Rockstar and The Panic Channel

(This is how my hair looked when I woke up this morning. Haha.)

"Death doesn't just sell records; it can also spark a series. Banking on the success of the first season, Variety says that CBS is ready for more "Rock Star." Sadly, Dave Navarro and Brooke Burke will return as the hosts. Expect a whole lot of kissing ass and cue cards."

Hahahaha. OK. So it looks like CBS has picked up the show again. You know, last season I kind of took a lot of heat for being too "supportive" with my comments. (How can you be too supportive, anyway?) Well, here is the thing. The band looking for the singer was INXS, and obviously, I am not in INXS. My comments were in line with my role. Co-host and nothing more. If I was to hammer the contestants, whom I also had to see every week during the clinics to work with, it would make no sense. I was there to help them. Anything I might say to them of a critical nature would have been inappropriate as after all, it wasn't my band. I am not at liberty to say how, but this season will be much more interesting and different.

The Panic Channel: We have been mixing this week and we are seven songs in. Just about half way before we start to sequence the record and figure out which song(s), if any, will be saved for something else. The stuff is sounding killer and we are looking to come out sometime before summer. We have completed She Won't Last, Awake, Go On, Loophole, Bloody Mary, Said You'd Be and Why Cry. Today we are tackling Outsider.

As a result of the mixing, there will be no Spread Radio Live tonight, but you can always tune in for a rebroadcast!

WHO IS THE BAND???

Posted by: Six7Six7 at January 17, 2006 01:00 PM

Outstanding! I can hardly wait!!!!

Sounds like the record will be out beforehand so we'll have something to tide us over while waiting for shows :D

Yeah you're cool and all Dave but I can't get enough Brooke Burke on my TV. Sweet!

Posted by: Mean Gene at January 17, 2006 01:21 PM

Hello Dave!

Great to hear about your progress with TPC, I am looking forward to it =)

So, when are we going to find out who the band is and how you are connected to it? Inquiring minds want to know...

Much love loco...

Posted by: Carolina at January 17, 2006 01:24 PM

Dave,

You go right ahead and be supportive!! There is ENOUGH negativity in this world. Those performers are up there giving it their all, so why shouldn't they hear something good and helpful. If the producers wanted negativity, they could have hired that butthole, Simon, from the "Idol" show (how's that for negativity?!)

Also, I don't ever get to hear SRL live, so I really do enjoy the fact that are re-broadcast. Thanks, Dave, for all you do for your fans!

Posted by: Mechelle at January 17, 2006 01:26 PM

hey dave, if you ever need a stand in for when the cue cards say to kiss brooke's ass, can it be me? and by the way, how is the Grand National doing?

~ Dave ~ Nice to hear... ~ Good Luck!..Looking forward to the show and the Panic album! Hugs And Kisses To You And Carmen!

VERY excited about TPC and VERY excited about RS - which would NOT be anywhere near as entertaining without you and Brook Burke might I add!
I seriously don't think you kissed ass - you pointed out to all of the contestants (even your favourites) what brought their performances down and things for them to think about and work on. It all comes down to not what you say but how you say it! And basically you weren't an arrogant ass about it!
(Oops now it seems I'm the one kissing ass ha ha)

Much love x x x

any word on who the band is?

Posted by: Scott at January 17, 2006 02:07 PM

Congrats on getting picked up again Man. I knew it would be. One thing that was sorely missing from last year that could easily be fixed going into this season-Me. That's right, I'm a bad ass singer with the body to boot. I'm often mistaken for Neal or Mig from last year with my svelte figure and hot ass Jagger-esque style. So, I'll just wait for that "Hey Lyn, come on down" email that I know is forthcoming........

Posted by: Lyn at January 17, 2006 02:10 PM

The band is VAN HALEN. Seriously.

Posted by: Yoder at January 17, 2006 02:10 PM

Man!!more RockStar,i seriously cannot stand the concept,Pop Idol,PopStar..etc,
I hope i never see a RockStar:Nirvana or a RockStar:Alice In Chains in the future because i will seriously loose faith in an already weak repeditive music scene.

This isn't my reflection on Dave Navarro's involvment in RS,just my opinion on the concept of RS and music talent finding(exploiting) shows like it.
Of coarse this is only my opinion and i fully expect flak.

Posted by: Steve l at January 17, 2006 02:27 PM

As long as we dont see a "ROCKSTAR:The Monkeys" (or anything similar) I'm game! Not that I'm knocking Pleasant Valley Sunday (word up, Mickey). I think its kinda cool for a band to let fans be a part of the process.
Dave, you can only be too supportive if its a flat out lie. Peace.
ps-Why dont we get a show together that helps a techno type performer find a guitar player. It could be called NO SAMPLES ALOUD.

