Head To Hollywood SG/TPC Event: 9/6/06

Wednesday, September 6th at The Dragonfly in Los Angeles: The Panic Channel will be doing an acoustic performance. The Suicide Girls are hosting a charity event that night and what better charitable pairing is there than The Panic Channel and The Suicide Girls? None, I say. Proceeds to benefit Head To Hollywood: A non-profit program of the Pituitary Network Association that provides comfort and escape to survivors of cancerous and non-cancerous brain tumors.

Chances are good that I will be doing another Spread Radio Live today at some point. Look for the usual indicators that I am live, such as the spreadradiolive name and "ON AIR" icon in your AIM buddy list, a post here on 6767 or a MySpace bulletin.

Oh yeah, I am hosting a party tomorrow night at Pure Nightclub in Las Vegas, located at Ceasars Palace. What happens there, BETTER stay there!!!

Our Position Has Been Compromised

So I watched it all back. All I can say is, I stand behind everything I said. Dilana was awesome! So was Lukas and Ryan. My choice for the bottom three... Toby, Storm and Magni. There. I said it. Unapologetic. That's just what I think! As for "what's with all the Dilana love?" Nothing. She got torn apart more than any other performer on the show for her off stage behavior. On stage, however, I have no problem with her. I don't pick apart her songwriting skills, or anyone's for that matter, because that is not part of my job. Tonight on "Mother, Mother" she seriously kicked ass while rocking the Flying V, Zombie-like hair and banging her head on the mic... Right up my alley! Dirty, nasty and unafraid. I said it was the best in two seasons. Maybe THAT was a little enthusiastic, but I honestly felt that way at the time, and still do come to think of it. If you keep asking me why I liked it, I'll keep answering and then I'll get shit for writing about her more! HAHAHAHAHA... As for the voting issue. This is MY site. It is not an offshoot of MSN. You got a problem with voting? Take it there. Write to them. I host this, pay for it and update it myself. As I said before... I don't know what the problem is. I'll know tomorrow and maybe I'll have an update about it. Also, I am so tired of all the conspiracy talk, that I am just going to say... Yes. It's all a conspiracy. All your worst fears are true. We are trying to control you and the world at large. It's all a ploy to learn how to manipulate votes. Phase one: Florida re-count. Phase two: Rockstar: Supernova. And the final phase... The 2008 Presidential Elections. Mark Burnett, Tommy Lee and I have started a secret covert black ops campaign to rig 2008 and putting our choice of who wins Rockstar is all a part of our master plan. As I write this, there are secret meetings taking place at The Pentagon to determine the directives that will position our choice for Supernova's lead singer. Once in place, he or she will subliminally suggest to the public which Presidential candidate to vote for via the lyrical content of the upcoming Supernova album.

Start It Over Here

Here is a new thread so I can keep up with you guys! I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH MSN!!! Don't know what to tell ya! I'll know more when I get to work tomorrow about the voting fiasco. In the meantime, rant and rave all you want here... I haven't seen the show back yet but it sounds as though it is much worse sounding on TV than it was in the studio. I'll confirm or deny in the morning.

Performances Tonight!

Damn there are some funny rumors around regarding the show. First of all, I don't know who Janet Charlton is, but I do know who she isn't. She aint no Perez Hilton, that's for sure. At least with Perez, you get humor and the rumors are at least based in SOME fact. He leaves it up to the reader to do the dance between the two. As for Janet, she just kind of sees what sticks. Well, with Rockstar, she doesn't have a clue as to what she is talking about. If she has an inside source... Name it! Come on! I dare you! Name it! If you don't know what I am talking about... She has claimed that she knows who the winner is. Trust me... Nobody knows until it's over. In fact, if there is one thing I CAN share, it's that Supernova has yet to be on the same page with each other in terms of favorites and they are waiting to see if their ideas line up in the coming weeks based on the remaining performances. Very diplomatic and democratic style. As for the stuff about Storm being edged out through our comments... That is just stupid. Don't forget that no matter what happens, the band can throw out whoever they want for whatever reason they want. They can also save whoever they want. Hell, they don't even need reasons! It is true that the public vote shifts the game in a huge way and that Supernova considers the results every week, but there is no reason for a conspiracy! Why would anyone try to conspire something that they ultimately control anyway? Just doesn't make sense. These guys are busy writing and rehearsing, not to mention that Tommy is still doing Crue stuff on our days off. They don't have time to come up with a "master plan". The remaining six are all good and tomorrow's elimination is bound to be heart-breaking for some! Each singer has a pretty solid fan base at this point. Tonight is the night, if ever there was one, to VOTE!!! I can't wait to see what kind of shit I get on this blog after the show. Since I am already at the tapings, my game has become reading all of your thoughts after each show airs.

Remember: "The views and opinions expressed in this page and on the couch are strictly those of the page author. The contents of this page have not been reviewed or approved by CBS, MBP or Supernova. Awwww hell yeah!"

