A Time For Heroes

Newlogojpegheroes_05_smcopy_000Today I am going to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Family Carnival and Picnic. I am to be running the dunk booth for a while. It's kind of overcast here in LA so I don't know how much action I'll get at the booth. 100% of proceeds from the event benefit the Foundation's lifesaving pediatric programs. Carmen and I have been going to this event for years and we are now on the honorary committee. I know she is bummed that she can't go as she is off in Toronto shooting a film. I'll be flying with Riss as my wing woman.

1. What charities do you donate the most time & money towards during the year?

I work with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation most often, but I also work with MAP, Step Up Women's Network and Cure Autism Now.

2. I think your insistence on doing TV shows instead of making astounding music does you no favors Do media stuff, sure, but at least back it up with music that's challenging and artistic.

Well, put it this way. I just enjoy doing different things. I have been in bands for over 20 years. I'm still in a band. A brand new one that takes a lot of time and dedication. To me, the music we are making IS astounding. I guess I'm not looking for favors, I'm just enjoying life and all it's opportunities. I never want to wake up at 60 and think, "God, I wish I had at least tried that thing I passed on, years ago."

3. Hey, can you talk a little bit about Rokbar?

Tommy is a partner is Rokbar Miami and it is a killer spot. We just decided to open one out here on the West Coast. A home away from home "where the freaks feel like stars, and the stars feel like freaks", to quote Neil Strauss.

Dave,
Did you feel the earthquake? It's on the news that a 5.5 hit southern Cali. What's it like being in an earthquake?

Posted by: Twisted Angel at June 12, 2005 09:41 AM

Now, for my *real* post....

I think that living your life that way ("I never want to wake up at 60 and think God, I wish I had at least tried that thing that I passed on years ago") is the best way to live....regrets are a terrible thing to have!

And Dave, enjoy yourself at the Elizabeth Glaser AIDS Family Carnival & Picnic....post a pic of you if you get dunked, willya??

Have a great day, 6767 fam....glad to see the good vibes flying around here these days....

Posted by: Elizabeth at June 12, 2005 09:46 AM

Hey Dave,

Hope you have a blast at the carnival and make a ton of money for the charity. I think it is very cool you and Carmen use your popularity to boost awareness to certain issues. I have a couple questions for you today.

1. Did that guy ever return the stolen piece of equipment from the CFR show on the 4th?

2. What was your first car?

3. Is there anything you get bummed about thinking back thinking you could have done it better?

Thanks,
Catiyana

Posted by: Catiyana at June 12, 2005 09:53 AM

Dave - I hope your birthday was great! I was away (actually in Cali...thankfully no earthquakes while I was there) and didn't get to send my good wishes on time. Happy Belated!

I hope the carnival is a great success...there are always great photos of that event floating around so hopefully we will get to see some of you.

I love your benevolent spirit. Your attitude inspires. I know people try to knock you down sometimes but I love how your just let it go...I am trying a little of that myself. And I am not just blowing smoke. Life is good.

Okay - quick question (which you have probably answered and I just missed): Do you enjoy watching any professional sports? I ask because I am a baseball junkie and got to see two games while in California...good times.

Ciao,

~ Susan

Forgot to ask one more.

Do you have any pen pals? or have you ever had one?

Oh yeah and I wish you luck on Tuesday about the LA weekly award for CFR!!

hey dave

im curious, "its better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all" true or false?

personally i think its false! i think that a person is actually better off never having loved someone than experiencing complete and utter heart break. but again, its just my opinion

Hey, Dave,

It is great how you give back to the community. And this is such a worthy cause. I wish I was out there at this time - I come from a family that travelled with the carnivals and I have vast knowledge on them. I am not a carnie. I am not a true gypsy. My dad owned a travelling restaurant and we set up all over western PA. Once, I got to sit on the dunk tank for a fundraiser. It was fun.

How much money was raised at the event?

Bless you!

Always,
me

Dear Dave,

I love you and I´m glad that you´re so happy and fullfilled ... but I won´t lie to you... I liked you a lot more when you were on drugs. You were darker, more mysterious, and a lot more interesting... And so was your music. It was brilliant and groundbreaking. Now it´s not as powerful. It has become "safe". It´s just "ok" music.

