Monday Morning
A couple of business meetings and rock time today. Not much else to tell. Some new Camp Freddy Radio shows up on the Panic Radio. Next week on CFR we got Steve Isaacs comin' down to do some acoustic numbers in studio, as well as John Claydon from Doheny.
Q: What is it about drink that made you not indulge?
I am allergic to alcohol. When I drink, I break out in handcuffs.

Sunday 10
Well, we had the game. Steve and I had a great time, but we cannot give anything away until the show airs. After, Steve, Riss and I went to see Constantine. The movie was awesome, the effects were amazing. It was, however, like a 2 hour antismoking PSA. An effective one at that.
1. When you wore skirts on stage, what did you wear under the skirt? boxers, briefs, short pants, thong, commando?
Black briefs with fishnets, son. The briefs keep everything together.
2. When you say your sober, is that from drugs or have you abstained from drinking?
I don't do drugs or drink.
3. Are you going to an Oscar watching party? I think I am going to my first tomorrow, not sure of the attire.
I actually have no idea what I am gonna do. The wife is in Australia, so I will probably be missing Elton's thing, it just wouldn't be the same if I went without her.
4. I checked out Steve I's site the other day and he was mentions something about someone with the nickname Gummo and I pretty much figured he was talking about you. Is this a common nickname you are known by or just kind of an inside joke among the band?
Actually, Gummo is our producer, Brian Virtue.
5. Could you guys have used the "Kettle Whistle" versions of "Ocean Size" and "Mountain Song" on the "Nothing's Shocking" album, or could you only use the versions during the NS recording sessions?
I'm sure we could have but they were just demos. Sonically, the recordings had to have a cohesiveness to live with each other on the same album, so we re-did them.
6. Hey Dave! I wonder what you think about these people saying you only care about money and not about music. Is that true?
Yeah, here's a real winner: Leave the big, arena, legacy band everyone knows to start a brand new club band that very few have even heard of. Big dollars in that!
7. Had any dabblings in the freaky world of BDSM?
Oh, for sure. More than just a phase, but in the end, just a phase.
8. With regard to usage, do you ever wonder why some people make it out as intelligent, coherent individuals (such as yourself), while others never come back from the "other side"?
I honestly don't know. It took me quite a while, myself. Sometimes, it just takes what it takes.
9. I totally agree that with tremendous respect for Carmen, a Dave/Angelina photo shoot would just be wickedly beautiful, visual poetry.
Well, I just might have to look into that. How does this sound? "Honey, it's work."
10. What are those noises right at the beginning of the Song "Everything" from your Solo album, "Trust No One"?
A sample of singer Diamanda Galas.

Shannon's Home Game
Tonight is an all new CFR on Indie 103.1FM here in LA. Billy will be having some guests down. He is good like that. I, however, will once again miss tonight's broadcast due to my commitment to play in a poker tournament at Shannon's house with Steve I. The difference between this show and others I have done in the past, is that tonight we are playing with real money for a winner take all grand prize. It's basically a televised home game. I am an OK player, sometimes I do well and sometimes I play like an idiot. Steve, however, is the real player of the band with consistent weekly games and the lot. I am secretly pulling for him to take this thing as he could certainly use the scratch. I'm just goin along for the ride because it'll be fun.
Not much new band news. Still taking a break from recording, but we are continuing to write while on break. We plan to reconvene with our studio schedule on the 7th. Two or three more weeks and that will be that.

Friday
1. Dave, interesting picture, what exactly is it of and did you create it yourself?
That's a double exposure Polaroid. Yes, I just had it on a tripod and set the timer... twice.
2. Dave, was just reading in LA Times that Indie radio is in midst of ownership change. Does that mean that Camp Freddy Radio is going to be Radio Romantica?
Actually, the changes over at Indie, in all seriousness, are not gonna change the programming or shows in any way.
3. Are you ever going to do the show "Til Death Do Us Part" again?
Well, the whole show was just one season about us planning our wedding and getting married, so probably not. The whole story has already been told.
Nothing much new to report. Steve and I are psyched to play in the poker tournament at Shannon's house tomorrow. No Limit Texas Hold Em. The thing will eventually be televised as it is part of a "home game" poker show. I don't know who else is playing, but I do know that Shannon is a rough one at the table. Aggressive, ruthless, hard to read and really pretty (which is really distracting). I have played in her home game before, but I actually walked out of there way up. Of course, THAT wasn't televised!

Just A Day
1. Dave, I know you said at the beginning of the whole Panic Channel thing that you would consider playing some of your TNO solo stuff on the upcoming tour. Do you still feel that way?
This band has really taken on a life of it's own so the idea of doing other songs from TNO is highly unlikely, although we might be able to learn a couple, "just in case".
2. Perhaps Dave drinks the blood of virgins?
Well, they weren't virgins, I can assure you!
3. With Carmen's blessing - Jessica Alba or Halle Berry?
Alba, Alba, Alba...
4. Hey Papi! Was wondering, what's "stuck" in your CD player as of the late?
I'm more of an iTunes "shuffle" kind of guy. Last three songs played were:
Ladies Night - Kool & The Gang
Ghost Town - The Specials
The Seeker - The Who
5. I saw a question were you say that you use 2 delays (long and short) how do you use them?
I don't mean to sound like a smart ass here, but I literally use one for long delay and one for short delay.

