Taking It Back
Today I will be doing an all new Spread Radio Live show from my house. I will be talking to Tom Green, who I met last night at the taping for Carson Daly with The Panic Channel. Go check out his site! Tom, as it turns out, is a man after my own heart. He has turned his home into an Internet Television Station and does live broadcasts almost daily, much like the plan I have for the new loft I have purchased. Spread Entertainment Inc. will be moving into the new space in January where we will continue our plans for taking it all back. Tom gets it. We have the greatest tool of communication at our disposal here. It is up to us to decide what it is we see, hear and learn about. As I have said many times before, it feels that the more options we have in terms of outlets (satellite, magazines, radio, television), the less information and entertainment choices are made available. For instance, more people have seen the Lindsay Lohan vagina picture than know about what's going on with the War On Terror. HAHAHAHA... Yeah, that's a bold statement and it may not even be accurate, but in today's climate, it sure appears that way. More people have sent me that picture than have sent me the link to watch the Loose Change video. (The information in that film is up for debate, but I am just citing it as an example.) I know, Lindsay is just random entertainment news and you know I am certainly not hyper-political. The point is, that we now have the ability to control our own avenues of entertainment and information without a corporate slant or filter. Time to use it. Getting back to entertainment, Spread Radio Live will be starting up a new Indie Artist of the Month contest in October. If it feels like there is a shortage of great music coming out these days, it's not because the artistry doesn't exist, it's because the industry has failed to evolve with the times and is now stuck with throwing all their money at whatever they think is a sure thing. If a band doesn't work out financially for a label in a week or two, it gets swept under the rug. The result is that a lot of bands don't even get a chance to be in a position of being swept. Look at OK GO. It wasn't until they did a viral video clip on their own that they got any attention. Good for those guys! Taking it back.

I'd have to agree with everything you've said above, Dave, re: the music industry....there's a TON of talent out there waiting to be discovered by the industry (especially in TO as evident by the past 2 season of rockstar)...but there are so few labels willing to take the risk with new talent....we need more risk takers and trendsetters in the muzak biz who want to expose the world to new artists....enough of the trendfollowers and cookie cutter 'artistes'...thank you (& to Gilby) for taking exactly that kind of risk with offering to work with Dilana....now, is there anything you can do to help Jordis get her music out there?!?!...she is such a talent and i've been waiting to get more music from her...
much love to ya!

Dave - sorry, this is unrelated but I left this message at your Panic Channel store site but don't think any one has been there in a while.
Would love to work on putting a merchandise program together for your Panic Channel store and tour. Check out my website - www.FixateStudios.com. I have over 20 years experience doing this. We've dealt with and know some of the same people in the industry but I'm hesitant to list them in such a public forum. You can probably guess who they are though by looking at my client list. You can reach me through my website if you're interested. Congrats on the band...
Posted by: Mitch at September 15, 2006 12:26 PM
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Dave, ok, the BAND does have the choice of who they want, but to steal money from people (text messages that cost)is a crime and a travesty. Next time, instead of us spending money and time messaging, just have your show, we'll enjoy the entertainment, let the band do what they will (ummm, TL said it's what the fans want. Uh, Ok)and we'll have nothing to bitch about. It'll all come out in the wash, when the CD's hit and tours start, right? I'll watch again next year, probably, but CBS won't get any of my money.....cause my vote really doesn't count, aye? Thanks for turning us on to some great rockers like Dilana, Storm, Magni, Toby and Ryan. I'll be looking for their CD's and tour dates.

ALL HAIL C- THE DARKSIDE WARRIOR, QUEEN T AND THE REST OF THE DARKSIDE!!!!!!!!

GO DAVE - take it fuckin' back! We want fresh meat, not that used up freaky gnome to talk about. Hello again C & Hater it's nice to see the IQ squad in here. I was scared when I saw that ED pill was still around. Come to the DARKSIDE cialis, not the BACKSIDE.
Dave - in case you didn't read the last 1000 posts, the mind police have been busy trying to tell the rest of us how to think.
Posted by: Teresa at September 15, 2006 12:37 PM
Im not sure Lukas was the right one. It sure would have been a refreshing change to see a chick(Dilana) front a kick ass rock band. But I guess he's got what they are looking for, we'll see ya in Phoenix.

