Rockstar: Supernova
According to Variety.com, MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee, along with bassist Jason Newsted (VOIVOD, ex-METALLICA) and Gilby Clarke (ex-GUNS N' ROSES), are forming a new band called SUPERNOVA and will use the "Rock Star" TV program to search for a lead singer. In addition, "Rock Star" has signed songwriter-performer Butch Walker to produce SUPERNOVA's first album, to be released just before the new band hits the road in 2007. Walker, named Rolling Stone's 2005 "hot" producer, has written or produced tracks for AVRIL LAVIGNE, PINK, BOWLING FOR SOUP and TOMMY LEE.
Dave Navarro and Brooke Burke will return as hosts. Each weekly episode, which will air on CBS-TV, will also now feature guest appearances by celebs or rockers.
"Friends of mine, like Slash, Macy Gray, Moby and Rob Zombie, will join us and throw in their two cents about who should stay and who should go," Navarro said.
Lee released his third solo album two years ago and starred in NBC's "Tommy Lee Goes to College" last year.
Newsted left METALLICA in 2003, forming the band ECHOBRAIN and performing for technothrash band VOIVOD. Clarke has worked with various artists since GN'R split, including Michael Jackson and Lenny Kravitz.
Burnett, David Goffin, Lisa Hennessy, Navarro, Lee and Carl Stubner will exec produce the second season of "Rock Star". Conrad Riggs and Eden Gaha are co-exec producers.
Tonight is an all new Spread Radio Live. Gregg and I will be discussing all things Rockstar, The Panic Channel, rumors and anything else we can think of. The show should be on around 7:00pm PST.

people were saying that the possible group this year would be Van Halen or AIC and anything else would be not worth watching but putting Tommy with Gilby and Jason sounds very interesting and I'll deff. be watching

Thanks for passing along the official word!

WooHoo!!! Happy to finally know for sure. Dave and Tommy together...a must watch show for sure, not to mention all the others ( :

too bad you guys couldn't get courteney love to host instead of brooke, but i guess she'll do. rock on!
Posted by: sugar at March 16, 2006 09:27 AM
That's pretty fucking rad! Can't wait to check it out. Only thing that made me go "eh" is having someone else writing the songs. Tommy, Gilby, and Jason can write songs perfectly fine on their own - and I'm sure they can work with whatever singer they choose. But, hey, it's a TV show!
Peace!

Posted by: Schwing at March 16, 2006 09:41 AM
Man, that sounds like a pretty damn good mix of talent and producers...........the only thing I would of done is tried for Rick Ruben....but then again they probably did try.
Before the annoucement I didn't know to audition with a song from James Blundt or King Diamond ......now I know to do the later of the two....LOL

Umm, R.J., Butch has worked with Tommy in the past. Rick fucking Rubin is not the only producer in the Rock and Roll world, thank you very much. Mr. Walker will do just fine.
Damn Dave, everywhere you turn, there's an ATL connection, Brah! Ryan in the studio, Butch in on this gig, Brendan on TNO, Me-The Panic Prince, FFS!!! Congrats on this news Man! Should be fun viewing. Happy for you, very happy!

The Birds and the Bees...The Modern Version
A little boy goes to his father and asks "Daddy, how was I born?"
The father answers: "Well, son, I guess one day you will need to find out anyway!"
You're Mom and I first got together in a chat room on Yahoo. Then I set up a date via e-mail with your Mom and we met at a cyber-café. We sneaked into a secluded room, I upgraded my floppy to a stiffy and then your Mom agreed to do a download from my hard drive.
As soon as I was ready to upload, we discovered that neither one of us had used a firewall, and since it was too late to hit the delete button, nine months later a blessed little Pop-up appeared and said:
"You've Got Male"
Posted by: Sue at March 16, 2006 10:38 AM

Ambersoniand, i think being exec. prod. means dave makes more $$ out of it; along w/tommy, too.
here's a quote from wilkipedia re: exec. prod. for television:
"In the production of a television show there may be many executive producers listed. Sometimes it may be a situation not dissimilar to the one listed immediately above for motion pictures: someone with previous involvement with a particular work, a project's financier, or someone in control of the business aspect of production. Other times, this title is conferred upon a celebrity or notable creator: who has lent their name to a project to boost its prestige or credibility; as a recognition of newly-acquired industry status; or, as a perq to the show's main star / creative force. In these cases, the reality is that such a person has no input into the production."
so, dave can add a new credit to his list; although he might not really do much more than what he's done last season--but i really don't know, so i guess that's a pretty good question!
dave? response?

