Someone Is Going Home
Yeah, I know, last night's show was ... not the most spectacular display of rock we have ever seen. I don't pick the songs they get. Trust me, if I did, you'd know it. As for the whole Storm thing, she could have gone with the Cake version of I Will Survive and chose not to. Sure, it's the same song, but ultimately she opted for a less ironic version which to us, came off as really cheesy. I stand by my comments after seeing it on TV. Whatever, she is not going home today I am sure! My prediction for elimination? Patrice. Even though I don't know what planet Zayra is on, she did take a chance. Actually, on second thought, if it were my call, I'd put together a reel of Zayra's performances and cut her today, but send her with the reel directly to a Latin record label and say, "Here, take her... I don't know what you got here, but it's worth looking at. She's just not right for what WE are doing." Honestly, I might just cut them both right now, but as I always say, it isn't my call. I stay out of that decision making process. Tonight, we hear a Supernova song for the first time, featuring Jason, Tommy and Gilby with a yet to be named contestant having the honors. We finally get a chance to see what it is we are actually trying to do here. Find these guys a singer. Now that we are down to less contestants and the finale is drawing near, it's time to hear and see what this thing could be. I am looking forward to it as I haven't really heard an entire Supernova song with a contestant singing yet myself. I think that once we see what the boys are up to, it'll be much easier to understand the rest of the show, our comments and the choices that our remaining singers make from here on out. Next week, we are back to some more rock oriented music. As for tonight's encore... I'd give it to Ryan, Dilana or Lukas.
P.S. Just to set the record straight, I am currently not dating ANYONE.

I agree with Patrice and Zayra leaving tonight. Neither one is suited to Supernova. I thought Dilana rocked. I hope she sings with thew guys tonight. She seems to be the most consistent. Storm really diappointed me.

Thirteenth!!
Dave! hahaha I agree about Zayra. I did go listen to her on her myspace page and she does sing good. Just not good for SN in any way shape or form or planet for that matter!
Anyhow..Have a greta day!

Thanks for the response to what I am sure were universal questions regarding the "rock' content of Gloria Gaynor...
I totally agree about Zayra, I watch a lot of Latin TV...don't ask...and I see what passes for music videos, her style would even be considered avant garde for them, and I think that there's definitely an audience for her..like Ann Powers suggested, you SHOULD produce her...
as for Ryan...I'm sorry, I didn't see it. I mean, I SAW it, but I didn't understand what everyone was raving about, I actually had to turn back to Gilmore Girls, it was pretty painful, plus, you know, it was the one where Rory moves out, and Luke and Lorelai had just got engaged and...well, you know....
Please send Patrice home, my son even said she looked like a nutty schoolteacher, which was, for those of you that know me, quite ironic...and all this time I thought she was channeling Alanis..
I can't wait for tonight, about time we get to see the boys rock it together! Now, if we could just get YOU up there......that would be (ONe) amazing show!!!
On another note, why has noone ever mentioned here that when you click to preview your post, you are taken to a screen that still has links to Rockstar INXS, and the Vegas Poker thing you did LAST YEAR...am I the only one that spell checks, hahah
love to all,
jezzi(having a private listening party right now)

I *heart* Zayra. Last night was encore worthy.

Good Morning Dave. I think it should be time to say goodbye to Patrice. I watch the show with my daughters and we have seen enough of her!!! We wish you did have a say on who goes, but know you don't. And we also wish you picked the songs as then they would be real rocking. Anyway Dave, again, thanx for the music you do give to your fans. I am loving ONE. Love Left to lose. : )

I couldn't agree with you more, I think Patrice will be going home tonight though I am not sure if they will do another double elimination with Zayra.
I think the Encore should go to Lukas. I love Dilana but she didn't do much with "cats in the cradle'. She sang it great no doubt about that but she didn't even attemtp to make it her own- though I suppose Lukas didn't either..lol.
I just wish Lukas would stop closing his throat up and maybe lay off the alochol a bit (Toby too). Fine if he wants to drink and get hammered but doing that on a 24/7 day a week job interview is not good. Especially when as a Rocker they are going to be thrown into such parties on a regular basis so being able to monitor ones actions is going to be an assest.

Even though Supernova probly isnt going to tour for very long even after they get a singer, and quickly vanish into mid air.......(or even sound catchy) THis is the only show worth watching during the Summer. I have auditioned several vocalists, and it doesnt take this long to tell the ones you dont want that they suck .But I understand this is television not a true ,honest, make rock n roll because you love it and put your heart and soul in it rock band. Its a money machine. Storm really sucked last night Im routing for her, and Dilana, or Ryan. Of course I wouldnt let any of those fuckers front my band (maybe Storm have you seen the videos on youtube.com of her singing Penetration with her band...Damn. Oh well, I guarntee when its all said and done you will not see the name Supernova in Revolver or Blabbermouth.net with positive reviews or any at all, They Suck.As everyone will see tonight when they play onstage.

Dave,
Could you please clarify WHO is responsible for the song selections?
Many thanks for all your comments and responses. Peace.

Dave,as usual you are right.Patrice will be gone tonight i hope.Zayra needs to be on telemundo.Great job to Brooke for giving TPC a little advertisement on the new album, oops i mean cd.Damn you can tell what era i am from.I even thought dilana's comment that she "was the ONe" was directed not to SN but to TPC.Very cool and smart advertising. What the hell,Since you are the ex producer,go for all the good you can.Peace from new mexico
Posted by: chris sandoval at August 16, 2006 06:37 AM
i think Magni is good but too obsessed with his Iceland and that will irritate SN.
Lukas is great but too quiet no personality.
Storm is great but is way too confident & uses the term "spanking" too muvh that she has turned me off...
I can see either Toby/Dilana/Ryan fronting the band...
Posted by: Carolyn at August 16, 2006 06:43 AM
This is getting repetitive and annoying. Every week the SN guys say "mix it up" or "bring the rawwk." But if a singer mixes it up they get smacked if it isn't "what we'd like to see for our band." And if it's "rawwk" they want, WHY NOT GIVE SINGERS EIGHT CHOICES THAT ARE ACTUAL ROCKERS? And if it's "rawwk" they want what's this "stripped down" orchestra bs? What are they hoping to see that might actually translate to something SN might actually play in a concert? Are they planning to dim the lights at some point during the show, give Tommy some bong drums, pull up chairs (which tommy evidently hates, odd for a drummer) and do an acoustic medley of hits from G&R, Metallica and Motley Crue?
Posted by: Michael at August 16, 2006 07:03 AM
Yes, song picks.... why would anyone pick that Gloria Gaynor song for the singers to have to choose...ack. Kinda a waste of airtime. Maybe they thought Zayra would take it..lol... ;)
Posted by: vicki at August 16, 2006 07:04 AM
I'm all for Patrice going too, if Zayra is in the bottom 3 it could go either way. And yeah, what was Storm thinking??! Was that supposed to be a male drag show or?? hrmmpff! But I'm still watching like I have nothing better to do in the middle of the night :-)
On the down side, my trip to the cd store didn't bear fruit (except a Tool dvd and Jabberwocky on sale...) no Panic Channel on this side of the pond yet. thank god for Amazon though!

Time for Zayra to GO! I haven't liked her from day one at least not for SN.. but I admit she is entertaining to say the least, last night was so her element but not right for SN! ACCCKKKK she drives me crazy, get her out of there now ... Ryan on the other hand I didn't care for him in the beginning (granted thats my kids name and it means little king..lol) but lately I have been enjoying watching him he seems to be listening to what they are telling him and changing every week, I look forward to seeing what he will do next!Dilana ...LOVE HER love her raspy voice she rocks! Love your blog Dave.... YOU ROCK!
Posted by: Gina at August 16, 2006 07:10 AM
Why would Zayra sing a spanish song while she's trying out for a rock group? She did well, but she's surely not the brightest! Yes, do a double axing and send her and Patrice home! When is the finale?
Posted by: Caren at August 16, 2006 07:20 AM
Well last was ok but the rockers that stood out more Dilana,Lukas, and Ryan i actually see one of them be in with Supernova. Great performance on all 3 its hard to choose. But as for the other rockers lets see Toby was good that song actually suited him. As for Magni it was good always has a good voice. Zayra and Patrice well what can i say it's time to go. Zayra would be better signing in latin rock maybe? Patrice well she looks like she is losing confidence in her self everytime she goes on stage i have yet seen her woo me. Storm well not good at all. I loved it when Tommy said he wanted his money back so funny the look on her face so awsome. Dave just bought the album LOVED it! It's great.
Posted by: junior at August 16, 2006 07:20 AM
Zayra's accent is too thick to sing American music. She sings beautifully when you can't understand what she's saying.
Dilana is very good, and I love her look. She's beautiful and it's nice to see her gaining some confidance.
Magni I think is awesome, he's the most vocally talented, in my opinion. His version of Live was probably the best performance of the season.
I HATE HATE HATE Lucas. He sounds like he's got a woodpecker in his throat and he's really straining to get the words out. He also needs to learn to annunciate.
Storm is entertaining. She's got a great voice, but I think she'd fare better as a solo artist.
Ryan is hard to watch, and I always fast forward thru his performances because usually he's butchering songs I really like. Last night was painful. What was he doing with a wig glued to his hoodie a few weeks ago? He also needs to learn how to pronounce words while he's singing and choose a pitch for a song and stick with it.
Patrice reminds me of Sheryl Crow gone rotten. I can't stand the way she sings, and even the way she looks irks me. Eliminate her already!
Toby is gorgeous, and I think he's a pretty good singer, one of 2 or 3 people on that show I think I could stand to listen to for an hour. However, I am not sure if his sound is right for this band.
Posted by: Christina at August 16, 2006 07:21 AM
I heart Patrice, but not for this band. BTW, the editing blows - I would rzther have less distortion of what happened dutriong the week and less pigeonholing the contestants in favor of more song time and better song selection. This isn't Big Brother or survivor.
Thanks for the insight, and for offering a reasonably unvarnished look into what you're thinking. This show totally kicks AI'
s arse.
Posted by: zippy at August 16, 2006 07:21 AM
Ouch, last night had the most painful moments, lucky the Teen USA pageant was on to flip back & forth to & TPC "ONe" in my CD player to crank up. Zayra needs to go, unless the Supernova CD will be found in the Latin section. This is definite self promotion with NO ROCK! If it wasn't for her TX friends Blue October promoting her voting, she would be in the bottom 3 every week. She has talent, but no way, rock talent & it painfully shows each week.
Still don't know why you & Tommy weren't allowed to show your ink, it was a stripped down performance after all!
The Panic Channel rules!
Posted by: Artie at August 16, 2006 07:24 AM
Dave, I agree. Last nights show was weak. Nobody really stood out from last nights show. In fact, it made many of the contestant seem week.....oh well, hopefully tonight will be better.
Posted by: Lyle at August 16, 2006 07:28 AM
I think it's pretty clever to take a non-rock tune and see what the contestants can do with it. And it's not like Storm really had to do her own arrangement. If she'd done the Cake version, it would have been infinitely better and much less work on her part. I'm glad you mentioned Marty, Dave. During the Webisode, I kept thinking that if he could kill a Britney Spears tune on a rock show, Storm could have done better with her tune. Plus, she chose it.
I thought Ryan really nailed it last night, as did Lukas and Dilana, although I don't think Dilana was better than the guys. I hope the encore is either Ryan or Lukas, because both deserve it.
Last night was the first time that I understood why anyone would think Zayra was talented. Her song was beautiful, she sang with emotion, and her voice sounded lovely. Wrong for SN, but lovely. She could have a huge career in the Latin genre.
Patrice should go home tonight. Just my opinion.

Goodmorning Dave!
Still listening to ONe - over and over....
How about Toby's naked romp making it to video clips of the week. It was on MSN - but was it aired on conventional TV?
Has the TPC tour for fall been set yet.....
Always,

A contestant is to front Supernova tonight.
Singing the lyrics they wrote?
that kind of kills golden girl (Dilana) doesn't it.
Having her sing that horrid thing she wrote
would just about make you piss yourself laughing.
The more I think about it the more I want to see it.
(oh man I hope she does the over the hip lotion thong rub thing)
Not really hating on Dilana I just don’t feel her anymore.
And if you close your eyes when she’s singing, who would listen to that for more than one or two songs?
(geesh I’m an ass today)
Peace

Hey Dave,
How sweet would it be if the Panic Channel showed up on elimination night, rocked the (Tea)house, and showed these kids what rockstars are supposed look and sound like? Know any of the show's producers that can make that happen?
Posted by: Joe at August 16, 2006 07:38 AM
Hi Dave, Love the show no matter what happens. You're so cool to watch (eye candy) and listen to. Have you been or are you ever going to be in movies?

Posted by: Lolita at August 16, 2006 07:55 AM
Dave,
I watched the show, and I have to disagree with I thought Dilana was okay, for me she over-sang that song. Also, she messed the song up a little towards the end. Also, the last line before the last chorus is suppose to be sad, not happy!
Personally I thought Ryan & Toby were better. Although Magni should be the one to sing with Supernova.
On another note, Panic Channel sounds great!

was it just me? am i the only one that thinks Storm really was doing more of a Cake version?
the bass line was cake (not gaynor) the guitar solo definitely was the Cake version.
Even the vocal melody and inflection was more Cake.
Not to be a cheese, but i've played in cover bands and i've played the gaynor 'survive' more than i care to - and that wasn't it. I think she was trying to take the Cake version and kinda make it her own - by actually singing instead of talking the lyrics. That and the fact it's a woman's voice (vs. cake man) made it more reminiscent of the original Gaynor version.
Just my opinion.

