Sunday 10
Last night's CFR is up on the Panic Channel Radio...
RE: Mail and IMs. I honestly cannot answer every single personal message I get, but I do read each one and appreciate hearing from you all. TPC has been super busy trying to create music and our spare time has become more and more short.
1. Dave, can you see The Panic Channel being a massively successful band?
Oh wow, I don't know. I mean, massive? I honestly couldn't say. I'd love to be heard and make a living, but the truth is that we are still in the phase where we just can't believe how cool it is that we are making a record.
2. Did you quit smoking Dave?
Yes. This is the fourth day I have gone without smoking. I'm using the patch, which makes for really cool and vivid dreams. It's going OK, so far, but I have to go day by day. After 22 years, it's kind of a tough one. I have kicked harder stuff, but it's not like you walk into a bar and people are slamming heroin everywhere.
3. Have you ever rocked the stage with an erection hidden behind that fret board of yours?
Me? Never...
4. Dave, remember your cribs where you showed off the picture that Manson painted of you, if I recall it was really dark and depressing, was that painted during your time of addiction?
It was indeed, however, with Manson behind the brush, I'm sure it would have come out the same if he painted it today.
5. I was wondering if you are familiar with Mark Ryden and his work.
I am. Not only do I love his work, he painted the One Hot Minute album cover. I have a tattoo of the fairy from his painting on my right arm.
6. Would you ever invite or hope to jam with Eddie Van Halen with Camp Freddy down the road?
We have asked him in the past and schedules never aligned. He has a standing invitation to the dance.
7. How do you keep "it" where it belongs? i'm not tired yet (8yrs!!) but, spring in nyc is almost unbearable....what's your secret?
I just think it through. Imagine your girl as if she were 8 years old on a swing set. How could you hurt that little thing?
8. Leather or Vinyl??
I'd have to go with leather. It seems more timeless to me. Vinyl has kind of an 80's vibe to it, but it's great for the hardcore vegan.
9. Do you plan on reading the book WHORES?
I'll more than likely skim through it but I have a feeling I'll get plenty of highlights here.
10. Were you happy with how "Three Days" the dvd came out and do you have any plans to produce again?
No plans at the moment but I loved how that movie came out. It really captured how fun and insane that tour was.

Heyy Dave! Good morning to you. Dude I think thats crazy how you think about parts of the US, and the world being in different times. Like it's 1:30 here ((east coast)), but like 9 something over in the west coast, just some crazy stuff. I want sooo bad to go to L.A, well hopefully someday. Um dave, I have a question, but I wont ask because... it might hit something or it will be "unconfortable" for you to read so I wont do that to you. Lately, I've been loving the thought of getting a hold of a guitar that sounds just like yours but none of my friends are into that kind of stuff, and it would be expensive, and I just wanna play around with it and see how you see it and feel how you feel it, ya know. Anyways I've said enough, have a nice dayy!

Hey Dave.. I have heard that Andy Warhol is a favorite visual artist of yours, he is one of mine as well.. I was wondering if you are familiar with Mark Ryden and his work. His pieces are stunning and quite profound to me as I discovered this week in Pasadena. I personally recommend the work "Jimi Hendrix" .. it is quite amazing. Also, any word on the Miramax benefit on the 24th downtown. Have a nice smoke free morning.

Hey....there is another "Elizabeth" on the board (welcome BTW)....should I add my title, Princess, to make us more distinguishable (and it is truth in advertising)?
Dave, do let us know when Carmen's epi of "Joey" will be on--I will want to see it!
And do you help Carmen pick out any outfits? She is always so well put together!

What finally convinced you to try and quit smoking Dave? Did you just get sick of the habit or is this the result of the fact that you've been thinking about it for awhile and finally worked yourself up to it?

My wife quit cigs. in this way! She got a sandwich baggie and rationed herself 10 cigs. a day.She did this for 2 weeks and then began to cut it down week to week. Towards the end, she was down to 5 cigs. per day and she was so afraid of running out, she actually had "leftovers" every day. At that point she just dropped it. If patches don't work, try this way!!!
Posted by: Brian Lewis at March 13, 2005 11:35 AM
So is this day 4 of no cigarettes?
You have made a wonderful decision Dave! I am very proud of you and know you can do it!
Remember: the longer you stay away from the smokes, the less urge you'll have to smoke them. Then all that will be left is weening yourself of the patch...

