J.A.
OK Before I get into this, let me just say how sorry we are to everyone who came all the way down to the show and waited in line, only to be turned away at the last minute. Evidently, the fire marshal came down and limited our audience... According to this music blog. Many of our own friends and family members were unable to attend as a result and it looks as though we are simply going to have to make it up to everybody somehow! Having said that... The night was just fantastic. La Cita is an extremely small venue with amazingly low ceilings. I have to say that it really felt like it was the "OLD SCHOOL" 1987 Jane's. A tiny little Mexican bar adorned with Christmas lights, hot sweaty and humid, loud and songs we haven't played in forever on the set including Trip Away and 1% off our very first XXX record. We had an amazing time. Eric Avery brought the bottom punk rock glue that we have been missing for years. Don't get me wrong... Our times with Flea, Martyn and Chaney will never be overlooked and we love all of them deeply... In some ways they are heavily responsible for helping us get to the place where we are now... But the fact remains that this machine cannot really run as well with after market parts. Jane's Addiction has to be fully stock in order to do what it does best. That is something that many have been saying for years but I am and always will be eternally grateful to those three very talented and special musicians. After the show, Tom Morello and I spoke for a few minutes about this very thing. I think he said something like, "I have always enjoyed the Jane's rock no matter the line up but you can't deny the chemistry of four guys who are supposed to be playing together." I couldn't agree more. Perry was just as riveting and mesmerizing as he has ever been. That guy is such an undeniable entertainer! After all of these years, I still catch myself looking over to my left... Captivated by his onstage energy. What an amazing honor to still be playing with my favorite all time singer and frontman. Perkins was literally on fire all night. When he is in his zone, it's like Shiva is back there with a drumstick in each hand. Watching him play drums is like watching him defy human restraints and logic. Unbelievable. Here is the set we played: Up The Beach, Trip Away, Whores, 1%, Ain't No Right, Pigs In Zen, Ted... Just Admit It, Oceansize, Had A Dad, Been Caught Stealing. The quick non-stop pace left all of us and just about everybody drenched by the end of the hour. Todd was there with a couple of our friends capturing the night on 3 cameras so there will be tons of footage to sift through and put together for a guerilla style video clip of the evening. Thanks to everyone who made this night possible... Our audience, friends, family, crew, La Cita and whatever order the stars and planets happened to be in last night. Everything came together, hopefully not for the last time. Thanx to Sue, here is a clip of Oceansize:

Got in...though half way through...the firemarshall cutting the capacity in half made it kind of suck for a lot of people.
Still...loved every second of it.
Took some photos...Dave here's a trippy one with you and Perry:

HAHA! I was Peter Lebow really! Fooled you! I had a great time thanks! No not really. Dave you have blocked my myspace again, which i really do not understand as i was not trying to send you messages or comments or anything and in fact have not for months after you deleted me after my comment about you being much better looking when you were younger. I just wanted to comment on the incredible redness of todd's new child. Hopefully she was blushing because you are soooo good looking! Don't worry it will wear off. The redness that is. I asked a friend about this and she just said, well um clearly he doesn't like you much. Oh well, I'll get over it.

Still up tweekin out on my pictures and videos from the show. It was absolutely incredible to see you guys. Made my entire year bar none. INSANE set list! You guys didn't fuck around!! Took the best shots I could for the fam...unfortunately it was a total cluster fuck in there, so all of them are from the side angles. But there are a few decent ones.
www.flickr.com/ambersonian
I will post when I get the videos up to youtube! I took a lot but again...it was "over the heads in front of me" type vids. I guess because of where I was standing the bass and drums are much, much louder than your guitar Dave and Perry's mic.
Oh well...Todd was filming away the entire show so Im sure we'll get some good shit soon enough! Videos will be up tomorrow everyone...probably late as its 4:15am and Im still wide awake. hahaha
Thanks again, Dave!!

Great review from last night...and a note from Eric: "we never know what the future has in store for us; especially with this band. but, at least right now janes addiction has a future that one would have to call somewhat promising.
we are a great band."

i must say last night was dissapointing. i was on the dance right rsvp list, i got there hours before the show and was about 30th in line, no one got in. the bands and artists list were so big that no one who waited outside got in. why not just do a private show at one of your mansions for the "in" crowd? why put it out there, send email rsvp's and get people all excited? the mood outside was less than spectacular. some people had got on the list, arrived at 8am and were still barred entry... total bs. great idea dave, poor execution, piss poor.

Absolutely absolutely LOVE the set list and I can literally feel the excitement in your blog. Last night had to absolutely amazing not just for those lucky people who were able to squeeze in but for the 4 of you as well. I admired Eric's integrity for the last 17 years for whatever personal reasons he had for not "reuniting" and I admire him now for finding it in his heart and in his head to get back on stage with you, Stephen and Perry.
OG Janes is pure magic.

Great comments Dave and great pictures from those there - except Amber, yours are still password protected!!
The gig looks ffing fantastic. I've stopped going to 'famous' band gigs because they are always in stadiums or big halls - there is just no atmosphere when you are 5 miles away and can see some dots on a stage and a TV screen. Saw the Chilis like that last year and although it was good (when do they suck?) I missed the adrenaline kick up close music used to give me when I was at Uni dancing in front of the stage to any band that played. Another thing about a sweaty gig is no matter how glam/trendy you are at the beginning, everyone looks a bit like shit at the end!!
One day when I have money to burn, I'll fly to LA for a gig. Ha! I can always dream!!
Have a good weekend everyone...................SB