Strangely the more I see people here bitching about Dave, the stronger my fandom does grow.
Posted by: MissMaceo at September 15, 2006 12:38 PM
We'll miss you hater! It will be grim but we'll try to carry on in the name of independent thinking and all that's interesting. ALL HAIL THE DARKSIDE!!

Thanx a lot!!!! :)

It's also too bad that a lot of bands don't have many venues to even play live anymore. There used to be tons of clubs in TO where you could see live bands, but now you have to look to find them and it seems like people don't go out to see live music (in clubs) anymore. What's up with that? I really miss the energy and the creativity. I'd love to see something along the lines of a Ministry again.
I think part of the reason that people don't go out is because the sound in most small clubs for live venues sucks.

Tom is funny...the dude cracks me up.
Can't wait to see the computer/internet goodies once you get it all set up in that loft. I think it's going to be kick ass!

Can't wait to hear it if you're going to be doing more of your own stuff next year. SRL has a really great and pretty unique vibe, it's funny, warm and you play the best music. You realise that it is an "almost" political statement Dave don't you.. :) Don't shy away from the word although I guess the connatations get distorted when someone says politics. Standing up against the status quo to bring something raw strong and fresh BACK to the people is kind of political, I think anyway. But fact is it is important what you're doing. I also think people love that you say you're sick of being spoon fed media bullshit and then you actually get on with doing something about it. Have a great weekend. Silky kisses.x.x.x

Dave,
Firstly, great to see you back in the blogging word. You were sorely missed for the... two days (?) that you didn't post. :p I guess that goes to show, we're addicted.
Secondly, YOU are a man after my own heart. Major thanks and huge props for citing OK Go as an example of what can happen when a band believes enough in themselves to take a chance and do things on their own if need be. :) Became a huge fan of theirs recently and they are an excelent example of taking back the entertainment outlets.
Can't wait to see what the new Indie Artist contest brings. The last few I've seen were definately impressive.
Hope you have a good day, and have a great tour!
Much Love,

I am obviously half asleep tonight, sorry. Just if you say you're not "hyper political" does that mean you would agree to being "political" to a degree? I read it as you saying that SRL (and the kick ass project next January) are not political statements and that's why I posted because it sounds like it's a personal act that expresses a political stance. Er, do I need to go back to sleep / shut up. A cup of tea is a good idea I think. zzzz Silky zzzzz'z. What's all the dark side stuff anyway? Does someone need a candle? A light bulb? Batgirl99: to quote you "I think part of the reason that people don't go out is because the sound in most small clubs for live venues sucks.

I also think you're right. But I come from a generation that loved live bands and the problem now is that it used to be cool to drive home drunk. Now (and then really) it's just idiotic. So going to a small venue for a little music doesn't have the same allure. In my humble opinion.

Silky -
Back over the last 1000 posts it has come to our attention that many folks have fallen into two intellectual camps. 1) The free-thinkers, independent, sexy, don't need to kiss ass to be included (aka The Darkside) 2) The ass kissing but licking groveling mass of followers who need to be told what to think. (aka The Backside)
You can smell the backside coming. When it does, be prepared to be told what to think, where to kiss it and just who is important in this world.
Oh yeah, they'll tell you how to raise your kids too.

Great point about the lack of good music. Until the industry stops getting behind shit concepts like Supernova, truly deserving, innovative acts will continue to be overlooked. Great insight.

Too true! There are some excellent bands out there that never get the time of day.
I want to nominate my favourite kiwi band for Indie Artist of the Month. (yes they hail from NZ not Australia)
I went to one of their gigs and these guys fockin' rock!!

There's lots of good music out there, but for sure the industry won't invest in them until they've made their own name or they think they're a sure thing...
A good movie out to see is "Hollywoodland"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427969/
Ben Affleck is once again using his real acting chops... Diane Lane does good as well as Adrien Brody, who is just an awesome actor!!!
Plus a more political movie recommendation "America: From Freedom to Fascism (2006)"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0772153/
and YAHOO!!! SRL Indie Artist of the Month is coming back... I just think that is an awesome aspect of SRL... Let's see if it'll be a 3rd in a row that I like the best that takes the SRL Indie Artist of the Month crown!!!

