EVH Style

Davenavarropg405_1This is the EVH guitar I used for a couple of shows a few years back. I just had to.

1. Anna Sui was mentioned a few times in this thread......Do you still keep in touch with her? Is she still designing for you? Or were the leather lace-up pants you wore in her show, not hers.

I actually ran into her In New York a few months back. Those pants were hers, but she let me keep them. She rules!

2. DAVE - Billy m went over his preparation for 2mrw's show on doheny site, what are the activities you undergo leading upto to a show such as thursdays?

We rehearse of course, but that's about it. Reminds me of an old phrase that I have later originated. "Fail to prepare, prepare to fail." As for tomorrow's show, we just show up and bring it.

3. How did you beat this horrible dark monster?

In all honesty and sincerity, I let God into my life. Let Him run the show for a while. Easier than it sounds, in fact, running things on my own was obviously not working and when I turned it over, it got WAY easier.

4. Dave-does TPC have a record deal, with who and when can we expect the album to be released.

That is a tough one to answer. I am tied to Capitol but the band isn't. We would love to stay there but we really haven't had the "meeting" about it yet. If they want us, great! If not, we will do this on our own.

5. Dave what you think about Zakk Wylde??

Zakk is an unreal guitar player. I once sat in on an Ozzy rehearsal. That guy plays so loud. Even when he stops to tune, he was at full blast.

6. Where did you find your stylist? IS there some sort of company that has all the good stylists on a list, and then you celebs can pick and choose?

No, I hired her based on word of mouth. She is more like a member of our extended family than anything. A friend who likes to shop. I hate shopping.

7. Think I remember reading that OHM was recorded in Hawaii...where were you guys for that one?

The Big Island of Hawaii, Kona coast.

8. Dave, I know you've said you're not into sports but we're you ever into surfing?

No, I'm not much of a surfer. I have been, but I really never took to it.

9. Was Perkins ever an addict? Or Eric Avery?

Perk never had a problem and Avery hasn't touched the stuff in something like 15 years.

10. I really like the cross you have tatted on your forarm and i was wondering if you would mind if i copied your design...

Be my guest, man.

See some of you up in da club, tomorrow...

Hey everyone,
Does anyone want a MACY*S coupon? just askin'.

Dave,
I wish I could be at your show. Hopefully you will visit us again in NYC soon.
Have you heard about KORN's business plan. They are going to try to record, manufacture, distribute and market their albums by themselves. They want no record label involvement.
¿Do you think that it is possible to do?
¿Would record stores by from them and possibly damage their (the stores) relationship with the record companies?
¿Would KORN make more money this way or lose more?
I hope that it works out for them because I like their music.

Later,
Mike from NYC

Good morning. I can't wait for the show tomorrow. I bought ear plugs because I lost my hearing for 2 days after the Dragonfly. Look forward to seeing TPC again and watching Dave and the guys play on stage. Are you guys going to wear the buttons Wendy made?

Does Dave or anyone have XM or Sirius? I was thinking about asking for it for Christmas so I can hear Dave and TPC on CFR because now I only have dial up at home, which is infuriatingly difficult to try to listen to - GRRR. I don't know if XM or Sirius will work in my car, and I'm guessing I need to get some special kind of receiver for home, maybe for the car too??

I wish I could go to the show! But, alas, Pittsburgh is too far away . . . but someday, maybe, hopefully . . .

Love to all on the site!

Always,
me

P.S. Incase you did not realize it, today is December 1st - 24 days 'til you know what . . .

Hi Dave!

Good luck tomorrow! Wish I could see you guys play by I'm across the states here in Jersey!

Just wondering...do you put up a tree for Christmas? Do you decorate it yourself or do you have someone do it for you?

Hi Dave,

Thanks for answering my question about Anna Sui, I LOVE her clothes & her personal style!

There was a photo spread on her NYC home a few years ago in some magazine, it was as interestig as her clothes. Very purply & black. Kind of Goth but more ornate than that....in short....very unique.

Hi Wendybird,

THANKS! I'll email you later.

I'm on my way out to see my dermatologist, I'm trying to keep my skin 'young & supple'....lol.....without using Botox or any of that other scary crap!

take care,

Hey All,

Wish I could go to the show Dave! I will as always be with you all in spirit :)

Check this out:

Pink Floyd School Kids Seeking Royalties

They may not have needed "no education," but they still deserve to be paid.

