Sunday 10

1. Why is TPC not playing the Vegas shows with Supernova?

Because the NYE SN show isn't part of the tour, it's just a special warm up show for the band. The actual tour that we are on starts up roughly 2 weeks later.

2. Why is it that in all of your Halloween photos your not smiling? Are you not having fun?

Really, I don't have an answer for that... I had a blast!! I think that maybe it was one of those things where we got hammered for pictures so many times by different wire services, that it kind of took us out of the moment. Also, historically speaking, I have never really been a "posed" smiler in pictures. I am sure that random fly on the wall images would reveal a totally different story.

3. Would you share with us your favorite Thanksgiving memory?

There are many favorites that are heart warming and full of laughter and love, but the one that ALWAYS gets brought up at the table by my Dad every year, is the 7-UP story. He'll get this big smile on his face and say, "Hey Dave, don't worry... We have plenty of 7-UP!" He is referring to a Thanksgiving many years ago, when I made up an excuse that my girlfriend had a bad stomach and needed 7-UP. Johnny & I left to "get 7-UP" and instead, drove downtown to cop some heroin. We were gone for like an hour and when we got back, we didn't even have any 7-UP with us. It was more than obvious to the whole family where we had gone. So, I guess when they joke about it now, it's both funny and a way to give thanks and celebrate the fact that we are both so far away from that life. It's nice when you can look back on times and truly be grateful for where you have been and how far you have come.

4. How's the torn ligament doing? Feeling any better?

Much better thank you! The swelling has gone down quite a bit and it's looking like I won't have to have a surgery after all.

5. Would you be against someone, say me, getting a tat relatively like your 'trust no one'? I'd hate to get it done and have you be upset.

Never would I be upset. It's actually part of a quote by the Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero. He said, "Trust no one unless you have eaten much salt with him." What was upsetting to me back then, was learning that the quote was also official The X-Files catch phrase! Whatever... At the time I had never seen The X-Files. Years later, when I found out it was a really cool show, I was relieved. The quote is also known as an old sailor's adage.

6. Also, what is your opinion on LOST being postponed until Feb?

You're kidding! Is that true? See? Based on how last season went, I am not surprised at all. As much as I enjoy the show, that is precisely why I chose to avoid it all together this season and just wait for the DVD of the whole thing. I had a feeling that they would put us through a bunch of waiting and reruns and recaps and bullshit. If it were at all possible, I would sue the network for the many hours of my life that have been "LOST". Thank God for season 7 of West Wing on DVD!

7. Do you go running to keep in shape or are there other reasons? A smoker who runs is kinda strange.

I run to keep in shape, to keep the blood moving, to burn calories and to clear the head. I guess it's better to smoke and run than to smoke and not run... As for it being strange? I've been called strange for a lot of reasons, but this is a first.

8. What did you think of all the fans going out and getting the TPC "sigil" tattooed? Commitment? Crazy? Or should be committed?

I think it's awesome. I look at it as support for the band, the players, who we are as individuals and mutual respect among the community members. It is also, quite simply, just a cool looking design that Steve created. I can tell you that Steve, many in our crew and I have the tattoo as well. When I see it, I get a family vibe, a cult vibe, and a positive community vibe. Tattoos mark a time in one's life. Personally, I don't get all hung up on the whys and forevers about the whole thing. At the end of the day, we are all gonna be dust anyway, so we might as well do the things we want to do while we are here, provided we don't hurt anyone in the process. Of course we are never going to be perfect and are likely to hurt others in our lives. We can at least learn from that behavior, take responsibility and try to not repeat that behavior again. Do I think it's crazy? No. Is life hard and full of tough choices? Yes. Tattoos rank pretty low on the scale of things that I think are crazy and worth committing people for. In fact, they almost don't even register, except in rare cases where phrases and art are meant to alienate racial or religious groups.

9. What caused the breakdown in relations between you and the band members that led to your departure?

Well, in short, I would say that overall musical differences was the main issue and when drug abuse came into the picture, it was obvious to everyone that it just wasn't going to work. Fortunately, breakdowns between me and the band members have been rectified long ago and we remain friends to this day. I am a huge fan of all the players and truly love the music that they continue to put out. If there is one band from my era that has stood the test of time and has successfully survived through many hardships as well as glories, it's the RHCP!

