Back In The Studio/Hats

DaveinsaneSo today we go in to finish up recording our record. Quite exciting. "I say, it's quite dope don't you think?" I'm gonna see if I can get us one of them web cam type of things all hooked up. Of course, I'll have to turn it off every once in a while. I usually get naked at some point during the day. I don't even want to get into the shit our producer gets into. All I can say is, it's magical. Tomorrow is all about drum sounds and set up, we will probably get to track at some point in the early evening. I think we are starting with a new one called, "Said You'd Be".

I wasn't going to answer any questions today, but damn if there aren't some good ones!

1. What happened to make you change your outlook on what was cool and what wasn't? I'm not writing this message to slag you off, I'm just interested to hear your side of things. For example, playing with the likes of Usher and Michael Jackson as well as changing your style from bohemain/indie guitar player to leather-clad, hat wearing rock star is quite a change from your early days. What made you change your mind about what type of behavior constitutes "selling out"?

Well, I have answered this many times before and I'll put it as simply as I can. I don't have a "side". I just enjoy music and entertainment. Creating with different artists, from all walks of the spectrum. Usher and Michael are way talented. I appreciate their craft as they do mine. It was simply fun to do. To me, the sellout move would be to not do something I wanted to do because I was afraid of what people might think. Spread the wings baby, you only get one life, at least that I know of for sure. I plan to suck the marrow from this life as long as I can. I suppose if I didn't like those guys and got paid a lot of money I could see your point, but the fact remains that I jammed with them because I was asked and for the experience alone. (You don't get paid for an awards show, BTW.) Hats. Hats are bad now? I've been rockin' hats since the 80's. I can think of several artists that I love and admire, some of whom I have worked with that wear all kinds of hats. Better not mention this to them! Good question dude, I don't feel slagged. I love art, music and entertainment. When all three join up, it is pure magic, but each on it's own is a blast too. I've been so close to the edge that I don't really give a fuck so much if they meet at all times, but I cherish it when they do. The list of artists and musicians that God has graced me with the opportunity to play with is unreal. I am eternally grateful. How many guys have rocked with Michael Jackson and Lou Reed? Not many I am sure. It has been an honor to be of service to these musicians and many more. I love life and playing. I don't cast judgment on anyone. It makes me feel ill. I used to live that way and I only knew fear and suffocation. Today, I am a free bird, doing what I was meant to. Enjoying my life to the fullest.

P.S. The leather was just a ploy to get me on MTV. HAHAHAHAHA...

I can't believe I'm first. I'm never first!

(I'm also at work)

Why not keep the cam on while you're naked? What happened to throwing down, Dave? ;)

Nice question, and a great answer, Dave. Dave, you've mentioned that you incorporate Yoga into your fitness routine. How long have you been practicing Yoga, and how has it had an impact on your life? Enjoy the jam, bro, and everyone have a great week! Peace.

P.S. - 1st post!! Dig it!

"I love life and playing. I don't cast judgment on anyone. It makes me feel ill. I used to live that way and I only knew fear and suffocation.".....these words are so true and I relate to every single one of them.

Dave, I have a question for you: What do you use in your hair? It's really cool how it always looks wet, but still moves around.

On a totally different topic: I just watched the "Been Caught Stealing" video for the first time in years (on VH-1!!!) - hard to believe you are the same dude. You weren't abducted by aliens at some point, were you?

for me i can never get over this "sellout" thing that dave seems to get hit with all the time.

what defines a sellout? and why is it, that like Jane's members seem to be held to this...

Dave,

Love the Pic! I was under the impression that in those days, you played with an Ibanez, but the pic shows you with a Les Paul (a beautiful creature indeed). Did you do any recording with a Les?

Posted by: chiliconcarnival at February 7, 2005 02:07 PM

Dave,

We all know you love the LV stuff. Ever thought of decking the grand national out in some LV seats or a LV top?

I am remebering Ludacris had that done in 2 Fast 2 Furious, and Nelly had it done to one of his cars. You don't need to be rolling 24's but some LV seats would be PHAT!

Food for thought (low in carbs to),

You know what? I miss those long hair on Dave days. You looked SO pretty, I know you are all grown up and a man now and all that but... It's kind of like when my youngest son was born and he was so beautiful that people thought he was a girl now matter how much blue and boy stuff I dressed him in. So I am happy to see that you are growing your hair longer lately. I hope people are bringing back the 70's hair. I had cousins who wore their hair down to their waist and only half of those were girls! What do you think Dave? Bring back the long hair?

Thanks for your reply Dave. I enjoyed your answer and totally understand your point about Michael Jackson and Usher being very talented guys. I guess we jane's fans just find it hard to understand how you can go from playing your heart out on incredibly emotional and true songs like Aint No Right, Whores, No One's Leaving etc to something so seemingly banal as Billie Jean or even Bloody Mary for that matter. I hope the situation between yourself, perkins and perry isn't as bad as it seems from the outside coz for a group of guys to have been through so much together and not be friends after so many years would just be sad. Call the motherfucker. Also, no offence to the guy, but Chris Isaacs' voice is just american alt-rock by numbers, something the drummer and guitar player from the mighty Jane's Addiction just shouldn't be allowing themselves to get involved with. You know it.