That's the feeling of a Scotland-based royalties agent who filed a legal claim on behalf of the schoolchildren who took part in singing the chorus of Pink Floyd's chart-topping 1979 single, "Another Brick In the Wall, Pt. 2."

Peter Rowan, of Edinburgh's RBL Music, is looking to secure as much as $11,650 for the 23 students of Islington Green School, more than 25 years after they recorded their vocals, according to the European wire service Agence France-Presse. Rowan filed his first claim last week, on behalf of former student Peter Thorpe, though he said he hopes to add other students to the claim.

I can't believe they are doing this after all this time!!! Some one obviously smells money!

Good Morning Dave and Family!

Jezz...the card is in the mail!

Family...I have a dilemma and could use some objective feedback. My Cousin, whom I love dearly, has called this morning and asked to borrow $1000.00...seems she had some sort of mix-up with her checking account and can't pay her rent.

A little background: She is in her mid 40's, married with 3 children. She has been in dire financial straits for most of her life...she and her Husband just can't seem to live within their means. She has never asked me for money before but, she has borrowed often and extensively from other family members... knowing her track record, I know this would be a gift, not a loan, because they are never far enough ahead to pay anyone back.

I know that giving her the money will only be a band-aid and will not fix her problem. I know I will just be enabling this irresponsible behavior...but part of me feels like such a heel if I say no. I am so blessed, have so much and, frankly, would not miss the money. My instinct is to say no but, it's Christmas and she has a family and part of me feels like I would be this greedy asshole if I say no.

Would any of you care to tell me what you would do, if you were me?

Yeah Dec 01.. 16 days till someone arrives in Toronto for the return leg of a "home and home" visit.

I heard a rumor about some swag.. in particular, t-shirts being sold (or whatever) at a recent TPC show? Where are the Panic Agent's t's ? I'm not making a huge deal, but if there is some swag available, shouldn't the agents be getting something ?

Just wondering, of course.

Peace and Respect to DAVE and all the 6767 family

My dear sweet Cori,
it seems you have already answered the question. You know it would not be a loan, but a gift. You believe you can spare it. You know you are enabling her, but, at the same time, you are helping her children, who seem like innocent victims of their parents' financial irresponsibility.

Let me tell you a quick little story..I was a single mom, my son's second Christmas, living paycheck to paycheck. One night, as I was walking to my car after work, I noticed a young woman and her three kids in the parking lot, holding a sign asking for food. I gave her what was in my purse, twenty dollars my mom had given me to buy something for Mike. I felt really good....Then, about 20 minutes later, after I picked my child up from daycare, I remembered I had left something in my locker, I returned to work, pulled into driveway in time to see young women and three kids get into expensive looking automobile and drive off...
I felt used, and pretty angry, but I remembered something from my favorite book..something about if you give with your heart, it doesn't really matter what happens to the gift itself, or how it's used, it matters what spirit it was given in...Does that make sense?

Anyway, hey Crecencia, I can not go tomorrow, I have missed too many classes already, and they are holding my diploma over my head, grrr....I will miss you, hey, if you aren't doing anything after, head on the 10 east, and give me a call when you get to Redlands!!

jezebel(dammit!!!)

Cori,

I wouldn't give her the money. I know it sounds cruel but if she gets the money from you this time, she might expect it in the future. I speak from experience.
I am sorry...

McSwain~

those are some really lovely pieces you've got there. Nice to see the variety of approaches, love the coppertop one. Makes me think of Andy Warhol's 'copper oxidization' paintings, in which he used sheets of copper and various bodily fluids to get really unique chemical patinas.

Cori

It's an awkward position to be in,knowing you may be able to keep a roof over your cousin and her family, but knowing that ultimately you'd be helping her out of a hole she has dug for herself,a hole she might find herself back in later.
It's a little unfair for her to ask considering it's nobody elses fault but her own.I don't mean to sound mean.
From my experience, when you give someone this kind of help, that person will keep on asking for help when they find themselves in trouble again.
She really ought to take a long look at how much money she spends could have been put to better use,or saved.

Maybe get some financial advise. This will be better help in the long run.A short term solution doesn't help an on going problem.