Good Morning Sexies~
I know it's not rock or the vibe we need but Zayra's song was beautiful!!! Her voice and the way she sang in spanish would be something I would totally listen to...I thought she was brave and did the best she has done so far!!!
Storm...ewwwweeeeee...I gagged(?) so hard I thought I was gonna loose my dinner...she really made my ears bleed. Toby sounded good but too much like a little boy...me and my girlfriend had fun with his song though...we started jumping on the bed and dancing all while laughing our asses off!!! Dilana and Lukas no brainer...Magni is good but boring but he's still a cool kat and Patrice totally new her head was in the guillitine!!!
How did you spend your (ONe) incredible day yesterday??? It felt fabulous for me to listen to your music and be apart of something so magical!!!
Lastly, You were looking damn delicious when you peeled your jacket off last night!!!
Kisses~

Alas, I must be getting old. I enjoyed the calmer show last night. To me, it's the only way to truly hear the voices and separate the real talent from the "just for show."
The difference in Zayra's voice was unbelievable. It's almost as if she doesn't understand how singing is supposed to sound in English. The emotion and feeling came through even though I couldn't understand a single word. The quality of her voice was beautiful and it was almost like a totally different person was singing than what she's sounded like throughout the competition.
I loved Magni's performance. His voice rose strong and pure over the music. I totally enjoyed it.
Patrice. What can I say? Her voice grates on me, her stage presence annoys me. She has zero charisma and brings zero excitement to her performance. It's not even good karaoke.
To me Lukas' performance sounded like a bad caricature of the song. Whatever all the raving is about, I am missing it.
I think Storm has the most beautiful voice in the competition, and I think is the front-runner to go all the way. But, This was a confusing performance for me. When she started out I thought she was going to do a fantastic job, then it took some kind of horribly wrong turn, then at the end there was one absolutely gorgeous note. She missed a great opportunity to take a cheesy song and make it a memorable moment on this show.
The music sounded wonderful on Toby's song. Gilby worked miracles on that guitar and Toby playing the bongos was (in the words of my girls) HAWT. His vocals seemed to pale in comparison with the music, they just kind of faded away.
I'd been nervous about Ryan singing this song since I read the spoiler. It holds a special place in my mind. I'll never forget the awe we felt during that first Miami Vice when this song came on in the season premiere. It was one of those goose bump moments you never forget. BUT, Ryan was astounding. He did everything perfect, his performance was without a doubt, far and away the best of the night.
I have always Cat's in the Cradle, even though it sometimes stirs up negative flashbacks of sweaty ole' Harry. (I went to a Chapin concert many moons ago and stood in line to get his autograph. He stunned me by grabbing me and kissing me full on the mouth. Not a peck, mind you, a full on, open mouthed KISS) He was sweaty, gross and more than a little sleazy. *shiver*)
I did not enjoy Dilana's performance. I have no idea what you and the band heard, Dave. To me she was singing it too low and raspy. (Why don’t you ever mention the damage smoking does to a person’s voice box?) Also, it bothers me when they don't change up the lyrics to match the gender of the person singing it, leaving "dad" in was more distracting than changing it to "mom" would have been. She messed up the lyrics royally too. Her voice just doesn't hold a candle to Storms’; neither does her appeal or stage presence.
I think Patrice's time is drawing nigh.
Posted by: Debbie at August 16, 2006 08:11 AM
Just a thought on song selections….does Rockstar have to pay a record label fee or something in order for the contestants to play these songs? Might be a reason why the song selections have been repetitious and some, horrible!
Posted by: dee at August 16, 2006 08:15 AM
I agree with everything Dave said except I don't see Ryan as a Final Three member.
Zayra was able to show us she actually CAN sing, but just not in the rock genre. If nothing else, this has given her fantastic exposure.
Patrice has to go. She's good, but just not good enough. The plan is to be outstanding.
Posted by: Fiona HV at August 16, 2006 08:22 AM
Too bad about the censors last night - I would have loved to have seen you and Tommy "stripped down" while giving your comments!
I agree with some of the other comments that SN isn't likely to last but the show is great! What bothers me is your obsession with Dilana. She can sing, but it is very limited. I cannot imagine listening to that raspy voice for an entire album or show. Magni and Ryan have tremendous voices, but can either really rock in front of Tommy on the drums? Lukas probably can – and he has shown himself to be versatile. I cannot wait to hear Magni, Ryan and Lukas with SN. I also like Storm. Her performance last night grew on me.
Posted by: Amy at August 16, 2006 08:25 AM
I was disappointed that Dilana screwed up some of the lyrics last night. However, I still think she nailed it!! From the first time I saw her perform "Lithium" I have felt that she is right for this band. She has such an incredible presence on stage. I wouldn't pay to see any of the other performers (maybe Zayra--out of curiosity), but I'd pay to see Dilana over and over again.
Posted by: Chris at August 16, 2006 08:33 AM
Hey, Dave,
I love this site and read it every morning.
Speaking of the censors, what was the objection to you and Tommy taking your shirts off last night? I saw that Lucas had his arm taped. On another site someone mentioned that he has a Playboy bunny and that he had to cover it because it is a logo.
I'd love to read your thoughts on this.
Posted by: LuvToLaf at August 16, 2006 08:33 AM
Hi everyone!
First, congrats again on the CD. I should be getting it any second now in the mail. I cannot wait to slap that bad boy in my car CD player and crank it up while I'm driving... Hearing music on a computer is great, but it's a whole other thing when it's in a different context. So psyched!!
As for RS, everyone was good last night. There wasn't one bad performance. A few "blah" ones (e.g. Patrice), but nothing bad.
This time, the standouts for me were Zayra and Lukas. Dilana was great too, of course. Zayra has a lot of talent and potential, and can really sing beautifully when she puts her mind to it and isn't trying too hard to be flat-out-weird. Lukas... he was great! You could see that he was really into it and enjoying himself up there, which made it fun to watch. I don't know what Tommy and Jason were talking about with their criticisms... I think they were grasping for *something* to say...
As for Storm, I didn't think it was HORRIBLE. But I too disliked the arrangement - it was way too wimpy and "girly-girl" for such an anthem. (Incidentally, I didn't know that there is a Cake version of "I Will Survive"... gonna have to check that out... Cake is pretty cool.)
Tonight should be a very interesting ep. I'm looking forward to hearing an actual SN song.
Hope all is well. Have a good one, all!
Love,

I don’t know what Storm was thinking, but the song selection thing sucks as well. After reading some of the comments, I’m surprised at what people have to say about Dilana. For me, her performance gave me chills and stirred up emotions like the song should do. Storm should be in the bottom three, but shouldn’t go home. Personally, I hope Patrice and Zayra land in the bottom and are both sent home. Zayra taking the risk doen’t matter if the fucking shoe doesn’t fit, and lets face it, she is wrong for this band on so many levels!
Posted by: sexygiest at August 16, 2006 08:41 AM
Okay, I hate to keep whining about this. I didn't love what Storm did with the song, BUT if she'd done the CAKE version, would they have been all up in her about not changing it up? Doing it note for note, like they did with Patrice . . . who actually DID veer from the melody a little. (I don't even like Patrice, but she needed to be defended a little there) Cat-in-Heat Dilana did CITC almost note for note (except for the ironically inappropriate "Yeah" after "My boy was just like me"), and you guys creamed all over yourselves. She even fucked up some of the lyrics. Get your pat comments straight and use them CONSISTENTLY. And stop laying favorites. You could at least PRETEND to listen objectively!
Posted by: Pissed at August 16, 2006 08:42 AM
Carolyn, I agree with your comments completely. It seems that SN aren't the ones making the song selections or the show format, but if that's the case, then they really aren't being fair in their comments to the contestants about bringing the rock and mixing it up.
My other concern is this- we all know these SN guys so well, that to me, the show has been almost like watching a pot of water come to a boil. We have known since the second episode that there are only 3-4 real contenders that could actually pull it off with these guys.
I'd love to see another season of RS, with INXS for me anyway, I was learning about INXS as the show went along, so it held more of a sense of anticipation for me. While I love seeing the guys of SN everyweek, like I said before I think I know them so well that I could have picked their singer during week 2.

Hey Dave -
Thought you should know - they did not have your new freakin record at Tower on Sunset at 1pm yesterday... WTF?
Peace out. And thanks for the best show EVER.
Posted by: Adam at August 16, 2006 08:48 AM
Dave seriously how can you give Dilana the encore when she messed up the lyrics, Man in the moon man, on the moon Neil Armstrong. And it is a serious song and she is prancing around on stage, she is a one trick pony everything is the same and guys never call her on it. I would not watch her for 2 minutes let alone 2 hours, she seems more faux rock to me then Dana.
Posted by: lukasfan at August 16, 2006 09:03 AM
I was slightly disappointed last night with Dilana's performance. She didn't show much range with her voice and I also noticed when she messed up the lyrics.
I really don't get the whole Lucas thing. It is true he probably has the most "rockstar" attitude of any of them, but his voice does nothing for me. Just because you are cocky it doesn't mean you have what it takes.
I can't stand Patrice. She is awful. Enough said.
I am starting to wonder if any of them are really suited for SN. I wonder if that has crossed the minds of the guys as well. Most of the contestants have good qualities about their stage presence or vocal ability but none of them really seem to be the perfect fit. Maybe we will see that more clearly tonight when one gets to perform with SN.
Honestly, I watch the show for Dave, that's it. Gilby is to whiny, Jason is to full of himself and Tommy, well he is just Tommy. Don't get me wrong I enjoy their music but this is not rocket science. Like it has been posted before SN will probably fade with time.
On a different note, the CD is unbelievable! I can't wait to see if TPC will be coming to my town!
Kisses to all..........

Yes, not the most spectacular. Best performance of the night - violins on the Collins' tune. So glad this wasn't the first episode I watched...might have been the last. Lukas is stil my favorite. Although, from the first night, I have had difficulty getting past his appearance. He looks sort of like the love child of Robert the Troll from Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, and I never really saw Robert fronting a band. Being very shallow, I started to walk out of the room when he first performed...but I sat back down when he started to sing. Hope a stylist gets to him soon. Maybe you can put a bug in his ear about all the hair....I think maybe it accentuates the problem.
Really enjoy the show and the blog.

Dave, I have to say that last night was a waste of time for the viewers as well as the performers. I mean this is supposed to be a powerhouse rock band and you guys are making people sing "I Will Survive"??? Besides being cruel and unusual punishment for the audience, its a pretty unfair thing to do to the performers as well. I mean c'mon!!! Is Supernova EVER gonna play a Gloria Gaynor song on stage??!! Pointless and stupid exercise and you're gonna lose TV viewers by turning this show into American Idol. I saw your earlier post that you don't pick the songs but you MUST have input and influence on this. Beyond all this, it actually makes me lose "rock respect" for you, Gilby, Tommy and Jason to see you put up with the kind of crap the producers are putting out and forcing everyone to deal with. This needs to be "Headbanger's Ball", not American Idol. PLEASE force a change of song choices!!!

Congrats on the new CD, Dave!
I hope that Patrice and Zayra go--soon.
Ryan does nothing for me. I can't even remember what he sang last night....
THANK YOU for the shout-out and props to the marvelous MR. MARTY CASEY last night!!!
Please, please have him AND Lovehammers play on this show before it ends, and please let them play something butt-kicking like "Straight As An Arrow", not just "Trees". The world needs to see this band in action, since their record label doesn't seem to be doing anything to promote them. (WTF is up with that??? Whenever I street-team for them, people ALWAYS say, "I love Marty, but I didn't know he had a band and they have a CD out!" Then they snatch up the flyers and stuff eagerly, and say they will go buy the CD. Now, when a label has a guy that got MILLIONS of votes worldwide, you'd think they would want to at least let all those voters know that the dude and his band have a CD out!)
See ya on the tube tonight!

Zayra should have gone home long ago. On many of her performances, she shoulds like cats screaming! Patrice just isn't strong enough and would get lost trying to front the guys. Storm's performance last night was disappointing, but she is still very good. Agree with some of the comments about Dilana and missing the lyrics last night. I believe she might be trying too hard to force the issue. I don't think the boys will take kindly to that. Lukas is still the best for me. I like his voice, his attitude and his looks. Some believe it is just a show, but he seems to be comfortable in his own skin which is very important. Looking forward to seeing someone perform with SN tonight. Ryan continues to improve, show range and that he can change things up. Could bode well for him.
Posted by: TB at August 16, 2006 09:28 AM
Last night was disappointing. Fire the one who is responsible for the song selection process.
He/she sucks! SN keeps on pointing out that song selection is important...
Posted by: Jay at August 16, 2006 09:38 AM
Is there any way to pump up the song selections for SN?? Enough of Nirvana, David Bowie and the Who!!!! How about some Godsmack, Korn or heck, even some Metallica and Motley Crue!! This is an audition for a ROCK band right?! Why not let them sing rock songs? Just a thought!! I look forward to watching the shows each week, but I must say, I'm losing interest...sorry!

I loved when you and Tommy stripped down, sad you had to get dressed again ( :
I liked the comment Dilana made that she was the (ONe), I don't know if she was intentionally making a TPC reference...but it was cool either way. When she said it though I thought doesn't she know Lyn is the (ONe), wtf? haha (: I like Lukas though, he continues to grow on me.
Posted by: blacklace at August 16, 2006 09:55 AM
have people thought that this is a reality show, with a "drama" element included..
maybe the producers are putting some crappy songs amongst the mix to try and provoke the "rockers" to fight more for the songs they want - or i guess in this case more the songs they don't want.
also, if a song like "i will survive" pops up, maybe they're looking to see what the "rockers" can do with the song - much like marty with the britney spears song last year.
just my unasked for thoughts.

Dave
Glad to read that you see potential in Zayra,i personally agree that she is probably not right for SN,but fukkit, she is the most exiting performer out of those lot.

"Debbie, Are you the same Debbie who posted as debbiedoo on TVguide.com?

That would be me, unless there's another Debbie that got slobbered on by Harry Chapin and stealing my best lines! Why?
Posted by: Debbie at August 16, 2006 10:05 AM
Dilana's comment was directed to Supernova. As a follow up to her comments to them on the webisode. I guess you have to give her some props for letting them know she has enough ooomph to front them.
As for tonight = double elimination = Patrice (don't fit) Zayra (don't fit)!!!

The producers of Rock Star have to obtain permission from the Artist and Record Label before they can use their copywritten material in a Commercial venture. That's why the contestants have to pick their bottom three songs ahead of time so the producer's can get permission.
You can perform a song in a live club set without permission unless you record the session and attempt to market it in anyway.
Dave should be able to explain this concept in detail since Camp Freddy performs cover songs exclusively.
So the producers of Rock Star are limited in choices by the availability of copywritten material. They have to pay to play.

Also, I thought it was really cool that Zayra got to sing in Spanish so that when she does go (this or next week), she leaves on a high not and having been given a chance to really show what she's got. That was just too cool of ya all (whoever made it happen)!!!
Posted by: Savvy at August 16, 2006 10:19 AM
Dilana completely screwed up the lyrics to her song. What was the high stepping thing she was doing..... no encore
Ryan sounded like adam sandler and what is with the look of dispair. Absolutely has no stage presence and looks like he cant wait to get off the stage.
LUKAS WAS AWESOME ~~~ ENCORE
Lukas is mesmerizing to watch & his vocals were great last night.... love how the lefty plays the guitar upside down : )
Posted by: shaina at August 16, 2006 10:19 AM
Patrice's time is up. I liked her before this show started. Rockstar is not the show for her and Supernova is not the band. Plus she smiles Way Too Much when she sings. Girl needs to snarl once in a way this is ROCK.
Zayra's sang a beautiful original non-Supernova song...I wouldn't mind hearing it again, that is not to say she should stay any longer than one more show.
I finally liked Lukas enough to give him a vote. I wouldn't mind seeing to the encore.
Magni was more of the same, except this time he wore a nice suit.
I did not hate Storm's performance. Maybe because I listened to the webisode and heard her when she was really bad.
Toby had a good ending. I agree with the comment about the music being much better than the vocals.
Ryan is so intense - and I love it. He would be my second encore.
Dilana performed at the same level as she always does. Although, she did not give me any goosebumps.
BTW caught the end of your song on the Tonight show. Good to see you rockin'.
Posted by: Lynne at August 16, 2006 10:25 AM
Have any of you noticed that those that love Lukas absolutely HATE Dilana? I don't notice the same from Dilana fans :-) Methinks they know what a huge threat she is and they're trying to disparage her whenever they can, no matter how ridiculous it sounds.
I also noticed that Dilana goofed up the words. I was waiting for DN/SN to call her on it; when they didn't, I wondered if they'd ever heard the song in its entirety before and didn't know what the words were :-D (it's not "their" kind of music, after all.)
I also loved Zayra last night, no matter that I couldn't understand a word she sang. Obviously not right for SN, but now I understand how vocally she made it to the show.
Patrice? Time to go. (I have to say I was thrilled that I didn't have to watch "drag queen" Jill sing again. She's in the wrong business...can you say "escort service?" Somewhere she can put that grinding to good use.)

