House Day
Sad to see Daphna and Heather go. Contrary to many reports, I did not apologize to Marty last night. I still stick to my guns that his vocals weren't all that great, but I was giving him props for listening to Tim and Gary during the stage craft clinic. He put on a much better performance in terms of stage presence. Vocally, I still had some issues. Today I go to the mansion and hang with the kids while they attend another clinic. It's cool to see how they are doing and find out where their heads are at. I'm sure many of them are still stung from last night's elimination. I don't take part in the band's deliberations so I don't ever know the outcome of the vote until the audience does. As shocked as I was, I agree that is was simply a fair move. Neither seemed right for the band, but I sure wish them the best of luck in the future. They are both talented at what they do.
Robert C and I are working hard to give this site a face lift... And when I say "Robert C and I", I mean Robert C.
Camp Freddy - will be making an appearance at an X Games party on Friday, August 5 at the House of Blues in West Hollywood, California.
TPC - Lots of exciting business stuff with papers and people and opinions and offices and e-mails and faxes and counterproposals and lawyers and fees and mixes and additional cooks in the kitchen etc... You know, the rock and roll dream! HAHAHA.

I didn't get to see Tuesday's performances because of a major storm knocking out all the power here for the better part of 8 hours that night... I actually didn't get to see any of the show this week. I'm a little sad to hear that Daphna is gone...
Anyway, have a great night, Dave! :)

I felt sorry for those who were eliminated last night as well.
Even though it's obviously not a fit for INXS, it must be a little disheartening for them.
I liked your comments about the booing. lol

Hi, Dave. It seems Wednesday's outcome was a shock to everyone!
Do you know if there will be any performance shows in which all contestants (not just the bottom three) sing INXS songs? And do you think that would be any more or less valid a test of who would be "right" for INXS than what they're currently doing? Thanks!

Dave - I totally agree with you that Marty's lyrics were weak, in fact, they were even weaker the 2nd time he performed. Neither Daphna or Heather were right for the band and I think that the faster they shed the dead weight the better. Time to get more face time for the singers that actually have a shot at it.

Hi everyone! I agree, Dave's comments about the booing were so cool/cute/so very Dave. I hated to see Heather go, I dig her whole package. Her voice rocks. Daphna is a really cool chick. I totally agree with the comment that Marty's performance was weaker last night, although unlike some, I did enjoy Wednesday's performance. Hope all is well, and tomorrow I will be in San Diego to see my beloved White Stripes and Garbage at street-scene.com and I am stoked! 'night all--- peace, ck

Dave,
I just finished your book and it answered alot of questions I had about you. I think it is very cool that you are so open to people who admire you so much. I also know that you hear, read, that all the time. But know that people are sincere when they say thank you for all that you do for your fans. I do have a couple things that I am curious about, do you and Carmen get together with any of your ex's? Does Carmen ever get uncomfortable when people talk to you about the stuff in the book? Like all the drug use and the hookers. And why didn't they hire Carmen to be your co-host for Rockstar? She is way cooler than BB. BB seems to be famous for being a prop, while on the other hand, Carmen actually has a personality and a sense of humor, and unlike BB, talent. Thanks again for the book and all you do!

Hmmm. I know this sounds dumb.. it's also odd that I can write to you like this. I always respected your music but didn't know much about you. Anyway when I started watching ROCKSTAR, I thought "My god, why have they got Dave Navarro." But in the weeks past, I have grown very fond of your thoughts and pressence. You seem like a really thoughtful and intelligent person, not to mention I love your clothes. And Camp Freddy Radio makes me laugh so much. I moved away from LA seven years ago, to often regret and somehow the show, your radio show and just your pressence has brought a lot of "home" back to me. It's made me remember part of me which I was searching for, and also brought out part of me. I apreciate it.
This sounds crazy, and even crazier because I am writing to you about it. But the simplicity of blogging allows me to do that.
So thank you.

"is there a contract clause that states you have to pay to be a rockstar?"
Oh my dear Kyle there are fees all over the place...
the recording advance they get from the record company is recoupable- they have to pay it all back in album sales. The band is also usually the one that pays for the producer(s). As far as artist royalties go, by the time they put in all these deductions for free goods, package cost, breakage, etc. they're not getting very much per record at all. This is why publishing is very important so they can collect mechanical, performance, synchronization, and print royalties whenever their music is sold or used. In other words, if you want to use their recorded music in any way (in your own composition or in a movie/tv), or play it publically on the radio or wherever, then you will have to pay a fee. Same thing for their printed songs in sheet music or folios- they get some change from that, too.
and i stress the word 'change'.
Fortunately this time they should have some negotiating leverage since they've already done a few successful albums.

