(Me & J Mello at Versus soundcheck)

1. How's your weekend going?

The weekend was great! Saturday night I was in Downtown LA again to play a show at the opening of Versus Night Club with my friends, DJ Skribble, DJ Slynkee and J Mello. In fact, J Mello and I are doing a couple of acoustic shows with our first date on Saturday November 1st at a place called VIVID in San Jose. I suppose it's considered part of the Halloween Weekend even though it's the first day of November. Sunday I took off and caught up on all the election coverage. Last night at the Key Club... I joined The Darling Stilettos (managed by Matt Sorum) for a quick AC/DC song before the Steel Panther show.

2. At several points during the show you gave Eric wide eyed looks and at one point mouthed "WOW!" What was running through your mind during that set?

So much! Even though we hadn't performed together in a live setting for many many years, it is amazing how the ability to communicate across the stage with a simple look or word comes back as though no time has passed. The "wow" you are asking about probably conveyed a few things: 1. This is amazing to be playing together with the full line up again. 2. It's fuckin loud in here. Can you hear yourself OK? 3. This little room really feels like the old days in a profoundly great way. 4. Don't you love how close the audience is? 5. Watch your head! Low ceiling! 6. $150,000 on clothes? Is she kidding with that?

3. When's the last time you've listened to a Jane's album completely through?

Hmmm. That's hard to say. I am more of an iTunes/iPod shuffle guy so I don't think I have listened to anything all the way through for quite some time. Generally I will skip when something I have worked on comes on but only because I always have memories and emotional connections to the songs. When I am in the music listening mood, I like the memories and emotions of other artists to add to my day.

4. When I listen to any version of Mountain Song that was recorded after 86-91 era, you seem to somehow copy the bass lines with your guitar as opposed to NS or Kettle Whistle versions where the guitar riff is a lot more stretched out.
Do you find it better sounding that way ?

Interesting, I never noticed! Hold on lemme listen and see what you are talking about... OK. I a/b'ed the demo version and the NS version and the NS version is certainly more produced and aggressive... Actually, when I play the song live now, I am doubling the bass line even more than on the demo version with the strumming during the riff. I guess I love both versions but the demo version will always be my personal favorite.

5. Wondered if you directed your second adult movie? What happened with that?

No, I put that on the back burner for now. Todd and I have embarked on an entirely different film project that will require a lot of time and patience so I more than likely won't get to that till next year sometime, if at all.

J.A.

OK Before I get into this, let me just say how sorry we are to everyone who came all the way down to the show and waited in line, only to be turned away at the last minute. Evidently, the fire marshal came down and limited our audience... According to this music blog. Many of our own friends and family members were unable to attend as a result and it looks as though we are simply going to have to make it up to everybody somehow! Having said that... The night was just fantastic. La Cita is an extremely small venue with amazingly low ceilings. I have to say that it really felt like it was the "OLD SCHOOL" 1987 Jane's. A tiny little Mexican bar adorned with Christmas lights, hot sweaty and humid, loud and songs we haven't played in forever on the set including Trip Away and 1% off our very first XXX record. We had an amazing time. Eric Avery brought the bottom punk rock glue that we have been missing for years. Don't get me wrong... Our times with Flea, Martyn and Chaney will never be overlooked and we love all of them deeply... In some ways they are heavily responsible for helping us get to the place where we are now... But the fact remains that this machine cannot really run as well with after market parts. Jane's Addiction has to be fully stock in order to do what it does best. That is something that many have been saying for years but I am and always will be eternally grateful to those three very talented and special musicians. After the show, Tom Morello and I spoke for a few minutes about this very thing. I think he said something like, "I have always enjoyed the Jane's rock no matter the line up but you can't deny the chemistry of four guys who are supposed to be playing together." I couldn't agree more. Perry was just as riveting and mesmerizing as he has ever been. That guy is such an undeniable entertainer! After all of these years, I still catch myself looking over to my left... Captivated by his onstage energy. What an amazing honor to still be playing with my favorite all time singer and frontman. Perkins was literally on fire all night. When he is in his zone, it's like Shiva is back there with a drumstick in each hand. Watching him play drums is like watching him defy human restraints and logic. Unbelievable. Here is the set we played: Up The Beach, Trip Away, Whores, 1%, Ain't No Right, Pigs In Zen, Ted... Just Admit It, Oceansize, Had A Dad, Been Caught Stealing. The quick non-stop pace left all of us and just about everybody drenched by the end of the hour. Todd was there with a couple of our friends capturing the night on 3 cameras so there will be tons of footage to sift through and put together for a guerilla style video clip of the evening. Thanks to everyone who made this night possible... Our audience, friends, family, crew, La Cita and whatever order the stars and planets happened to be in last night. Everything came together, hopefully not for the last time. Thanx to Sue, here is a clip of Oceansize:

Jane's Addiction

There has been some speculation online about a secret Jane's Addiction show this week. Well, there is no need to speculate... Jane's Addiction will be performing this Thursday night, October 23rd, at La Cita Bar (336 South Hill Street) in downtown Los Angeles. The night is hosted by our friend, artist Shepard Fairey. This will be the first Jane's Addiction show in years with the original line up. I have 2 pairs of tickets available for the evening. The first two people in LA to post their full names (on 6767.com) will be added to my guest list with a +1 each.

Looks like Peter Lebow +1 and Amber Horner +1! I know Amber is here in LA... Peter, can you really make this show? Please reply below!

Better Late Than Never

1. Dave, have you had a chance to watch your friend Brooke Burke on Dancing With The Stars?

No I haven't... I have never seen an episode of that show. Actually, I have been glued to MSNBC whenever I get a chance to turn the TV on. Once in a while I'll jump over to FOX News just to raise my blood pressure a little bit. By the way... Obama simply killed it last night.

2. Sometimes do you need to take a break from 6767/mySpace, etc. because it becomes a chore rather than a pleasure to keep up?

Nah... It's never a chore, but things have been really busy for me lately and I have been trying to bring some balance into my life. Between SpreadTV, Camp Freddy, DJ Skribble and various other projects and travel I have been trying to take advantage of my private time.

3. What made you so interested in politics this year? I know you were for Hillary at the start but seem to moved towards Obama.

Haha! Well, yeah... I have moved towards the only choice we have! At the start of this whole thing I was a Hilary supporter primarily due to the fact that she has a lot of experience and I know who she is... Not to mention the fact that I am a huge fan of her husband. Now that Obama has made himself known over the past few months, I am certain we have the right nominee. As for why the sudden change in my public political views... I'd say that a lot of it has to do with the fact that I am genuinely excited about our nominee and after the mess of our last election, it is impossible to keep quiet about the need for change.

4. The only question I ever have for you Dave is when you are filming SpreadTV so I can come down and watch the taping!

The problem we have with the live audience right now is that we never really know what day we shoot as it changes from week to week depending on everybody's schedule. Sometimes we do a couple in a day and sometimes we only do one. I know that Todd and I are trying to get back to the full hour format which would be better suited for a live audience. I will let you know as I get more information.

5. (RE: Z Rock) How much of your dialog was improvised?

For the most part all of it. I don't think I ever read a "script" of any kind. I knew what the episode was about and we discussed the beats for each scene before shooting them. Once in a while we would know a line or two we wanted to throw in to move the story along. To be honest, I don't do well with written dialogue and everything I have recently done where I am "playing a part" has been very loose and spontaneous.

Z-Rock Interview

Here is an interview I did about the Z-Rock episode I appeared in, which aired recently on IFC. We talked a lot about the show and then went in several different directions. One of my better experiences doing interviews.
