Another Rainy Day
Yesterday I got a call from a radio station here in LA asking if I was available to fill in for their hosts as they were out celebrating President's Day. It was 3 hours of straight talk radio and I'll tell ya, I had a blast. If I get the clearance, I'll post the show on our online radio. After missing the past two CFR shows, it really made me miss working with my mates over at Indie. Unfortunately, Steve I and I are playing in a poker tournament next Saturday at Shannon Elizabeth's house, so I will miss the CFR then too. No offense to the guys, but Shannon is way more attractive than them. I'll at least phone in with a chip count or something.
1. Dave I was wondering what do you think about all of this rain we are having?
"I love the rain, it washes memories off the sidewalks of life." - Woody Allen
2. Which is your the Cure favorite song and album?
The Kiss off Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. Lots and lots of wah...
3. I want to ask about how you connect your effects (the order) live, especial the digital delay, do you connect it before or after the distortion?
I use mainly amp distortion so I'm guessing it goes before as I do not use the effects loop.
4. Just a quick question about Rexall, does the outro at all remind you of the stuff off of mechanical animals? If so what would you attribute this to?
Yeah, I can hear that. I dunno, I guess it was just the product of Rich Costey and I having too much time on our hands to fuck around in the studio.
5. I'm wondering if he (Dave) can be honest here about stuff like other bands he doesn't dig, or people that are asses.
I suppose, yes, I could be, but the thing is that I am not one for bashing... that much! If I don't dig something, I just don't listen to it, I don't need to rant about why. I also understand the difference between art and entertainment. Some things out there aren't really art, they are just packaged products for entertainment purposes only. Sometimes I want to be moved, sometimes I want to rock and sometimes I just want to be entertained. It's like The Godfather vs. The Terminator. I enjoy both films, but it's usually one or the other for me, depending on what I am in the mood for. I must say, as I have said before, the musical magic for me is when art and entertainment meet. Much like The Godfather, but I'll take a musical Terminator any day as well. (Can you imagine how horrible it would be if they made The Terminator into a musical? Now THAT, I would rant about!)

Sigh
I hope everyone else is having a great day. THe noise from my basement is terrible!! I guess heat in the north is a good thing and a little noise is worth being toasty warm.
Have a great day y'all!

LMAO
I didn't read your last sentence Dave. Terminator the musical! Now that is Hollywood! I'm sure the furnace repair man is wondering why I am laughing by myself upstairs. Thanks for the chuckle!

nice words about art vs entertainment, i agree completely.

I wonder...
If Dave would be interested in doing a kind of collision course type thing with some rap/hip-hop star, and if so anyone particular...

Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me is amazing. One can only dream of getting the chance to play with Robert Smith. Did anyone catch the Cure icon show? No MTV2 for me :(

I think Terminator the musical would be FANTATSTHIC! "I'll be back, I'll be back, I'll be back-as Governor!" *chorus guys dancing*

by far THE BEST Cure song! Glad to agree with you!

dave - i think you should say whatever you want to say about anything at anytime. blink 182 breaking up or going on hiatus is not earth shattering news at all.

Hey everybody!
The Cure is so cool.I got to see some of the Icon show. It was good. It was cool that Marilyn Manson was hosting it. Hope everyone has a great day.

I love that "True Nature" song. One of my favorites!

Blink 182 fans need to chill out,its pretty hypocritical to rag on someone who made an honest mistake, who hasn't made one of those in they're lifetime, everyone has.
It's funny how these people come out the woodwork only to be rude and then dissapear again.lol

So you thought Blink broke up outright only to find they are on "indefinite hiatus." Don't sweat it, Dave. Everyone makes mistakes.

I was watching this movie called "The 60's" the other day and Donovan was in it. It was so funny to see him all decked out looking and talking like a tree hugger....you ever see this Dave?

