New Manson
I never do record reviews but I figured, at least you know what I like and what my influences are. Based on that, you can decide if you want to even consider my opinion... I always thought that readers should know where a reviewer is coming from before giving any review validity. I was just checking out the new Manson: Eat Me, Drink Me and at first, I was trippin... I was like... Huh? Being such a huge Antichrist fan, I guess I wanted more of that, but then again we have that record already, thank God. After getting into it deeper, I decided I love it. The album is a lot more stripped back production wise than the last few and way more "song" oriented. I would even venture to say that there are some serious New Wave elements to the new collection of songs, especially in the guitar department. Lyrically the songs are dark as to be expected but they are sometimes within musical structures that are by far the least ominous of all the previous Manson sonics. Vocally, he is on point... It's always good to hear that guy sing no matter what it's over, provided you are already a fan as I am. Melody wise, it's pretty much business as usual, but Manson's strong suit hasn't always been melody, it's been attitude, lyrical content and delivery... I think he still delivers here. Eat Me, Drink Me is a major musical departure from the usual Manson trip, in terms of the band and production, but it is a definite must have for the die hard fan. The album seems to maintain a moderate tempo throughout which can at times, grow tiresome to some, but at the same time, it makes for good in your face driving music or good background music. The same statement can be made about my last work with The Panic Channel, so in no way is that a dig. I will be purchasing this album for sure. You can check it out on the MM MySpace page which is linked above. Why am I even bothering with a review? Because information about music should come from musicians. The funny thing is, that I was inspired to do this review after talking to my long time friend and Rolling Stone contributor, Steve Baltin. We were discussing the whole critic/reviewer issue and it became clear to me through the conversation that the only way to change up the current dynamic is to go ahead and do something about it. Hopefully we can get more artists to get the information out there. Put it this way, if you don't like where I come from as an artist, you can at least consider that before reading what my thoughts are on a particular artist or band.

I love being at the edge surfing right at the crest of things. I loved reading your thoughts and it was great to read how your love of the album grew as you listened to it. Sometimes I don't even like a song till years after lol. Marilyn Manson has always been a shocker and I respect him for that. I first became a fan after hearing an interview with him. He is brilliant! and I would hang out with him anytime.
Love ya, and "thanks for sharing"

There is nothing better than seeing an artist evolve, there is nothing worse than seeing an artist stuck in a rut and doing the same old thing over and over - even though some die hard fans for some reason expect this?
After reading your review Dave I can't wait to hear the new Manson album.
Sending much love xxx

Thanks for the delicious review, chunky and informative - a great selection of tasty slices. I had listened to some of it on MM's myspace and hadn't got any further.
I wanna thank your friend Steve for getting you writing and us salivating!
There is NOTHING better than a review in any genre from someone who knows what they are talking about.
More please DN - (whenever you want to share your ear's thoughts - be waitin to hear).

I find this album sound like Manson. Yes, it's not Antichrist but i always prefered Manson with this slow song. I don't know why ...

Hi Dave,
i like the thought of musicians reviewing other's music, it means everything, much more valuable than some guy in an office at a keyboard. I've seen Manson's ads on myspace and have heard a little. sounds interesting. i usually read his interviews and stuff because several years ago the press was blaming him for violence in schools and he handled things, addressing it, very well. Don't blame music for that, please!
Dave, you're a good friend (to your friends). that's why you will receive the love and loyalty back. you don't get jealous of other's success and you don't dwell on the past. and you don't trash former bandmates in the press for publicity.
i hope you do more reviews, when you feel like it. and you said once on SRL that you try not to play your own music. i think its ok to do so but your call of course.
you home? enjoy yourself! love you.

I was just going to say the same thing about artists evolving. It's so interesting to watch someone's music develop and evolve over the years. (That is, IF they are even given the chance to do so... which is another topic.)
In fact, some of all-time favorite groups were not my favorites right away, but instead grew on me over the years as they evolved and I evolved. Then, suddenly... voila! I "got" what they were doing.
MM is one of a kind, and I've always respected (and often agree with) his opinions. I'm intrigued by this commentary, especially the stuff about the New Wave elements, and I'll be sure to check out the new stuff next time I'm MySpacing.
Thanks for everything. All the best!

