Playboy Recap/RS:SN
Wow! I actually have a day off today! What to do? Order in and watch movies? Go to the gym? Go see Pirates? I'm not sure I remember how to do this. Yesterday at the Playboy Mansion, all of us in The Panic Channel had a really amazing time. The Tom Leykis Show was a lot of fun. He was totally cool and didn't ask me ANYTHING personal. I knew there was a reason I have been a listener for over ten years. Now when you hear Playboy Party you think decadence and celebrities and naked girls, etc., but that is only when it's a Heff thrown party. Yesterday's soiree was more of a contest winner and radio related thing, but it was still fun. We played three songs, Left To Lose, Teahouse of the Spirits and Said You'd Be flanked by a couple of face to face interviews with Tom. Even though it was a radio sponsored event, I still got a chance to hang with Heff and his Girls Next Door for a few minutes. That guy still appears at everything Playboy related. He is a total sweetheart and couldn't be a more gracious host. Thanx to Chase for archiving the experience for us. The file can be found here. As always, it'll show up in your iPod if you are subscribed to our Podcasts on iTunes. Incidentally, The Panic Channel's debut album (ONe) comes out in like 3 or 4 days. Tuesday, August 15th.
On to Rockstar stuff. Tomorrow we tape another Tuesday performance show. This time the remaining singers will be doing "stripped down" versions of their songs. Not totally acoustic, but pulled back arrangements that will really help highlight their voices. Some, like Ryan, Dilana and Magni, don't really need a day like this as they have already taken it upon themselves to do raw performances. Lukas could really benefit from a stripped down song as he has yet to really be simple and direct with a vocal. His version of Creep was amazing and was the closest thing to stripped, but tomorrow (Tuesday) he will have even less rock power behind him from the House Band. One of the contestants will even be doing an original song. Smart move. It is definitely time for song writing chops to come into play on the main stage. This season is almost half over with only eight remaining. It is going by SO fast! It seems that some viewers tend to forget that this is an audition process. I just want to remind every one of that. The truth is that most of these singers perform better than most live working bands out there. Better pitch, more consistency and even better showmanship in most cases. I can't tell you how many times I have seen some of my favorite bands sound like absolute garbage. So when you hear us on the couch being harsh or judgmental, remember that we are only helping fine tune these guys and girls. In fact, if anything, we are getting them ready for the onslaught of media twists that many of them will certainly face, more than anything else. The time is now to develop the thick skin and well, we are trying to help them build emotional calluses in addition to rating their performances. I suppose that what Supernova is looking for more than anything is the "X" factor we always hear about. The singer that not only sings well, but is compelling no matter the circumstances. I remember seeing Axl one night after having just gotten over losing his voice. He sounded sketchy, but man, could he put on a show. I would watch him like that over a perfect sounding Hootie any day!

Well, Dave, I know that we are looking forward to the competition really heating up now! Acoustic? Will you be playing???
Any talk of Rockstar for next summer?
Love this concept....
Always,
me

That bum tingle is increasing...only a few more days until One!!!
Tuesdays and Wednesday have fast become my favourite days of the week and honestly one hour each of RS:SN isn't enough. It's such a great vibe this year, pure rock, pure entertainment. Love love L.O.V.E. it!
Stripped down and scaled back. Can't wait.
So tell me (us) lovely one, when are YOU taking the stage with those that remain? It's about time, I do believe.
Posted by: Cat at August 12, 2006 12:09 PM
Dave...Day off? How about an impromptu SRL? or, maybe even fire up an all new CFR?
love,
jezzi(a girl can ask)
Posted by: jezebel at August 12, 2006 12:14 PM
I agree with Jezz, a little sit in the studio woth Billy tonight would be nice. CFR is still great. I love love love Billy to pieces but he's missing something w/o you!
I listened to the show live yesterday (on livestream) and yea that Tom guy kept the interview cool. I was waiting for the shoe to drop.
Well enjoy your free day. You may not have another one for quite a while!

Dave -Hope you enjoy your day off.
Just use the time to chill and decompress!
I've rewatched TPC's Leno performance on youtube. TPC sounds AMAZING!!
And now I can't wait for more!!

