Sunday 10
Here is the Camp Freddy Radio Podcast!
1. I've heard and seen ads that announce the band as 'Dave Navarro and The Panic Channel,' or something to that effect. Does that ever bother you?
The only time I have seen that was for the XFANS show and that was a situation where they asked me to be involved and I invited the band to do it with me. Of course I would rather it just be The Panic Channel but then again, we are always grateful to get the opportunity to play no matter how it comes about.
2. When Jane's recorded "Don't Call Me Nigger", how'd you pull it off without Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson getting all up in your hizzy?
Well, that was a Sly & the Family Stone cover song and our version featured Ice-T singing the words, "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey!" It was a statement about racism and was intended to make people think. A commentary on racism, which in itself is not racist.
3. Are you ever concerned that you may be receiving too much notoriety for your connection to the porn industry?
Lemme see... Awww hell no! I have a lot of good friends who are amazing people that work in the adult industry, but I wouldn't consider myself "connected" to it. (Not unless you count that one film I did in the 80's, but that was an independent limited release.) I'm more concerned about being connected to people in the recording industry. Now THAT'S scandalous!
4. Would you ever consider taking SRL one step further and create your own label? If you weren't with Capitol would you put yourself on it?
Yes and yes. In January we start the Digital Factory project. I'm just waiting for the new space to become available.
5. Dave, what is going on with the Asylum? Do you know?
I have no idea I just woke up. Let me look into it.
6. Do you know what's going on with the contest from thepanicchannel.tv? Is Capitol going to screw us again?
When I asked this question to my Magic 8-Ball it said, "Concentrate and ask again." So, I regrouped my thoughts and asked again. This time it came up with, "Ask again later." I waited a little while, gave it a good re-shaking and asked, "Is Capitol going to screw us again?" The 8-Ball was a little more specific this time when it said, "Signs point to yes." Of course I wasn't satisfied so I asked again one last time... Very slowly and very clearly. Imagine my surprise when this time, the little icosahedron inside the 8-Ball actually came up with, "Of course Capitol are gonna screw you, Jackass! You guys don't even exist over there!" I was amazed that the Magic 8-Ball even had that answer as an option! Who knew?
Audio Answer: Click Here
7. We've all heard your various rants about Starbucks or Coffee Bean on CFR...I wanna know what you drink from there...just plain old brewed coffee or do you get creative?
That's kind of the funny thing I guess. I just order a large black coffee, nothing creative. One would think that if my order is so simple there would be nothing to rant about. After years of placing this order for black coffee, I have finally learned that I have to say, "No room for cream" in order to prevent them from asking me if I want room for cream in my "black" coffee. I won't even get into the little sippy hole "spill proof" lids that pretty much ALWAYS spill out into the car's cup holder or onto my skin as I walk out.
8. Dave, in your book you labeled one of the major reasons for not killing yourself was being creative. (Reference to a film I made back then.) What would you recommend to us who aren't financially successful in our creative endeavors? What's the point of creating if no one cares? What's the reason for self expression if there's no one to express it too?
The point is to create. The point is to express yourself, even if it's only to yourself, and learn from it and explore those inner places and parts that are uncharted emotional territories... To have the courage to look inward and see what's below the surface, to the heart of who we really are. Nobody ever saw the film I was working on that made me want to keep going, but the fact that I was in the process of self-discovery was enough for me. Creativity can help us make peace with ourselves as well as fuel our demons, which I suppose is one of the many things that makes the process so exciting and important.
9. It seems like all the Celebes have this tight knit group, but is it real? Do you have a lot of friends that are just normal people too?
Of course I do. I suppose that it just seems like public people only hang with each other because a headline like, "Paris Hangs Out With Some Chick" wouldn't really sell magazines.
10. You take cold calls on the radio, respond to instant messages on SRL, and answer hundreds of questions on this website -- and yet you receive complaints about harsh tone or sarcasm when dealing with someone who isn't listening. Does it ever seem that it is never enough for some people and they just keep demanding and never expect any consequences?
Sure it does, but the reality is that is just life. In any group of people there are bound to be some that are less accepting of things. We keep moving for the ones who do appreciate our efforts.

