Hey Dave,

"Then She Did" remains to be a most valued escape into hypnotic orchestration, power, and beauty for me. I have often wondered if you and Perry connected in this song due to both of your losses concerning your mothers. I understand if you do not wish to comment on something so personal, but I wanted to thank you for your profound and inspiring contributions to the soundtrack of my and so many others lives.

Sincerely,
Humdrum

So I was watching a bunch of kids here last night. We put on Uptown Girls. And in your cameo, my niece said, "Hey that's the guy who's picture you got put in the newspaper." And my 8 year old says, "Yep, we watched him on Celebrity Poker Showndown and he should have won!" Well, what can you expect with a group of 8 to 10 year olds!

Is it true Then She Did was originally Then She Died...? I heard the name was changed to make it less personal

Hey Dave! I love your book. I hate parting from it. I'm starting to carry it places, just to read when I have nothing to do. And Dave... If ANYBODY says that it was stupid to put out your book, dont listen to them what so ever! Because Dave, I am PROUD of what you did. And I think people who read this book will appreciate it, and understand more from where you are coming from. I dont think half of the people in this world would have the guts you had to "spill" your past to us. I want you to know, dont ever regret this book. Because I love it, and I hate putting it down, and it makes me understand you more.... I guess thats what I have to say. I'm just happy you did this, dont ever let anyone tell you it was a shitty idea! have a wonderful dayy!

Cool deal w/ the TPC board! It's bookmarked and a done deal. :)

HUMDRUM - Dave has said in several interviews/articles that yes - he and Perry do share a special bond with that song.

Manq here....

Just got back from Vegas. Was w/o net access. Very shocked and saddened to see the passing of Danny Sugarman. Wonderland Avenue was such a great book. I think Kurdt Loder from MTV reviewed it on MTV News when it first came out. I bought it right away. What a great read. Anybody that is into The Doors/rock music/tales of excess, etc should read this.

He had quite a life.

I always thought his story of his after life experience should have been longer. You always here the tales of people seeing the white lights, or being welcomed back by friends and loved ones. His was quite the opposite. Very dark and harrowing. In fact, the only realy scary after life experience I ever heard of.

Once I was at a Holy Barbarians show at the Viper Room when Danny and his wife Fawn Hall, came in. At one point they were at the bar and Sugarman left her to hit the men's room. I went up and started talking to Fawn Hall. I told her how I had read Danny's bools and found them fascinating and that he must be a very interesting person to know. Suddenly she said, "Why aren't you to talking to him??" I said, "Well Faw, because I'm talking to you." I smiled and took off.

Manq out......

Dave, if I may, a little advice:
I quit smoking last April after 22 years. I tried on and off through the years, but wasn't able to. So when i finally REALLY set my mind to it, the big thing I found was to NOT tell anyone I was quitting. It made the pressure so much less on me. I let my wife notice on her own, and she had the common sense not to make a big deal of it.
Of course you've quit tougher things than smoking, so it should be a cakewalk for you, but that's just my two cents:)

In regards to Janes last album and TPC's new music it seems that the song writing has lost a lot of it's "depth" and grandure. (Don't get me wrong..They are all great songs, but) Do you think that it is possible to write epics like Three Days and beautiful moody songs like Then She Did while sober? It seems that most of the great bands were at their most creative and the song writing was at it's most important when they were all drugged up. Will you ever write songs of that caliber again?

Posted by: tbone at January 10, 2005 01:23 AM

Tbone that's bollocks man! (IMO)
Why do people keep going on about old JA???

JA was great, but it happened at a certain time in certain social and creative circumstances that can't be
reproduced. Nothing will compare even if what is produced after is technically as good because it didn't happen then. Everyone's head was in a certain place when Jane's hit. I just watched 'Three Days' and it put me right back to the time I first heard 'Had A Dad' but I wouldn't want the creatives that were JA to spend the rest of their days doing relapse tours or making new music with the aim to reproduce classic JA songs.

Awesome message board....will be checking it out a lot the next few days....next I want merchandise and the CD of course (demanding little thing, ain't I?)

