Later, Matt...

Well, when you're wrong you're wrong... Or at least, when I'm wrong... I am way wrong! I was absolutely certain that Chris would be out last night. In my defense, never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that Matt would choose to do a Duran Duran song to "save" himself! I still believe had he chosen almost ANYTHING else, Chris would have been packing his things. Frankly, I was less impressed with his Doors performance than I was with Matt's DD performance, but come on, at least play the right game. Matt basically brought a catcher's glove to a poker table. He had to go.

I have been having a lot of fun reading all the online press about the show. I am amazed by the fact that Reality Blogs and critics spend so much time trashing us. If you think about it, they spend way more time in Rockstarland than the average viewer does. They watch it, write about it, watch again, recap and then go on about how we are "too nice" or that we are whores. HAHAHAHA!!! (At least I am writing about something that I am actually doing.) As for the critics that call us whores, we aren't the ones getting paid to spend hours on something we don't enjoy! I mean, who is the real whore here? We love what we do. We are having a blast. Honestly, you would think that we are having auditions for cardiologists that haven't finished Med School to perform open heart surgery. I mean, lighten up a bit! This is just a group of guys that want to make a band. It is "entertainment" not art. A TV show. The art hopefully comes when they get in the studio, write, record and take it out on the road. As for being "too nice"... Well, the truth is that with Rock, you can't really teach it. It comes from the heart. Even if you suck, you can really mean it. So we try to give helpful criticisms when possible. With a pop show, you can say, "Change your hair, work with a song writer, get a stylist, take vocal lessons, etc..." I'm sure a lot of them are totally passionate about what they do, but in my opinion it's not the same. I find it to be more packaged and sellable than anything else, but hey, if it makes some people happy to listen to stuff like that, God bless them. With rock however, it's not about that. Lou Reed is an all time favorite of mine, but if he sang on a show like this as a young struggling artist and got butchered, we could have potentially lost out on his huge impact on rock culture. OK... Yeah, I know... He NEVER would have done that... I'm just saying.

The critics are not important. You'll just drive yourself mad if you take notice of what they say.

I don't usually watch much tv, but I am just watching this show for Jason Newtsed. Sorry Dave, I know this is YOUR site, but I have to say this. I feel really contented when I see Jason looking happy and having fun with his new project.
I hope the band is successful.

That Zayra is fucking lucky having Jason propose to her!!

I wish people could get past Duran Duran's "image" and actually listen to their music, because it's really good. Is it hard rock? No. Did Matt do a great job with it? Yes. And that should have counted for something. Can Phil sing his way out of a paper bag? No. That should have counted for something too. (Except for some inexplicable reason, SN praised his vocal ability! Were they listening? Geez.) I know you and the boys of SN need to maintain your rock credibility, but dissing a band that has sold millions of albums just because they don't fit into what you call "rock" is pretty sad. I love you Dave, I loved Jane's, I love Camp Freddy and I love Panic Channel, but I lost some respect for you last night. Or maybe it was just how you were edited, I don't know. Maybe the problem is, SN haven't defined what they are yet. They did say something about going in a glam rock direction. Can't get more glam than Duran, sorry. And Butch Walker as producer? Can't get much more pop. It's just a bunch of mixed messages so far.

Dave, I am so glad I found this site. The show is fantastic and I respect the way the contestants are treated with dignity. Ignore the critics. I am so grateful my grandson convinced me to watch it. Good luck.

Posted by: salsa at July 7, 2006 05:07 PM

Alright. My defense. First of all Kylie, Duran Duran altough a great pop group, does not fit into rock. ROCK is a whole diffferent beast. There are some of us that really get into the thunderous beat and the showmanship. I think this is what SN is all about. Duran Duran, as Dave said is ok for PRE-PACKAGE. This is not American Idol. Music has gone in a way different direction. Let me let someone write a song for me, comb my hair the right way, and look good on camera, done! Now, a rock singer has to get a contract first, pick an image that he/she thinks will fit in with today-not easy. This is what our dear DN is doing. Trying to help these singers since the market is too flooded with this fluff. DN, no worries, hun. You could be making a rocket ship and SOMEONE who is bored with their life would pick. There are millions of us who loved the show and I am so happy that you are trying. I commend you for doing what I always wanted to do. When MTV started going downhill and I heard what was on the radio I thought, "Oh no, something should be done to help creativity in music." You have done that-Kudos dear:) Luv the show, Luv ya,Db