Sorry, but I thought you guys were way off base last night. If you only want to hear heavy metal or rock-n-roll, then stop making these contestants sing songs that don't fit in that category. And also, stop telling them, when they do sing metal/rock, that you want them to "change it up" and show more versatility. You were totally wrong on Storm's performance. She should have been given credit for 1)having to sing that song (even though it's not Supernova's "style") 2)giving it a unique arrangement (something you've continually encouraged)and 3)she's got a great voice and demonstrated the best dynamics of the night.
Secondly, the version of Salisbury Hill sucked and I couldn't believe you called it the best of the night (even though you also called the next two the bests of the night). The arrangement wasn't unique or individualized, the singing was way too fast and we could barely hear Gilbey's guitar.
Obviously, no one can sing "I will survive" better than Gloria Gaynor, whether you like the song or not, and no one can sing Salisbury Hill better than Peter Gabriel, but Storm's "version" at least showed the girl has great pipes and versatility, whereas Josh's? version was both boring, frenetic, and showed nothing of his vocal ability.
Sorry, but you guys need to go back and review both performances, this time with some emphasis on their voices, not the songs that you or your producers continue to make them sing.

So Dilana now keeps telling everyone how
good she is with her "lotion and her thong" and that she's the one.....
.....Hmmmm, sounds very familiar, because that
walking punchline David Hasselhoff talks
about himself the same way as Dilana does!!HAHA.

You know, I hope Dilana gets that encore tonight and sings her "lotion thong song" with SN - only because I really, really, really need a gut busting laugh after last nights zzzzzzzzz show.
So what's next on RS:SN- maybe a night at the Opera, with Luciano Pavarotti song selections, or maybe a yoddeling competition to see who can yodel the most like a Rockstar !

First, congrats Dave and to TPC on the ONe release and look forward to seeing (Canadian dates on?) the Fall tour schedule. Is there any possibility that TPC will tour with SN early next year? ;)
About last night...although I agree that Dilana didn't bring anything extraordinary or magical to Cats in the Cradle, I think what stood out as bringing her above and beyond the others was her interaction with the house band (which is consistent for her anyway)and especially the strings guests. No one else even acknowledged them nevermind highlighted their performance (that I noticed).
While it's defintiely the job of the frontman to be the primary focus on stage, a good leader knows when/how to share the spotlight with the rest of the band to boost the overall performance - with confidence and without losing the audience's primary focus. That will be a crucial quality for SN's singer both from a band chemistry perspective and audience perspective.
I think Dilana has more of that quality in her little finger that the other singers combined.
Vibes,
Kim

Storm...you know, she's really hot, and she's got a great voice, but there's this insincerity about her that's really off-putting. Same thing with Lukas (except he's not at all hot.) Those contrived performances are just irritating. I wouldn't pay to see either one of them perform.
I still love Dilana, but that was her worst performance ever. Lousy grip on the lyrics, and she didn't have the strength in the low register that she usually does.
Zayra sounds half good when she's singing in a language she actually has a decent grasp of...who knew?

What does it matter, anymore? It's not a "band" (per se), but at least Supernova kept you on TV until Panic Channel dropped. Can't we just call it a day on this farce of an audition and send everybody home, let Tommy have a crack at the girls, and get on with our lives? As long as Zayra continues to caterwaul on my screen and your unbecoming grudge-remarks about Patrice continue to flow, this is not and has never been a contest about musicianship or talent. It's been a fashion show, as well as a Panic Channel publicity vehicle. What happens with "Supernova" after the Joint on New Year's? Not much, I suspect.
Dave, I've bought your recordings in all forms, and I've gone to as many of your shows as I could in my area, but this has really opened my eyes about the continuing hypocrisy of my former indy heroes living long enough to join forces with the giant corporations in order to join the establishment machine and make more money for themselves. When I can write to the majority of my favorite former rockers @clearchannel.com, I give up. I'd always hoped you'd remain more true to the rock 'n roll ideals you inspired in millions of fans. I get it, though. Ideals don't buy fancy silk shirts with no buttons.

Please, please let Dilana sing her Thong song 2006 I want to see SN do that with a straight face and then have Dave et all tell her how great she is. Bad lyrics, awkward choirs and sloppy bridge that did not fit the flow of the song, and she had the worst cadence. I liked Lukas and Patrice originals the best, Patrice is the one that stuck in my head the longest, and Ryan had the best cadence. Lukas had the most modern take on the bed track and his bridge was great. I could do with out the Whoo Hoos.

Breakfast In Central Park
performed by Dilana Smith
music & lyrics: Jan Koster
This is, admittedly, an entirely subjective assessment:
Breakfast In Central Park is the worst rock song ever written.
I discovered this in Amsterdam. Like most epiphanies which come to you while in Amsterdam, this should be taken with a grain of salt, but I am utterly convinced that this is absolute fact.
In dubious support of my theory, I hereby present the relevant excerpt, verbatim, from my travel diary:
I've heard the worst rock song ever written: "Breakfast in Central Park" by Dilana Smith. Screamingly bad. Wow.
See? Incontrovertable truth.
I discovered this while standing in a french fry stall. See, the thing about all the snack stands in Amsterdam is that they all have a little TV up in the corner by the ceiling which shows music videos. So you can stand there, stoned, eating your fries, and absorb the horror. The only reason I know the performer's name is that the song is so bad I felt compelled to watch the entire video.
Musically, the song reflects the worst clichés of modern rock. The chorus is somehow reminiscent of the "Kingman, Barstow, San Bernadino" section of Route 66. Lyrically...well, here are the lyrics:
All the nightbirds gather on Houston & Bleecker
Celluar phones, pagers & beepers
They go yeah, life's a party you know
So bring your dry martinis your Liz Claiborne specs
Your Dolce & Gabbana your buds & your Becks
And go yea, lets's get this show on the road
So go up to 57th to Central Park West
Put on your skates & a see-through dress
Like a Village reject with Manhattan class
Now get out of the powder room girl
And show me some New York ass!
Breakfast in Central Park
Loungin' in the sun be cool just smile
Breakfast in Central Park
Sidewalk, catwalk, bohemian style
Breakfast in Central Park
Get a little rollin' stoned
Now they got red, white, blue, green & yellow wigs
Pavarotti, chili peppers all in the mix
They go yea, Lauren Hill's queen of club
So take the 5 to 57th to Central Park South
Get on your boards and let it all hang out
Like a SoHo hippie with a lot of cloud
Wipe the mace off your face boy
And gimme some New York mouth
So take the 5 to 57th to Central Park South
Just like the 4th of July let it all hang out
Is it Jersey smog or jamaican cloud?
Baby take a wild, wild guess
Ain't nothin' like a jumpin' jack flash
Oh it's gotta be New York it must be that New York grass!

DIL CANT EVEN WRITE HER OWN BAD SONG
_________________________________________________________
So the Dilana songwriting thing is getting interesting. And not in a good way.
You know Dilana's awful "original" Thong Song on the Supernova bedtrack sounds just like her old song Breakfast in Central Park?
http://www.redbullet.nl/public/media/breakfast.htm
Turns out Dilana didn't write the Breakfast song. A guy named Jan Koster did. Her label put them together, and he wrote 4 songs for her.
Sooo. She can't write, and she lifts from other people's work to make up for it. Seriously Dave, Supernova don't need this kind of ****!
Here's the lyrics and writing credit for "Breakfast".
http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1097674
She changed the location from Central Park to the mansion in LA. So instead of "Bring your lotion and your thong" it's "Bring your martinis and your Liz Claiborne specs". Um, LOL! She should have picked a GOOD song to plagiarize!

Dilana? Why would you give it to Dilana? They've talked about this over at the TWoP boards - Dilana sucked any emotion completely out of the song. Adding YEAH YEAAAAH and COME ONNN! ruins the feel of the song. I said it over there, too: the song has so much emotion that any decent performer could channel, and she left me feeling cold after a song that makes me cry every time I hear it. What was with the witch-hooker-strut or the conducting the orchestra? So out of place for the song, and I think SN (and you) need to stop kissing her ass.

Dave ... I love Panic Channel's new album. It's wonderful! I can't wait to get until I can get in to pick it up. All the tracks are great!
when listening to the comments last night about Storm's performance (which was definately not my fav of hers)I was remembering the end of the Alien version of "I will survive" There is a clip of it on youtube.com ... I really like Storm but it kind of seems as though her she is losing a little something each week. Not sure what's going on there.
At the moment, I think Dilana and Lukas are the front runners. There are lots of things I love about both of them. Lukas has an instinctive creativity in song writing that I haven't seen from Dilana. I really love him and he draws me into his performances. Dilana, in my opinion, has killed every performance so far. I think she is fabulous and love her style and stage presence ... she gives a fantastic show and I know she would have great chemistry on stage with the guys.
And because I think she would be great with the guys I would like to see Lukas play with them tonight to see how he works with them.

from the mouth of Gilby's blog...
"in terms of songwriting and who we choose, there are two sides to every coin. Roger Daltrey never wrote anything in The Who—Pete Townshend wrote everything— but Daltrey’s still probably one of the greatest frontmen around. Of course it’s great that the Rockers can write because you want them to contribute. When the singer is singing words they wrote, they can often relate to them better. But of course, that’s not always the case. Look at a band like Fall Out Boy— the bass player writes everything but the singer sings it. So it always works out differently."
this to mean speaks about Dilana. can't write a song for jack, but she's one hell of a frontwoman!!!

(listening to Blue Bruises today!)
Dave. Man. I wish I could see what you see in Dilana. I loved her Lithium, but I listened again and... not so much. Maybe she was something fresh that first show but it went stale fast. She has an interesting voice, maybe that's what Supernova needs, but to me every performance is the same. Does she even understand what she's singing? Cliche "yeah! come on man!" stuff in the middle of a father/son ballad. OK so I hate that song, maybe I'm not being fair. But jeez. I'm just not seeing it.
Posted by: fourteenth at August 16, 2006 12:19 PM
I think some of those girls got the botox memo!! But seriously, Cake is cool and Storm is not. I'm so grateful she didn't try anything good. It would've confused the situation of her sucking.
I don't want my money back. I want her to go!!

Dave...you are right..last night was not the greatest of rock shows....I thought Dilana didnt do that good....She tried to make the song into something it wasnt...I feel that she isnt right for the group...Zayra was great...that took a lot of guts...It seems that some of these singers dont really know what acoustic is...

Dave, I love you first off! And I couldn't agree with you more about those three.. although they are my top three to win this thing. My vote has been with Lukas from day one, but Dilana is up there and now so is Ryan. I just don't think I could handle more than two songs straight with Dilana singing. Lukas has SO much talent.. he will definitely be going somewhere, no matter what happens.
You are really rad for updating your blog constantly.. not only that, but actually READING what your fans have to say.
I really think the house band deserves their own show next season. They should audition people to front THEIR band.
Rock on!

Hey man. :-) Dave, the one good thing about there being a “four hour voting window for the Tuesday performance shows is it leaves tons of time for listening to CDs while struggling not to go blind from distinguishing alphabetical and numerical symbols from nonsensical squiggles… LOL So, I had plenty of time last night to play “ONe and just savor the crazy, wicked guitar licks on tunes like “Left To Lose and “Said You’d Be. The album is as much fun to listen to as it must be for you guys to play. :-) I’m impressed by Steve’s vocals, too… Even after several listens, there are still places where I’m almost shocked when he just lets it rip with his upper register. He has the same “wow factor that Lukas has brought to the show with tunes like “Creep. I would give my eyeteeth to see Lukas perform with all three members of Supernova. I don’t know if he’ll get that honor *yet* but it would be amazing if he does. :-) Guess we’ll have to ‘agree to disagree’ about Dilana… Despite her popularity, I’m sorry, but her voice just sounded like an ashtray to me last night. LOL It’s sad, but I think she’s been wrecking her voice with too many years of cigarettes and alcohol. She should be the “Rockstar poster child for “butting out and the perils of abusing vocal gifts. As for Ryan, I have an inversely proportionate ratio going between his voice and performances… The more I like his voice, the less I like his stage presence, personality and inability to deliver consistently impressive performances. Magni is a big sweetie with a terrific voice, but he’s milk toast onstage and I think it will always be “family first for him.

Love your updates Dave, it's so nice to feel part of the inside crowd. Ignore what the press speculate, we know it's crap. It's actually really interesting to have you set the record straight, then to read all these supposed 'facts'. It certainly gives a lot of perspective on how accurate all the information is(n't).
I listed to the album several times yesterday and it's awesome. I really like the diversity of songs on it and can't yet decide which is my favourite.

A TEST!
A better idea for a full-on acoustic show, would have been to provide a "choice" to all of the contestants:
The choices could have been as follows:
1.) Select from one of the 8 cover songs
...OR...
2.) Perform an original song.
At least that way, SN could have totally bitched at the ones that didn't choose to perform their original song.
And, if their original was unsuited or questionable, they could have successfully critiqued them.
Now, that would have been entertaining & interesting to see!
Considering that "we" are the ones weeding through their resumes each week and narrowing down the final applicants for SN, at least we would have all had a better opportunity to learn more about their past work "portfolio" for this job interview.

Just to add onto Gilby's Roger Daltry comments, David Lee Roth, an incredibly powerful frontman back in the day, wrote some of rock's most ridiculous and throwaway lyrics ever and what did it matter as a backdrop to Eddie Van Halen's musical powerhouse? It didn't.
Good times...good times...
Vibes,

i know who left the show!!! i read a spoiler... i'm a spoiler addict... and i'm glad how it turned out... because it was the best thing for the one who left on a really high note!!!
and Dave... I hear Paris Hilton is looking for a man... lol...

STOP!!! with the Dilana lyrics... they're making me go blind!!! deaf!!! and dumb!!!
and here's my take off on a really distasteful joke that was on "The Family Guy"... me bad me bad...
Dilana's lyrics are as interesting as playing marco polo with Helen Keller!
Posted by: Savvy at August 16, 2006 01:13 PM
umm... yeah dilana?... yeah i just found this.. thought it should be shared...
Seriously Dave, Supernova don't need this kind of crap!

I was the Rockstar show every week with my mom and my sister, and this is one of the few weeks where I wasn't working on a Hatchet Show, so I actually get to see who's getting the axe next. Yay.
But last night when Mom and I were watching, we were seriously unimpressed with Lukas' preformance. I love Lukas, being the Canadian guy and all, but I think he might do better fronting a metal band, rather than a Rockstar show.
And dear God, who picks out Brooke Burke's clothing? Hideous stuff. Just absolutely hideous.
And concerning the tabloid-y-goodness, I heard yesterday that you were having your fifth affair! Oh, dear me, Dave! Someone needs to learn to keep it in his pants! Haha. Yeah, uh no. Gotta love Corner Store magazines. The bitches.
But seriously, good luck in the future.