Posted by: elbuitre at February 7, 2005 04:02 PM

great answer dave...i truly believe what you say about selling out...it's only doing something you DON'T want to do...or not doing something you want to do...i've loved EVERYTHING you've done...it's all great stuff and it shows you've put your love and dedication in it...and that's what i love about it.

although your look HAS metamorphisized a lot...for the better btw lol...but it is strange how in jane's early days you had a very...odd..look with dreads and striped socks and always sunglasses...but i like the look you've evolved too...keep the leather...ALWAYS a plus...we all change our looks over the years...honestly...do we dress the same way now as we dressed in the late 80's/early 90's...so...dave shouldn't either lol...but it is a cool and complete change :-)

i'm overly chatty today lol...i just realized this...oh well...i'm sending my love to everyone! much love!

Forgive me 'cos I'm late, but I read in one of your earlier posts that TDDUP won't be released.

Dave man, I feel bad when people call in and just say bad words.. do you guys get in trouble for that? Eh, good shows though lately, really liked 2/5.

Posted by: Andy at February 7, 2005 04:13 PM

Dave, thank you so much for the CFR show with Eric. It truly felt as if we were sharing a special moment with the two of you. I hope that you guys don't go so many years between visits again, and that we get to hear the two of you on the air again.

One of my all-time favorite Hollywood moments was seeing both Eric Avery and Flea playing bass at the same time during a John Frusciante performance show at the Knitting Factory last year.

Much love~

Dave!
How often do you listen to old jane's material? What about bootlegs of old shows? I ask coz I notice the picture of you at the top of this page comes from the "Live and Insane" boot from the 12/19/90 Hollywood Paladium show. A great gig. All four of you were ON FIRE that night, especially on One Percent and No One's Leaving. Mind-blowing stuff.
Hope you can respond to this one, I've always been curious...

I wondered about something to do with the pilot you are doing. When you are around your little brothers, do you swear? I have a sister 28 years younger than myself and find it hard to hold my tongue - and I never swore until I went to college (except for an occasional slip)

Hey now, just posting my usually daily check in. More cds to be mailed tomorrow, I covered everyone who sent me an address(even those in England and Australia!). I hate the demo now, so I added a random cd to each package. Mostly old school hip hop like De la sol. Good stuff mostly, stuff I had doubles of. I love collecting, If anyone wants to return the favors after receiving the cds, Id love to preview your favorite disks!

Does anyone know what happened to the band Rehab outta Atlanta. The Atlanta scene blew up around Outkast, these guys album was sick. Everyone probably heard "It Don't Matter" but that entire cd rocked and had a crazy media video extra included. Dave you into "Outkast"-Ive heard your all hippedy hoppedy. AQUENIUM is the craziest album Ive heard in a long time.

Happy birthday ImDead-didnt know you had a birthday while wailing in the afterlife.

Dave,
Your response today was so inspiring! It's funny how we all go through change and experiment. As youngsters, we typically spend so much of our time living in fear, worried about the next guy, trying to make our mark in the world and discover who we are as an individual and then one day we sorta just 'get it'. We are happy with who we are, we understand more of what makes us unique and then we begin to really enjoy life. What is important is that we never stop discovering, we just know where to look now!
I work with teens monday thru friday and see this in them so much. It is hard to explain this to them as it is a journey they must embark on. You just try your best to guide them and help them learn from their mistakes and successes. Listen to me be Ms. Preachy-sorry I don't mean to be, but your words today were moving.
You might do work with another artist, one of their songs, but you bring into it your own personal style and edge that no other guest musician can... even if it is Billy Jean -haha
Peace and Love to all

elbuitre, before you go and give an opinion about someone, at least learn their name first, would ya?

Posted by: mortisha8 at February 7, 2005 08:12 PM

Look what happened when the Beatles broke up. People were saying the samething that elbuitre is saying. But look what happened George came out with an amazing album. Wings were formed. Lennon came out with great songs. And none of that would or problem could have happened if the Beatles would of stayed together.

If you truely believe that Dave is a true artist and a awesome guitarist. Then you will believe that the new music he creates will be wonderful.

And having Dave play with all these other musicians is way cool. I have friends that hated Jane's. But now that they see Dave playing with these other people and seeing him play poker and hear him on the radio they are becoming fans.

You go Dave,

Matt

dave and family, i missed you all!

i went on a nice romantic vacation with my girlfriend. we went to Knysna, a small town with lush mountain forests and a huge lagoon and the gorgeous sea!

An interesting fact is that J.R.R. Tolkien was born a South African and lived in Knysna. if you read The Lord Of The Rings, some of the forested mountains he described in the book he based directly on forested mountains in Knysna. i could actualy read the book and see exactly what he was describing! now, Peter Jackson did a great job, but just imagine looking and seeing exactly what he was talking about to the finest detail. AMAZING!

well, im back, and i missed you all.

Wow Dave...Lou Reed! George Clinton once passed me a mic once in college during "We got the funk" and I once gave Dinko D from Leaders of The New School some tips on rap style cause I was so high and he asked? Even for a person as accredited as yourself, that musta been a trip. What did you guys do together? Songs?

Elbuitre-I have my questions about whether or not Daves new band is gonna be a "success". But what is success? Money? Lots of songs on the radio? Lots of songs on the radio that are not that good? Lots of songs not on the radio that rock? I cant speak for the man, but he seems happy. Happiness and friendship is a big part of success for me. Im not gonna knock ya for your comments, Im a very dismal and negative person. "The cups half empty?, Well I think you suck you dumb f*ck holdin your cup!" That kinda vibe. Its not good, and something I work on. Until that albums mastered and heard we can only wish the best to everyone. May it rock! As far as I know the albums finished recording yesterday, not even mastered.

Lou Reed...man I hope you got a journal Dave! (?)