Dave,
It was interesting to listen to the discussion about recording contracts during CFR...however I'm (and I think other listeners) still unclear on something. You said you signed a contract in 1991 and it seemed to allude to it still being in effect to this day, if not perpetuity. Is that correct? I can't see how that works if you have been able to record on other labels (Deconstruction, your solo album, the Panic Channel...even the last Jane's album wasn't even with Warners).
So is the really a "recording" contract issue? Or is this really a "management" contract issue? I recall reading an article with you where you stated how Jane's signed a deal that resulted in your ex-manager continuing to earn bucks off you long after you parted ways with him.
Sorry if this is going into too personal questions...guess I'm trying to make sure that the issue of "contracts" you have put on the table is clear to all those up and coming musos who may be soon to sign deals.
Thanks,
Daniel

Gifts - my question is about gifts. If someone wanted to send something to you (no not Anthrax though one of their CD's would be ok? -seriously)where would one send such an item? I look at it this way - you would love it or hate it and if the latter you could always donate to ebay charity auction or such. So - nutshell - does Dave or TPC have a store front mailing address?
Thanks

Dave,
When did you get your first listen to the final Supernova album and what do you think of it?
Posted by: justin at November 26, 2006 03:53 PM
Hello Dave and family.
Hey Dave, I just finished reading the book "Whores". I have to say that it was a good read. There are SO many questions I want to ask but I guess one of them would be regarding Strays. Eric's sis Rebecca made a comment that she did like the album very much cause Bob took the bass out and it does not sound like Jane's. How do you feel about it now?
Another question if you do not want to answer the first one. Perry said that he shaved his dreds off cuase of the war (deseert storm. Why did you cut off your dreds as well.
And question #3...what have you done with the "Rhimores" album. Did you get rid of them?
Thanks Sweetie. Hope you had a nice weekend.
Love, CC

I have a question? Will Jane's ever get back together, make a new CD and tour N Am? (I mean my city, Calgary) Actually that was 3 questions put together. Oops
I'm reading a book about trust by Stephen Covey Jr (the dude's son). He goes on and on about getting and keeping someone's trust. But in one chapter the dude comes out and says sometimes you can never get it back cuz too many withdrawals have been made from the "trust account" and too much pain has been caused. He kinda contradicts himself. Were there trust issues among the guys in Jane's? Stupid question, I guess. That's 4 things I've asked you now. Sorry.
I ramble. Have a great Sunday, Dave.

Hello Dave,
In the moment, a lot artist create them own label and often, a couple years, the label is out because it's not profitable and the big name quit for a big label...
I know that a independent label help a lot people for enter in 'industry' and you can make 'all' you want but they are to aside the media. So, the music is less accesible.
My question is, Do you believe that the little label are more of power in futhur ?
I hope you understand me, i'm very bad in english

Evening Dave. :-) Yayyy… I always love reading the Sunday Ten. Your answers are invariably educational, inspirational, hilarious and just plain fun. Thanks for starting these up again, man. I like your response for question #3. Adult industry, fine… recording industry, yowsa! LOL Ooh. Awesome, dude… sounds like the “Digital Factory project” is going to be ‘the ill.’ :-) Magic 8-Ball... LOL Ummm… yeah. It takes the collective staff of the ‘Psychic Hotline’ to figure things like that one out. History does love to repeat itself. Never mess with the ‘all seeing ball…’ ;-P Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend and peace to the peeps. Dave, in your book you labeled one of the major reasons for not killing yourself was being creative. If you weren't a "successful" musician in the mid 90s and creative outlets were not open to you and you had to work at CVS instead would you have gone a head and killed yourself? would your lifestyle be different if jane's addiction hadn't experienced the success that it did? And what would you recomend to us who aren't financially successful in our creative endeavors. what's the point of creating if no one cares. what's the reason for self expression if there's no one to express it too.

Oh man, fuck the recording industry. It's a dying beast in it's last throes, desperately attempting to stay when it knows it can't for much longer.
Ahem, anyway, I don't sound bitter that good music is no longer given due time do I? >:)
QUESTION(s): Over the years you've expressed yourself through almost every medium: music, photography, film, words, and the internet. So is it safe to assume the "Digital Factory" will be an all encompassing outlet for yourself as well as other artists? Be they musicians, visual artists, performance artists, etc? Internet, tv, radio, all of the above?
Sorry if that's a loaded question, just curious.
Peace!

Why do you let your fans have so much contact with you? I think it's awesome but it's not part of your job is it, do you do it so you can find out what people think of you? You don't seem like the kinda guy who cares.
Also last night on CFR I saw with 1 caller the negative effects of normal people having contact with stars, once you get a little bit of interaction you want more and it becomes this desperate obsession. It's easy it's like wow I talked to Dave on the phone and he called me a dude maybe we're friends now. It's totally innocent but it's sad and delusional at the same time. So that's why I think it's better sometimes 'stars' keep their distance from their fans. It's an interesting topic and maybe subconciously it's the reason why I'm writing this myself.
What do you think?

"I won't even get into the little sippy hole "spill proof" lids that pretty much ALWAYS spill out into the car's cup holder or onto my skin as I walk out."
This is the source of endless agony for me as well, however I've figured out a hack for it. If you aren't planning to sit there and drink it down a bit you can rip off 1/3rd of a paper napkin from the creamer station and roll it up so it's just the perfect size to plug that little sippy hole long enough to get you home without the thing spilling all over you and your car on the return trip. It takes an extra moment or two but is totally worth it.

