ANTM/10

Davenavarro1620ANTM (Another reality show in the States.): I was a littile shocked that Eva won. Oh well, I was pulling for Amanda. Here is me with last year's winner, Yoanna, at a fashion show for Lord's.

1. Ha, wait a minute, did you just mention the stuff about taking heat for collaborating with Christina, so you could show off that favorable picture??

Definitely!

2.I think that the victims' family and friends do get some sort of gratification or some feeling of justice when the killer is executed. Dave when your mother's killer is executed, will you feel this way?

I honestly don't think so. I just feel like the punishment will fit the crime. Nothing gratifying to me about killing on any level.

3. Any chance at Axl Rose playing a Camp Freddy Show. With Matt in the band that would really rock!

There is always a standing invitation out to Axl!

4. To those who have an issue with Dave making what was probably a ridiculous amount of cash by playing while a hot latina chick writhes around him - GET OVER IT.

Haha! Thank you, but whenever I do one of those "guest" appearances, it's just for fun and for free, no cash... but the hot writhing latina didn't hurt the decision process. In fact, the choice was quite easy. Plus, that girl DOES have skills.

5. Who are your picks for best drummer (both classic and modern)?

Hard one. Classic: Bonham and Moon. Modern: Smith, Grohl and PERKINS!

6. I was wondering what's your opinion on the "gateway theory" that holds that marijuana use leads to doing other drugs?

Well, I believe in the predisposition to addiction. Some have it and some do not. The gateway theory is more times than not, true for those who have the "addict gene", but I also have plenty of stoner friends who aren't addicts and therefore have never moved on to harder stuff.

7. Have RHCP gone pop. Or has pop gone alternative?

I think those guys have been sticking to who they are for so long, that they could really never do any wrong. Even their so called "pop" material is uniquely their own sound.

8. Given that you've found your own sense of spirituality, would you agree with Einstein?

"When you examine the lives of the most influential people who have ever walked among us, you discover one thread that winds through them all. They have been aligned first with their spiritual nature and only then with their physical selves."

I don't know. I wouldn't disagree. I can't speak for others but I'm sure he was correct more often than incorrect. Granted, this statement has nothing to do with math so I tend to back it.

9. If I hear another person say how terrible it was that you replaced John Fru in the Chilis I will actually cry... can't you sort them out Dave, go rough them up or something?

They are entitled. I will say this though. They never seem to want to admit that at the time, John left the band to get his life together and that the other guys hired me. All I did was say "yes" to the offer of playing with some of my favorite musicians and friends. I'm happy that John is back, and I am happy I could be a part of keeping the band moving forward until he was able to re-claim his position. For that, I am truly proud of my time with RHCP.

10. A lot of holiday plans questions:

We are going to hang with the family for Christmas then go on a long awaited vacation/honeymoon, just Carm and I.

I'm off to go finish up the TPC Christmas gift. Look for it December 25th!

Peace my Idren,

DMN-TPC

P.S. Although I have been very busy, I have had a chance to look into that Highway 395 problem!

Congratulations on the new home Dana!!!

When we were looking for Apartments for my Dad earlier this year, I found the "perfect one"...beautiful setting, near my house and my Sisters'....all the pre-requisites we had discussed...then the unit did not become available when expected and we ended up finding something even better for my Dad. I subsequently found out that the complex with the aforementioned "perfect one" is the complex where Amber Frey lives and has been inundated with press crawling all over always trying to get a statement!

I can just imagine what may have happened if my quiet, peace loving Dad had ended up there! lol Just goes to show, things really do work out the way they're supposed to!

Man,i really wish i had phrased that whole sentence now

"Have RHCP gone pop,or has pop gone alternative"

My piont was the second part of that sentence,I certainly don't think RHCP are pop,or that they've "sold out"

My piont was that since alternative music became music of mass appeal, that record companies sign up anyone with a similar style or look to the current trend to make money, therefore the popular music charts have more alternative bands in them, also "pop" bands catch onto this to and use this element in their music=has pop gone alternative.

I was really referring to an opinion that DAVE gEFOW made that he thought RHCP were now 100% pop.