ANOTHER TEST!
Considering we are all whining about the song selections (myself inclusive).
Here's another idea to test the contestants:
The Song Selection Choices could be as follows:
(This would be a HEAVY-POWER-ROCK Song Selection Episode)
1.) Select from one of the cover songs
(these would be a number of heavy power-house rock songs)
...OR...
2.) Perform an original song.
Now, that would be very, very interesting & entertaining to see how each of them pick and choose a song.
And it would give SN more ammo, to tear into some of them based on their song selections and performances.
Posted by: Joanna (from Toronto) at August 16, 2006 01:17 PM
Just got the new cd...
It ROCKS. HARD. Hope to see this material live before too long. I don't get to CA often but will try very soon.
Have been plugging it all over, and I wish you guys every success with it. I dig the new approach to marketing (and your comments on your video on Myspace about the Biz engineering its own demise.)
p.s. Anyone that reads/pays attention to/believes rumours about someone else's personal life ought to get one of their own.
Posted by: Fiona at August 16, 2006 01:23 PM
SONG SELECTION IDEA:
Maybe RS.MSN could do some quick and easy market research to find out what cover songs "WE" would like to hear performed on the show.
Maybe a long list of songs could be compiled (as decided by SN as well as the show execs), and then put up a simple poll question with the listed songs on the RS.MSN website.

I just began watching this show about a month ago when someone did LA woman so far the best performance. I know he's gone now, oh well. I think the judges do well in calling the the performances yes sometimes they're boring and when they're good/great I find I sing along and blast the tv, when they suck I turn it down yawn, or flip the channel, and miss things like Dave taking off his shirt, any chance of a repeat performance of that? Well anyway this is the best show on right now and I agree Storn was terrible I was embarresed for her Lucas has great vocals and Ryan is good yet makes me a little nervous? but he's hot. and dilan very good. And of course I think Zayra has a career in the Celine Dion genre,eh!
Posted by: karin at August 16, 2006 01:41 PM
Buh-bye, Patrice (*waves*)....next week, Zayra (and that is staying way past her expiration date!!!).....
I gave my children each a copy of (ONe) and they both love it.....I am waiting for another copy from Amazon to come, so I can give it to my boyfriend, and I bought one for myself to have, plus I am plugging it hard at work to everyone.....again, thanks, Dave, for making me proud to be a fan.....

I think you guys were thrown off by Storm's outfit last night. You were right, it was wrong. But you were overly harsh in your criticism of her delivery. This song is kitsch, and she removed some of that element and replaced it with strong, pure vocals. She just looked weird in that zoot suit. It think she is trying to show that she is a serious female performer, not just eye candy who sings. After all the pro-fem comments that Jill's grind produced, you can see why she would feel the need to prove this.
Toby sang his like he'd just done one too many hits; it was dreadful--I hid my face, glad it would be over Really soon. The drums were the only thing he did right. He is just running scared now, and I cannot believe you all loved it--think you just have gotten to love Toby as a pal and drinking buddy.
Ryan is NOT right for this band.
PLEASE, let Patrice go home tonight, even if she is not in the bottom 3--you can see it in her face, she knows she should go; she probably Wants to go back to the place she does belong. It is Not on this show.
Zayra, via con dios, adios. Cute skirt.
Glad you are staying single for a while, take some time for yourself, be at peace. Love, love. M

"P.S. Just to set the record straight, I am currently not dating ANYONE."
there are pictures of you and jenna all over the place. but if people actually look and see, you have your wedding ring on then so it is obvious that the pictures are old. i don't understand why everyone is all concerned about whom you may or may not be dating. it is not anyone's buisness and the last time i checked, you are a grown man. i know i am personally very thankful that you are as open with us as you are about everything. and i really enjoy being a part of the 6767 family. you are good to your fans and we all love you for that.
but i guess people need something to talk about. i used to really enjoy buying magazines and reading about my favorite stars..now i will glance at them to see if any of the pictures are good and that is it. it is a shame really. thanks for being you, dave.
it was cool that your dad was in the auidence for the taping of tuesday's show. it was also cool of everyone who gave a shout out to THE PANIC CHANNEL!

-->>ANOTHER IDEA FOR THE SONG SELECTIONS
(This is based on a post above where the Fans Start to Decide on the Song Selections in a weekly POLL located on the RS:MSN Website)
Each week, the song that is leading in the polls would be "THE FANS SONG CHOICE" and this 1 song would be added to the board for all contestants to choose from.
(maybe a picture of a sold out stadium full of concert goers would be behind the song).
So the contestants could also start to fight over who performs "THE FANS SONG CHOICE" each week. And we would see who wants to please us!!!!
After all, we want them to fight for our attention and work hard for us also, not just for SN, since we'll be the ones ulimately buying the CD's and going to the SN concerts.
(& thinking ahead; maybe some of "The Fan's Song Choice Songs" could be also included into SN's Concert Tours as familiar flashback to the show")

My opinion on the contestance
Patrice: Does not have the charisma
Zaira: a bit freaky, not professional but fun to watch.
Toby: He should rather be in a boy band or in Idol
Ryan: I only liked him when he took the R.E.M song but i think he is too serious and arrogant
Storm: Love her look, like her voice, shes cool but shes not been doing good lately
Lukas: Love how freaky he is, he is cool on stage, but i dont like his attitude and his voice is not so good.
Dilana: Shes awsome, lovely personality...shes got that freaky look but is a sweetheart under that. She has a cool dimm voice and fits good with the band.
Magni is the one I think fits best with the band. He has this range in his voice, he is charming, he is probably very good to work with because he seems to get along with everyone and he has the passion for singing, writing and playing instrument. He also rocks on stage. If he would punk himself up a little bit he would be perfect.
So.....it comes down to Magni or Dilana....both fit with the band...but they are different in their own way.

Thanks so much for last nights strip down segment with Tommy - can you two get the encore?
Posted by: KuT at August 16, 2006 02:31 PM
I missed Magni's song last nite but everytime I've seen him he's been right-on, very hot.Any chance someone will do some hendricks like All along the watchtower? or some old zepplin? and just to add Lucas is amazing vocally and I'm not at all into the punk thing or tattoes etc, but he honestly has the talent despite the stage get-up.
Posted by: karin at August 16, 2006 02:37 PM
Patrice needs to go now. She's totally
outclassed. Z Girl did good last night, but
she is so not right for this band. Ã?ave is right,
someone should sign her to a Latin label, and
she could try to be the Latin Bjork or Annie
Lennox..she's quirky like them. I had been
thinking she's a less talented Annie Lennox, but
after last night she came across as a slightly
better Bjork, at least the tone of her voice.
The 3 best are Ã?ilana, Lukas and Toby. Ryan
is ok, but he seems like the rock version of
Ã?avid Blaine...always looks mad and uncomfortable.
He clearly should be in a band in the vein of Filter or Chevelle. I think it all comes down
to who is the best "fit" with the band, not necessarily who is the best singer. I don't
see it being Lukas. He should be in an
"alternative goth metal band." Something in
the vein of HIM or Sisters of Mercy or Ministry.
Something much darker that would fit his look
and vocal style better. So, that leaves Ã?ilana
and Toby. Toby "looks" the part, but Supernova
may become the hard rock version of Garbage if
they take Ã?ilana. Her song writing is more poppy,
but that might get them more airplay and sales,
while the "real fans" like the rockier stuff that
the rest of the band (cough Gilby cough) writes.

Posted by: Savvy at August 16, 2006 03:30 PM
The Vegas trip was about who SN could hang out with off stage, chemistry-wise. Unfortunately, some of the auditioners got caught up in the glamour of it and didn't realize they were still being auditioned...just not on stage.
Toby's adorable...and will attract many little groupie girls, but he needs to be babysat. SN is not going to be babysit. He's too inmature to handle the fame (and the partying that goes wth it). Same with Lucas - and how many times does Jason have to tell him the same thing - "open your vocal cords". And unfortunately, Patrice, opens hers too much and too wide - wow, that woman's jaw becomes unhinged like a snake...you'd think more would come out.
Seems like the band has already made up their mind. Dilana. She's one of my favorites, and a smart woman...talking to Tommy 1 to 1 while everyone else was drunk that she's the one. She's one of the few that caught onto that Vegas trip. However, I don't think her performance last night was anything to write home about, considering she messed up the lyrics, but she is the one that mostly interacts with the audience and house band (which seems to be the main thing the band has communicated what they are looking for).
Also, Storm did not deserve what she got in light of what she had to sing (is this disco superstar or rock?).
Ryan is growing on me. His intensity is wild...diggin it! He just needs to flip some of that anger into passion and interact with the audience more. He needs a night or two with one good woman...Tommy was right. And the only time I felt Magni's passion was when his family was there...he's sweet but so very very far from home.
And Zayra...she knows she's going. Why do you think she insisted on the original song? To promote HER song. She's already moved on. I'll miss her. She was actually very unique and entertaining. Maybe she'll be on one more week after Patrice leaves tonight. The show is getting quite predicable, but it's summer still...beats repeats and a nice break from reading. Wish it was more about art and less about money though. P.S. Really liked the string orchestra last night; something different.

WOW,so many comments already. Dave I'm glad to here you think Lukas was one of the rockers deserving of the encore. I went to todays taping, and I won't give anything away. I do have to say that during the recap they said Lukas' performance was down there with Storms. He wasn't highlighted as giving one of, if not the best performance of the night. That really pissed me off!!!! I was able to give Lukas a gift. The announcer, or whatever you call him, asked if anyone had any questions for the rockers. I was sitting in the bleachers, but I walked down to the stage behind the judges, and I was able to profess my love to Lukas on mike. I forgot I wanted to ask him if he's Italian. I just kept telling him I love him. He must be thinking who the fuck is this old lady that keeps saying she loves me!!!
OKAY TO MY MAIN SQUEEZE DAVE. OMG, HE SIGNED MY ONe CD. I WENT UP AND ASKED THE BODYGUARDS TO ASK HIM IF HE WOULD SIGN IT. HE WAS SO COOL, AND SAID SURE. I TOLD HIM THAT I'M LINDA, AND HE SAID "I KNOW WHO YOU ARE". WOW DAVE, WHEN I MET YOU AT CANES AND SAID 6767 YOU ASKED ME MY NAME, NOW YOU KNOW WHO I AM!!!! Wow! That's exciting. I can't wait to see who gets to sing tonight. I wonder how they decide that?
It'll certainly have a huge help in deciding who is right for the band. But it's very risky. It'll define you right then and there... which is probably why a lot of the contestants who played with the SN members usually ended up in the bottom three.
I agree, Zayra or Patrice tonight. Zayra HAS to be standing on her last legs tonight, although her song was beautiful.
I want Lukas to get the encore... that was my fave perf of his since Rebel Yell I think.

Conspiracy theory:-
Navarro wants to be in Supernova.
He's just biding his time, the 'Channel is but a project.
Gilby's ass is Navarro's, everyone knows that Gilby is only most famous for replacing Izzy long after the Gunners had done their best work.
Supernova will do one hideous designer fake rock first album before Gilby get's the Axl treatment form the rest of them and Dave slots in.
Naughty.

ps. GodDAMN that zoned-out brunette xanax-head Brooke is a hot bitch!
pss. so is that neon bonde hottie on the strings for the (largely cheesy and hideous) accoustic night, whose probably still passed out in Navarro's master bed with smeared lipstick.

I agree about song choices. You don't try to hire a sushi chef and judge them on how well they make spaghetti. Keep it real.
As for performances, I was shocked that no one called Toby on his horrible rendition of Salsbury Hill. I like the guy, but that was horrible.
Storm - I actually think she WAS singing the Cake version. She did the best she could given the song she had to work with, I thought.
Lukas - I simply can not stand the guy and would have no interest in following Supernova if he were fronting them.
Zayra - couldn't stand her at first but have lots more respect for her now.
Patrice - I think it's a shame that she has been so constantly and unconstructively criticized. The thing is, she's an awesome and very charismatic performer, excellent songwriter, and I think all the criticism has inhibited her. I'm all for honest, constructive criticism, but this seems unreal. How could you say she was so horrible last night but Toby was great when Toby totally BUTCHERED that song and nobody had a single negative comment for him??
Anyway...
I like Magni, and Ryan and Dilana - they're bringing it.
peace

anyone else thing that Zayra's been performing the way she wants other producers to view her - like she knew she wasn't going to make it so she made the best of a great publicity opportunity? She seemed so not upset about losing.
I really loved Magni's last performance. I think he was passionate.

Zayra might be too off beat and original for SN

Dave,
I listened to ONe a few times through.
Four words:
Make up with Perry.
And just for the record, I am not dating anyone either.
Posted by: Rich at August 16, 2006 06:28 PM
Wow that show was better than the performance show...pretty dope.Although I gotta say I am a fan of all music and there are very few performances over the 2 years or singers that I couldn't find some redeaming quality in.But I gotta say I cannot watch Ryan it's not that he's just an average singer hiding behind an angsty growl it's his whole style/stage presence that makes me really want to go on a snack break. It comes of as so manufactured he just doesn't seem like the real deal to me.
Dilana nice job with SN good stage presence that's her forte although she isn't interesting enough or has enough vocal range to entertain a large rock crowd for 2 hours. She still should be in the finale.
Posted by: KeithMoonLives at August 16, 2006 06:29 PM
Dave, You can "date" me anytime!!!
Dilana ROCKS...however, Lukas will attract more chicks....decision made..!!!!

I am surprised more people are not commenting on the new SN track, over at Rockband most have declared it to be a total piece of shit. I am on the West Coast so I will have to wait. But really strong negative opinions on a couple other boards seems not to many people liked it at all.
Posted by: lukasfan at August 16, 2006 06:33 PM
I really wasnt impressed with the Supernova track... Sounded to 80's for me.. I was expecting something Velvet Revolver like, not what I heard, i hope they got some harder more edgy stuff coming in the next couple weeks
Posted by: Ryan at August 16, 2006 06:35 PM
The first supernova track blew major cum testicals. What was with the dancers? Totally gay. Dilana sounds like she has a brillo pad stuck in her throat. Supernova needs to change their name and they need to rock out hard instead of gay ass Gilby "who the fuck is he?" Clark-type rock. I dont see myself or anybody buying a track that sounds like that. Dave the new record....nothing stands out with it....sounds like everything else on modern rock, which everyone knows is crap. Makeup with Perry, his voice was distinct and different, your new singers voice just sounds like everyone else.
PEACE GREASE.

you are so nice to your fans, clarifying that "dating" story when you don't have to. you are just a cool guy.

Hey Dave
I just wanted to drop in and say thanks!!!
The look on your face tonight was just priceless watching Zayra sing that song. I am still chuckling.
I was actually sad to see her go. Ok there are a bazillion Zayra haters out there, I'm just not one of them.
Sure I couldn't see her fronting SN but honestly I would rather have seen Patrice go then her. At least Zayra brang something to the table every week (even if it looked freaky and was a tad off key). Patrice just bores the hell out of me.
Thanks for keeping your blog real, I enjoy reading it every day.
/cheers
ps maybe you can tell us why the heck Canadian's were cut out of doing that contest to see the final show??? You have Canadian talent trying out to sing for it...

