Sunday 10

1. With respect to accurate reporting do you think the 'Whores' book by Brendan Mullen (about Jane's Addiction) paints a fair picture?

To be honest, I have not read the book. My understanding is that the majority is made up of quotes from people who were around at the time. I'm sure that the quotes are accurate, but in terms of what they actually say, I don't know. The excerpts I have read appear to be pretty factual.

2. As a former drug addict, do you still wake up each day and have to think about not doing drugs or is it something that is so far behind you now that you don't even think about it?

Well, I don't think about doing drugs anymore but in order to avoid falling into that pattern, there are several things I have to do instead. Prayer, gym, service to others, living an honest & straight up life to name a few. Plus, I simply enjoy life too much to fall back into the trap of pain, isolation and self destruction. Frankly, I'm just having too much fun!

3. Where did you get your cat scarf?

That cat scarf came from Emily the Strange.

4. Do you ever get the urge to travel and disappear into the world somewhere for a little while and if so, where would you like to go?

Tattoo removal, shave, a move to Colorado... Open a Bait & Tackle Shop? No. I have no idea what you mean.

5. Can you Podcast SRL? If not why?

I could but we put the shows into rotation on the station when I am not live, so they are streaming at all times anyway. I cast CFR because that show is only two hours a week, whereas SRL is going 24/7.

6. You often speak about knowing the difference between Art and Entertainment. What is your definition of each?

In simple terms, to me, art is a creative expression that stems from the heart and soul and breeds self exploration and self examination, whereas entertainment is just some shit we enjoy that takes us out of our heads for a moment. Example: Creating Music=Art/Reality TV=Entertainment

7. Any news on the photobooth exhibit?

Still working on that. We are hoping to have it together before the tour in January.

8. What are your thoughts on the closing/eviction of CBGB in NY and their future move to possibly Las Vegas?

I think Vegas needs a good Rock Club. I think it would be rad, but I am already tired of hearing how it's not the same, and nobody has even said that yet. Heads up: IT WON'T BE THE SAME BECAUSE IT ISN'T THE SAME! I hate it when people get all uppity about things when they change. Like, "I was there when it was cool.... blah, blah, blah..." Whatever. If it moves to Vegas, I'll fuckin go, son... Ya herd?

9. I still would like to know how you justify having anti-Semitic symbols on both your arms (the Aleister Crowley designs) and the "Not by choice" tattoo. Yes, a wee bit silly choosing to get a tattoo that says not by choice?

Well, I never have to justify any tattoo I get and I live with forever, but it is an interesting question so I will take it. The "I have one, but not by choice" tattoo documents a very powerful conversation I had with a Survivor. Yes, I know that the Jewish people don't believe in tattooing the body, but guess what? I do! I am not Jewish. Therefore I can honor them in any fashion I choose. The Crowley design (Unicursal Hexagram) was originally created by The Golden Dawn, who had a deep understanding of Kabbalah. It wasn't until later that Crowley adapted the symbol. Jane's used the Hexagram as an early design and that is a major reason as to why I got the ink. Oh and by the way, half of the band's members are of the Jewish faith. So, a wee bit silly? People get tattoos of running hot dogs and flying toasters... You can read into things all you want, but for me, both works are in honor of things that have affected me in a profound way.

10. How do you feel when you see people your age with 9-5 jobs and families with their little picket fences? Would you ever have considered that life?

Sometimes it looks good, but I know I am way happier doing what I am doing. Some people are more cut out for one certain existence over another. In fact, one of my best friends, Todd, has that life and he loves it. My parents have that life. Come to think of it, it's not like what you are talking about is an alien way of living to me at all. I need to be on my own clock... I like to be able to pick up and move whenever I feel like it and have the space to create and tour and do all the stuff that makes me feel happy and productive.