Whew, after my implosion, wanna ask? SRL? DN?

my bedroom? DN? hee hee just kidding, sorta!?>!@!?@>@

Posted by: SweetMelis at July 7, 2006 05:31 PM

Danni, I think you missed my point, which was that it shouldn't have been about who did the song originally (Duran). It should have been about what the performer (Matt) did *with* the song. But SN made it clear that it was all about the song he chose, and based on their body language as shown on TV, they didn't even allow themselves to listen to Matt's performance of it.

:)i know allllabout when i'm wrong i am way wrong - please don't feel lonely you all - dave - carmen - chris....................

Posted by: a shellee marie vise :) at July 7, 2006 05:45 PM

I do get it Kylie. I just want you to understand someone else's point. For last years show that would have been fine. That is the kind of band INXS is. Ok= so maybe Matt should have performed a rap or a country tune? I mean, when you audition for a band, naturally, you try to be in the vibe of the band's personna. Crue, Metallica, and G'N'R altough, have done pop tunes are searching for someone to fit the personna of the band. I like techno, I like pop, I like all different kinds of music. Just like this, if you were applying for a forensic pathologist and had a librarians degree, one would wonder. He sweetmeliss, I am with you;) A bedroom visit would be nice:):)

Posted by: Danni at July 7, 2006 05:58 PM

I hear you, Danni, and thank you for clarifying. But makes me wonder, then, why they would even make a contestant do a song like Coldplay's "Yellow" if they only wanted rock. My original thought would have been because they wanted to see *how* it was performed, but that went out the window with the Duran thing last night.

Oh well, it's a moot point now. Cheers!

Posted by: kylie at July 7, 2006 06:16 PM

personally I would rank Coldplay as alternative rock and Duran Duran as pop rock..plus, Coldplay is new,but the old Duran Duran cover he did was the antithesis of those guys back in the day..this is an audition, remember..don't worry, Chris will probably go soon! SN did have to emphasize song selection as well..nevermind Chris being clever enough to sing LA woman in LA..

and Dave, ok just my opinion, but I LOVE live music, and don't get out much anymore, plus I don't have cable or dish! So tell me, where I am going to see stuff like this if you guys don't provide it for us poor starving music lovers?, PBS and sesame street? :P (I have actually seen some good stuff on there :P)

Dave the show Rocks. F the critics.

Lucas,
Dilana,
Ryan,
Jill,

who knows if we ever would have gotten to see these MoFo's without Rock Star.

just the way Dilana looked like she wanted to savage brooke burke right there on stage made it worth watching.

Posted by: Ezekiel at July 7, 2006 06:37 PM

just to chime in.....I'm not sure EXACTLY how the show works on this level....but I got the impression they all picked the songs they wanted to sing. That's why Tommy and Dave kept asking "why did you pick that song?" Then I thought mabey they are given a list and can choose what song they want off that list, then I re-thought because as repulsed as they were at the fact that he did a DD song, it wouldn't be on any list, right? Does anyone know what the deal-e-o is. I know as the weeks go on , they pick from a list, but I wasn't sure about the first week.
In closing.....none of it really matters, i could watch it on mute, I could sit and watch Dave and Tommy for hours and not hear a dam word!!!
signed,

"obsessed"

happy weekend everyone!!!

Posted by: SweetMelis at July 7, 2006 06:47 PM

I hope to see great things from Lucas. He came out a bit harsh, But has the rock attitude down.
I love your site Dave! Hope to see you up on stage again this year as well.

Posted by: Lucy at July 7, 2006 07:25 PM

I think it is obvious who would potentially fit with SN. I wonder if the producers didn't put a few of the others there for shock value.