SRL Today

Yesterday's show was a lot of drama, fun and great performances. This episode might have the most solid set of performances yet. There really isn't much room for criticism anymore. They are all good at this point and it is just a matter of who the public pulls for so that Supernova can make their final decision. Yeah, we covered a little more of the drama at the top of the show, but I can tell you that the panel has already moved beyond it. I am glad Dilana was able to learn a hard lesson, but in the same breath, I can't think of a lead singer worth his weight in rock, that hasn't said some really stupid shit in the press at one time or another. The same certainly goes for me and Tommy! It happens all the time, just not on prime-time network television. So, having said that... We are over it. It is back to the competition at hand. Finding these guys the best singer for their band. At this point, it is up to you to vote and decide who the final four will be. Someone is gone on Wednesday and someone is gone on the following Wednesday... Unless, of course, there is another dreaded double elimination.

Later today, I will be doing another Spread Radio Live from my house. Look for the usual indicators that I am live, such as the spreadradiolive name and "ON AIR" icon in your AIM buddy list, a post here on 6767 or a MySpace bulletin.

Sunday Taping

Three more weeks left of Rockstar: Supernova. Someone goes home this week, next week and then we will be down to our final four and that's it! Everyone left is talented and strong as a vocalist, so it's going to be an intense couple of weeks full of twists and turns. As it stands, I can pretty much imagine several of the remaining contestants taking this job, but of course, I have my favorites. It's weird, because even though I have an idea of who I'd like to see win this thing, I'd also like to see it go to a totally unexpected contestant, if only to fulfill some sort of selfish need for dramatic flair. We are taping the show for Tuesday today and from what I understand, the songs that they will be doing are viewer's choice. I know, they are songs that we have heard before, but there is the added dimension of someone potentially getting a song that they are not comfortable with. Remember, this week, regardless of what happens, half of the cast will be in the bottom three. I guess we will see just how bad Dilana's comments hurt her in the polls. My prediction? Storm, Ryan and Toby. Disagree? Then VOTE! One thing I will say about Dilana that she has going for her is the fact that people either love her or hate her. The fact that she has THAT profound of an effect on people in my opinion is a strength. Of the two bands I have worked with, both of my lead singers have conjured similar reactions from the public. It's like they say, better to have them hate you than have them not care one way or the other. (I don't know why they say that, but they do.) Lukas, kind of gets the same reaction too. Ryan, Storm, Magni and Toby appear to be either loved or just considered, "good but not right for Supernova." I have never read any strong disdain for them on this blog, but I haven't really read anything about them anywhere else. It's enough for me to try to keep up with all of the comments here. I must admit, that with each week, I am starting to dig Ryan more and more. I'd like to see him go all the way too. Damn! Even I am flip flopping on this. Lukas, Ryan and Dilana? Top three? Tough to say. I do see Storm as doing well regardless of the outcome as she does have that solo artist vibe. TONIGHT: STORM LARGE. That just looks right on a marquee, as does TOBY RAND. I guess that for me, Lukas, Magni and Dilana feel more like lead singer, band member types. Ryan I can see it working for either way. This is all a bunch of "what ifs" anyway. The one thing I am absolutely certain about is that whatever happens, the five that don't make it have to get going immediately with their own careers if they are going to let this show give them a leg up. Every once in a while someone will ask me, "Whatever happened to Jordis?" The remaining six should start putting their exit strategy in place now. The public at large (not the die hard fans) tends to forget pretty quickly. As I told Patrice, get going on your own material yesterday! I don't know if that comment made it into the final show, but I meant it. Remember the outcry for Phil Ritchie? I haven't heard his name mentioned in a long while. I hope he is cranking it out with his band right now. Somehow, I'm pretty sure we will be hearing from Zayra. She has already become somewhat of a pop culture figure, appearing on Talk Soup, etc. Smart move. She wasted absolutely no time.

Saturday Update

Let me make this clear (ONe) last time. I have absolutely nothing to do with the voting. That is all Supernova. I don't even go home and call in or use the net to vote on my own. The opinions expressed on this site are simply my own. I am the one panel member who has the luxury of expressing his thoughts outside of the show, so I do. At the end of the day, however, it is their band and I in no way influence who they are going to choose or send home as is evident in some of my past incorrect predictions. In fact, my opinions are just as valid as yours, the only difference is that I make mine public due to my involvement on the show. My job is to run the couch and give an outsider's opinion, just as it was last year. So know that I am not giving anything away or paying more attention to someone so that the outcome could be predicted. Tommy, Jason and Gilby have to work with the winner, tour and start a new career with them. There is nothing I could do or say that would make them go a direction they don't want to go in. I know for a fact that they don't even know yet.

Just got home from Canada. We had the best time up there. It seems that a lot of people were upset about the lack of signings and photos that we were able to do. (Trust me, we are honored that some people even want us to do that.) I guess this is the best time to explain how and why it sometimes works that way. With photos and signings, when there are a lot of people waiting, it's kind of uncool to only do some and not others and we are usually being rushed off to another "scheduled thing" or as in after The Edge radio interview, directly to catch a flight. (In fact, that is why The Edge interview was so quick.) So, if I can't get to everybody, I don't feel right doing just a few. The only other times I can't do it is when I am in the middle of personal time. We appreciate everyone turning up and supporting us and if our inability to hang was offensive to some, I apologize, it really isn't personal or intentional. We absolutely adore our fans. We think of them as the heart and soul of The Panic Channel. Without them, we wouldn't even exist!

BTW: Spread Radio Live today.

