Sunday 1

TDDUP Episode 3 and out takes are now available on 6767 TV. Also, last night's CFR will be loaded within the week.

1. Dave, it seems (correct me if I am wrong) that throughout most (if not all) of your musical career you've had this problem with addiction. In that time you've managed to release a no. of albums (Some of which were even solo) as well as countless collaborations of sorts and my question to you is just how much did the drugs/addiction get into the way of your career and I guess life in general? It doesn't "seem" as though it put a damper (though I'm not saying that it did not) too much on your music, musical endeavors throughout the years and countless performances as well. The reason for my asking is having battled an addiction (and still to this very day to a degree) with narcotic painkillers, I can relate although it never quite seemed to stop or hamper my life in any way until more recently. I still played music, worked out, etc., as always, but until more recently I've noticed things starting to slowly spiral out of control. I guess I'm trying to ask how you battled such a severe (unless it wasn't "that" severe ... was it?) addiction and managed to cut all the albums, play all the shows, collaborate with all the other musicians and basically live you life as though everything is fine and dandy? I'm finding it more and more a problem to function "normally" as each day passes and I honestly do not know why "all of the sudden" it's now this way? I wish I knew how you did it?

This is a very interesting question. And as much as I see your point, I have to say a few things. My addiction to drugs played an enormous role in the demise of some of the projects I was involved in. I certainly contributed to the destruction of some really great things. Sure, some work got done, but the continuous struggle with day to day things, relationships and work load made for a very unhappy way to live out my dreams. I had a complete lack of spiritual connection, health problems and negativity within my personal life as well as my professional projects. I can see how from the outside looking in, things might have looked like they were all right. Work did get done, tours and lots of music, but the truth is that I can only imagine how much more would have gotten done without the drugs, as well as how much more I could have enjoyed it all. In addition, my romantic and family relationships suffered dramatically as well. Several overdoses, canceled shows and emotional wreckage. Hospitals, lost trust and faith... General indifference and insanity. Things were not just fine and dandy. I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to work with some really great and inspiring people. If it wasn't for them, I would not have been able to carry on alone. So now, years away from that life I really embrace the opportunities put in front of me. How did I do it? I allowed others to help me. Got off the drugs and began to embrace a spiritual way of life. There is obviously no one way to do this so I chose what worked best for me. I have never in my life been happier.

If you would not be the musician you are, what would you be and where?

Right on Dave!!

Posted by: Colleen at May 29, 2005 11:23 AM

It's amazing how you own up to mistakes you've made and the fact that you've hurt and lost the trust of people. Many people, especially ones who haven't even done drugs, aren't willing to own up to their mistakes and that makes for a sorry existence. Kudos for being able to bite the bullet and really get to the root of your problems and work them from the inside out. This is why you're an admirable person and why so many people look up to you.

Thank you! Much Love

-Emily

Dave,
You say in your most recent post that you sometimes imagine how much more you could have done professionally, had you not been on drugs for so long. My question is this: Would jane's have been the groundbreaking act that it was without the drugs? It's surely no coincidence that artists often become less creative/inspiring/interesting (in a musical sense) when they go clean. Just look at you and perry. I'm sure you're both happier in your own selves than you ever have been but the mystique/chaos/insanity and creative vision that once made Jane's so essential back in the late '80s and early '90s was sorely missing both on the Strays record, as well as the live performances. Do you think the lack of the trippy druggy lifestyle in which the comeback was done contributed to that? If so, then surely it is the case that your being into drugs and hanging out with people who were into drugs back in the day is inextricably linked to your success as a musician. What do you think?
Cheers.

Dave, you've been through some hard times with your drug addiction, and slowly you came through it. You are truly awesome to look up to. Being with Carmen must be a tremendous benefit for you as well.
If other people are having problems, there is always somebody around to help you and get over things.

Dave,
Thanks for your honesty in answering those type of questions. You never know how many people will be encouraged by your words to find a life where they have "never been happier".

I'd have to diagree with the misconception that you have to be on drugs to create interesting and dynamic artistic works. I don't do any drugs, and I consider myself to be a very creative person. Creativity is something you work on and practice; why do you think musicians spend so much time in the studio perfecting their music? And if Dave's sobriety is stunting to musical creativity, why is so much that we hear from The Panic Channel kicking ass?
Just a thought.
And good for you Dave. I'm sure everyone here, myself included, is happy that you were able to pull out of your addiction and are still here to deliver such beautiful and amazing music.