Hiya Dave and everyone,

My comp is still all messed up, thought it was the motherboard and now it looks like it is the processor but oh well.

Dave your hair really looks like Jake Gyllenhaal's in "BubbleBoy", very nice. (haha)
Awesome news about the record sounds like it is coming pretty smoothly.
Also I personally don't care what is said about the whole rockstar show thing, just seems like some people need someone to try to knock on and you were the target. No worries.

I have been so crazy overwhelmed with appointments, and I am getting into a sport which I have a try-out in Feb. I will post what it is if I get in.

Have a great week everyone.

Hi Dave!

I loved RS:INXS and loved your encouragement of the contestants - as well as your ongoing encouragement of them outside of the mansion.

As I'm sure you know, the Lovehammers CD drops on the 24th. Would you mind giving them a shout out on the CFR this week? Marty and the boys need all the help they can in order to make this work and since you seem to have liked what you've heard of the new disc, I thought maybe you could say a couple of words on their behalf.

Also, will you be at their midnight Viper Room show on the 27th? I know, I know...you probably wouldn't say if you were, but I thought I'd ask. :)

Thanks for all you do. I'm a huge fan!

it's not fair I tell you, not fair at all!! How is it that a man could have bedhead like that, and still look HOT!!! grrrrr....

ok, my disappointment that there is no new SRL is somewhat relieved by the fact it means you are one day closer to finishing record...

and, whilst amusing myself on the internet just now, I came upon this link, a faux script for the second season of RockSTar...it IS goin to be Van Halen, mark my words

Posted by: jezebel at January 17, 2006 03:46 PM

if it is Van Halen hopefully they will be more open to a new sound than INXS was. Who wants a Roth or Haggar wannabe. For some reason I don't see Eddie doing a reality show to find a singer though.

"Death doesn't just sell records; it can also spark a series." Just from that I'm guessing, it's someone DEAD that needs replacing.

I don't think it's Van Halen, as far as I know everybody survived that. More or less.

Did someone in Alice in Chains die? I didn't know.

It can't be Nirvana. There would be riots in the streets, if Cobain was replaced.

Never heard of The Monkeys. Did I miss something good?

Ian Curtis was a tragic loss. But his distinctive voice held Joy Division together. I can't see him being replaced. Riots in the streets of Manchester.

Dave can you give us a hint, what decade we should be in? Or even if it's a dead singer? For all we know it could be a dead musician. You know Dave, this is going to irritate the çr@p out of me. Do you know approximately when, CBS is going to let us know?

Hating a mystery,
LostBoy

And Dave, stop obsessing over your hair. You still look better than me, when I wake up in the morning.

Dave, you're not up to the Photoshop antics again, are you?!

Posted by: Al at January 17, 2006 04:33 PM

Um, Lost Boy, it is the Monkees, and they were a TV show that made some great pop tunes ("Last Train To Clarksville", "Pleasant Valley Sunday" or "Daydream Believer")....but it was long ago in the mid 60's (I was *very* small back then!!!)

I think it is Van Halen who will be on "RockStar" but I don't care as long as Dave is on it!!!

Maybe this season's Rockstar ISN'T about the singer, but the guitarist, and if that's the case, maybe we will be able to see Dave heading up guitar clinics......

This isn't my reflection on Dave Navarro's involvment in RS,just my opinion on the concept of RS and music talent finding(exploiting) shows like it."

Here's your expected flak.
Exploiting?
1. To employ to the greatest possible advantage

Hey Steve, would you feel the same way if it was auditions for a guitarist for a band? Have you ever auditioned to be in a band? What's the difference tween RS and that process? And why come on here and post a negative comment on Dave's blog that you know damn good and well he's going to read? Just to say, HEY, I MADE A STATEMENT! LOOK AT ME, I'M A REBEL! I'LL BE THE HIT WITH ALL THE ALTS! What purpose does it serve? If you don't like the show, don't watch. How hard is that? Did you post on metallica.com about how "exploitive" it was for them to audition tons of bassists? Bet you didn't. What's the difference in that process and RS? Is it because it was a singer instead of a guitarist?
What's wrong with providing someone a chance at realizing a dream, becoming a star, getting rich, and being a part of that process?

Posted by: Lyn at January 17, 2006 06:08 PM

Yes ylais, I want answers to all my questions. In fact, I demand answers to all my questions. As long as the answer isn't Van Halen.