Still in Toronto

Good morning from Toronto. We have another full day of press then we fly home to LA where I will actually have an entire day off to myself. I will more than likely do another Spread Radio Live show from my house tomorrow. As for the conspiracy theories on Rockstar, I find them very amusing and entertaining, but I can assure you that no such devices have been embedded in the show. There is so much work that goes into doing just one show with rehearsals, camera blocking, performances, song selection and all that there isn't even time to consider injecting a conspiracy. Frankly, we went through all this last season. I remember how pissed off so many people were because they were convinced that it was all rigged so that Mig would win. Like, people got really angry at me, the show and all of our producers. In fact, I even got hate mail and flamed over it quite a bit. So to those who are suggesting the same types of ideas this season, all I can say is... Settle down. This is all as real as it gets. I have no idea who is going to take this thing and I don't want to know. I enjoy finding out who is going home along with the live audience in the studio from week to week. On Sunday, I am going to try to say something about Dilana owning up to her mistakes before the performances, much like I posted here yesterday. As for her "range"... A lot of people are on me because they feel she has no range. I totally disagree, but even still, I can't help think about Lou Reed's range or even Mick Jagger's. Not a whole lot of range going on there either, however, Mick is arguably one of rock's most compelling front men. I, like you, have only heard two Supernova songs and it is hard for me to know exactly what it is they require vocally, but I do know that on the songs they have done, Dilana did very well vocally with hers and Toby killed it on his. I am personally looking forward to hearing Ryan and Lukas on a Supernova track. I was wrong last week about song selection. THIS is the week that they are doing songs selected by the online community votes. Perhaps we will find ourselves with better song choices and more enlightening performances as a result. At this point, all the remaining contestants are pretty strong and I have no idea who might go. My best guess would be either Toby or Storm, but only because I don't see them in the top three at any time soon unless they really pull off something special this week. The bottom three this week will be half of the cast no matter what. It is really heating up! I know that we keep asking for that incredible moment during a performance. Know that we don't expect a singer to be doing backflips throughout a show, we just want to know that the ability to pull it out when necessary is in them. As much as I would love to sit here and continue typing for another 20 minutes about stuff, I have to jump in the shower as Steve and I are going to do some acoustic stuff on Canadian morning TV and some radio on XM, followed by an interview at The Edge in Toronto. Traffic, The Panic Channel, weather, tips on making that holiday table center piece for a fraction of the cost and the latest breaking Canadian news.

Moving Right Along...

OK. We hammered Dilana pretty good the other night. I got into it with her about her comments and she caved quite a bit. I do, however, appreciate that she owned up to it all eventually and because of that I can forgive her. These kids don't live in the real world and they really have lost touch with the fact that anything really exists beyond the house and the show. The fact remains, she simply fucked up. At the end of the day, it's not really a big deal. I can't tell you how many times I have fucked up over the years. A story or article will come out that I did and I will cringe reading back my own words. We taught her a lesson. One I am sure she will never forget. For me, it's over and I think it is time to move on. Let's focus again on the singing and the talent onstage. The press clinic was just that. A clinic. It was there to learn from and I think nobody learned more than she did. Honestly, you think that Tommy has always contained himself in the press? Hahaha! You think I have? No way dude! In fact, I am currently in Toronto doing a press junket and I can almost promise you that I will say something stupid at some point! It just happens. I am not back peddling here I am simply saying that we should get over it and cut her a little slack. It's all part of the audition process. At the end of the day, Dilana is one of the strongest performers on the show and I am a huge fan of her talent.

Toronto

After today's taping, I am going to Toronto for a couple for days with Steve Isaacs for some Panic business. I'll check in when I get there and we can recap tonight's elimination show. After seeing it on TV last night, I thought Patrice wasn't as good as she sounded in the room live, but her song might save her. Tommy said he could make it work. If it's not her, I really have no idea who would go tonight. We are getting to that point where they are all pretty good at what they do and they don't really need all that much direction anymore. They are who they are. I'd say that out of all of them, Ryan has benefited the most from our comments. He has taken them and adjusted his performances while still remaining true to who he is. That, is the name of the game! Although Toby did try to go for it and step up his performance, watching it back, it felt a little forced to me. I don't know, at least he is willing to take chances and try out new stuff. I commend him for taking such risks in front of millions of viewers like that. It's not like he has a little club tour to try things out each night and see what works. He has to just go for it on national TV. Lukas actually came across less engaging on TV last night than I remember with a lot of back to the audience. Gilby had a great point about that. The funny thing is, that even on his worst night, he is still leaps and bounds beyond some of the other contestants. Someone asked about how I can ask the questions I ask without seeing the webisodes. Well, if you notice the recap packages that roll before I ask the singers my questions, you can see that I am only asking them about what I have seen. We see the recaps in the studio on a large screen. I will tell you, however, that after reading your comments, I went and watched the whole webisode with Dilana's press clinic. Um... Yeah. Wow! That was really intensely stupid of her. I hope I get a chance to hammer her a little about that. If not on the show, I will grab her backstage and say, "What the hell are you doing? You are gonna crucify yourself here!" You NEVER talk shit about your peers! "But Dave, what about the K-Fed comments you made on Kimmel?" Well, all I can say to that is... There are exceptions!

