Running It Out ~ And More Injuries

Yesterday morning I woke up with some pretty severe back pain. I have no idea how it happened. Maybe I slept wrong? Who knows? Backs are moody little fuckers and sometimes just decide to say, "Hey... We are done homey!" for no reason whatsoever. So, like a genius, I say to myself, "I know... I'll just go 'run it out' at the gym!" Run it out. HAHA. Yeah, that really wasn't the best move. "Maybe if I do more shit to aggravate it, it'll get better!" So, today, I am forced to actually go to the chiropractor and get my shit tweaked. More jumping through hoops to get back to where I should be, much like chasing down a bunch of lost phone numbers. The good news is that once I get back, I will be home all day, so a new Spread Radio Live will be in order. I'll be back to finish this post up later. (Normally, a post about a trip to the chiropractor isn't worth a whole lot, but this picture is so awesome, I just had to.)

Just got home from the chiropractor. Damn, that guy knows what he's doing. A little electronic stimulation, some heat, a little rub down with oil that leads up to a full release of stiffness and tension! Just like seeing a hooker! I have been grounded for the next three days and have a couple of follow up appointments, but I should be fine. I have been down this road many times before. It comes from years of playing guitar, irregular sleeping patterns, stress, gym workouts and that mysterious "X" factor that all backs have. A brace and some ice will have me up and around in no time. Thank God for Netflix and home delivery! Looks like I'll be finishing up that Season Three of The Wire today.

I just received news that Jason Newsted will not be joining Supernova on the upcoming tour. He has apparently sustained a serious shoulder injury and will be out of commission for up to 9 months. That... SUCKS!!! Word on the street is that his bass head fell on him. Jason, I feel your pain... I hope you make a swift recovery. I know from Jerry Cantrell, who had shoulder surgery earlier this year, that it's probably one of the worst things that can happen to a touring bass or guitar player. We wish you well!!!

Hopefully I will be able to catch a live SRL for once. Even though it is under circumstances of you being in pain! Hope you feel better. Loved the CFR, just heard it today at work. Very funny. Take care & take it easy.

That sucks about your back Dave! (running's probably not a good idea.) Yoga's better for that. (The thought of you doing yoga, yum.)

Glad you're around today. You're keeping me from my work, but that's OK! You're a good distraction.

I never thought I would be one of those people but I have to say that I love my Chiropractor. Getting old sucks but at least there are people that can put us back together.

Just wanted to add a comment to your (excellent) answer to the question in the Sunday 10 re: anti-semitism. Part of the problem with jumping on everything and anything to accuse people of saying or doing anti-semitic things is that it makes it more difficult to deal with actual incidents of anti-semitism in the world. Whether it's ignorant complaints about symbols that have broader meanings (e.g., your tattoos) or uninformed assumptions that any critique of the Israeli government is somehow necessarily anti-Jewish -- it has the effect of the "boy crying wolf" and counterproductively defeats the purpose of fighting anti-semitic statements or acts (like attacks on synagogues or racist statements stereotyping Jewish people).

-L

p.s. hope the back feels better.

Back pain sucks. Good luck w/ getting rid of the issue. Skeletal pics are awesome. I recently saw my ankle on my doctors laptop. Sooo cool. He put it on a disk for me to take home!

Be well. Looking forward to SRL later.

Isn't back pain a bitch?! I love the chiropractor...everytime I leave there I feel so much better.

Thanks for answering the Art vs. Entertainment question. You said pretty much the same thing I did. I just went more in depth about learning about ourselves through mimesis, when in the presence of great art. Super hot and smart..what the fuck is goin on!?! haha ;)

Although Im sorry to hear about your back pain, I am happy to know there will be yet another SRL goin into the rotation! Oh and if you're keeping track of opinions...I'd also LOOOOVE it if you would podcast an SRL or two.

Have a great day, Dave and Fam. Love, Amber

L,

Cheers! Well said - we all need to be reminded not to go around making assumptions. For example, I have a tattoo located in the small of my back that reads "Insert dick here" with a small arrow point down. And because of that, people somehow just assume I'm gay!

