Answers to Questions - CF Winners
(photo: Josh Giroux) Jason Purcell + 1 and Lucy Marin + 1 - See you guys tomorrow!
Wednesday night is an all new live Dark Matter (Wed 12a-2a Indie 103.1FM) with an in studio guest. Details to follow.
1. iPhone vs. Blackberry... Where do you stand?
Without a doubt, 100% Blackberry. The iPhone is cute and all and has some really great fun apps you can add including a great browser feature... But at the end of the day I use my phone for communication via texts, emails and conversation. Personally, I am not into to the touch screen of the iPhone and I prefer the actual keyboard of the Blackberry. If the iPhone comes out with an actual keyboard, it would be hard to pass up but right now it's simply not functional for me. Some love it and can get with it's touch screen. Also, if I am gonna do anything on the net, I am gonna do it on a computer. I kind of don't care how great the browser on the phone is... It's just way too small for me. I'm also not so down with the fact that they are exclusive with their service provider.
2. Does the constant flashes bother your eyes after a while during live performances, or do you just somehow adjust to it?
The flashes aren't really a problem at all cause they kind of blend in with the lights of the venue streaming down into our eyes anyway. What has become more and more awkward is the fact that now that everybody has a camera on their phone, we generally look out to and audience who are watching the show through the screens on their phones as they snap away. We make less eye contact with about half of the room cause they are shooting the show with some digital device. I get it and appreciate the fact that people want to save memories... I guess I am just old school and miss the days when the audience was more connected without a piece of technology between the show and themselves.
3. What's the wildest rumor you've heard about yourself?
There have been several! The wildest one was that I was dead... That one was years ago and got so out of control that people were calling my family with condolences. The others are just the same old random ones that have ebbed and flowed over the past 15 years...
4. You played a cool cover of "Send me an angel" on DM Nov 19. Could you please tell me who recorded that version?
That was Zeromancer off their album Eurotrash and it's available on iTunes.
5. One of my favorite guitar effects is the "wa-wa" effect, and about 2 minutes into the album version of "Ted Just Admit It", you deliver that. However, I noticed in live versions of the song I don't hear that effect, which always gives me chills.
Yes! I love that too! It's actually a Phaser that I just happened to step on while we were recording that song. I do use an EVH Phase 90 during the live shows. Perhaps it's time to bring that back! Great call! Thanks for the reminder.
6. Have you ever been afraid of failure, has that or would that ever stop you from doing something? Or do you always go into things giving your best and wait to see what happens?
Yeah fear of any kind is, for the most part, kind of useless, although of course we all feel it. (I know... fear of falling off a building is good cause it keeps you away from the edge... etc.) I suppose that the way I look at it when it comes to fear of failure is this: "I'm already not doing x, y or z. What's the worst that can happen? The worst thing that can happen is I'm still not doing x, y or z. May as well give it a shot!" That make any sense?
7. When you ask Dan to do guitar-related stuff does he ever kinda mutter to himself "They're always after me lucky charms" as he walks away?
Constantly!!! In fact, it's getting kind of annoying! I don't know what's worse. That or the fact that I am surrounded by pipe smoke whenever he is on the side of the stage.
8. What's your favorite guitar pedal?
That's a tough call cause I use the delay and the wah a lot, usually together. I suppose if I could only choose one it would be the wah as it can help change color during solos and even act as a slight boost during dynamic parts of a song.

re: (6)
Yep, you're right. I'm already not doing what I could be doing so if I could just get over myself and stop worrying that I'm going to fuck it up and instead just do it - because currently not doing it is what's fucking it up. Thank you for the inspiration and sharing practicality! At least you always did what you wanted / needed to do - I respect you so much for that! And it all worked out. Definitely helped and made sense. Thank you. Have a fantastic gig tomorrow and a wonderful week DN.
x.x.x.x
ps: my ass is frozen, I'm crap, the fear is going and I now have to go do it cos Dave Navarro just explained how he does it lol. You're ace :)

Dave, if you get the chance to, you should check out that documentary "Dear Zachary," that was on MSNBC last night. Really sad story, but I think it can reach out to anyone...
Besides that, good answers :p.
Much Love and Respect,

DN - Tivo "Journey to the Edge of the Universe", on the NGeo channel. It's the latest stuff from the astronomers about what's out there in the universe.
Have you and Todd ever thought about going down to JPL here in LA and doing a piece for STV? I've heard it'a amazing there. If you do it, and need a free assistant that day, just let me know! haha

That fear of failure question with the "x,y,and Z" answer... That's an awesome perspective. I'll have to keep that one in mind!
Spreading the love,

i was wondering bout the dimebag tributes see them mentioned round the net sanaz was blogging last week bout him and the john lennon ''they shoot superstars don't they'' thing and how you cope with that fear or paranoia...you don't give a f*** cos it already has happened to you apparently in virtual reality gossip ha that is funny...at least they are only aiming phone cams at you...fantastic mythic like proportions of rumours show human gullibility for what it is...wa wa's are cool we need to have a bit of that...technology has changed the music industry like everything else and changed communication systems for humans in so many ways...used to have to make smoke signals to get friends over for a jam haha now they have grown a blackberry and it comes from a moneytree...talking of keyboards do you still play piano dave i read that you had lessons at a young age but preferred guitar you used one in a panic channel clip just messing about and i think i remember a white piano perhaps in your lounge room back in the day in the house you shared with carmen tommy lee has one i know he loves piano do you like to play drums sometimes like you did in some impromptu jams with perkins or is it just the guitar for you... your only musical love... and why the guitar...what is it about stringed instruments...cellos no yes...ha c'mon how many symphonies have you really composed we know you are not always onstage with beguiling women at your feet...xo i'd have this as a poster above my bed artistic black n white composition...hear no evil pose is cute too;)

That is a great picture dave, it is very natural. cute.
I have not written for a while as this "typepad" thingy is really annoying me..
I will sit and write for a while trying to get some questions in etc, then it tells me that i am not in....
How many other people are suffering with this problem????
And Dave is there something we can do to stop it from doing that.
I just hope this comment gets in...
take care

That was a fun lil' read there, cool interview.
The only thing is... Is it REALLY a good idea to fuck with your tech like that?! I mean, you do want your Guitar to stay at least somewhat in tune right? LOL!!! Plus you need the guy, you don't seem like the "I can change my own strings!" type. j/k, I'm sure Paddy's got a great sense of humour! Otherwise, I've been enjoying Dark Matter dude, looking forward to the next podcast.
Have a great show tonight man!

you seem like the kinda guy that keeps all the girls tuned so i don't see you having a problem with your own strings...once upon a time you were 16 with long dreadlocked hair...anonymous and breaking strings all on your own strength probably changing the trucks on your sk8 board to hit santa monica boulevarde all on your own...independent ha yeah it's a sk8 board brand but i imagine you are capable of being fairly independent without your tech dave...so when is the last time you had a surf or skated... are your hands and wrists insured for millions???so cute those lil flowers on your elbows too inside the stars of david tatts you amuse me always with your lil joie de vivre motifs...xolove and tinseltown blessings 67ers ...kaz
