10 More

Dsc_1600(Me with a new Yamaha acoustic, to be debuted in January at the NAMM show.)

1. I know that you're into Forensic Science, have you ever watched any HBO's Autopsy episodes from their America Undercover series?

Of course I do!

2. Dave, do you ever lurk or read the posts at Xiola.org or ANR.com?

No. I used to. I love those sites as they keep the Jane's music and legacy alive.

3. Having a beautiful wife like Carmen I must assume that you have to deal with your jealous side (if it exists) quite often. Do you have any advice for us, pre-martial and beyond?

Well, jealousy is kind of a useless emotion in a relationship. You just got to learn how to not trip. If you realize that there will always be attractive and interesting people out there but you can choose to not act on any impulses, then you are set.

4. Quick question. How old is "TOO OLD" to be able to get in this business? Just a curious musician here.

Well, you are never too old to do what you love.

5. Dave I heard a rumor you and Carmen were expecting is this true?

No, not true.

6. Now that you're clean (and Thank God for that), do you ever look back and say "Damn, what a waste of time that was"? I mean, I know none of us can live in the past, but still, do you ever wonder, "what if?"

Never. Let's be honest. It wasn't ALL bad!

7. Question: where's Steve? He hasn't updated in over a week???

Well, he has had some kind of "issue" with his DSL service. Should be back soon.

8. Dude - aren't you supposed to keep the guitar thing a secret?

A secret from you guys? Never! Actually I don't know. Nobody ever said anything about it to me. Oh well, what can you do?

9. Have you ever read or watched the movie version of "Permanent Midnight"?

Yes. In fact, Jerry is a friend of mine and helped me deal with a lot of stuff regarding my own book. He encouraged me to just let go when I was struggling with whether or not I should put the book out.

10. Anyway, a while ago you mentioned that TPC will be playing again in February. I was wondering if you had decided on the place and if it would be a 21+ (hoping no) or closer to an all ages.

I think it'll be closer to all ages, on or around the 17th of February.

Wow, I'm the first to post!
Great photo, Dave!
Question that popped in to my head just now: out of the movies you have seen this year, anyone you think will be nominated for an Oscar? Because I'm Swede, the new movies won't reach my theatres for a while and I'm trying to figure out which movies to download for my Christmas-movienights!
Anyways, take care everyone!

Dave,

¿Do you have a favorite type of food? Italian, German, Chinese etc...
I prefer Italian because that is what I grew up on.

¿Have you ever read or watched the movie version of "Permanent Midnight"? The book, an autobiography, was written by Jerry Stahl who was a television writer for ALF and MOONLIGHTING. It deals with his heroin addiction and how it almost ruined his life. The movie starred Ben Stiller and Elizabeth Hurley. The book was much better than the movie (isn't that always the case). Your book was very similar to his. I recommend it to you and everyone else.

Not that I am complaining...maybe my kids will!

pps. I'm going now, it's just I don't know what to do with Monday nights, now that I don't have homework...

Dave, I noticed at the show at the key club you are playing a paul reed smith....how long have you been using those guitars and what did you used to play? Also i am amazed at the pumping raw sound that comes out of that guitar. Until i saw you playing a PRS that style, i was under the impression only people like Santana played them.

Posted by: marisa at December 20, 2004 07:55 PM

Dave, do you ever get a chance to head down to the beach with just the 6 stringer and Carmen ? I know myself I absolutely love spending time in nature with someone close to me, and of course, the acoustic.

I've never seen any guitar tab books for Jane's Addiction. Will there ever be, and for curiosity's sake, how come there haven't been any yet?

Jezzi,
"Dave, the Davester, Daverino, the Daveman.....remember that guy from Saturday night live...?"

You just gotta love ROB SCHNEIDER!

Actually my favorite SNL character is GOAT BOY by Jim Brewer. I saw Jim Brewer do his stand up when I was at school, Pace University, and he was hilarious. I know that GOAT BOY is not the most famous character, but I always crack a smile when I think of "him".

Hello Dave, been a fan since a friend of mine played me Nothing's Shocking when it just came out.

"Then She Did..." is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard in my life....and now, 15 years later, i am still haunted by it. Theres nothing out there quite like it.

Could you please tell me what inspired you to make that music, do you remember what emotion caused you to create that.

hi family and dave

i don't feel myself because i thought that my trip to florida was going to be cool but its been everything but that. i'm mad at my mother because i come once a year to see her and she doesn't seem to care about me leaving anytime soon. she get me so pissed because whenever a guy comes along she forgets that she has 3 kids and that things still matters to us.she's too caught up in he fucking job and doesnt dedicate as much time as she should because she's always working.its because not like i see her everyday. i can't wait until go back to my home in dominican republic so things can go back to normal. i don't think i'll be coming to see her anymore because i'm not going to waste my time on someone who doesn't seem to care.

