Recovering
I either got food poisoning or the flu. Been laying in bed for the past several days and it sucks. I actually feel a little better today, but the dreams... I must have relived every moment of my entire life in my dreams. Soup, Gatorade and movies. I had to miss a day of the show but I should be all right for tomorrow's taping of the performance show. Today is all about sleep, fluids and documentaries about Egypt. I watched Coach Carter last night with Samuel L. Jackson. I am a sucker for those sports movies. You know, the old formula, "He came to teach them, and in the process, he learned about himself." I'm not even a sports fan but Miracle, Hoosiers, Lean on Me, Stand and Deliver, Hardball, and all the others... The whole student teaching the master thing always works for me. At some point I want to say to the kids at Rockstar... "I came to teach you about rock, but you taught me about myself." The only thing is, like 6 people would get it and think it's funny, everyone else would go, "WTF?" That's all the more reason to say it I guess. Sometimes my sense of humor is so inside, that it backfires.
I'm actually up and around, smiling, smoking and having some coffee. Almost like a spiritual awakening. Like I just came out of a sweat lodge. Maybe that's why people feel so reborn and spiritually awakened when they come out of those things. Who wouldn't feel happy and alive after enduring something as miserable as that? "Oh I feel so much better now!" No you don't, you feel the same, you're just happy as hell to be the f!@k outta there!
Checking out a killer movie called Storytelling by Todd Solondz. Highly recommended.
I don't know if there is a new CFR tonight. I know I'll be out.
1. Dave, on today's Howard stern at 7:12 EST Howard Stern he called you "half of fag" and implied that you were sort of gay. Any comments?
Maybe he is "half" attracted to me and conflicted. Actually he has been giving me shit about that for years. The truth is that he is totally in love with my wife, I can't blame him, and perhaps there is a little jealousy there. Believe me, if I was even a little bit light in the sneakers, I'd be all over him with those pretty blue eyes and sexy long hair and...

Is that Keanu Reeves puking out the car? Disgusting. Funny, but disgusting! Hope you feel better dude.
Howard's definitely jealous. He pulls that "what a fag" thing anytime a guy wearing eyeliner is dating/married to a gorgous woman. He swore for the longest time that Manson had hit on him and rubbed his thigh sexually at a party one time when he was dating Rose McGowan. Although Manson was probably doing it to fuck with him, I wouldn't put it past him. You just can't trust people who only wear one contact lens. :)
Question for Dave: Speaking of Manson, do you two still speak? Or is he off in his own little world at this point?
Anyway, feel better dude! If you haven't already, definitely check out a movie called "The Dreamers" when you get a chance. Great film by Bertolucci (Last Tango In Paris); very sexually provocative and intriguing. "An American boy comes to France to learn about cinema, but he's taught about menage' a' trois' instead!" Not exactly Coach Carter, but still a great film! :)
Peace!

Hope you get better soon! I have been reading your older entries. I made it to April today. I will stop asking silly questions. I found the answers in the older entries.
Karate Kid was a great movie about learning from a master in a positive way. It's not a sport of a different kind. I had my sons watch that when they went through the Power Rangers, want to kick everyone phase when they were much younger. Defense not abuse.
The more I read of your postings, the more I think you are a "cool" person. It may take me a few more weeks to read them all, but I hope you don't mind having more fans. I will have to get your book soon. You're just one kick ass positive person.
Get well and keep "Rockin'".

Feel better Dave. And thanks for the glamorous shot of Keanu. He's one sexy bitch.

Dave,
Get well soon! Drink plenty of fluids and watch The Family Guy, Chappelle Show and Seinfeld on DVD. That is my medical advice for the day.
I like the pic of NEO puking. Classy!
I just met a new girl, VIBHA, 2 weeks ago at my friend's wedding. She is really nice, sweet and loves hard rock and metal. Lucky me. Hopefully it will work out. BTW, she thinks your hotter than Carmen. I am lending her my autographed copy of DTTAH. I think that she will love it because everyone else does.

Dave,
I noticed a certain Pumpkin in 'Don't Try This At Home'.
Do you and Billy keep in touch these days? Seeing as he's in Chicago all the time now, I'm sure people don't see much of him.
Also, have you considered doing any collaborations with him? That would be amazing.

