BLACK SABBATH

Last night's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was spectacular. Ozzy, Geezer, Bill and Tony were given an incredibly warm and moving introduction by Lars and James of Metallica, who later joined the rest of their band to perform Sabbath's Hole In The Sky and Iron Man. Metallica definitely served the songs well. It was kind of surreal to watch a band play Black Sabbath songs while seated with Black Sabbath, but it was obvious that all four of the legendary members were very moved and enjoyed the show. It was an honor for me to be at this event as Sabbath was one of the bands responsible for shaping my musical direction. I owe a lot to them as does most of the heavy rock world and I think that this induction was long over due. Other artists inducted last night were The Sex Pistols, Blondie, Lynyrd Skynard (thanx Lyn), Miles Davis and legendary record moguls Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss. The A and the M of A&M records.

The Pistols, in true form, chose to not attend the event and instead, sent a hilarious letter about the price of the tables that was read by Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner. During the Blondie acceptance speeches, the room got a little uncomfortable when former members of the group outted Harry for not allowing them to be a part of the performance on stage during the Blondie musical segment. Evidently she opted to perform the old Blondie songs with her new band and it was clear that the old members took this as an insult. As uncomfortable as it may sound, I have to give the guys credit for speaking their minds and making their point. After all, they were the ones who put in the years, wrote the songs and helped get the band to the point where they were able to be inducted in the first place. It would have been nice to see the old band reunited for the segment, but even still, Debbie's performance was on point and she hasn't lost a thing.

Other highlights for me were meeting Peter Frampton and Brian May of Queen. Both of them mentioned what an awesome job the House Band did with their songs on Rockstar last season.

Still in NYC. Got some press to do and then I'm out of here. I'll more than likely get to an SRL tonight around 7:00pm PST...

Hey, speaking of Rockstar, isn't it about time for that season 2 press release? Come on, man, haven't you kept us in the dark long enough?

Also, do you think Carm will be well enough to give us a new Carmen Electronica Hour sometime soon?

Posted by: TommytheCat at March 14, 2006 04:06 PM

Magnificent! I hope Riss will be involved as co-host if you go ahead with tonights' S.R.L.

Any chance one of the up-and-coming Indie bands you support will be at the Inkslingers Ball this year in Anaheim? Some of the sponsors are Indie103.1, The Suicide Girls, and Rockstar. The deadline is tomorrow (the 15th) for submitting to it, and they're asking local Indie bands to apply. Just saw that today and wondered if anyone you know has/or should submit an application. Good ink, good music, good times!!!

Dude,
If you're carbin' it, head over to John's on Bleeker for some pizza! Also there is a Gretsch store on the next block across the street. Some very cool vintage rigs. Oh! Fugghedaboudit!

Damn that was some great writing for today's L & O... not sure if it was new but...

Hi Dave,

Just passing through......hope all is well

I'd like to clarify Debbie Harry's (and other original Blondie member Chris Stein's) stance about not wanting the original Blondie members to join them for their performance.

Their 'feud' has something to do with a situation which has been on-going for years, it involves the ex-members suing Debbie & Chris Stein etc. Much too long to get into here...

Debbie certainly didn't mince any words when she was interviewed backstage by "Access Hollywood" after the confrontation.....she still seemed quite angry, throwing in a few choice 'bleep-a-ble' descriptions of her former band mates!

take care,
itanja

Posted by: itanja at March 14, 2006 11:15 PM

But Infante made a great point Itanja when Debbie said "you see my band up there don't you?" and he replied, "Oh, are THEY being inducted?". I bet in 10 years she'll feel like shit about not playing with them, regardless of legal issues now. She should've played with them. I guess the real question here is: Why was Blondie inducted anyway? There was one album, with maybe a couple of hits, "Heart of Glass" and another one. The only reason the band got in was because she used to hang with Warhol, Basquiat, and any other NYC artist that found her "star" quality irresistable. Other bands/artists that AREN'T in yet that were far more influential include Yes, Roy Buchanan, Roy Clark, Marc Bolan/TRex, NY Dolls, Emerson/Lake/Palmer-hell, she's not even Blonde anymore! I do admit though, I found myself singing Heart of Glass more than once yesterday. But then I put on some Iron Man and the feeling went away.

Posted by: Lyn at March 15, 2006 03:31 AM

Iggy and the Stooges, RUSH, Brian Epstein...Can someone please tell me why RUSH is not in? Makes no sense. But I guess for every inductee, one could come up with a hundred others that THEY feel should be there. But the RUSH thing, there's no excuse for that, nor YES...