Max Danieli, in the song Scar Tissue by the Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis wrote/sang, "Scar tissue that I wish you saw; sarcastic mister know it all..." Kiedis say's that was in reference to Dave. Just reminded me with your question.
Dave, in reference to your answer in question 8, "Nobody ever saw the film I was working on that made me want to keep going..." What is/was this film about? Will it ever be put 'out there' or is it something that you will kept locked away as part of your diary?

Correction: Or is it something that will be kept locked away.

Interesting and great points made about creativity.
To people who say, whats the point of creating because no-one cares, well a lot of creativity does stem from - nothing.
I'm not sure if that makes sense, but whatever.

Dave - WHAT ABOUT BOND?????!!! Are you going to see Casino Royale and if not, who's your fave action hero...

Posted by: vixen at November 27, 2006 08:16 AM
Regarding 7.: Your asking for a "black" coffee means nothing to the barista - since customers add their own dairy products, all coffee is black to them.
I like my coffee on the light side, so I always ask for a grande in a venti cup to guarantee I have room for cream. That's my usual order, except at this time of year when I splurge on a venti Gingerbread latte once a week or so - non-fat and occasionally decaf.
Posted by: Kathy at November 27, 2006 08:56 AM
Actually - not just Bond. Did you ever think about transferring over to the movies and doing some acting?
Something else too - that response to the creativity question. It's not enough for everyone, what was enough for you. The journey to discover the self doesn't cut it for me, I live to write but there's been so many times when I've walked away from it all because I can't get the break I need. And either that means I am shit and should just leave it alone or it means I will never get the validation I need because I want to share what I do as for me that's part of it. Maybe for you that doesn't matter as much because you've already proven who you are to yourself. It's not about the journey. It isn't enough. x

"The point is to create. "

I have to add to my frivolous question above that you're right on about creating. Do it and what comes of it will come of it, but don't stop if you don't find fame or fortune. Just keep creating no matter what.

Hey Vixen.
i'm not Dave or anything so maybe it doesn't matter what i have to say but if you live to write, write. And put your stuff in as many places as possible to get yourself out there. If the craft itself doesn't cut it for you then post your work on blogs, on a personal website, involve yourself in collectives where you can exchange ideas and support each other in creative endeavors. Maybe you already do this. You can't just do it for the "break" or the hope to become big over night. The industry just doesn't work that way for most people. This is not to say that it can't but you can't just rely on the potential of fame. i think you really have to have the drive to want to create to sustain yourself. Any kind of art making is hard work and sometimes it takes a lot of rough drafts to get to a place where the break you need is just a delightful surprise because you are so emersed in your craft. And honestly that is the best time for it to happen. Don't give up just put yourself out there! and stay open.
Good luck! :)
Posted by: a77 at November 27, 2006 10:16 AM
"immersed" rather. ha ha.

Jen, cool I didn't know that, also in Kiedis' Book he describes Dave as the 'king of sarcasm'.
Posted by: Max Danieli at November 27, 2006 10:35 AM
On CFR you mentioned a couple of Pop singles that you liked. Did you buy the track or the CD? If you purchased the CD, how many times have you listened to it straight through? What does that do for album sales?
As an outside observer, I wonder if the following models apply to the recording industry.
Pharmaceuticals: Rush everything to market – hoping to find that next great miracle drug. Put together a slick advertising campaign. Pull the drug and pay the lawsuits if something goes wrong. As a result, as a consumer, I don’t really want to take anything or have anything done until it’s been around awhile.
Publishing: Production methods are cheaper than ever. The big booksellers want the next best-seller. So, since it is cheap to produce, more books get published but the number of books sold remains unchanged. Publishers throw everything into the market in the hopes of hitting a winner. Standards get lower, as more half-hearted stuff gets sent into the market. As a consumer, you wander through the aisles of books with pretty covers, but 9 times out of 10, you buy the book and find that the content is pretty average. So the consumer has to wade through a huge volume of titles and spend hours researching to find something to read – or go back to reading older stuff because at least you know it is worth the time.
I’m just wondering if there used to be some sort of “quality control” in the recording industry that no longer exists with the new production model. Do you think there is some Walmartesque quantity over quality issue?
I’m not anti-hit single btw, you can’t help listening for that – even on the SRL contest. But it does get kind of boring…”Oh he sounds like Belinda Carlisle’s second cousin – they will probably do well.”
Posted by: meribella at November 27, 2006 10:39 AM
You take cold calls on the radio, respond to instant messages on SRL, and answer hundreds of questions on this website - and yet you receive complaints about harsh tone or sarcasm when dealing with someone who isn’t listening. How do you deal with that? Does it ever seem that it is never enough for some people and they just keep demanding and never expect any consequences?

the great thing about creativity is that it puts you in a position of power over SOMETHING. one could easily get the notion that we reside in a society that feels very powerless. so many people are just searching for some kind of validation.

