Just Having Fun

Morning! I am just rocking the coffee and checking in on some of the press about Rockstar: Supernova. I love reading how bent some people get about this stuff. Like we are hurting people! Hahahahaha. Here's the way I look at it:

What's better than to put unsigned new rock talent on National TV?
After the INXS show, they went on to do a sold out world tour.
It's a television show! At the end of the day, they can always watch something else.
What I love about this show is that I have a really great time doing it, while at the same time, helping unknown singers get a shot on national television. I suppose that the critics that have a problem with what we are doing can always tune in to The Ashlee Simpson show, Making the Band or that Ashley Parker Angel show. The bottom line? I don't give a fuck! Hahaha... We got Newsted, Clarke and Lee... son!

"Rock Star co-host Dave Navarro has apparently become the same kind of media whore his wife Carmen Electra has built a decade-plus long career out of being." - Malcolm X Abram can be reached at 330-996-3758 or mabram@thebeaconjournal.com

Become? Where has this guy been? I've always had a flair for the whoring. Either way, that's what they said about Andy Warhol, so I have no problem with that company. Carmen has built a decade-plus long career? Good for her. Long live the freedoms of this Nation! Where you can be what you want to be and do what you want to do and make a living doing just that. I suppose that holds true for Malcom, but... There is an old saying: Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach gym. Those who can't do either, become columnists!

Check out Gregg Simon's response to Mr. Abram's article!

OK. Moving along. Tonight is another SRL with Gregg at 6:00pm PST. This will be my last live show for a while as I am leaving for Cannes (Rockstar stuff), Vegas (Poker Stuff) and then New York (Camp Freddy stuff) on Sunday. Don't forget to cast your vote for your favorite Indie Artist. As it stands, KHZ is killing it! Tomorrow I am rolling down to the Rockstar LA auditions. I'll have a full report on Saturday's Camp Freddy Radio.

SRL/Indie etc...

Tonight's SRL will be postponed as I have a scheduling conflict, but Gregg and I will be back on Wednesay & Thursday night for all new shows from 7:00pm-9:00pm PST. Speaking of Spread Radio Live, we now have all five of our new Indie artists uploaded and ready for your listening pleasure. Our bands this month are D'Amato, Year Long Disaster, Oh No Not Stereo, The KHZ and Monsters Are Waiting... Go to Spread Radio Live to listen to these awesome bands and cast your vote for the Indie Artist of the Month of May. All the bands will be listed on the site for the entire month, but the winner will become featured artist on SRL with the front page of the site and aggressive rotation during the programs.

We are also now taking submissions for the new Vixen of the Month at SRL. See "Read More..." in the Listen Now section to learn how to reach us. We are no longer accepting submissions for bands this month.

Previous Artist and Vixen winners will be archived so that their legacy can live on throughout the digital future.

This morning I hosted the 6:00am-10:00am drive time slot on Indie 103.1FM. For those of you who missed it, the Podcast is available here. Perhaps that will make up for the re-scheduling of tonight's Spread Radio Live.

SRL Tonight

Questions: The Polar Bear, the smoke monster, the numbers, the guy from the hatch, Michael, Walt, the Army, the reset, the others, the heroin, the sick baby, medical tests and now this balloon guy? You realize, of course, that this has been going on for two years? In that amount of time Jack Bauer could have gotten easily them out of there several times by now. The Panic Channel could have almost released a record too. In fact, if it wasn't for Lost, our record would be out by now. I want my two years back!

Our Indie bands for next month on SRL are almost ready for your votes. All we are waiting for is a couple of them to upload their songs and info and we'll be ready to go. We should have this up and going for your input by April 1, in order to feature one of these bands for the month of May. Also, our search for the SRL Vixen of May is under way.