Posted by: P I M at July 7, 2006 07:28 PM

They picked their competition song from a "list" of 15 songs, they had to agree who got what song if more than one person wanted it...but for the performance to try to save themselves they could do whatever they wanted. I think they asked why did they pick that song during the original show just to see why they picked it from the 15 oppurtunities they had. At least that's what i got from it...hopefully i'm right cause i have that occasional wrongness too ( :

And good point about the press Dave...kinda like people who don't like something or don't care about it but put so damn much effort into voicing how they feel about it

anyway...love what you're doing with the show and SRL with helping new talent find their way, you're awesome and we luv ya!!!

Actually I wouldn't have been upset to see all three go-Chris, Phil and Matt last night.
All three were flat. Blah. Nuthin.

But have no fear, I'm sure you'll see Matt again. In a local coffee house with an acoustic guitar singing Cold Play covers.

Dave - love what you and the guys are doing this season - the new baby birds aren't really babies this time around, and man am I lovin' that. Going on record: Lukas and Dilana will double-front this band. Help make it so, Dave! *wet smooch*

Posted by: JYM at July 7, 2006 08:25 PM

"Lukas and Dilana will double-front this band. Help make it so, Dave! *wet smooch*"
that would so rock... those are my two faves...
they have the real natural rock'n'roll attitude to front this band... though I favor Dilana out of these two!!! and out of all of them!!!

Posted by: Savannah at July 7, 2006 08:34 PM

Welp, I'm not sorry to see Matt go, ( I mean did I see a tear or two in his eye? man up muthafucker!!) I wouldn't have been sorry to see Chris go...*shrugs* What I do like is that there are some kick ass females in the competition. Yeah, I know people don't much fancy Dilana but that chick looks like someone who can not only handle those bad boys but she might just punch them in the throat, tie em up and strap on her dildo and go to town...Patrice too. I think they both came off as "dirty girls" someone who could rock out with their "cocks" out. Dana too...kinda. They boys didn't really bring it. I'm kinda waiting to see Dilana (or whatever her name is) beat the living shit out of Lukas who is playing the JD, "letsbeinthespotlight" card. We'll see... I dunno, personally I like girls that trigger the..."do I wanna fuck em or fuck em up" card. It's still rock n roll to me.

Oh Dave, you had my best friends mother..who had YOUR picture on her 60 something year old ice cream birthday cake cackling at the "homeland" and "la raza" comments. hee hee. Fans are fans, she is in LOVE with you hombre. :)

Posted by: evil at July 7, 2006 08:37 PM

I gotta say Dave you're right about Chris being the one that should've gone, but Phil also was awful. He sounded like he was half asleep singing to save himself. As for Matt, the guy actually provided a Killers type edge to the DD track, but just him saying "Duran Duran" you'd have though he was claiming his favorite American was Jeffrey Dahmer. Last season got a decent rating because INXS is more mainstream, even though the players were nowhere near as well-known as guys like Tommy Lee. I don't know if a network show can have a "headbanger's ball" type line-up and survive. And when guys like Matt get butchered like that for even trying to provide some mainstream rock into the mix, I fear the ratings for the show will suffer.

Yeah, I prefer Metallica to Duran Duran, but the average TV viewer who isn't into heavy metal isn't going to stick around when it's all about head thrashing.

Posted by: Jeff at July 7, 2006 08:50 PM

who isn't?;)

Posted by: Danni at July 7, 2006 08:51 PM

I meant, who isn't in love with our dear DN;)

Posted by: Danni at July 7, 2006 08:52 PM

hahahaha! Dave, YOU are soooo funny (and right)..."God Bless" the people who love pop, ah'hahahahaha!!

OMG, how about that Delila chick? Makes me proud to be from South Texas! It's these open highways and Texas sunshine/storms that make us wild and crazy! Go girl, go!! woohoo!!!

Now Chris...*grates fingers on chalkboard* baby, baby, baby, the heart is there, but it aint coming out through the vocal chakras (I am not mean, just observant). I get the feeling he's not at his full potential and that it has to do with confidence/rhythm. Practice, practice, practice. Desire, desire, desire. Also, I am rather spoiled on The Doors music at the moment and L.A. Woman is my absolute favorite. That said, I think he did an 'acceptable' performance, however, not 'believable'. I would advise that he work on 'bending' the notes where necessary...take the note and sustain it for the time signature, then pitch it up or down with sheer intensity and growl (especially for L.A. Woman). Timing is everything when mimicking the vocals on classic rock songs. To sum up for Chris: he needs to work on timing, intensity, and vocal inflection/bending.