C - you make me laugh! Good for you getting out and not letting the daughter rule your life! One time I was too drunk to figure out the door knob thingy so I sat on the front step and banged my head against the door until my husband heard me and opened the door. Well you know, what drunk chick fell backwards into her doorway laughing up at her husband?? Yep. Fun times. I don't remember the band that night though. I like it better now I can remember who played LOL!

KUDOS on taking it all back!!! All I have to say is we have this little thing, maybe you have heard of it, its called the 1st Amendment. Countless people have sacrificed their lives to protect that freedom and I believe, you and I and everyone else, should use it to it's fullest potential. Besides anything that let's us hear and see you Dave is O.K. in my book!! Keep up the good work! Got the new CD last week and have 1st Amendment~ed the neighbors to death with it!!! Love ya !!!

Teresa - LOL, yep, been there too!!! Both my husband and I, pre-marriage couldn't figure out the key in the doorknob thingy after a Disturbed show, took at least an hour, in January to get in the house!! Lesson learned: don't get drunk with the band!!! Unfortuneatley, we live in the boonies, on a lake, so we don't get out too much...My last concert was 'Tallica when I was preggers!!! Thankfully, the music was better live then the CD was!!

Looking forward to SRL! You are so right. The lack of choice is pretty disturbing. Stuff is out there, but it is so deeply buried you really have to work to find it. Who has time for that? I wonder if one day people will pull away from the mass market stuff that they are herded into and realize that their minds are completely vacant. Dave, I think it may be too late though. It’s a conspiracy. :)

Dave, you beautiful thing, I love you and want to have your puppies. Well I don't want any more kids so puppies it is.
I couldn't agree with you more about the state of music these days. I have had to retreat more and more to my old cd's; Catherine Wheel, Inspiral Carpets, Tool, Marilyn, Beck, Velvet Underground, New York Dolls, James, and Zeppelin keep me company more and more often. I am so proud of you all. You carry the dark tradition to its fullest extent, and your creativity knows no bounds.
I wish to extend high fives to Teresa, C, justanotherhater, Scott et al, and hope you bear no malice toward myself and Squid for the earlier identity switching swordfight near the end of the last post.
It began with my being "finished" rant, and Squid's "fucking baby" retort... it was a beautiful thing, and only we two know who was who.
Keep up the wonderful work.
A promotion is in order.

Teresa,
Yes, I know its still early for Samhain. The cooler weather always gets me all geared up for it. After a while your body just attunes itself to the energy in the air.
I've always wanted to learn Gaelic but I've heard its a very difficult language to master.
And honestly, I'm not really slamming Christianity. I have plenty of Christian friends. Frankly I dont think ANY religion has a lock on The Truth. We're all either a little right, or we're all wrong. Personally I like to think we've all got parts of the bigger picture down and you really only grok it fully when you die.
But hell, what do I know. I'll just go back to my tree-hugging....
Caught dancing nekkid around a bonfire or two,

Teresa,
Its been cooling off at night here lately but we're still in Air Conditioning Weather. I'm in east Tennessee but try not to hold that against me. I'm originally from Detroit...try not to hold THAT against me either LOL.
Its 81 out right now and gorgeous. We're in for a beautiful weekend for all the crackhead tourists to enjoy. I work in hospitality so at this point of the year I'm totally drained on idiots from out of state who cant drive and generally act like asshats. Yes people, its a Black Bear..we have those here...and nooooo...you cant pet the cute lil cub unless you want Mama Bear to rip your arms off while she's munching on your brains.

I LOVE the idea of Spread Entertainment. It sounds like exactly what the internet should be used for. I would love stuff like that(not necessarily yours) to evolve so you can get musicians in one part of the world who could never afford to, or are restricted from travel playing with musicians from a completely different culture, in real time and available for everyone. If anyone knows of anything like that alrady I'd love to hear about it.

I am also completely mesmorized by the Fergie "London Bridge" video, which is also bad (meaning bad). It's such a train wreck, it sucks me in for the full 3 minutes every time. And then I can't get the song out of my head.

