ASK DAN Vol. 2
"I don't know!" "Yeah, I don't know either!"
OK... Maybe we went a little far with that one!
Q: I notice sometimes you have one of the 4x12's pointed backwards -- what's the point of that?
A: (Dave) I pretty much only do that when I am playing with DJ Skribble. The reason is mainly due to the fact that when he and I do our set, I am the only thing coming from the stage as his turntables and the mics are only going through the p.a. The idea is to mix the guitar through the p.a. with Skribble's tracks so the blend is even and the people up front don't get blasted by the amp facing them. When we have DJ Slynkee playing drums on stage with us, or when the front row is far enough away, I'll have the amp facing out.
Q: Also are you still using the JCM 900's sometimes I have squinted really hard at my computer screen and they look like JCM 2000's.
A: (Dave) I use the 900 for Jane's and Camp Freddy... the more organic rock set up. Sometimes I use the 2000 with Skribble and J Mello or when I'm playing with a more electronically fueled set.
Q: Does DN's rig consist of two Marshall JCM 900's for the purpose of running one for gain/distortion sounds and another for clean tones? If so is this due to the Marshall JCM 900 having only one set of tone controls which is shared by both channels, thus using two seperate heads allows for varied settings to be attained for gain and clean tones?
A: (Dave) For club shows I only use the 900 for both clean and dirty tones. If you see another head on stage, it's primarily there as a back up in case something goes wrong with the head I'm using. For larger tours I do switch between two heads... The 900 for the dirty and a Mode 4 for clean. The Mode 4 is an amazing all around head but I prefer the dirty on the 900. The clean on the Mode 4 is perfect because it can handle high output pickups without breaking up on the clean channel. It is nice to have more control over the tones when running two heads but the shared tones on the 900 hasn't ever been a problem in the smaller venues.
Q: What system do you use to toggle between the heads?
A: (Dan) We use a Whirlwind A/B Box. You can do any combo of clean, dirty, or both.
Q: What tube compliment is employed in these amps and do you use different tubes for each, are they biased differently?
A: I don't re-tube Daves heads myself. I bring them to my guy and he works his magic. But I can tell you that we use EL-34's in both heads.
Q: Dan, how does your personal rig compare with that of Dave?
A: (Dan) Well, I am a bass player in "real life." I use Musicman & Fender basses through Ampeg SVT. But one thing we have in common is that we both like simplicity. No need to have all kinds of extras if they don't help. I have no effects, but Dave has minimal effects and only what he needs to sound like himself.
Q: What is up with that white Ibanez Dave played (in the pic that accompanies the El Cid post)? I thought I saw a PRS tremolo on that instrument, can you tell us about that Guitar?
A: (Dan) I had that made for Dave recently through our friend Rob at Ibanez. Usually with Ibanez if you want a tremolo you get a Floyd Rose, but when you are teching a Floyd Rose and a string breaks it can sometimes take longer than is acceptable to change it out. So I had that one made with a floating tremolo like you find on the PRS or a Strat. Once you put the Sperzel locking tuners on it, it stays in tune 95% as well as the Floyd Rose does.

Comments
The last lot of answers I understood, these I don't!
Anyhow, I must have made my last comment the second you shut the last page down....I just want to highlight that I commented about having problems with Typekey, in case anyone else is, once I get a comment in, everything is fab, but to begin with, a nightmare.
Thanks.........................................SB

Hi SB!
Typekey has settled down now for me - but it's a little like a lady with PMS.

This was really unexpected!
I certainly didn't think you guys were ever seriously intending to answer tech stuff. Good to read and surprising! I always (well... almost always ;) enjoy hearing about others' experiences in the gear realm. Here's to the beauty of a simple rig!
KICK ASS @ THE ROXY DAVE AND DAN! ;D

I've seen Dan tech live for you on 2 coasts, he rocks--so I try to overlook the fact that he's a RED SOX fan.

VIXEN, Line 6 makes some great products. But as far as the Pod goes, it really depends on what kind of sound you're going for. If you want many different choices, I prefer the BOSS GT-6B BASS MULTI EFFECT PROCESSOR over the Line 6. If you just want a good distortion a SansAmp works great. But if you get too crazy with bass, you may as well play guitar.

Dan thank you so much. Have been confused about this and wanting to progress but not sure which direction to take - will go to the music store in town (which is great if you actually know what you want and speak Muzo but not otherwise) and try out the BOSS and compare to the amp. Thanks again for the recommendation, totally appreciated. As for playing guitar instead of bass well once I get past Nirvana and MM I will be up for trying anything lol! I hate not being able to do what I want and do it well, so I need to nail bass first as it's sorta in my blood now :) Like the best date you ever had and can't stop thinking about! Maybe that could be the blisters! x.x.