Drives me nuts.

Dave...your lost cell phone numbers...on your Mac in OSX there's a Apple program called iSync. You can connect it via Bluetooth to your phone and back up all your phone's numbers in Address Book...then in case your phone gets lost, explodes, or is captured by the people at Xiola.org, you can always use your Address Book backup on your new phone without all the drama.

As for your back...I don't think MacOSX has anything for that yet. I'll keep my eyes open.

"Some people are more cut out for one certain existence over another."

That's rather a fatuous statement. Living a 9x5 life doesn't particularly mean that one is cut out for it. Wouldn't it be a great if we each found our own calling, embraced it, and were able to make a living from it.

Determinism or Free Choice?

Dave: Do you sing backup on any of the TPC songs? I checked the liner notes and no one but Steve is listed as doing any vocals, but there are obviously harmonies on the songs. Just curious :-)

Dearest Elise,

"Wouldn't it be a great if we each found our own calling, embraced it, and were able to make a living from it"

Warm. Fuzzy. Naive.

The reality is that unless you like paying $20.00 for a gallon of milk (because nobody like getting up at 4:00 am to milk cows), or $500 a month for water/sewer (because nobody like working in shit), free will is simply not viable.

The truth is that bad life choice on behalf of others is what makes your life and my life as comfortable as it is.

The world needs ditch diggers too...

That's too bad about your back. Take it easy, relax, and feel better soon. I'll cross my fingers. If the pain continues, you can always form a side-group called "Sciatica". I always thought that would be a cool band name, especially when written in that "heavy metal" font, maybe an umlaut or two...

All the best -

Hey, just be careful with those doctors....they're like crack! hahaha. I went for a short time to feel better with running, and I got so used to being adjusted- I would ache until my next adjustment. I went cold turkey - and feel much better for it. It's like when you crack your knuckles (I know, girls shouldn't do that - but I digress..), they ache until you do it! ;)

Determinism or Free Choice?
---------------------------

If you ask me...people CHOOSE to live a 9x5 job. I understand the idea behind determinism, but no matter what, everyone has a choice. There are many people in our world today who are concerned w/ making money and don't care what kind of dehumanizing job they must take, to live the lifestyle they desire. Obviously people have to pay the bills to survive, but I would say that most people attempt to find happiness in a 9x5 life. Now, if they incorporate some creative and artistic components to their lives, then they have a shot of having a fulfilled life. Their brains and souls won't turn to mush after years of typing up the same kind of reports, performing the same kind of surgery, taking the same fast track tickets for bridge toll, washing the same high-rise building windows etc. Sadly, most people won't do that. They will continue to spend all their time and energy chasing the next big deal instead. Then they die, having spent their entire lives trying to attain their idea of a perfect life, ironically not having lived at all.

I feel your pain, Dave. I've been out of work for 2 years now with disc degeneration and 2 bulging discs and a torn one. Ice and heat if it's not feeling better after your chiropractor's visit alternating with 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off will help make the muscles relax enough.

And Dave... never run off back pain, it doesn't like that.

Much love and feel better, babe.

"Now, if they incorporate some creative and artistic components to their lives, then they have a shot of having a fulfilled life."

Amber: I commute 4 hours a day to work an 8 hour job in Minneapolis. The plus is that I can afford to keep my horses, and rescue those that are in imminent danger of going to slaughter. The minus is -- I commute 4 hours a day to work an 8 hour job :-D I couldn't have the horses if I didn't do the commute, but if I didn't have the horses, I wouldn't have to commute.

I choose the commute and the joy of having horses :-))

Dave, go get a massage already!! They probably have a couple of LMTs at your chiropractor's office which then means it might be covered by insurance(not that money is an issue for you but whenever massage can get paid for by a giant insurance agency - that is a wonderful thing).

If you are ever in Portland ME...here is where I work as a massage therapist. It would be on me. :-)

Yes it is. I was being facetious. I think that it's a rather rare thing that, when faced with a gift that takes one outside of the 9x5 realm (an artist let's say), one has the courage to run with it and not end up going with certainty.