Random Stuff: This weekend, The Panic Channel are doing our first official photo shoot to be used for press and to launch the long awaited TPC site. It really shouldn't be much longer. I'd say within the next two weeks. Monday morning at 9:30am PST I will be live with Ryan Seacrest to discuss the new season of Rockstar on 102.7. Tuesday morning, I will be filling in for Dickie Barrett on Indie 103.1 from 6:00am-10:00am PST. Early mornings. Yuck!!!

Tonight: All New SRL at 7:00pm PST sans Gregg Simon who is with Carmen on the East Coast. I'll make it work.

Not Much To Report

Not a whole lot to report today. This afternoon I have a meeting regarding the Spread Radio Live Clothing Line. We should have that stuff rockin in no time. The highlight of the weekend was Jerry Cantrell's 40th Birthday party on Saturday night. Billy and I rolled in after CFR and had a great time. Eric Avery was in the house and it was awesome to catch up with him. I hadn't seen him since he came into the station months ago.

SRL News: Messy Stench has been doing some on air tests. She should be ready to go live this week. This Tuesday's Dave & Gregg show will not happen as I have a conflict in scheduling. WE WILL BE LIVE TONIGHT AT 6:30PM PST...

It's true, I'm not always as gracious as my wife as is evident in this clip. My apologies to Larry Stern, but damn if this isn't funny anyway. Sometimes, you're just "not in the mood".

Sunday 10

1. I just read your book again and I was wondering what your relationship with Neil Strauss is nowadays. Do you ever talk to him or see him or anything?

Actually, Neil and I are currently working on a new project with our friend and co-writer Cliff Dorfman. I can't say much about what it is, but the three of us are actually getting together today for a meeting of the minds and a couple of hours in Microsoft Word. I can say that what we are working on is fiction and is unlike anything I have ever been a part of before.

2. Could you reveal anything about the way you go about learning other artists' songs? Like when you're playing with Camp Freddy or the recent VH1 show with Heart...

I simply just "play along" until I know the arrangement well, then I focus on the parts. It's usually the arrangement that takes the most focus. It's like if I play along while learning that, the parts just kind of fall into place. Once I have that down, I'll stay pretty true to the original, however, I'll throw in my own flavor from time to time such as solos or riffs throughout the track.

3. So how are your guys choosing cities and clubs for the near future TPC tour?

As for cities, I'm not sure as that is a booking agent call, but we are more than likely going to do a small club tour, hitting clubs that are much like the size of LA's Dragonfly. (300-400 capacity)

4. You've always struck me as being a bit agoraphobic...but lately you seem like a social butterfly...do you have to really make an effort to get out and about or do your moods just vary?

I have definitely gotten a lot better about it these days for sure. When it comes to big events, I usually only go if Carmen or I have a reason to go, such as a show, film premiere or what have you. As for just hanging out, I go through phases of either being all over the place or just staying in. I'm like out 6 nights a week or home 6 nights a week. Also, when there is a lot of work, I am more likely to do things after I get off, than if I was just home and decided to simply pick up and roll.

5. Do you and Carmen work out together as in go to the gym together?

Sometimes but not too often. We actually go to different gyms for the most part as she likes the equipment at hers and I prefer the equipment at mine. Also, I am usually there longer than her so when we do go together, she ends up having to wait for me.

6. Hey come to think of it would you mind filling us in on your work out routine. What you work on what days, how & how many times.

Very simple. I do an hour of cardio up to four times a week and do a light weight full body work out twice a week. Abs each day. For conditioning, I change up the forms of cardio and weight exercises to keep myself from getting used to certain exercises and to keep from getting bored.

7. What is going to be different for you as an exec producer on this years Rockstar?

It means more meetings with music publishers and sponsors, but it also means more creative input as in the types of clinics and finding the talent and personnel that will appear on the show as in guest judges. It's more of a creative role. I'm not acting as a suit that comes out during the commercial break and says, "You know, we really can't have you saying that on Network Television." In fact, the great thing about this show is that nobody does that. It's a pretty free environment.