The guy that sang Duran Duran? wtf??....that was a BIG "no-no" with these guys. Rule #1 in English 101 - always know your audience and give them what they want - this applies to other arts and humanities out in the real world.

The girl who did Gracie Slick - really good performance, but not enough power. I must commend her though, because I think this is one of THE TOUGHEST female classic rock songs to tackle. One has to come out from the very beginning singing, low/deep, powerful/intense, and ALSO on key!! Woo!!! I wouldn't be able to do it on T.V.!! (does that mean I could do it somewhere? ;)

Dave, you are an awesome host. You know just what to say and HOW to say it. You display tact and diplomacy when needed, and also matter-of-fact truthfullness without being harsh. How do you do it? Keep up the good work.

Looking forward to next week's show! Well, that's all from me!! :)

-Southern Girl (jealous that a show like this wasn't around when I was young!)

Posted by: southern girl at July 7, 2006 08:59 PM

there is zero real difference betweeen coldplay, police, and duran duran. They are all much more pop oriented then GNR, Metallica, etc. Yet apparently, two of them were good enough for Supernova. I won't even talk about Goo Goo Dolls. Because I like them, but they are about as rock as my left nut, which is in fact more into jazz.

As for packaging , gimmie a break, all bands are packaged, there is no moral difference between pre and post packaging, this just strikes me as some sort of lame my music is better than yours thing. It's all good. Every band has one good song, and it's all rock - none of it would exist without the other. Frankly, I think it's funny all the hard metal types think their stuff is more true and more rock like, when not a damn one of them sounds like Elvis. Except Billy Idol. But he is god.

On the other hand, a suckass performance is suck ass, and that's Chris. You can clue in the clueless, but suck is forever. I mean, I totally wouldn't have done Duran Duran without more guitar in there, or at all, but at least it didn't suck, and at least Jim Morrison wasn't spinning in his grave wondering who just bent him over the prison bed. But it seems to me when you try to draw a line as to what is ROCK and what isn't, you just say, well, I'm into narrowminded music, which in fact, ain't rock at all.

Posted by: lpmiller at July 7, 2006 09:02 PM

eeeeeeeeeeek, just to clarify I meant Storm, not Dana, Dana is sweet cheeked, Storm is kick ass. just saying...

Posted by: evil at July 7, 2006 09:06 PM

Sorry - the "rockers" this season are pretty lame as a whole - there are maybe 3 of them that could pull it off - barely. maybe the little philipino billy idol guy - but he looks kinda short - tommy would have to stand way back for photo shoots - but in the end who gives a shit? It may be super cheesy, but it's great TV. That said, the bjork guy has got to go - so does angry baseball jock guy, just get it over with already. Matt was a liitle too Matthew Sweet - cafe largo scene for the band, but at least the fucker could sing.

Posted by: jork at July 7, 2006 09:19 PM

Phil sounds like his lips and tongue don't want to even be a part of him doing the show. It's like they are on strike and are refusing to work properly. If he thinks singing lazy works, he's more wrong than any of us were thinking Chris was gonna go home, I didn't like any of the botton three last night, I think a chick's gonna win, they have more balls and talent than the guys. That little philipono dude with the make-up looks like Eddie Munster!!! i'm home with nuttin to do and I'll probably keep sticking my worthless 2cents in all night!!!
I like the way you think Danni

Posted by: SweetMelis at July 7, 2006 09:37 PM

Was the entire audience, the band included, blinded by Zayra's tight clothes? Did everyone miss the fact that she could barely carry a tune, and made a mockery of Evanescence's song? Jenny is so nasal that she might as well be auditioning for The Nanny. If there were actually 25,000 people auditioning, I can only imagine what the other 24,985 were like.

I agree with Kylie: if that Coldplay song wasn't obnoxious enough for SN, it shouldn't have been a choice. And without the amazing Ty from last season, who was supposed to do "Cult of Personality" justice? Let contestants sing what SN wants to hear... make it a fair fight.