Dave,
I just came across this blog through a roundabout way. I really just wanted to say that I have been a huge fan of Janes since about 1990. If I may I would just like to post two fond memories:
1) Seeing the first Lollapalooza somewhere in a field in New Jersey. Rain started to pour right before you guys came on. I was exhausted, down to a pair of boots and ripped army shorts and I was sitting in a puddle of mud. Three Days started and I looked to my left and saw a young mother breast-feeding her baby in the rain. It was quite a surreal moment.
2) I was in Prague one week and was able to score some Chili Peppers tickets when you were with them. I saw you guys at some gymnasium and after the show I basically wandered backstage. I came up to you and you said hello as if you knew me and that you were expecting to meet a cousin of yours or something like that. I was very confused, but basically said I just wanted to say hello and shake your hand (which you did.) I have to say - that was very cool.
Thanks for some great memories, and best of luck with all your endevours,
David Y

Hi Dave. I've been reading this for a while (and lovin' every minute). I have a question for you: For weeks I have been reading on several music related message boards that *IF* Mick Mars is physically unable to tour (due to his degenerative bone disease) that you will be filling in on the Motley crue tour. Is there any truth to this rumor?
Posted by: Peached at February 22, 2005 03:27 PM
The only thing I think Dave and Steve have to worry about when playing Shannon is when she gets the sage to burning!!!
Hey, Dave, so, Rush Limbaugh, or Larry Elder, were you maybe filling in for Tom Leykis? MORE INFO!!!!!

Dude,
I have been playing lots of records to cope with the rain. Great way to spend a day... Here's some of the playlist.
The Special's first album is unreal. As fun and as dark as anything going.
Jane's Addiction Live and Profane. This is the early live stuff from a Valentine's Day Show. (Correct me if I'm wrong, Dave.) Seriously, the way JA is meant to be heard. 1% and Whores are amazing. Dave, still my two favorite solos!
Rage Against the Machine's first album. Yep, I bought in on vinyl. (Later on CD) This is the Shizzle! I wish Freedom was played on the radio these days. After all, it was released when Bush Sr. was in office and now should be played at full volume as an anthem for the movement today. Spread the word.
Tom Waits, The Heart of Saturday Night. What can I say? Just amazing heartfelt songs from a musical genius before he lost his voice. Every song tells a great sad story and really just gives you a reason to be glad to be alive.
X Under the Big Black Sun. I have owned this record more than anything I own. Records, tapes, CD. They keep getting stolen or lost or just plain worn out. This is the darkest and most powerful X record in my humble opinion. Exene had just lost her sister and the lyrics are her own personal mourning project. The music is really rich and layered which was different from the first two albums. Everyone should own a copy of this underrated classic.
Stones Goats Head Soup. This is a great record to just put on and let play in the background. Really great tunes but the standout is Star Star. This is one of their best tunes but you never hear it because it's totally X-rated. Listen to the lyrics. It really reminds me of Messy Stench.
Pink Floyd's The Wall. Comfortably Numb and Mother were made for rainy days. At least that's my opinion. This is great record and worth owning even if you would never consider liking dinosaur rock. It's just an artistic masterpiece regardless of what your tastes are.
Take care,
Steve (imaboutado)
Posted by: Steve at February 22, 2005 03:56 PM
The Heart of Sturday Night is made for rainy weather, but I don't know what you mean by lost his voice. Is that literally or he lost his musical genius?

He then removes 3 of them and asks me to memorize them (so I do)..after the interview I told him what they were.
5 spades, 7 hearts & 6 diamonds...what the hell this had to do with me getting the job??? - i'm still wondering.
Just though I'd give everyone on this site a good laugh.
Have to write a song about this shit.

Hey you guys, am I getting old or ARE today's kids the ultimate losers, most of whom should be beat to death? I'm honestly trying to figure that out. (I'm leaning towards the latter, so far.)
Nah, I think we are just getting older. Don't you remember how passionate you were about your music and the old farts just never seemed to understand? Only now the kids today have the internet to hide behind to spew thier angst onto.
I remember getting a mark in the 50% area for submitting an analysis of Metallica's song 'Blackened' in an English class. Later that year I did a similar assignment and used the Beatles 'The Walrus' and got 90% on it. I doubt very much I was really graded on the content of my paper, but rather the English instructor 'understood' the later song as it was a rebellious song of her youth.
I work with teens everyday and it is funny to see a bit of myself at that age in almost all of them. Don't worry, they will all go through the same sh*t when thier kids hit puberty! I can only imagine what will replace the internet by then!!