Can't wait for the stripped down performances. I think Lukas will continue to surprise, he really can do it all. I have just been listening to the opening of the Beyblade cartoon that he sings, and even it ROCKS!
Have to listen to the PB gig now, sounds like it was a good time all around.

Hey,Hey - That loooked like a wild ride in here yesteday.
You guys all took a huge bite out of that scum blogger..
That was so Ozzy Osbourne of you all!!(hahah)

Speaking of stripped down, was wondering if you would wear a vest or something sleeveless for us. Don't mean to turn you into a sex object- hope you are not offended. You are admired by a huge group of Rockstar fans. Hoping you will play guitar onstage during a Lukas performance, that would be a dream!
Posted by: Kut at August 12, 2006 01:28 PM
wow...I am a fan too, but geeez you guys, give Dave at least one day-off...
Posted by: kelly at August 12, 2006 02:05 PM
I can't wait for that damn album on tuesday. As far as Rockstar goes, didn't you say you guys were going to have some celebrity judges like Rob Zombie and Slash come by. Just curious if that was still going to happen.
Posted by: Shane at August 12, 2006 02:10 PM
Way to go Dave!
1st off, yes, order in, watch movies, take it easy. You deserve to indulge in guilty pleasures (i.e. not doing shit!) every now and then. WE need you well rested as we are looking forward to the new realease and the following tour. I don't see you scheduled around New Orleans, so I guess I see travel in my future.
2ndly, we (most of us anyway) understand the comments to the contestents. I can't believe there would be one aspiring musician out there that would not like to receive advice from you guys even if the pride caught a lil blow. Hey ya'll are living it, and there is no better instructor than experience.
Thanks again for staying close to your fans, giving it to us straight, and most of all for being true to this cause. IMHO, you are putting Rock back out here where it should be - the forefront. Whether it's via music, the internet, radio, tv, etc. you are true to us and we LOVE YOU for it! I've only been a member of the asylum for a few weeks now, but I'll tell you, I have learned Some Stuff! ~ and I thought I was pretty knowledgable already! :) :)
P.S. Must be nice having the Rumplestilksin thing going on! ...SWEET
Keep on Rockin' in the Free World...

oops...I didn't want him to WORK...the SRL show is done from his bed, isn't it..at least that's what the picture has led me to believe, and that my fantasies reinforce..haha
Dave, go back to bed!!
love

LOVE Rockstar . . . as a 44-year-old woman with big hair and a wailing voice, I guess it's just fun to watch and wonder WHAT IF . . . although things have worked out pretty fab being a mom (to the cutest 4-year-old girl EVER - She digs Rockstar, which I Tivo and edit for her! Thinks you're pretty! :) and an English teacher. (In fact, your grammar and spelling are great, and I always wonder if you have an editor or you just "get it" - a difficult thing that not everyone does . . . or maybe even should?)
It's great that you're toughening up the vocalists. You know, if you play guitar and someone says you're out of tune or something, you turn a knob and no big deal. Same thing with most instrumental correction. BUT a vocalist . . . God, it's so personal because it comes FROM you, and it's hard NOT to take it personally . . . even though ya gotta be able to take it, process it, and improve. (Something the loathesome JILL could never do! Au revoir, bee-yatch!) So stay tough on them!
Anyway, thanks for a fun show and a cool blog.

Hey Dave, I can't wait for the next epp of rockstar! And I too think it is a good idea to strip down the songs, that way it can really showcase someones voice. Or on the other hand break them in half. Like you said befor Supernova needs a kick-ass frontman or woman!! After all, this is the most importent choice the band will make. As for me, I love Dilana!
Posted by: Jess at August 12, 2006 03:50 PM
Dave, when you get a chance try and see "The Night Listener" with Robin Williams. It's a great psychological thriller!
Kut, I have been asking Dave to do a performance with Lukas too. As far as the X factor goes, LUKAS HAS THE XXX FACTOR, AND THEN SOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Linda at August 12, 2006 03:55 PM
Hey Dave Tivoed the Leno show I like the new stuff Steve is pretty dope I like his style. He fits in nicely.
I wish you wouldn't be giving us all clues like the "it" factor though man.LOL!I think I know who has the "it" factor it might be the auditioner that already has recorded songs like Playboy,Grip,Lonely Ones and Bored & Gorgeous that are better than most of the crap on the radio today.
I could be wrong though I hear that the constipated kidney stone passing rocker is coming back in style any day now.HaHa!