RE: Ex-boyfriends/relationships.....I had an ex call me completely out of the blue on Saturday....hadn't seen or heard from him in over a decade, and suddenly he calls--he found a box of our old "stuff" and just wanted to call and say hi....I at first found it weird but am now thinking how cool that 1.) He remembered me (and I've got to say, much better than I remembered him) and 2.) Love is forever.

Please, Dave, do "seriously consider" quitting smoking....we (and I am sure Carmen) would like you around for a long time!

Jess, I am glad to know others loved "DTTAH" as much as me....I take it with me everywhere, as I get something different out of it each time I read sections of it....

Danny Sugerman--what an interesting guy, and I think it is very cool he made his being a fan into a career....Dave, do you need a new assistant?

Have any of you ever fallen asleep on the bathroom floor cuddling up to a 6" Chef's knife, and in doing so, finding a unique sense of calm just because the knife is there? Let's just say it was a fucked up weekend. I seem to be ok now though... so please don't bombard me with worry messages. I am comforted simply by the presence of this board.

"5. On CFR last night, did you say that you were definitely going to quit smoking, or that you were going to think about it?

I am seriously thinking about it."

Hi Dave,

I know you're a big fan of Soundgarden.

Do you know anything about Kim Thayil? Since 98 I haven't heard anything about him.

What I only know, is that Chris Cornell and another Soundgarden member (don't know who is the other) are filming a documentary based on the life of Andrew Wood.

All the best.

Good morning everyone! Its the boot-man checkin in. Noone has ever responded to this question-so here it is again: Courtney Love wants to collaborate with Dave-whats everyones response. I bet Kurt is rollin in his grave knowing shes working with Billy Corgan! Maybe not? Im supportive of any music collaborations. I thought Live Through This was incredible. Im really curious of your guys opinions! This morning I was reminded by the radio that Phil Spector is a murderer. I have such a hard time accepting this-the man was such a genius. I guess he was really someone I looked up to as a musical genius, and therefore uncognitively labeled the man a god. On that note-Anyone hear Brian Wilsons new album? It got great reviews. My musical taste is all over the place, im shure daily post readers have notice that by now. From Ween to Miles Davis to the Meat Puppets to Bela Fleck. Hey Dave-ever check out any live Phish? I can assure you this, its funky ass stuff.

Much love

Mentioned it to a friend who thought I'd downloaded a Fish from Marillion show, didn't speak to me for days... the tw@t. Glide seem to update their download section every few weeks and have had some gems on, unfortunately its Mark Knofler this week, 'nuff said. Got some brilliant Neil Young and Beck off it though.

Hi all,

I'm checking out both sites now, and figured I'd check here. How are ya doin'?

BOOTS - Re: The Dave/Courtney thing. I'm like, "Whatever. If it happens, great." I guess I'm more excited about TPC and Camp Freddy. Obviously, with Dave's involvement, any music will ROCK. As far as Courtney goes, I really dig some of Hole's music. But as for the woman herself, I could take her or leave her. She's entertaining at times and clearly brilliant, but IMO she needs to get off her high horse. (In more ways than one.) If you want to be seen as a talented musician, make a spectacle of yourself through your music, not through insane acts of desperation.

Again, just my opinion. If she's cleaning up her act, good for her and I wish her well.

Posted by: Denise at January 10, 2005 10:17 AM

Dave question

Q. When working on new original music do you even think about songs, sounds or colours that you produced in the past and does the impact of JA's original success loom behind you like a big black shadowy looming thing?

I ask this after reading threads with the theme of 'will we ever get songs like...and will you ever do widdly solos etc etc'

Please answer I'd really like to know.

Hi Dave,

I don't think this question has actually been asked.....have you ever been interested in composing soundtrack music a la, Danny Elfman? As you probably know, Elfman was in Oingo Boingo before becoming Tim Burton's main soundtrack composer. He's also composes music for TV etc.

It's been discussed here a lot about how rock music (r'n'b etc) is always being used in movies (& TV ads), yet there doesn't seem to be much new rock music being composed for films.

