Merry Christ-Mass Text

Holiday mass texts? Are you kidding me? This is becoming an epidemic. I have about two or three close friends and my family. That's about it and I like it that way. I talk to them often and rarely have a need to text them with the exception of once in a while. However, because of the nature of my work and the fact that I have been alive for 40 years, I have about 1000 numbers in my phone. As a result, holidays have become a cellular nightmare. Every two or three minutes another mass holiday text comes in with some little cute play on words or sexual innuendo in the spirit of whatever holiday it is. So annoying! No, it doesn't make me feel special or that they were thinking of me or how sweet it is that they are in the spirit... They may as well just write, "Hey everyone! Don't forget about me!!! Notice me! Attention! I want attention!!!!" I woke up this morning with about 40 holiday texts from people I haven't heard from in years with the exception of Thanksgiving and Halloween! Plus, I am the kind of guy who thinks that every time the phone rings, it COULD be that one call that's going to change everything. The million dollar idea, the girl that got away finally came to her senses, the creative dream that's about to come true... You get the idea. It's kind of like a continual buzzing and beeping let down all day long. Even worse... When one comes in from someone you would actually love to hear from and you're like, "Hey! So and so sent me a text!" Then you realize they just sent it to everyone. :( It may as well just say, "HI! I wasn't thinking of you... I'm just making sure that I come off as really giving and loving this time of year. Basically, I am just making it all about me! Yay for me!" BZZZZZZZZZZ "If Santa had mistletoe on Thanksgiving instead of a cat we'd be blah, blah, blah..." Now, I never mind the personal holiday texts. "Dave, blah, blah, blah" That's fine. I think it's the "send all" feature that gets to me. What's the thinking anyway? "Oh, we aren't doing cards this year, we are mass texting!" I was even going to send one out to make a point that read, "Hey everyone. Don't feel so special. I am not necessarily thinking of you, this is just a mass text." You know, my own little bitter play on the whole thing... But then I realized, "Replies! I'd be inundated with replies. Can't have that!" As I was writing this little rant I received a personal text. I was so moved that I wrote back, "Wow! Was that just sent to me? God bless you for not mass texting me." A tear almost came to my eye. Anyway, to anyone reading this today, I wish you a very happy holiday. After all, you came here!

I agree with you, why not think of someone throughout the year, rather than, this ONE time.
I hope you have fun today.... whatever you do.

You know, even though you do receive mass texts, remember it is the ones who take time to write here daily,or on myspace or the panic asylum that are the cool ones;)

I don't have text -thank goodness!

And YES, Mr N, we come here day after day:) Merry Christmas!!

I knew if I came by here I'd find some amusing essay from you, Dave. I don't have 1000 numbers in my phone, but out of about 110 I've already recieved 14 texts...so I can empathize. I think I may just steal your text message idea and send it out to the ones who have sent me one. hahaha They'd be shocked...sarcasm isn't my something they'd expect from me :)

Merry Christmas Dave and 67 family!
I love you all!
xoxo Amber

Dave honey, send me your number, I wouldn't dream of mass texting you :)
Totally agree with you. I'm sick of the mass text epidemic, the mass comment epdidemic, the emails, the lot. You're so right.
Hope you're ok - have a happy day, ignore all those attention-seeking-fucko's and concentrate on those that you love who love you and make you feel as unique as you are.
Happy you posted. Sorry you're feeling ranty.
Hugs and love.

Hey Mr. Man…Geeze….about 1000 people on your phone I couldn’t even imagine… Although I’m the same way about answering the phones, you just never know it COULD be that call whether we won a million dollars, lol… or an emergency occurred with family or friends and they need help. What we don’t answer is those 800 numbers….the money will be there soon, Thank God for caller ID…lol
Have a wonderful week, take care and God Bless. Con Muncho Amor. Yoli

SB-Thanks "annus horriblus" huh, lmao…I can think of 100 ways to use these words in a sentence with my friends and family…lol Going to use it today actually!...Have friends over now…Going to take the Playstation 3 away from the kiddos for a while and record a few friends play “Rock Band”. (my poor babies)

Love you all!

amen bro, mass texts are lame. Although I rarely get them, sometimes I'm happy when I get any text or call at all!
I miss the traditional cards that are sent through the mail. I usually send them every year to the handful whose address I have. Although that can be kind of funny too when in your posse someone sends the same card to everyone.. then you see each other and are like "Hey i got that same card from him/her!"
I need to start making individualized hand-made ones again.