RS:SN

Back into Rockstar stuff: I have been reading a lot about Dilana's attitude here in the comments. I have not watched the reality episodes online as my job is to give an unbiased critique of the performances only. I have no idea what these guys are like when they aren't on the show. I told Jimmy Kimmel last night that I stay as far away as possible from the contestants so I can remain impartial. As for the SN guys, I am sure that what they have seen outside of the main show is a factor in determining who they choose as their front person. After this week, there will be only six contestants remaining. This week should be interesting as two of the hopefuls are doing original songs tonight and we will be hearing another original SN song with a new voice on it tomorrow. My personal prediction for this week is that Patrice will go home. She is OK, but not really Rockstar material. I also think that Toby might have one foot out the door too, but I can't be sure. He is definitely good, I just have yet to see him give that one performance that makes me go, "Wow! This guy is awesome!" I have to hand it to Ryan. When this thing started I thought, "Not a chance" with this guy, but it appears he is holding his own. I think he is by far the most evolved competitor we have seen so far. Stormy? She is hanging in there. I'm not even concerned about her until the last stages. I think that it will ultimately come down to Lukas, Dilana or Magni as our final three. Of those three it is hard to say, but I would personally narrow it down between Lukas and Dilana. Honestly, I wouldn't be mad at either one of them winning this thing. This is all just an outsider's perspective mind you, I have no extra insights as to what the guys are thinking. I stay out of that and I don't want to know. As with last year, it is more fun for me when the decisions are revealed live and I learn who is going home along with everybody else. Sure, I could pump the SN dudes for info, but that would make my job boring.

Carolla/Kimmel

Tomorrow morning, The Panic Channel will be appearing on The Adam Carolla show on 97.1FM in Los Angeles. I think we should be on around 8:30am PST. Later in the evening, we will be performing on The Jimmy Kimmel Show.

The last two Spread Radio Live shows are now in rotation.

Oh yeah, here is that Love Line show Steve and I did last week.

And here is the above mentioned Carolla show. Horrible mix on the song, but what can ya do?

New Thread

Hard for me to believe, but I am sitting back here in my dressing room getting ready for yet another performance show. These weeks tend to blend into each other and become kind of a smeared memory. I can hear the band rehearsing through the walls next door. I think today's song selections are viewer's choice, meaning they have been voted for online. Maybe we can satiate some of the viewers that have a problem with the songs on the show. I know, probably not! I haven't seen any of the singers perform yet, but I can't help but think that this is simply the "Patrice Goes Home" week. At this point, she would have to do backflips and have fireworks shoot out of her eyes to save herself.

Q: I hear Rock Star's season finale is September 13 (Perk's and my son's birthdays!!) Doesn't that mean possibly another double elimination...or are my math skills off?

I think that there will be a final 3 or 4 on the show's finale. Not sure yet, but a double elimination isn't really a guarantee.

Q: I read on an AOL news site that Rob Zombie will be joining you on the couch pretty soon. Can you confirm or deny the rumor?

That is an old story that they chose to run pretty much out of nowhere. Originally, we were to have guest panelists come up for an outsider's perspective, but the Supernova chemistry on the couch worked out so well, that we scrapped the idea... As cool as it would have been.

Wednesday, we will get a chance to hear another Supernova song with a different singer on it. I am just as curious as some of you are to hear what it will be like. After hearing a few of their songs, we will have a better understanding of what the Supernova sonic landscape will sound like.

The Return of Spread Radio Live

(Our Official SRL girl, KHZ's Raiana.) So I blew it. I forgot to get the Love Line show for a Podcast. Sorry guys. I will try to get a copy but it's not looking so good. Perhaps I can get a copy from the label. (Hahahaha, yeah... I'm sure they'll get right on that!) It was fun though. Steve and I just kinda kicked it and drank coffee and took calls... Some funny, some not so funny. You know, sex stuff. I just got Season One of The 4400 from Netflix. I have a question for anyone who has seen it. Do we get to see some alien stuff in this show? Cause I'm telling you, I'm into it... Kind of, but if I don't see a fuckin alien soon, I am going to have a real problem with this thing. "Ooooooh, they have magical powers now!" Fuck that! We want alien stuff!!! This thing better kick into gear. Last night I did an all new Spread Radio Live. I know... It's about time. Now that my life has settled into a routine with the show and the band, it'll be easier for me to do more shows. I forgot how much I love doing them. Free and no FCC regulations or commercials, I rocked a diverse playlist and took a lot of questions about The Panic Channel and Rockstar. For those of you new to the Internet radio show I run, check out the site. The station AIM Name is: spreadradiolive. When you see that name come up in your AIM list with the ON AIR Icon, that means we are live. You can IM comments and questions and I usually get to them pretty quick. Last night, a lot of stuff was talked about such as The Panic Channel, rumors, Rockstar's song selection process, the remaining singers and Supernova. I try to do a couple of 2 hour shows a week, but at the moment, I do not have a set schedule. I do send out MySpace bulletins when I am about to go live, so you can look for the AIM name, posts or the bulletins to figure out when I am live.

TPC on Love Line Tonight!

The Panic Channel's Dave and Steve on Love Line tonight. (10:00pm - 12:00am PST) Tune in or call in with questions while we tackle some of the hottest issues regarding sex, dating and love. Hell, I may even clean up a rumor that, much to my astonishment, hasn't gone away yet. I will do my best to Podcast this after the show.