8. Hey Dave, I saw you in a picture w/ Brittany Murphy on imdb.com. Are you guys buds?

Yeah I met her through Carmen several years ago. I also did a small cameo thing with Mark McGrath and Carmen in her film, Uptown Girls. She is truly one of the nicest people out there.

9. Whatever happened with that guy that called into CFR and said he was the one that took something of yours-he apologized and said he'd return it...or something...What ever happened with that situation?

That was about a guy who stole one of Chaney's pedals after a TPC gig. He ended up coming down and returning it.

10. Hey Dave, you've mentioned doing some things for the charity cure autism now (I think that's the one). Any specific ties to the charity or friends w/ autism?

I do have ties to that organization. I have a close family member that suffers from autism.

All New CFR

Billy and I will be in for an all new Camp Freddy Radio tonight at 6pm-8pm PST on Indie 103.1 FM. Our special guest tonight, Inger Lorre from The Nymphs. She will be in the studio playing some new recorded tracks as well as a live in studio acoustic performance.

Camp Freddy Podcast

Carmen, Gregg and I went to Rokbar last night and had a blast. The highlight of the night was when I was approached by a guy who simply said, "Lovin the Spread Radio Live dude!" We are getting it out there folks. Thanx for the support and help in Spreading the word!

Now that the Rockstar news is out, there isn't really much left to comment on until the show airs. However, today is a good day to throw out a sweet Sunday 10. I can answer your queries tomorrow as I am trying to get back into the habit of doing that.

Also, don't forget, the chat room is now 24 hours and requires no password. Feel free to use it during the show or at any time you desire.

Updates Etc...

"Rocker Dave Navarro has confirmed his marriage to sexy actress Carmen Electra is in trouble, confessing the couple rarely gets to enjoy quality time together."

FYI: That was the journalist's interpretation, I neither confirmed or confessed any issues. I merely said that we both work a lot. Nothing more. If any of you heard SRL last night, Carmen, Gregg and I were having a blast. This is my official "once and for all" comment about it. Now, on to other matters.

LA auditions for Rockstar are on March 31st from 10am-4pm at the Knitting Factory. Other cities and dates can be found here. If you think you have the voice and the vibe, go on down and rock the f@#k out!

I'm excited to see what Supernova sounds like. Having Jason Newsted on board is for me, the really amazing part of this whole thing. Everyone knows Tommy and I are into doing other forms of media and entertainment, but Newsted? That's insane! At the end of the day, Tommy is one of rock's most amazing drummers and Newsted is such an incredible bass player. I personally can't wait to see what this rhythm section can bring. Gilby has played with everyone (GnR, Heart, etc.) and with the exception of Perk and Chaney, I can't think of a more solid canvass for him to texturize with his instrument. All I can say is... These contestants better be able to sing, son!

The Panic Channel: We are currently routing a three week, 16 date special limited club tour somewhere in May through June. Awwww hell yeah! More news on that as it comes in. I will post cities and dates as soon as I know.

Yesterday I accompanied Carmen to the Tyra Banks show. During Carmen's segment I ran out and did my best "Tom Cruise on Oprah" with Tyra... Couch jumping and all. Total jackass shit but it was funny as hell. I'll find out when it airs. While we were at CBS, we came upon... The Wheel! Yes, of course I spun it!

Rockstar: Supernova

According to Variety.com, MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee, along with bassist Jason Newsted (VOIVOD, ex-METALLICA) and Gilby Clarke (ex-GUNS N' ROSES), are forming a new band called SUPERNOVA and will use the "Rock Star" TV program to search for a lead singer. In addition, "Rock Star" has signed songwriter-performer Butch Walker to produce SUPERNOVA's first album, to be released just before the new band hits the road in 2007. Walker, named Rolling Stone's 2005 "hot" producer, has written or produced tracks for AVRIL LAVIGNE, PINK, BOWLING FOR SOUP and TOMMY LEE.

Dave Navarro and Brooke Burke will return as hosts. Each weekly episode, which will air on CBS-TV, will also now feature guest appearances by celebs or rockers.