Hi Dave,
What coincidence you posting that photo! I guess GREAT minds think alike...lol.
I was going to post that pic of Keanu a few days ago at TPC board in the "I Want To See" photo thread. People were asking for "celebs doing odd things in public" photos. lol
FEEL better.
Saw "Storytelling" a few months good, very good stuff. Odd, but interesting. "Welcome to the Dollhouse" is another of my recommended movies of his, I'm sure you've already seen it.
Re Howard: I'm basically ambivalent about his true 'talent'. Does he really have any talent??
I get bits & pieces about him as a person because a friends nephew is one of the shows producers. He does treat his crew well, so much of what he does on the radio is 'schtick'. Though I don't doubt his jealousy.
I feel he's incredibly lucky to be able to make career out of putting down others. He's like Madonna...in the way he surrounds himself with talented people...writers etc. He sure isn't talented in the sense of TRUE comic genuises such as Richard Pryor & Woody Allen!
I've been listening to Stern on & off for years, his whole schtick is based on his jealously of others, how he grew up a nerd....and now because of his success ....he's got 'hot' chicks getting naked for him all the time. Glad he realises it's because he's famous, women wouldn't be looking twice at him if he weren't "Howard Stern - King of All Media"! loool
His stuff is very basic 'revenge' humor, not much more. I
He's always ill prepared for interviews with most of the celebrities, he knows very little about his guests backgrounds. The inevitable 'sex' questions will be asked etc....so he might as well be interviewing anyone....the results are always the same...finding out about a celebs sex life.
He's clearly jealous of anyone possessing your talent, charm & great looks. Not to mention you marrying Carmen, that's a given!
What pisses me off about Stern, is his lack of respect for most of his celebrity guests. Many celebs are gracious enough to come on to his show, they play along with his nonsense......then he can't wait to put them down when they aren't on air to defend themselves.
That said, there were some flashes of brilliance years ago on his show.....when they were actually doing characters & sketches...now he's just coasting. It's the usual parade of wanna be pornstars, strippers etc. Hey....whatever rocks your boat. lol
take care,
itanja

So it wasn't the SITE that was down for repairs, it was DAVE!!! I'd like to think that I was half-right, but I think half-assed is closer to the truth..
Todd Solondz is seriously disturbed, not that it's a BAD thing, check out Welcome to the Dollhouse, it was almost too painful to watch that poor girl, but I think the guys that made Napoleon Dynamite might have drawn SOME inspiration from that flick
I remember when my son was a baby, and whenever he got the flu, stomach or otherwise, they said to me, put him on the BRAT diet, in Gary Busey anagram speak that stands for Bananas ,Rice, Apples, and Toast..you know, I'm here to help.

Hey Dave love the Howard answer!!!! good to know your ok now, was curious when I saw the "out for a few days" sign, speaking of crazy dreams...I've had horrible nightmares for the past three nights now...some freaky looking thing like a mix of jeepers creepers and Stephen King's "It" that's taunting me, and noone else see's this thing but me...I mean I wake up really terrified too..turnin on the lights type shit!! I think it's the teeth and eyes that are getting me, do u ever wake up like "Oh Shit" WTF was that about????

D-dogg, trust me on this one- the gatorade isn't good unless you're really active and exerting yourself.. your best bet is lots of plain old water and a well balanced meal if you can take it in without barfing it up. If you're dehydrated, gatorade will make it worse because of the sugar and artificial color and all that. Pedialyte is your best bet for dehydration from diarrhea.
I also recommend all natural whole fruit popsicles to keep cool in this heat :0)
Hope you're feeling better tomorrow. If so, see you at the Rockstar taping!

Dave, I hope that you and INXS are going to get more "critical" in your comments.
Critical, as in: honest, constructive, focused comments.
(Not mean comments like Simon Cowell.)
"Critical" = "helpful".
Seriously.
Because, so far, when you don't like something about a performance, you just hint at shit, which is frustrating for the performers.
Last week, you asked Ty, "Do you have a theater background?"
As a viewer at home, I interepreted that comment (and your body language) as being negative. Obviously, you weren't jazzed with his performance. You didn't like his style that night.
Such a comment/question left him flapping in the breeze, guessing at your true meaning.
So come out and say, "Ty, your performance was a little too theatrical for my taste. It's too much. Try using it sparingly. For some songs, maybe you can just stand in one spot, and sing the song---looking cool and letting the vocals do their job."
[Perkins said something similar on his blog: "Ty's theatrics were a tad played out (no pun intended). Just sing it bro."]
Focused, constructive criticism.
Instead of innuendo.
The same with your comments on Jessica's "Purple Haze".
Explain WHY the song wasn't right for her. (In your opinion.)
Is her voice not suited for Hendrix?
Or did she try to sell it too hard?
What was your real criticism of her "Purple Haze"?
Specifics, man.
Specifics.
If you guys don't start being more honest + critical, the performers are just standing there, struggling to guess what the hell you really mean.
And that is more cruel than just giving it to them straight.