WOW! This is definitely an all time record here on 6767! Over 300 comments under one post, and yes, I have read them all. First of all let me start off by saying that my job on the show, is to critique and give my opinions on the contestants that are auditioning, not on Supernova. It is their show and a search for their singer. Ultimately, the direction they want to go in is their choice too. On the Gilby thing, my understanding is that he objected to Jill's grinding on him, not that she was sexy. I didn't see the dancers doing that, so perhaps there is a difference there. I don't know I haven't spoken to him about it. "Those four" dancers seemed to be doing what they were hired for. Dancing. Gilby's comment to Jill appeared to be more along the lines of a female singer representing his band, not a commentary on sexy chicks in general. (I of course, have no problem with the sexy stuff as I made clear on that show a few weeks back. Jane's had dancers on the last tour and even actual strippers back in 97. They did their share of grinding, but then again, they weren't our lead singer. I do see his point and the difference.) As for giving Dilana the song to sing on, they made it clear that everyone would be doing a song in the coming weeks, so I disagree that they have "given" the competition away. She just happened to be first, based on her performance down at Pulse Studio. Now for the track. Obviously many people didn't like the new Supernova track. What can I tell ya? That is clearly the direction they have chosen to go with in this band.

Someone Is Going Home

Yeah, I know, last night's show was ... not the most spectacular display of rock we have ever seen. I don't pick the songs they get. Trust me, if I did, you'd know it. As for the whole Storm thing, she could have gone with the Cake version of I Will Survive and chose not to. Sure, it's the same song, but ultimately she opted for a less ironic version which to us, came off as really cheesy. I stand by my comments after seeing it on TV. Whatever, she is not going home today I am sure! My prediction for elimination? Patrice. Even though I don't know what planet Zayra is on, she did take a chance. Actually, on second thought, if it were my call, I'd put together a reel of Zayra's performances and cut her today, but send her with the reel directly to a Latin record label and say, "Here, take her... I don't know what you got here, but it's worth looking at. She's just not right for what WE are doing." Honestly, I might just cut them both right now, but as I always say, it isn't my call. I stay out of that decision making process. Tonight, we hear a Supernova song for the first time, featuring Jason, Tommy and Gilby with a yet to be named contestant having the honors. We finally get a chance to see what it is we are actually trying to do here. Find these guys a singer. Now that we are down to less contestants and the finale is drawing near, it's time to hear and see what this thing could be. I am looking forward to it as I haven't really heard an entire Supernova song with a contestant singing yet myself. I think that once we see what the boys are up to, it'll be much easier to understand the rest of the show, our comments and the choices that our remaining singers make from here on out. Next week, we are back to some more rock oriented music. As for tonight's encore... I'd give it to Ryan, Dilana or Lukas.

P.S. Just to set the record straight, I am currently not dating ANYONE.

The Panic Channel in 24 Hours - Rockstar

In 24 hours we commence with "Day (ONe)". The birthday of The Panic Channel's "(ONe)": 12 tales of fact and fiction. A rebirth in the age of information. Our love letter to the songstress, our raindrop-stained document of pain and euphoria. This is the Teahouse of the Spirits - a place where your bruises become your badges, your defects reflect your power. This is your invitation to ride with us - wherever The Channel may flow.

Day (ONe) is coming - Panic Agents, show your strength and put TPC in your MySpace Top Friends list, post TPC banner and video code on your pages, and spread the word with bulletins and posts. The Panic Channel would be nothing without the powerful support of YOU - our beloved Agents, and we thank you for helping us from the bottom of our hearts. Keep up the charge, for this is only the beginning - Day (ONe) approaches!

Rockstar: So Tuesday's stripped down show taping was, uh... Interesting. Really weird song choices, and everyone kind of did relatively well so there wasn't a whole lot to comment on although we tried our hardest. At this point in the game, they all kind of have something great about them while a couple have qualities that are not so great. I guess the real trick now is to get the Supernova guys to all agree on one performer. At this stage, I would have to say my personal favorite is Dilana, followed by Lukas. Dilana's voice just has more range and control, but then again, Lukas is totally an original dude and I really like what he does. Ryan has really impressed me over the past couple of weeks too, but I don't see him as The Rockstar type. Then again, he IS getting there each week. I guess Ryan just seems so moody with his persona and I picture more of a light hearted wild vibe fronting Supernova. Ryan would make a really good introverted, brooding, "hurt by the world" type of Rockstar a la Trent or Chris Martin. Lukas has that vibe too, but he also has the "let's fuck shit up" side to him. Toby, I think can sing very well, but I am still on the fence about him. I haven't seen THE performance out of him to help me have a clear opinion either way. Zayra? Well, you know how I feel about her. Definitely something there but not right for the band. She does have that thing that a good Rockstar should have... People either love her or hate her, but no matter how you slice it, they talk about her. Storm, for me is a tough one. When she gets the right song, she is amazing... But when she gets the wrong song, I can't even deal. She is super secure, sexy, strong and proud and that makes her undeniably rad, regardless. Confusing, isn't it? Patrice. Very cute and sings quite well but not that captivating. I still haven't seen a performance out of her that rivals her Radiohead bottom three choice. She was amazing on that, but it would suck if that kind of performance was a fluke and she can't bring that energy every time. Magni is great, but just kind of hovers in the middle for me... Great voice and a total consistant entertainer... But I have yet to say, "WOW!!!" to anything he has done.

The Panic Channel on Rockline

rockline.jpg

The Panic Channel will be the featured guests on the nationally syndicated radio show Rockline with host Bob Coburn Monday night August 14th at 8:30 PDT. For a station near you, and information regarding how to hear the Internet stream, go to Rockline Radio.com.