Likewise it seems a rather rare thing to have an employable gift/talent that's outside of the 9x5.

Wow. Really too bad about Jason. Sounds like a serious injury...could have fallen on his head...that would have been really bad.

Is there any talk yet of who might replace him in the tour yet?

Here's a question for you:

Do you cook Dave? I just love guys that cook so I wondered if you did?

When do you do most of your writing? Do you keep a private journal for your lyrics? Written anything lately? OK, I have more than one question..do you draw too?

Also, that mashup you played last night (devo\50 cent), did you do that? (loved that BTW)

Monday 10-> I think Jason Newsted was the bassist that "won" the spot in Metallica when Eric auditioned years ago. I know it isn't your band, but wouldn't it kick ass if he could fill in for Jason in RS:SN?

Have you seen this? Eric just started up a blog:

Ah, Dave, did you ever think maybe it is the gods telling you to relax for a couple days??? You need a rest every now and then, son!!!

Q: How often do you see Carmen these days?? Is it still awkward, or are things very easy between you??? I know I have an old boyfriend who is still one of my very best friends, and I hope you and Carmen have that bond also....

That does suck about Jason, but I can't imagine him really wanting to tour with Supernova anyway. They are one of the worst bands I've ever heard. Don't give them Eric A.'s number! Not that he'd play with them anyway.

Do you have any idea how large your SRL audience is when you broadcast?

Hope your back heals quickly,

Caff Sue

Bratty, here's the story on the bats:

http://www.6767.com/archives/2004/08/index.html

2. Any particular reason for bats Dave? I mean I know the PC logo has been commented on as being a bit "goth"... :)

Not really. In fact, when I was getting them done I even commented on how nice it was to be getting some work that didn't "mean" anything. I just thought they looked good. As for the goth thing, well, goth is always good.

Back pain is a bitch. I had fall from a horse and damaged a couple of vertebrate. It's normally fine, then one day, wham (not george michael related) all kinds of pain.

I was going to ask a question, but my sleep deprived brain seems to have forgotten.

Sucks about Jason. Who do you think should replace him? Maybe another budget cut and the bass player from Juke Kartel could do the job.

Since you are likely to be bored today then it's a good time for the nostalgia trip...we're going down memory lane.

1) First album you went out and purchased with your own cash? Albums previously given to you as presents don't count.

2) First concert you ever went to, where at, and how old were you?

For me it was 1) - Kiss "Unmasked" and 2) Midnight Oil at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in 1985 - aged 14 years.

some guitar geek questions here, I am not an everyday visitor so you've probably answered these a couple of times... sorry to be repetative, do you still practice & have you considered taking some advanced theory class from a steve vai-type sicko ? who has been your favorite writing partner / situation ? and the last one, do you hear whole songs in your head or are you a melody only guy ?

whats up dave,
i was wondering if you have ever thought of having an in house studio or anything like that? you know, just in case you get some great idea while you are hanging at home.

Dave,
Wishing you have a fast recovery for your back. Glad to see you are not a stubborn man and actually got it looked at and worked on by the Chiropractor.

I was wondering if we were going to get any newer SRL in rotation?

Take it easy

Dave

"The Crowley design (Unicursal Hexagram) was originally created by The Golden Dawn, who had a deep understanding of Kabbalah."

My husband and I are into Spirituality and have studied the Kabbalah, Ra~Sheeba and Reiki among other things........Guess my question is...Do you study/practice any of these above mentioned realms, Do you meditate??

I know how you feel. I have a target tattoo in the small of my back and for some reason people assume it's for jizz squirting practice.

love Joe

Cheers! Well said - we all need to be reminded not to go around making assumptions. For example, I have a tattoo located in the small of my back that reads "Insert dick here" with a small arrow point down. And because of that, people somehow just assume I'm gay!

Drives me nuts.