A hungry person needs to learn to fish for themselves,
there won't always be a person around to catch fish for them.

It's not very Christmas spirited i know, but you don't really want to be the one she turns to every time she needs money.

Cori:
I have been in that situation, and I always give them the money but then i find that they spend the money in idiot things, what now I do is give things to his childrens, clothes, toys, food. And that works really good with us.
hope you can find the right thing to do.
take care..

Hi Cori,

There are, of course, two schools of thought here....you feel it's Christmas & you want to be benevolent. You state you can afford it & you want too give her the money, that's fine if you truly feel it's a gift.

But the other side of this situation is the fact that your cousin & her family seem to have been "in dire financial straits for most of her life...she and her Husband just can't seem to live within their means".

Do you feel you have to 'support' someone who never seems to right their wrongs?

People such as this always seem to have some sort of financial problem, but them probably spend money on frivolous things they don't really need or spend $7.00 on a pack of cigerettes (I don't smoke but I know cigs are expensive now) or they never look for sales, even though they are financially strapped.

I am the 'Queen of Sample Sales', outlet & discount shopping. I worked at a buying office many years ago, I know the real prices of most items. The mark-ups are unreal. I have to support myself, so I am always looking for bargains, if people think I'm cheap that's their problem, I am thrifty. If I save on some items, I can splurge on others.

Sorry to ramble.....People such as your cousin know there will always be some sort of safety net there for them. They will never try to do things for themselves, because YOU (or others) are ALWAYS there.

Why should you have to support a lifestyle which she obviously can't do herself? I am sure every family has one or two relatives such as your cousin, but after a while I would think they are are just taking advantage of you & the rest of your family. You just have to stop giving to these people, I know that sounds very cold, but it's the reality of the situation.

To me, it's the same situation as a group of friends going to a very expensive restaurant, the bill comes & there's always a person who just so happened to forget their wallet at home. It's usually the same person doing the wallet thing! It's not fair to everyone else to have to foot their bill.

Many people have fallen on hard times over the course of their lives, families & friends usually help, but when it becomes a constant, I feel these people are just clearly taking advantage of you. People like this usually prey on people they know will feel sorry for them.

If you keep on enabling her, she will keep doing it again & again...as she obviously has.

A woman in her 40s, who can't balance a checking account & knows she has to pay her rent monthly (rents & mortgages are usually monthly) probably has many other problems beyond just keeping her finances in order.

The best advice you can give your cousin & her husband, is to get into some sort of counseling for their money problems, because their situation will probably only get worse. I worked with a women who was in very bad financial debt even though she made a great salary, she was out of control with spending. Her husband was just as bad. I spoke to her a few months ago, now they are in even deeper debt!

take care,
itanja

Hi All!

I have 2 separate comments -- one for Cori, and one for Dave. (And of course for everyone's reading enjoyment. LOL)

CORI - I want to say that you should buy your cousin a clue. But I know that's mean, so I won't say it. ;) (Hey -- maybe you can buy her the GAME "Clue", and maybe she'll get the hint. LOL)

But seriously... Itanja makes VERY good points, as do several other folks. I completely agree with the "teach a man to fish" analogy. Your cousin's never going to get out of the hole she's in by mooching off of (and using) her family. She's a grown woman, and needs to face reality. We all have our crosses to bear. She's not the only one who ever had money trouble.

With that said, if you really want to lend her the money, make certain that she pays you back. Draw up a contract if you must. Tell her that she can pay you back gradually in small increments if she has to.

Mind you, I'm all for charity, benevolence, and the spirit of giving. But I personally prefer giving to people who sincerely need and APPRECIATE what they're getting, rather than those who think that the world owes them something.

Oh... and if you DO have money to spare, you can always send some to the Denise Foundation! ;)

All the best,
-Denise

Posted by: Denise at December 1, 2004 03:05 PM

The $$ questions are always tough ones. I was thinking if you really want to help her, but aren't sure she'll use the money for what she says, maybe you can pay her rent directly to the landlord. Or, if you don't want to give her the full amount, maybe you can get a gift certificate for groceries, or some other essentials, that way you KNOW exactly what the money is going for.