Everyone has opinions.
Mine?
Magni's Creep was but merely a smudge on the sidewalk compared to Lukas version.
Good effort Magni but no cigar.
Storm -> quit saying WHAT?? every time someones name is called out for the b3. I know you are an actress but its annoying as hell. Maybe no one should be picked for the b3?
Posted by: myson at August 16, 2006 07:06 PM
Yeah, I have to agree that the Supernova track was mediocre at best. It was so banal I had to take a second look to make sure Tommy was the one playing drums.
Wish Zayra was still there, always fun to see. I can't stand anymore of Ryan, his broadway melodrama, pretensious bullshit has to go.
Toby......time to head back down under, mate!
I kind of dug Storm's performance for it's campiness. It reminded me of a James Bond theme like "Goldfinger" or some shit. I mean you really have to appreciate Cake for making that song cool (because it's not).
Patrice. I have the feeling she's feeling defeated by all the negativity that's been coming her way and it has effected her performances. I thought her Radiohead song and "Higher Ground" were great but now she's barely hanging on. It's fairly obvious she's not going to be around much longer though. "Higher Ground" ranks as one of my favorite performances of the series although more due to Tommy than Patrice.
Dilana needs to change it up, it's gotten really stale. And now she's getting WAY too cocky. Lukas was good this week his performance would have been amazing if he had gotten out of the chair late in the song and rocked it hard. He needs to learn how to have a few drinks without passing out though.
Truly, Magni is fantastic. I think he's probably the best musician of the bunch and has great range and stage presence. Seems like a really good person. I'm pulling for him.

Dave,
The show tonight was great. I thought you did very well with Zayra. She does have a great voice but just not for SN. I was surprised that they didn't send Patrice home tonight also.
I really appreciate the fact that you have an area that you communicate with your fans. This is awesome. Here are my 2 cents about whether you are dating someone or not. I appreciate the fact that you are setting the record straight about dating someone. You don't have to comment to anyone on if you are dating someone or not. If you are that is great, if not, I don't think you have to worry about getting a date when you want to start dating again, if things do not work out with your wife and yourself, there are a ton of women who would love to go out with you. Keep your chin up and keep rockin!
Posted by: SheilaB at August 16, 2006 07:31 PM
I don't think the SN track sounded that bad it's just with Dilana singing it the whole lotion and thong vibe she brings comes through on the song.Of course Ryan couldn't have sung it.It wouldn't have worked.
If SN is smart and my guess is that they are they will be letting Mr.Rossi have as much input as he is able to in a short time period.Even if it's not writing whole songs just fixing lyrics and changing melodies will make a big difference and that is were his real talent lies.Yeah he's got the whole rockstar persona thing and he's got great ability to sing falsetto and hard on the same song and he holds back the anger in his vocals and then hits you with them which is cool. But it's his lyric/melody/writing abilty that could really make SN successful.

I liked the new SN song..the mix was great..the "dancers" sucked..shades of G n'R and their pastie clad pizza servers during the acoustic set.
Sorry to see Z go..funny SN finally bow to the public pressure and oust her; now the public likes her and is yelling for P's head..so fickle.
Storm should have gone in my opinion. She is soo fake it makes me want to barf..all her melodramatics and poseuring during the others songs..rude. Just a matter of taste, I guess.
What to look forward to now that Z's gone? Maybe a stage appearance by Dave and Marty. :D
Posted by: merrymagic at August 16, 2006 07:45 PM
I agree with your comments on Zayra, haha. I am so relieved that she's gone home. Next in line? Patrice. Mannn, she's SCARY!
Personally, my absolute favorite among the contestants is Ryan Star. But I don't see him as THE lead singer of Supernova. I think he'll do fantastic as a solo artist though, and I'd totally support him.
I can see Toby or Magni as fronting the band though. As for Dilana and Lukas, well... I know a lot of people like them, but in my opinion, I don't think they'll be good for the band in the long run. They'll draw a crowd, for sure, but I'm a little uncertain of how long they'll be able to do so. I don't see them growing with Supernova.
Magni and Toby, however, have a lot of potential. They'll be good for Supernova in the long run.
At least, that's my take on it. :)
Posted by: Noelle at August 16, 2006 07:53 PM
I'm sooo disappointed. The Supernova track had fab potential. But the melody/lyrics over it? Blew. Steaming. Chunks.
This is why Supernova NEEDS A GREAT SONGWRITER. Not a Dilana. Not a Toby. Not a popster like Butch Walker either.
Damn! I hope there's another songwriting clinic and they take it super-seriously. Patrice had the best melody by far, and Lukas gave it the most modern sound (which that track needs). Have them work together. Pleeeeeeeze.
I'm totally serious here. I want Supernova to produce great music that I'll love.
Please, Dave! DO something!

Hey Dave, I've been a fan of JA for years. I saw you guys w/ Love and Rockets, and after listening to to (ONe) for a little over 24 hours I've got to say. DON'T make up with Perry. This album may be some of your best work since RHCP. And I really enjoyed TNO and Strays. Left to Lose is just badass. I'm really digging this shit. Fuck the people who don't want you to grow. Hey Dave,
I'm an Aussie chick who is HOOKED on this show. Might just sign up for more freaking pay TV because of ROCKSTAR! ackk... I'll send you my bill baby.
Ok.. LOVING Dilana.. she is the stand out performer. Lucas is too arrogant for me and not thankful enough for his talent. I'm waiting for my fellow oz dude Toby to step it up..friends here in Melbourne have seen him perform and swear by him. I agree with you than Ryan is a broody performer and I'm not sure that is suited for the upbeat boys that are Supernova. Storm knows how to rock but isn't consistent. Magni has an incredible voice but might get lost on stage with the big boys..(pun intended). Zayra is a unique chick that would be better suited doing her own crazy thing. Patrice who?
Loving your everything Dave... keep it up (pun intended again hehe)

Dave if you are really friends with the guys in SN tell them ASAP that that song blew major chunks. There is nothing modern in there sound or new this is bad recycled 80s hair band rock, who in the hell is their target audience, everyone in my house hated it. And Dilana and the Michael Jackson dance moves dear God. Hey Tommy I want my money back and my summer.
Lukas, Toby and Magni run do not walk to the nearest exit.

Hey Dave,
I came across your website yesterday and I think it's amazing. I like reading your entries, it's great to know that you are an open person.
So far, I have seen all the episodes of this seasons's Rockstar Supernova and found that I do admire some of the performers. I also admire the style of judging that's carried out amongst the band and you - You guys give good advice to the contestants!!!
Last night, I had a first sight of one of your performances with the Panic Channel - "Why Cry" - It sounds great and I can't wait until the album is released in New Zealand.
Well, got to go for now,
thanks for your time :-)

i gotta say 2 things, for the 2nd i will apologize beforehand.
#1 - I knew those were the Forty Deuce chicks!!
I've been there and it's a great place! (plus I knew Tommy went there a few weeks ago.) Nice little touch, but it seemed rehearsed like Dilana knew she was gonna be up there with these chicks. but there's nothing really wrong with that.
#2 - As much as I love T Lee, Jason and Gilby, I don't think I'm digging the Supernova sound just yet. but give me time.
P.S. PATRICE IS ATROCIOUS. she is so boring

Since the band wants to hear it changed up every week, and the song selection committee doesn't care if it RAWKS, how about some more theme nights?
Week 8 - Gilbert and Sullivan
Week 9 - Serbian Folk Songs
Week 10 - POLKA!
Week 11 - Sinatra Standards

DAVE-GREAT SHOW TONIGHT,
WITH A LOT OF FUN SURPRISES!
(and you looked amazing as always :)
SN made a good decision tonight.
And it's probably the best, timing wise, for Zayra. Since she's on top of the world right now-she'll probably get going again in no time.
Intersting to see that both Magni & Patrice chose songs that were already performed by Lukas.
(hmmmm- appears that Lukas has made an impression on them too :)
It was nice to finally see a genuine vulnerability in Magni's performance tonight.
(not nearly as good of a performance as Lukas' rendition, but still technically very sound and original). He's a good soul.
Patrice keeps trying to. I just find it difficult to criticize her now, because I think she has been critisized, battered, and bruised by SN(and that's just too harsh week after week).
She's now like this injured little creature. I feel sympathy for her.
So I find it positive of SN for giving her 1 last chance to try to redeem herself with a good performance next week so she can at least leave on a happier note when she's eliminated next week.
SN-Needs constructively critique performers- Not crucify them.
Posted by: Joanna (from Toronto) at August 16, 2006 08:48 PM
Sorry, Dude...I just don't see what you do in Lukas. There is just this poser type attitude or look or something. Maybe it is just the way he comes across on TV. I DO agree about Dilana...LOVE her. I think the thing with Patrice is that she just tries way too hard. She copies whatever it is that the SN boys compliment anyone else about...and her sound just isn't right. Zayra...awesome chick...but,really, WTF? I also wish they had just gone ahead and done a double exit tonight. Magni is awesome!! He ROCKED Creep!!
Posted by: jadecreator at August 16, 2006 08:55 PM
Tonight, for the first time, Mr. Jaded and I were kinda over Dilana. I'm glad that other people commented on the MJ moves too. I laughed out loud when she did the kick. Jason keeps getting on Lukas about the gritty vocals because he wants to hear another sound, but Dilana only has that gravelly, gritty, one-too-many-smokes sound. I'm getting tired of it.
Ryan, Magni and Lukas are the best of the lot, in my opinion. An entire album or concert of the raspiness would be too much for me, I think.
And the other thing I've had enough of is the whole act Storm does when someone gets called out for the bottom 3. She's always over the top with the "what? NOO!" kind of antics. I hope she's sincere, because it looks pretty fake to me.
As for critique versus crucifying...well, that's the way the industry is. It's not a hand holding, Kum By Yah (or however the eff you spell it) kind of thing. And these guys are risking potentially millions of dollars on one of these kids. If he or she can't handle being told something sucked ass, then they aren't cut out for the industry. Period.
Just my opinion.

Posted by: Jen at August 16, 2006 09:10 PM
SO it's NOT OK if Jill grinds a little on Gilby during a song, but it is OK to have random dancing chicks on stage. IF the music is good enough you don't need that crap.

Dave I have to be honest here ... just as you hated Storm's version of 'I Will Survive' ... the Supernova song was really bad!!
Quite a disappointment when the guys all take to the stage for the first time with a Rocker, and it sucks! And not the Rocker but THEM!?!
It's going to be hard to take the rest of the shows seriously after this if that's the best they have in a debut song.

OMG
Was this what we have all been waiting for? And SN was afraid their greatness would overshadow one of these contestants? HAHAHAHA!
I thought they were going into a modern direction? That was the worst thing I've ever seen on a talent competition. I'd throw those suckas out and place my bets on Lukas, Josh and Zayra with solo CD's.
And its really lame you didn't know the Blue October song. That's a good group.

Finally, Z is gone! The SN track was ok. Melodically it could have been better. I think Lukas could write something great to it. It's intuitive with him. Ryan? No, he has the squinty, puzzled look 'ala Puddy from Seinfeld. Think about it...

Magni's Creep was pitchy. Especially in the beginning. Dilana's voice sounds like it's going through a Marlboro Red Filter.
Posted by: jack at August 16, 2006 10:17 PM
Mr. Supernova producer, seriously, with all due respect, the songs for the contestants SUCK. And its not any better for "you pick week" Evanescence for Storm my ***! I thought this was a rock show!
Deep Purple, Allman Brothers, even the Eagles, Steve Miller band, anything, hello. I'd like to see any of these guys with a Led Zeppelin classic or two so we could hear some actual rock and roll. And quit recycling songs other performers did for the future shows, I'm losing hope. It's like you're a cheap low wattage radio station that could only afford the rights to a dozen songs and play them over and over. Even some U2. Heck, even some Cake. something, please.
What you have right now with all these talented performers is lounge lizards toothless moldy golden oldie act tryng to bring the rock. yeesh. What are they supposed to do.
It's a real waste cause these guys are talented and I love the shows. They only get to do this TV thing for a little while, give em some real rock for us to remember 'em by.
You're the only show producer I know how to reach, thanks for having a blog.

Lukas better ruuuuuuuuun, ruuuuuuuuuuuun, ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunnnnnnnn away from Supernova.

Yikes, they couldn't have made it clearer tonight that Dilana is their pick, and it was pretty insulting to the rest of the contestants to tell them after the SN/Dilana performance that it wasn't over. Please don't keep insulting the viewers. All the singers are professionals and none of them are going to change in any measurable way in the next few weeks. So the disingenuousness of the band, and you too Dave, is a bit much.
And that song -- ack! What's really depressing is I've got to assume that's the best thing Supernova has, because who in their right mind would perform their second-best? That was AWFUL. 80s dated, w/no hook, no catchy lyrics, no great melody, nothing. They lost major cred tonight, and I won't be surprised if the contestants start competing to be voted off the show as fast as they can do it with a little dignity.
And keeping Patrice? That's just cruel. They haven't had anything nice to say, much less a friendly face to show during her performances, in weeks. That's just not nice, and certainly not supportive of a decent fellow artist.
Boy, this show is really losing me. I'll hang in another week, but if it doesn't improve, I'm out of here.

Dave...you MUST convince the band to pick LUKAS!!! you have nooo idea how many fans this guy has..shit he has a whole Country backing him up..dilana is cool and all, but i doubt she'd fill an arena or sell millions of albums as the lead.

Dave, if you don't take a peak at the Rockstar post board now would be the time:
"That was the biggest slice of 80's hair-band cheese I've ever seen. I think I threw up in my mouth a little. I wanted to get up and start smacking my tv around. What a disappointing disaster. At least it has clarified (for me) that Dilana is not "suitable for their band" - I think she's too good for it, as I really like her voice, otherwise."
"I'm so glad I'm not the only one who hated that song. I was half expecting them to say "Just kidding" when it was over... but they never did:(
"
"That was HORRIBLE. Tear my eyes out and plug my ears horrible. WTF?"
"Now I just feel really badly for the guys trying out, they're probably all wanting to go home now. Maybe not so much Dilana, let her have it, she seems to really like them. Lukas, sneak out the back door...."
"Id rather listen to inxs..."
"I'm getting the feeling that the hamsters are starting to band together, as in 'US the contestants', against 'THEM the idiots'."
"These guys are freakin clown shoes!!!! I'd rather listen to the emergency broadcast systems "beep", my alarm clock and Celine Dion inside a tin can instead of these guys!!!!.."
Either they are setting Dilana up to get slaughtered (not my fav) which is so mean!!!! Or they are offering nothing new, exciting and something that just sucks. Many people have been watching this show consistently and SN blew it on their debute...and disappointed everyone after all that hype...and I don't think it was Dilana's fault. I agree with all the others Run Lukas Run.

I can hear the crickets rockin' the Joint on New Years Eve already. It might not be too late to book Blue Oyster Cult!!
I know they're 'your guys' Dave so you had to be supportive but WTF! was that??
As the old saying goes you don't get a second chance at a first impression. SN blew it.

Oh my. The lyrics and melody that Supernova chose to put over that bed track were just "cornball". No wonder they picked Dirty Dilana and her Micheal Jackson dance moves to sing to it. Did not like that one bit. In the words of Tommy Lee - the lyrics were forgettable, and that's not a good thing. The solid gold dancers were just the fromage on top of a big old plate of refried 80s cheese.
Someone needs to tip off Supernova that the buzz over this song is NOT good. They made a fool of themselves if that is the best they have to trot out to the public for their first appearance.
During the bridge I couldn't stop myself from singing Lukas's "stop talking, stop talking" lyrics he wrote during the songwriting clinic.