Dave,
any recollection on who this '(cash in) Miss. Smith' is in the lyrics to "Mountain Song"?

Posted by: skot at May 29, 2005 12:14 PM

Dave, I think your truthfulness is awesome.
You guys getting punk'd was f#$%*! funny.

I have a question for you
Do you believe if a couple has a child and don't get along all the time, they should split? or stay togeather for the childs sake.

Did it screw you up at all that your parents split?
Even though you are close to them.

thanks,
matt

hey Dave

South africa's FHM top 100 sexiest women in the world has just come out!

Carmen is number 17!

this is the write up they said about her...

"Timeless classis. Like boerie to a braai(that is south african slang meaning like meat at a BBQ) and Heineken at a rugby match, so is Carmen to FHM's 100 sexiest. And if anything's better than one hot blonde, its two - which is what you can expect from the movie Dirty Love, where she co-stars with Jenny McCarthy. Even though Carmen is hitched to Janes Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro, brilliantly she's still free to flaunt her assets, which is why we love her so much!"

just thought id tell you, Dave.

stay well

Hi Dave, Congratulations on the MAP Award. I'm so glad that you're keeping yourself busy with different projects. I'm also glad that you're winning the fight against drugs. I know it's not easy. I have a personal request. I hope you can help. I'm trying to contact Jerry Cantrell and I'm not having any luck. His website doesn't offer an address. I'm asking you because I know you're friends with him. I have Muscular Dystrophy, and recently, I've experienced a decline in my health. His music has helped me get through it. I want to express my love and appreciation to him, but I don't know how to contact him. I'm sorry to bother you with this. Any suggestions? Thanks Natasha

i simply thought the proper channels should be made aware of the blatantly false facts that were being stated as true on this particular website, so that they can promtly and expediantly sue for slander and whatnot.

Posted by: dast poopinschtein at May 29, 2005 06:24 PM

I have seen and read that site and I gave them a "comment" or whatever they had and corrected them by saying what is true. What they have written could be a simple mistake, maybe they dont know Dave well enough to know what true about him and what isnt.

Posted by: ..::Jess::.. at May 29, 2005 06:56 PM

well if they're not sure then they shouldn't be posting it as fact, all around the globe on the net. I think Dave should sue, Carmens shoe-fund could always use more donations.

NNDB is a pretty craptaculous website KNOWN for it's constant mis-information, period.

Why would anyone go there to get info on Dave, when all you have to do is ask HIM right here?

Dave is pretty honest and straight forward with his fans, he seems to answer any question within reason......

Or if you don't want to ask Dave directly here at the blog.....go to a reliable 'Dave info' site as 'Dave Navarro Is God' for answers to your questions.

As for Dave's siblings, Dave actually has TWO younger half brothers.

hey dave

as an old fan, i continued to be impressed with your continuing career. your playing (particularly on "ritual..") was so visceral for me as it seemed like the soundtrack to my life @ the time. it's inspiring.

so much so that i'm in the process of recording my own record. we're basically the same age, (you're a yr. older). recently there's been a lot of haterade as people are always discouraging me from pursuing my music. i don't listen but, i hear them like buzzards squawking continuously in my ear. even my engineer,(a berkelee grad). i enjoy a pretty decent living as an art director/graphic designer here in NYC, (i work @ VH1). i don't have any illusions about becoming the hottest shit out there. but i can still do my thing. yet, s'hard to remain resilient & focused. can you offer me any words of encouragement. t'would mean a lot.

Hi Dave, i love how you play guitar and I feel very happy to see you so sure and strong in life.

Can you tell me if the cancelled show of Jane“s in Madrid in the european tour 03, was because of problems in the band? me and my friends were very unhappy, we had tickets to go to the show. I missed the opportunity to see one of my favorite bands and one of the best rock guitar player ever.

Happy Memorial Day, everyone. (And for the non-Americans, celebrate life anyway!)

DAVE - Thanks for that heartfelt post. I'm so sorry that you had to go through all of this pain in your life. You've clearly learned from your experiences and emerged a better, stronger person. And you've made - and continue to make - amazing, inspiring, thought-provoking art in the process.

As you said, there IS no singular answer to ANY of our problems. We all have crosses to bear, and the best we can do is to find a way to deal with it without hurting others - and without hurting ourselves. When the medicine turns to poison, it's time to try a different approach. That much I know.

Anyway, take care of yourself and others, everyone.

Love,
-Denise
