Day 7/EMI Party

R1671182966_1Happy 9th Birthday Andre!!!

Day 7. "Back to the Carpet." The boys and I went out last night to the EMI post Grammy shin dig. It was awesome to see some old friends and just hang out for the first time as a band. We had a blast. I was the lucky one of the bunch as the party was literally less than a mile away from my house. Everyone met at my place and we rolled out together. Carmen, Steve and Larissa, Chris and Stephen. We ate, laughed and did our best to enjoy our one day off and celebrate Valentine's Day with our ladies. Stephen and Chris's wives opted out due to prior commitments, but it was an early night and I'm sure the boys got home in time for a little love by the fire. (At least, they better have.) Today we go back into the office to finish up the week of recording. I'm psyched to get back to She Won't Last which is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. (The guys will tell you, I always say that about each song we work on, but this time I mean it I swear.) I'm gonna wrap this sucker up in a few hours I just know it. Tomorrow I have to take a few hours off to go and rock with Ozzy at rehearsal for the Tsunami thing Camp Freddy is doing on the 18th in Anaheim. A lot of music these days. I just love it.

1. What is the meaning of life? What is really the point of living, doing silly everyday things that leads to what?

I have no idea. I think for me, just laughter, human connections, sex, music and friends are reason enough.

2. Dave dumped Starlit for Messy!

Oh, that is so untrue! Simara has been workin away on her music and hasn't been able to call into our show. Last week I played their new song Dazies. It is amazing. Shame on you. I would never!

3. I know you can only use one at a time, I meant to say, do you ever make a discovery while laying down tracks and decide to play a different guitar live than PRS?

Not really, no. The thing is that when it comes to over dubs, it is not a good idea to use the same guitar and electronics, amps, as it ends up sounding mushy.

Dave - I'm surprised that you didn't mention music.

Hi Dave & friends,

I'm glad you guys had a nice time last night. It's certainly well-deserved. Best of luck with the music and all that good stuff.

I love your philosophy on life. I couldn't agree more.

And Happy Valentine's Day, everyone. Whether you have a Valentine or not, treat yourself in some way, and have a lovely afternoon & evening!

Hello everyone,

I am a long-time lurker of this site and I thought I'd make myself known today and wish everyone a Happy Valentine's Day! If you don't support this holiday, then I wish you a great day anyway.

I know it'll get answered one day... :)

Dave, when my Navarro PRS arrives (on order), is there any way I can send the backplate out to your publicist or whoever I can go through to get you to sign it? They say it'll be 5 months in the making...

Thanks!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY Dave and Carmen! I hope you have a special day! Hubby and I are staying in and cooking T-bones! We'll go out when it's less hectic out there! A good reason to stay in by the fireplace on a cold rainy night! :-)

Last night I read half of your book. I must say it's so interesting and so hard to put down! After reading all about your addiction battles, I have to say that I admire you all the more since you beat that battle! I don't know how you did it, but so glad you did! You are so awesome! I hope that others who are battling addictions can learn from you and know that they can beat it! Thanks for letting us in your private little world! We love you!!!! (But, I'll never look at a toaster the same way again.)

i was just wondering how much influence and input do you have on your guitar sounds in the studio? (especially One hot minute and strays) Do you actually tweek yourself or do you let the engineers do it for you? im wondering how much ezrin had to do with your guitar sounds on strays?

Hey, Dave,

I have to tell you, Andre saw the Happy Birthday and screamed - he was so excited - he even danced a little. He knows who you are and he was just ecstatic!!!

Thanks for giving my little guy a much needed suprise!

Hey Dave! Three Days has to be my favorite Jane's song. How did you come up with such an incredible jam? Also I just got a PRS Artist 3 and I was wondering if it would be worth it to change the rotary selector out for the 3 way+ push-pull?

Posted by: Evan at February 14, 2005 08:36 PM

It's simple. If you like the Rotary, keep it. If you like the toggle better, change it.

It's just that simple.

Dave can't make up your mind for you.

Posted by: Zimphire at February 14, 2005 08:48 PM

Oh, and happy Vagina Day Dave.

Posted by: Zimphire at February 14, 2005 08:49 PM

"happy valentine's everybody, Dave have you ever heard of Mogwai or Sigur Rós, if so, any comments?" - Wil from above.

All i gotta say is that anybody with any sense or follows any type of music would know those two bands despite their lack of mainstream success to date.

Posted by: jeff at February 15, 2005 06:14 AM

Q DAVE

"I have no idea. I think for me, just laughter, human connections, sex, music and friends are reason enough."

Do you think financial security helps?

Posted by: Nik at February 15, 2005 06:48 AM

Dave, I'm thinking you probably knew a bunch of people at the EMI party so I will ask you this.

How do you think most of those people ended up there? There tends to be this stereotype of hollywood that you have to sleep with someone or do something outrageous to be a part of it. I can understand it being about connections and who you know, but it's hard for me to believe that a majority are going to use and kiss ass get there. I'm betting a majority of the people at the party have legitimate stories.

Posted by: mortisha8 at February 15, 2005 06:59 AM

Good morning everybody.

Dave-please take time for Serges question, is was a good one, that im sure other people who've recorded are curious about. I recorded with an engineer with a huge hip hop background. For some reason he liked what I did? We would get sounds from a DR-16 if Im correct, but thats an old piece. Also as far as atmospherics, he would tweek everything....no input from me(just what ever the PCP was making him feel!). I know the equipment I had access to was better than most pro-studios in New Haven but there are so many components I had to sit back n trust. So, to add to Serges question....ever get intimidated by studio equipment?

Sorry Serge for expanding, but dude that was a great question! Thanks man.

I read in Men's Journal about your workout. Do you do a whole body workout or focus on muscle groups per session? I enjoy running too and I'm keen not to put on weight or do anything too heavy to damage the joints. But I would like to get ripped. Seeing as you have an idea physique I would appreciate any comments.

Thanks