Dave
To this point I agree with everyone they have let go. I also agree with your comment about Marty, as well as others above. The Wednesday performance was weaker too. I didn't think you apologized, you only told him he performed well, not sang well. Some of us picked up on your wording I suppose when you related to him.
I liked the last paragraph you wrote above as it's really nice to know that every career has it's downside! I got a nice giggle out of it. I work in accounting, a lot of downsides at times. The Rock and Roll Dream? It sounds like there are things about it that will make you toss and turn at night too.

dave youre awesome on Rockstar. that show could have been cheesy in so many ways, but they did everything right. everything. from paying for the right songs, from the set to the mansion, from the kickass house band to the decent singers... right up to getting you and brooke. who would have thought that trying to get the new singer of a band i hadnt thought about in so many years would be a really good tv show. but its just that, really good, and you put the rock in rockstar. im sure the inxs dudes are cool, but other than that one dude's sparks moustashe, theyre a little lacking in the rock dept.
i hope you feel better soon, and keep up the great work.

Goodmorning, Dave!
Good luck with all the business jazz for TPC.
Will there be a new CFR tomorrow night?
Lovin' the show! Of course you look marvelous - but you knew that already, didn't you?
Always,
me (not the same Angel as the earlier post)

I just find it adorable that you still refer to the RS:INXS contestants as "kids", when knowing the majority of those "kids" are only a couple years younger than yourself. :-)

I missed the show but I had a good reason. The anklebiters I'm teaching Shakespeare to at summer theatre camp had their performance. It was preshus.
You're a really good writer. I enjoy your updates and not just because you're DN. You funny boy. I'd read your blog even if you weren't famous. ;)

Dave,
After the other nights show surprise, do you think that there may be some rather bigger surprizes to come? This all got me thinking last night, what if they, INXS continue on with this show and realize, "oh my, I don't think any of these contestants would be right for the band". Is there a legal issue that says they have to choose one? Hmmm....
Have a good day.

Hey Dave-
When you guys write songs, do you write the music first or the words? Does it depend on the song? Or do different bands youve been in do it their own way? What are your thoughts on it?
Posted by: rob at July 29, 2005 06:25 AM
You sound a little down lately. I hope none of this crap is getting to you. Or maybe you're still under the weather? Either way, sending hugs...don't work too hard, (yeah right) seriously, don't want you to burn out. Now that I'm done playing doctor...
I agree that Marty's performance was weaker the second time. I have to admit though, I liked the first one, of course, I'm no Nirvana officianado like you. ;)
I think the site is great as is, but it'll be fun to see what new things you two come up with. You are the world's coolest rocker.
Thanks!
Love & Peace,
Tracy :)

I have to admit that even though I have always loved INXS as well as Red Hot Chili Peppers I was very hesitant about RS (I was afraid of it having ANY relation to American Idol LOL). However after being forced to watch the show and give it a chance, I have to say we have a new favorite in the house. Your comments are always insightful and usually dead on. Actually your presence gives the show an authenticity it would have probably lacked. Also I just recently found your blog and it is awsome.

Dear Dave:
Do you hear music in your head? I know some of the songs Ive created have popped into my head other places than those I write music. Any songs that are examples of this youve recorded for public? I had a great song down at work last night to put down today but had no paper...it will come back....aggrrr! I was so excited, and then POOF!!!
Keep pen n paper nearby always!!!!!(Do you do this?)

Morning,
I agree with those who say that Marty's vocals on "Lithium" were much better the first time around. All in all, though, I think he basically did the song justice both times.
You know, I often wonder whether Kurt Cobain's spirit is somehow looking down on the world... and if so, what he would think of music today? Would he be annoyed that people are covering his songs, or would he be flattered and totally OK with it? I'm thinking he'd be like, "whatever, dude".
I always had the sense that others took Kurt much more seriously than he took himself. Beneath all the so-called "angst" and flannel, he seemed like a pretty cool, easy-going guy.
But I digress...
Dave, good luck with everything, including the business stuff. (Yuk.) I hope you have a nice, relaxing weekend. Sounds like it's been a tough week.
Take care.
Love,
-Denise