I am so pumped to see what TPC has in store for X-mas! very cool Dave. But anyway, you nailed it right on the head (no pun intended) with the question about the greatest drummers. The 5 you mentioned (and also D. Carrey of Tool and Taylor Hawkins) are my fave drummers as well.

Quick question:
1. Rumor has it, Reznor asked you to guest on the new NIN album... if that is true, is it gonna go down? (I could die a happy man knowing you and Dave Grohl were on the same album/song)

have a good one everyone Trent O.

Dave,

Thanx for answering my question regarding the death penalty!
Do you listen to Bob Marley at all?

Glad to see that you are putting your energies in helping the California traffic problem.

PS- Does anyone have a favorite wine? I prefer anything from PASO ROBLES or SUTTER PLACE. They make great wine. If you like wine then you must see SIDEWAYS.

Captain? Damn, time flies, I can remember when you were just a Seargent.

Captain Navarro! Sounds like a superhero. Hey, it is!
:)

Rantz, make up one of those Superman style shirts with the letter "N" in the middle and juxtapose a pic of Dave's head on the body, put it on the art page, that'd rule!

O Captain! My Captain! hehehe!

Thanks for making me smile, Dave!

Rantz - Your suggestion of Le Immortel was absolutely right on. It is PERFECT. Thank you so much. I loved your post about the Christmas carols (a minor key girl myself). Last week I attended a funeral for a beloved co-worker and after the service, still in the church, I said to myself "Fuck! Pull it together!" My boss looked at me, paused, and said, "Well, that was his favorite word..." Glad to report that this church did not spontaneously combust (nor did I) -- I am working Christmas Eve, though...coincidence?

Trent - I am with you on the Daves - Grohl and Navarro -I too would die happy! I have a husband, but two secret
boyfriends. We were talking one night about all the actresses going out with rock stars, so I had to ask who he thought I would go out with if I were a famous actress. My secret boyfriend is Dave Grohl, chosen by my husband (I just worry that he's going to choke on that gum when he's singing!). My SUPER secret boyfriend is, of course, our gracious host, Dave. Grohl had to be first because he knows how passionate I am about all things Navarro (as we all are)! A bit too much for him, I guess.

As for crappy Christmas songs -- Madonna should have left Santa Baby ALONE! She is many things, but Eartha Kitt she is NOT!

hey dave...hello from NYC! maybe you can help me with some of your sage-like advice...i'm about your age & i've been playing guitar for awhile...i've got songs that i'm in the process of recording. one of my best friends is a powerhouse drummer that everyone would know (from a heavy drop "d" band) and he continually makes excuses as to why he won't show up & help me out in the studio. by day, i do art direction/graphic design & i've been pretty successful @ it. but, i've always wanted to play & it kills me that "my boy" won't show up for me...i'm pretty offended as i take his reluctance for a lack of respect. wouldn't you help a friend who wasn't a pro but a good bro, realize his musical dreams? should i take offense to it? or should i just go "y'know he's got gold records & i'm putting this out myself so he has no reason to respect me..." (which i don't believe). what i've always loved about LA was the musical commraderie that you guys have out there. here it's soooo very ugly & mercenary...i mean this guy is my friend..i can't believe he won't help me...as a person who is a pro, what do you think i should do? should i call him out & be like "look mofo..." or do what i've been doing which is being frustrated trying to find a reliable, (though generally not as good),drummer in NY who won't charge me two arms & two legs?

By the looks of that picture Yoanna certainly has come a long way from winning last year. I was also pulling for Amanda, she seemed so sweet and appreciative of every little deatail in life. This community is so interesting, & I often find myself chatting about the discussions mentioned here. I just came back from eating at Red Lobster with my Dad, & I was mentioning all that had been going on here (with the exception of the Christina thing..hehe). Anyone else here taking these discussions out into the offline world? Have a great night everyone :)

AeroGem...I am always sharing the interesting little tidbits I learn here with those around me...so many interesting people here with so many diverse, insightful and often comical views on things...you bet it carries over into my offline world!

Brain...I know nothing about the music business but the thought occurs to me...could your friend possibly be contractually prohibited from helping you out? I have heard of musicians wanting to collaborate but being told they can't because their record labels won't allow it...just a thought...although, if that were the case, you'd think he would have just said so.