"Friends of mine, like Slash, Macy Gray, Moby and Rob Zombie, will join us and throw in their two cents about who should stay and who should go," Navarro said.

Lee released his third solo album two years ago and starred in NBC's "Tommy Lee Goes to College" last year.

Newsted left METALLICA in 2003, forming the band ECHOBRAIN and performing for technothrash band VOIVOD. Clarke has worked with various artists since GN'R split, including Michael Jackson and Lenny Kravitz.

Burnett, David Goffin, Lisa Hennessy, Navarro, Lee and Carl Stubner will exec produce the second season of "Rock Star". Conrad Riggs and Eden Gaha are co-exec producers.

Tonight is an all new Spread Radio Live. Gregg and I will be discussing all things Rockstar, The Panic Channel, rumors and anything else we can think of. The show should be on around 7:00pm PST.

SRL Tomorrow

squiring:

Noun
1. A man who attends or escorts a woman; a gallant. 2. An English country gentleman, especially the chief landowner in a district.

Quote from a gossip magazine: "Dave has been publicly squiring a number of attractive blondes around town."

Do they mean that I am the chief landowner in a district? Awesome! I wonder where it is.

Carmen and I read the full story about this absurd rumor and all we really walked away thinking was, "Well, at least WE got the full page!"

I'm on my way home from NYC and I am looking forward to catching up on some TiVo time. 24, L&O, Idol, Sopranos and some new movies sent over via the magic of Netflix. Riss, Loop and I are also meeting about the SRL line this week as we begin our journey into the merchandising world. Hoodies, shirts, and ladies undergarments, it will all be revealed soon. Also, listen for an all new Spread Radio Live tomorrow night with Gregg Simon live from my house where our special guest will be Carmen Electra.

Stay tuned... Rockstar news is just a few short days away!

BLACK SABBATH

Last night's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was spectacular. Ozzy, Geezer, Bill and Tony were given an incredibly warm and moving introduction by Lars and James of Metallica, who later joined the rest of their band to perform Sabbath's Hole In The Sky and Iron Man. Metallica definitely served the songs well. It was kind of surreal to watch a band play Black Sabbath songs while seated with Black Sabbath, but it was obvious that all four of the legendary members were very moved and enjoyed the show. It was an honor for me to be at this event as Sabbath was one of the bands responsible for shaping my musical direction. I owe a lot to them as does most of the heavy rock world and I think that this induction was long over due. Other artists inducted last night were The Sex Pistols, Blondie, Lynyrd Skynard (thanx Lyn), Miles Davis and legendary record moguls Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss. The A and the M of A&M records.

The Pistols, in true form, chose to not attend the event and instead, sent a hilarious letter about the price of the tables that was read by Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner. During the Blondie acceptance speeches, the room got a little uncomfortable when former members of the group outted Harry for not allowing them to be a part of the performance on stage during the Blondie musical segment. Evidently she opted to perform the old Blondie songs with her new band and it was clear that the old members took this as an insult. As uncomfortable as it may sound, I have to give the guys credit for speaking their minds and making their point. After all, they were the ones who put in the years, wrote the songs and helped get the band to the point where they were able to be inducted in the first place. It would have been nice to see the old band reunited for the segment, but even still, Debbie's performance was on point and she hasn't lost a thing.

Other highlights for me were meeting Peter Frampton and Brian May of Queen. Both of them mentioned what an awesome job the House Band did with their songs on Rockstar last season.

Still in NYC. Got some press to do and then I'm out of here. I'll more than likely get to an SRL tonight around 7:00pm PST...