Anyway, since Lukas has already emerged as the bad boy, does this mean he's going to win? Last time, it seemed that JD (arguably one of the least talented, and certainly the most obnoxious) supposedly wrote "Dirty Vegas," but when the sheet music was shown on the screen, a band member's name was on it, too. It led us to believe that he was the chosen one long before the end of the season.

Since no one can confirm or deny that, we'll have to wait it out. If Dilana doesn't win, we'll know something's wrong. :)

You know how to roll w/ it! Maybe they should think of a new one...like, "maybe he should put a shirt on!" :)~
I was busting up laughing when they showed your face during the DD song...you looked like you were thinking What the Fuck??? haha...and Tommy...that guys reactions are priceless...he hasn't learned to tame down his expressions like you do. Makes for damn good entertainment!

Incase the UK people haven't found it yet, RockStar is on SkyOne this time around (not VH1 like with INXS). It's on Monday night, and looks like we'll be a week out of sync again, how useful.

Still at least it's being aired at all over here. Looks like it's going to be a great season.

Hey Danni, I saw Dave in Vegas last weekend walking through the lobby of the Palmsand my friends pushed me towards him and he stopped cause he saw I had the 6767 shirt on and he came over to me and hugged me!! i almost died! That man has an energy that exhudes (is that a word) that words can not describe. ALl my friends that were with me aren't "obsessed"like I am, and they've all thought i'm a little nutty, but they got it!! they were all effected just by being near him. They couldn't believe he acknowledged me. He rocks!!!! I've been floating since!!

I agree with whoever said the enitre bottom three could go home. I personally like Matt better than the other two but unless they step it up they will be gone in a couple of weeks. Now I know that his performance was low key but I think Toby has a great voice. His band Juke Kartel is has some good stuff. I look forward to seeing him rock it up.

I gave up on the msn.com site too ! wtf? Tell them to dump all the flash and just something simple..some of us stone-agers are still on dialup!

Some of the guys are so bad methinks they want Dilana and put her up against lousy guys just to affirm the fact a woman can front them..give the lady some competition, please!

What ever happened to TY? He was awesome..(the tongue killed him in the voting..and he thought it was his color :P )
And Lucas, give me a break! Go audition for Greenday...

Great show, can't wait until next week! Woot!

Dilana is a natural onstage rocking... She has the muse inside her... She is a pro and is up there with the super rock stars in mega wattage presence... It's very hard to come up with people that have not already made to compete with her... That is my not so humble opinion on Dilana...

Posted by: Savannah at July 8, 2006 08:02 AM

SweetMelis- As for "Pretty Vegas", if you had watched the first season, you would have known that in one of the tasks, the vocalists were supposed to write a song using music created by one of the members of INXS. JD didn't agree with his group and went solo writing "Pretty Vegas". So the reason his name and INXS is on the sheet music is b/c JD wrote the song and INXS created the music. JD was not chosen from the beginning. Get your facts straight.

As for the elimination, I feel Matt got shafted. He sang and performed the best of the bottom three. Would he have won the whole shebang? Doubtful. I just have to say the guy Chris must've been touched by an angel to survived this elimination.

Posted by: mecentric at July 8, 2006 08:07 AM

Well, D--you're doing what you do best, attract controversy! as usual. That's one thing that makes it so entertaining around here...and if you're a whore, we're all john's because we're buyin'!

OK, we mostly agree we "like" Duran Duran, but hey, he could have picked a more rockin DD song, Planet Earth is kinda girlie. I saw them last year and they had plenty of dirtier rock songs that Matt could've changed up a bit. Goes back to song selection once again.

Lukas put me off with his attitude, I like rebels but he seemed a little like he was pushing it just for effect and that loses something in the translation for me. Not nasty for nasty's sake, just gimme some bad boy with a good heart!

Love,
Sue

Hi Dave,

I see from the liner notes you played on Flyleaf's CD.
Just wondering how you hooked up with them?

b.