Captain Navarro. I like the sound of that; my new favorite pleasantly naughty comic book hero. I think I’ll doodle a little image to go with that.

He’s a rockstar at night, fights for highway safety in the day, makes sweet love to his wife when she says yes, has a radio show on Saturdays, plays poker with friends, and is torn between porn, the net and TeVo all other days.

Algermom:
Glad that worked for you. Almost unheard of in the states, it is a kick ass piece of work for sure. Bilal has been talking about making the movie version of the graphic novels for 20 years, glad to see it finally happened!

Brain:
Being friends with a few musicians, I wouldn't take offense or as a personal slight. As noted, there be contractual obligations that preclude it. There may be scheduling conflicts (life as a pro musician is rather hectic at times, a level of hectic most of us will never encounter.) There may be a 'focus' issue, with him not wanting to take away from his own music... there's a ton of possibilities. I wouldn't get offended. You made the offer and asked multiple times. Keep working on your stuff and either he'll help, or (if you kick ass) he'll be saying "shit man, I wish I would have worked on that!"

Lyn: Hmmm superhero Dave... (mind starts pondering)

Brain,

It's great that you have access to a "pro" drummer. However as a musician I would suggest that you don't put all of your eggs in one basket. If you are looking for guidance, talk to your engineer. He is an encyclopedia of info and ideas. If you need a drummer, talk to the lads in your studio. They surely know a few people with major league chops. If you are looking to tap into your friends resources in the biz. You may have to thicken your skin a bit. That is a tough thing to have happen friends or not.
Most of all, if they are not available, use the time to tweak things a bit in the manner you like. Most folks are always trying to improve regardless of what point they are it.
Stick with it and don't give up. Your bud may come around.

Cheers,

Mike C.

Brian, you would be amazed at the talent that is floating around/walking the streets of NY as I write this. Word of mouth is always good, I agree with Mike's post about asking the engineer, maybe you will eventually link up with someone you connect with? There are some artist's who wrote entire albums without a drummer, for instance Prince wrote a ton of stuff without a drummer, but a simple machine called the "Linn Drum" which he swore by. Maybe not your thing, but I hope your getting the idea here. You might be able to get what you want out of some recording software as well? Just some suggestions. As per your drummer who is a flaking out, I'm not a rcok star but if it isn't working out.......move on. Why not try the drums out yourself? Best wishes on that.

I have a few questions of my own, but I'll wait for a better time to ask them. Gotta go get ready to go out in celebration of a friend's b-day.

Cori,

Just wanted to thank you for challenging us to do a good deed in our community. While I was reading I kept thinking to myself I should do what I can. Low and behold...later in the afternoon I get in the mail an unexpected refund from my doctor for $657.00 for a surgery I had had this past year! I thought I owed him because it took an hour and twenty minutes more than had been expected. As soon as I got it, I made out a check of $100 in memory of my mom who also passed away while in hospice. It felt good to give :) So thanks, cause your post prompted me to do something worthwile this Christmas. I'm sure it won't be the last on my part.

P.S. Have a great holiday/honeymoon Dave & Carmen!!!

I've got to catch up on 2 days worth of posts, so here goes:

Abby, I tried what you said and I never had the option that you said to click on. Don't know why but it didn't work for me. Thanks for trying though!

(((((Jez))))) ... there, I've just given you a hug! :)

Tex: NESTOR!!! YES! I love that movie, so much that I bought it on DVD a few years ago so my daughter will be sure to see it when she's old enough to enjoy it. Every year when that came on it was a big deal in my house when I was a little girl because I loved it so much.

Rain: I'm sure that felt terrible for you to not receive a gift and your sister did. We have a secret santa in school, where we make a list of the kids who are in need, automatically add ALL their siblings, and then the teachers/staff volunteer to buy for a child. I took on 7 kids this year. 6 of them are all brothers and sisters ages 1-16 and only one of them is actually a student at the school. I've bought for this family for 4 years now. The last child I'm buying for was one on the list but no one picked her ,so I took her too. Hopefully, their Chirstmas will be a little bit brighter this year. One of the greatest feelings is helping someone else to be happy, and I'm really thankful that I'm able to do this. I host a food drive every Thanksgiving at the school, and this year we fed 40 families, see: http://members.tripod.com/~tno13/photo/baskets.jpg It's one of the greatest feelings in the world.