Back To Work
A little bit of sunshine today. We go back into the rehearsal room and start writing and jamming new ideas for recording on the 7th. We had a great day off and got some serious rest and relaxation.
1. Hey I was just wondering if you've ever had any "work" done on your face or body or anything or what your take is on plastic surgery, since you are from plastic surgeryville, USA.
No, I have not, however, my take on the matter is this. Life is short, people should just do what makes them happy as long as it doesn't hurt others. If a new nose is gonna help someone feel better about themselves, I'm all for it. Know what I mean? Whatever.
2. And Dave, saw in Star this week that Carmen got it for the best luggage and the best dressed. How do you feel about that?
Um, that the tabloids aren't always wrong!
3. Have you ever played with KORN?
Jane's did a show or two with them and Jonathan has joined Camp Freddy for an amazing version of Paranoid.
4. What was it like touring with a young band like Silverchair in the mid 90s? Did you guys have to watch your behavior around them?
Well, we hired strippers to come out on stage with them for the last show... so, no.
5. Would you say that Eric had a large part on that old Jane's sound?
It was his bass lines, the time, the youth, the combination of the four of us, the chemicals. The 90's.

Another Rainy Day
Yesterday I got a call from a radio station here in LA asking if I was available to fill in for their hosts as they were out celebrating President's Day. It was 3 hours of straight talk radio and I'll tell ya, I had a blast. If I get the clearance, I'll post the show on our online radio. After missing the past two CFR shows, it really made me miss working with my mates over at Indie. Unfortunately, Steve I and I are playing in a poker tournament next Saturday at Shannon Elizabeth's house, so I will miss the CFR then too. No offense to the guys, but Shannon is way more attractive than them. I'll at least phone in with a chip count or something.
1. Dave I was wondering what do you think about all of this rain we are having?
"I love the rain, it washes memories off the sidewalks of life." - Woody Allen
2. Which is your the Cure favorite song and album?
The Kiss off Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. Lots and lots of wah...
3. I want to ask about how you connect your effects (the order) live, especial the digital delay, do you connect it before or after the distortion?
I use mainly amp distortion so I'm guessing it goes before as I do not use the effects loop.
4. Just a quick question about Rexall, does the outro at all remind you of the stuff off of mechanical animals? If so what would you attribute this to?
Yeah, I can hear that. I dunno, I guess it was just the product of Rich Costey and I having too much time on our hands to fuck around in the studio.
5. I'm wondering if he (Dave) can be honest here about stuff like other bands he doesn't dig, or people that are asses.
I suppose, yes, I could be, but the thing is that I am not one for bashing... that much! If I don't dig something, I just don't listen to it, I don't need to rant about why. I also understand the difference between art and entertainment. Some things out there aren't really art, they are just packaged products for entertainment purposes only. Sometimes I want to be moved, sometimes I want to rock and sometimes I just want to be entertained. It's like The Godfather vs. The Terminator. I enjoy both films, but it's usually one or the other for me, depending on what I am in the mood for. I must say, as I have said before, the musical magic for me is when art and entertainment meet. Much like The Godfather, but I'll take a musical Terminator any day as well. (Can you imagine how horrible it would be if they made The Terminator into a musical? Now THAT, I would rant about!)

Monday & The Rain
Well, we wrapped up the two weeks in the studio last night. We are now gonna take a week or so to continue writing and plan on going back in to finish up on the 7th. We finally have rough mixes of what the entire album will sound like and I am extremely proud of it. I think we all are. Of course, if there are some better tracks to be recorded, we will do it on the 7th. Sometimes when you are in the creative flow this deep, ideas and songs just start to evolve out of nowhere. We are looking to have plenty of B-sides and extra material for whatever. Today, however, is all about relaxation and rest as I have an unrelated gig tonight. It is raining here and I love it. Perfect weather for Zeppelin 3 & 4 or any Sabbath album. The soundtrack for the rain. I have missed going in for CFR and plan on returning next week. The shows have been great with Billy and Donovan. It's fun for me to be able to listen to them as a listener, rather than being a participant all the time.

Sunday 10
OK. Here's the deal. When Blink pulled out of the show, we were told that they had broken up. It made sense to us because it was an important show for an important cause. You're right. I shouldn't repeat things that aren't confirmed and I apologize to the band and their fans. Honestly, it was a mistake. I am glad to hear that the news is untrue. Anyway, moving on...
1. When you gave up using substances, how did you hang out with friends that still used?
Well, I wasn't much of a social user, so I really didn't hang out with many people at the time. I was more of a locked up in the house kind of user.
2. Have you thought about funding your new band with your own money instead of having to deal with a record label?
So far, that is what we have done, as there is no "official" deal at the present time.
3. Has anything really embarrassing ever happened to you while you're on stage?
I fell into the audience a couple of times, but that was more fun than embarrassing.
4. Dave, on "Slow Motion Sickness" what did you use for that background distorted pulsing sound?
That is an ARP 2600. It looks like this:
5. Who does most of the lyric writing in the band?
Steve Isaacs does it all.
6. Will the new TPC record feature an appearance by the vibrator?
The vibrator makes a guest appearance on a song called, "Ashes".
7. OK, how about top five places for a 'anything goes' Sunday?
Well, I'm on a delivery kick lately, so my top 5 would be, at least today: 1. Domino's 2. Domino's 3. Domino's 4. Domino's 5. Domino's
8. I know this is a bitch of a question but do you think the Panic Channel's album will be better than Strays?
No man, to me, albums are kind of like children, I love all of them.
9. Another question, what was your personal opinion on Strays?
I had a great time making Strays and I really love the record. I agree with Eric Avery, in that it didn't really sound like the old Jane's, but I think it was the best "New Jane's" work. I guess I can only compare it to the songs, "So What" and "Kettle Whistle" on the Kettle Whistle album. As much as I like those songs, Strays just sounded like a more cohesive band.
10. Robbie Williams doing Camp Freddy? how the fuck did that ever come about?
He and Billy are longtime friends.