I´m so sorry to say all those things, but I had to. Is it just me or do you get this a lot??

all the best,
Mary K.

mary k thats a pretty fucked up thing to say. that dark and mysterious place came from a painfully agonizing personal living hell. i wouldnt wish that on my worst enemy and you wish dave was on dope again cuz you dont like his new sound? FUCK YOU BITCH! the man has grown and evolved in so many ways both musically and personally. drugs do not make the musician. yes they can have an effect on it. but dave is hands down the best guitarist today, and only getting even better because he's off the drugs. if jimi hendrix were alive today, he would have passed the torch. that has to be the worst negative opinion ive heard about him. im apalled at how fucked up that is.

Any thoughts?

Posted by: Junebug at June 13, 2005 03:14 PM

Hey everyone.
Dave, you are such an amazing person. I love you. Hipe everyone is well. As for me, not to happy. This weekend was tough, family problems and my new dude ended it with me. It Sucks!

So, my question is to Dave & everyone. Let me know what you guys think.

I have known this guy for a few years, he a friend of a friend. But I just started to notice him, asked him out and the past week things have been moving fast. We both noticed it, talked about it and decided to take it slow. Then on Sat he says that he likes me alot but does not want to date anymore. What up with this? I was in shock. His friends don;t even know what to say about it. What do you guys think? -CC

Posted by: Crecencia at June 13, 2005 03:58 PM

When you say, moved too fast, are you referring to physical intimacy? Could be that he didn't want to get serious, and just wanted the you know, sex, without the relationship.

of course, that's just my opinion, it happens to me all the time

jezzi(definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result....does that make me crazy?)

Posted by: jezebel at June 13, 2005 04:11 PM

Yeah, sex did happen. We talked about it and I told him that I wanted to take things slow. Then...on a date we went out to San Fransico and ended up going bar hopping on Haight St. So, we both ended up drunk and horny. After things were still cool. He wanted me to spend the night and I said no. But, he said that the sex had nothing to do with his decision.

He would be the one kissing me all the time and showing alot of affection in public. I held back cause it was a new relastionship. Do you think that sex was the issue?
I know it can f*ck things up.

Posted by: Crecencia at June 13, 2005 04:19 PM

I think that it was, I think that you both got caught up in the moment, and the thrill of something new and exciting, and in the cold light of day...you know, men don't mean to be dogs, but they really are, not that it's a BAD thing all the time, but they are, as a gender, better able to compartmentalize and differentiate physical from emotional intimacy..does that make sense. Just let it go for now, try not to think about it, and see what happens, you are a warm, vibrant, amazing woman, and there are plenty of other 'dogs' out there, right? Don't read a lot into it, what would George Costanza say, it's not you, it's me...well, it's not YOU!!!

lots of love to my sistah!!

WORD!!! this mary k chica is wack. she would rather him be sick, in poor health mentally and physically, destroying relationships with family and friends. not able to enjoy a sunny day, becuz he's locked up inside, to freeked out to go outside and enjoy beauty becuz he's shooting up dope every 5 or 10 minutes with the ever present risk of overdose and/or death. but all that is ok with her as long as his personal hell benefits her musical taste. how bout if he had died in that squatters flat when they left him on the sidewalk. there would be no music at all. there would be no panic channel. there would have never been a strays album/relapse tour. the perfect couple would never have been married. never have given us all the hope and inspiration that mr and mrs navarro give us all.never had contributed to so many worthy causes/charitys. and who is to say how much more good they will accomplish. how much more lifechanging music that is to come in the future. or how bout some perfectly beautiful and talented lil navarro rugrats? but mary k wishes for none of that. she wants him back on dope. why dont you go shoot up honey and record some dark and mysterious music. why dont you go slowly kill yourself with dope.
too many phenomenal musicians died from drugs or suicide far to young in their prime. almost daily i wonder what could have been if kurt cobain were still alive. the fact that dave is still alive, has bettered himself, and is living his dream, his happily ever after. the new music shows that. theres nothing dark and mysterious about happiness, being in love, and loving life. and the music reflects jus how good life can be, how good his life is now. how better of a person he is now than when he was on drugs. what kind of a person wishes the worst on someone for the sake of music. thats some selfish really wack shit.