goodnight everyone

~Dave I remember in a show somewhere you were talking about how you have one of Kurt Cobain's Guitar's do you still have it? Were you a big fan? What is the story behind how you got it? Did you ever get to meet him? I am a huge Kurt Cobain/Nirvana fan and a Dave Navarro fan you guys tie in my first place. It is so true what you said about not regreting being an addict it is so true it is not all bad lol. Although i went through rough times with my addiction i also learned some of the greatest things about my strength and truely had some great times and memories from that i will treasure always from that time. But have to say that doing everything sober was hard at first it is like seeing everything through new eyes and that is truely awesome!! Like you have said everything i have gone through has made me who i am and that is how i feel. You have to go through the rough to get to the other side.
~Hi family~ Laura i am so sad to hear that you are not having a good time visiting your family espacially this time of year. I hope you have a better time later on i know it is hard sometimes when you want some time and they don't want to give it. Stay strong girl i know i don't know you but i feel for you.
Happy holidays everyone have a good x-mas and a Rockin' New Year Pary hard but be safe.

Jezzie! I work in Century City all day so if you're going to be anywhere near there let me know. The Westfield mall there has a lot of stuff.

Laura- Aww, I'm sure she doesn't do that intentionally.. have you tried talking to her about it and letting her know how you feel?

Does anyone else find it funny how Dave answers questions from the new post he posted on that same post.. so it looks like people are repeating questions that have already been answered.. do you get what I'm saying? It's cool though because he's answering questions that come up while he's online, so it's almost like a real-time chat.

Laura -

Don't be sad! And don't ever feel that you don't want to see your mother! Whatever is happening, you need to be with her as often as you can... I think sometimes people hold back emotion, especially in family-type situations, because the feelings are so strong and so deep and painful to let go of. You said, too, that she is always working and, well, that is important. As a mom, I can assure you that she loves you. You also said that she doesn't *seem* to care -- deep down, you know she does.

I travelled back to LA two years ago, having been gone for five years. I hadn't seen my brothers or nieces and nephews in all that time. We had arranged to meet at a restaurant -- I was so excited! For the most part, the dinner was like any other -- but I had been gone all that time! We are family! Why aren't you jumping up and down screaming and laughing (like I was with the nieces and nephews!)! I forgive them their seeming lack of emotion, though it hurt me very much (and still does -- especially at this time of year). We lost our mother while I was a senior in high school, and they were in junior high. My father followed 11 years later. Since then, this is the way it is, and I don't understand it, but I have come to accept it, because this is how they have chosen to deal with it. And I love them. Maybe there is a reason your mother is distancing herself -- give her the benefit of the doubt -- again, she loves you, and any time with family is time well spent. I guess what I am trying to say is I know how you feel, and it will be okay --

Be good to yourself...

Love,

algermom

anyone a fan of the Canadian "reality" series Trailer Park Boys ? It's hilarious!

Posted by: toyhorse at December 20, 2004 09:47 PM

Hey Dave and the fam. I'm loving the guitar in that pic dude, very nice. Speaking of acoustics, I have a couple of questions regarding them.
1. How often do you write riffs/songs from scratch on acoustic?
2. What is your fave acoustic to use?

...and another that is just a random
3. What kinds of alternate tunings do you use?

oh and by the way, I walked into my girlfriend's house today and caught her "working out" along with Carmen's aerobic striptease video... so a huge thank you to your wonderful wife for that highlight.

Have a good one everyone,
Trent O.

Did someone mention 'Trailer Park Boys'? It's one of my faves, I've been watching since BBCAmerica started showing it. It's even funnier than 'The Office'.

I loved the episode when J.Roc set up the 'disco' ! When Corey & Trevor met the "two hot chicks". lol

I actually know someone who looks exactly like 'Ricky'! The mannerisms are even the same, down to the way he poses with the cigerette hanging out of his mouth etc. I emailed 'Ricky's' photo to our mutual friends, they couldn't believe the resemblence, it's that eerie.

'Trevor' looks like Anthony Kiedis!

Hi Dave and all 6767ers!

I am done with my x-mas preparations.. i love buying nice little thingies for my friends and family!

I have one question:
What were your musical highlights this year Dave?
Bands, albums, gigs?

Mine would be The Music (I absolutely love them), The Mars Volta (i discovered them kinda late though...), and Velvet Revolver - especially live, APC's EmotivE with the best ever cover of "Imagine" - Maynard's voice makes me all dreamy...., oh yeah and The Pixies and some guys forming TPC and will hopefully blow us away with their album soon......!!!!!!!!!!

lots of love,

Dave~Please answer this question. I asked Billy Morrison a while back how you and he met, and he said to ask you....because you remember one time and Billy remembers another. So Dave, how did you meet Billy Morrison?

I adore today's photo. Lovely.

itanja and toyhorse

i love the Trailer Park Boys!

itanja...you gotta friend like Ricky? dontcha mean....REVEEN! lol

i heard when they were getting put on U.S. tv, that the swear words were getting beeped out!? wtf? .....man, they do that and there goes %75 of the show's dialogue....is it true?

Posted by: skot at December 20, 2004 11:42 PM

Hey Jane's Fan, There is a book of Tab out for JA. Its a selection from most of the albums, right up to Strays, not bad either. In the UK its available at http://www.ukmusicbooks.com/fav-janes-addiction.htm
Just got my paws on a Line 6 Pod XT.... wow, don't think I'll be leaving the house this Christmas!