Tsunami Benefit Wrap Up
Last night's benefit was just insane. No Doubt were really great of course, as there is nothing that Gwen could do that would suck! She could sing over the sound of nails on a chalkboard and it would be sexy as hell. (No, I'm not saying the band sounds like that, they are all really incredible players.) I caught a few moments of Linkin Park with Jay-Z and I must say it was pretty rockin'. As I mentioned, Ozzy pulled out due to a family situation, but the big shock came when Blink 182 pulled out. Supposedly, they broke up yesterday, at least, that's what we were told. Anyway, best of luck to those guys. So here is the set Camp Freddy did at the Anaheim Pond last night as the show's closer:
(Dave supervises Donovan's make-up)
(Matt Sorum and Chris Chaney were out, so Stephen Perkins (drums) and Chris Wiess (bass) filled in beautifully.)
Rock Superstar - Be Real and Sen Dog of Cypress Hill
Ballroom Blitz - Donovan, John 5
Whole Lotta Love - Richard Patrick of Filter, Billy Duffy and Adrian Young of No Doubt on a second kit!
Should I Stay - Billy Duffy, John 5
Thunder Kiss '65 - Rob Zombie, John 5
Feel Like Makin' Love - Gavin Rossdale, Billy Duffy
I Wanna Be Your Dog - Gavin Rossdale, Billy Duffy, John 5
Poor Davey Havok of AFI got stuck in an airport as his plane was grounded due to bad weather. We had to cut Ziggy Stardust which he has done with us before and kills every time. All in all it was an amazing night for a great cause and the place was just rockin' out hard. When Zombie hit the stage and mass mosh pit broke out. That was a real treat. This band started on a whim at a hotel opening three years ago. It was a pleasure and an honor to be able to play the sold out 12,000 capacity arena with such fine musicians. A very special moment for me was when I noticed about three rows back, fellow 6767er Toby, wearing his Panic Channel T-shirt. Nice one, man! Perk and I were all smiles.

Camp Freddy At Tsunami Benefit Tonight
Tonight is the Tsunami Relief Benefit in Anaheim, CA at the Arrowhead Pond. Bands on the bill:
Blink 182, Linkin Park, Jay-Z, No Doubt, Jurassic 5 and Camp Freddy. Camp Freddy will be joined by Richard Patrick of Filter, Davey Havok of AFI, John 5, Billy Duffy, Be Real & Sen Dog of Cypress Hill and Rob Zombie. Due to unforeseen events that I cannot disclose (only because I don't know what they are), Ozzy will not be joining us this evening. The show, however, will and must go on. It is a great cause and we are humbled and honored to participate in this event. This is the first time that I know of, that such an event has the support of two rival radio stations here in LA... KROQ and Indie 103.1. This show is all about the greater good and thankfully knows no corporate boundaries. So far, this show has raised over 1 million dollars that will be sent to help the recovery of South East Asia.
1. Why is Messy so sexy?
Cause she don't give a fuck!
2. Since you only use your white PRS on tour, do you have several of them for different tunings and what not?
Yes, some have different tunings like a drop D and a couple odd ones I made up. Also, one might have heavier strings depending on the set for the evening.
3. What is your favorite Porno For Pyros song and why?
Cursed Female. It just kind of rules!
4. Messy and Voltaire should be in one of your videos! That would be so hot!
Yeah! No kidding!
5. Dave when you play live do you use any kind of effect that increments your volume on solos? Like a tube screamer or something like that?
No, not really. The band just kind of plays dynamically along with all the changes. Now that we have another guitarist, it might not be such a bad idea, but usually for shows, the front of house sound engineer just cranks solo levels and we leave the stage volume the same.

Semi Day Off/Said You'd Be
Bloody Mary:Flash Version.
Said You'd Be (Live):Flash Version.
Today isn't really a day off, but I get a change of scenery cause I am goin to Camp Freddy rehearsal for a couple of hours today, then back to the studio. Yesterday we finally got that version of Ashes down. Man, that took some work and patience but in the end it is all worth it. Today, Steve is gonna attack the vocals in the studio and Perkins and I are rockin with Ozzy for the Tsunami benefit show in Anaheim tomorrow night. Chaney, is like, in Vail or something on snow skis. As I told you a week or so ago, we did this showcase thing in Hollywood. We video taped the show and Marc Racco did a great job with the direction and editing, but like 4 jack asses, we never addressed the audio issue, so what we got was a relatively OK audio mix that was straight to DAT from the front of house board. It is what it is, but we love it and it's the first time we ever played Said You'd Be in front of anyone. We are proud to share it with you here for the first time.

Day 9
Day 9 here. Yesterday was another killer day of recording and forward motion. Isaacs killed the vocals on Said You'd Be, She Won't Last and Left To Lose. Just nailed the tracks. We had re-tracked a song called Ashes cause we felt the original was too slow. Yesterday I went to do some guitars on the newer version... it was way too fast! So, today it is back to the old drawing board as we re-track Ashes again. What a bitch that one is! We'll get it. Last night Marc Racco stopped by with the final cut of the Said You'd Be live video. That should be up in a day or so. Later, Messy dropped by to hang for a bit. It's nice to have friends and family stop in to visit as our outside lives have ceased to exist over the past couple of weeks.