I'm thrilled to have made Dave chuckle and to have illicited a response to my post. Good times! This is fun. Thanks for taking the time to be so interactive with us, Dave...

The virus thing: Certain worms will take email address from which you've received email or to which you've sent email and use those email addresses when sending you spam. They aren't really 'from' that address, as you'll see if you investigate the IP. Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition (and I think 2002+) tags these with a [VIRUS] tag and sends them with a notation provided by your email host, which one user here has mentioned has happened. This only means that something has set off Norton's sensitive radar and it thinks the mail *might* be a virus, so it blocks it. It's just doing its job. These are NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT and quite common. Just get a better spam blocker and call it a day. I hope this puts to rest any fears that certain 'camps' of fans are trying to spread viruses to others...that notion boggles me...
So I'm sitting here and I hear Richard Buckner being used on an ad immediately followed by Nick Drake being used on another ad. Am I the only one that still prickles a little when you hear an artist on a television ad? Dave, I'd love your opinion on this for what I hope are obvious reasons. I'm almost at the point where I feel it's immature to feel ANYTHING in reaction to an artist making their living however they want, but apparently I'm not quite there yet. I'd love to be put in my place with an explanation of why this sort of selling of art is acceptable and not to be derided...I know it's not the place of fans to dictate what an artist and it's not like people get into the business to NOT make money...sigh...why does this topic still bother me...control issues? Overblown sense of integrity? Why does it bother me more that the alive Buckner sold his song while a dead Drake had no choice? If it's all OK, then who cares? Why do I care? I think I've been reading too much Lester Bangs...

what I meant to say was that I was meaning in general about how a lot of people consider the RHCP pop. I was really agreeing with you.

I had an interesting bus ride home today.. there was this what seemed to be homeless guy that reeked the nastiest musk... everyone was covering their noses and spraying purfume and opening windows.
Poor guy. Made me sad for him that there's nobody to take him to a hospital or something to get cleaned up, I was seriously thinking of taking him myself.

Hi RMM,

Thanks for the virus/worm info!

Re music used in TV ads.....I was quite surprised & of course cringed the first time I heard one of my faves, Nick Drake's music, being used to sell a car...simply because I don't associate "Pink Moon" with a car....though now milllions of people who heard Drake for the first time through that ad....WILL associate Nick with a Volkswagen! Besides, "Pink Moon" isn't about driving around in a car at night.

The problem is the fact that most people associate the music in TV ads with jingles, they take on that persona, even though the music being used was clearly not created for these ads. Sitting through an evenings worth of TV shows, you'd probably hear about 10-20 different rock, pop or R'n'B songs used for TV ads.

I'm not a musician so I can't say how I'd feel about selling my music for TV commercials. Some musicians are struggling or their careers have slowed down, so they need the money.

As a fan, it's a huge turn off. As one who works in the creative & marketing firelds...it's ridiculous that highly paid ad agency 'creative' directors aren't working as hard as they should be....working to create actual JINGLES to sell their products, as they used to do many years ago! They all seem to be relying on using existing music.

Though I DO admit to enjoying hearing The Kinks "PictureBook" used in the HP ads! And The GAP ads always use the music effectively. But when every other TV ad uses existing music, it clearly pells out laziness on the part of the ad agencies.

Perhaps I hold Nick Drake's music in a higher position than other musicians I enjoy. The fact that Drake didn't have a choice in how his music is now being used, also isn't very cool. It's also upsetting that it took a TV commercial to bring attention to Drake's music.....about 30 years after his death!

take care,
itanja

If you can no longer find it on the 'Men's Health' website, perhaps it's been archived on one of the many Dave fan sites.

If ya think about it,pop music is short for popular music, which would then cover just about every music style going,
Alternative being what is not popular yet.

Thats if you don't look at the term pop/alternative as tags for styles of music.