Isis,
I read your question about Autism. My brother is autistic but I didn't know that until recently. He was diagnosed as being "retarded" (Their word not mine)as a child. However, he went to college and has had the same job for years. He still lives with my dad and has never had a relationship. I just thought he was different until I started putting two and two together and asked my dad. I asked him if my brother would have to live with me after he died and he said "no, he'll be better by then" (Denial I believe). I guess my brother is pretty high functioning. Anyway, any thoughts on the subject?

Great Sunday 10. I love, love, LOVE (and can relate to) what you say about creativity. It's this thought-provoking, real, heartfelt kind of stuff that keeps people like me checking in and coming back for more.
Awesome, refreshingly honest and hilarious answer to #6 as well, although I'm sorry and sad to hear that this is the case.
Back to what I call the "curse of creativity": I can empathize with Vixen. Creativity in and of itself is a wonderful state of being, but creativity shared is, IMO, the ultimate joy in life and something too few of us get to experience regularly. Once you have a slight taste of it, say, as a kid or something, you want more... And it sucks not to have it.
At the same time, we shouldn't need the validation of others to enjoy the things we do.
Such a paradox, life.
On that note, I'm about to drive off into the sunset (actually the moonlight) to see where the night takes me.
All the best,

Hey Dave. Hope you had a relaxing holiday. Here's one to go with Tommy's Thanksgiving thought...if someone shot the cat - - or a rooster, we'd be eating cock too... a well-balanced meal, how nice. And I had a feeling you were a strong black coffee kind of guy. Thanks for answering that. As Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge." Imagine a creation...then make it a reality, real. Oh yeah, here's a question...if you WERE to open a live bait store, would it be for fresh water or salt water fish. Streams or oceans? Or would it be along some big Looney lake somewhere? I think oceans. Deep. But then you'd have to go bigger than just worms - chum, and it wouldn't be live - - so maybe streams, but then you'd have to learn how to tie a fly... ha ha. Don't answer that. I'll imagine :) Peace from New Mexico.

Hi Dave!
Our local Starbucks cannot get around the fact
that a customer sometimes wants just black
coffee with a double shot of espresso. No stuff.
No syrup. And sweet heaven, no cinnamon! Just
"naked" slightly heart-pounding coffee!
Have been reading through..for Max Danieli--
try to temper the sarcasm--gentle advice from
a tart-tongued individual. When you get around
to dealing with the public everyday, much more
gets accomplished when you present a gracious
"public face". Even if you know that you're
dealing with the world's biggest jackass. I
don't think it's something we learn overnight.
I still grit my teeth when my patience is
tested. Good luck!
Interesting reading, as always, Dave. Keep
well! Sending love xx a.wolf

Hi Dave,
its always a good read here. you give so much of yourself, it is very much appreciated. and as to who it is that's creating the magic here, you or the regular/non-celeb readers submitting the questions: i think its a tie.
i liked the Q&A about creativity and also the why do you write this and interact with us: as a writer, its incredibly rewarding when someone is reading your stuff. In the past you were often referred to as: comma The Rock Guitarist but now when other writers quote you or write about you they also add (comma!) he's got a really interesting blog going, etc. yeah! all your talents get recognized. i'm sure you genuinely enjoy the love & admiration we offer to you but creative people are also good business people. and what you create in words and music brings lots of joy to us, in our own lives. helps me be more creative.
take care. hi everyone! just a lovefeast going on...

Hi Dave,
Did you know that Starbucks generates waste of 30 MILLION paper cups every day? Plus 30 million paper sleeves and 30 million plastic lids. Only 10% of the raw materials come from recycled paper. 90% is virgin paper.
Wouldn't it be great if Starbucks offered a significant discount to people who brought their own cups to be filled? Would you be willing to bring your own cup if they started a program like that? Not that anything like that is in the works (that I know of) but I'm curious if regular Starbucks patrons would respond to it.

Denise - you get me.
a77:
Thanks for the reply and the sharing of thoughts. But just so you know, I truly do not and never did expect a break to happen "to" me arbitrarily - I'm old enough and ugly enough to know that writing isn't a process like reality tv whereby you get picked because you swear the loudest, have the most obnoxious personality or the biggest tits. (aka Big Brother). Suffice to leave it at that. Just try and understand my point is that FOR ME the journey, the need, the love of creating, the discovery of the self, NONE of it is enough. Also, FYI, it isn't about "fame" - when I write and send it to places I don't use my real name. So it's hardly that. The validation I want is for me. Not kudos or fame, but financial rewards that would signify I had reached a certain standard.
Dave, scuse me borrowing space to answer.
Peace.