Day 7/EMI Party
Day 7. "Back to the Carpet." The boys and I went out last night to the EMI post Grammy shin dig. It was awesome to see some old friends and just hang out for the first time as a band. We had a blast. I was the lucky one of the bunch as the party was literally less than a mile away from my house. Everyone met at my place and we rolled out together. Carmen, Steve and Larissa, Chris and Stephen. We ate, laughed and did our best to enjoy our one day off and celebrate Valentine's Day with our ladies. Stephen and Chris's wives opted out due to prior commitments, but it was an early night and I'm sure the boys got home in time for a little love by the fire. (At least, they better have.) Today we go back into the office to finish up the week of recording. I'm psyched to get back to She Won't Last which is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. (The guys will tell you, I always say that about each song we work on, but this time I mean it I swear.) I'm gonna wrap this sucker up in a few hours I just know it. Tomorrow I have to take a few hours off to go and rock with Ozzy at rehearsal for the Tsunami thing Camp Freddy is doing on the 18th in Anaheim. A lot of music these days. I just love it.
1. What is the meaning of life? What is really the point of living, doing silly everyday things that leads to what?
I have no idea. I think for me, just laughter, human connections, sex, music and friends are reason enough.
2. Dave dumped Starlit for Messy!
Oh, that is so untrue! Simara has been workin away on her music and hasn't been able to call into our show. Last week I played their new song Dazies. It is amazing. Shame on you. I would never!
3. I know you can only use one at a time, I meant to say, do you ever make a discovery while laying down tracks and decide to play a different guitar live than PRS?
Not really, no. The thing is that when it comes to over dubs, it is not a good idea to use the same guitar and electronics, amps, as it ends up sounding mushy.

Day Off/Sunday 10... I Mean, 5
Sunday. Time really has been flying by. It's a trippy thing, the studio. When it's hard, it is really hard and frustrating, but when it's fun, it's the most amazing thing that you never want to end. Last night while working on She Won't Last was one of those times where ideas and nuances kept getting thrown around and it was really inspiring. Somehow it always seems that moments like this begin to happen around an hour before the day's time is up. We do a 12 hour day, so around 11:30 in, the magic begins to appear... Kind of like the Murphy's Law of recording, but hey, you gotta be grateful for when it does happen... the magic that is. If it happened all the time, I guess it wouldn't feel so amazing, it would just feel like any other day. Tonight we all go to an EMI party for the Grammy's but we are not going to the actual show. It'll be nice to get out for a change. As I write this I am listening to last night's CFR with Billy doing an amazing job as he flies solo. (Perhaps I should take more days off.) Marc Racco came by the studio tonight and showed us a rough cut of Said You'd Be shot live at the showcase last week. It looks killer and when it's done, we will put it up for you. The audio is a little questionable but the thing is rockin anyway. One would think that we would take care of making sure that the audio gets tracked properly when it comes to a live taping, but of course we didn't even think about it. We re-cut the song and tried to sink it, but it just looked odd, so screw it. It is what it is. In fact, it's the first time we ever played the song in front of anyone so it'll be cool to invite you all in to it's premiere.
Sunday 10:
1. Did you end up modifying or changing the ending of "She Won't Last"? (I really dig the jam at the end that you played at the 2nd (I think) Dragonfly Show.)
We tracked the end jam and it sounds killer, but I am not sure if it will make the final album. It could wind up a B-Side or on an import or just an online thing for all I know. The track is coming out so good it may be anti-climatic to punctuate it with the jam out section.
2. I forgot to ask in the last post, what do you think of Linda Perry as an artist?
I worked with Linda years ago on the Led Zeppelin tribute album on a track called Misty Mountain Hop. Since, we have played together on stage several times and all I can say is that she has one of the strongest and rockinest voices I have ever heard. She is simply amazing.
3. How do you feel about people having pics on their desktops of your wife?
A lot better than if they had pictures of my ex-wife on their desktops.
4. Would you ever like to work with Gwen Stefani?
Maybe a reality show or something like that. It could be called. "Let's See What Happens If Dave & Gwen Are Stranded On An Island".
5. You have been tracking in the studio with a bunch of different guitars, yet, I only see PRS when you play live, ummm, how does that come about? I mean, I understand the analogy of a painter using different color palettes, have you made any new discoveries, I mean, will you be bringing all those guitars with you on tour?
Well, in the studio I can use several guitars on one song, whereas live I can only use one at a time.