Basically, there's just a bunch of already recorded tracks being used to set the 'mood' & help these movies chug along. In short, to create the 'atmosphere' or to add an emotional spark to a scene. Sometimes it just doesn't work, as so many of these songs just don't fit into these current films.

It would be nice, once in awhile, to hear soundtrack music which was actually created for the specific movie. Or for the song rolling over the credits, to have been written for the film, these days that doesn't seem to be the case.

'Deconstruction' has always sounded like soundtrack music, of course I mean that in a very good way!

I think you would be great at composing soundtrack music, if you ever want to do that on the side.

Your thoughts....

take care,
itanja

Posted by: itanja at January 10, 2005 11:28 AM

Dave-are you keeping 6767 going now that TPC community is up and running?I sure hope so.

Steve L

Posted by: MOOYYAA at January 10, 2005 12:14 PM

itanja -

I am with you on that. I think Dave's a great guitar player because he creates an atmosphere of sound -- ethereal and perfect, and uniquely him. Obviously, he could shred, or do a "widdly solo" (thanks, Nik) but I am glad that he just does what he does because so often those "solos" by other players are just obligatory and sound like it. Someone here mentioned Steve Vai -- he's an example of this. Technically amazing and deserving of the vituoso label, but so smug about it! He'll stop and look to the audience with this air of superiority that just says "adore me NOW - you'll never pull that off, peons!". Totally turns me off. Dave, on the other hand, keeps to the "soul" of the music, with a touch that is amazing. As a guitar player, I may never reach that level, but I can continue to be inspired and amazed by it. Dave feels what he plays and it shows. So, yeah, I think some soundtrack music would be awesome. I know you asked for Dave's thoughts, itanja, but those are mine...

Dave, what do you think about this?

algermom

ps - Panic Community is goin' on!

Posted by: algermom at January 10, 2005 12:38 PM

Dave is one of my top two favourite guitarists but I don't think he's technically that good but I've never thought that being a technical master meant you could make music. On saying that Dave does have more than a passing understanding of technique!

Posted by: Nik at January 10, 2005 01:01 PM

David~

I hadn't heard about the Andy Wood bio. MLB is one of the best underrated bands Seattle produced, what details have you heard?

Posted by: Rantz at January 10, 2005 01:06 PM

Dave has admitted himself that he doesn't really know tech stuff, equipment wise.
Playin' wise he knows his shit.
There are so many great guitarists in the world covering a whole spectrum of styles, writing a riff that hasn't been done before must be a bit of a bitch.

Steve L

Posted by: MOOYYAA at January 10, 2005 01:27 PM

Ha ha, yeh Steve, some people do get obsessed with being original. What is original? Just as long as it's good that's all I want.

Posted by: Nik at January 10, 2005 01:37 PM

Ditto Nik

I read an interview with Dave ages ago, ithink in the Chili Pepper era, where he said something like-today's music has got here by piggy-backing on whats gone before.
Something like that.

The Aviator was a little too fluffy for my taste. I agree with Dave, who wanted to see the hairy, germaphobic, reclusive, drug-addled Hughes, more in the Melvin and Howard vein

Dave was actually in a movie called Floundering, starring James LeGross. A bit part of Dave playing an acid dealer in Venice beach, crica Chili Peppers era. It's funny to see.

Posted by: Rantz at January 10, 2005 03:10 PM

Thanks for your feedback algermom~!

Glad someone else is hearing it!

Everytime I listen to 'Deconstruction'...I hear an excellent soundtrack in search of a movie! lol

It's very California sounding, it would have been great for "Two Day's in the Valley" or some other California themed movie. Especially 'LA Song".

take care,
itanja

Posted by: itanja at January 10, 2005 03:30 PM

Yes, there are some stills of Dave in 'Floundering' floating around on the Net.

As for 'The Aviator', I enjoy when a director/producer takes a little more care in hiring actors who actually look a little like the people they are suppossed to be portraying.

DeCaprio looks nothing like Howard Hughes! Hughes had brown eyes & black hair.

I'm not crazy about Colin Farrell, but he actually looks like the young Hughes.

If the directors/producers are so concerned about accomodating the movie going demographics, Farrell would have been a great choice. He's popular, young, appeals to men & women and has a following.