Creative process question - when you're creating outside the practice room does it start with a riff, a melody in your head, pure chance/chaos? Different process with mellow tunes vs harder ones? Lyrics and music together?
If I can stop smoking weed, you can stop smoking cigarettes.

If DN's anything like me when he's sittin' in front of the computer,he'll be smoking his way through 20 cigarettes,a smoking habit is not just being addicted to nicotine, its the times and the places you usually light up,like first thing in the morning, after dinner, taking a break from whatever your doing, sitting in front of the computer, when your bored, because you've got nothing else to do with your hands, because your stressed,oh god,its endless. Its a fuckin' tough nut to crack.
I'm a smoker,a pretty heavy one too,i don't like it but i'm not motivated to do anything about it,i could see all the medical things of what its doing to my body,it would make no difference.
I'll quit when i'm ready, same as i've done with other things.

Good luck with the Patch...
I got tickets to see MOTORHEAD, MONSTER MAGNET & SLUNT for May 5th at BB Kings in NYC!!! I have never seen MOTORHEAD or MONSTER MAGNET perform live before.
I saw SLUNT about 4 years ago at Don Hills in NYC. They rocked! You should check out their site. http://slunt.net/
Here are my questions for today:
¿How great is Motorhead live?
¿Have you heard that the owner of CBGB's might close the club?
¿Have you read the AMERICA by Jon Stewart? I just bought it. I plan to read it this week.
¿Do you plan on reading the book WHORES?
Later,

What are you listening to right now?
Did you give The Mars Volta another swirl?

Dave,
I just watched the Till' Death Do Us Part episode where you are leaving on tour for 2 months and was wondering if it was staged. The suitcase you were "pretending" to pack looked suspiciously empty if you look close enough before you zipped it up. Sorry stupid question just curious.

hey dave.... when u started playing guitar how did you choose which effects pedals to buy and in what order. i recently got a DD3 only after ages of listening to (mainly yours) music with tons of delay on. but i wanted to get two like you to do that tearjerker thing. alas i cant afford it right away.
so i guess my question is, back in the day when you couldnt afford it. how did you build up your pedal board?

Dave!!! Good job, my friend! Did you know that although smoking is bad for sperm production, coffee actually makes sperm live longer and swim faster? I know, pretty random there, but I was watching the National Geographic Channel the other night, and that fact just reminded me of you...lol!!
Anyway, I am so proud of you, but if you are going to disregard the manufacturer's warning about leaving the patch on when you are sleeping, you at least should keep a dream journal, maybe could be a sitcom someday...Inside Dave's Dreams!!! Al Pacino-cartoon character-Tennessee!!
ok, here's a question for you? I know you have stated before that the opportunity to work with varied musical artists is an opportunity for you to grow and experience different things musically. Have any contributions you have made to The Panic Channel been a direct result of inspiration from these collaborations? I know that probably doesn't make grammatical sense, I am having problems with sentence structure today. I guess I wanted to ask if you've taken creative ideas from partnerships with Michelle Branch, Alanis, Mariah, and other girls and boys and noticed their influence on your own music...

Dave!
Congrats on the quitting smoking. I eventually hated the way I felt when I smoked. With every drag, I felt my throat drying up, my lungs getting tight, and my head beginning to pound. I just knew my body was telling me to move on.
Not to mention the fact that I know now, as a non-smoker for six years now, things smell much better when you can actually smell them! It's amazing to discover the tastes and scents that were always there but you could never sense.
A very proud fan here, Dave. Good for you.

Keep with the quitting - you'll be amazed at how well you feel, as well as how much better you sing (lung capacity, vocal range, etc).
I quit about five years ago. Still get random cravings every once in a while - mostly situational. Still one of the best things I ever did.
Hope to see TPC in Rochester when you tour!

Dave,
So amazing to hear you quit smoking. I was thinking about doing the same thing today - to make this pack my last. If for nothing else, I need my voice. I'm recording two v/o demos in a few weeks, plus I sing. What was amazing the last time I quit, was how fucking terrible it felt when I smoked again. It really is worth it to quit. I'm going to try the patch, I never have before. I could use some cool dreams.
Love & good luck!!!

dave, is there any way we could get another feed of the CFR recordings? When running under linux the flash player chops up the audio, sometimes mutes it all together requiring a restart or having to hit pause/play to fix it. Is this just being sourced from an MP3 on a webserver possibly, where we could just listen to that? bittorrent would be the way to get it out there, and everyone could listen and then share the bandwidth/distribution overhead as well, so your hosting site wouldn't have to shoulder all that. i would be more than happy to help w/ this in anyway so i could listen uninterrupted :)
i may look into just ripping the stream and putting out torrents for anyone interested.