Day 6
Day 6. I feel like I am a crazy person. I have no sense of time. I had to take a 2 hour nap yesterday at the studio. These 12 hour days are really starting to melt into one long day. You know when you've played a video game for too long and you finally go outside, you can still see everything digitally? It's kind of like that without the outside part. (One of these days I am going to post without a spell check first. You wouldn't believe just how crazy these things look before I post them.) Perk and Chaney are officially done now and it's all about Steve's vocals and guitar and my guitars. A lot of fun but at times a recipe for loss of perspective and insanity. After eight hours of playing the same song, you can start to see all the micro organisms that live underneath the skin and just how dirty and full of disease every body really is. I know they are trying to get me, but it will never work cause I am on to them. (OK, maybe it's not like that at all, but I figure, point made.) Tomorrow, the band is all gonna go out to a Grammy party with our wives. That should be fun. I hope I can remember how to interact with people. What is it again? You say some shit and then they say some stuff back? How hard can that be? My wife is so cool that she is going to allow me to spend Sunday with her and take her out for our "Valentine's Day" as I will be deep in the studio again on Monday. She doesn't give me grief about stuff like that. It is nice to have that kind of support at home.
1. Wild question here, meteor's gonna strike earth and you have 2 weeks to live. Do you pick up the guitar at all?
Probably not... My first move would be to pick up the phone and call Domino's. "Yeah, I'll take two large, extra cheese... "
2.
De Niro or Pacino? De Niro
Beasties or NWA? Beasties (Because they just have more material.)
Pepsi or Coke? Coke
CD or Vinyl? CD
Mac or PC? Mac
Red or Blue? Red
Road Runner or Coyote? Road Runner
Mustang or Corvette? Mustang (The old ones)
3. Hey Dave - were you ever into weed? I know yer drug-free, but what's your feelings on it.
"I once smoked a joint at a party, I tried to take my pants off over my head." - Woody Allen
4. Also wondered if you were going to answer my question (and someone else's) from a few days ago about your such different tastes in women, i.e.: Carmen and Messy. Thanks!!!
Well, to put matters straight, I love, love, love my wife. I don't, however, have a "type". I just really enjoy the company of strong, individual and unique people. Intelligent, interesting and charismatic. My wife is certainly all of these things. Of course a beautiful woman is a beautiful woman regardless of her vibe, but what I find most attractive is a sense of humor and a fragile heart wrapped in a shell of fierce and shocking beauty. Also, really "done up" women are somewhat self involved, which is always good because it allows you to be able to do your own thing.
5. Work, Coffee and working out. Do you ever sleep? Do you consider yourself a workaholic?
I suppose I do.
Also did that guy that called on CFR ever get his signed picture of your wife.
We sent it out yesterday to Nathan, yes.

Day 5 - B
Please! Come on man, gimme a game, here. There is not even a choice.
2. Judging by the shape your in at 38 you must workout a lot, do you do this for health or is it purely vanity... Christ you are from LA, and did fitness work as a substitute for addiction?
I'd say I am addictive about working out, sure. Vanity? I'd say that being so obsessed with one's own health is in it's own way, quite vain.
3. I read, early this morning, that he (Corey) isn't against Michael and still says he was NOT touched inappropriately and he never witnessed Michael touching anyone inappropriately. He said he did see a book with nude pictures at the house...
I stand corrected. (Still kinda hot though...)
4. Dave. You've met Michael Jackson, is he an interesting guy to talk to or is he shy?
Michael was never anything but kind and gracious to me. Humble beyond words and so damn talented! To watch him work so close to him is kind of mind blowing. He was totally cool to everyone and an ultimate professional. I know it looks bad for him, but I am going to reserve my feelings on the legal matter until the verdict.
5. Dave, have you met Paris Hilton? Could you comment on what she is like, she gets so much spotlight but continues to have this mystique/hidden personality that makes it hard to figure out what she's all about.
I really like Paris. She is always so sweet. People do seem to have it in for her but really, what is she supposed to do? Like she is wealthy beyond comprehension, but at least she is trying to DO something whether it be modeling, acting, singing, TV or whatever. She aint' just sitting around that's for sure. I say it's time we gave her a break. So she has had a few boyfriends and a tape or whatever. I can guarantee I got her beat, but nobody gives me any shit about it... Until she is a bitch to me, I got her back!
6. Are you going to play with Usher at the Grammys?
No, not this time. Believe it or not, I AM co-hosting the pre-show with Lisa Joyner on CBS. Weird. Cool.
7. Cover art! Will you have open submissions? Or is it a corporate hiring thing? I am a graphic designer and have done numerous CD packages for local artist in SF and I would love a shot at it.
Thanx for the offer, but Steve Isaacs has got it locked down!
CFR Update: I may not be attending the broadcast next Saturday as I will be working. If I can slip away for an hour or so, I wil, but I know that Billy M. can hold down the show no problem!

Day 5 - A
(Thank you for sending in the old picture... Memories.)
Here is a little news from deep within the studio trenches. We re-tracked GO On today and I did a bunch of new guitars on it after Chris did his bass track. All I will say is this about that: It is FOR SURE 100 times better than the old one, and not because it's faster... Steve. I know you are not sold, but I would never try to sell you something that you already own. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Own it!
This is very exciting news. I have apparently been christened King of LA bloggers by Tony Pierce. Now, I have never met Tony, nor do I know who he is, but I have a feeling that he is a deep and perceptive guy. The news of this christening ran on Blogging.LA. Tony's original post can be found here. Thank you Tony for the support, now I'm all fucked up trying to be interesting and clever! (That'll be the day...)
Looking forward to 20/20 tonight. Corey Feldman is going to come out against Michael Jackson and tell us all about his trips to Neverland. I would never publicly mention this if he already hadn't, but I met Corey years ago in rehab when he got into all that trouble way back when. I suppose I stayed in trouble a lot longer than him, but now it appears that he, at least, had a reason! I was just a junky. Hey, I'm not saying that the matter should be taken lightly by any means, but if he's gonna go on TV and tell us about it, I'm damn sure gonna check it out! (This Friday, Feb. 11, at 10 p.m. on "20/20")
I'll get to some questions when I wake up...