I imagine it's difficult to say no, and it sounds like she came to you this time, because she's gone through other family already! I'm thinking that you're worried that if you give her the money, it's like saying that how she's going about things is ok, when it obviously isn't. The thing about that is, even if you DON'T give her the money, it's doubtful that she'll learn that lesson. So if you can really do it, and want to, there's probably no real harm in doing so, you'll just know your helping out the kids more than anything.

Ugh. I don't envy you on that one!!! Good Luck!

Posted by: Lori_in_PA at December 1, 2004 03:08 PM

Sidenote... I, too, enjoy and missed the "10 questions" thing. I posted a question the other day, but it must've gotten buried... I will re-post in a second...

Posted by: Denise at December 1, 2004 03:09 PM

Lori in PA just brought up a great point - about the kids.

If you want to give her something for Christmas (other than "Clue", LOL) you can see what her kids want, and buy gifts for them. And then LEND her the money.

Posted by: Denise at December 1, 2004 03:11 PM

Wow...I really can't thank you all enough for your wise thoughts. I have been just sick about this all day...very torn about doing what is right and best for all concerned.

I have already spent hundreds of dollars on Christmas gifts for my Cousin's family...I am usually the "staple" of their Bdays and Christmas...I buy the bulk of the kids' gifts because my Cousin can never afford much.

I was leaning toward just giving the money, in the spirit of the season, but then found out that the shortage of funds was not due to a little "mix up" in the checking account. My Cousin and her Husband bounced their rent check last month...partially repayed their landlord in cash but had not yet paid it all or gotten the bounced check back, then moved out with no notice, leaving the landlord with a vacant house...the landlord wisely ran their check through again and it cleared...which my Cousin did not expect him to do, so she then bounced many, many other checks.

Once I asked her a bit more about what happened and found out how shabbily she treated her landlord, I told her I was really sorry that I could not help her out. She said they intended to pay the landlord when they can, just had not planned on paying him until after the holidays.

What a mess! I would gladly help someone who truly had an unexpected emergency but, here they are trying to stiff that poor landlord at Christmas...who knows, he may have children too and bills to pay...and I just can't condone that and won't be any part of making that OK.

She was bawling her eyes out but said she understood and respected me for saying no. Damn...I hate days like this! :(

Now, onto DAVE.

DAVE - I was very moved by your response today re: the "horrible dark monster".

We all have "monsters". For me, I am a complete control freak, which is sometimes empowering, but often exhausting. I am always torn between trying to be in total control of every aspect my life or just letting God take over. I'm trying to do the latter a bit more, because it definitely make life MUCH easier. Hearing this kind of advice from someone like you makes me appreciate this site more than you can imagine. We all truly value your opinions and insights.

?QUESTION TIME?

Dave, how do you define "success"?

Posted by: Denise at December 1, 2004 03:27 PM

Oops... meant to say "makes" instead of "make".

And I also meant to say THANKS to Dave.

Sorry.

Cori, why did I know that about you already? That you were the one that helps her kids out. I love you and your kind, generous, thoughtful nature...and I want you to know that this love for you comes from a woman in her 40s that can not balance her checking account and has a hard time paying her bills....and yes, that is the LEAST of my problems, itanja, I love you too!! You know me!! I don't know, I used to balance everything to the penny, it's only been in the last year that I just find it difficult to keep all my pieces together.. I miss my mommy..

A belated happy anniversary to you and Carmen. I watched the finale of Manhunt last night and my pick guy won, Jon. Carmen said she knew he would win and that he was so rock n roll. =)
She seems so sweet and it's great to see such a nice couple. You don't deserve anything less. And god the both of you are sexy hot!
I admire you for staying so grounded and rocking at the same time.

Hi Dave and everyone
Great post today, Nice to see all that feedback.
Just a question on some old stuff. I just got a hold of Gift and I've had a copy of a Janes show recorded on Italian TV from back in '90 or '91. Is there any chance of the old vid's (Soul Kiss, Gift, Bootlegs :) ) Or any of your solo shows, CF, TPC, etc. being released on DVD. Thanks!
Have a great night all!

I saw the movie SIDEWAYS this weekend and absolutely loved it. It is not for everyone because the humor is very dry. I loved the wine references and it dealt with the issue of infidelity. I give SIDEWAYS 3.5 stars out of 4.

Hi jezebel.