I agree that there is a difference between art and entertainment and that a piece can be the product of both… To me, art is a form of expression borne out of a person's creativity, whether it be film, dance, music, literature, architecture, sculpture, painting, drawing, graphic design, or other mediums. It's a representation of the artist's talent/skill and can emote the artist's state of being at the time of its creation/delivery. Whether or not it's entertaining is the perception of the audience… I associate entertainment more with works that are presented expressly for amusement, recreational, or diversionary purposes. There is so much commercialization today that it's hard to draw the line sometimes between the two… Speaking of which, I think marketing and promotional productions have fallen under the entertainment category in our advertising age, no?
Posted by: cx at February 22, 2005 06:18 PM
Blink 182 can't break up really~they're too busy marketing their clothing range. Hence the "hiatus".
Yeah, I read Kerrang! That's what they're doing. Said so a couple of months back. Blame Kerrang! if that info is incorrect.
(and if it's boring too)
Dave~You said Messy was sexy cos she don't give a fuck (or something like that) and that made me think..I bet she doesn't have kids yet?!

yeah im gonna have to agree with tara on this one, i think its just the generation gap, i mean im 15 and i guess im smart enough not to like most of todays music (however i do like blink, im just not gonna shit a brick over them breaking up, cuz that is what an "indefinite hiatus with no plans to reform" is last time i checked.) But yeah, i guess these kids have their generation of music just like you had yours....only yours was better haha.
its definatly weird when my friends are all listening to bands that only have an album out, and my favorite bands are starting to put ouit greatest hits records! (this is definatly not counting 60's, 70's and 80's bands who had greatest hits albums beore i was born haha)
keep on rockin kids.

I know you already answered one question regarding THE CURE, but here is another. I do not own any albums from them, sorry. I know that I should, so my question is:
¿Which 2 or 3 albums from THE CURE are mandatory for any CD collection? (Not including any Greatest Hits albums)
¿Do you ever watch INSOMNIAC WITH DAVE ATTELL on Comedy Central?

This just in: Sum41, 311, Stroke9, Eve6, The B52s, 10000 maniacs, and U2 have all been made illegal by the Bush Administration's Constitional Amendment banning bands with numbers in their names as they are a threat to the institution of, well, band names without numbers.

To Ashley n Bryce: thanks for making me no longer think that any blink fan who writes here is a whiney bitch. I dont relate to the music you like Ashley, but I can definatly relate to the passion in your post, n you werent rude. So f*!k the dude who dissed you here. One of my favorite bands-Phish went on hiatus only to break up two years later. When they initially went on hiatus, there was lots of speculation they broke up. Cant get angry bout speculation. Until Trey announce the bands plans, I was glad to get any update-opinion I could from phans and the media. You got a speculation here-be thankful and see what happens. Also to Bryce: I think Im a better musician than Blink 186 but I only have a demo thus far. The amount of material may only mean you have studio access. A record deal is something to be proud of too, but I have a friend who got a deal with Revelation Records for coke debts owed amongst associates. Others have deals because there shit may sell to an audience (could be an audience of pediphiles and people who eat boogers, or rape but if it sells youll get a deal).
Welcome to Boots101! Sorry to lecture, I probably sound like your Dad! The most important thing in music is the passion. There are passionate musicians and passionate listeners. In my mind, those are the ones who are best off-no matter what genre or style/fusion they dig. Go to any major city and youll find that passion because youll find the light in the strangest of places!