Day 4
Day 4. Starting to lose track of time. Haven't seen much of the sun lately. Today we finish up basic tracks. It's looking more and more like we are gonna put this thing out in the fall, only because we need to do this the right way and not rush it out for the sake of being out. There are a lot of details other than music that we need to consider. Plans to be made, people to work with, artwork, choices and all. The good news is I saw some of Mark Racco's new video from our showcase last week and it looks like we will have something new up soon. The web cam, aint' lookin' so good but Steve is shooting some video and taking stills in the studio. We are definitely documenting a lot of what's been happening. Today is all about getting a new version of Go On and the acoustic jam, Someone Else. If we accomplish that, which we should, then I will step into overdub world. That is a fun world. Like throwing paint on a canvas, paint by numbers style. You know what the picture is, but creating the color version and watching it become a new image is a really exciting process. I got all my paints down there. A bunch of PRS's, Les Pauls, SGs, Strats, Teles, Yamaha acoustics, Martins, Marshall, Mesa, Bogner, delays, wahs, chorus and a slew of other things I can't even pronounce. A rack of color palette. The studio we are at is very much like the old days where you go in to work and run into other rockers in the hall. Yesterday I ran into Paul Stanley from Kiss and we talked shop. The first show I ever went to was Kiss when I was 11 years old. Trippy to run into him at the office, so to speak.
1. You talk a lot about that Leto character, are you guys buddies or something?
Yeah, we are. Every time I see him I can't believe he is an actual human being.
2. I've always wondered whether your dreads back then were real, extensions, or both.
The dreads were real but the braids were extensions. Anyone have that old shot of the dreaded me with the Nothing's Shocking guitar?
3. Hey Dave do you and Isaacs have a kind of big-brother/little brother relationship? Do you give him tips or ever act like a teacher to him? Or is it a mutual equal type of thing where you learn from each other?
It is definitely a learning from each other thing. That guy is one of the most talented people I have ever met on so many levels. Music, art, life... He is brilliant.
4. I really like that black leather jacket with the stitched around the neck and back that you have.
Thanx, one of a kind. Made for me by my friend, Ana Sui.
5. Dave, will you ever explore your dark side?
Very funny!

Day 3 Studio
So today we cut She Won't Last and re-tracked Ashes. We simply play it better now. The stuff is coming out killer. Tomorrow we re-track Go On for the same reason. We are there, we got the time, mics are set up? Why not? After tomorrow all the basic tracks will be done and it's on to overdubs and vocals. OK, sorry for the short post, all my energy has been zapped.

Day 2/Voltaire Suicide
Day 2 in the studio. Yesterday went great we tracked a new song and set up for another today. Later in the evening Tom Morrello and Nuno Bettencourt stopped by. I tell ya, that Nuno could give Jared Leto a run for his money when it comes to being handsome! God damn, that is one handsome guy! In fact, as you know, they are both amazing guitar players. Anyway, we talked about "Some Kind Of Monster" the Metallica documentary, which by the way, if you haven't seen, is for sure worth checking out. Having all come from bands that have moved on, we could all relate to the issues and themes within the film. It was really an interesting conversation. (I should have rolled DAT on it!) Today I have to go in and finish up a voice over thing for CBS before I go to work, so Steve is going to start the day off with an acoustic jam he wrote. Just acoustic and voice. It's called, "Someone Else" which is not to be confused with my acoustic and voice song, "Somebody Else". HAHAHA. I guess great minds... and all that. By the way, tomorrow, the 9th, happens to be a very special day. Two of my favorite people celebrate birthdays. Billy Morrison and Messy Stench. Happy Birthday you two! I love you both and am so grateful you are in my life.
Not too long ago I shot some pictures of my friend, Suicide Girl Voltaire. The Images are now up at The Suicide Girls. I would describe the shoot as this: Starving while looking in the window of a bakery that is closed! Oh, it was rough! She is so damn cute! Two words gentlemen: "Start Autoplay"
1. Was there an element of inferiority when playing with MJ ?
There was an element of radness!
Also, just got the word. Camp Freddy, Anaheim Pond on Feb. 18th for Tsunami Relief with... Ozzy!!!

Back In The Studio/Hats
So today we go in to finish up recording our record. Quite exciting. "I say, it's quite dope don't you think?" I'm gonna see if I can get us one of them web cam type of things all hooked up. Of course, I'll have to turn it off every once in a while. I usually get naked at some point during the day. I don't even want to get into the shit our producer gets into. All I can say is, it's magical. Tomorrow is all about drum sounds and set up, we will probably get to track at some point in the early evening. I think we are starting with a new one called, "Said You'd Be".
I wasn't going to answer any questions today, but damn if there aren't some good ones!
1. What happened to make you change your outlook on what was cool and what wasn't? I'm not writing this message to slag you off, I'm just interested to hear your side of things. For example, playing with the likes of Usher and Michael Jackson as well as changing your style from bohemain/indie guitar player to leather-clad, hat wearing rock star is quite a change from your early days. What made you change your mind about what type of behavior constitutes "selling out"?
Well, I have answered this many times before and I'll put it as simply as I can. I don't have a "side". I just enjoy music and entertainment. Creating with different artists, from all walks of the spectrum. Usher and Michael are way talented. I appreciate their craft as they do mine. It was simply fun to do. To me, the sellout move would be to not do something I wanted to do because I was afraid of what people might think. Spread the wings baby, you only get one life, at least that I know of for sure. I plan to suck the marrow from this life as long as I can. I suppose if I didn't like those guys and got paid a lot of money I could see your point, but the fact remains that I jammed with them because I was asked and for the experience alone. (You don't get paid for an awards show, BTW.) Hats. Hats are bad now? I've been rockin' hats since the 80's. I can think of several artists that I love and admire, some of whom I have worked with that wear all kinds of hats. Better not mention this to them! Good question dude, I don't feel slagged. I love art, music and entertainment. When all three join up, it is pure magic, but each on it's own is a blast too. I've been so close to the edge that I don't really give a fuck so much if they meet at all times, but I cherish it when they do. The list of artists and musicians that God has graced me with the opportunity to play with is unreal. I am eternally grateful. How many guys have rocked with Michael Jackson and Lou Reed? Not many I am sure. It has been an honor to be of service to these musicians and many more. I love life and playing. I don't cast judgment on anyone. It makes me feel ill. I used to live that way and I only knew fear and suffocation. Today, I am a free bird, doing what I was meant to. Enjoying my life to the fullest.
P.S. The leather was just a ploy to get me on MTV. HAHAHAHAHA...