Well...
MM was the first guest on the Henry Rollins show this season and he said the lyrics on this CD are more personal given the events he's been through in the last few years.
Have you seen the video for Heart Shape Glasses?? Cause it's HOT yo. But a little disturbing because the thought of having sex with MM makes me throw up in my mouth a little.

I agree with your pro-active, taking it back stance with the music industry! Great review -- MUCH more interesting to read one from someone who actually knows the art they're discussing. I will say, I'm really disappointed about the Rockstar news -- we all loved seeing you and it was such a kick that everyone from elementary school kids to 80 year old grandmothers knew your name and talked about what a sweetheart guy you are. Ah well...I have to look on the bright side...more time to dedicate to Spread, right?

OK Navarro, fess up, how much in royalties is Manson paying you for this review? HAHA
Antichrist? Hmm... I guess that means you're not a Christian, who knew? Don't mind me I'm just in the mood to fuck with you, peace bro!

It makes no sense to me that a journalist would review a record from a genre he wasn't into but it happens all the time, evidently. You, and other blogging musicians, should do this more often as we're far more likely to respect the opinions of the peers.
On a slightly different subject, are you aware the BBC is currently running a series called "The Seven Ages Of Rock"? Probably not. The title is self-explanatory and thus far the programmes have been pretty informative (and it's always good to see old footage of Hendrix and The Who) BUT the Alternative Rock episode is soon to be aired...without any mention of Jane's Addiction!! The programme synopsis and featured tracks makes no mention of Jane's (or the Chilis for that matter) so the forum's gone a bit mad. It's only an hour long but if they're omitting Jane's Addiction from alternative rock history then they may as well not bother mentioning Led Zeppelin throughout the entire series.
Madness, I tell you!

P.S. Could you please unblock my MySpace profile?! I've never written/am never going to write anything horrid (against you anyway) and feel incredibly miffed to have been excluded!

I appreciate the review. MM really isn't one of my favs - but I will take a listen after reading your thoughts. I can always use more driving music. In other release news.. the new Storm Large CD is out now too.. in case you might want to review something else.

Awesome Dave! I hope you do more peer reviews like this...it certainly carrys a lot more weight (in my opinion) coming from an artist I have tons of respect for....as opposed to some bullshit critic I've never heard of. Keep it comin baby...

Hi Dave!
Saw posters for this new CD all over a building in New York. Really hadn't heard anything about it, but because of your review, I will have to check it out.
Getting a review like this is different from you. Are you looking at writing reviews for publication? Just asking....
Have a great day!
Always,
me

BJORK - Volta
i was looking forward to this album lots....i only got into bjork threw an ex of mine when i was laying on her bed listning to hyperballad and wondering where the fuck my life was about to go....then medulla came out and that was what it was...i liked it and all....and then she bought out that 'drawing restraint' soundtrack which just didnt do anything for me....i mean all that ambiance is good and shit but id just rarther listen to ****** for that instead (this isnt for name dropping).....anyway volta!....i reallllllllly liked the first and second track, nice bouncy bjork songs and she can still slit your throat with her voice....what fuckin pisses me off tho is the TERRIBLE track she done with timbaland...its just so distastful, like drawing a moustache on the mona lisa or something....theres some really wonderful sounds and artsyness to volta but this just stinks like a turd....its gonna proberbly be the single to as its "a timbaland production" whatever man....that song sucks....he should have saved it for missy elliot or something...my favourate tho so far is the track with that anthony and the johnsons guy...back when he first came out and everyone was buzzing about him i didnt quite get it, i think theres a part of me that just automatically hates anything new but id like to think im honest and open minded enough to give something a chance if its stuck around for a while and makes me feel good (yeah yeah yeahs, kings of leon and others i have all 'said sorry' to in my head)....and with this song that anthony guys won me over and im gonna listen to his cd again. over all yeah get the bjork album if your into that kind of shit.....apologies for lack of song titles, i havnt looked at the box much, you get a nice sticker with it tho.

Hi Dave-
Reading your review-BIG WORDS:)
Thanx for the review. Intially, I didn't like Manson. As I listened to his music and watched his videos, I realized that he was just trying to be visual. Just like KISS,Crue, Poison, and others. At least giving theatrical content to the music. I will have to check it out!!
Are you "spent" after your big Vegas birthday?
Thanx for all U are -luv ya, Db