Morning mr.dave.......family.
This may come as an aweful shock to you all but no-one really cares that much about who dave 'collabourates' with. There's dissapointment because creativly it seems like a huge leap downwards.Less of a collaboration more of a styalised celebrty cameo for the camaras. To see 12.5% of your favourite band play with musicians for the seemingly soul purpose of furthering cred as a celebrity persona rather than as an artist just kinda sucks.Especially if it doesnt even pay the bills. Not suggesting that musicians write to appease their fans because that only gives rise to shitty music. But theres nothing wrong with peaple having expectations and these expectations only exist because of how great some of your past music has been and how much it means to those who love it,and surely your proud of at least some of it?
Just seems a shame when artists who inspired you just settle and stop taking risks rather than continue to improve with age like cheese and wine and jazz musicians.
Guess you probly heard about perry playing with Flea, John F and Jack Irons.Pretty amazing huh? I will admit that I find Steve Isaacs very sexy and cute!

"Guess you probly heard about perry playing with Flea, John F and Jack Irons.Pretty amazing huh?"

Not really. Perry has ALWAYS needed other people to make his music for him. I'm 100% sure it will be amazing, and i am 100% sure that perry...as in the past...will have absolutely nothing to do with it being that way.

get a life.

Molly

I think it was Chad Smith not Jack Irons,i could be wrong.

It seems to me that you'll never be satisfied no matter what Dave does, you'll find negativity in it all.

As for not taking risks, the guys have all taken a risk in not being Jane's Addiction anymore,a sure fire money maker. They've chosen, for what ever reason,to do something new, that is a risk is it not?,so far a risk that seems to be paying off.

So far without the backing of a record label, doing it independantly, funding it themselves, that is a risk.
I would describe an album from them as highly anticipated.

I would also be eager to hear new music from Perry Farrell too,as i'm a fan of his also.
JA's success wasn't down to the talents of one person,it was because of the talents of all four,it is the same with all great bands.

I don't see the point in dissing anyones choices,if i don't like it,i don't have to listen.Simple as that.

I fucking adore John, but people who seem to deny the existance of any other guitarist really annoy me, it makes me want to slap them upside the head, and I'm not a very violent person. again, I implore you two should get together and do something, two of my absolute favourite guitarists in the universe doing a show together would be fantastic. (chances are I wouldn't be able to go and see it, but that's the joy of the internet!)

Soph

I second that motion,a Navarro/Frusciante collaboration would be an amazing prospect,on record so we could all hear it.

Aside to Molly--there is a quote, very true--"negativity only breeds more negativity" I whole-heartedly support Dave's right to play with anyone--any chance to see/hear him share his talents is a good one--and I agree with some of the others, that out of the Christina/Britney/Lindsay genre, Christina definitely does know how to sing....

Final word about Scott Peterson (from me, anyway): So he is now officially a famous murderer, who joins the ranks of such illustrious people as Lyle Menendez and Richard Ramirez--he is getting fan mail!! What the hell....?? Nothing better than saying "My boyfriend, who is in jail for killing his pregnant wife...." Talk about sick!

On to more positive things: Can't wait to see what the Christmas PC present is....and do we have to wait for Christmas to get it (insert whiny child voice *here*)?

The Bing Crosby/David Bowie collaboration came from the last Crosby Christmas special filmed before he died--apparently his daughter was a huge fan of Bowie's and that's why they had him on the show--Crosby had no idea who Bowie was....I have it on one of those "Now That's What I Call Christmas" CD's--very cool! And now it is swimming in my head--hey Dave, someday think about doing a Christmas CD--I would love to hear what you could do with "Run Rudolph Run" (Chuck Berry would be very jealous!) And I remember from "Til Death Do Us Part" Carmen recorded "Santa Baby" so there's a track you could use too (just trying to be helpful)--hey, it could be a TV special--"Navarro Family Christmas"--just send me a royalty check for the original idea.... ;-)

Have a holly jolly Christmas, y'all!

Fixing Highway 395

Dave,i didn't know you are a CHP Captain,i now have an image of you riding around dressed up like those guys from CHiPs,it is disturbingly Village People'ish.