Posted by: The Ren at October 22, 2006 10:11 AM

Dave, you have been through so much, and you've really turned your life around. You're an inspiration to anyone (pretty much all of us in one way or another) who wants to change their life for the better. On top of that, you're sweet as sugar pie with honey on top!

Sending you white light, peace and love, and good wishes for finding the love you want in your life. You deserve it!

Dave,
It is so good to hear that you were able to turn things around for you. I have heard that once you have been an addict that gets clean you spend the rest of your life working at staying clean. Your fans are proud of you for doing it!

Ok, what happened to the other seven? Did no one ask any kicking Q's this week? Did we bore you? I want to know (politely) why you haven't got hold of Adam Ant for a CFR line up - he can't be that hard to find and reports were that he is ok for now healthwise and was signing books here in the UK. Please contact him, you're such a connected guy it can't be that difficult.
Secondly - the whole plastics debate. Would you be prepared to concede that it is a personality issue which leads to girls without - hating girls with :)
3) What are you going to dress up as at Halloween?
4) Have you ever thought about visiting the concentration camps or if you've been I don't know and I'm sorry for my ignorance.
5) Have you read Harry Potter and Tolkien?
That will do for now.
Thanks Dave,
xx.

A question came up in chat last night...dear Dave, what's the latest on the photobooth show?

ummm, that's about all I got..doncha wish! I'm watching American President, I think of it as the pilot of the West Wing, have you ever seen it, you can see how the characters first appeared...Martin Sheen as Leo, Michael J. Fox as Josh/Sam and Anna Deavere Smith, who turned out to play the National Security Adviser, as a C.J. prototype...unfortunately, no Ainsley..haha

Have a great anything goes Sunday..what's your favorite frozen yogurt du jour?
love,
jezzi(the Strange)

Dave, thank you 4 the awesome show the other night and 4 such candid answers thus far today. I love this blog~ Question please, how many years, if any, did u suffer from panic attacks while being in public places? Thanx Dave.

Posted by: Carly at October 22, 2006 10:29 AM

Hi Dave, Hi Fam,

Just thinking how strange and lovely it was to be in chat last night. (Although I have to say I was gutted I didn't get a peek of the webcam!)

Q: The caller from last night who mentioned about us British being all superior, and acting like we owned the USA; do you see any truth in his way of thinking?

Happy Sunday and Out

Reckless Princess, Omg no!! That guy was nutz. What would we do w/o England? The artistic gifts they have given the world alone boggle my mind. I think the English are quite charming and engaging so let's not give that guy any more thought. ~Freedom of speach still reigns.

Posted by: Carly at October 22, 2006 11:02 AM

Funny thing is (I am British by the way) A lot of Brits do believe that we own the USA and they usually back up their claims with good evidence,
I wont go into specifics, but a lot of New York is owned by Scots.

Dave, would it be fair to assume that you and the rest of the band are dissapointed with Capitol?...or can't you really comment?

Posted by: Steve L at October 22, 2006 11:36 AM

I mean do you ever get the urge to be anonymous for a few weeks and just travel somewhere where people won't recognize you. Doesn't it bother you that you can't really walk down the street without people noticing you? (But I like the tackle shop idea. I'd leave the tatoos, though.)

I find the whole idea of celebrity kind of creepy, I guess.

good Morning Dave and Everyone! its a beautiful day in my area.
How wonderful of you Dave for letting us know your sources of strength. When we each are dealing with some bad times at any given point in our lives, its so helpful to hear what others do to keep from going back on that path of destruction.
Recovery is hell and I imagine a lot of people find strength in knowing you got thru it, you're happy now and appreciate all that life has to offer. It really shows when you talk about watching movies or driving around with friends without a set destination to go to--just happy to be alive on the journey and soaking in the simple pleasures of life.
for anyone struggling today with some kind of problem, peace and love go out to you. hang in thre.