Thanks Bryce for seeing things from an older perspective. I grew up listening to a lot of my Dad's LP's. He was in a band or two and we share a common passion for music. He'd always do this awful thing in the car. A song would be playing on the stereo and he would always intrrupt me to turn up the volume and say, 'ok, ok who is this? What year? Who is the drummer/singer etc'
I hated it at the time, but now I find myself doing this to my poor friends. I have developed my own personal taste in music (much to the dissmay of some friends) but I feel I was brought up with a very balanced exposure to music. Bluegrass to rock, soul to funk, rock to metal, and classical to blues. I was always encouraged to experiment with music. The only thing my Dad would not let me bring into the house was the Suicidal Tendencies first LP as it had the song 'i saw your mommy and your mommy's dead' on it. It bothered him. So i listened to it at a friends.
Anywho- just throwing that out there.
I got your email Rosie-thanks!

do I have a question? sorta wish I did. Probably will eventually. Stay cool Dave lol. I love Jane's Addiction, RHCP more so (sorry if that offends you... lol), and heard of an internet album that you made but I can't seem to find it in my odd internet laziness. If it's not too much trouble, could you post somewhere where I could get it? (I haven't even checked *all* the links here on your site yet..)

hey guys, just letting you know, not all blink182 fans are dicks. i'm upset by what happened, but i understand that dave was just doing a harmless recap of the night, and honestly, i think it's cool that he wished them luck and acknowledged that. much respect goes out to him for that, even if the rest of blink's fans are pricks, i'm reasonable about it.
Posted by: TR at February 22, 2005 09:46 PM
Hi Mike,
I know this question was for Dave....but I'm answering it anyway....lol
Re The Cure, they're my fave band. I own almost all of their stuff. Been listening to them from the beginning, I saw them at a small NYC club called Hurrah, when only about 25 people were there that night! lol
I used to be into getting the 'obscure' Import B-sides etc, but that just got toooo crazy! lol And I am talking vinyl here!
I then had to go out & replace all the vinyl on CDs. I also tried to track down the EP CD B-sides, forget that. But I did get a few. They also have three 'official' live albums too!!
The extended version of "Why Can't I Be You" is the best version of that song, definitely track that down!
As far as the CDs.....I would suggest tht you get them ALL, even their very early, super depressing Goth albums, "Faith", "Seventeen Seconds", "Pornography" & "The Top"...though many find those very difficult to listen to straight through.
I guess..."Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" & "Disintergration" are excellent places to start. I LOVE the remix CD "Mixed Up" and of course, "The Head On The Door", which made them into pop stars, is pretty great!
Happy Hunting!

"Which 2 or 3 albums from THE CURE are mandatory for any CD collection? (Not including any Greatest Hits albums)"
In order... Disintegration, Kiss me, kiss me, kiss me and Pornography.
and even though you said no 'best of' collections, i highly recommend the connect the dots box set that just came out. Mostly B sides, soundtrack songs, and rarities. Awesome stuff.
And I agree with Dave, The Kiss is my altime fave Cure song, followed by Burn (off the Crow soundtrack) A forest, the same deep water, and like cockatoos.
(off to go listen to the cure in the rain while smoking a clove...)

i have to be honest and tell you that i was never crazy about you, but since i wound your blog -by coincidence- i am really starting to love you. Everyday, i look forward to reading what you have posted. Very entertaining, in a non-hollywood way, and honest.
Love the cure, love "kiss me (3)", but my favourite cure songs would have to be "pictures of you", "love cats" or "never enough" which is an anthem for my life.
last thing before i leave you; where do you get the time to write here?
kisses and much love
a new found fan

Hi Dave,
I sincerely don't want to advetize here, but I'm not sure how else to get in touch. Since you use Typepad, I was wondering if you'd be interested in using one of our camera phones to blog straight from your phone, e.g. when you're on the road. Write to me if you're interested, and we can send you one of our latest phones and show you how it's done :)

Good luck to you and Steve both! Sounds like a blast.

Dave remember what you said, I'm paraphrasing, it's about smoking:
"Who cares what the inside of my lungs look like, I care about my outside" :D - great words they be.
Do you still consider yourself a vain person (I read this in an interview somewhere), and are or were you insecure whether about looks or just yourself? What are your thoughts?
My general idea is why worry about how I look or what others think, but I've realized recently I'm a pretty insecure guy - inside and out, and that doesn't bode well for relationships.