I'm truly psyched for both TPC and RS, but I'm just wondering how you plan to juggle both? I mean, I know you're really good at multi-tasking when it comes to projects, but if I remember correctly, RS pretty much engulfed your schedule last summer. How's that going to work out?

"It can't be Nirvana. There would be riots in the streets, if Cobain was replaced."
..i agree lostboy. cobain made nirvana, most of the people that i have met that are fans don't even know the names of the other band memebers (no offense meant to anyone).

the MONKEYS.."hey, hey we're the monkeys..people say we monkey around..." you have NEVER heard that? like seriously?

I agree Lyn..even the artists that do not get accepted at least have had exposure. and now some of them are doing great things..marty had a band before, but i bet he sells more records now..ty taylor plays with dave a lot in various performances, etc. bo bice on idol has a cd..without all the strings carrie underwood (who is from oklahoma by the way--my homestate)has.

DAVE--congrats on the rock star..if you were not co-hosting it again i would not watch it. and i didn't think you 'kissed ass'..brooke wouldn't let you! ha,ha. (sorry, just remembering a certain time you commented about how she looked in her very mini skirt). i just hope whoever the band turns out to be, they are more open to having a female singer than INXS was.

Monkees~ weren't they the first 'manufactured' group/band?
Lostboy, the Monkees was a tv show, from the usa.
it was really popular here too, late 60's/early 70's. i loved it when i was little! it was about a band, 4 guys, and then of course because they made music for the show, it became as if they were a real band. Davy Jones from England was in it. He was in Oliver before the Monkees. The songs, someone's posted a few already. (man this is long..someone else tell him who the other 3 were..like the Mr "my mom invented white out/tippex" guy)
Nirvana. Chris Novoselic is in politics now, and out of the music business; so no way is that going to happen. We all know about the other 2 guys...don't we..Lost boy??!
Joy Division morphed into New Order, who are still going,so no way, unless some big secret change has happened.
Alice in Chains~the singer died. Google it Lostboy! You have to work for some knowledge yourself!
:P

On the subject of Pop Idol, etc.

Steve does have a point, and he's entitled to his opinion. We've had loads of 'reality shows' in the UK. It's getting to be too many, and too much; and the quality of the shows is falling. There are way too many of them on here, and most people are fed up with them; and that's according to tv viewing research not just my own take on it.

Pop Idol makes me want to scream, or shoot the tv; so Steve is not alone there.

RS: that's a little different, from other shows, yes, and I'll watch because Dave is in it.

If it had different presenters, I'm not sure I'd be so into it. It would depend on the band that's auditioning someone as well.

Posted by: ylais at January 17, 2006 08:43 PM

Metallica auditioned tons of bassists. Right, but did they not do that in the way they normally would have?
They didn't have audience votes, did they? Was it like a game show in any way?
Unless I missed something..the Metallica situation, wasn't/isn't the same, as RS, Pop Idol..etc.

And, I'm pretty sure this discussion should scoot itself over to the boards now...

"cobain made nirvana, most of the people that i have met that are fans don't even know the names of the other band memebers"

I could be wrong but I'm thinking it's unlikey to be Nirvana. One of the other guys in the band was called Dave Grohl and he's got this other little band going now called The Foo Fighters - they're doing ok for themselves, had the odd song out there, so I'm not sure he would want to leave ;-) (j/k)

" it wasn't my band. I am not at liberty to say how, but this season will be much more interesting and different"

I don't know why but I instantly thought new member for TPC or Camp Freddy? Definitely thought it was a band that Dave might actually be in (or manage?). Then again - I'm probably miles off!

"Should I be feeling like a "complete" idiot?"

I'm saying nothing but if you spell it as Monkees not Monkeys you will find loads! ;-) If not, go to www.monkees.net and they have their own fansite (I can't believe I actually looked that up!). Maybe someone else can tell me if they used to have the Banana Splits on their show? For some reason as soon as I read the stuff about The Monkees I can't stop singing the Banana Splits song!

Posted by: Miffy at January 18, 2006 02:48 AM

How about Queen?

Oh boy, that would fucking rule.

Posted by: Dana at January 18, 2006 03:12 AM

That I would love to see - isn't Paul Rodgers a permanent band member now though? Then again, they did tour as Queen + Paul Rodgers so maybe he is only temporary.

There's rumours the Spice Girls are about to reform ..... ;-)

Posted by: Miffy at January 18, 2006 03:41 AM

it'd be a fool's journey to try and put someone else to front Nirvana - they came, they conquered, they're gone - band members moved on...

and imho...