Dave, I didn't know who you were until RockStar INXS came out. I'm a sentimental fool. I can't wait to see the new series it sounds like it will "Rawk" better than the last. I'm glad I watched the first series. I've gotten to know about you and some of these nice TPC folks, it's been great!
Peace

this is what was in the nz herald today about the new rockstar program
Posted by: tash at March 16, 2006 04:46 PM
You know to be honest, the only thing that I was looking forward to in the next Rock Star was seeing Dave. I didn't actually care who the band was...everyone else was all anxious about knowing. all I cared about was seeing the sexy Mr. Navarro! But I also have a thing for Tommy Lee (as does my sister) so I cannot wait. He may be getting older but that man still rocks the drums!
ps-for those of you who haven't been to Miffy's myspace page in awhile, go there. There is a very sexy picture of Dave posted. There i was scrolling down her page...and this image of Dave came across my screen...HOLY CRAP!!!
Posted by: heather at March 16, 2006 05:54 PM
hey...I'm with you Jezzi...it's all about the "Dave, Dave, Dave" and my love for music. I've always loved Janes Addiction and always loved Dave's solo stuff, before I even knew who Dave was, but now that I know more about "Dave" I'm even more interested...in more than one way. Can't wait for all this great stuff to really start happening! Thanks Dave!

Tommy and you on the same show =That is humorous since I watched BOTH of you last summer one on RS and one on Tommy Lee goes to College, now I can watch the same channel for two sexy guys! Bring on the SRL! Love ya,Db

I was happy to see the lineup, but I was REALLY excited to see Butch Walker on as producer. He is awesome and really can bring out the best in someone's talent! I'm so glad that they are willing to go out and bring on such a great group of people! Of course, I will be excited to see you and the rest of the gang also! Don't think I forgot you! :-)
Posted by: Amy A. at March 16, 2006 06:53 PM
My apologies - I misread Butch Walker's involvement in the show. I didn't know he was just going to be producing the record and would not be involved in the writing. Was kinda worried about some Avril Lavigne-ing going on there for a second (read: someone other than the musicians writing the songs)!
Regardless, should be a great season! Dave, Tommy, and Gilby in one sitting doesn't get much better! :)
Peace!

Tommy Lee is such a theatrical drummer I love it. I remember the tour that I saw Motley Crue on where he was in a "ferris wheel" type of moving drum kit...

Wow, what a trip life is. I've been listening/following Dave since I first heard Mountain Song (recorded for and presented to me as a b'day present at a particularly rough time in my life)and was at the first Lolla and subsequent shows. I'll never forget what an experience the first Lolla was. Such a carnival like atmosphere, what with bonfires and one violent ass pit going on-primal. What a period in time. There was a point in time to where I didn't think DN would be around this long, nor me for that matter. It's a fucking miracle by the grace of God we're both still here. But time marches and Goes On and here we are, 2006. When I say I'm happy for you Dave, it's not just the new title, nor your marriage, nor the promise that TPC brings, nor Camp Freddy. I'm happy that you're still here Man. I'm happy I've had the pleasure to meet you and been able to personally express my thanks for your body of work. I'm happy for all the lines of communication you've established between yourself and the rock and roll community (at no charge, btw). I just hope that the new show will allow more time to see a true Rockstar in action, as in YOU actually fucking playing the guitar! I'm happy for your transformation. I'm happy for YOU, Man. Rock the Fuck on, Fucker!
Posted by: Lyn at March 17, 2006 04:07 AM
Ha, weird. As the occasional viewer of CNBC in the mornings, I couldn't help but notice that they are now promoting Jane Wells' segments as "Jane's Addiction". Ironically, she's interviewing Gene Simmons today.
Posted by: Lyn at March 17, 2006 05:47 AM
Dave, WOW!
Glad to see you will be back on Rockstar. We will be watching every show. With Tommy Lee, it should be cool. Play the Guitar as much as possible-you're awesome.

I was at the audition but I left beacause i got tired of standing in the rain for an hour. After seeing who is going to be in it I think I should have stayed.
Posted by: Pinhead at March 17, 2006 09:10 AM
Sean,
I thought I misread that as well but it clearly says on the Rockstar.msn.com announcement:
"After the winning singer is selected on CBS's ROCK STAR, Supernova will record an original album, to be co-written and produced by Butch Walker (hit songwriter/producer for Avril Lavigne, Pink) that will be released in the fall before the band embarks on a world tour starting in early 2007.
I HAVE to believe that DN and Tommy Lee/Jason/Gilby WON'T have anything to do with an Avril-sounding album!!