Posted by: stevo at December 21, 2004 12:00 AM

Hi skot,

Yes BBCAmerica 'bleeps' out some of the swear words, not all of them. I've got to start taping the show or at least get the DVDs.

BBCAmerica has been bizarre lately.....non stop home repair & auction shows, yet they suddenly took off the British sketch comedy show "Brilliant" (which they've chopped up anyway, it's called "The Fast Show" in England) ....basically everything else on BBCAmerica has been repeats.

Skot, if you had your email posted, I'd send you a jpeg of my 'Ricky' friend, the resemblance is so bizarre, the first time my mom watched TPB she thought my friend was playing Ricky! She called me up & asked if the friend was now an actor!
lol

take care,
itanja

Hey 6767ers

Dave I was wondering are you using Yahama acoustics in the studio nowadays?? I read that Frusciante is into using all kinds of acoustics but then ends up recording with vintage Martins.. I guess I'm asking if you have a favorite guitar for acoustic parts.

Posted by: Jesse at December 21, 2004 05:22 AM

family stuff is often the worst and the best. i really resonated with this notion of feelings being so powerful that we restrain them. i often think of the relationship between power and creativity. one of the great wonders of creativity is that the very process puts the creator in a position of power. i believe the only true limiting factor at that point would be fear. live without fear and you may realize that you are indeed part of a very large family and we must love each other accordingly. love is equated with the heart and i have recently come to realize some interesting relationships involving beats and their influence on heart beats.

Posted by: scobra at December 21, 2004 05:23 AM

Haha! Andy Dick is one week older than me. I love him, ever since News Radio. My favorite episode of that show was when he gothed out on his 30th birthday. That was the best! He is hilarious.

Paperdove, welcome back! I tend to skip more posts than I read (I'm a major skimmer!), but I don't think Luiz has made an appearance in quite a while.

Just a few more days until Christmas and I want to wish everyone a merry one!

Mine will be hectic as my little boy found all the wrapped gifts from Santa. Now Santa has to buy a couple of new gifts and re-wrap the old. He is into SpongeBob and getting all new bedding for his new bunkbeds. So all I have to say to him is "Oh Barnicles!"

Anyway - love the Q & A. Keep up the good work!

Bless All

Laura lou.....tell her!!!! It seems you have two separate issues....one with your mom's job, and one with the guy...She can't really help dedication to job, I mean, I don't know the whole story, but if I only saw my child once a year, I would definitely have to throw myself into something...Maybe what you sense as her indifference is just her way of insulation from eventual pain of seeing you go again...As far as the guy, well, I am NOT the one to talk to about that, ask my boy, the only thing I do different now is keep my boys and my boy seperated, does that make sense? I don't bring men around my boy...that is something you could discuss with her.

Whatever it is, don't let it fester inside, remember that book The Four Agreements, don't make assumptions, talk to her, she loves you...and so do we

Nothing but longer days for the next six months (at least north of the equator).

Dave do you collect vinyl albums anymore?

I don't even own a good record player anymore but I like the big cover art. Just ordered my bro the VR and APC albums on vinyl for his b-day. It's hard to find this stuff in local stores but on the internet it's find-able.

He popped in a month or so ago (maybe longer...you know how time flies)posted a time or two, asked Dave a question and then seemed upset when he got no response...haven't seen him since.

I think of Luiz often and hope all is well with him...he is a sweetie.

Dave, I'm looking forward to hearing more TPC songs. They seem to have potential. Of course, the problem is that everything you do will be compared to JA. My hope is that TPC puts out not just catchy songs that crack the charts but off-the-wall moody things like JA did. Those are the kind of songs that ensure in my mind. Do you expect TPC to cover the spectrum of styles and moods like JA did?

Is there anyway you can post the video of you at the BET performance? I apologize if you have already and I didnt see it. Do you think that performance spurned the calloboration and ideas for the Linkin Park with Jay Z Mash up? Have you seen the dvd and if so, thoughts? Thanks. Have a terrific holiday!

Sorry people, but it’s been awhile,

Well I have defeated the mechanical beast (aka my Toyota Tacoma). I had about 1,100.00 dollars worth of repairs quoted to me by mechanics. SO you know what I did? I bought the guide for 15 bucks, busted out the tools and for about 2 and a half days worked like a crazed man on the damn thing. So my brakes, radiator, Trans, front diffs, rear diff, and transfer case were worked on. Total cost 200.00, trips to the auto store 7, a realization that when you have your car worked on by mechanic things start missing (bolts/parts etc.) I tried to work on my truck and keep it all organized, didn’t want my landlord to see my yard and think “Sanford and Sons. It was challenging, but it’s nice to do manual labor sometimes rather than pushing computer keys all day.

*Karma coming back to me-A lady I know down the street needed help “off the clock. So she offered to help me in return, her son is a Toyota mechanic and he said he would help me out with changing the timing belts for a hundred bucks. If you know how hard timing belts are then you get the importance of the Karma thing.