"i just hope whoever the band turns out to be, they are more open to having a female singer than INXS was"

when a band is known for it's strong male or female front lead singer, you got to stick with the same sex to even begin to use the same name... otherwise if you change sexes, change the name... i mean could you imagine someone re-forming the Runaways or Go-Go's and having a guy lead singer - no way... so coming from a female, i don't think it's sexist, just is what it is as they say...

regarding Van Halen, the only version I liked was with David Lee Roth and I wasn't the fan of Van Hagar...

Posted by: Savvy1007 at January 18, 2006 05:17 AM

Perhaps it'll be a 2nd season of RS:INXS? ;)

Would be a different (and cool) spin on it, if a given band was looking for a non-vocal-musician (as obviously vocalists are musicians in their own right) like an axe-person or drummer. Is that huge dude still the bassist in Metallica?

Hope the 2nd series is a bit more Global. Always seemed a bit odd the show aired in Europe almost a week after the US (considering INXS are known the world over). Guess they didn't want our vote...

Guess time will tell...we'll all have to be patient and wait a bit. Certainly something to look forward to.

Posted by: waler74 at January 18, 2006 05:44 AM

Maybe Jane's Addiction should do it - I heard they misplaced a singer...

ONLY KIDDING - DON'T START!!

Seriously, how do you commit to a big TV series and maintain your "dayjob" in the band? Did last year's series get in the way of the record? Did it lead to more of those individual sessions and fewer all-the-guys-rocking-out-together sessions? How do the rest of the band feel about you going off and doing RS? Does this mean no TPC tour as you're too busty with other things?

Posted by: ed at January 18, 2006 05:47 AM

I meant "too busy"!!

Posted by: ed at January 18, 2006 05:50 AM

Thanks ylais for responding for Steve. I appreciate it. I was really trying to get his perpective as an accomplished guitarist. I'm entitled to my opinion as well. A game show? No, the Metallica auditions weren't a game show, and neither is RS. The only difference 'tween the Metallica auditions, or any other band auditions, and RS is that it's not televised and put on a weekly schedule. Actually, there were cameras present at the time(Monster). Can't you folks over there turn your TVs to a different station? We got a whole station over here dedicated to reality shows, just about,(Bravo)and I don't like most of them. Conveniently, I have about 60 other stations as an alternative.

Posted by: Lyn at January 18, 2006 05:56 AM

We got channels 1, 2, 3 and 4 if that helps? (and possibly 5 depending on how close you are to France). And I think all 4 of them are dedicated to reality shows - at least that's how it feels on a Saturday night! ;-)

I'm pissed because I only just cancelled my Sky subscription because it got too expensive - now do I sign up for a minimum of 4 months and hope it's aired on VH1 again or do I just give up and live vicariously through you guys?

its not going to be queen, they are touring with paul rogers in the states starting shortly. so they are out.

van halen isnt going to happen. their PR has stated that there is no truth to the rumors about them.

as someone already said, its not nirvana...grohl has already surpassed them and going back to be a drummer.

highly doubtful that its anyway related to DN in anyway other than him being host since, and no offense, the majority of the public dont know about TPC or Camp Freddy.

Posted by: Twisted Angel at January 18, 2006 07:17 AM

Hey, Dave.... I wouldn't complain if you woke up next to me with hair like that!!

Sounds like the TPC album is shaping up nicely, some UK dates in November then??? pretty please??

And you changed your mind on not putting yourself through the trauma of another Rockstar then? I am very surprised to hear that!

I think you should wear your hair like that on a RS show! I'd like to see RS audition like guitar players/drummers myself. I think that would be a bit of a change.

Nice pic... hair looks just fine!

I too am very surprised to hear about Dave doing RS again, but as the saying goes, there's a reason for everything. I sure ain't gonna complain about seeing him on TV more. I'm intrigued by the "different and interesting" stuff that he can't comment on yet.

My first hunch, other than the VH rumors, is RS AIC, as some of you have suggested. Time will tell...

Have a good one, everyone.

Lyn,to respond to your responce to my post about RS and shows like it,without further ado(sorry for the delay, had to sleep then go to work)

No,i probably wouldn't feel the same way if the show was instrument based,be it guitar, bass or drummer auditions, fuck, any instrument,classical...etc,that would interest me more i guess.
Yes i have auditioned for a band, once, that was different because i was the only one who auditioned,LOL

Your too kind by saying i'm an accomplished guitarist, but thank you.