Dave,
INXS is great. M. Hutchence is one of a kind.
These performers, not being disrespectful, are not right for INXS. Most of them perform in a forced manner. The stage presence of many of them is hard to watch.
Great advice from everybody would be telling them to be themselves. Does INXS want to create a performer or someone who is already ready?
They really should find an established artist. If Ian from the cult/doors was available he might fit. What about george michael or the lead singer from concrete blonde? anyway, thats my distant opinion,
good luck with the show

Dave, glad you are feeling better--we were worried about you!!! Just rest up for another day or so, and Jezebel's right--the BRAT diet will help your system ease back into working normally again.....and as for stuff to drink, try 7-UP (or Diet 7-UP)--it's easy on the stomach, without the dyes of other drinks....
Looking forward to another week of "RockStar"....and we should figure out a signal you could send us 6767'ers--maybe you could tug on your ear to say hi to us????

Joshua-there is such a thing in TV land called Editing. I doubt we see the entire interaction after each performer finishes cause if we did, the show would probably be 2 hours long. As more and more get eliminated, I'm sure the time alloted for the review of the performances will grow.
Posted by: Lyn at July 24, 2005 05:56 AM
ahhhh,Elizabeth, your post is music to my ears..Jezebel is right, I NEVER tire of seeing that.
Dave, Dave, Dave..hope you are feeling better,my son and I are hooked on sports movies, we even like the original Mighty Ducks!!, but our all time favorite is Blue Chips, with Shaq refusing to take the SAT because it is 'culturally biased'. We also like Hoop Dreams, because it WAS reality, and Rudy, because what's not to love about a future hobbit!
Okay, enough about me (HA!, that'll be the day!) I was watching the new reality show INKED on A and E..hmm, I mean, I know you got your last few tattoos there, but I'm hoping it wasn't DIZZLE!!
Have you seen the show, INKED? Corey Hart is the executive producer, have you met him? and one more thing, if you ARE watching Surreal Life this season, do you care to comment on Janice Dickinson's behavior?
I know she has called into CFR before, and I used to think she was pretty cool, but my opinion of her changed greatly after hearing her refer to a mentally challenged bowler as a "retard"...sigh...
hey family, have a great day!!

Question or 2 for Dave:
1. Will Camp Freddy be releasing an album?
2. Did you think of trying out for rockstar:INXS?
3. Have you read "Whore's" yet?

"Sometimes my sense of humor is so inside, that it backfires."
Man oh man, can I relate to THAT statement! I'm the queen of saying jokes that nobody gets but me. Glad to see I'm in good company. :)
I'm also glad that you - and the site - are up and running again. You deserved a break, that's for sure. Sometimes there's nothing more therapeutic than sleeping, lounging, and the boob-tube.
RE: Howard Stern... I think that Dave and Itanja said it all. He is what he is. Typical lowbrow, macho, cookie-cutter humor; the same old comments and questions and material over and over again. But he gets 'played' just as much as he 'plays' others, because all of these guests are getting the exposure they want. (Which is a whole other discussion.) It's a twisted symbiotic relationship.
Anyhow, I hope all of you have a WONDERFUL day.
Love,
-Denise

Dave! I have a great idea! LOL yeah like you'd want a great idea from a fan but I'm an older, wiser fan...here goes; it's obvious that J.D. is very "right" for the band but how about this, TWO lead singers; J.D. and Daphna would be dynamite together! What a chemistry..INXS would hit new highs with a duo..remember how duos ruled the Motown era..people love chemistry..I was mesmerized watch Snoop Dog with a fiery siren wailing behind him, what a teaming that was! Bet J.D. and Daphna would be equally compelling!!

Mr. Navarro... it's not always all about your wife, although she is a great beauty. I'm sure Mr. Stern is a bit crushed out on you because you do present in such a great pacakge... He wishes he could be as fab and cool and suave as you...
Posted by: jai at July 24, 2005 11:44 AM
Lyn, of course there is editing on RockStar: INXS.
They edit most of the performances---- to cut them down to three minutes each. As more performers go home, let's hope they start showing all the songs in entirety.
Don't you think if Dave had already been direct and critical, that they'd have shown that?
The "Reality Show" editing philosophy is to enhance conflict + negativity. To focus on the drama.
Why do you think they're using the inflammatory J.D. comment in advertising/promo spots now? They're trying to stir up shit and get viewers to watch.
Of course reality shows use editing.
Still, what we've seen so far is Dave and INXS boys being super-polite and pretty indirect. Not because the editors didn't include it. But because Dave and INXS were being polite and indirect.

