Everyone must be watching The American Music Awards. Carmen just introduced Barry Manilow, I bet she loved having to introduce such a boring singer!

Don't forget to watch Rockstar Supernova on Jimmy Kimmel tonight!

Posted by: Linda from San Diego at November 21, 2006 10:38 PM

I have to say that the minute Lucas won I lost interest. That was only cemented by his interview in New Zealand on "The Rock" radio station where they said afterwards that he was the most assured self-centred little bastard they'd interviewed. Didn't exactly endear me to buying a ticket no matter how sexy I think TL or Gilby is!!!

Posted by: Vicki at November 21, 2006 11:07 PM

I have to agree with Vicki. I have no interest in Rockstar Supernova, simply because, I do not like Lucas(sp). I thought, and this is strictly opinion, that he came across as an egocentric jerk from the very beginning. I, personally, could care less about a Rockstar Supernova release, however, I do own The Panic Channel and TNO.

Posted by: isis at November 21, 2006 11:15 PM

I have to disagree, Lukas is not arrogant at all. I went to several Rockstar tapings, Lukas was very nice and interacted with his fans. Last night, at Jimmy Kimmel show, he came up to me when I said I had a letter for him. He gave me a hug, and signed autographs for several fans. On Rockstar they wanted to make Lukas look like this years JD. In person he is kind and genuine.

Posted by: Linda from San Diego at November 21, 2006 11:43 PM

god, here we go again with the whole rockstar or not a rockstar dialogue! Lukas won, period. Point of Dave's last post was THE MUSIC INDUSTRY and the lack of support for a "new" band that is at least full of experienced rockers who have a great fanbase and bring with them their own interest. Love Lukas or hate him - he won a major competition on a TV show - and IF ALL THAT CAN'T GET SOME ATTENTION from their own record label what the hell is happening in that industry? Where does it leave others that are just starting out? If Dave did not get behind the new bands and do his damndest to promote new music then who does in the US?
Here in the UK we have national Radio One. Great sometimes - appalling at others. They are the giants of the airwaves. But the point is that they have a slogan "In new music we trust" and the DJ's get EXCITED about discovering new bands, new sounds and have special shows and promos just for that. Plenty of bands like the Arctic Monkeys, Razorlight, Snowpatrol have benefited from their patronage. The way it's backfired to some degree here is that at gigs - Radio One feels the need to be there promote and broadcast the gig. And usually, if they do that it's shite - loses the atmosphere etc for example Eminem. And the RHCP gigs for me used to be ten thousand per cent better without the influx of the pop princesses but the point is Radio One attempts to bring it to the listeners. It's about a job that isn't being done - not who won Rockstar SN.
Have a great week.

I don't recall Dave mentioning anything about Lukas' talent or his personality in his statement. It was about the music industry not promoting their own artists, correct? I think all Vixen was trying to say is the fact that Dave trying his best to promote new bands should not turn into a bashing session for those who don't like Lukas.

I though the first ROCKSTAR had heart for the obvious reasons. I watched every single episode on the edge of my seat, as well as on my damn feet dancing! This years show was as, if not more interesting than last years show, yet I did feel it lacked the heart that the 1st season lacked. However, please note, that NOT one single second did I ever, I mean EVER, considering purchasing the album(s) that CBS show spawned, ever. I can bet on my Mom's life, and mine, that I don't care about the them. But if there is another season will I watch, with baited breath and even vote a few times? You bet!!

When you are warming up, or playing for yourself, are there certain songs that you always play just to start getting into the right frame of mind or to warm up your hands. For me I have a couple of songs and riffs that I wrote to start out and a few others songs like JA's Stop, Pleasure Clubs Heatwave Radio and Hendrix's Voodoo Chile. It helps me get into the mood and get my hands get the loosened up.

hi dave...you and the Panic Channel are suppose to be coming to Ottawa, Canada this Saturday as part of the supernova tour...are you still coming? rumour is you are not...i REALLY hope you are...

Posted by: Ellie at November 22, 2006 07:59 AM

Have you ever thought of doing your own label, Dave? Or did you do that already? Anyway, you should.

People could download music from your site from your label and maybe other like-minded labels. Roxy Saint sounds great. Just the kind of music that I like and would buy.

On a somewhat related thread:

I don't use iTunes because I can't play the music where i want to and that drives me nuts! Basically, you can only play the song that you supposedly bought on either an iPod or on your mac. I do own a mac, but I also have a digital stereo system that can't play Apple's propriety format, so basically any song I download is useless.

I use eMusic (lots of independant bands, but somewhat limited in selection) because they provide mp3's.

We need more music download sites that let you actually own the music.