The ultimate Cure song is "The Walk"~ The Upstairs Room is great too. Go way back in their catalog for the best. Okay, they may say "Let's Go To Bed" isn't 'typical' Cure, I say up yours; cos it's the greatest. It's fun. Give me the fun ones. "Love Cats" Get the old videos too. Bouncy fun! :D
"The Walk
Release Date: 7/5/1983
Format: Single

So, go with the album "Japanese Whispers". This is all crazy Cure talk. Anyway, that was THE one to get back in the heyday.
Posted by: ylais at February 23, 2005 04:30 AM
You know, I'm shocked at the Cure choices on here for the USA. Yours are about 4-5 plus years after The Cure were pop stars in the UK. That used to shock me when I was in college in the States. Everyone getting into The Cure in like 1986 or 1987?! Whoa! Before that I'd endured years of being made fun for listening to that "garbage".
A snippet of my past.

Oh for god sakes! I've just been informed that my post seems to mean I'm calling The Cure garbage. No. I am saying people told me The Cure's music was garbage, and because I listened to it I was therefore garbage, and I used to play them on the college radio, back then, so I was putting myself on the line.
(Hope that satisfies you Mr. David Cole :P )

please stop trashing dave navarro for making a fuckin' mistake. i know how difficult it must be for all of you people who are squeaky clean perfect to call someone out on a misunderstanding. it's so pathetic, find something else to do. i would never try and start any shit here but it's so old now to keep reading all these little 'poor me' entries. peace.

First, Dave, I hope we get to hear you on the talkshow. My hubby has been an on-air personality for over 17 years, and he has a talk show that I try to catch (it is on while I am at work and we can't pick up any radio stations at my job - something about the high tension lines).
The question about the cards being presented during the interview. I had a similar situation a few years ago. What it shows the interviewer is how quickly you can learn and retain information. Depending on what the job was for, your instant recall may be a nessecity.
So, is the card tournament to benefit anything? Or is it just for fun? Sounds like it should be fun.
And Dave, saw in Star this week that Carmen got it for the best luggage and the best dressed. How do you feel about that?
Always,
me
P.S. Isn't it time to drop the Blink thing?
Posted by: Angel at February 23, 2005 06:39 AM
I read that you and Carmen own the "Lord" and "Lady" ring set by Michael Spirito? Is this true and do you guys wear them if so? I LOVE his stuff. It's gorgeous and very different. I was thinking about the set for me and mine. Thanks.

oh one more thing. there is nothing 'PUNK' about BLINK. PUT THEM on a bill back in the 80's with the DEAD KENNEDYS, the CIRCLE JERKS, BLACK FLAG, etc... see how they fare. that's punk rock to you little kids. now all there is is watered down POP/ROCK bands that dye their hair and shave a mohawk AND ADOPT THE NAME OF A GENRE THAT THEY WANT TO REPRESENT BUT HAVE NONE OF THE PRINCIPLES TO BACK IT UP. i just couldn't see the marquee of any club read TONIGHT: BLINK 182, WITH SPECIAL GUESTS BAD BRAINS AND AGNOSTIC FRONT. thank god we have bands like TPC to keep true rock music alive. DAVE is being respectful and humble enough not to start any bullshit on this great website where everyone is cool w/ each other.... so just SHUT THE f*** UP and go CRY somewhere else.
Posted by: sonicdeath at February 23, 2005 06:53 AM
I didn't want to bring it up any more than it already has been, but I feel compelled to...
This right from Blink 182's official website...

A gap or interruption in space, time, or continuity; a break:
Ummm, I'd say that means they won't be playing together, right? Who cares for how long. Taking a BREAK means BREAKING up, even if it's not forever. That is the same thing, right? I hope these imbecile's who TRIED or thought they were lighting up Dave feel really fuckin' puerile.

