CF Update
Last night in Vegas was insane! Let me try to figure this out and see what I can remember about the show:
I know we played with Joan Jett, Xzibit, Tone Loc, Scott Wieland, Macy Grey, Juliet Lewis, Steve Jones, Jerry Cantrell, Billy Duffy, Tony Kanal... Who else? It was just killer. Also, there was like this porn convention going on so it was really extra off the hook. I described it to a friend as being like hell on a good day. We did the usual set of Sex Pistols, Bowie, T-Rex, and all that, flanked with some hip hop like Macy singing Blondie's Rapture with Tone doing the middle rap. We also rocked his classic Wild Thing with the Halen riff, Jamie's Crying. Chaney came up with a killer groove and we just free style jammed with Xzibit. That was killer. Ironically, my Grand National happens to be at West Coast Customs right now getting all "like new". I wouldn't say it's being pimped, as I am just having paint and interior done. No PlayStations or fish tanks or turntables. I just want it to look nice. Joan, a first timer for Freddy, did Bad Reputation and Pretty Vacant with us. I'll tell you, she looked and sounded awesome.

How's that for timing? LOL I must be like, number 3 or 4.
Sounds like last night was a blast... I would've loved to have seen that. What an amazingly eclectic bunch!
Wow... Tone Loc... there's a blast from the past. I didn't even know he was still around!
Thanks for the update, Dave, and I hope everyone has a great day/evening.

I am a very proud and happy boy right now.
The graphic novel that I spent a year working on is FINALLY out on the shleves. If you go to the local Barnes and Noble, you can find it there, or you can order it through our friends at amazon...
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0316000477/qid=1105041907/sr=1-18/ref=sr_1_18/103-0500491-1183865?v=glance&s=books
It's an 'educational' graphic novel aimed at the 8-16 market on financial literacy. Little Brown is taking a risk doing this project, and if it sells through its first print run of 12k, then there are projects waiting in the wings they want to do. Projects that I'd get to be the editor and art director for, so I kinda have a vested interest in this...LOL
If you buy a copy, I'll be your friend, or at least to be so in public. Kids love it. Parent love it. It makes a swell gift for your pets this coming Valentines day! Thanks for letting me announce that, back to your banter in progress :)

Hey Dave,
I've been trying to start a Jane's Addiction tribute band for a while now here in LA. But I just realized I probably need to ask first. May I have your blessing?

Hey Jess,
Hair! A subject that I'm very familiar with, being from the tri-state area. :)
Re: Carmen's haircuts - Have you ever checked out any of the celebrity hairstyle magazines? I forget the exact names of them (Maybe "Celebrity Hairstyles"?), but I always see them in supermarkets and in the salons. I'm SURE they've done profiles of Carmen and her hair at some point. Try old back-issues.
Usually the articles are pretty generic. "So-and-so has an angled cut with long layers." But you may find something helpful.
One more thing: I'm told that a LOT of celebs use extensions to lengthen or to thicken their hair for photo shoots. So it's more than just expert cutting and blow-drying.
In any case, best of luck to you!

Welcome back home Mr. Navarro.
Wow what line up that show was! Rapture, Wild Thing, A Ramones cover with Wieland...!
20 20 24 hours ago.. I wanna be sedated...
Rantz!! I know that book, i didn't realize you were involved in it! Great job! I'm going to get a copy for my dad, he's going to love that.
you guys know what? all that talk in the last post about DTTAH brought about a sudden inspiration for me and I started writing a short story. It's one that is from a bit of a different perspective. You have to be really open-minded when reading so it's probably not for sensitive readers. It deals with similar things DTTAH and Scar Tissue deal with. Between you and me, it's autobiographical although it doesn't read like an autobiography written in first person.
I've written most of it already and will put it up on my blog once it's finished. It's something I'm doing for myself basically, because the writing of it for me has become a purging of all these things pent up inside. It's feeling damn good to be writing it all out, let me tell ya...

Hello
This is my first post, but I have been checking in daily since I read your book- Which I was totally blown away by. I really believe it is valuable commentary. I am also fascinated by your commitment and/or drive to document your experiences.
The question I have is about the note you left for Fiona Apple (in blood). What did it say?
I am very excited about the prospect of an art show- Is possible it would end up anywhere on the East coast?

That's sounds amazing. I love all of those people (esp Tony from No Doubt-what a cool bass style). I saw Joan Jett and Loverboy in concert when I was 7(musician dads are the best), so she has a special place in my heart.