Posted by: Six7Six7 at October 22, 2006 02:34 PM

Afternoon Dave. :-) Thanks for the Sunday Five-ish... ;-) Again, addiction is something that seems to eventually 'hit close to home' for everyone. I certainly know the agony, heartbreak and chaos it has caused folks close to my soul and everyone around them. Seeing you happy, healthy and sharing your gifts, surrounded by sweet, supportive, funny and creative people just fills my heart with joy, man. :-D Think of how much good you do in the world supporting Indie/emerging artists, inspiring people with your music, 'taking it back' and supporting wonderful causes. I've heard you call yourself a narcissist, but so much of your energy is directed outwards in inspirational, compassionate and transforming ways. People don't always realize what an enormous hole they'd leave in their wake if they weren't here. Everything and everyone is so interconnected. It's not a mistake or happenstance that you're still here, dude. You have a lot of great work and positive influences to contribute to this spinning blue ball, yet. :-) I'm LOL about question number four. It may have crossed your mind once or twice, hey? ;-P See, now this is where being an 'Owl' comes in handy... ;-) I can just hop up into the closest tree and fade into the canopy. Being small and quiet is *almost* as good as invisibility. :-)

Hey Dave and 67ers,

Went to the Bridge School concert last night. Trent Reznor put on a fantastic set w/ only the piano, a couple stand up basses, a violin and some weird keg-looking drum thing.
It was so dark and beautiful. They announced last night, that starting November 14th iTunes will be selling various performances from the last 20 years at this benefit show. I can't wait to get Trent's songs...
I posted a full recap of his set at the asylum, including pics...here is the link if anyone is interested:

Love,

Posted by: Sue at October 22, 2006 04:59 PM

Sunday 10 question:

You often speak about knowing the difference between Art and Entertainment. What is your definition of each?

We have been talking a lot about this very question in my Eng lit class lately. Specificially in relation to such plays as Glengarry, Glen Ross. I'd be really interested in hearing your thoughts...

Posted by: Ambersonian at October 22, 2006 05:09 PM

Here's another for the Sunday 10: Do you still keep in touch with Pamela Des Barres?

Sue

Posted by: Sue at October 22, 2006 05:14 PM

Dude...it's like a little challenge on your blog today, find a question Dave wants to answer...

I'm listening to you now on SRL talking about your back, I know you don't like massages, cause they turn you on or something, but do you put more credence in orthopedic surgeons ,chiropractors, or the loving touch of a trained professional massage therapist?
love,
jezzi(cause I know someone who knows someone)

Posted by: jezebel at October 22, 2006 05:14 PM

Bryce, you don't have to sound like a douche - YOU ARE A DOUCHE! TPC is not just a band - THEY'RE THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD! They are better than Led Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath (Ozzy Black Sabbath - not Ronnie James Dio Black Sabbath), U2... everybody!

...and not just because I moderate the fan website!

Posted by: six7six7 at October 22, 2006 05:25 PM

Oh yeah Jezzi - now you're talking!

And speaking of massages, Dave here is a question for you...

Male G-Spot: Fact or Fiction?

I for one vote fact, because there's nothing I like better than two fingers up my ass pressing on my prostate right at the moment of climax.

I know Tommy Lee is into it - how about you?

Hey Dave. :-) Yeah, I know... emoticons and LOLs. Sorry, dude, that's my style. That's how I roll. It'd be like clipping my wing feathers if I stopped emoting. (Never mind that I have most people convinced Night Owls are flightless... it's the principle of the thing.) Isn't it written somewhere in my friendship claws... er... *clause* that Owls are permitted a few quirks? ;-) I am sorry to hear you hurt your back, guy. Hope it's nothing serious and that you'll feel better soon. I've whammied (no, that's not a euphemism for anything naughty LOL) mine a few times and it's not fun. Great SRL today--thanks, man. Where else can a person hear classic harmonies such as "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" by Crosby and Stills and then awesome tunes like Rammstein's "Feuer frei" in the same webcast? You're a balm for my eclectic musical soul. And for the record I have *never* worked at 'Hooters.' Why some people think I may have is always a mystery to me. Hoot! Hoot! ;-) Feel better, bro, and peace peeps.