To Dave:

I'm rolling the dice right now to see if you really answer e-mails. I used to manage a band in South Florida in the early 90's called "Wet Flower" we played many, many times with a band managed by John Tovar called "Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids" my band broke up because of some in fighting late 93' (You know about that from your experiences) but we know Brian very, very well and he knows us just the same. Now I don't know if you speak at all with him at this moment in time. But like I said I'm rolling the dice here. If you do have a way of getting in touch with him have him e-mail me back at raggrafs@aol.com he knows how good we are and Tovar always called me to open up for Brian's band. We are playing again and need a little help here. I'm bringing them up to NYC to play ASAP at clubs like CBGB, Red Lion ect. for a four week stretch. Like I said if you have any contact with him just mention my name Rhory from the band "Wet Flower" He'll know. I would appreciate this very much. Also If you want a CD to check out how good this band really is just e-mail me yourself and I'll send you one. I promise you will love it, it's right up your alley in musical taste. Our lead singer is a modern day Janis Joplin with a funked up band behind her that's tight as, well you can figure out what I was going to say. Thanks for your time and I hope I rolled an 11 yo.....

Well, I can appreciate Mary K's honesty. Though it seems to me that she may be in a "dark" place herself. Girls tend to be attracted to "dark, mysterious" men as she calls them, because they're there and want that someone to help them feel like it's okay to be there.

Mary K, it's called life. People go through it. People change. Had Dave remained in the state he was in and left this world that way, I'm sure you would think that he wasn't strong enough to overcome the challenges life presented him. But he did, because he is stronger than the drugs, the pressure of fans (such as yourself)society and then some. He knew he'd hear the "sell-out" shit time and time again. He still knows that. But it doesn't bother him, he's who he wants to be because HE wants to be. Not because anyone thought he was "cooler" then. I'm sure his wife, family, friends, and those who REALLY appreciate and love him and his art are completely happy with who he is today. The past is the past, it's okay to come to the present. People WILL and DO change. Someday when you grow up, you'll think back to even the little bit you said here.

*Much Love*

Y'know when TPC was announced and all the JA fans were like "Are you gonna be playing Janes' songs"? Well, I was reading about your former comrade's new band's lineup and I was wondering whether you thought it would be appropriate to ask Perry to give all the fans a spirited rendition of "More Than Words"???

On a more serious note for us sad, living in the past JA fans, d'you think we'll ever get any "new" music out from what's unreleased? I know y'all laid down an acoustic version of "Just Because" (sounded great when you played it like that live, btw). Is there much else left in the vault, or did you clear it all out for us with "Kettle Whistle"

Keep up the good work...

Posted by: edlong at June 14, 2005 05:58 AM

Hi all,

Tammi - There are pics? Dave got wet? Nice. :) Do you have a link?

Mary K - Just to add one more thing: Unless you know Dave personally, which most of us don't, you're not exactly in a position to assume that he was more likeable/mysterious/whatever on drugs. You may prefer the music or the "dark" aura that comes along with the drug thing... but that's an image and a fantasy that has nothing to do with him as a human being. There are fantasies and then there's real life...

Anyway, I hope everyone is well. Take care.

Posted by: Denise at June 14, 2005 07:35 AM

Hey 6767 family,

Allow me to put a diplomatic slant on the expression of Mary K's love for Dave's music as well as your interpretation of her expression:

Firstly, I tend to look for other examples/artists who are perfect illustrations of what Mary K has expressed, and the one who comes to mind most strongly is Scott Weiland from his Stone Temple Pilot days. It has been said over and over that Scott's vocal melodies and the music of certain STP albums was seriously drug-drenched and the fans of these particular albums (Core, Purple) were indeed hardcore fans who felt somewhat "let down" when the music was no longer heavily influenced by drugs. It's a sad, but true sentiment: The musicians get addicted to chemicals, in turn, the fans get addicted to the drug-influenced music.

Secondly, I think that it goes to show just how POWERFUL the music can be at times, especially when transmitted via the airwaves to many many people all over the world. Have you not unwittingly found yourself as a CO-DEPENDENT chained to the vibes and/or sound chemicals that your favorite artist has mass produced? In a way, it is like inhaling 2nd-hand smoke - you're not really the smoker, but you may be "Level 2 nicotine-dependent", so that when the smoke goes away, you too, experience withdrawal symptoms?