Posted by: b at July 8, 2006 09:22 AM

I was at the results show taping. After Tommy told Matt he was gone, he turned around and looked at the fans sitting in the bleachers. He had a kleenex in his hand and was drying his eyes. Too funny, too bad they didn't show that on the show. He really did hate letting someone go, and he wasn't making fun of Matt when he did that, but just used humor to get his point across.

Dave and Tommy were totally in to their fans. As for Jason and Gilby, they were rather reserved.

I have always been a big fan of American Idol, but I am sick of the artists they choose to work with the singers. I can't say rockers, because the only real rocker was Chris! Give me a break! Barry Manilow, Rod Stewart, Kenny Rodgers??? Funny, Simon criticized Chris for doing "What If" by Creed. He said Creed wouldn't be found dead on the show, but at the end of the season Live came on and performed with Chris. My point being, I was looking forward to Rockstar because I knew it wouldn't be boring fluff music. So I too was shocked when Matt chose Duran Duran. He even said it sounded like a awkward choice.

Hey Sue, you stole my line, I was the first to offer Dave money for his services!!! ha ha

Merrymagic, what's wrong with Greenday??? So Lucas looks punk, but look at Tommy's hair!!!

No comparison between these two... Tommy is rock-n-roll all the way down to his Greek endowment!!!

Lucas is more emo...

"But it seems to me when you try to draw a line as to what is ROCK and what isn't, you just say, well, I'm into narrowminded music, which in fact, ain't rock at all."

lpmiller, I love you.

"Though he did rock it a bit, you still couldn't escape the fact that he was singing...Duran Duran."

And therein lies the problem, James. If no one knew who originally did Planet Earth, we wouldn't be having this convo -- and I would go out on a limb to say Matt would still be there.

kylie, I have to agree that if nobody associated that song with Duran Duran, Chris probably would have been packing his bags. I still say if Manson cans sing Tainted Love, than let Matt sing Duran Duran. :p

SweetMelis, you're so lucky, you got a hug from Dave. :) Consider me officially jealous. ;) :p

I think that you guys are wasting time debating over weather a band is ROCK or not. What I think is the real issue is that Matt was told the previous night that they wanted to see something harder rock, and the best he could do is rev up a DD song? Has this kid never heard of anything from the first 4 Black Sabbath Albums or Led Zeppelin. I don't think the band has a problem with someone singing a slower paced song (example: Coldplay) BUT, when told to "bring the rock" by members of Bands like Jane's, the Crue, Metallica, and G'n'R, then you gotta pick something harder than DD regardless of your arrangement. If DD is his ultimate idea of performing something harder for the band, then I would agree that he is not right for Supernova. Perhaps if in 5 years the Killers are on the show looking for a lead singer...lol

As for the website, I had problems while using my Firefox browser, but once I switched to Internet Explorer, it has worked fine. I am on a high speed cable line though.

"Lukas and Dilana will double-front this band"

That's INGENIOUS!!

I love love love Dilana, but she may not be completely what Supernova is looking for simply because she is a 'woman'. I think Lukas has "it", but is a bit too egotistical and lone ranger-ish, maybe even a bit too insecure - I say that because of the way he came out swinging in the video snipet after the 1st night when he asked everyone who they thought would be the top 3 contenders. I get the feeling he's been struggling/shining on his own and fighting for 'stardom' by his bare teeth - if he had a co-star, he could learn about 'give-and-take' and 'support' and how to share the spotlight. Likewise, Dilana could be more readily accepted by the industry with a male co-star for fronting these legendary guys. I believe the two could learn much from each other and REALLY create a supergroup (haha), like how the members of Fleetwood Mac would share the spotlight vocals. Perhaps either one could do rhythm guitar when not singing? Okay, well that is all conjecture/scenarios to think about . . .

Scott, I agree with you on this point. But remember they can't just pick any song they want. You have to get clearance -- and pay -- for the rights to use a song. I am guessing here, but it sure seems these songs were chosen ahead of time and were probably on a list of permitted songs. Could Matt have picked something else? Of course. No matter what he picked, though, he STILL would have been better than Phil! LOL

First, love your website. I miss the hell out of L.A. since I am temporarily banished to FL. Really like Rock Star and so happy you are hosting the show again. Great to see Tommy, etal. out there. I think there's a little more "talent" on this show than the INXS deal. But really, how did some of these people make the cut? Too bad you couldn't cut TWO at once this time. Best rock singers on the planet? Not. But they do develop as time goes on. That's entertainment. Enough.