Dave, how awful to feel that sick. Just got back from Philly and wondered if you ate at the same restaurant the 13 of us did because 9 of us were sick before the night was over! (It may have been being at a water park in 94 degree temperature, overcrowded and for $3 you could get a glass of ice with weakly carbonated water in it)
So with Rock Star, how did they pick the contestants? I don't remember hearing or reading how that was done. And do you know if there will be an album by this groups such as AI does that raises money for charity? I know I have my favs and hope to be hearing more from them.
Now get yourself better, okay?
Always,
me

Hope you get better soon :)I've got a quick question for ya... my boyfriend is thinking of stretching his nipples to a higher gauge, did you have to do that or did you get it pierced at the guage it is now? If you did stretch them, how would you compare it to the pain of getting them pierced?
BTW... I totally agree, Howard is completely into your wife :)

Hey Dave sounds like you're feeling better which is always a plus. A friend of mine was at Rockbar or Rokbar (don't know which one it is) the other night and said that you are part owners with Tommy Lee... This might be a stupid questions since I am on here all of the time. But are you a part owner of the bar? Just curious. I am actually aiming to go Thursday night. Until next time..

Hey Dave!
Glad to hear you're feeling better! I was sick yesterday- it sucks.
I can relate to the "inside jokes" thing...the way I figure it there are two kinds of people in life- those who get the joke and those who don't- most people don't. I've just learned to be ok with being the only person in the room laughing- at least I know I'm funny! LOL! ;)
Rock on!

Twisted Agel.. Nipple rings are easy to stretch.. I have em! It doesn't really hurt.. I notice mostly that after I go up a size it feels "tight" for awhile.. Just do it slowly a little at a time and he'll be fine.
Dave, Glad your getting better. It sux being sick :(

Hola!
So nice to find a cybe cafe here in Margarita after a long week in the jungle of the Grand Sabana! Hello goes out to Maria! Such a beautiful country Maria! I am staying at La Playa Agua and loving the heat and the water! I am covered in bites from the tour that itch so bad. I have a tube of Andantol that is providing some relief.
Dave, sorry to hear you are ill!
I am off to MSN to check out whats goin on with rockstar right now! Will check in again later if I can pull myself away from the beach and pool!

Hello everyone I am new to this site. Only discovered it after reading Dave's book and researched him on the net. I live in Australia and am in my last year of uni doing my BA of Media. Anyway I find Mr Navarro a truely inspirational and facinating human being and because of this i am going to join the panic community. If only we could all overcome our addictions and fears the world would be such a better place. So catch ya all soon ciao!

dave: entering a sweat lodge makes you mediate and sweat out the toxins, much like a woman's menstrual cycle, that's why you felt spiritually awakened. if you want to experience a real sweat lodge out here in saskatchewan, let me know, i think i can hook you up. rock on brother, glad you are feeling better.

dave -
if you were forced to choose between eternal abstinence or a world without music, what would you choose? (note: killing yourself is not an option. :P)

I'm totally with you about the sweat lodge thing! A friend of mine is actually doing the sundance right now, 4 days of no food or water, and constantly dancing the whole time. And at the end they get their chest pierced with some kind of bone. I can understand the piercing part, but the rest of it sounds so alien to me. Oh well, as long as they understand it that's all that counts. Also, I think you should totally go for the sappy line, maybe sqeeze out a tear or something. Seeing you trying to cry on tv would be absolutely hilarious. I would never get over it because it would be so good. Thanks for the updates, dave. Hope you feel better.
Posted by: gracefil-assault at July 26, 2005 12:25 AM
I thought the Sundance was banned? Or the tribes that did it weren't allowed to anymore?
Anyway, who's running the "Sundance"? Surely not a plains tribe?! Oo confused human being
Posted by: ylais at July 26, 2005 12:33 AM
What I was trying to say, is it was banned at some point. I know that you are allowed to practice these ceremonies, rituals now. But I also know there are a lot of non-plains Indians, I mean "white" people doing this type of thing, and claiming it's really Indian/Native American, when it isn't.
So my real question is who is running this Sundance? Is your friend a Lakota?
Posted by: ylais at July 26, 2005 01:46 AM
I really hope you are getting better,it sucks to come here to see whats up only to find that nothing has changed,if i had a life it probably wouldn't suck so bad..please get better, our love goes out to you, maybe if we all send our get better energy to you,you will fell better faster?always love~~Shellee
Posted by: LivingDeadChick at July 26, 2005 06:09 AM
the sundance is a semi-secret ceremony, you must be invited to watch it and participate in it. it happens here still (saskatchewan), but it is for men only. kind of like a right of passage, meaning you are a man now. the plains indians were only allowed to have pow-wow's in public starting in the 1970's. they were oppressed before that.

Well, i think he acted how the "network" Wanted him to, maybe he should be an actor instead?I'm just that way, think the worst possible thing in any situation.it's t.v.,they have to think of something for us to watch, cuz maybe the real reality t.v. is just too boring, that's why i don't like to watch the stuff,it just seems to me that everyone is acting, playing a part cuz they are being paid, but that's just how they come across to me,except Andy Dick...his show was just funny as hell, the ASSistant,on MTV...i wisj they had reruns of stuff like that and Dave's Show....always in love shellee