Anywho, a very Merry Christmas to you, D-dogg. You totally rock and seem to get wiser and wiser every year. :o)

Dear Mr. Dave Navarro,
I stumbled upon this page in search for what I'd hope to be the real Dave Navarro on the receiving end of this post. I think I've come to the right place. I found 6767.com through myspace music, Dave Navarro Spread.
I was hoping to get in touch with you because, I'd like to get in touch with a girl I used to know. It's my understanding she did some work for you on the Three Days Tour and you knew her pretty well..... Perhaps you could help me get in touch with her.
Merry Christmas~to you and those closest to you. Have a safe and blessed holiday. "Kudos" on the mass text tangent!
My grandfather told me I'd be lucky if at the end of my life I could count my closest friends on my two hands. I think Im lucky to count my closest friends on one of my hands. Unfortunately due to the on going cycle of life I don't get to visit my friends as much as I'd like. Thank you in advance for your time. ~niki

And 6767 family as well! Hope everyone's holiday was wonderful. My kiddo and I went to a movie and then had a nice evening at home. For a change. No hustle and bustle of this that and the other to do.

Happy New Year in case I don't get a chance to jump back on.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday season spending time with your family and friends. Gotta love it when you can, right?
Thanks for everything you do and look forward to the new year.

Awww Dave, If I actually knew you, I would have definitely sent a card!! Personally, don't know where people find the time to text on Christmas day!!
Hope you and all the 6767 family had a awesome day with family and friends!!

Love to all

Oh, and BTW, my one of my sister's gave me the book "Whores". Not even close to the literary brilliance of "DTTAH" of course, but from what I've read so far, not too bad...

that's a classic rant, definitely made me chuckle on back to work day.

Posted by: johnM19 [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 26, 2007 06:53 AM

Well Dave, I hope you had a wonderful holiday. Mine was pretty cool, though my birthday is the day before Christmas, which so completely lame!

Anyways, I decided to write this because I've writen about 12 tracks that are very Cure/Daniel Ash/Joy Division'esk and I really feel that your vocals (from listening to "Trust No One") would be great on these. I'm sure you get alot of people coming to you, asking you to work on something musically with them. But, if you have any interest in at least taking a listen, give me a shout! :) charlesw@westmarine.com

Posted by: 3division03 [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 26, 2007 07:25 AM

LOL... I feel the exact same way about mass texts and the phone in general, and I don't even get that many texts/calls. Thx for the rant... It needed to be said!

I hope you and everyone else are having a wonderful holiday. My Christmas was surprisingly great, except that my home computer caught some kind of virus/trojan horse just as I was about to dole out myspace greetings. Ah, malware... the gift that keeps on giving!

Makes me almost glad that I'm at work and at least semi-connected.

Love and best wishes to all,

Hey Dave,

Happy holidays to you, a little late! Yeah, I hate getting text messages from people I don't know and calls from people I dont know. That sucks!
LOL,
Marion

I didn't check in yesterday because I thought everyone else would be doing family stuff!! I missed a Christmas rant..... Mass texting is not something I've encountered so far, but mass anything is insensitive in the fact that ( bastard ...I've just deleted a shit load of typing) it is a catch all without having to think of individuals or engage the brain.

I'm guilty of the typed Christmas letter, but I personalise each one with a note at the top - and besides, I like receiving chunky Christmas letters!

It's a shame Dave you started the day on a rant - doesn't really set you up for a good day of relaxation or whatever. Hope it got better.

My husband and I spent a day at a friend's house eating turkey and putting on weight. My experience of Christmas as a kid was of the adults making such an effort to have a perfect day, drinking too much sherry, fighting, burning the dinner and then sitting at the dinner table giving death looks at each other. This is one of the reasons that I totally refuse to do the family Christmas get together thing - too many bad memories. There was some family, in-law friction going on yesterday but there was no sherry involved and we could make a joke out of it and quash any bitchiness before it started - a more adult way of dealing I think.

There is a flip side to the 1000 numbers thing - people who have no-one to celebrate anything with may be grateful for a mass text because at least they are on someones list - they exist somewhere.

Yoli - my Latin spelling might be out - it could be 'horriblis' rather than 'horriblus' - wouldn't want you to be grammatically incorrect....! The day after I wrote that post, the morning news announced that the Queen had opened a YouTube account and her Christmas message could viewed online - it's called 'The Royal Channel'....rumour has it that they wanted 'The Panic Channel' but I believe that's already taken....

I think I better stop.....take care everyone.....SB

Oh yes, I went to catch up on some of the older SEs I've missed, but they are gone from Mania! SE12 is the oldest one up I think, are the older ones anywhere or have I just missed out? :( ......I've succumbed to the power of the emoticons..........