Posted by: whitebird at July 8, 2006 01:47 PM

"Best rock singers on the planet?"
No, just "best" ones out of the ones who showed up for the audition and made the cut for whatever reason. Not all singers on the planet auditioned, as we all know.

Dave,

As Executice Producer, do you have any contol over the Pop shit songs that are featured on the show. I know you still want to reel in the 40-55 year old female demographic, but it makes the whole search for a real rocker for a real rock band seem phony in a way. I mean I Love the show, but I just don't want to hear goo goo dolls, nickelback and Coldplay....

I want a singer for a Newsted & Lee band to sing real rock songs I.E. Rocket Queen, No Remorse, Super Hero, Electric Ocean, or even some Pantera for fuck's sake. Did I go to far, maybe, but hearing the house band play Walk would blow the Fucking stage up... Best to ya, but eliminate the pop and get a feel for what these guys can do.

Honestly no Zeppelin week one, but the Fucking Goo Good Dolls?

Posted by: JB at July 8, 2006 02:09 PM

I can't belive Matt is gone. I would think so early in the game you would pick the guy who could sing over a stupid song choice. The band had Yellow as a choice in the first round... is that better then the DD? Hell No, and that was supernovas selection. I am very disappointed.

I love Jane's and Dave, Metallica, G&R (who doesn't) and I'll admit to my Motley Crue obsession, but I also enjoy rock & roll in between from A-Z. High School in the mid to late eighties, bands like REM, police, U2, Inxs, (many, many more etc.) were big with all the clubbin' we were doing.

I started watching Rockstar last summer because of Inxs! It was great to see that Dave was hosting and the range of songs the rockers were given to perform (remember Marty singing a Brittany Spears song one week as well as Nirvana another??)! Anyway, it got me downloading and buying CD'S I hadn't had in years -- from all bands, especially Inxs. Many of the songs brought back memories and certain times of my life that really made me smile & laugh, aah…good times, good times!!

Since SN is new band and we don't really know any of their songs yet, we can only assume the genre since we know the current members and how they like to rock. I am still going to enjoy the singers performing a range of songs chosen from past to present, just because I love All music (ok, so I don't like country, but we all have our problems, don't we). I also love live performances with passion, and of course I enjoy remembering all those good times I had at gigs --- the 80’s & 90’ ROCKED!!! (OK, maybe we made a lot of bad choices regarding hair and clothes, but all in all, there were many great bands that put on awesome shows leaving you dEaf and hoarse for days!

Keep on rockin' in the…(well, you know)

hahahaha...looks like the 'blog critics' are keeping an eye on your site Dave.

In case you get a wild hair and do a Sunday 10, here's a coule q's for consideration:

~If you were a vocalist competing in RS:SN what song(s) would you chose to rock in order to save your ass w/ the guys?

~Is Teahouse of Spirits an official single? Meaning...do radio stations even have it to add to their playlist?

Love you all, have a good rest of your weekends! I'm off to see NIN at the Shoreline! WHOOOOO!

Love, Amber :)

FYI...Even though JD left his 'team', the Pretty Vegas lyrics are actually credited to three of last years rockers: JD, Marty & Jordis. The music was by Andre Farriss of Inxs.

I bought the new Inxs CD, Switch (thanks to Rock Star) . It's pretty good if you're into Inxs, et.al. Marty, 'sweet' Suzi and Deanna sing additional vocals on the CD. JD also co wrote two other songs on the album. I will say that on some of the songs JD sounds like the original singer, Michael Hutchence (I still don't know I how I feel about it!).

Anyway, Marty was my favorite from last year. I just really think this show is great not just because I love music but it does help up-and-coming singers get on their way. Not to mention, it brings attention to the new band as well as rock itself.

I'm gonna give the rockers a few more weeks before I start judging their abilities.

Cheers!

