Heart Decades on VH1
Last night was the Heart Decades show and all I can tell you is that is was AWESOME!!! The band looked and sounded truly amazing and Ann and Nancy couldn't be sweeter or more down to earth. They played for more than two hours featuring an acoustic Battle of Evermore, Magic Man, Barracuda and a killer version of Rooster with Alice In Chains. I had the honor of doing Bebe Le Strange, Crazy On You and Straight on with Heart. The performance was so inspired and I can't think of a more deserving band for this Decades program which will air on VH1 in May. I ended up doing a couple of encore songs... Barracuda with Heart, Jerry Cantrell, Duff McKagen & Rufus Wainwright and then I stayed on for two Zeppelin covers... Black Dog and Misty Mountain Hop. By the way, Heart's bass player happens to be Mike Inez who also happens to be the bass player for Alice In Chains. He was on double duty last night and he rocked it. Now for Alice. Mind blowing. Jerry is at the top of his game and the band, Mike and Sean, featuring Duff on guitar, sounded absolutely perfect! Like they never went away. Having known those guys for close to 15 years, I have to tell you that I was really choked up to see them again. It made me miss Layne while at the same time, celebrate his memory. AIC really honored his legacy by inviting two singers to do the job last night... William DuVall from Comes With The Fall and yes, Pantera's Phil Anselmo! The show was both full of emotion and exciting as all hell!
Looks like there has been somewhat of a "leak" regarding Rockstar this year, but don't get too comfortable, what you have heard literally isn't even the half of it... Trust me. All I will add is that the show will feature an ensemble cast. Yes, the new band will have a drummer, but that does leave plenty of slots open now doesn't it? Hmmmmmmm.

Dave
So Phil was able to perform excellent. Looks like that Down tour/album rumor little birdies have been whispering just might happen.
Glad to see the show was good. Hope your trip was good and got to play some poker as well.

enough about the show...Tell about New Jersey!

Sounds like an amazing experience! I know what your saying about being choked up seeing them perform live...I have never seen them, it kills me that I never will see them w/ Layne fronting the band, but Im sure the music is still off the chain. Im quite positive I'd be completely overwhelmed hearing them live. I really hope they tour the states this year...so far I've only seen dates overseas. Thanks for the review, Dave! I love living vicariously through you!
Love, Amber :)

Dave--I was so sad last night, thinking about the awesome show I was missing. After reading your description I know I had every reason to be. I guess I'll just have to wait for TPC to tour, unless you have anything else scheduled for the Jersey area before the touring begins.
How long will you be hangin' around Atlantic City for? Play any Poker yet? Have fun! Safe travelling!

Dave,
I read that Tommy Lee's band will be in ROCKSTAR Season 2. Is that accurate?
Later,
Mike from NYC

Hmmmm... Are you still actually going to be the HOST of Rock Star, or will you actually be IN this ensemble?
Anyhow... Glad to hear you had a great time at the show. (Anyone here actually go? Any other reviews? Do tell!) Can't wait to see it on VH1.
Have a wonderful day,

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Dave,
I have a friend who is just getting into learning acoustic guitar and she's having problems with her finger tips blistering up and bleeding from the strings, really painful for her. Do you have any advice on what to do for that so it will get better so she can continue to play? I've heard they eventually just have to callus up?
Posted by: Jena at March 11, 2006 04:02 PM
Jena...
tell her to wax the strings... there's special wax to wax guitar strings with... makes the action easier on the fingers... also make sure the action/strings are not too high, because if they are it takes double the effort to press them down which means harder on the fingers...

Can't wait to see it on VH1. Yeah, I didn't realize that Duff would be there.
Glad it rocked!

I've loved Heart ever since I was about 11 years old and AIC was and still remains one of my favorite bands. I can't wait to see that show on VH1. It must have been incredible!! Glad you had a great time.

Dave, sticking around for the NIN show at the House of Blues in Atlantic City tonight?
Peace!

Denise: I thought the SAME thing! You read my mind! :)
Jena, there's this fantastic stuff called Finger Ease, (aka "cheat spray"). It's pretty awesome. It lubes up the strings, and makes them easier on the fingers because they'll just glide along...
Spreading the Martha Stewart helpful hints,

Dave, I was coming down the escalator while you going up, to Worship maybe. Did you see the Buddy Guy / Cray show? It was great.

p.s....whilst busying myself putting my snowball souveniers in the freezer, I noticed that the thread from 2 days ago was still open...I'm not obsessive compulsive, just unhealthily observant..

John from the Taj in AC called tonight and said you had looked at my band web site Bleak City Band. Where can I send you some information?
Posted by: Patrick Droney at March 11, 2006 07:51 PM
This is just my opinion but I think maube they are looking for a whole new band with Tommy Lee as the drummer and there will be more than one winner so all the band positions can be filled. Wonder how close I am.

I'm so jealous!! I wanna play with Heart! You played 'Straight On' with them? That's heavy. Oh, to sing with them. What a dream. But until then, off to cover them I go.
And about AIC. Very nice. As much as most, if not all, miss Layne, it's great to hear that the band, as a whole, still has that thing that made them very special. Chemistry.

Scotty was on CFR? Gdamnit, I curse this life. Stupid sleep thing. Glad you had a good time though Dave. I saw Heart in like '78 or so, one of them all day festival things. Great band. And there's not a nicer dude in the biz than Duff. Super nice to me when we met. I still say make it Rockstar-The Band and take already existing unsigned bands to compete with you, Scott, Matt, Billy, Tommy, Chaney, Perk, etc, as a set of "special" judges panel. Winner gets a contract and paid studio time. A modern day version of Battle of the Bands. Burnett would have 60-75% of all market share from the under 50 demo. Kind of American Idol without the cheese. It's a slam dunk, shooting fish in a barrel.
Scotty was on CFR? Damnit! Damnit! Damnit!

Hey Dave I can't wait to see the VH-1 show!! I love Heart and Bebe Le Strange is one of my fav's of theirs...sounds like its gonna be sweet.
Have a great Sunday everyone

Jena...
From personal experience, the Finger Ease is great.
But also have her strings checked to make sure the action isn't too high, if they are, then it's usually worth it to have it lowered.

I can't even imagine what Barracuda would sound like with Dave, Duff, and Rufus playing it. If anyone mysteriously finds a bootleg copy of this, you've gotta hook me up.

Dave!
PLEASE tell me you hit up the NIN show at HOB! Or I could say "House of F#*KIN $H!T" (if you were there, you'll know why I said that, TR had a great rant. Fire alarm scare with fully dressed firemen and everything. So of course they played Burn.
NIN was the best I've ever seen--if I had to make my own setlist, this would be it...The Day the World Went Away, mr. Self Destruct, Deep, Dead Souls...amazing as always. Josh Freese is the MAN! Even better than with APC. Trent seemed to appreciate the connection with the fans. I hope you didn't miss it!
Oh, yeah--Dees NUTS!
The sound guy confirmed all that dave said about the night before and more. Wish I could have made that.
Amber, will post full report later at the community, we just got home from AC and I am TIRED.

Oh man, Alice in Chains. In my opinoin, one of the greatest bands ever. Dave, i'm so glad you were part of that whole thing, all of that extreme talent packed into one show. I would love to have seen it. If it could have ever happened, Alice and Jane's would have been the best tour known to man.

I bet the new Rockstar show will Feature Spinal Tap.
They are looking for a new drummer.
Watch and see.