I am so used to getting up, pouring a cup of coffee and rocking an update over here. The thing is... I got nothing! So here is my Netflix recommendation list:

Cache: Winner of the Cannes Best Director Award, Michael Haneke's psychological thriller centers on wealthy French couple Georges (Daniel Auteuil) and Anne (Juliette Binoche), who begin receiving threatening videotapes and phone calls. Eventually, Georges realizes who the perpetrator is but refuses to tell Anne, causing a rift. Flashbacks of George's childhood reveal the mystery, a story that illuminates France's damaged relations with Algeria.

Dawn of the Dead: Documentaries: This companion disc to George Romero's classic zombie horror flick includes behind-the-scenes features meaty enough for even the most rabid fans. First and foremost is "The Dead Will Walk," an all-new documentary that includes interviews with original cast and crew members. Other highlights include filmmaker Roy Frumkes "Document of the Dead," which was filmed while the movie was being made, on-set home movies and a Monroeville Mall tour.

Shock Corridor: Ambitious reporter Johnny (Peter Breck) wants to win a Pulitzer Prize by solving a murder that was committed in an insane asylum and witnessed by only three inmates, from whom the police have been unable to extract anything about the case. With the help of a psychiatrist and his girlfriend, Johnny succeeds in getting committed to the asylum, where he tracks down the witnesses and is slowly driven insane himself. Samuel Fuller writes and directs.

Playboy Recap/RS:SN

Wow! I actually have a day off today! What to do? Order in and watch movies? Go to the gym? Go see Pirates? I'm not sure I remember how to do this. Yesterday at the Playboy Mansion, all of us in The Panic Channel had a really amazing time. The Tom Leykis Show was a lot of fun. He was totally cool and didn't ask me ANYTHING personal. I knew there was a reason I have been a listener for over ten years. Now when you hear Playboy Party you think decadence and celebrities and naked girls, etc., but that is only when it's a Heff thrown party. Yesterday's soiree was more of a contest winner and radio related thing, but it was still fun. We played three songs, Left To Lose, Teahouse of the Spirits and Said You'd Be flanked by a couple of face to face interviews with Tom. Even though it was a radio sponsored event, I still got a chance to hang with Heff and his Girls Next Door for a few minutes. That guy still appears at everything Playboy related. He is a total sweetheart and couldn't be a more gracious host. Thanx to Chase for archiving the experience for us. The file can be found here. As always, it'll show up in your iPod if you are subscribed to our Podcasts on iTunes. Incidentally, The Panic Channel's debut album (ONe) comes out in like 3 or 4 days. Tuesday, August 15th.

On to Rockstar stuff. Tomorrow we tape another Tuesday performance show. This time the remaining singers will be doing "stripped down" versions of their songs. Not totally acoustic, but pulled back arrangements that will really help highlight their voices. Some, like Ryan, Dilana and Magni, don't really need a day like this as they have already taken it upon themselves to do raw performances. Lukas could really benefit from a stripped down song as he has yet to really be simple and direct with a vocal. His version of Creep was amazing and was the closest thing to stripped, but tomorrow (Tuesday) he will have even less rock power behind him from the House Band. One of the contestants will even be doing an original song. Smart move. It is definitely time for song writing chops to come into play on the main stage. This season is almost half over with only eight remaining. It is going by SO fast! It seems that some viewers tend to forget that this is an audition process. I just want to remind every one of that. The truth is that most of these singers perform better than most live working bands out there. Better pitch, more consistency and even better showmanship in most cases. I can't tell you how many times I have seen some of my favorite bands sound like absolute garbage. So when you hear us on the couch being harsh or judgmental, remember that we are only helping fine tune these guys and girls. In fact, if anything, we are getting them ready for the onslaught of media twists that many of them will certainly face, more than anything else. The time is now to develop the thick skin and well, we are trying to help them build emotional calluses in addition to rating their performances. I suppose that what Supernova is looking for more than anything is the "X" factor we always hear about. The singer that not only sings well, but is compelling no matter the circumstances. I remember seeing Axl one night after having just gotten over losing his voice. He sounded sketchy, but man, could he put on a show. I would watch him like that over a perfect sounding Hootie any day!

More Radio

Today, The Panic Channel are playing at The Playboy Mansion for a live ON AIR performance on the Tom Leykis Show. (97.1FM in LA) We should be on around 5:30pm PST. I will definitely try to rebroadcast the show when I get home in a Podcast or something. Anyone who has heard the Leykis Show can confirm that I am potentially walking into a firestorm, but fuck it... It'll be fun! Looks the old "cell phone cutting out" trick won't work as it is taking place from a remote studio sit down style. When we do phone in interviews, it's always easy to go, "What? Sorry man, I'm going through a tunnel! Wha.. ...at again?" Lots of cell phone tricks. Another favorite is the old "pretending to be on the phone" while out in public alone trick. This comes in handy when in line at a Starbucks and you can just tell someone is about to ask about your tattoos. "Did those hurt?" "Sorry, I'm on the phone." Every once in a while your cover gets blown when a call comes in and you have forgotten to turn off the ringer. Then you just look like a crazy person. All of my closest contacts are listed as someone else. When Steve Isaacs calls it comes in as President Bush (just to fuck with him). My manager Larissa comes in as Bono. However, when Bono calls, it still comes in as Bono. Somehow, that's still funny.