Sunday 10
(Messy, Dave & artist, Yvette Marie at a gallery show in LA.)
1. How do you feel knowing that John doesn't like to play One Hot Minute's songs? I mean ... for what I've read in interviews and such, he totally hates the album you recorded with the Peppers. What's your reaction to that?
Well, I really love that record, but you know, whatever, John certainly is entitled to his opinions and feelings. I totally respect that. It doesn't effect how I feel about his work and his art. I would imagine if a girlfriend cheated on me with some guy and they got a puppy together, if she ever took me back, I would have a hard time walking the dog it turned into. HAHAHAHA!
2. Dave, have you ever had your Marshall's moded, and if so what?
Nope. 100% stock, straight out the nutsack!
3. Is the Panic Radio going to be a permanent thing you guys will keep adding to?
I hope so. As long as Chase and Robert keep doin' their thing, I'll keep doin' mine. I couldn't do it without their help and support. Cheers guys!
4. I am so upset to hear that TDDUP will not be on DVD. How do you plan to "pirate" it? Or was that a joke?
Well... I COULD rip copies of the one I have, and then make it available online for order. It could get tricky... I'd have to clear it with MTV and probably do a limited release of 50 or so for nonprofit. The good news is I wouldn't be breaking any laws, but once it is out there, I can't control what happens! (If you know what I mean.) Looking into it this week.
5. On a totally different note, what do you think of the Butthole Surfers?
Let's see. "Love them", comes to mind.
6. Hey dave....in rexall u say how u never want another wife......was that true ? cos obviously it isnt hence Carmen...does this mean the rest of trust no one was full of untrue lyrics that you dont really mean ?
Quite simply, it means I changed my mind. Ha Ha. Look, it's an honest account of where I was at the time I wrote it. Wouldn't it suck if we weren't able to grow and evolve and learn to see things in a new light? One of the reasons I love art so much is that it is a somewhat historical account of the artist. Where they were, who they were. Put it this way, if John stayed a junky, we would miss out on all the cool new RHCP records. Thank God HE has evolved!
7. At what point did you start talking like a black guy?
Ha ha ha! I am surprised this hasn't come up sooner. I don't know really. Perhaps it's part of the "evolution"! Haha. Who knows why I do so many things? I've gotten looser and way more insane over the past few years, but in a good way. I think it's just fuckin' funny! Plus, my wife is a serious all Hip Hop type. Yo, dat shit always be bumpin up in here! Ya heard?
8. When you drink coffee (or when you used to drink), does caffeine gives you an stone-hard erection that you can't make go down?
No. I must be drinking the wrong kind!
9. Wow you and Carmen are so busy how do you keep it together...do u have special days during the week for just the two of u?
It is hard sometimes. We go on a lot of trust and faith. The distance does keep things very fresh all of the time. We each go out and bring new experiences back into our relationship. Like every six months or so we find ourselves with new personality traits. It's kind of rockin'.
10. You don't believe in those little tiny things that keep clothes done up, do ya?
Well, I believe they exist. I have heard about them. Kind of like UFOs or the Loch Ness Monster or Big Foot.

Avery in the CFR Studio
I just got in a little while ago from an art show in Hollywood with Messy and her boyfriend Nico. What a spectacular couple! Earlier in the evening, CFR had Eric Avery in the studio and thanks to Chase from Not For Nothing and Robert, you can listen to the entire broadcast on the Panic Channel Radio. I'll be back tomorrow with the Sunday 10...

Up In Here, Up In Here
I guess I should have worded things differently yesterday. It's not like I have some "big surprise" or anything, I just didn't really believe I was actually doing what I was told I was doing. Well, I should have believed it. I co-hosted a Pre-Grammy show for CBS, not that big a deal. Here is the really weird part. They have all this b-roll stuff from people on the street on a monitor and who do I see? Jezebel! It was pretty trippy to say the least! Even when I'm off doing some unrelated thing, you guys are there. I thought it was way cool. You looked great Jez! Anyway, the MTV thing is just a pilot for a series they are trying to do. I'm only in the first one, but it was kind of funny. It's about me baby-sitting my 5 and 10 year old brothers. I have no idea when and if it is going to air, but it is such a "fish out of water" type of thing, that it kind of works. Basically it's about me lookin' like a jackass cause I have no idea what to do with kids. Carmen does make an appearance, but of course, she comes across great! (!@#$) All in all it was a long day, but a fun day as well.
1. Does Marc Racco have a website or did he just do that on the side?
I don't think he has a site, but he is the director who brought us such videos as Jane's Addiction's Stop and Nirvana's In Bloom. It for sure isn't a "side" gig for him. He is kind of "The Man".
2. Any word on when TDDUP will be finally released?
Sadly, it isn't going to be released. Something about licensing and all that. I don't really get it. I might just have to "pirate" the show when we get our online store set up. At least Carmen and I have a killer wedding home movie to show our kids one day.
3. Hey Dave, what do you have to say about John Frusciante? Have you heard any of his solo albums? Have you ever met him?
Johnny is the SHIT! I love his style and playing. I consider him a friend although we never "hang", it's more like a "brotherhood" thing. His solo records are great but I prefer him in RHCP. (In the same way I prefer my own playing in a collective band.) I do like his records a lot though, and I also plan to make more solo stuff in the future. But when it comes right down to guitar playing, I love how he works off the other guys.
4. Cool to hear Tom Morello was there too. Has he heard you guys before and what did he think of it?
Oh, he had the time of his life! Ha ha.
5. Please tell me that you are going to post tonight's "CFR ~Eric Avery episode"... sometime soon on yer 'panic channel radio'.......for all of us who are goin to miss this wonderous event?
Know this!