Hi Dave!
Had a day off yesterday, neat to kind of kick back
and enjoy sunlight!
re: Pirates--fun while Johnny Depp was on screen
but did get a little long in parts. Some of the
special effects and make-up pretty cool. Could
have been condensed a little better, though.
East Coast actually had pirates long ago, strong
sea-faring traditions here--piracy paid better
than legitimate work!
Keep well--hug, a.wolf--ps saw leno, your guitar
and Stephen's drums...okay with me!

I was in Target buying diapers yesterday and right across the isle was the sign for the new cds coming and there was The Panic Channel cover...right there in Target (: I was all excited and told the Target worker that those were my boys...like they are my freakin kids or something. It was an emotional moment ( :
Posted by: blacklace at August 12, 2006 07:52 PM
oh, and my kids love to watch Rockstar with me too. My daughter is four and loves Dilana...everytime she performs my daughter says "she rocks Mommy" Too cute but not as cute as my two year old son trying to say "Dave Navarro" That's priceless (:

Dave,
What's with the not so impressive chicks? Do you really need some (Jenna) that has been railroaded by every dick in LA and LV? Get a hold of yourself anc grow up.
Posted by: jack at August 12, 2006 09:31 PM
Okay then, it seems we're going to be getting into some more controversy here.
Missy, I can't remember where I saw it, I think it was on Lukas's myspace, but Jordis said vote for Lukas. Right on Jordis!!!!
Posted by: Linda at August 12, 2006 09:45 PM
BTW Jack, my guess would be that Dave's had as many women as Jenna has had men. He just doesn't get paid for it. At least not that I've ever heard of.

Arrghh, that's how I want to perform!
Posted by: Jem at August 12, 2006 11:31 PM
You guys were fucking awesome. That's the first time I heard Panic Channel play. Today, when I was listening to sirius though I wondered if panic channel would get a little lost though. They were playing a song by panic in the disco and kept referring to the group as panic. Hopefully they'll start differentiating soon. OK. You can tell I'm a copy editor that I'm complaining about names being too similar. Well, anyway, you guys were great, hope you enjoyed your day off. You seem to be extremely overworked. And, as for the stripped down performances: I don't think they should force them. If the candidates don't do it themselves, they should be out of the running. Supernova, especially with Tommy Lee, needs a leader not afraid to take chances. Lukas is great, but he's kind of pompous and doesn't take direction well. He's also afraid to take chances. This is not the right band for him.
Posted by: Melissa S. at August 13, 2006 12:13 AM
Season - The Panic Channel hasn't posted any dates yet, but I am sure they will as soon as they have them...and I am in the Sacramento suburbs.

Uhmmm, Good Morning Dave (since it's 7am here).
Hope you enjoyed your day off.
Let us know what you finallly settled on to pass your leisure time...Oh, and please don't hold back by making it rated PG only!
We'd love to hear it "ALL".
We're all adults here. We can take it. (wink, wink) :)
Posted by: Joanna (from Toronto) at August 13, 2006 04:15 AM
Hi Dave,
I can't wait to hear how things go on the
SN set today.
I predict that with the stripped down
versions of the songs, Magni will do well
but will be predictably safe. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz .
(like Sharon Lois and Brahm)
Ryan and Storm, can deliver it and will do well today. So they will probably come out on top.
But, I think the big surprise dejour with the stripped down song version will be Lukas.
....Maybe next week, SN can try a Stiv Bators vibe to kick the energy back up a bit :)
Enjoy your day-Luv ya.

2 more days 'til the (ONE)!
and looking forward to who does the original on SN!