10. Hey Dave is your time in the Red Hot Chili Peppers represented accurately in Anthony Kiedis' autobiography?

HAHA! Well, I haven't read the whole book, but I did read an excerpt about a particular rehearsal that was completely accurate! (At least to my foggy recollection!) If you haven't read Anthony's book, pick it up. Just from the little I skimmed through, it looks like an awesome read!

Dave, you mentioned before that if you weren't a muscian, you'd be a filmmaker.

Why haven't you ever directed any music videos? It seems like that's a great melange of your actual and your back-up careers. Will you ever step behind the camera?

How's Brooke Burke doing with the pregnancy? Hope she's well!

And a question or two for Sunday 10.
Do you enjoy writing? I know you said ONe was concieved in a sort of generic way by jamming and playing with friends - music for pleasure but I wondered if you were more conscious at times about the creative process sometimes and if you ever "felt" like picking up a pen and writing lyrics or if music always was born by direct involvement with the instrument?

Also - THIS am curious(!)about - Dave, do you pick up your guitars when you're alone and just play for the hell of it or to express something or is it always for an audience? I wondered how much is internal and how much you are aware of what's around you when you're really rockin it out on stage?
I ask cos I write. And that will make zero sense. Ok, got artist friends who paint who say they feel like they're flying when they paint. And I lose it when I write, the world could burn, wouldn't notice.
So, what is it like when you're as good as you are and is it all encompassing?
Thanks.
Have a lovely weekend and be well!
x

Judging from your last name, I presume that you are desended from the Navarro region of Spain (please correct me if my presumption is erroneous).
If so, does you Spanish heritage influence your musical style and song writing?
Also, you seem to be fairly religious (again I am risking a presumption; Catholic?). If that is the case, how do your religious beliefs influence your musical expression and artistic interpretations?
Thanks in advance for your time,
Bill.

Hey Dave - a couple of 10's for ya.

You seem to have a morbid fascination with all things death - why is that?
(didn't it creep you out laying on the autopsy tables for your photo shoot with Carmen?)

There used to be a show in Aussie hosted by Andrew Denton and every week he would have a guest artist/band on. The rule was however, that the only song they could play on the show was "Stairway to Heaven"

There were so many amazing/different/weird/funny versions of the song that a video was released featuring only the guest spots from the show. (that's where the Rolf Harris version complete with wobbleboard appeared)

So, the question is:
Would you consider doing a similar thing for SLR with Stairway to Heaven or another classic song?

Do you ever why it is that you are so famous and receive so much adulation for being good looking and playing a guitar, while people like Nurses and firefighters get poor pay and little recognition? I'm not saying this as a criticism -its just the way things are....

I have to say, your answer to #3, made me cry. Someone I love very much is a heroine addict and after 2 years I had to walk away. He is in the worst condition of his life and my heart has been crushed. I can't tell you how proud I am of you for what you have accomplished and how far you have come. That is where my admiration for you truly lies. It's what brought me here and keeps me here. You are truly an inspiration. I just hope more people find what you found on their own level. Whatever works, I hope he finds it. Thank you for all you do and all you are. I appreciate your path in life. and thank you for giving me a place that makes me feel a little understood.

Dave, what is your opinion of GN'R canceling their Portland, ME concert because they could not drink on stage? I only ask because I remember in your book that you had thought or
wanted to join their band years ago. I find it odd that a rock and roll band would do that? If they really wanted to drink, then drink. I thought breaking rules was part of the anarchy of rock and roll or are they just spoiled in the old age with wanting to get away with things and not dealing with the negative consequences(ie fines, jail time). In retrospect, are you glad that you did not join?(they released a statement saying that they would not be allowed to play to their usual high standards - apparently they think they play better drunk than sober). Who knows? Maybe they do? I can't say I am a big fan either way.

Also, what is your opinion on LOST being postponed until Feb?

I'm glad your ankle feels better! :-)

On Nov 11th at the 11th hour,
there were a number of very somber Remembrance Day ceremonies in Canada to pay respects to war veterans as well as to all soldiers, past and present, involved in overseas peace keeping missions .

**Question for the Sunday 10**
I'm wondering if "our" collective written emails of support were ever sent to the injured army soldiers recovering in the Kleber Army Kaserne Medical Centre in Kaiserslautern Germany?
Do you continue to receive email from the support staff at the Medical Centre?

Dave,

I fully agree with your reaction to the LOST BS.
Season 1 was great, and all of the Ernst on your shoulder jokes were hilarious. I even bought Season1 on DVD so I could rewatch the episodes.