It's sad, I ahte to say this, but phil had a point. (but i also agree with the reason they sent him packing)

I got this from another board and it is one of the funniest reviews of the SN crapfest. Also my rock station was ripping it apart, not good news for SN.
"Who the fuck wrote that pile of crap that I was fed tonight? I want their home address so I can go vomit in their bedroom slippers, please.
That song... sounded so old I think SuavePorn owes me a lifetime supply of mothballs because I feel like that song has infected my household. After the song, the upholstery on my couch magically sprung holes. But, now that i think about it, it might be from my fingernails ripping into the chenille with my bare fingers to keep myself from pressing mute on the remote. if this keeps up, I'm duct taping the remote to my back door just in case."
Posted by: lukasfan at August 16, 2006 11:41 PM
but seriously folks I had to leave the room when SN came on, no I would'nt want to see Dilano for a 2 hour concert she's just too much. Magni was great although I get concerned he'll burst a blood-vessel. And he could tone it down on Iceland. Dave put on the kid-gloves for Z which was sweet, ah. It's quite apparent copyrights and dead presidents are the reason for the song selections, so cheap with the budget. And Dave's comments usually say what were all thinking anyway, and the SN judges buffer things nicely, afterall everyone will be cut except one. Best DN comment so far "I have a job and you don't" LOL
Posted by: karin at August 16, 2006 11:46 PM
i love the show because dave is on it but the supernova guys looked really bad tonight and having 4 dancers prancing around: no one going to a rock show wants to see that britney/jessica type stuff.
supernova = super no-go

I was doing the same thing, at least they took out the Woo Hoos, but they brought in strippers, I hope Gilby did not feel uncomfortable. SN had to have watched it tonight on TV and just felt a little sick. It was all kind of bad.
Posted by: lukasfan at August 17, 2006 12:10 AM
wow, Dave...you've gotta ...lot o'comments here! Looks like the masses (and I have been surfing the internets!) were not likin' the new SN ditty...eeks! Not good.
Personally, I was left unphased by it...I didn't think it was hideous, rather I did not think it was worth $.99 either...get my drift!?!?!?
My observations out here in cyberspace, is that alot of the fans of the so called 'favorites' right now are feeling rather...uhmmmmm, DISCONTENTED with the direction of the music that this debut tune exhibited...
My hope is that they can only get better, right?!?!
Hmmm...
Anyway, good luck on your TPC release...and uhmmm, good luck w/the rest of the RS season...
Personally, I have discovered some great music through this years season...none of which has been right for SN, but for that, I care less this year...
Long live our MiZtreZZ;) (and dirtyPhil too...yeah, he's not looking so off base now, eh!?!? all...not the sharpest tool maybe, but apparently a fairly accurate ear...)

That "original" song by SN was ASS. What a complete embarrassment. Where do these guys get off "judging" anybody? I will watch next week only for the trainwreck factor. I have no doubt the next original song will be as tiresome and uninspired as the first.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for being here. We knew it was inevitable but many will miss Z next week. She wasn't suitable for the band but was always entertaining. Fortunately she saw it coming and wasn't too upset, I don't get off on seeing unhappy people.

Wow, that Supernova song was booooring. Doesn't matter who sings it. I was more than a little surprised. TPC album is way more interesting.

Must admit, the highlight for me was probably the guys getting their gear off. Beautiful, boys! .... somebody slap those censors, you see far worse on MTV on a saturday morning. Was it the nipple rings? (ah but I guess on MTV its naked women, far less shocking... grrrr.)
So far I've been keen on Dilana - she rocks, and she seems like a decent human being too. I want to be her, she's so cool. But I have a thing for Ryan. Such intensity. Is he a one-trick pony, too? Getting a bit bored with some of the old standards getting reworked - let's hear some real rock, eh?
Posted by: Euri at August 17, 2006 01:02 AM
The SN song absolutely sucked big dead bears.
The remaining rockers had better think long and hard about whether they want this gig. It's going to be a disaster. Even if it's totally successful, there's no way these guys can last together for more than 18 months.
If you're in, say Lucas' position and you have a good shot at the prize, do you go for it? Or do you take your national exposure and go build your own career? If it were me, I'd say RUUUUUUNNNNNNN

F’ing F me, Z just tore that sh*t up the intensity she knew she was going home and just gave it everything she had, and the best part she gave her friends Blue October some national air time. She’s a class act. (I think I lover her) *back off, quit pushing, damn it Jason she’s mine dude.*
Supernova: the song was pure Crue ( I never liked motley crue) how do you go from Metallica to SuperCrue and not want to slit your wrist?(dude you played with Kirk Hammett, Hetfield and Lars). They even used the T*dancer schtick from girls girls girls. That said, it wasn’t the song that sucked so much as the singer. Vince Neil could have pulled it off. (I think I’m going to be sick now)
*Dave do you think that SuperCrue got that when you said those four were awesome you were talking about the strippers?*
Magni: I truly think that was a genuine “YES when your name was called for B5. after having seen what SuperCrue had in store for their singer you were as happy as an Icelandic clam for a chance to escape.
But dude when you didn’t care anymore (so it appeared anyway) about trying to impress SuperCrue, dude that was the shit. You just killed dat shit.
For a minute there at the end of the show looked like Lukas was trying to sneak out the back door. I can just hear it now *Lukas:damn I sucked this week you should vote me off. Magni:No no no it was me who sucked I’m next I’m next. Toby: no mate it was me I have to admit I suck I really wanted this but carry on with out me. Dilana: hey over here…woo hoo over here I’m the One I’m the one.
Peace

Dave, after that nice L.A. Times article and then this shit stinking SN performance by Diyawna and the Muppets you must feel like you won the lottery only to find you are the captain of the Titanic. I can see this turning into a disaster of epic performance besmirching your reputation. I mean, didn't you compliment Super no-va for that caca last night. Other than that, though, I loved the show.
Posted by: Dingo Dog at August 17, 2006 01:39 AM
..."*Dave do you think that SuperCrue got that when you said those four were awesome you were talking about the strippers?*"... SO TRUE ha ahahahaaaa
someone else posted about it not being good enough to grind on Gilby but it's good enough for 4 strippers?!?!? SO TRUE! maybe gilby didnt know about it??!?!!!?
DAVE it's time you played on stage like you did with marty casey! That'll turn it up!!!
Posted by: TN at August 17, 2006 02:04 AM
Okay, I disliked the SN song but that's not what bugged me. I'm sure it's been mentioned here already, but the performance made SN come across as a band of hypocrites. Hey, Gilby, what happened? I thought that using your sexuality was 'cheap'...THEN WHY THE GRINDING DANCERS? Dilana danced with them and I didn't notice any lecturing HER. Maybe that's cause everyone on the show is too busy kissing her ass? I feel bad for the other rawkers because no matter how many times SN says that it doesn't mean anything, it's obvious Dilana is a favorite, and I'll be very surprised if she doesn't win this.
Also: if I were Jill, MAN (tm Gilby!) would I be pissed.
Posted by: Lydia at August 17, 2006 02:21 AM
Dave, I'd really like to see “Supernova succeed and I wish 'the boys' well... But please have them all sign up for a Lukas Rossi songwriting clinic, pronto. LOL Seriously, after watching SN perform (that’s really too kind a word in this instance) tonight, I think the SN guys should be in the bottom three for the next elimination show and have to fight to keep their jobs. I had to scrub my brain to remove all memory of that… whatever it was… from my consciousness. If that’s their best song material that they want to debut to the world, they’d better burn it in a trash barrel before they publicly embarrass themselves again. And this is from someone who *likes* all of them and wants them to go far with this project. I’m giving them a “do over and pretending tonight didn’t happen. I hope they can pull their act together in coming weeks and months. I just don’t know how they’re going to critique any of the other performers, now, and display a shred of credibility. If the grinding, dancing strippers are their idea of a “wow factor stage show, I don’t know whether to chuckle or sob, truly. I’m blown away… *What* were they thinking?
Posted by: Sanlin at August 17, 2006 02:35 AM
Dave! I'm old like y'all and I can't wait forever for there to be some decent rock on Supernova. A girl could die of boredom.
Can you just give the guys in charge of song selection a poke in the ass and make them choose something less boring? The life you save could be my own.
Posted by: Sonia at August 17, 2006 03:00 AM
Ok, I've been meaning to get my blog on for days, and it looks like most are saying a lot of the things I've been thinking, and with so many topics to cover... I too would like to know who picks the songs for song selection and the reasoning behind them? I'd love to hear some Tool, Perfect Circle, Doors, Jane's Addiction, NIN, Pixies, 30 Seconds to Mars, Radiohead (ANYTHING BUT "CREEP" - even Thom Yorke doesn't like that song).... I mean really, out of all the amazing Radiohead songs to choose from.
My top three picks are Ryan, Dilana, and Lukas, but I think the winner will really depend on if the contest is about finding a singer that will fit into the mold Supernova has already established, or if they are looking for someone that has their own creative abilities that will be allowed to contribute them. 4 equals or a 3 + 1 puppet situation?
I wasn't a big fan of Sayda's, but I really liked her performance tonight, and I think she could be very successful in her own style. Her original last night was beautiful.
I too did not enjoy the SN performance with the "dancers." It reminded me of the 80s "Girls, Girls, Girls" vibe. It was such a turn off. It looked very unrehearsed and was so not innovative. It's hard for me to believe that Jason Newsted is in this "Mot-licca N' Roses" super band. I met him and the rest of Metallica on the "And Justice For All" tour in 1989. They were some of the nicest and most professional guys (and I was only 15 at the time!). Talking art and music with them was just amazing. Anyway, Crue and GNR were in the same kind of vein, but Metallica was not. After hearing some of the Supernova material now, sadly it's just not sounding so super.
Dave you are the best and sometimes the only reason for watching the show. That censorship for you and T-Lee taking your shirts off was ridiculous - such a double standard. I mean it's ok for the "rockers" to get up there in sparkly bras but you can't show any skin? Wait, maybe if you wore a sparkly bra it would be ok?
Ok, my blog overfloweth... Dave, I really appreciate your websites, your warmness towards your fans, and the opportunity to communicate with you so directly. I'm looking forward to you doing some SLR soon! Love and peace.

I knew as soon as Zayra made it back into the bottom three she would be gone. Although Patrice escaped this week, I have a feeling she will be going home next week.
Have a good day everyone, especially you Dave you sexy thing you.

Dave --
I know Zayra isn't right for Supernova, but it is downright wrong that she be cut before Patrice, who is just awful.
Not only is Patrice overly melodramatic, she demonstrates no understanding of or feeling for the music she's singing. Her rendition of "Celebrity Skin" was embarassing to watch. I wanted Courtney Love to appear and punch her in the face.
I know what you're saying about Zayra not being for Supernova, but neither is Patrice and because of her horrendous singing and Disney-fied posing as a rocker, she should've gone first. Zayra should at least be rewarded with that for being somewhat original and having a rocking ethic.

Based on the Supernova song, I'd have to say if I were on the show, I'd be working hard to get second place. It was like Poison and Whitesnake had sex and gave birth to a Ratt cover band.
Posted by: lpmiller at August 17, 2006 06:12 AM
I'm utterly disappointed that Zayra didn't do her version of "Rubbing one out" (that old DNAV classic). Where's the rock gone? Can someone please tell me.
Posted by: leroy at August 17, 2006 06:27 AM
Oh god that was bad.
The supernova song... sucked ass.
The dancing girls... made a total hypocrite out of Gilby.
The performance... Boring!
Lukas's version was much much much better, and I echo the thoughts of just about everyone else viwing this:
Run, boys. Let Dilana have it - she deserves it and they deserve her. Lukas for sure can do better than this, and Ryan... man Ryan must have been ready to scream watching that.
That whole thing makes me think Jason can't possibly be taking this thing seriously now. There's no way at this stage I'd have seen him trading in his musical integrity for dancing girls and lip synching, but apparantly, we were wrong.
Posted by: slutmonkey57b at August 17, 2006 06:28 AM
Oh, Supernova, I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt because of Newsted, but that was just...foul. Honeys, the 80s are so over, and this is from someone who is 38. How could the lot of you sit on the couch and declare you intentions to do something big and new and then deliver that archaic crapfest as your first impression? Don't get me started on the dancers--as cheap and pathetic a move as I've ever seen, unless it was meant to distract from the bad song (it did). Gilby, if you knew anything about that, you are the worst kind of hypocrite.
And by the way, ripping Storm for not doing something original and then suggesting that she should have sung it like Cake did? Seeing a problem there? She is now the only reason that I feel even remotely interested in watching this show, although if I were her, I'd be packing my bags and getting the hell out of that mansion right now. Pray for second, Stormy!
Posted by: Autonoe at August 17, 2006 06:43 AM
That was by far the biggest crapfest I've ever seen. I am a Lukas and Ryan fan all the way and I pray to GOD they dont win because that is just embarassing. They should at least let them do their own lyrics because the lyrics SN wrote are ridiculous. RUN LUKE RUN!
Posted by: Janette at August 17, 2006 06:52 AM
I'm not feeling what Supernova has to offer. The song selections are horrible. I mean... 'I Will Survive'? Supernova wants to bitch about what the contestants are singing, yet they have to choose from recycled Nirvana songs and Gloria Gainer! Throw some Alice in Chains, System of a Down, Jane's Addiction (not sucking your dick Dave), Danzig, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc... Stuff that, indeed, rocks.
Posted by: Craig Dammit at August 17, 2006 06:55 AM
The song last night was ASS. Talk about going back a few decades. I love the guys, I really do.. but damn did that suck. I think Dilana or Magni is perfect for this band.. as someone else pointed out, Lukas better "ruuuuuuuuuun, ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuun, ruuuuuuuuuuuun!" He is better than what they have to offer. In my opinion, he should looking for people to play in HIS band.