The Chat Room & PSA

Now that there are so many different facets to the 6767/SRL worlds, including Camp Freddy Radio and the upcoming Panic Channel site, Robert and I have decided to make the chat room functional for all of them. Starting today, the chat room will be open 24 hours a day and require no passwords. (If you are not a member of the Panic Community, click "guest" and sign in that way.) This way you can pop in during Spread Radio Live, Camp Freddy Radio or any other time you want. Say you have insomnia... pop into the chat, see who is there. You may access the room from 6767 and find someone from SRL listening to the show who is chatting with someone from The Panic Channel site. Could be fun! Make friends and discuss some of the projects happening here or anything else your little heart desires. The room will invariably be moderated so you never know when something might get your ass "kicked", but that's all part of the fun isn't it?

"This is... A public service announcement!!!"

JUST A REMINDER...27 days from today, cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls.

YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THE CALLS...

To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 1-888-382-1222.

It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time.
It blocks your number for five (5) years.

Heart Decades on VH1

Last night was the Heart Decades show and all I can tell you is that is was AWESOME!!! The band looked and sounded truly amazing and Ann and Nancy couldn't be sweeter or more down to earth. They played for more than two hours featuring an acoustic Battle of Evermore, Magic Man, Barracuda and a killer version of Rooster with Alice In Chains. I had the honor of doing Bebe Le Strange, Crazy On You and Straight on with Heart. The performance was so inspired and I can't think of a more deserving band for this Decades program which will air on VH1 in May. I ended up doing a couple of encore songs... Barracuda with Heart, Jerry Cantrell, Duff McKagen & Rufus Wainwright and then I stayed on for two Zeppelin covers... Black Dog and Misty Mountain Hop. By the way, Heart's bass player happens to be Mike Inez who also happens to be the bass player for Alice In Chains. He was on double duty last night and he rocked it. Now for Alice. Mind blowing. Jerry is at the top of his game and the band, Mike and Sean, featuring Duff on guitar, sounded absolutely perfect! Like they never went away. Having known those guys for close to 15 years, I have to tell you that I was really choked up to see them again. It made me miss Layne while at the same time, celebrate his memory. AIC really honored his legacy by inviting two singers to do the job last night... William DuVall from Comes With The Fall and yes, Pantera's Phil Anselmo! The show was both full of emotion and exciting as all hell!

Looks like there has been somewhat of a "leak" regarding Rockstar this year, but don't get too comfortable, what you have heard literally isn't even the half of it... Trust me. All I will add is that the show will feature an ensemble cast. Yes, the new band will have a drummer, but that does leave plenty of slots open now doesn't it? Hmmmmmmm.

Heart/A.I.C. in A.C.

I'm off to Atlantic City to play with Heart. I'll check in once I get there. Don't forget to tune in for an all new SRL on Thursday night live from the A.C. with Larissa as co-host. Not only am I going to have a chance to perform with the legendary Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, but I am going to be able to catch the first Alice in Chains reunion show as Jerry and the boys will be performing with a yet unnamed singer. This should make for a very exciting show. Of course, I have my ideas as to who it is, but you know I can't mention it here. The Heart show tapes on Friday evening in A.C. and will appear on VH1 sometime in the near future.

As for Rockstar, I still am unable to comment, but the press release should be a day or two away. As soon as the line up is announced, I'll be able to answer some questions about the season and finally chime in. It will be a different show this year, but one that should certainly be entertaining to watch.

Go check out SRL for new Indie bands and the Vixen of the month, Lottie.

A Late Sunday 10

1. Dave, when was the last time you didn't have a goatee?

Lemme see. That had to be around 1993. Damn! Thirteen years. I have always said that one day I'll shave, laser remove the ink and move to Wyoming.

2. When you get a tattoo how long do you wait from the time you get the idea to the time you get the tattoo?

It depends. Usually not that long. In fact, the last few I have gotten done were spur of the moment "what the hell" types of jams. I am not so great with appointments.

3. Do you hit up Melrose much? If so what's your favorite store and why?

I have not been there in years for shopping. I'll stop by for a coffee or an "on the way somewhere" gawk, but I rarely get out of the car. I tend to stay Westside for shopping and Eastside for playing.