Oh, Just... Stufff
Last night we did what is called a showcase. Basically, it's a glorified rehearsal with lots of potential business and industry associates in attendance. Pretty uncomfortable if you ask me, but necessary. In order to make it less uncomfortable, we invited a few friends and family, our friend Tom Morello, and a couple of people to film... Marc Racco and his crew. (The guy who made the Bloody Mary video.) I gotta say, we had a really great time. We unleashed two new songs, "Said You'd Be" and "Left To Lose"... my two favorites. We also played six others, Loophole, Go On, Outsider, Ashes, Half Hearted and Bloody Mary. Hopefully we will have some video in a week or so on the TPC site. In all my years, I have never done a "showcase". I chose to replace those feelings of discomfort (I mean, it's a room with like 20 industry types, it's not like a show.) with excitement over the fact that we are brand new, like a baby band. It was kind of rad. Monday we go in to the studio to finish the recordings for the new album. We have done 7 songs and plan to do 4 or 5 more. We are currently trying to be out by June, but my experience in this business tells me to prepare for the fall. Either way it'll be fine. We will still hit the country this summer on a number of shows if we have to wait. After the show we did the band dinner thing with Riss, Brian Virtue, our producer, and our friend Steve Perry. (Yes, I did hit him up for a Camp Freddy gig and he is way into it.) Today is a long one. I have to go do a voice-over thing for an MTV pilot I shot with my family and then tape another thing which I still can't believe is real so I will hold off on what it is. If it IS a reality, I will check in tonight with that update. Avery on CFR tomorrow!
See Ya,
DN
(P.S. Trying to get a web cam in the studio next week. We'll see...)
1. Dave can you tell us what's on your pedal board besides your crybaby?
Hendrix Cry Baby, Boss Digital Delay - Long Delay, Boss Digital Delay - Short Delay, Boss Chorus, Boss Octaver, Tuner. That's it!
2. I am a long time Jane's and Howard Stern fan. Is it true that Howard Stern is responsible for getting Jane's back together?
In a way, we initially reunited for the Stern Soundtrack as Porno doing Hard Charger.
3. Dave, in all honesty, if all the fame and adulation left you, yet you were still making a living and able to play locally, how would you feel?
Less famous! Ha ha ha...
4. DAVE!!!! What was it like working with Ian Astbury? Ummmm, did you see E.R. tonight? Was that Madchen Amick...
Well, I have only played with him once back in the late 80's. We did Zepp's Rock'n'Roll. I think it was killer! I was a drunk kid back then. As for E.R. with Madchen all I can say is... "Damn! I missed that shit?"
5. What kind of cigarettes do you (prefer to) smoke?
"Still Life with Woodpecker", baby!

Aint Nothin' Goin' On But The Rent!
This morning I met with Billy and Mike Clink regarding the completion of the Camp Freddy album. No date yet, as we still have a lot of scheduling to do with all of our guests. Gonna be rockin' though. We should have some tracks to jam on air soon. What else? Gym. Some TV stuff with Billy, a kind of "making of" thing. Right now I am gonna take one of my highly anticipated and long overdue naps. Rock rehearsal in the evening. All good. Tomorrow is lookin' like it'll be a long one. Better rest up. Nap time...

1. Do you believe in shrinks, or should we develop the discipline to work out our own problems?
I do. As with anything, some are great and some are not so great, but for the most part, even taking the action of doing something that could be helpful is in itself a positive thing. Life is short and precious. Why not try everything possible to make yourself comfortable and happy while you are here? Who is to say that the action of going to take care of yourself regularly isn't it's own form of discipline?
Reminder: Eric Avery in studio Saturday night on CFR
Today: morning post, gym, rehearsal - Groundhog Day for sure!

Being In Camp Freddy Doesn't Suck
1. Dave, I know you're not much into sports and all, but are you and Carmen doing anything for Superbowl?
Well, I doubt it.
2. Do you ever see or hang out with Anthony, Flea or Chad anymore?
A month rarely goes by that I don't hang, speak to or see at least one of them. They are 3 of my favorite people of all time.
3. Hey Dave. I can't think of a way to word this without sounding like I'm being mean about it, but I was wondering what Carmen thinks/say's about you making out with other girls?
Well, a kiss of mutual admiration onstage isn't really "making out". It would be a whole different story if it were to take place in seclusion. She was not 10 feet away from me during the Camp Freddy show, tucked away in the wings. She is secure and she rules! She adores Terri and Courtney and we are all friends.
4. Dave, is there anyway you can post that article from Spin "The Dance of Decadance: The Uncensored History of Jane's Addiction....
Don't have it son.
Here is a little update about the CFR show last Saturday. Billy and I get a little "wired" on coffee and kind of go a little nuts. We like to give our program director a lot of shit on the air but the truth is that he is a really cool guy. This is my public retraction about the corporate structure. The truth is that they let us get away with murder. Indie is the most non-corporate station in the world and we love it there.