Hey, even if you can't balance your check book....you certainly come across as a responsible & caring person. You have to pay off school loans etc...so you have REAL reasons to not balance that checkbook! lol

The more we are hearing about Cori's cousin, she & her husband sound like losers & scam artsits. And scamming your own family is pretty damn low. Using people because they are kind is also low. After hearing what she did to her landlord, I wouldn't give that woman a dime.

My dad & uncles had to deal with a loser brother-in-law for many years. This man was married to my aunt for 50 years, YES, 50 years! My dad & the brothers were ALWAYS helping my aunt out because her husband could never keep a job.

This guy even wrote to my wealthy uncle in California (he's an accountant-to-the-stars) begging him for money. My California uncle sent him a check for a couple of thousand dollars, of course he never saw it again.

So I KNOW how all that stuff goes. We all loved my aunt, the family did it for her, not for him. Thankfully, they never had children.

Take care,
itanja

Working on that Xmas card...you might get a few~~!!

Cori...i know your situation and how hard it is to be caught between a rock and a hard place like that. my opinion is that money between people only complicates things. i'm glad with your decision, as i think it was completely the right one...this person has to learn that the world isn't there to take of her...it's for her to learn to take care of herself. you are a very nice, caring, GENEROUS person...and you're helping her in the right way by being generous with her kids.

itanja is right...these people sound like scam artists, bouncing around from person to person looking for money to "borrow" and never pay back. and like itanja, we have quite a few of those in my family, and the best thing is to cut them off...although they will always find an alternate source. i think you made the right decision, so please don't agonize over it...and remember this piece of advice from mr. willy shakespeare himself:

"Neither a borrower nor lender be"...it'll keep you sane...money only complicates things.

Jezz...honey I don't balance my checkbook either and I worked as a full-charge bookkeeper for 15 years! LOL....You know the old saying...the painter's house never gets painted and the plumber's house has leaky faucets!

I've just come from taking poinsettias (sp?) and little Christmas trees to my Mom's grave and visiting my Grandma in "the home"...I feel much better.

Believe it or not peeps, even though my Cousin is apparently a deadbeat...she has a good heart, deep down. Her whole life has been very difficult, she grew up living with horrors I can't imagine and things never got easier for her. I'm not sure how I would have turned out, had I grown up in her shoes.

Peace to all of you and thanks, as always, for being such awesome, caring people.

Dave...you really attract some very special souls to your blog...which is a testament to what a very special person you are.

Hey you guys, what the hell happened to Luiz and WhitePony? Anyone know?

Cori, good call! I think there's peace in knowing you did the right thing, no matter how hard it is. I live by my gut feeling for that reason alone. And I guess since I don't believe in God, that's pretty much all I have to go on.

Steve, glad to hear Sarah has a trump card up her sleeve. There's really no other way to win.

All you LA dwellers have fun tomorrow night! Btw, I think we should lose some of the agency artwork and add some pics in its place. What do you guys think? I've seen some pics others have posted, but I have no idea who was who in them. Anyway, just an idea.

Dave!

"I've got my pen-cil. Gimme somethin' to write on man!!!"

1984 is one of my all-time favorites. In fact, it was my first experience hearing rock. (This will show my age) when I was 6 or 7, I was at my friend's house who was a few years older. He had just gotten the album and was playing it in his room while we played video games on his Commodore 64.

EVH rocks. I'm kicking myself for not checking them out when they came through here a few weeks ago.

Hope everyone has a BLAST at the gig tomorrow!

And the 'camera people'.....you know who you are...I want to see some MORE great photos!

Posted by: itanja at December 1, 2004 08:28 PM

Cori, I've been on both sides of that, and you did the right thing. And in case you doubt it, I know how kind and generous you are. Thanks again

AJ Coon, you didnt miss anything. VH came here a few months back. A group of us went. EVH was so trashed he could hardly play. And he kept telling the crowd to "F*ck off, I don't give a Sh*t." I have so much respect and admiration for what he gave us, it was heart wrenching to see him like that. Mabey it was a bad night, everybody has one.

Diana- fellow BLS lover right here. Zakk Wylde is one of my favorites.

Seriously, thanks for your kind words. I try my best... but I still have much to learn.