Afternoon Dave. :-) Hope you’ve been having a lovely time and catching up on some rest after the recent end-of-show insanity. LOL A loft? Cool. :-) Awesome, dude—it’s fantastic to have more rockin’ stuff to look forward to in the New Year. :-) I *am* a lot more political than I’ve hinted at, here. I’m Canadian, but anyone who mentions the name of a certain south-of-the-border President in my presence will get an earful, for sure. ;-P I’ve always been involved with peace activism, social justice issues and environmentalism—that’s just me. I’ll keep that (creative stream of expletives ;-) ) for my own blog, though, because you get enough action here as it is. My words and opinions—my heat. :-) That’s only fair. I completely agree with the “500 channels, nothing on sentiment. There are very few TV stations, radio stations or programs that I will invest time or attention in… It says something that several of the ones I *do* have you involved with them in some capacity. LOL I am completely behind artists and entertainers like Tom Green and yourself who are using technology and multimedia forms to reclaim the soul of communication, education, independent artists and social empowerment. Seriously, thank the benevolent powers of your choice that there are people like you in the world doing your thing, because so many human beings are asleep on their feet like docile little sheep and shuffling zombies. Other people are awake but simply don’t have the level of international exposure and public impact that folks like you do. People are so numb from being overexposed to images of violence, suffering and oppression that it’s going to take something extraordinary to shake them awake and keep them moving. It’s difficult to reach people wrapped up in their own lives—it only hits home when people experience and feel things on a personal level. And then they tend to want to forget and move on, again, as soon as possible. I don’t know if there’s any true ‘cure’ for that… But, it never hurts giving people a good shot in the posterior now and again with an impressively large syringe. LOL ;-) Even I need a good boot on occasion and folks like Lukas and yourself have really done that for me, so thank you. :-) This is the most ‘awake’ and spoiling to ‘fight the good fight’ I’ve felt in a long time. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that it’s a lot of fun at the same time, too. LOL I’m always up for a good bout of ‘rabble-rousing.’ ;-) Although, to be sure, folks like you only attract the very best class and quality of ‘rabble.’ *waves and smiles* LOL Definitely peeps after my own heart. :-) Thanks for the SRL webcast—always enjoyable. :-)

Yeah there's a heavily edited video going around designed to make Lukas look bad, but people who were there and saw what went down are starting to come out and refute it. Here's a couple of posts from Rockbanders

...PEOPLE ! The MEDIA that were around the afterparty are not paparazzi.
PAPARAZZI are uninvited free lancers lurking for pictures in un-approved places .
These photogs/journalists were sent there ( many free lance ) to get pictures and any dish that they could serve up.
The PARTICULAR photog/reporter team that captured the video and dish were ( in my opinion ) exactly what they needed to be to get their disgusting job done. RUDE, and PUSHY. They filled in the VERY LARGE gaps...to make their 'story' fit.
I found them to be TRULY DISGUSTING individuals and cussed them out several times that evening....
The writer in question tried to get info from me for over 2 hours, and videotaped me and my fan-friend, but all that I gave him was I'M HERE FOR THE MUSIC....LUKAS....SQUEEE...TOBY...SQUEE....( HAAAAAA...nothing that he wanted for his 'meal of misfortune'! ).
His intention was to get Lukas in a corner to ask inflamatory questions ( which was what he was doing to me ). My actions ( inadvertantly ) helped Lukas escsape from his evil grasp! BOOOYA!
He almost got his ASS run over when he chased Lukas across the street and jumped ON HIS CAB ...pounding on the back trunk as it drove off...

Then read this from ANOTHER person who was there and saw everything.

All right everyone. I can't take all the speculating. I am going to tell you this much. I know for a fact that things did not go down the way they are being portrayed. The video is heavily edited to make Lukas look bad. Some of you may not know me because I don't usually post in this thread. I am telling you as someone who lives in Los Angeles that I know what happened last night but I can't say more tha that.
-------------------------------------------------
That is not the way I saw it. The "what girlfriend" was TMZ's captioning. All Lukas did was stick his tongue out and give a peace sign to the camera.
Enough said. The video is twisted gossip made to be sensational. There will be no harm from it.
*** ANOTHER ITEM of interest ***
When Dave Navarro pulled up he exited his vehicle
and he made a quick Bee Line past the Press into the venue.
.....there WAS NOT a roped off 'PRESS AREA', as in most
events, so the press were 'jockying' for position. Some
( TMZ ) were more gregarious than others.........
When Dave streaked inside ( and I was watching this
very carefully ), he BARELY brushed the shoulder of
one of the cameramen with his left hand.
TWO MINUTES LATER this same cameraman was sitting on the
curb and rubbing his shoulder and contorting his face
as if he was SERIOUSLY hurt....
I'm waiting for the lawsuit so I can testify in Daves behalf....