Heavy stuff to think about? Perhaps...

Thirdly, here is where the mature fan will have to ask themselves and their conscience, is it always an entirely good thing? Are you so addicted to the "sharing" of chemically-induced sound-vibes that you wish your favorite artist would get back on the drugs so as to appease you and "supply" you with the ear candy that you have so grown to love? It can be a difficult situation, can it not?

I think the answer is to find other more healthy/cleaner means of addiction that is not life-threatening, nor soul-threatening for that matter, and to allow the artist their personal space and growth. Because they are not expressing music just for our entertainment, they are expressing what is inside of their soul - and that may or may not align with what's inside of your soul. I think this illustrates how bands will lose fans in some demographic areas and gain fans in others.

Hope this analysis helps all.

Peace.

Posted by: misslead at June 14, 2005 07:38 AM

Or keep it simple and listen to the old recordings of the band. Damn, this is getting way too analytical. I enjoy listening to music, and I refuse to analyse why I enjoy it, or why I enjoy certain songs. No drugs needed to enjoy the music. And putting everything in life down to some kind of addiction is a ridiculously one-sided, closed view. (theory, theory, theory...)

Posted by: jezebel at June 14, 2005 08:01 AM

ylais - I am referring to the super "hooky" type of music. Not all music is laced with heavy chemicals. And who is saying that everything in life has it's source of addiction? No one. What I meant was specifically to Mary K - that she should find a suitable replacement for the addictive music that she once knew and loved so much, instead of subtly insinuating that her favorite artist return to a destructive habit. It could be that she finds a different music to fixate on, or that she changes and moves on with the new direction that Dave & Co. are going in.

And don't underestimate the power of the type of music I have analyzed here. Exactly what do you think people mean when they say something like, "Hey man, I'm gonna TURN YOU ON to some Hendrix" - it's all fun and games so long as the addictive-brain-type-personalities can keep it in perspective. But when young artists start living and breathing music 12-16 hours each and every day and get so totally wrapped up in sound-vibes that are too chemically strong, then reality gets distorted and dreamland starts to take over. For SOME, not all. And those SOME are the ones who may take the next step and look for TANGIBLE chemicals (other than the sound) to keep the dream rolling along at a smooth pace.

I personally think most music is really quite awesome and carries good messages and/or portrays the soundtrak of our lives. However, anything addicting to the point of destruction should be looked upon with at least some amount of caution. Again, only referring to the addictive-type personalities.

Okay, fire away. LOL.

I not 100% sure of this info or where I read it....I don't think Dave & Flea were actually in the studio with Alanis when they recorded their bits for that album. I think it was just Dave, Flea, the producer & the recording engineers. I also think Dave said he approached it like any other session work, just to do his best work for the day.

Hopefully, Dave will come here to answer your question.

Hi Dave,

EGPAF is a great cause. I've done fundraising that raised about $10,000 for them, and have been to their offices in Santa Monica to see how they operate. They do wonderful work.

I was wondering, do you think some of the celebs that attend the events, especially the up and coming personalities, are there just for the exposure? Time for Heroes and and Kids for Kids get a lot of media coverage. Does it bother you that people seem to care more about the charities that celebrities are involved with? I mean, it's great that celebs have the power to bring awareness to these causes, but doesn't it also tell us that there are a lot of shallow people out there who probably wouldn't give a crap, only that their favorite TV person, musician, actor/actress is involved with a particular organization?

I've done a lot of volunteer work for small and lesser known charities, and it seems to me that money only starts rolling in when someone with a name gets involved or donates something. That's not to disparage any time spent by public figures working with charities. But it's just a fact.

By the way, I do applaud both you and Carmen for your longtime commitment to EGPAF. I worked with a woman named Sherry there a few years back and she was wonderful.

Dave, I am a huge fan of you and steve stevens playing. what would you say the technical requirements are to play a "mean" guitar like you guys do?

Patrick

ps. i just got your dvd, and the guy interviewing is incredibly lame!