Hi all. How awesome is this? If you didn't have enough cool, exciting things happening lately, THIS occurs.
It looks and sounds like last night was unbelievable! (Thx to all who documented this momentous evening.) It's so exciting to see all 4 of you together again, playing the songs that shaped so many lives and made musical history. It must be a wonderful feeling. Enjoy basking in the glory of the magic you made! Congrats to you, the band, and to all the LA-area people who were fortunate enough to be there.
Lastly, if you guys opt to take the show on the road, I won't complain. :-)
Cheers,
Denise

I can't deny I just got a little misty. I couldn't be more thrilled this is happening, sure for all of us, but most of all for the 4 of you. It's got to feel like your soul is "home". You've all grown so much since the good ol' days and after a few roller coaster rides there can't be anything more fullfilling than knowing the love is still there. I'm sure it's even more powerful as a result of that growth, from the journeys you've all been through.
I've seen Jane's with all the bassists you've used, and I've loved them all... but to me, they were all different awesome bands. There's only one Jane's and that's the one that includes Eric.
I wish I could have been there last night, but I'm hoping those of us on the east coast get a "next time"... you know you're going to hear about it from all of us incessantly until it happens ;)
Spreading the love,
Deena

I showed up with a buddy about 5 hours in advance, waited in the RSVP line, and didn't get in. After I'd waited three hours, a guy came out saying no one was getting in. Forty five minutes later a dude came out saying we might get in. About twenty minutes later, a bigger dude came out saying we were definitely not getting in.
My buddy and I stuck around to listen to Up the Beach and Trip away outside before taking off. Glad you guys are back together, but it was still kind of a bum trip. I wish I would've known capacity was going to be 157 but whatever. Oh well. At least we met some cool people in line and got a sweet poster. Hope you guys play again some time soon. And for more than 150 people! Haha.

Hey Dave!
yeah, that was a disappointment (waited about 4 hours and were 3rd in line when you guys started) but regardless I'm absolutely THRILLED you guys are back together making and playing the music I grew up with. Best of luck and if I can selfishly request a tour, a live DVD, and a new album (Strays was amazing).. then, uh, I humbly and selfishly request it! haha

It was well worth wait, and I'm super glad I was able to get a pic with Perry and Eric. Missed Both Dave and Stephen =(. I also got two of the limited edition poster (413 & 418/450) the one with the gal on it, one for me, one for the wife!
Got into the show half way thru your set, thankfully because of Perry's friend, whom I met earlier that night. I was starting to lose hope until he came out front, spotted me and let us in!
Last time I saw you all this up close was when you played three days at the Hollywood Palladium, and I forget the name of the place but it was an old run down movie theater in Hollywood were you only played for one night. Great times! Thanks Dave, Perry, Eric and Stephen!

how do you describe a Janes reunion show like that to a camp freddy show? is it tough to go back to camp freddy and cover songs after a expirence like that? will this show be in the boxset? is there any talk of a new album? are small venues going to be the way janes does it from now on?

Dear Dave and Eric,
I am posting this message on both of your blogs since I know you both read them and generally care about what the fans think. First of all, we are all obviously ecstatic about the mere existence and quality of the show Thursday night regardless of the outcome for those of us who waited in line but were denied entry. Jane’s Addiction fans are used to jumping through multiple hoops to see you guys play live whether as some form of Jane’s Addiction or in your multiple other musical endeavors. However, Thursday night was especially painful for most of us, and I think if you understand the reasons, you may be amenable to truly making it up to us:
The RSVP line comprised almost exclusively long-time fans. Fans who are now in their late 20’s to early 30’s. Fans with wives, children, and jobs. Fans who would only subject themselves to the abuse of standing in line for 7 hours only to be denied admission and still stick around to hear the muffled tunes through a mostly closed door for one band: Jane’s Addiction. These are fans who are now adults; who for one night thought that they could plug into those intense emotions we felt in our teens and young adulthood that we identify with this music. Fans who believed we would get to relive our youth for an hour or so right up until the moment we were denied. Fans who cashed in that one favor at work, that one mulligan with the wife, that one chance they have to shirk responsibility and live out a fantasy on the streets of downtown Los Angeles – and if felt right and just until the show actually started and we were outside. Dedicated fans were bribing security guards up to $60 to see the final few songs, which just isn’t right.
While the enforcement of fire regulations is not the fault of Jane’s Addiction, exclusively, some due diligence could have avoided this fiasco. While the capacity of La Cita on a normal night as I understand it is around 350, but without the use of the patio and with a stage usurping roughly 1/3 of the floor space, along with visible lines outside the venue from early on in the evening, one might assume the fire marshal would investigate and that capacity would be limited. The fault most likely lies more with the promoter and the venue, but those entities are not really accountable to the fans, and the band is. Normal fans know you guys all have tons of friends and family in Los Angeles, and any show like this is bound to be packed with your VIP crowd, but we came with false hope given the original billing of this show and the existence of the RSVP list.
So what do you do to correct this for the fans? You have a unique opportunity in that an RSVP list exists full almost exclusively of dedicated fans that scoured the message boards for information, discovered the location of the show, called the venue, researched the promoter, and sent out our email requests. These are the fans you should and can reward with a show at a small but manageable venue (capacity of roughly one thousand or more to accommodate your friends and family and the 300 or so fans that were in line). In 1995 Pearl Jam played a much-anticipated summer show in San Francisco that was truncated after 30 minutes due to Eddie Vedder puking is guts out. Pearl Jam offered fans the choice of a refund or tickets to a make-up show in the fall, during which they played for 3 hours, and my respect and adoration of them has never wavered because of their integrity. If Jane’s Addiction could be bold enough to repay your fans for their diligence and loyalty in a similar manner, I think much of the dissatisfaction expressed on the various message boards would evaporate. Honestly, I would have been satisfied to wait in line to see only 30 minutes of the show, which says a lot about the quality of live music you produce.