"I think Lukas has "it", but is a bit too egotistical and lone ranger-ish, maybe even a bit too insecure" --southern girl

Yes. I think Lukas has an "IT" factor but might also be overcompensating for something. He strikes me as very insecure.

Check it out. Ryan Star has a myspace page with an amazing version of Head like a Hole.

Shane! Are you kidding? Now I want to be able to vote him OFF!
DO NOT FUCK WITH NIN. EVER.

Savannah, for all we know, Lucas may have hidden assets of his own!!! ha ha

JB, I am a 55 yr old woman, and I love Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana etc.
We're not all sitting in our rocking chairs knitting baby blankets! Actually I am knitting a baby blanket, but I'm rocking out, not off my rocker!!!

Dave, my friend who went to the Rockstar taping with me, was really impressed by how nice you were to acknowledge me. I had two friends, that are really into you and rockstar, cancel at the last minute because something else came up. Mary went with me so I wouldn't have to go alone. She isn't into rock music, but she wanted me to tell you what a great job you're doing and how dare anyone call you a whore!!!!

Couple things to say here!
I had no problems voting or viewing anything on the MSN site. I thought it worked excellent. I have DSL. And as a 49 yr old mom, I too am way into my music and have been since I could breath. I was never an INXS fan but loved the show. I do watch idol, but its way to pop for me. Chris was so awesome to watch because of the rock factor for once. And let's not bash Rod Stewart, he is the only cool guy to be on that show! Rod the bod!!!! Matt being sent home over the Duran Duran thing was stupid. I am so not a fan of that band, but he did a good job with it and although I agree he is way to fresh faced and young looking to front Supernova, he had a better singing voice than so many others do. And hell he is from Chicago! As a side note, I am listening today to yahoo music radio. As I do most days while online. The alternative rock station. And every now and then I hear a new song or band I like and write it down to check it out later on. And what do I write today, but The Panic Channel, Why Cry. I about died when I googled it and saw it was Dave's new band. What a kick. This was before finding this blog. I just thought it was a riot. Love the song, love the sound and looking forward to your CD. Not all "old ladies" listen to pop. Remember my age group grew up with Pink Floyd, LZ, Black Sabbath, Alice and Bowie. Some of us just stayed cool longer than others did.

Right on Sue and Linda!!! Old Broads can rock too!!!! (no offense, I happen to like the word "BROAD") i am one myself!!!

Posted by: SweetMelis at July 8, 2006 07:53 PM

Linda..nothing wrong at all with Greenday (I don't want to be an Idiot American!!!) I was cracking on Lukas look.
As far as a double front, let Dilana be the front for Supernova and Lukas can get another band and do back up on the tour ;) :D
PS I like Tommys hair. He is a riot in a handbag!

Posted by: merrymagic at July 8, 2006 08:29 PM

Ha here's a laugh..I was going to also say that if he was going to do DD he could have at least picked "shout" and gritted it up..but then I googled it and it looks like that was by Tears 4 Fears..damn, who can really remember the 80's anyhow? ;)

Posted by: merrymagic at July 8, 2006 08:36 PM

Uptown Girls is on, and I will sit and watch it in its entirety simply for the Dave cameo at the veeeeerrrrry end!!!!!

Wow, those blog critics that Ambersonian posted the link for pretty much just copied and pasted Dave's entry and said, "Hey, Dave talked about Rockstar and bashed the critics." How creative. :p

Oh, I found the interview I taped of when Carmen was on Tyra and Dave came out and did his Tom Cruise imitation. So funny. :p

I watched the first show for the second time last night, and I just wanted to apologize for criticizing the talent..I think they all did a really good job and have great pipes! Even the Roxanne cover sounded better the second time around!

Anyone know if the show is using the same audio engineer as last year?

Posted by: tree at July 9, 2006 06:49 AM

Just a thought....

But remember, last year Marty Casey did an awesome version of Britney's ".....Baby One More Time", one of the most "pop" songs ever and look how far he got in the competition....it isn't the song, it was Matt's interpretation, I think....he could have made it more "rock" than that....

BTW I am waiting for the Rockstar version of The Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You".....j/k....