Well I missed you yesterday, but you made my day today. Thanks for the laughs, and the honesty. I guess it's better to be forgotten, than superficially acknowledged, at least that's how I see it. Love ya kid, hope your day improved as it went along. xoxo

lindapolv, chlt nc. mass text is a pain in the ass, my phone goes 24-7, none stop, 90% is all business. over christmass, new years, easter, never stops. in auditing, people send me files or documents in email then copy it to a text or a dopey IM, oh the joy of efficiecy, yeah right. i could just smash my phone.

but the excitement of the "next cool job or next set of books to manage" phone call is such a rush i dont get too crazy about dumbass text.

i tell people, dont worry about being in touch or touching base (to say Hi or reconnect). i say we are all connected and that is good enough.

so Dave and Todd, merry christmas, happy new year, thank you for working so hard. i truly enjoy SE and the tues/thurs shows.

for 7 years i enjoyed my own holdays family-free, peaceful, prayerful, quiet. now 2007 has been holdiday with family. it sucked, i smiled and hugged my way thru it, saying only positive things. but i went home and cried b/c they were mean or bitchy to me. later, mom-dad encouraged me, defended me, lifted my heart up and i stopped the booing wooing and felt thankful for the lessons i learned during this family shin dig.
love, cheers, peace everyone especially SB :)

Oh dear, perhaps you should have sent some really twisted text message as revenge. Like "I just decaptitated Santa Claus ho ho ho!!!" or something. Then they might delete your number.

Well I had a great Christmas!! Hope everyone else did.

Thanks Linda P, sounds like your Christmases are/were rougher than, mine - I just had family being poisonous to each other around me, not at me. You are probably a better person for coping with it rather than myself who avoids it........although I wish I had avoided this week's Christmas celebration...my friend's kids were coughing their germs everywhere and now I'm sick....little bastards.

So much for the Christmas spirit.........................SB

......and the freezer has just died, defrosted everything inside it and leaked water all over the floor.........

Dave, I just experienced a "Coffee Bean" moment that you always kid about on CFR.
I'm at the counter at "Seattle's Best" inside a Borders Bookstore. The ONLY person at the counter and the moe behind the counter asks for my name.
WHA? Is a pack of coffee stealing marauders going to jump out of the magazine racks and steal my caramel latte BECAUSE I didn't give my name?
I almost said "Dave" just so he could yell "Dave...Dave..." as I was still the only person standing at the "order pick up" window.

so it's not just you and Coffee Bean franchise. It seems to be every coffee place all over the country.

Hi every one, hi Dave!

First time for me here :-) i mean, first time I write, because I come and read your posts every day, for 6 months now.

And not the same for me, because only two very good friends of mine texted me. And one guy I don't like that much sent me a "Merry Christmas!" and yes, it was clearly the mass text virus.

Whatever, I wanted to ask you Dave, if sometimes it was possible for fans to meet you. Because I'm actually planning to go to the USA (I'm Belgian :-p ) and, being a BIG fan of Jane's Addiction but definitely a fan of your guitar play, of your touch, of you and the way you make me feel when I listen to your music (Jane's, TPC, you own projects, Soul Mover, and sooooooo more), well I'd like...just to say "Hi" to you, to see you and I would be so happy.

I think you're now living on Hollywood Bld, but I still think it's not possible for anyone to see you. It's the rule. I know. But I know you're sometimes closer to people, than the common Hollywood people are. I could see you in the Spread interviews, and I thought "wow this is not common, Trent Reznor would not do that, or not that way" for example.

So would it be possible to see you, but 3 minutes?

If I go to the USA, it's part for that. To see you.

I hope you'll see this post and SORRY for my english, I know it's a pitty for you (for you all) :-D

Merry Christmas and best wishes !!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for what you did and do for music, definitely...You got the groove man :-)

Love

PS : the Photo Booth was a fuckin' great idea, what a pleasure was it to read the book :-)

Posted by: fastlevrai [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 28, 2007 01:24 PM

Just reading through the comments and now I feel a tad insensitive saying I had a great Christmas.
Believe me there have been some bad ones in the past, what with family problems and tensions, but what has made it happier for everone is that we just don't take all the hype or pressure to be a perfect family at christmas on board anymore or actually go to the great amount of effort we used to. So it is better.

And you have a fan from Belgium? Thats cool...Belgian chocolates are the BEST!! I used to live in Antwerp near a chocolate shop, I used to get through a lot, those ones with the fresh cream in...divine. Although a lot of people in Belgium did seem to have strange moustaches.

Well....if that fan goes to see your show I hope he takes you some Belgian chocolates.