Hey Dave
What's your favourite video game?
What do you think of Adriana Lima?
Also do you still have the stuff that you used to have on your old site? I remember you had these funny things you'd written and one of them was about this day you had where everything went wrong. It was really long but really funny. You had some other articles as well. If you have them could you put them on here? And you had these cool photos of you where you had fallen asleep standing up.
I used to go to your old site all the time when I was 14 and 15! I just found this blog a couple of weeks ago.

you probly already read that thing perry said about jane's only getting back together when it starts raining money, so now i no longer hope that the record execs will stick to there guns to protect the world from exposure to the channels crybaby muzak, i hope they dress you all up in goth gear, make videos with your famous husband, put you on trl and sell you to the kids by the bucket full.then maybe once youve drowned yourself youll do something amazing again, cos it would suck to get old and look back and think that you wasted your life being lame and doing reality tv.

xbabyx here's a link to the old Spread Entertainment /old 6767 website archives, not all of the pages are there. Though it seems the bulk of the site is there.

Hopefully you'll find what you're looking for. ENJOY~!

He everyone!

Can't wait to check out those pictures!

Itanja - read about Jagged Little Pill on MSN. How do you think and acoustic set would do? One of the major music chains in Canada are supposedly pulling her music because she is to be realeasing this through Starbucks for like six weeks - and they aren't happy.

Wow, Itanja, thank you so much for posting that link! How nice to reminisce! I remember the site coming out when I first got online with my good ol' webtv, and staying up until the wee hours of the morning to explore all the little nuances tucked away here and there. It was a lot of fun to look back on it now... I think I'm going to have to link that on my site.

Spreading the love,
Deena

Dave ~ Did you get those Mary Kate and Ashley dolls you wanted for your birthday?
(Did anyone send Dave those dolls?!)

Patrick ~ Too right. Steve Stevens is underrated, (and he's got great stage presence). We should have a quiz here, and ask who knows who Steve Stevens is? No googling for the answer!!! Itanja, I'll bet you do! :D But shhhh! Let's see who else does.

Posted by: ylais at June 15, 2005 06:06 PM

Ylais - Steve Stevens was Billy Idol's guitarist, right? Do I win a prize? :)

Posted by: Denise at June 15, 2005 06:16 PM

Hi Lisa,

Funny you mentioned 'Stevie Steve'!

Years ago, I think this was back in the late 80s/early 90s...I was looking to buy a high end Nakamichi (sp?) cassette deck at some expensive NYC audio store. Steve was there with his with his wife or girlfriend. They were all decked out in black & leather, looking very cool.

They kept looking at me. ????? I was somewhat freaking out as they approached ME! My friend who was with me was wondering if I knew them personally. I told her: "No, but I know WHO he is!"

His wife/girlfriend wanted to know where I got my iridescent grey/green raincoat! (It's lined in a leopard print material. Many people had stopped me when I wore that coat!) They were both rather nice & we chatted a while.

They thought it was by some Japanese designer.....Comme de Garçons or Issey Miyake....looool I told them it didn't have a label, it was some vintage raincoat I got at a local clothing store where I was doing window display!

That incident was one of my 'brushes with fame' in NYC~! lol

I recently saw Stevie & Billy on 'Conan O Brian', they both still sounded & looked great.

take care,
itanja

Hows every1 in 67land, hope you are all doing as freat as I'm feeling at the moment. Just got back from my honeymoon in Barcelona and Salou. One of the biggest hotels in Barcelona was called, believe it or not, Hotel De Navarro, which made me think, Has Dave ever stayed at this hotel, is it owned by a family member, and does he get good discount if he stays there. To all those who sent good vibes my way for my TDDUP day, thank you all the day exceeded all my expectations.

On the subject of Steve Stevens, I have to confess I never was a big fan, but one of the first guitar parts I learned to play was the "Top Gun Theme" which I consider to be one of his best guitar parts.

To all UK 67ers, did any of you manage to go to Download at Donington this past weekend, apparently Anthrax and Velvet Revolver were absolutely awesome, having seen both bands I'd have to agree. To anyone going to see Motley in the CIA in Cardiff, this weekend, see you there(I'll be the one at the front Screaming like a fucking lunatic!)

Be safe Be happy

Dave - are u ever gonna answer my question about a song called BLENDER which was reviewed in 1995 as a track off OHM, but never turned up on the album.Thank you in advance. Even if you don't answer this q, you are still the fucking man!