When the other guy (that i dont remember his name) went home, u all talked a lot about his commitment a stuff, and Dave said this posts were a lot of fun to read... well, i think THIS post a waayy much More Fun!!! i didnt see the performance, but if it had sexy dancers i'm guessing it was really cheesy and wrong!(and old!)
Posted by: Marivic at August 17, 2006 07:20 AM
Where do I begin? Last night was atrocious. I should have kept this show my dirty little secret. Instead, everyone I know will think I love this cheese-fest.
This is what Supernova means by fresh and new? Dancers?! Trite lyrics?! Aaarrggghh!
Lukas is my favorite, with Storm close behind. The only hope this band has at this point is for Lukas to inject something unique into it and save their asses. I hope now that he does not get this gig, because it is an abomination to the evolution of rock. Lukas is too current for this bunch, and I'm their age!
One more thing: if Butch Walker was involved with these lyrics and that music, then he should be fired right now. Apparently his time has come and gone. Okay, I'm done venting.
Posted by: Sparky at August 17, 2006 07:28 AM
SO it's NOT OK if Jill grinds a little on Gilby during a song, but it is OK to have random dancing chicks on stage. IF the music is good enough you don't need that crap.
Posted by: elizabeth at August 16, 2006 09:22 PM
I think the dancers were there for TL's benefit than anybody elses. When I go to see a rockband I go for the music, not to see some chicks in heat.
Posted by: Carol at August 17, 2006 07:31 AM
Sparky, I totally agree. The dancers, although hot humping all over Dilana (I guess), were a bit much. Especially at this point in the show. Save it for Vegas, right?
The song was...eh. And it's got Butch Walker written all over it. I have to know if he really had a hand in it because I couldn't help but singing "hot girl in a good moooood" (see Butch's new album) over the barely audible band's music. Why on earth were the hand claps/backing track louder than the band? They're three amazing musicians; they shouldn't be drowned out by hand claps. And back to Butch Walker, I actually like his new album. It's fun and pointless and ironic...but he's got that market covered. Argh.
I wasn't so surprised Magni was in the bottom three even though I knew he wasn't going anywhere. His Bowie performance (great Bowie song, by the way!) somehow turned into Robbie Williams doing Bowie. The suit, the dancing...confusing image disconnect.
Was Patrice trying to make a bold statement to the guys and the world with "Celebrity Skin"? I don't think they care.
/end rant

Posted by: Steinunn at August 17, 2006 07:48 AM
Hey Dave,
I think the two best picks for SuperNova would be Lucas or Dilana. It's true, Lucas DOES need to open up his throat and not sing so growly all the time but he has something different and unique....some sort of Charisma that no amount of money could buy and he would NOT disappear in front of the SuperNova guys. He seems a bit young and green. Needs to lay off the sauce, and lose some of that stubborness. He has shown a certain amount of open mindedness and willingness to learn (actually more than JD had at that point in the competition). Also, he has demonstrated a lot of song writing skills. Sometimes all it takes is ONE fantastic song to get a band on the road to superstardom and make tons and tons of money. I remember when JD did It Ain't Pretty on INXS last year. You could almost SEE the avarice in the band's eyes and a little trace of drool coming out of their mouths. It was obvious that THEY WANTED THAT SONG. It's paying off for them BIG time too.
As for Dilana, I find her charisma is boundless and she has a level of maturity mixed with rocker chick that would be an asset. She would DEFINATELY not disappear in front of the guys (as last night's performance showed). I'd really have to see more of her song writing though. That last song wasn't impressive but it's hard to judge from only one song.
I really like Magni's voice but he doesn't have a lot of charisma. He's somewhat boring to watch. A good voice for recording certainly, not as exciting for touring.
Quite frankly, I'm not sure that the SuperNova guys can form a unique sounding band that will be sustaining in the long run UNLESS they choose a singer with a certain "je ne sais quoi".
Rock being such an old boys club, I'm wondering if they wouldn't be wise to choose a woman rather than a typical guy's guy *yawn*. I'm becoming more convinced that it should be Dilana (whose voice is so unique and strong it's a real standout). It's as strong as a guy's, deep and not shrieky (as some women's rock voices can get when pushed too far) but at the same time all woman too. Then they can capitalize on that whole Black-eyed Peas, No Doubt/Gwen Stephani thing.
Posted by: suzeeCannuk at August 17, 2006 07:51 AM
Oh Jason. I have so much love for you and then you stamp your name on that cheesy suckfest? That was the most tedious hour of my life . . . what, the song was only 3 minutes? Could have fooled me - it went on and on and on, with little change in the rythym. Why are you ripping off Poison when Lukas can write something better? Are you sorry for letting Josh go now, bitches?
And Dilana fit right in, unfortunately. Her voice is tedious, her dancing is tedious and I would never pay to listen to her gravel out the lyrics for more than one song. My ass would have been out that door.
Guess I was relying too much on Jason to put some meat into the band, cause Gilby "Candy" Clarke and TLee sure as hell aren't going to do it.
And Magni's version of Creep was atrocious. Wipe that entitled, smarmy smirk off your face - if that's truly your generation's anthem, maybe you should have spent a little more time listening to the emotional tone of the song before butchering it with your whole "I don't belong here (in the bottom 3)" bullshit. Ugh, hate. Lukas did a far more compelling version. Run, Lukas, run!
Posted by: Suzanne at August 17, 2006 07:54 AM
All I could think was, "Jesus, I can't believe Jason Newsted is in this band." If he's not incredibly bored, horrified, or both, something is deeply wrong.
Posted by: Helen at August 17, 2006 08:03 AM
And another thing: Dave, if you care about your friends, you will tell them in no uncertain terms that their debut song is horrific and to go back to work. Seriously, if you need to stage an intervention or something, do it! For all our sakes. Last night was NOT PRETTY. And you know what happens when the pretty leaves you.
Posted by: Sparky at August 17, 2006 08:11 AM
SN is a definite disappointment. Funny, these are the same guys that have spent the last month and a half putting everyone "in their place". It is true that Jason, Gilby and Tommy have had huge success over the years, all the more reason that they should know better. They might want to look at the direction this band is taking or as someone posted earlier "the only thing that will be heard New Years Eve will be the crickets chirping".
But, to end on a high note.... I love TPC!!!!!!!!! Dave you are the best!
Posted by: Michelle at August 17, 2006 08:17 AM
Dave, even though you have a vested interest in SN,
please don't try to defend that song and all the trappings of the 80's that were staged with it.
You'll just hurt your credibility.
And you can't just ignore the train wreck that is SN.
We all anticipate your next post.

Don't make her ongo the embarrassment that fronting Supernova may cause. This could honestly ruin her career before it takes off!! OR maybe Supernova wants a female to headline their group because it would bring all the better for the group. OR they want a female to front their band because if they chose a male; he may kick their asses (not discounting Dilana). Oh my goodness! DaveI am utterly dumbfounded. My bride and I have been watching the train wreck known as RS:SN with guilty pleasure – but it’s over. It’s been a fun ride watching you, as well as getting to see some great new talent that likely has a future. We see Lukas, Storm and Zayra moving on and gaining (re-gaining?) credibility in solo ventures, but see the band Supernova going nowhere. A post-er on this site said they were imagining crickets in ‘Vegas on New Years Eve and I think they’ve got the pulse of this thing. The Supernova song was A-W-F-U-L – “I wanna plug into you? Or something like that… Dear God. Did they have Dilana write THESE lyrics, too? Many post-ers have commented on it being like a bad Crue song, but the reality is that I love old Crue and I can’t think even the basest song of theirs is this craptacular. I don’t even see this as bad ‘80’s hair band music – this is ‘70’s bar band re-tread, complete with a set of scooter trash to add to the aura. To that end, the only viable contestants for this garbage-band are Dilana and Toby. Their limited range, lyrical vocabulary and trite stage tricks are the perfect match for this flairless, soulless music. So, as much as my house digs you, Dave, we are taking RS:SN off of our Tivo Season Pass. …There is nothing to see here – just move it along… On a positive note, The Panic Channel’s album ONe is absolutely fantastic. – DP

Be careful. Your credibility is on the line.

I think some people here are being a bit too harsh on Supernova's first performance. The lyrics weren't very good, but I'm fairly certain that Dilana wrote those lyrics, not SN. And I got the impression that that song and the others SN will be playing are far from being final versions, so I suggest we give them the benefit of the doubt.
By the way, (ONe) is awesome.
Posted by: EDR37 at August 17, 2006 09:24 AM
Okay, am I the only one who didn't mind the song OR the throwback to the 80s? Why does everyone say it was 80s-esque like it's a bad thing? I'd rather it sound like 80s music than music now, because back then, there was a lot of TALENT. Now, most music is complete and utter crap. I honestly think most bands nowadays try too hard to avoid that sort of influence and they come off as trite, arrogant, and just plain dumb.
I'm not sure if you guys noticed, but Dilana didn't HUMP the dancers. I'll admit that they were a bit much, in my opinion, but her dancing with them was mostly just regular rocking out. And also, they said themselves that as far as the grinding goes, it can be a preference thing, much like the bobblehead move. I understand why Gilby's comments seemed hypocritical last night, but I don't think it was as bad as everyone makes it sound.
Also, of COURSE it still sounded a bit rough around the edges. IT'S THE FIRST TIME THEY'VE PLAYED TOGETHER ONSTAGE IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE AND WITH ANY OF THE CONTESTANTS. Do you really think they rehearsed with them ahead of time? They had that one recording session but most likely, they didn't rehearse any more after that. They wouldn't be able to practice with the one they'd picked without giving away who had one the challenge, and they wouldn't have anywhere NEAR the time necessary to do it with everyone to try and keep the suspense while still practicing.
I agree about them being drowned out. I wish we'd gotten to hear more of their playing, but that could just be the sound. We all know that the sound hasn't exactly been great this year. And sometimes, like everyone who goes to taping says, the full effect of the performance is sometimes lost on television instead of live.
I don't think they did abysmal. They weren't completely ready to tour yet, but why ignore all the other factors that most likely effected the performance? There's no reason to make it seem like they've lost all their credibility or careers from ONE bad performance.
But of course, I have to agree with everyone about the song selection. "I Will Survive" as a stripped down song when it's supposed to be a powerhouse song? Even the houseband were clueless about what they were supposed to do with it! This can't possibly be ALL that's available in the catalog. Come on, some rock groups have to had agreed to give the rights for their music! Even if they didn't... there's got to be something else available. At least there was no Nirvana this week. I like Nirvana music (especially covers) but I was getting sick of hearing it week after week. Must be the end of the world, no Nirvana, no Stones, no The Who, and none of last years songs repeated. It's the end of the world as we know it. :p lol.

TIM BURTON + JOHNNY DEPP= SWEENEY TODD
For those of u who are fans of TIM BURTON (like me) or of JOHNNY DEPP, or better yet of both of them "TOGETHER":
They are making a new movie together, base on the musical Sweeney Todd, the murderer baber who kills the judge that arrested him... i'll be produced by DREAMWORK and WARNER BROS... and will be out in late 2007....

(This is my first post, so I have a lot of time to make up for!)
Okay... So, I'm reading through the posts. Sometimes I'm nodding in agreement, and sometimes I sit here with a quizzical look on my face when...
Someone ELSE thought the Ryan sounded like Adam Sandler!!! Ryan began to sing, he got through the first or second line and I burst out laughing. My husband gave me the WTF look and I said I can't get past Adam Sandler in "Wedding Singer". Thank you Shaina.
I've been watching this show since day one with INXS. I never miss an episode.
I SORELY miss Marty. I've been thinking about him this whole Supernova season. There's not one contestant on this show, so far, that I'd pay money to see. In fact, so far I won't even commit the CD money yet.
Thank GOD and all that is Holy (and Jason, Tommy and Gilby) for getting rid of Zayra FINALLY. I only wish that Patrice had gone with her.
Storm... Oh my. Such a beautiful girl, such an ugly version of an outdated tune. Usually we watch the show with the surround sound BLARING. This week, I turned the sound D-O-W-N.
After the first show, I had Lukas picked as "their boy". I think that if he can do what Jason wants with his voice, he'll be it.
Dilana scared me during the first show. That crazy crap dangling from her chin looked a little on the Freddy Kruger side and her insanity (for me) was a turn-off. Since then, she's grown on me somewhat. She's absolutely beautiful, hardware and all, but I don't know that I can sit through an entire show hearing her voice.
The rest? I just don't know. Hit and miss, ho and hum.
Mostly, this season, I tune in for my Dave fix. I also love the smack-down critcism that they're giving the contestants this year. (Can we say Storm? HAHA!!)
Thank you to Supernova for FINALLY showing me what it is that you're going to be about. I've been whining for a few weeks now. I'm looking forward to more of that.
You know, why don't you give Suzie and Jordis a call if you really feel a woman can front the band? For either of them, I'd already have my wallet open.
Dave, I'm also among those who are very sorry that the censors made you and Tommy put your clothes back on. Just when things were getting interesting...

I do not believe Dilana wrote the lyrics to that song. All the contestants were singing the same lyrics in the studio sessions, so it seems unlikely they would be assigned to sing one of their competitor's words (or willing to do so). In addition, Gilby's recent post on the Rockstar blog had them backing way off from the importance of the chosen lead being a good songwriter in addition to a good performer. I don't know if this was a cover for Dilana's lotion-and-thong debacle, but it sure seemed like it.
The worst of it is that that means someone was actually paid to write that dreck, or the three of them did it themselves. The mind reels. Gilby may want to reconsider his post if last night showed the alternative to picking a poor or mediocre songwriter to save their band.
Sorry, can't buy the "it was their first time" argument for last night, either. These guys have more than 60 years worth of rocking between them and some of them regularly do incredible jam sessions with other musicians. If they can't stand on a stage in front of millions of people with all the powers of editing at their command and make their debut look good, they need to stop right now and retire to their various ranches to raise goats. No excuse.

Very well said, Autonoe. They should have knocked this out of the park for their debut. Instead, we're all sick and nauseated at their pathetic attempt.
Grrrrrr!! I wanted to like their stuff so much. I'm still gonna watch the show, but my expectations for Supernova have been greatly diminished.
I hope Lukas rises like the Phoenix to show them how to make their dead music work.

If SN insisted on using the WooHoo songwriting clinic backtrack for their first "new song", they could have shelled out a couple of extra bucks to Josh and bought his version of it. It was the only version that made that WooHoo-fest a decent song.
SN-guys, here's a hint -- don't go on the forums tonight because that song was every kind of bad possible (and not in a good way.)
Posted by: t2 at August 17, 2006 10:31 AM
you know, with all that great talent in Supernova, why would they even need ROckstar? cheap publicity? I'll keep watching though cuz they're so bad they're good...
But, these are the best singers they can find? I don't think so, and I haven't thought so from day one. I think it's all too cheap and cheesy.

I am.
But in all seriousness....Sue, Kristen and I are promoting the HELL out of our TPC (ONe) NYC listening party. Even though we have a few "issues" with Capitol Records. But that's another story for another time!
Posted by: Robin (Peebs) at August 17, 2006 10:38 AM
I agree with Deb about Suzie. All season I've been thinking that if they wanted a female vocalist, she would be perfect. She's the perfect combination of talent and sex appeal. Dilana is a beautiful woman, yes, but she's awkward with her "dancing" and she has a very masculine vibe. Storm is a good singer, and obviously very beautiful, but there's something about her that I find fake and "put on." Patrice looks like she should be serving coffee in some bohemian coffee joint, not fronting a rock band.
Yep, Suzie McNeil is my choice. Too bad she's not an option for this band.
Oh, and, I also agree with everyone who was disappointed in the SN song. I thought that a few of the contestants wrote better melodies and lyrics than that monstrosity. I know Dave doesn't help them with their selections, but maybe he could help them write the tunes, for God's sake!

Hey guys,
In case everyone missed the memo...Supernova isn't Dave's band. He's just buds with the guys in it. There are sooo many people asking what the fuck is up with SN's music like Dave has some kind of input on that situation!
In my opinion we should back off a little bit and give SN a chance to find their grove. That was their very first performance together...lets cut them just a little slack people!
Happy almost weekend Dave and 67 fam...

Hey Dave,
I really hope that whoever pissed Butch Walker off apoligises until the cows come home because those boys need some help. What a bad song. I read on another forum that the song reminded them of Poison and I relistened to it and god dam if it didn't. They better hope that Lukas is the preformer many think he is because if thats the material, they sure are going to need him in order to get the songs over. Bring BUTCH BACK before the SN guys start to look to tardish, I just hope it is not to late. I think a rewatch of what they have said to the rockers over the month would be inorder in attempt not to make themselves look any more foolish.

You know what I just realized, that guy from the Smashing Pumpkins seems to be doing nothing. And, he likes to "invent" music that has never exsisted, so he might make a really great frontman for SuperCruemetalicca'n'roses. However, they would need the word Pumpkin in there somewhere.
Oh, well just a thought.