The Panic Channel on Leno Tonight

Well, for once I was half right. Jill AND Josh... On their way home! That only means one less week until the finale! For me, it's hard to imagine some of these obviously talented singers being in THIS band. I think that all of them absolutely have talent, but some of those talents could be better served somewhere else. Like at a Starbucks. (J/K) Seriously, Supernova needs that undeniable rock front person and I do believe that a woman could definitely do the job. Also, I try to keep in mind that last year, everyone was on about Jordis and Mig and the game quickly shifted mid season. As I see it, Magni, Dilana, Lukas, Storm and Toby all have a shot. My money is on the next few weeks to look like this elimination wise: Patrice, Zayra & Ryan (even though I personally loved the whole new Ryan vibe last night). The truth is, that out of all the elimination days, I have only been right 1/2 (when Jill and Josh were sent home) a day out of all of them, so what the hell do I know? I'm just there to run the couch, chime in with an outsider's perspective and move it along. I never saw the Josh thing coming today.

Thusrday August 10th, The Panic Channel will appear on The Tonight Show. Check here for local times and listings.

Wednesday Hatchet

Another early morning here in LA. I am just about to go over to CBS and watch Supernova throw down the hatchet again. My prediction? (which so far, has always been totally wrong every time...) I am going to have to go with Jill, even though her performance last night was one of her best. She has just been consistently wrong for the band in my opinion. As you know, I have no vote in the matter so I am always just as on the edge of my seat as the audience when they deliver the final word. Zayra? Well, I have been saying that she needs to go for weeks now, but every time I think it is going to be her, I am shocked by a different decision from the band. Either way, she is definitely more entertaining than Jill, even if it is for all the wrong reasons. Jill is clearly a better singer but Zayra is for sure more fun to watch. Oh yeah, sure, a lot of people out there are upset about it because they think she is around only because of her sexy outfits, but I'm telling you, she would be just as interesting to watch if she came out wearing a gunny sack. I have said it before and I stand by it... If Zayra got going on a solo career and did a really tripped out artsy record a la Peaches or Bjork, she could have something. Jill, on the other hand, does have a great voice and could more than likely excel doing something else too... Commercial work, her own project, whatever. The fact remains that whoever wins this thing has to front Tommy, Jason and Gilby. I only see a few possibilities for that role. As for the show last night and the option to do The Who song with Gilby, I was absolutely shocked that more singers didn't try to jump on that. A little insider info: Dilana claims she had never even heard that song before. I actually find that hard to believe, but if it is in fact true, it just goes to show you just how committed she is to take such a risk. Lukas? Well, he just destroyed it last night. I am glad to see him back on top with an entirely new side of his voice coming to the forefront. OK. If I don't get the hell outta here, I am gonna be late. Peace and love to all of you...

Chicago

(photo: Scott Harrison) Had a killer time last night at the Blender sessions at the Hard Rock Cafe in Chicago, benefiting the The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation. I'll check in when I get back to LA. Right now, I am late for my flight... In the meantime, here is a very nice story that ran today in the LA Times.

This is The Panic Channel live on Q101 in Chicago yesterday. (Well, it WAS live, originally...) As you'll hear, Steve Isaacs missed his flight... just like a true ROCKSTAR!!! If you have subscribed to the Podcasts, it should show up in your iPod.

Airports... Ughhhh!

6:47am... Sitting in the LA airport, waiting to get on board our flight to Chicago. It's way too early for this kind of thing. Today The Panic Channel has a day full of travel, acoustic radio shows, press and then finally our show this evening at The Hard Rock. We come home tomorrow morning so I can be back in time for Wednesday's elimination taping for Rockstar. After watching all of the performances yesterday, I have to say that I really have no idea who Supernova will be sending home. I'm usually wrong anyway. My best guess would be Jill or Zayra. It'll be interesting to say the least. I'd like to have the guys rip into a double or triple elimination, myself. Jill, Zayra, Josh... Later!!!!!! Thanx for playing. I know it sounds harsh, but, I mean, come on already! Let's get this thing heated up. I'm sure they can all do well on their own, but I just don't see either one of them fronting this band. Josh has a great voice, but not enough edge, Jill seems better suited as a solo artist and Zayra... She is just a total trip unto herself.

Rockstar Sunday

Sunday morning, kicking it in Cowell's dressing room again at CBS. Last night at Camp Freddy we had a blast! Robby Krieger, guitarist from The Doors, came up and played Roadhouse Blues with us and Scott Weiland on vocals. It was truly amazing to stand next to a member of one of my all time favorite bands. Robby played great too... He is still a kick ass guitarist... This guy wrote, "Light My Fire" for Christ's sake. He was rocking the SG and his tone was the perfect Roadhouse tone. A-Mazing!!! Steve Isaacs of The Panic Channel did The Cult's Sanctuary with Billy Duffy and AC/DC's Highway To Hell with Duffy and Slash. He killed it! When he broke into Highway, I was like, "Where did THIS guy come from?" I mean, he is the singer of MY band and I had no idea he was THAT METAL!!!!! Other highlights were Cypress Hill on Rock Superstar and a very special version of Paradise City with Slash. Warren DiMartini of Ratt came up and did Round and Round with Mark McGrath on vocals. Warren and I figured out all the little harmony solo bits and it was just insane! Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols came up and did Search and Destroy and The Clash's White Man In Hammersmith. Benji Madden also got in on some Clash with Should I Stay. It was a ridiculous night of rock and a lot of fun!!!