All this quitting smoking talk has gotten my attention..I need to as well. Wellbutrin got me to quit for a month. Did you know there is Nicotine Annonymous! The patch gave me anxiety, esp the 20 mg one.
Dave-I think Andy Warhol would be jealous of present day documentation-like your blog. Have you read his diary, I like his art but his personality? Well, he's got a big heart-hes just so snooty or comes off that way to a reader of his very posh/glamorous lifestyle of dinner and hanging out with big names. Also very self concious and never gets laid. Youd probably like the journal, lemme know if youve read it. (Its 800 pages-found it best to read 10-30 a day amongst other books;not intense and no climaxing)
I celebrated my birthday yesterday at the New Haven St. Patricks Day Parade! Such a nice day, got lots of tel #s I lost, and reconnected with some important people in my life drugs distanced me from for some time. My brother gave me a gift! He's so proud to have his bro back. He got me a Marmot ski coat, my parents didnt want to split with em-cause they said Im not worth a present like that. The best day in a while.
Met incredible musicians out-Anyone know who "Spring-heeled Jack" are. Met there bass player and guitarist who I think moved on to Reel Big Fish. Really nice people, I really enjoyed yesterday.
Glad to share some good that recovery can offer!

Good luck quitting smoking!! You have inspired me to join you in this difficult time and try to quit too. I haven't smoked nearly as long as you but I have never been able to quit on my own (I think it is the fact I am a drinker and the 2 seem to trigger each other for me). Whats up Dave and all the sexies in 67land~
Haven’t been around for a while since my 17yr old nephew was shot and killed while riding his bike. The vanity just doesn’t seem as significant so I’ve been trying to have a more humble perspective on life. Glad to read all is going well with the production of the ear candy to come. Looking forward to it since music is a therapeutic outlet for me. Audioslave has turned out to be such a killer new band and heard the new release last week and it’s bleep’n awesome…I can see TPC on the same stellar level!!!
Great Job on the cessation of smoking Dave. I have been smoking as long as you have and have been 8 weeks smoke free cold turkey style!!! The transition has been awesome with minimal side effects. I was a devout Marlboro smoker until 6 years ago when I switched to American Spirits. I went from smoking a pack a day to 3-5 cigarettes a day effortlessly. After I made the switch one day I went to my regular store for a pack and they were out, so I succumbed to the old habit and went for the Marlboro as a temp replacement cause I sure didn’t want to get in the car and search for a store that may or may not carry them. After lighting up the red, and enjoying a few pulls…I realized what…3 minutes and I’m ready to light up another one already. My tongue swelled, I got totally light headed with the infamous cigarette buzz and then began to feel nauseous. I literally had to lie down for a while. That was the last time I smoked a Marlboro. After that experience I stuck with the Am Spirits and found that the additive free brand gave me a 20-minute smoke versus the 3 minutes the mainstream brand gave me and I didn’t need to smoke as frequently. This is the first time I’ve been able to quit this long cold turkey, I haven’t been able to stop before. So if the glue on the patch gets annoying…Go for the American Spirits!!!
Thanks for remaining so positive it’s definitely inspiring~
Kisses
Chrissy

Hello everyone -
Just sayin hi. I'm in the process of quittin smoking too Dave. F'kin sucks. I'm nearly 3 months into it and I still jones for one all the time. Been dippin a bit, and I know that's no good to substitute, but it's gettin me by for now. My cut off date for that was today, but we'll try tommorrow instead... :)
Also - Hey Dave, what's the chance of TPC being a late addition to the Coachella lineup? Just seems like you'd be playin it... seems like yer kind of show... c'mon now... you know you want to...
Much peace and love -
Scott

I finally got to see the Venus in Furs video! My computer wouldn't play it for the longest time and well I thought it was awesome. Man was that a trip! I was trying to follow along and decipher what was happening at the same time. I guess it is something that was meant too watch while you are "high" on something. Radical!!