I was surprised to see that lack of fan-fare on I-tunes also, nothing on mtv.com save the oblilgatory new releases sentence, no interview, no 3 paragraph thingy... I had two thoughts ,the first, is rssn trying to keep things low-key like limp-bizkit did with "the truth" put it out there see who buys & likes it let it create it's own "buzz". if it builds and gets big great, if not, well the record company didn't invest alot to market and no harm no foul. the strategy backfired on lb but has worked for others...

the second, are the songs a mess ? is there a single? are the listenable ? did jason's injury and subsequent tour cancellation lower everyone's expectations ? or is the bands a & r guy a douche bag ?

It's sad to me to see the lack of support. T-Lee is a big kid who wants you to listen to his gift and hopes you like it, and maybe if you're a hot chick bang you after you listen, but he's happiest making music and that has been evident from the cheapest seats since shout at the devil.

That Roxy Saint vid is def. NSFW, but the tunes are cool... thx.

The record industry discussion is a very interesting one. Apparently the music industry is just as screwed up as many other industries right now! Or in nicer words, it's in a transitional state due to emerging technologies, cultural shifts, etc. What this means down the line is anyone's guess... hopefully it means new opportunities and new avenues for self-expression and promotion.

In any case, I was thinking about this and I came up with a way to better promote new music like the new RSSN record: Better integration between music marketing and celebrity gossip!

Think about it: Celebrity gossip is all the rage now. Look at Dave as an example. When the TPC record came out, everyone knew that he was getting divorced from Carmen and was allegedly boinking Jenna Jameson and what-have-you. But nobody knew squat about his new music unless I specifically mentioned it to them. WTF? Does that make sense?

There is a solution. If the gossip outlets (US, L&S, the Sun, Perez Hilton, etc.) mentioned people's artistic projects as much as - and in conjunction with - the references to canoodling, weight, fashion, scandals, etc., then everyone in the world would know about this stuff. I'm talking more references to albums and release dates, more links to websites... plugs, plugs, plugs galore. People are sheep. They'll eat this stuff up.

Only half-joking,

Posted by: Denise at November 22, 2006 09:06 AM

Did anyone watch the handsomedonkey stuff after the Roxy Saint video? OMG - I laughed so hard - it was all great. Nothing better than a laugh til I cry kind of laugh. OK - ALMOST nothing better than a laugh til I cry kind of laugh - lol

Roxy Saint is sexy as hell...am I alone in thinking that?

As for the music "business", it's totally pathetic. The labels throw rock music out to the public with a "we'll see what happens" attitude, but their hip-hop and bubble-gum pop acts get MASSIVE support. I, and many more people I'm sure, had no idea that the RSSN CD was coming out this week until we heard the last Camp Freddy broadcast. Nice job Epic!

Talking about Camp Freddy, when can we get "the most anticipated Christmas song EVER"..."Merry Christmas Everybody"?

There's nothing that's anymore screwed up about corporations than before, and it's got nothing to do with 'cultural shifts' or 'emerging technologies'. It's about greed, same old, same old.

The difference now is that people can say no and do it themselves through these new avenues. But you're right. Sheep.

And gossip blogs do promote music..not that I read those anything. (Perez has music on his site all the time, but it's usually the stuff he likes or not.)

I think our internet/model/abused as a little girl sums it up best with the above statement, and oh yes it is totally relevant.....

To all those unemployed music reps: We don't like going to the mall w/o money and when myspace and all that jazz started up in the beloved 1990's (1996) consumers were given power. It was the seed that became the giant, and for that we are thankful today. Don't ever, and I mean ever, underestimate the almighty and ultimatly powerful consumer. (that would be Fan to you and to me.)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Posted by: D at November 22, 2006 10:57 AM

Dave,

Regarding your issue with Epic not pushing Supernova - why should they(Epic)? I'm all about bands that deserve exposure getting exposure and backing, but let's be honest, when was the last time Gilby, Jason, or Tommy put out good music?
Seriously when? Tommy going solo? Guns and Met? (which were many yrs ago when Jason/Gilby were in those bands - and how much of the songwriting did either of them really contribute?)
I would rather Epic put money into a band that actually deserves it for there creativity and art not for past glories and TV shows.

I agree with Damon from above. The show RSN was great because it was a contest to make somebody out of nobody. But as it progressed, I was to discover that the group RSN really had nothing interesting to offer. Their advice was decent, but their riffs and tunes were very weak. It began to look like they thought that they were exalted when really they looked exhausted.

I would not buy anything they put out - ever.

Exactly. Business is all about greed and always has been. I'm saying that changing times and technology (i.e. the internet, blogs, iPods etc.) have forced companies (music and otherwise) to try and find new ways to be greedy with their employees and customers.

As for gossip blogs, I'm not up on ALL of them all the time, so you could be right. All I know is that when it comes to celebs, I hear much more about their social lives than I do about the actual work they do. And I'm not even seeking that information out. It instantly becomes collective knowledge somehow.