OK. Today on Rockstar's taping for Tuesday night's show. What to expect? I have NO idea! It is 10:30am as I write this and I am fried. I hear them rehearsing All The Young Dudes through the wall right now.

Shows Etc...

I loved all your responses to the "Fun With The Media" post. It was kind of an inside look into the insanity of tabloid journalism. Funny stuff. Of course, I stray away from highlighting the personal stories they print, but when the subject matter is so ridiculous, I have to comment out of a sheer need for humor and a literary roll of the eyes. I'm thinking that I should make this a regular thing, here at 6767.com.

Tonight my cover band, Camp Freddy, is playing the LA House of Blues for a party. As always, I am uninformed until the last minute about stuff like this, but I have come to learn that it is a private event. Sorry guys. Our guests tonight include Slash, Steve Isaacs, Steve Jones, Warren DiMartini, Mark McGrath, Benji Madden, Cypress Hill, Billy Duffy, Mickey Einzinger and of course the core Camp Freddy Band, me, Billy Morrison, Matt Sorum, Chris Chaney, Scott Weiland and Donovan Leitch. It'll be a killer show and even more importantly, a killer time.

10 Days remaining until the official release of The Panic Channel's debut album (ONe). Monday, August 7th, we will be playing a benefit show in Chicago for the Hard Rock Cafe Ambassadors of Rock Tour. Proceeds from ticket sales will be directly donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Tickets for the event are available through TicketWeb. Also, on Friday the 11th, we will be playing at the 97.1 Free FM Summer Splash 06. The show will be held at The Playboy Mansion... I aint mad at that!

Fun With The Media

A letter to my publicist from Life & Style:

Dear XXX,
In a story for our upcoming issue, we plan to report the following on your
client, Dave Navarro, based on the observations of cosmetologists and
plastic surgeons. The story ships to the printer today. Please respond with
any comments (or a no comment) ASAP.

"Dave Navarro may be getting Botox in his forehead and waxing his brows. We
also have an insider saying that he even wears eyeliner to walk his dogs. We
also include mention of his manicured nails, which are obvious."

Thanks, and best regards,

XXX XXXXXXXX
Executive Editor
Life & Style Weekly
201-XXX-XXXX ext. XXX

They asked for a comment, then refused to print it, so, here it is:

"Evidently, your insiders are useless. I have never walked our dogs, however, a little bump on the eyes would definitely make it a more dramatic event! As for the speculations on my grooming habits, you got that all wrong too. Is the week's entertainment news really THIS slow? Why don't you guys skip the insider fee and send a check to The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation?"

Good Morning!

Damn! Yesterday was one long ass day! Woke up at 5:00am, got ready and did a couple of radio interviews, then rolled over to the Rockstar set by 6:30am. I guess it is no big shock that Dana went home. After all was said and done, Jill did really well on the Heart song and Patrice is, well, just more rock. No big controversy there, although I would have sent the three of them packing! It's funny that Gilby and I are becoming the villains on the show. We just call it like we see it. Jason is more constructive and Tommy is so sincere that you can just read that guy's face and know what he is thinking. I think it is a way better balance this season on the couch than last season. In some ways, I was more invested in the singers last year, cause I had more of an emotional connection with them. This year, I am more invested in the Supernova guys and their band, so I really feel the need to have their interests be the priority. I was, however, shocked and amazed that Zayra didn't fall into the bottom three. I guess she is making great television and people are voting for her just to see what the next move is on her part... Or the next outfit!

After the taping, I headed over to Capitol and met up with Steve, Stephen and Chris for The Panic Channel press junket. We were there until 7:30pm answering questions like, "Where did you get the name?" "How did you guys meet?" "What does (ONe) mean?" over and over and over again. It was draining but it was fun to get into Panic mode again with those guys as our record comes out in 11 days. After all this time, we actually got to hold our finished album art in our hands. That was a really amazing moment. We recorded a few acoustic songs in the Capitol studio for a radio show and ultimately had a really great time. I was a useless zombie because I was so tired, but Steve, Stephen and Chris really helped carry me through it all. Thanx guys!

Later...?

I'm backstage at CBS waiting to get going on today's elimination show. My money is on Jill or Zayra to go, but you never know, it might be time for Josh to go into his Hootie phase and hit the road. After watching the show last night, I really think Patrice is in danger too. She just didn't sound so good on TV, plus she was super overshadowed by T Lee. In the studio when these guys are singing live, there is a lot of latitude in terms of sonic forgiveness. It always sounds better in the studio than it does on TV. The room sound, the live band and the PA all contribute to a better and fuller sounding performance. As for Zayra, we all know she is totally not right for the band, but I am starting to look forward to what the hell she is gonna do for each performance. It's almost like we get a ten car pile up on stage on a weekly basis. She is kind of like the comedic intermission entertainment.

After the show today, I am going over to Capitol for a press junket with The Panic Channel. It's gonna be a long day! Other updates: Camp Freddy at The House of Blues LA on Aug. 5th and The Panic Channel at The Hard Rock Chicago Aug. 7th.