I couldn't wait for Season2. When S2 started I would rush home from work so I wouldn't miss an episode.
I was so pissed that the network was trying to fill an entire year of weekly timeslots with reruns and recaps, rather than airing new episodes to sequentially develop the plot during a regular season.

I choose to no longer support or watch the show.
They can all Go Eat an Ernst Dick! hahaha

Hi Dave,

This is just a curiosity question but it couldn't hurt to try it for Sunday 10. I was wondering, since you're always so informed on different independent project scenes going on, I was wondering if you've seen the Free Hugs campaign video going around on Youtube? Where this guy, Juan Mann, decided to record himself going out with a sign that said "Free Hugs" on it and put it on youtube to inspire people to spread the love? If so, I was just curious about your opinion of it and if you'd ever consider doing something like that, since you like doing quirky projects?

Evening Dave. :-) I’m happy to hear your foot is starting to feel better. Hope that’s the last health bobble you have to deal with for many, many moons, brother. Awww… :-) I don’t want to trespass on personal stuff, dude. But I am very joyful for all the people in your life, including yourself, that you made some different choices that have left you healthier, surrounded by some really great folks, sharing your gifts, helping others, enjoying life and rockin’ out in style. I have not found anything worse in the world, yet, than seeing a loved one in trouble—whether it’s from addiction or something else—and being basically helpless to assist or ‘save’ them. When people pull out of that spin, few things bring me greater joy. I love to see human potential and creative gifts realized and celebrated, instead of ruined and wasted. It’s funny. I was just talking to someone about tattoos today. Their rather strong position was that they despise tattoos and they only equate them with what was done to Holocaust survivors by Hitler’s regime during WWII. Among other things, I replied that tattoos, branding and body art have been part of human culture and civilization for hundreds and thousands of years. They have been significant to several cultures, including many non-Western and non-European ones. So I refuse to let the actions of a heinous madman co-opt the meaningfulness and aestheticism of such art forms. I recognize the eternal significance of what happened to Holocaust victims and survivors and know how important it is to remember and honor them for all they have survived and endured. That’s why I value your story with the survivor you met and the tattoo you got to honor her and that experience. I think that’s a better response than condemning all tattoos. I happen to like tattoos/body art and respect how for someone like yourself they represent important experiences and times in your life. Ironically, I don’t have any of my own. Yet. ;-) Although if I keep seeing them on rockin’ ‘bad boys,’ who knows, I may get that itch, someday. LOL Or, maybe I’ll treat it like the makeup situation and figure all that stuff looks better on you lads than it would on me. ;-) Hope you have a lovely night and peace to all the peeps.

Since we are not up to TEN yet-

Talking about The x=files, do you believe in extraterrestrials?

Do you believe in ghosts?

Wondering if you have had any encounters with either of these?

Have a good week! Db

We all know that 99 percent of the blogosphere is a complete waste of time, but Dave, reading your stuff on addiction and life, and some of the heartfelt responses, well, it just restores some (underline some) of my faith in humanity. Keep on doing what your doing, it's working. Much love...

Oh, I was pulling into a gas station earlier today and I accidentally cut off someone in a trashed out camper who started taunting me with racial slurs. I ignored her because I figured, hell, I've got alot more to lose than her if I beat the crap out of her, which I was sorely tempted to do. Dave, you ever been in that situation? What would you do? I've got some zen training in me and I think that made me stop and consider the consequences of violence. Later...

Glad to hear your foot is better! I've found when one has a back problem, it can be really buggered up by a foot problem too... you start walking trying to keep the weight off the bad foot and throw spine out of alignment.. yada yada.. :)

A Sunday Top 10 question.

Would you ever consider becoming a journalist yourself? If so, what kind of tough questions would you ask and to whom?

Oh my gosh, Dave. Watch Lost! They're promising not to do reruns anymore in the middle of the season, and JUST WATCH IT SUSPENSE IS GOOD.

Hey Dave is your time in the Red Hot Chili Peppers represented accurately in Anthony Kiedis' autobiography? What caused the breakdown in relations between you and the band members that led to your departure?

Dave I like the fact that you keep life real.
As a recovering addict myself it's nice to see you using your talents for better use than self absorbtion. You talk about the simple things that you do that others can identify with but at the same time you a great musician with charisma that people can look up to. THANKS