Dave,
what you posted about your plans with Spread Entertainment Inc. sounds awesome - I'll keep a close watch for updates, can't wait.
By the way, there are plenty good artists left (at least here in Europe, can't really say much about the US) - even Germany is witnessing the return of g'old hard & dirty music as a true craft at the moment. Just been to a concert tonight - small indie venue, but kickass rock, baby, and a whole lot of record sales for the band in question. They even paid for my drinks all night long, because I was taking pictures and they wanted them for their website - I'm not sure if that was a good idea, though, along with the drinks the pictures got more and more askew, haha.
Anyway, if you can't find any cool new bands in the US just say the word - I'll point a couple of truly hothothot artists from Europe your way, they'd surely make great artists of the month ;)
Anyway - keep it all up, love yer work, yaddayadda (no, I mean it!).
Oh, and please get that spread radio live show you're doing later into rotation - 4am European time is a bit late to listen a radio-show even if it's yours and on a friday night, haha.

I can't say I'm a fan of Tom Green, but anything that goes against the corporations for the sake of the people and the free world, is fucking a ok in my book. Hi Dave!
I agree with everything you said. It is awful that so many bands don't get a chance now days just because people are not willing to take a chance on them.
Also, I have another topic for you. I know this is going to be so off topic from what you wrote but maybe not fully. Have you seen the previews for "The Black Dahlia" movie? It is being billed as the "untold story" of 1940's murder victim Elizabeth Short (whose tragic murder was never solved), when infact it is based on a fictional novel that even the author will tell you is fiction. I think it is awful how the media is insulting a dead woman's memory by claiming a fictional movie as a film about her real life just to get more people to see it. What do you think? Have you seen the same previews? If so, do you think maybe you could mention something about it on one of your radio shows? I myself totally understand how someone would make a fictional novel/movie based on Elizabeth Short (who suffered a tragic murder) but to claim it as real just to make bucks? That is just going too far, you know? Just thought it might be an interesting topic for you, not that you need my help because you are doing great on your own. ;)
Rock on.

Im hearin' ya girl! I used to be a tour manager and I fined anyone who asked a 'stupid passenger question' For example: "Can you tell me where the toilets are here?" "Um, I could be wrong, but Im pretty sure they will be in that building we are parked RIGHT NEXT TO that says 'Toilet' on the side of it. That will be 20 deutschmarks, thank you"
They only ever did it once which was a bit of a shame really, because I used to put the fines aside and put them into a bar tab at the end of the tour. The bastards learnt too quickly and there was never enough in the fine jar for all of us to get totally fucked up.
My advice - fine the fuckers, they will soon shut up and engage brain before opening mouths. Better still, encourage them to pat the bears.

Mrs. Meat,
I used to work, ever so briefly, at a place called BlackBear Jamboree. ~shudders at the memory~ Its one of the many retarded dinner theaters in this town that bilk people out of money.
At least once a day I'd get some idiot asking me if there were REAL bears in the show.
Sure, bud. You sit there and enjoy your chicken and rib $34.95 plus tax dinner and just a mere few feet away you'll be entertained by real live dancing bears! I assure its perfectly safe!
Honestly...some people should NOT be allowed to procreate.
NOT from the shallow end of the gene pool,

Hey Dave and to everyone reading.
I'm truly getting fed up of the bashing regarding SN's pick. Let's face it, if he was the one they were looking for in the beginning, let it be. The guy is entertaining to watch.
Regardless if it was Dilana or Lukas (which by the way either would have suited the band and both were my choice from the beginning**LUKAS the favorite) we finally will have something different to listen to then POP and junk HIP HOP on the radio.
Finally a possible stepping stone to the when people actually played their instrument. My biggest regret is not buying the tickets prior to the decision. Now I guess I'll have to sit on the side line. Would have loved to see you perform Dave.
As for the incident outside the club... all I can say is...people get a life and leave his laundry alone...