4. It's obvious that you enjoy working in various mediums. What are your thoughts on touring the new TPC record? Would you describe The Panic Channel as a side project of sorts, or is it you're main focus?

Yes, I do like working in many mediums but music is always the most important and most special to me as it is where I get my creative flow. I look forward to taking TPC out on tour and making it my musical priority, but I will always enjoy playing with other artists and of course, Camp Freddy.

5. How does one become an SRL Vixen?

The Vixens will be selected by us at Spread Entertainment: Gregg, Riss, Robert... and I may have something to say about it too.

6. Will you be attending the same parties as Billy Morrison tonight?

I don't think so. I'll probably end up slumming it somewhere like the Rainbow or Rokbar. What?!

7. What happened with the Rockstar Press Release? I see auditions but no insight on show...can you let us know what's up yet or are you still obligated to keep sealed lips?

Hey yeah! What did happen to that? It'll be this week I'm sure. I think we are just finalizing some of the information so we can be as accurate as possible.

8. I was wondering Dave...would you ever consider moving to NYC or you an LA guy through and through?

I love NYC. However, I like it best with 24 hour room service, pay-per-view movies and housekeeping. I suppose if I could live at the Mercer, I could live in New York. If I had to go to the market and do random life stuff, I couldn't. I would really want my car.

9. Will you be indulging in a little poker while in Atlantic City?

"Did you order the code red?" "You're God damned right I did!" I mean, you're God Damned right I will.

10. What's the latest on the photo booth show?

As a result of TPC, Rockstar and some other stuff that has come up, we have decided to push it back to the fall. Don't worry I haven't forgotten!

This just in: Spread Radio Live will soon unveil the SRL Clothing Line! To celebrate this launch, Spread Radio Live has begun it's search for the SRL Vixens. We will select one model each month to help Spread the word around the world and elsewhere!

Tonight! Can you feel it? Oscar fever! I am considering a live broadcast, but of course I need my daily nap first. If there are any questions floating around out there, now is the time to ask away. I can possibly hit 10 today.

Toronto

Well, that was an awesome trip. The event was a lot of fun and Bob and I had a great time catching up. After the awards ceremony I did a "Live From Toronto" edition of Spread Radio Live from my hotel room. I even got Bob Ezrin himself to stop by and do a quick interview as promised. My co-host was Larissa, my friend and manager, all the way from LA via speakerphone. So far, BeE has done two shows this week and I have done two. By the time Messy gets cooking, we should be able to bring you live shows everyday of the week, followed by archived rebroadcasts. Tomorrow night is an all new CFR on Indie. Don't forget to tune in!

As for Rockstar, there is a new plan in place, but I cannot address it until the press release comes out this weekend. I can tell you this, it's not what you would expect. It's not Van Halen. It's not Queen. It's not Journey. In fact, all I will say is that you have never heard of this band before. Should be a fun summer.

Bob Ezrin/Killola

I'm leaving today to Toronto to help induct my friend, producer Bob Ezrin, into the Canadian Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Bob has produced everything from Alice Cooper, Kiss, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed to 30 Seconds To Mars and the last Jane's Addiction. He just finished the new Army of Anyone album featuring Richard Patrick and the DeLeo brothers. This is a much deserved honor for him and a huge honor for me to be a part of this historic event.

Last night's Spread Radio Live was a lot of fun. It felt great to back with co-host Gregg Simon. Obviously I won't be home for tomorrow's show but I plan to broadcast at some point from my room in Toronto. Who knows, maybe I'll get Bob to stop by and say a few words.

Speaking of SRL, Killola has won by a landslide as the new SRL Indie Artist of the Month. Congratulations to Killola and a huge thank you to everyone who voted and participated in this new endeavor on SRL. This means, of course, that we are now searching for five new unsigned artists to be a part of the March search for the Indie Artist of the Month. If you would like to submit your band or an artist you like, please do not send us any music. Our server crashes from all the files we get. Instead, please send the link to the band's site or MySpace page and we will check them out.