A porn convention *and* great music--other than there not being a chocolate-tasting festival going on, I'd say all that sounds like Heaven to me!
Oh, and Dave, welcome back to your party--we've missed you! Glad you have had a great time there though!

You 6767 fags are so gay. You admins thought you banned me think again assholes. I have millions of IPs at my disposal. Dave is a misguided sellout. The only way Dave can recapture what he used to be is more heroin, less Carmen and a backseat to either Perry Farrell or Eric Avery.
You can't hide the truth. :)

Elizabeth - I loved your post! So true!

Newsflash....John Q. Public has 'millions' of IPs at his disposal....Who knew that Bill Gates disliked Dave so much....
and redundant too....yes, John, fags ARE gay....hence the word "fag"
Hi everybody, Blanca where are you?
Rantz, I like the book, did you say you have illustrated others, would you be interested in coming out to Fontana one afternoon to talk with my cherubs about illustration...?

Awwwww,
Poor little John Q, has to much time on his hands. So what he likes to do is come over to this web site and talk trash. You know "John Q" what you can do with does Millions of IPs? Stick them straight up your ass. Better yet dont do that you might like that to much!

Hi Dave,
Sounded like a great line-up, which we on the EAST COAST, unfortunately, never seem to see & experience! ;(
Btw, was Joan's old guitarist Ricky Byrd there?
I used to hang with Ricky back in the day when I was a photographer. I shot all the local NYC bands he was in. Then he got 'the call' to join Joan & got 'famous'! (I think his wife, a publicist, helped him with the Joan connection) Last I heard, he was working with Roger Daltrey.
Saw Weiland in STP a few times, even at his most messed up, he was still awesome! Always in great voice. Caught the STP SNL repeat the other day, excellent!
Hearing about all these great rockers makes me realise how flooded with crappy music the radio airwaves are, no wonder my radio/tuner switch is always on OFF!
Seriously, the only radio I listen to is Indie 103!
take care,
itanja

we shouldn't make fun of JohnQ - I mean he's prolly got a list of people that were mean to him somewhere. Seriously JQ -- let it go.. even if it were funny, it's just old.. Ok... DAVE'S A BIG SELLOUT... BLAH BLAH BLAH..
i don't get the "what dave once was" thing.. He still plays guitar, he's still in a band, he's still in LA, he still wears black a lot.. i mean WTF?
So what makes him a sellout exactly? OH>> that's right.. he makes a few $$ here and there.. Real Artist are poor..
To quote Gene Simmons *another sellout*: You're an artist... then paint my house. You want to make some money? Write some songs people wanna listen to."
and JQ - please respond.. BEOTCH!
Posted by: b at January 6, 2005 05:50 PM
Jezz
yeah I've done other comics, my primary job is being the creative director for a videogame company with comics and illustration done on the side to make extra cash or just work on cool projects.
I have four kids of my own, two of which are in school so I'm well versed in the talking in front of classrooms bit. It would depend on timing, whether or not I could do it.
to JQ Hundreds fo IP addys and you're wasting them all on self-righteous vitriol? Well... now *there* is a good use of resources.

Beautiful People,
I love how people can be so hell bent on reliving the past. As if their words are going to send shockwaves and then in a blink of an eye things are what they used to be. For instance exp. “Hey Dave go back to almost killing yourself because you would then be playing with Perry Or like for instance exp. the type of person who when your go to a local bar in your hometown that you left ages ago, your sitting at a bar, and hearing that same shit head that never made it out in the real world reliving the last five minutes when he scored a touchdown that won the game back in High School that nobody gives a fuck about anymore! Who fucking cares? Ohhhh these three simple words “used to be.
I only wish they can take that first step called acceptance/moving on. However, I guess this needs to be expressed instead, since my New Year’s Resolution didn’t include being patient and this is getting old.
So enjoy this one pal.
John Q/ Fidel Castro “If your past looks better than your future you’re a has been.
I guess you’re fucked then?
Brett
BTW:B-exactly!!!! I couldn't agree with you more on that!
Posted by: Brett at January 6, 2005 05:57 PM
what i don't understand is that these fans aren't happy that music is being made by the people they supposedly "love" (or whatever it i sthey do..)
how far are JQ/fidel from the guy that robbed the world of dimebag?
i don't get this ownership some people feel they have over celebrities. like dave owes us anything? he gave us some amazing music! if anything - WE OWE HIM!! the fans don't own the artist!
anyway, rant over.. off my box.
like it'll make any difference.
Posted by: ooftymcgoofty at January 6, 2005 06:12 PM
Dave and 6767's,
This is the last time I ever plan on addressing this.
By my usual silence on posts from the disenchanted, I am stating what I feel. I don't have time for souls such as "Fidel" and others. If I want gibberish in my life, I'll take a walk to any "Strip Mall USA". It's just not worth it. I can understand that some of us are a bit passionate about this community, hell I am, but to respond to this junk is useless. It eggs that person to spawn more crap. We can't control these folks from doing this. We can change how we react to them. If we ignore them, they will move on. Their thrill will be gone and they shall seek other greenery. So how about we just let it go and enjoy this for what it is, with all who have allowed this to thrive!
Cheers,
Mike C. (FLA)