I did expect flak for saying i don't like the show(and shows like it),i'm not a rebel for saying so.Maybe DN did read my post, maybe he didn't,besides,i wasn't dissing DN for his involment in RS,just dissing the shows.Even if DN has read what i wrote,i doubt very much that he's all that bothered, there are plenty of loving posts about the show to let my little opinion bother him.
I'm a fan of Dave Navarro because of the music he has done and doing, and i will remain to be a fan of DN for this reason,i don't go out and buy a magazine because he is in it,i don't go watch TV show just because he is on it(unless it has him performing musically with his band, past and current)

Lyn,would you have gotten defensive if DN wasn't involved with the show and i had still dissed it?

No i didn't ever post on Metallica.com when they held bass auditions,i have never posted there in my life.

I do exactly as you say,if i don't like a show,i don't watch it,infact i don't spend my time zombied out infront of the TV much at all, unless there is porn on.;)

Lisa wasn't responding for me,lisa was just venturing her own opinion on what i posted, she has a great mind that girl,so there is my perspective,i hope you can see that i meant no harm or offence,as i'm sure niether did you.

Good post Steve.
I myself would probably check out the show even if Dave wasn't in it. Only for the fact that I like watching ppl playing instruments/music. Austin City Limits is fun to watch.

Posted by: Diane/FRI13th at January 18, 2006 09:36 AM

Actually Steve, I was hoping you'd been a lot more pissed at my responses. Damnit! J/K, you're certainly entitled to your opinions on the premise of the show, howver, I only questioned the posting of it on Dave's blog. Dave has said many times he reads each and every comment here at least.
"Lyn,would you have gotten defensive if DN wasn't involved with the show and i had still dissed it?"
Probably not near as much, but then again, I've had the great pleasure of meeting said DN and was lucky enough to spend some time with him and I love the dude; I'm just a tad bit biased. He's one of the kindest, coolest, sweetest souls I've ever met. (big ass kissing part here):) and if dude wants to do Rockstar again, so be it. Why "diss" it here, on his blog, if his heart is in it again? That was my only question. Rock on Man.

Lyn,you are one of the lucky ones,i will probably never meet DN,if i did i think i would probably quietly shake his hand hoping some of that guitar magic would transfer from his hand to mine,LOL(seriously,i would)

Its funny, whislt i was reading your post,it reminded me of a post i made passionately defending One Hot Minute on another board.

i was being honest, you was being honest, and honesty is positive.

You rock on too Lyn,:)

Awwww...I love you two (Steve L and Lyn)!!!

Now that is the way to have a discussion and/or disagreement. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside :D

Happy Hump-Day all

I didn't watch RS: INXS either. Was it required? ;)

I'd watch this time if it was a band I liked. I don't think Dave's ego is so fragile that he can't handle the fact that some of us just weren't/won't be interested, although I do understand Lyn's point. I guess, like Steve L, I'm just voting for honesty over politeness. That's certainly nothing new for me. It's a habit that's gotten me in trouble many, many times. It's still my preference, though.

Anyway, I had no idea Paul Rodgers was sticking with Queen. I'm kinda disappointed. I just don't see that as the right fit. Has anyone seen them together? If so, please let me know how it was. Thanks!

Lyn, my point was that the Metallica auditions were NOT like a gameshow. and so were not comparable to Pop Idol which is like a gameshow is many respects..I wasn't saying it is a game show.
It's all about "contestants", a host/presenter, judges, and it has the look and feel of a gameshow.
You compared RS, and Pop Idol, and the like to Metallica auditioning for a bassist; and I disagreed
with your comparison...since the Metallica auditions were REAL. And I'm sure we can all tell the difference between REAL, and a set up show, called a 'reality show'.
Also, I thought you were being way too hard and reactionary to Steve.

Posted by: ylais at January 18, 2006 11:09 AM

Evidently not if Steve didn't feel that way.

Posted by: Lyn at January 18, 2006 11:33 AM

I think you were and that should be good enough.
I mean check out what you said in CAPS! Oo
Trying so hard to wind ppl up aren't you eh?

Dave. I just want to say that I love that you come on here so often and share "it all" with us. I love reading your blog. I wish more people were as unabashed as you. It's refreshing. Thank you and please don't stop!

"Evidently not if Steve didn't feel that way."

Well, yeah,i did feel you were taking a shot at me,but i know how things can be taken out of context in text form,so i chose not to let it infuence my responce.

its settled now as far as i'm concerened and no hard feelings,so its all good.

Peace guys and gals, love not war.