Yeah, I really don't know what you guys are talking about either. I do play bass but I'm pretty much challenged when it comes to gear so I've just been getting by knowing the basic shit; tuning, changing strings, cables, if I want some help I'll hit up a friend who knows their shit but it is really nice of you guys.
Anyways Dave, I know you're always busy and whatnot but I do have a show recommendation for you.... "True Blood" on HBO... it's now available on On-Demand and you can watch the whole season there but yeah I think you'll like it. If vampires, sex, damaged people, people turning into dogs, and chicks interest you.... this show is for you :p. Good stuff... honestly.

totally off topic and totally corny...but it's a nice encouraging way to start my day!!
I have recently been involved in the horse world..learning to ride and care for them..it's been amazing. I also love to bake...so I have decided to try and start a VERY small home made horse treat business. I started making them for the horses I care for and my friend, who has been involved in horses her entire life has been very convincing in telling me I should try to sell them...well, since I don't have a job at the moment...why not?? Right?
so I am heading to a horse show this morning and have just now finished working the numbers to see what I have spent and how much it costs to produce...
here's where it's relevant...and I'm sure only to me...but I'm gonna bore you with it anyway!! lol
It costs me $0.67 / per lb to produce
and I have spent $67.33 cents on supplies..
67 67
It can only mean good things!!
Morning 67 land!!
Wish me luck!!

Good luck with the horse bakes SweetMelis.........I know a thing or two about horses. I knew one once that would eat egg sandwiches but hated cheap chocolate cake - we knew the food was nasty if the horse wouldn't eat it!
Will this post first time?....................SB

Is it true that it is harder to play the guitar if your fingers are small and fat? Someone told me this, that I would have problems learning the guitar because my fingers were too small and fat, if this is not true it is all THEIR fault I am not a rock star instead of selling broadband.
On the subject of horses, I used to wear about eight strings of pearls to school, and one day before school I went to see this horse and he got the pearls in his mouth, broke the strings and slavered all over them. I still went to school with them on though and got told off. After, People would say... "what happened to your pearls?" I would reply..."oh a horse bit them." Really, the signs of mental instability were there at a very early age. But my point is, if a horse will eat a string of cheap plastic pearls it will eat pretty much anything.

you reminded me i must put up the fairy lights for xmas dave...break a leg doing it!did i hear you say that well honeybunch it's peculiar we hooked up in cyberland while your leg was in a black boot and my son's was in a red one from a sk8 trick i've now been having this intim8 relationship with you for two years since october 06...
..i know you did the peralta thing 4 me thanx!what would i do without a man like you...it comes down to basic instinct sweetness ha i know it was an old sharon stone movie honestly i wear undies a lot of the time whilst being interviewed by detectives...why give them the thrill!back to basic instinct have had horses since i was 10 they love anything that is edible and not poisonous they aren't stupid they are ruled by instinct they can smell a bitch or a dickhead from metres away and will kick them or bite them they can be vicious if they smell nasty and they act upon it unhesitatingly and unflinchingly why i love them ...their honesty and they don't posture or pose or make believe everything is ok if it isn't they rear they buck...i saw a girl on tv who had half her lip taken off for maltreating her horse it had been stabled and cooped up was bored and overly schooled it just let her have it one day...you get that!i am a horse whisperer i tend to foster a placid nature being one myself and yes they like baked treats but they prefer raw foods although my horse ate some wholemeal lavash bread last night;) am sure dave is now mesmerised by all this insightful horsehandling info it can get as tech as guitars but with slightly more personality than an inanimate object guitars don't decide to gallop offstage without you thank god!ha i have artistic hands i use them to do visual rather than audial art why i have to visit dave for the audial treats...bake and make some more pretty puhleeeese dN.xo loveya

I know a guy who actually got to take classical guitar lessons from Andrés Segovia and he said that Andrés had very short, fat, stubby fingers --they looked like cigars.
So, Tiffanybean, I guess that's not the reason you're not a rock star ... '-)

"...not being a gear head myself this all sounds like charlie brown's teacher to me."
LMAO @ Robin... That's EXACTLY what it sounds like when people talk 'gear' around me. How I WISH I understood this stuff; it would make my life so much easier. One day...
I agree w/ everyone that it's really cool of you guys to do this. You never know what you'll see, hear, read, and learn on 6767.
Love to all,