Mike C, I totally agree with you. There are much better things here to respond to than such nonsense. For example, your Tony Bennett suggestion; HELL YEAH! Tony Bennett onstage with Camp Freddy would be totally out of control! How severely would that rock!?!? I'd love to see a really bizarre lineup, like Tony Bennett, Manson, Prince, and Trent doing a rendition of, oh, I don't know, She Sells Sanctuary or something.
Thanks guys, for the prayers and good vibes. No new news, but we really appreciate your positive thoughts.

Dave,
This message will probally get lost in the sea of blogs that is this thread. I've never posted before, although I have worte numerous messages and erased them many times over, in fear of one thing or anohter. I just wanted to say thank you, and only thank you instead rambling on about how you have influenced my life. The past 5 years have been rough for me and I have recently just pulled my life togather. Now I am a music major at Rutgers University and in a band called Silence the Fall. While moving on from the shit storm that was my life to the point where my life is at now, I have always looked towards your art for constant comfort. Thank you. I don't think I will post anymore because I feel like if I continue doing what I'm doing maybe one day our paths will cross and I will get to rock with. Peace.
p.s.
I once read that you were given an amp that David Gilmore used while recording The Wall. That has to be the coolest damn thing ever. Have you hever used it on any of your recordings?

Oh, happy day! Just got an email from The Mars Volta…new single “The Widow, “ new album Frances the Mute In Stores March 1, 2005! And on tour now (too bad in Japan) but hopefully they will hit the east coast this spring!
On a weird note, anyone see the new Star magazine? Flipping through, a page caught my eye, thought it was Dave. Well, it IS Dave, but just his body with Britney Spears’ husband’s head on it. Apparently they said his (Kevin’s) style is really bad an gave him a makeover with his head on Dave’s body! It’s the white pinstriped suit w/black turtleneck and white fur wrap (of course that’s probably the only pic they could find with most of Dave’s tattoos hidden). It’s definitely Dave, you can see the black nail polish and the marriage tattoo on his palm. How funny, Dave, now you’re the model for fashion for makeovers!
Have a great day everyone.

Glad you are back Dave!
Ms. Jett - got to meet and feed her a couple of times. She was the rock show at The Big Butler County Fair in Western PA. My dad, now retired, was a caterer and we cooked her veggie burgers for her. Her band was awesome!
Can't wait to hear more about it!

I'm know I'm the new girl here, but as I said, I've been lurking. I never realized there was so much animosity floating around when it comes to the re-break up of Jane's. Come on angry folks (I know you're reading)-this has happened before and how can you truly place blame when you have no clue as to the inner workings of the band. The music was incredible and always will be, but these are LIVES we are talking about! People move on and do other things, get married, get new jobs. How is Dave so different? Or Stephen, or Perry?
Dave needs LESS of Carmen? Yes, of course. I forgot. Your rock star heroes should never find love and happiness because they can no longer be quite as angst ridden as you are (the general you). After having been a Janes fan for more years than I care to mention, I was saddened to know that I won't have the opportunity to see them again live. BUT-I also don't worry that Dave is going to squirrel away in his house and overdose, or turn into a fucking drugged, depressed hermit, never to be heard from again. That time has passed and I daresay Carmen has much to do with it.
Yeah Dave. I worried about ya. I've got a crush. So what? ;P
I hope you guys try to make it out to the East Coast to play. The House of Blues at Myrtle Beach could be a lovely venue!

I think Jane's is like the first Star Wars films. It happened at a certain time under certain conditions that will always leave me under it's spell.