"Do I laugh now?"

Hey Dave,

Sure why not? We're all laughing...

hey anne frank. even tho dave answered your question, i have one for you. what exactly is it about pagan symbolism that you think is anti-semitic? we pagans have no hatred toward the jewish community or any other. "an it harm none, do what thou will." there's much more to the unicursal hexagram than just crowleys interpretation.there is nothing anti-semitic about it at all. your question to dave simply makes no sense whatsoever.

Question 10.5:

Did you hear that Jason Newsted won't be touring with RS:SN? Apparently, he sustained a serious shoulder injury and had surgery that will keep him out of commission up to 9 months. It is on Tommy Lee's website home page.

Please send Tommy Lee Eric's phone number. You could end the night with some Decon...

Dave,
Here's a youtube link to the absolutely beautiful rendition of 'Headspin' Lukas and Gilby performed in Vegas this weekend.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzLuda5BAWQ

'Linda from San Diego', he kissed your ring at the end of the song!

Posted by: Only speaking for me at October 23, 2006 07:57 AM

Wow if that's true about Jason not touring with SuperNova they should just change the name to SuperTrainWreck and cancel the tour.

Nice guitar lick at the end.

The only thing gayer than Lukas Rossi is...well...I guess nothing is gayer than Lukas Rossi.

Posted by: Stop Being Gay at October 23, 2006 08:18 AM

Is that judgement coming from an expert?
Lukas is in no way gay.

Posted by: anon at October 23, 2006 08:25 AM

Nice guitar lick, I agree.
Nice kiss on the ring from Linda too. Vocals and musicality, excellent by the way. Loved it! Great on the guitar too!

"Lukas is in no way gay."

You're gaydar is obviously out of whack. Here is the universal gayness scale taken straight of the Logo network website.

*Note that like the Richter Scale, each level increases by an order of magnitude, meaning that someone who is 7.0 gay is one hundred times gayer than someone who is only 6.0 gay.

---

1.0 - Chuck Norris
2.0 - Brian Birchall
3.0 - The Nuge
4.0 - Terry Bradshaw
5.0 - Mario Van Peeples / Judge Reinhold
6.0 - Dave Navarro
7.0 - TR Knight
8.0 - Rip Taylor
9.0 - Austin Scarlett
10.0 - Lukas Rossi

What an amazing show!

It was the first time I saw Chester Bennington perform with them or at all, for that matter (not a Linkin Park fan), but as Dave said "he killed" Mountain Song (certainly a special treat to hear considering I've been a Jane's fan since '88).

Here's the set list:

Ballroom Blitz - Donovan
Suffragette City - Donovan
She Sells Sancturay - Steve Issacs
Brass In Pocket - Macy Gray
Search and Destroy - Steve Jones
Pretty Vacant - Mark McGrath, Steve Jones
Nuthin' But a Good Time - CC Deville, Mark McGrath
Cat Scratch Fever - Mark McGrath, Stev Stevens
Whole Lotta Love - Chester Bennington, Steve Stevens
Highway to Hell - CC Deville, Chester Bennington
Mountain Song - Chester Bennington
Surrender - Scott Weiland, Steve Stevens
Roadhouse Blues - Scott Weiland, Steve Jones
I Wanna Be Your Dog - everyone

Hang on to Yourself was also on the setlist w/Scott Weiland and Steve Stevens. I don't remember hearing that one (open bar will do that too you), but thought maybe Scott did another Iggy Pop tune or something.

Nonetheless, lots of fun. Now, how about a public show, so I don't have to sell my soul to get into the next one? Actually, I didn't have to do that for this one, thanks to a friend of a very good friend, some travel plans and a very cool wife. But, a show for the fans would be nice.