Few questions:

1. How long have you been friends with Todd?
2. What does he do professionally that he works 9-5?
3. When did you start SRL and how does rotation work. Do certain dates fall off after so long in rotation?

jesh what the hell are you and Jason doing...lol,

seriously though, hope your back feels better soon and I agree that it sucks that Jason has to pull out.

getting chilly here in NS so make sure SRL is steaming hot!

Hi Dave – do you ever cook? Here is a GREAT soup recipe that is also easy to make. Ok… just have someone else make it for you. It honestly is the best soup -especially for this time of year.

Curried Red Jewel Yam Soup
5# Red Jewel Yams (you can also use sweet potatoes or carrots)
3 qts (96oz) chicken stock
2 cups heavy cream
˝ cup light brown sugar
2 tsp salt - to taste
4 tablespoons Madras Curry (the chef recommends the Meriwanjee Poonjiajee brand – Albertson’s carries it. This is somewhat important.)
3/4 tsp Cardamom
1 1/4 tsp ginger

In a large soup pot, combine yams and chicken stock. Simmer until tender,
and add cream and all of the spices. In a tabletop blender, or a hand held Beurre mixer,
blend all ingredients together until smooth. The soup actually taste better the next day. You can easily ˝ this recipe – which I recommend b/c it makes A LOT of soup.

Enjoy and feel better soon.

A couple of people posted yesterday about Lukas' performance in Vegas, and the fact that he kisses the ring I gave him. Thank you for letting me know. I had some people from rockbands Rossi Posse e-mail me about the video. I have watched it several times, and I cry each time I see it.

A Question...
When TPC first got together you had no goals for fame and recognition etc, but now that you have an awsome album and songs on the radio have your goals changed??? do you want more fame and fortune??

Dave,
sorry your back is aching and hopefully the dr. visit helped, I am glad you posted an update. take it easy. thank you for always thinking of us.
love ya, you're the best.

PS: Tell Marilyn Manson that he followed Judy Blue Eyes on your show.
PPS: Lentil soup is nice sometimes.
PPPS: (don't anyone ask me what that stands for, i don't know): I'm reading Don't Try This at Home and its a powerful statement against drug use and an effective message because it comes from someone so likeable--you.

Evening Dave. :-) *oooww* Sorry that your back is acting up, man. It's good if your chiropractor has started sorting you out though, bro. I've been 'packed home on my shield' like a good Viking a few times... It's mostly been from car accidents--which I find ironic since I don't drive. It's always... *bang* "Oh, crap... there goes another two years of my life." LOL Glad you're going to be alright--get some good rest, dude. Yeah, it's really sad news about poor Jason. :-( I really hope his surgery goes excellently well and he heals quickly. His fans are busy hunting up an address so we can send him some cards and messages. You boys need to take better care of yourselves! I'm going to have a little chat with your Guardian Angels and tell them to knock off those 'holy smoke' breaks. They duck out to light up and you lads wind up in the hospital or at the chiropractor. Enough of that stuff. Good SRL, but please take it easy on yourself, dude, and rest that back. Peace and love, folks.

Hey Dave,

Sorry to hear about your back pain...
Hope you get better soon and rest up well!

Later, this week I'm finally getting on a plane after 11 years.....With all the studying and the voluntary community work that I love doing...I haven't had time to do some travelling ...

Well, have a good afternoon and take care

I just received news that Jason Newsted will not be joining Supernova on the upcoming tour

------

That shit didn't fall on him, he pulled it on top of himself. Jason knows that "band" is complete shit and not doing the tour due to "injury" is an easy out.

I have to laugh at everything regarding this upcoming tour falling apart.

Hey, Dave!
Old veteran of the Back Wars. You're right. The
shaky vertebral column needs very little provocation to kick up! And at the most inopportune moments! Gone are my high heels,
honey--damn, I was like the Imelda Marcos of
my family! Ice and rest are probably the best
way to go. Hated my back brace, but I had to
use that for a while during my early days "up".
Also read a bunch of Civil War accounts--I know
that you like movies. YOu might want to check
out the original Mummy/Boris Karloff..now THAT
was a stiff back!!