Oh yeah. Got the book out of David's hands. Now I'm reading it~DTTAH that is.
Enjoying it very much. Is it okay to laugh at some of it? :D I just identified with loads of it so much, but laughed. Guess that's a good sign, think I would maybe have been crying a few years back....
The beginning made me think of a play with the glass unicorn breaking. Laura and her Gentleman caller. Anyone know what play it is? :D
I did some posters and tickets for it back in San Fran, for Haight Ashbury Theatre, some community thing. Unicorns, that's what I did for it.
Love ya
Lisa

The Glass Menagerie, I have seen two movie versions, the one with Katherine Hepburn as the mom was terrific, when I was in drama in high school, I played the part of the brother....(yes, I am the 'mannish' one)
that was the first play that really 'touched' me, before then, everything I read had the prerequisite happy ending....
thanks for jogging the memory, Lisa!!
jezebel(Dave, is Carmen doing the weather tomorrow on CFR...The forecast calls for rain, followed by increasing rain, and tomorrow....rain....Is anyone going to LA car show tomorrow, let's hookup!!)

A poem:
Davey Davey
Better than gravy?
Maybe....
I'm thinking of turning into a song with a massive Three Days type drop out and solo section but for now when you read it back make sure you put a big pause in before the last line and give it some feeling.
Dave, I'm sure you'll want to record this and link it here but please make sure you contact my people first ok?

I was unaware of the family when the book tour was happening. You can bet if I had known I would have made my way from NC to a signing. Is there any way to get a signed copy? The photo booth is a brilliant concept. I am truely impressed by your intellect.

is there a better frontman in music today than weiland...or i guess I should say that has come from the 90s? i really cant think of any dominant frontman other than weiland...maybe vedder but he isnt that dynamic on stage. only one close was the guy from the Hives...although im sure im missing someone
Posted by: EmpyreLounge at January 7, 2005 08:28 AM
Nik-EXACTLY.
Janes will always be beauty, sex, mystery... because of the combined talent and inspiration of all the members. I'll be damned if I will mourn it and bitch about fault and "selling out". I celebrate the fact that it existed.
All this talk about Joan Jett has me remembering fifth grade. Now my daughters' new favorite song is Bad Reputation and she is only twelve. So young.
Of course, she has terrific taste in men. Three guesses who she put on our desktop... the little freak.
Everyone have a beautiful day wherever you happen to be!

Pretty cool lineup, too bad we don´t have gigs like that here in Syberia...

The best frontman I know of is Trey Anastasio; even if he isnt frontin Phish. I understand when people say we are missing out on the music scene. Then again I remember how accessible, people like Trey, Medeski Martin and Wood, Turntables on the Hudson and the list goes on. And on And on. Its everywhere.....the music is everywhere. Rantz, next paycheck Ill look for the book. Im finishing up the Andy Warhol diarys now. Read like eight hundred pages plus a week, when I can. Whats an IP anyway? All I know is never wish a habit on anyone! If someone could email me to explain the Castro guy situation, he gives me a ghostly image of fear! Dont waste space here on this page! Anyone check out the Nirvana Box set? Not one person responded an opinion about Dave collaborating with Courtney Love, as she stated she would like to do. Im interested in everyones art and music from this site. I write music and would be glad to share, collaborate. Reeses peaces.
Boots in New Haven CT today

goood morning people!
what's the weather looking like down south for San Diego and Tijuana? That's where I'm headed tomorrow.
Last night I went to church as today is Christmas according to the old calendar that the eastern orthodox christians (russians, serbs, greeks) go by. Merry Christmas to anyone that might be celebrating.
During the service I took a look in the service book and read this powerful prayer that really struck me, and I want to get a copy of it somehow.
I'm totally excited about the Camp Freddy show Jan 27th I just know the line up is going to be just as killer, if not more so, than the Vegas one a few days ago! Good chance my sister's coming to the show, too!
Happy Friday

I was a big Phish guy for a while, until there i was mid show #15 or so and the tailgating was wearing off and Trey starts ripping into another solo. There it was, my moment of clarity when I relaized it all sounded the same. I couldnt really sense any feeling or anything behind it....just empty open notes. Still a great live band and loved seeing them, but I really can't think of Trey as a great frontman having seen him with Phish and solo.
Medeski Martin Wood is such a great band...if you guys havent checked them out, I highly recommend.

It has been raining none stop since this morning and according to the surf report/the weather reports this storm front in going to continue until next Tuesday. Have a safe trip!