Imagine if that were the case with regards to new music releases... imagine if that information was as pervasive and unavoidable as all the other nonsense.

I certainly do not pretend to have the answers to any of this. Just offering my perspective as a music connisseur and consumer.

Ciao for now,

Dave,

Totally off the subject, but by the looks of the comments that is a good thing, I told a friend that has netflix about Cannibal Holocaust.
He got it, watched it & brought it in for me to watch. Between his comments and yours, it appears my holiday weekend is going to be disturbing. Not to mention I am also going to watch Saw & Saw II again. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!! ENJOY. NIKI

Posted by: Merc957 at November 22, 2006 12:41 PM

Yeah, I agree about reading too much about musician's social lives instead of their work. But I think fans want different stuff according to the musician. Someone like Dave Navarro, its about other stuff apart from his music because he puts himself out there for it. There are a lot of more brilliant musicians who don't because they are too busy focusing on..well, their music. Dave Navarro is interesting though, I can't say why. I don't like his recent music. I do like his internet radio and camp freddy stuff.
I've been looking through a lot of musicians on the web recently, and some of the best and most respected are developing interesting web sites and Myspace pages that attract genuine comments as opposed to online groupies and wannabe porn stars saying "yo sexy."

"magine if that were the case with regards to new music releases... imagine if that information was as pervasive and unavoidable as all the other nonsense.

Hi denise,

Nice response. I agree with you.

Somehow music used to be pervasive (without the internet). It was about word of mouth with the help of radio. I suppose, and then it kind of got out of control with all these media companies becoming one or two ginormous companies telling us what we should be listening to. So maybe you're right with blogs and personal podcasts and pirate radio that we'll get back to the word of mouth and also consumer choice.

That's what the corporations are afraid of, they are worried about competition and choice for the consumer, and they should be.

Have a peaceful thanksgiving, everyone.

but ill get more money soon which means ill get supernovas soon.I think lukas is a fresh face and will do just fine.

I also agree with the 67/67 family here on the post being about the industry not backing a widely known form tv band. now who like or dislikes supernova they have their own site and such i am sure for that .Hell rockstar supernova had its own site and it was spilling over here because people didnt like Daves opinion , the way i feel ,Dont like daves opinion dont read his blog man. stop stressing yerself out. To be honnest i didnt like two key member of supernova but im not bashing them either, why cause i like theyre music i just dont like the peron they are themselves , but then agin i ponly know what i see on tv i dont know the real people.someone shared meeting lukas and he was a genuinely cool guy thats good to hear that his ego hasnt got boigger then his fan base and hes still down to earth .
GOOD LUCK ROCKSTAR SUPERNOVA

Well, the video was great and for my American friends here is a little something I will pass on since it is your Thanksgiving, we here in Canada had it in October and we use this same family recipe at Christmas. Enjoy! Perhaps I should sent this to the record company too. Oh and I heard a promo for the RSSN release on my radio station on Tuesday.

Easy Chicken Recipe
Here is a chicken recipe that also includes the use of popcorn as a stuffing - imagine that. When I found this recipe, I thought it was perfect for people like me, who just are not sure how to tell when poultry is thoroughly cooked, but not dried out. Give this a try.
BAKED STUFFED CHICKEN

6-7 lb. Chicken
1 cup melted butter
1 cup stuffing (Pepperidge Farm is good.)
1 cup uncooked popcorn (ORVILLE
REDENBACHER'S LOW FAT
Salt/pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush chicken well with melted butter salt, and pepper. Fill cavity with stuffing and popcorn. Place in baking pan with the neck end toward the back of the oven. Listen for the popping sounds. When the chicken's ass blows the oven door open and the chicken flies across the room, it's done.

Love ya all lots,

I picked up the Supernova CD yesterday and I have to say it's pretty friggin' good. People who say it sucks just because they hated the whole process or whatever, they can bite one. Good music is good music, period. I'm curious to when Dave heard the whole disc and what he thinks about it as a musician. As a musician myself, it sounds awful tasty. Better than I expected, I'll admit that much. As for the Epic backing, there weren't many copies in the stores I went to, and that part bugs me like crazy if that means they only stocked a few. But that also might mean fans snatched them up fast too. I think you'll see a nice wave of pub after they find out how many true fans of the show there were statistically.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

And thanks to Dave for making all of this possible, and for always doing your part to make the world a more musical and entertaining place. The universe is lucky to have you in it!

Happy Thanksgiving 67 Family, Agents and Dave!

I'm very thankful for the great people I've come to know and love, and all the good music you've exposed me to, through the online worlds you've created for us. As always...thanks for everything you do.

Hope everyone has a great day and make sure to stuff yourselves w/ tons of great food! (extra carbs for you Dave!)

Love, Amber :)