And you are ABSOLUTELY worthy! :)

Well, I was at Lolla in 91, Phillips in 01, Lolla in 03, Fox in Dec 03, and I'll be there tomorrow night!
Look for me, I'll be the one with a black shirt on. And black pants. And black shoes. With a black belt. And a black leather vest. Hey, it's only rock and roll, but, I like it:)

Dave:
WHO IS FLOOD? I see his name as producer all the time for NIN, U2, Depeche Mode etc. Did you ever work w/him, or plan to? Who is producing the new TPC album? You guys, Flood, or Rick Rubin? :)

Have a great show tonight, WISH I COULD GO! Come to the East Coast!!

Posted by: Sue at December 2, 2004 05:21 AM

Oh, anyone see VH1 (Inside)Out w/VR last night? It’s on again at 3:30pm today (eastern) for anyone who is home. It was really good, had a little clip of Hungry as well as APC/Tool songs in the background. And Matt had his Camp Freddy trucker hat on a lot. Feel bad for Scott, he hates the media and there he is all over the show with the legal/addiction problems he had during the last couple of years. They could’ve made it longer, they kind of rushed through the past 6-8 months when so much happened. But the last live clips were from the Sept 2 show in London, they showed JIMMY PAGE hanging before the show! Not too bad when Pagey comes to watch YOU! Catch it if you can…

How do I post a question to Dave?

I want to ask him if he still keeps in touch with any of the Fishbone guys - peers, friends & former collaborators with Janes Addiction.

Posted by: Paul Sophocli at December 2, 2004 06:50 AM

Just a quick drop by. First of all, thank you Dave for answering my question! Gives me the chills and makes my day every time!

And second, I just want to wish you all an amazing experience tonight. I better go now before my jealousy of not being able to participate overtakes me to the path of bitterness...

Peas 'n' luv!

pfft, just home from shopping, it feels great to spend money on presents. bought a cd for my dad, he wanted some old rockrecords so i went through the Zappa collection in the store..and what did i find? Zappa and Beefheart on one cd! hurray!
it's called Zappa/Beefheart/Mothers Bongo Fury. it great. and i had a nice talk with a girl from the store about the record..a very friendly and enthousiastic girl.
okay, i'm off to learn for a german-test tomorrow..i suck at german. love berlin and the country, but hate the language..too bad
have a great nite everyone who's going!!!

Paul: Just type your question as you have done in your message and it might get used. Saw Fishbone last year playing a tiny club, even buying their own drinks beforehand. One of the best gigs I've even seen, tight does not come close to describing them live! Was looking forwrad to their upcoming DVD, but apparently there's been a falling out between the band and the DVD producers (their 'friend'!) So the official band stance on the disc seems to be 'f**k it, don't buy it'... shame.

Emma: Bongo Fury is a brilliant album, pretty listenable too! Do think Zappa is a genius but you have to be careful when buying his stuff!! :) Freak Out rocks too and The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life is amazing. Saw Jimmy Carl Black from the Mothers last year, sounds like he's chilling in Germany, nice bloke.,, would probably help you with your test.

That's cool. Thanks for sharing the EVH guitar picture.
But the guts don't look to be all mangled like his on the cover of Musician magazine (Sept 82) ;)

I went to my first VH show as a freshman in high school on the Diver Down tour, at the Cow Palace, with Alex Skolnik. My bro drove us. Alex went on to play guitar in Testament. He's a good guy.

Thanks again for sharing the pic.

Have a nice time tonight.

I'm at the gig in spirit *snorts* that guitar in the picture is to die for... ha, I'm slightly tempted to paint my own guitar now (;

just a thought... it's sort of ironic, and very much like me... only recently have I started getting into Jane's, and only recently, have Jane's split up. What do you think of the idea that TPC as the Jane's for the people that missed out on it?

hey stevo, i got Freak Out as well, love it! i also have Shiny Beast of Captain beefheart and the magicband..but it took me a while before i could really listen to it. it was so completly different from the music i already had. but now i can enjoy that album as well. the same goes for my zappa apostrophe (') album. i got (') because i had to buy a record (my addiction, buying cds) so i picked this one. i do like it now, but it took me some time. it's not a quiet-soft-backgroung-icanignorethis-sound.

i can do the german-test a second time if i don't get a good mark this time, so no stress..which means i haven't studied at all today...