Thanks Dave, blink 182 IS broken up after all.. You jinxed it.. do you know what Karma is? Because thats' what will happen to you. There are almost 3,000 comments on the blink site in 1 day since the news. I really have lost respect for you. I used to think you were an awesome guy. Ive been to lollapalooza to see you play.. you were almost as good as a blink show. ALMOST. but no one could ever live up to play like they did.
Posted by: Sarena Walker at February 23, 2005 07:42 AM
you're gonna blame dave for blink breaking up? ^^^^^
Posted by: sonicdeath at February 23, 2005 07:57 AM
(Oh, God
what´s next? Death threats?? In a psycho withcy voice: "You killed the Blink, you killed the Blink!!!")
Sooooo... other than bands for kids who don´t know their left from right breaking up, what else is on the menu today...? Honestly, I´d rather talk about Dave´s abs than all this stuff any day. (dammit, I´d rather talk about Dave´s abs than about most things any day!) I bet you peeps would to.
So why don´t we just get back to Dave worshipping, shall we...?
Love to all the fam and to the stray 182 fans who wandered here by mistake (and don´t get mad – I´m just taking the piss cos I believe this whole thing has been blown insanely out of proportion and enough is enough and all that... cheers!)
Love, anyway. I shall remain your humble servant,
Luiz.
(That Guy from Brazil)
PS: It´s such a cool thing that Dave wants to be nice and fair and just and all that and won´t rant openly about stuff (except that dreadful Terminator Musical, that one really sucked donkey balls...! lol) Yes, it´s really cool he won´t do that... BUT... We can!! lol
PS2: Just to make it clear once again:Dave has NOTHING to do with B182 (and thank God for that!)
Don´t take this stuff too seriously - it´s only rock and roll, it´s not even music...! lol

ok, I promised myself I wouldn't but....
Is anyone here a Friends fan? This line comes to mind

Hi Dave & co.
I just wanted wish everyone a lovely morning. I'm reading all the posts about the Cure and am now itching to whip out my Cure CDs and reminisce. I think I'm gonna listen to them on my way home today...
Incidentally, I do a great vocal impersonation of Robert Smith. If any of us ever get together, I'll have to do it for y'all. :)
Be well,
-Denise

You crack me up Jez!!
(I can picture Ross's brain vein pulsing out and his hands waving all over the place)
It's a beautiful day today people, walk out, breath in the air and SMILE.
Posted by: Junebug at February 23, 2005 08:39 AM
Denise~I'd love to hear your Robert Smith!
To all the Blink 182 fans~ Sorry about the news about 'your band'. Bands break up a lot and get back together again, and do reunion tours. How many have The Stones done?! Some don't, but you'll find other bands you like.
Well, I need a rest. I'm on hiatus for a couple of hours.

Well the Bad Brains would never play with them more then likely because HR's crazy ass would wind up in Equador or some shit all of a sudden.
Bad Brains!!!!
Listening to Sacred Love
As for Blink sorry to hear about them my cousin who has tour extensively with them back in the day is pretty bummed since he's friends with them. Hopefully everything will work out for them though.
Dave brotha man hope you're keeping dry.

Does Blink182 have any songs I might recognize being I dont have any albums of theirs and I dont listen to the radio too much other than Howard Stern and in my Van at work which has no tape/cd. How long was Blink 182 together, and how old are they? Just curious, seeing all the hype bout this band I thought was kiddie pop for chrildren. I admit I could be totally wrong, and thats my past assumptions. So what were they really, a pop band, a punk band, rock n roll, heroin rockers, lip singers, voice of a generation, or a high school fad?

Dave (and all of you Blink Fans commenting above!!) -
FYI - from KROQ in NYC:
Who Blinked First?
There was more to Blink-182’s cancellation at the Music For Relief benefit show that initially met the eye. Camp Freddy’s Dave Navarro hinted at a split in his website blog, and now comes word that the band has decided to take “an indefinite hiatus. A statement on the matter reads: “For over a decade, Blink-182 has toured, recorded and promoted non-stop all while trying to balance relationships with family and friends. To that end, the band has decided to go on an indefinite hiatus to spend some time enjoying the fruits of their labors with loved ones. While there is no set plan for the band to begin working together again, no one knows what tomorrow may bring. At present, tomorrow will at least bring a new album from drummer Travis Barker’s side project, The Transplants. It is not known if Tom DeLonge or Mark Hoppus will be pursuing individual musical interests.
Looks like you weren't that far off :)