Dave, Unfortunately, welcome to the getting older/back suffers club! I had skiing accident and cycling accident this year. I get better and then I'm back at the doctors. I decided to actually listen this time and am doing exactly everything they tell me to do or not. I only hope I can ski this winter. I had to miss a cycling event that I had trained for all year. I have the best RMT(massage therapist)in the whole wide world. I will never leave him. Best wishes and I hope you don't resort to the sport I have now taken up(5 pin bowling) God helps all.
Oh, I almost forgot, I love your response to the questions, you are have a fantastic way with words and honesty.

Back Pain-
Hi Dave, I'm a pianist and can relate...When I wake up cramped, I do the roll-up from Pilates. Works every time. It's one of the first Pilates warm-up exercises done. I just love how you can even do it in your bed, or just right on your floor.

Question for the 10:
Have you read the book AMERICA by Jon Stewart? If so, what did you think of it?

Q: How do you decide what questions make it into your top ten? Seriously, how do you decide which ones are 'worthy' enough!?

Just thought of another one:
Q: Do you read all of our responses or just skim through them?

I rarely post on here & have never asked any sunday (or monday) 10 questions.

Q: Do you watch or like Family Guy!?

Posted by: Jmitchkc at October 23, 2006 08:48 PM

Dave,
For part of the possible 'nother 10.

You have shared your routine, prayer, gym, doing for others etc.

Do you have a specific prayer format or mantra you would be willing to share with others doing similiar in their lives?

Thanks much and so sorry about your back - nothing worse than lumbar pain unless of course you are Jason N - shoulders trump backs :-)

What's the craziest story you have from from being on tour with any of your past bands?

Posted by: Cregger at October 23, 2006 09:14 PM

I'm not even going to read the posts. First, the House Band is gone and etc., Dave reports that his back is hurt (not saying PC is out of the tour yet), and Jason is 9 mos. out with an accidential injury, what's next? I have tickets for the final show in Long Beach. Is this even going to happen as it was sold to us? Really, I was only going to see Dave and PC and the House Band, so 50% of my show is out already out. Supernova is slowly crashing and burning before it even has a chance to take off.

does Dave like Fergie as a performer? you know when I saw her on Letterman or Leno, I thought she would be great paired up with Dave in terms of his guitar and her vocals/dance. I know she is in a group but teaming with Dave for one song would be explosive, they are both very edgy but seem like cool, nice people.

combing a pink rug: hmmm

Posted by: Season at October 23, 2006 10:17 PM

Sorry about the back. A bath of Eucalyptus, Myrrh, and Lavender will do wonders.

As for the combing of a pink flower rug...My Psych101 class taught me that it is best to sleep with one eye open. Combing a pink flower rug is a clear warning sign.

Posted by: Isis at October 23, 2006 10:31 PM

Depends if the pink flower rug had tangles or not.

But what is she doing with a pink flower rug anyway? You let it into the room?

My old room mate hung my teddy by the neck from the light fitting.

It took me a while to get over it.

Oh yeah Dave, hope your back heals up soon.

I was gonna come over for a quickie, but it sounds like you'll be out of *action* for a while.

I give good head though.

I have a question for the "monday 10"...regarding Perez Hilton (yes, again).

I know how you justify supporting his blog, etc but how do you feel about him making fun of celeb's children? Example: Rumer Willis...she just barely turned 18 and for the last year he has compared her to the Elephant Man, Bat Boy, etc. Meaning, he posts her pic next to the Elephant Man and that's the entire post. Being self depricating does not mean he can be as nasty as he wants to others. And the only reason he calls himself ugly/fat/whatever is bc he knows other people are gonna do it and I guess doing it first takes the sting away. I really hope he is in therapy for all of his self esteem issues. Reporting gossip is one thing, being a jerk is another.

In my opinion, there is just no reason for that kind of nastiness...especially about a child. Just wanted to know if u thought this was ok...bc u don't seem like someone who would think it is. There are other bloggers who show their faces and don't get off on being mean to others.

Question summary: Do u think it's ok for someone like Perez to make fun of children or be completely mean-spirited just bc he makes fun of himself?