Dave - YOU have your finger on the pulse of today's music and can see it's evolution and future. Lukas has his finger on the pulse of today's music and can see it's evolution and future. Magni has his finger on the pulse of today's music and can see it's evolution and future. Storm has her finger on the pulse of today's music and can see it's evolution and future.
After last night's song debut I've come to the conclusion that Supernova DO NOT!!
Supernova need someone who has their finger on the pulse of today's music and can see it's evolution and future. They need gifted, intuitive songwriters and front-people, not cheesy 80's hair band throwbacks. It was just so BLAH!
Only someone like LUKAS, MAGNI or STORM can save Supernova - they need these contestants, not the other way around!

I totally disagree with the comment listed above. I thought the SuperNova track was great! Very: New York Dolls, T-Rex, Stones, rock n’roll! The song sounded great and Dilana did an outstanding job. I would like to see Magni front an original tune or possibly Lukas.

Dave and fellow disappointed viewers
Ok finally the entertainment has been sent home now what…. We are left with some performers that will reduce to One then we will have a bland band Supernova…( I hate that name) I wasn’t impressed with Gilby or Jasons riffs. I like the Who and Cream ,Deep Purple, and I understand what they are going for but I know if they really wanted to they could be more creative. Dave your way more creative then these guys .
Now Tommy has always been bad ass and can carry any sucky musician anyday that’s what good drummers do. All Im sayin is that was some generic bullshit and a waste of my time . I canceld plans to watch that crap . I have been waiting to hear what they all sound like since this program started and Im disappointed in myself for getting my hopes up that this would be a catchy band not a money machine . No wander song selection sucks because the band sucks too, Gilby needs to step up and stop playing like a rhythm guitar player,
Panic Channel kicks anything supernova could ever come up with, and we all know that. Sorry for the bitching , Im just disappointed with this show I could have been doing something productive …for now on Im not wasting anymore time watching that shit you call primetime television.its waste-of-time television.

Hi Dave! How are you doing, man? I just want to say that I enjoy your presence on the panel and you can be quite funny at times. Like the other night for instance when you said that Dilana's performance of "Cat's in the Cradle" was the best of the night. Now that was just funny. There really wasn't a best of the night because they were all meh. Granted there were different levels of meh, from the unmitigated horrendously meh-y meh of Toby to the almost slightly above average meh of Lukas. Then the aforementioned Dilana. I don't know what you see in her. Do you compare tattoos after the show? Does she make a great martini? What? I'm trying to understand, I really am.
My problem with Dilana is that, as a performer, she has shown no growth or vocal development. Her performance last night was the same as the week before and her vocals are the same. If I had to sit through more than 10 minutes of this in a concert setting, which I wouldn't but if I did, I'm sure self-preservation would kick in and I would go deaf. But that said, I don't think any of the other rockers would be much better. Who picked these guys anyway? The same person who picks the songs? Bah!
Zayra was the only fresh thing on that show and yes, she was too avante guard for SN but talentless she wasn't. And as you have said she will probably have a successful solo career, which is more than I can say for SN if they choose the wrong frontperson *coughDilanacough*. When I think of it, she should have been conscripted to be one of the dancers during SN's song. *sniff* I will miss Z.
And what was with those cheezy dancers anyway? May as well dress them in white go-go boots, hot pants, put them in a cage, and rename the show "Solid Gold" or "The Tommy and Cher Comedy Hour" I swear Gilby's hair looks more and more like Chers.
Anyway, just wanted to say how much I enjoy your input on the show. It is always interesting if not amusing. However, I do have one concern, all this Dilana love being thrown around, I wouldn't want it to be impacting negatively on any of the performers. After all, since it looks like she has already been crowned, a performer, say Patrice for instance, might wonder if there really is any point in trying any more. And then there is Dilana herself. How will she take it if they choose Magni instead? After all the love she's been given and the false sense of security to be then thrown under the wheels of a bus? Not good, Dave, not good. So please, could you stop the drooling and fawning, it is very unbecoming.

The new Supernova song was a let down for me. Maybe it was just Dilana (couldn't understand a thing she was saying) or the dancers/lightshow. Enjoyed Zayras performance though - that kicked ass! But what was with Magni and Patrice re-singing Lukas's songs? That was ackward.. and certainly boring for me. Lets get some of the original songs from the rockers on the show!

Zayra's spanish album kicks ass. If you haven't heard it, she *definetely* has talent, it's just a matter of the right market. I think she's been trying to hard to sound like Bjork due to the accent. Youtube actually has one of her music videos, much better than the trainwreck on SN.

WOW - Look at all these posts! Lots of strong emotions surrounding a TV show...
Let me start by saying that last night's elimination made me laugh harder than I have laughed in a long time. Maybe it was my husband's running commentary - I don't know - but there was lots of comedy gold.
Take Zayra's performance, for instance. Mind you, I like her. I think she's spunky and interesting with potential and talent... But I could NOT stop laughing during this last performance. The more "intense" she tried to get, the more ridiculous she appeared, IMO. It was too funny. Again, I still like her and wish her well.
As for the Supernova song, eh... it wasn't *that* bad. I thought it rocked and was catchy enough. (My husband, on the other hand thought it sucked and was horrible.) Honestly, it was basically what I expected. I never expected Supernova to reinvent the wheel or anything.
Dilana did a great job, IMO. She fronted them like a true pro. It will be cool to see the others get up as well, to get a real sense of who gels with them and who doesnt.
Count me in among the many who think that the dancers were CHEESE-O-RAMA and completely unnecessary. (And I love dancing!) But that was just lame, lame, lame. At least I got another good laugh out of it.
Well, I can't wait to see how it all shakes out.
Sue/Peebs... Thanks for organizing that listening party in NYC. How cool is that?! Things are kinda hellacious right now, but I'm going to try to be there.
Take care and be well, everyone!

Hi Dave,
So that was the big new song from Supernova. The song was okay, nothing new or groundbreaking and it did include every 80's cliche and the generic sound that almost worked in the 80's. It was Cheesy at best.
What I found most disturbing was how old the guys looked with dilana on stage with them. I can't get over it. I think it was more disturbing than her dated michael jackson kick. It's nice that the guys gave a 40 something woman the chance to audition for them, but the joke is over now. Let's move on.
Posted by: Jamie at August 17, 2006 12:45 PM
Jamie...
Dilana is 34... so stfu!!!
and it's getting as ridiculously cliche as paris' "that's so hot" phrase to hear that woman are too old/older at over 30 and men are not... so read a new book and get a new line!!!

I was waiting for Diyawna to slip up during the chorus and sing “don’t need nothin but a good time
After hearing that song last night:
Voivod: Ok who are you and what have you done with Jason.
Metallica: simultaneous projectile puking
Axl Rose: Gilby Who ?

I'm eagerly awaiting the episode where Dilana's story arc starts to come full circle and she gets smacked down from her perch. The material is there, the editors just haven't shown it. I'm guessing we have one more episode of her gratingly one-note vocal performances, accompanied by the band's gushing mash notes. Then there will be more webisode goodness highlighting the inverse relationship between her narrow skillset and oversize ego, culminating in a juicy smackdown. Then Lukas will blow the doors off with the amazing range he's hiding up his fingerless lace opera gloves (smart cookie) and Dilana will go down in flames, ignited by her oil-drenched thong. God, I hope that's what will happen.

Message to SN
PLEASE listen to the music buying public.
Do not continue on the path that you are going down.
You have now become a laughing stock and that is not because of the actions of any of the talented contestants, its because
Your Music Sucks.
Please have Ryan, Lukas or Magni write and rearrange your next songs. Bring us into the year 2007 rocking with a good songs and not some cheesy karaoke song with 1980's disco dancers. I hope you take advice from your viewing public as graciously as the contestants have taken your advice. A little humble pie goes along way.

All I can say is, right on to Patrice. You finally turned me into a fan last night with that beautifully coreographed "F.U." to Supernova. Never liked Celebrity Skin so much in my life.
And kudos to Magni too, for realizing that art is more important than sucking up, and for giving us your own version of an F.U. to Supernova, by singing the "song of our generation" more to your fellow artists than to Supernova.

Wow.. a lot of angry people! It's a tv show folks! I'm not a plant or deaf.. I just enjoy the program for what it is.. An hour of fun entertainment. I think the house band are the most interesting performers of the lot.. But I did like the general sound of the track.
Posted by: Shaun at August 17, 2006 01:19 PM
I must say I am dissapointed Zayra has left the show.. Yes, I know she's not right for the band.. but reality check here, Patrice is not going to be their lead singer either.. and Zayra is so much more interesting than Patrice to watch.. All of Patrice's performances seem to blend in with one another, and I don't think I'm the only one who thinks that.. Part of being a performer is to bring something interesting and different to the stage EACH time... otherwise... it just gets repetitive, predictable, and boring...
Would it kill Patrice to sing an actual slow song? Seriously.
And I think Zayra was amazing on elimination... that song is powerful.. and her performance gave me goose bumps..

I want to agree with the many posts noting the "ASS-ness" of the Supernova track. If T.Lee was so hot on Lukas' version as he said during the Week 6 songwriting clinic, why didn't Supernova use it? It was far superior to the fromage we heard and promptly forgot last night. Like many have said, I can't get Lukas' version out of my mind, especially the "stop talking" whisper over the bridge. Are the SN guys too vested in their contributions (or Butch's) to allow creative input by the contestants? I'm curious to see what damage control emerges in the blogosphere.

Dave is a class guy. SN are friends of his he won't diss them.

btw nice t-shirts over at thepanicchannel.com
"left to lose" "said you'd be" - killer tracks

I'm curious - did Dilana get to sing with the band on the basis of her vocal interpretation of it, or for the songwriting clinic? Did the version that we heard last night have Dilana's artistic stamp on it, other than vocally? That would explain a lot.

Magni var awsome when he took Creep...it shows that he is vocally so much better than Lukas, I liked the stage performance and how much emotin he showed on stage. The text...I dont belong here...was relevant because I dont know what the X he was doing in the bottom three. Toby, Storm and Ryan should have been there instead. Folks...dont forget to vote so this wont happend again

Hey Dave
Saw the Panic Channel on Jay Leno the other day. I am a very huge Jane's fan and was not expecting, well you know. I must admit , I was excitingly suprised. You guys fuckin rock. Unfuckin believable. Way to go Dave. Also, I think Dilana is a fantastic vocalist, but when she sang with Supernova, I forgot what the show was called. Rockstar Sash Jordan or Rockstar Joan Jett came to mind. My opinion.

Wow,Wow,Wow I am shocked by the vitriol. The song was fine it was a little Crueish but it was a good ol dirty rock song.It maybe didn't sound that way people wanted because Dilana sang it a certain way which is how it's supposed to sound but she's not an alternative rock singer or much of an emotional one. She's a good stage performer and does a good show.Period
I think the problem is I see a lot of Lukas fans here. You know what they haven't even showcased him much. They did with Creep and a couple of times early but they haven't let him really even shine yet so what's the big deal?
Well for what it's worth from reading different boards 1.People who are Lukas fans know how good his original stuff is and they didn't like Thong Song from the writing clinic.2 They think Lukas was dissed because Dilana got the first song (not me though)3.Ryan has got 2 encores and Lukas has only 1 that really pisses off some people(not me though).4.Lukas fans don't think Dilana has an exceptional voice yet she never gets called on whereas Lukas is always getting railed for his.5.You editted the show to show Lukas often looking a bit disappointed during the last show as if he was defeated.
So I can see the whole Lukas run run thing from his fans but I asked a few people who don't know any of the "inside" stuff who are casual watchers and they all liked the song and Dilana.
I think sometimes people are forgetting the reality aspect to this show. The show has to have ups and downs and conflict and surprises to make it interesting. The winner will be the right person for the job.The album will be good.SN will tour successfully.Bank on it.

What's up Sexies~
Dave...do you really read all 200 or something of these posts? I know you read everything here but when it gets like this...do you still really read all of it? I still love you either way.
Anyway, I'm not really gonna get into all this SN stuff except that I'm kinda bumbed We have to continue seeing Patrice Toby and STORM for the next couple of weeks. At least Z was entertaining and amusing. We knew that she wasn't SN material girl but I kind of took her performances as the opener for who you really come to see. I'm gonna have to get to some domestic chores when storm and pat hit the stage fucking hate fake biatches...ohwell, I'm outie...
Kisses~

Well, the internet fans who feed off of board discussions, rumors, spoilers etc (I'm definitely one of those people) often have more passionate opinions bcause we've invested more in knowing everything about the show. Sometimes the passion displays itself as vitriolic and sometimes it's full of praise. The song was disappointing to me because the repetitiveness got boring after the 1st refrain and maybe I expect too much from any band featuring Jason Newsted. It was an early performance - maybe there is some better stuff waiting in the wings.
FWIW, I talk about the show with people at work and they were underwhelmed by the SN song, thought Dilana was just "OK" and mostly focused on not getting why the pre-recorded performance looked like it was filmed through cheesecloth. They didn't hate it as much as I did but weren't bowled over or anything.

They should use a collaborated song that came from the actual "band". Isn't that what they are trying to look for, a new band member? Seriously, at least JD Fortune wrote the first single and INXS - a band with years and years of talent - really, sincerely believed in the guy.
It warms my heart to think of it. And isn't there a movie coming out about INXS Michael Hutchince. INXS will be getting PR again. Tommy should get it together and start some controversy, maybe start rolling in from the ceiling in a rotating drums cage? And making the lead singer a Pammie looky-loo. Now that would be awesome. I've seen her do Love Shack with the B-52s...

All I'm saying is that if Lukas had sung the exact same song even with the whole consticted vocals thing I can guarantee you it wouldn't have gotten ripped like it has been.

I call bullshit on that, because that song would have sucked regardless of who the singer was, and people know what music they like & don't like. I'm a Lukas fan, and I can guarantee I still would have hated the song even with him singing, unless it had been his lyrics and arrangement.

I wish I could say I'm lovin' Supernova. I'm not. Panic Channel gets my money and time any day of the week. Seriously Dave, if you weren't on that show... I doubt I'd watch. Ah well.

Wrong I hated the song not the singer.

Whoever drew a parallel between Ryan and Adam Sandler's voice is dead on. I was trying to peg who his bizarre accent (which rivals Zayra's in being totally distracting!) makes him sound like, and I think that's it. I'm all for original, stylized vocals, but not when they make the singer sound like he/she requires speech therapy. And the forever furrowed brow...ugh. Now I'm just being mean. Sorry.
I guess I just think Ryan is too intense, or trying to be too intense, for Supernova. Toby *could* work--he kind of reminds of what would happen if David Beckham were to take up rock, though. Magni has talent, but he's kind of a yawn--not exciting to look at either (again, shallow, I know). Storm does Storm very well. She's obviously talented, but a little theatrical, and not always in a rockin' way. Dilana and Lukas, the likely contenders for the final two spots in my mind. Man, we're going to town today.

BWAHAHA
saw this on rockband:
"Supernova needs a good songwriter. Based on last night, a unique voice isn't enough. I hope they'll do more songwriting clinics - they need some fresh input. 2 weeks ago, Patrice wrote the most interesting melody & Lukas came up with the most interesting/modern sound. Someone lock those two in a room and see if they produce a genius baby that makes the most of SN's potential. Or just a Frankenstein with a fivehead & pigtails."
scary but true!!!