Posted by: Lyn at March 15, 2006 04:40 AM

dear god. OS. Blondie had way more than one album and one hit. groan. sigh. etc.

they deserve to be in the R&R hall of fame, even though Clem Burke said they weren't too sure about it, cos it isn't very punk to be in it.

i guess that band that played are the touring band, since they 'BLONDIE' are touring this spring. how many bands haven't had personnel changes over the years. Debbie Harry is NOT called Blondie, the band is. holy lord god, etc.

Posted by: ylais at March 15, 2006 04:49 AM

Cos Yes are boring. hahahaaaahahaha :P

Can't wait for the new Rockstar to start!

Always,
me

Hi ylais & Lyn,

I LOVE when I stir up lively discussions!! ;)

Heck, there are loads of 'influential' bands and musicians that should inducted, though most of these awards etc are usually based on sales and popularity contests.

I would induct Van der Graaf Generator & Peter Hammill.....though lots of people in the music business would say "WHO??"

The band barely sold albums but toured relentlessly over the years......of course, there weren't many hummable songs in their repetoire! lol

Most of the time, fans know more about these award situations than the people in the business do. We seem to know where bands get their influences etc.

Though we've got to remember, it's a business.....bands who don't sell (or have global impact) usually don't get acknowledged.

Hammill's snarling vocals and 'punk' (the term wasn't even invented yet in conjunction with rock music) concept album (released in 1975) greatly influenced John Lydon's vocal style........

........and you all know what Mr. Rotten & crew started.......though very few know 'where' Rotten's vocal style came from....a prog rock singer! For shame! lol

take care,
itanja

IIRC, Blondie were one of the first bands to actually meld rap & rock......long before Mad-donna and her ripping off the NYC 'vogue' scene.....and even before the Run-DMC/Aerosmith connection.

As well as Debbie doing the whole glamourous sexy 'blond' fronting a band schtick...Debbie was on the NYC club scene waaaaay before Madonna got off the bus from Detroit (or wherever she's from).

Had Chris Stein not taken so ill and Debbie taking time off to care for him, perhaps Debs would have had the impact and level of fame that Madonna had.

We New Yorkers know Debbie was there long before Ms.Ciccone was.

Debbie is infinitely much more talented and original than Madonna....Debbie can actually sing and she can act. Madonna has always been more about style over substance.

Surrounding yourself with excellent musicians, dancers and stylists has nothing to do with being a good musician, it has everything to do with covering the fact that your 'talent' is minimal.

Debbie is a rock singer...I don't know what Madonna is, a Vegas act? Madonna is a product of MTV, marketing, hype and stylists.

I agree with you, Lyn, 100% about RUSH..

Posted by: Junebug at March 15, 2006 08:21 AM

Hey, Itanja, Madonna called. She wants to face you in a dance-off. She said, "Heart of Glass? Ha, how about Heart of Ass-as in I'll mop the floor with my insane Kabbala-esque moves on her."
She was right about one thing though-Italians Do It Better.

Posted by: Lyn at March 15, 2006 09:11 AM

I 100% agree with Itanja.

Posted by: ylais at March 15, 2006 09:24 AM

Debbie Harry is THE ORIGINAL. SO many other women have followed her example.

Blondie is da bomb...
and up there with her is Dale Bozzio from Missing Persons...

From The Insider Online:

In other couples news, I'm happy to report that everything is okay with CARMEN ELECTRA and DAVE NAVARRO. Several tipsters called me in the last week with buzz that their marriage was falling apart. Electra's rep tells me, "They are fine, fine, fine. This started somewhere and it's just gotten out of control." Whispers of problems apparently began in recent weeks because Electra and Navarro haven't been seen together as much they used to be. Work schedules have kept them apart, but they'll be very much together when Navarro joins his wife for several stops on her worldwide publicity blitz for her upcoming movie, 'Scary Movie 4.'

All they really needed to do was just check this blog! :D

I think Dee should've been inducted a long, long time ago. His influence over everyone from the Sex Pistols to Bowie to Lou Reed to even Green Day has been overlooked for far too long. A force in the industry, he's always worked tirelessy to promote the very essence that is Rock and Roll. A TRUE pioneer, a legend, never given the recognition he deserves. It's a shame.

Posted by: Lyn at March 15, 2006 10:05 AM

Thanks ylais ...and.....LOOOOL to Lyn...

..........too bad Mad-donna very rarely mentions that she IS of Italian descent....she's been trying way too hard to be an upper class British 'lady' these days.

With her "To the Manor Born" delusions....yeah right, Madonna. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

I can't wait until her non-TV watching, sheltered-from-the-media children start asking about her SEX book. loooooool
