd probably also sent cards too but...) so my point is, perhaps not all the 60 million mass texts you received on Christmas Day were thoughtless!
In case I don't get another chance. Have a fab New Year and I wish everyone a great 2009!........SB
To K-Nicole, re the madness hamsters....
Every night they visit you,
Every night they come,
And bit by bit,
They steal your brain,
And feed it to their Mum
....sounds like your 50 e-mail fan needs a visit, or perhaps already has! If she is e-mailing you that much, she is obviously insanely jealous of you in some way, or perhaps that is the only way she can get off. Must go, I have number 51 to write...oops!!!

Talking about RHCP... the rumors will never stop flowing for Anthony. Apparently he's now in desperate need of a kidney transplant because he almost went into kidney failure over the summer and wasn't doing too good at all but Blackie calls bullshit. I didn't hear anything about it either until a couple of days ago. However, he did look ill and EXHAUSTED after the SA tour. You'd think with them getting older and all of them having families now (with an exception for John) they would take longer breaks here and there in-between tour legs but they didn't and it showed in their performances greatly...
They even TRIED to manage to pull off 3 gigs in 24 hours... played a show in Paris, flew to London to do the Live Earth gig, and then to Copenhagen... crazy. Yeah, they pulled it off but the energy... the performances wasn't too great, it wasn't there. I was recording the Live Earth gig and it just wasn't them. One of the best things they're known for is their live shows and the energy they bring, but the last couple of legs of the SA tour... they were lacking it. Anyways, Vixen you mentioning how AK didn't want to come down and greet the fans because he felt as if they weren't fans of the music. That has happened with all of the guys now except for Chad, but Chad is ALWAYS the cool guy and is down for almost anything haha. Anyways, I guess the problem is when you're that big, you have people who will pose as fans, when actually they're part of the paparazzi or auctioneers and they will go get things signed by the guys and everything to only leave and sell the signed items on eBay and profit from it and they’re not even fans. Apparently it had been starting to get really bad and it got to the point where the "actual fans" were hurting from it. 1 of my friends on the RHCP board mentioned that she waited after the gig in the cold for about 3 hours and seen John and he took off running towards his "getaway" saying something about eBay lol.
RHCP is my favorite band... always will have mad love for them and they're one of the only bands I can listen to over and over and over again and not get tired of them at all. However, this time they really need to actually take a break (which I believe they're doing this time hopefully) and probably reevaluate were they want to go. Maybe the record company does pressure them into doing albums almost back-to-back... I've never thought of it that way but they deserve a good break and need to not rush into things. Flea is in school again and has his own music school, John has his new album "The Empyrean" coming out in Jan. 20 and it already sounds amazing and I'll be playing the crap out of it, and Chad has Chickenfoot (lovely band name) and apparently they have an album coming out next year as well.
Anyhow, I don't think anyone would ask for that... become so popular that you can't absolutely do anything. I feel for the people like Britney Spears for an example and can't even step outside because the paparazzi live outside her house. The way the paparazzi/media has become.... is ridiculous, people can't even live their lives... no wonder some people have nervous breakdowns, snap, etc. And I know Dave, you have your moments with the paparazzi as well whether it's TMZ or that one lady who was a C U Next Tuesday (now I'm going to start saying that) and people printing ridiculous shit about you, it's cool that it isn't too crazy and you can still function and do what you want to do. I don't believe anyone deserves that much attention, but I know what you're saying Vixen.... Dave is one hell of a musician/person and I don't see why people don't appreciate him more lol. Jane's, Deconstruction, OHM, TNO, and DTTAH are all masterpieces in their own little way haha. So much, that I wish Dave could/would do another solo album because I loved the album so much and still play the shit out of it (especially Slow Motion sickness and Avoiding The Angel) but I know how busy you are so it's all good homie haha.
WOW, I really don't have an excuse for this rant, no caffeine or anything and I did far more than you Vixen so I'm now going to go play Rock Band 2..... Sorry.
Much Love and Respect Dave,
-Kirsten

That little poem about Hamsters struck a real chord with me, because I had several hamsters as a child...interestingly all called Nutty, true! Nutty I, Nutty II. Nutty III. Sadly the first two nuttys met with a tragic end, due to fact we thought they were dead, but looking back they may have been in a state of deep hibernation, so we may have buried them alive. Just a warning to anyone who keeps hamsters, they do apparantly go into this catatonic state where it is really hard to feel their heartbeat because it has slowed, but in fact they are not dead. Don't try putting them into the oven to revive them either...it doesn't work. Maybe Nutty III ate my brain in revenge....

Hey Kirsten - it's the recognition that I was referring to, not the almighty obsessive explosion of hell that surrounds a person once they reach celebrity status. No one sane would necessarily actively want or seek that intrusion. These days untalented monkeys seem to attain success for doing f.a ie celebrity is not an indication of talent and that's where all the issues of paparrazzi and the vultures who cash in on commericialism come into it. I wish it were different. I guess I didn't explain myself during caffienated warblings yesterday morning!

Who really writes this blog...come on, own up! Did Dave Navarro take typing lessons, I don't think so, and I can't see him bothering to hunch over his keyboard pressing one key at a time. There's his fans thinking they are connecting with hot Dave Navarro when all the time it is a lesbian with a mustache. Or.. maybe Dave is a lesbian with a mustache. That is not meaning to insult lesbians by the way...just a joke, haha. ha? ha. Hahahaha. ha.

I suspect R Rilke is the genius behind the "The Madness Hamsters"....
Dave can probably type because he took piano lessons and he is really a 2000lb cross-dressing hamster living on an iceberg somewhere near the Arctic Circle.
(DISCLAIMER - for the sensitive types out there, I am typing bollocks and am not inferring that Dave is really a hamster, though I think there is a video of him wearing a dress somewhere)
I think I better stop or the Penguin of Death will be after me...............................SB

My own personal favourite is not about hamsters, it is about worms.
Nobody likes me, everybody hates me,
Guess I'll go eat worms,
Long, thin, slimy ones; Short, fat, juicy ones,
Itsy, bitsy, fuzzy wuzzy worms.
..actually my own little version is
Dave Navarro doesn't likes me, all his fans hate me,
Guess I'll go eat worms,
Long, thin, slimy ones; Short, fat, juicy ones,
Itsy, bitsy, fuzzy wuzzy worms.
I used to sing that a lot here in the psychiactric ward before they upped my meds. They said my singing was disturbing other patients. Pah, if they hadn't locked me away I could have been the next Barbara Streisand. AND they took my worms away.