Hey Dave, the smoking thing - great news! Quit before you have to quit (too many smokers stop when they get a spot on the lung, and then it is too late!)
My dad has been smoking since he was 14. He favors cigars. He has tried all kinds of things to quit smoking - the patch, hypnosis, etc . . . - and the only thing that gets him to cut back is - - - switching to cigarettes.
I love my dad dearly and pray that he can beat this. It isn't easy . . .
Prayers for you too Dave!
Always,
me

Dave, thanks so much for allowing members of 6767 to see your showcase tonight, and bring back such wonderful reports. You are as loyal to your family as they obviously are to you.

Wow, everyone's quitting smoking. Am on my 6th week of stopping now, no patches or gum, just cold turkey- figured I was quitting nicotene and it wouldn't be easy any way. Was on 20 a day and have been smoking for 16 years.
Seem to be doing ok, but really miss certain cigs that I would have at certain times every day: the one with a cup of tea at breakfast, the one after a meal, the first one when you sit down in a pub or bar with your first beer, the one when you drop your bag on the floor when you first walk into a hotel room, the one when I get off the motorway when I'm driving to work, the one with my 7.30am tea at work.
Apart from those, I'm doing fine. Have booked a holiday in October and can't imagine sitting in the sun without one though.
The only plus was I was looking at records in a shop, esaping the rain, and a damp bloke who'd obviously just had a cig walked near me and he f**king stank... like sh*t. I just thought to myself, 'Did I used to smell that bad?'.
My mouth does water when I smell them though. I was in a traffic jam and the person 2 cars infront was smoking and I could smell it... lovely!
What is everybody's favourite cig of the day? :)

Dave, I quit smoking a week ago after 22 years... I lasted two days! I just ordered a PRS Dave Navarro - why do you like PRS guitars so much?

Dave!
I'm in a music rut. I'm starving for new material to feed my right brain. I just came off a 2-month Zeppelin binge, peppered with a little Clapton and The Who. Before that, it was late Beatles (Abbey Road, White Album, Let it Be).
Do you have any suggestions? I'm totally open-minded, and not stuck in the 70's! (though, that wouldn't be *such* a bad thing)
Thanks!

Has anyone got a copy of TDDUP they could recopy for me?
Since it won't be getting released...nothing fancy I just want to watch it again...
Unless something's changed, :)
Dave?

Hey, Dave, congratulations on your new smoke-free life. Remember, the physical need for nicotine only lasts for three days, so you're over the worst part!!
Anyway, any chance of TPC coming over to Spain to play? maybe as a support act to someone? Although I'm sure you could fill a venue for 3000 or so people.... Mmm, I know a couple of good ones in Madrid.....

Hey you in the music rut... Go check out UK band 'Muse'! They will blow your mind. Guitarist Mat Bellamy is the next Hendrix (Sorry Dave - but this guy really does breath it out!)

Mmm, new bands to feed your brain? I agree with the Muse suggestion, those people are amazing, especially live!! Try The Mars Volta too, and there's a band from the 70s & 80s called the J. Geils Band that are awesome.
Dave, do you know these people? If so, what do you think of them?

Yo Dave!
Do you use overdrive-pedal or preamp to get gain on that great lead sound of yours ???
Are you fan of The Cult??? Love album fuckin´ rules and the rest is great too.
Are you bored answering this kind of stupid questions because the person who asks shit like this could find the answer in Google in 5 minutes if he really is interested ?
Please Please Us and sign our band´s guestbook at www.bullettrocks.com, because we´re too unknown to be nobodies and we´re attention whores and get excited when people from other side of the planet notice us.

Can't stop listening to Living Colour Live at CBGB'S, also check out VIVID, TIMES UP, STAIN & COLLIDEOSCOPE.
AWESOME!AWESOME!AWESOME!
Dave, do u remember a song that was rejected off of OHM called blender? does it upset you that JAF refuses to play any OHM songs live, and that he does not consider it a true Peppers Album(I personally think that it is THEE SHITE!!! transcending & Shallow are exceptional)

Tonto. When was the live at CBGB's recorded? Never heard it.
Heard any of Vernon Reid's solo stuff- brilliant. Prince Paul produced Mistaken Identity which is really cool, nice mix of styles. His CD with Masque is brilliant too, he covers Sidewinder by Lee Morgan, amazing.
