Wiltern
Tonight we play at the Wiltern Theater in L.A. It sure is good to be home again. I know that we are broadcasting CFR from the venue tonight for an hour I think. What an amazing experience it was to play with Lou Reed in New York. He is one of my all time heroes. We played two songs with him, Venus in Furs, my all time favorite Velvet song, and The Blue Mask. I will never forget that night. When Lou took the stage, the vibe in the room just got deep and heavy and you could hear a pin drop during Venus, that is, if one was to dare to drop anything. Tonight should be a lot of fun too. I know that there are still plenty of tickets left if anyone is in the L.A. area and has nothing to do tonight.
Sunday I will have time for the old 10 Q&A format so feel free to drop some questions.
Have a great weekend...

Dave & DN Family,
I am good Karrie. ¿How are you?
I can't wait to see ITANJA's pics from the Irving Plaza show. Hopefully she got a good shot of Gina Gershon.
Everyone have a great Saturday.

I couldn't find any info on the website about tonight's show being broadcast on CFR... I'm wondering if the show starts at the usual time?

17.16... it's been so rainy today! <3 that's the only good thing about living out in the countryside for me these days. When it's really rainy, all the fields and trees and bits of green life get loads of new energy and purity and stuf. (apart from that, it's a bit cack living in the countryside.)

DN Fam,
One more thing. I forgot to comment about THE ROOTS. I agree with DENISE who commented earlier. I thought that THE ROOTS were great. I only heard a few of their songs before Thursday. Now I have to get their CD's. They did a great job with WHOLE LOTTA LOVE. Their drummer and bassist are amazing. I like ?uestlove's hair. They could easily become a rock band if they wanted to.

Dave,
Here are some questions.
¿When do you think THE PANIC CHANNEL album will be out?
¿Were you a fan of THE ROOTS before the show at Irving Plaza? If not, are you now?
¿Will CAMP FREDDY ever record an album?
¿Will THE PANIC CHANNEL ever start up an official fan club?
¿How hot is GINA GERSHON?
¿Will you ever get a mohawk like PERK?
And thank you again for giving me another autograph on Thursday.

Mike, you are totally right about The Roots. They are one of the best yet underappreciated group of musicians out there. Black Thought is my faavorite (living) MC, and ?uestlove and his 'fro are just the shit. Would've LOVED to see them on stage with CF, especially playing Whole Lotta Love. I saw them play last in February opening for Erykah Badu and they were just awesome (they played a medley of songs that were popular at that point in time from every genre and easily kicked ass at all of them). So glad to hear that they're gettin' some love from 6767ers...
Anywayy, can't wait for the show tonight, and Dave, the hair's lookin' good!
Posted by: Natalie at October 23, 2004 09:53 AM
Hey Mike, Hey Dave, Hey 6767 Family --
First, NO! Don't EVER even consider getting a mohawk! LOL.
Mind you, it looks cool on Steve, but I just can't picture Dave's dark, silky mane all butchered up like that.
Here's a possible question for Dave, since he's so computer-savvy:
?
When you post, are you a decent typist, or do you do the infamous 'two-finger' thing?
?
Cheers,

DAVE,
Some questions for you,
Since DTTAH was such a good read,do you think
you will ever write a full autobiography?
It would be very interesting, especially the early
Jane's years!
Secondly, did you know that you inspiried the
first verse of "Californication" by RHCP?

Lyrics to CALIFORNICATION
Psychic spies from china
Try to steal your mind’s elation
Little girls from sweden
Dream of silver screen quotations
And if you want these kind of dreams
It’s californication
It’s the edge of the world
And all of western civilization
The sun may rise in the east
At least it settles in the final location
It’s understood that hollywood
Sells californication
Pay your surgeon very well
To break the spell of aging
Celebrity skin is this your chin
Or is that war your waging
First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of californication
Dream of californication
Marry me girl be my fairy to the world
Be my very own constellation
A teenage bride with a baby inside
Getting high on information
And buy me a star on the boulevard
It’s californication
Space may be the final frontier
But it’s made in a hollywood basement
Cobain can you hear the spheres
Singing songs off station to station
And alderon’s not far away
It’s californication
Born and raised by those who praise
Control of population everybody’s been there and
I don’t mean on vacation
First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of californication
Dream of californication
Destruction leads to a very rough road
But it also breeds creation
And earthquakes are to a girl’s guitar
They’re just another good vibration
And tidal waves couldn’t save the world
From californication
Pay your surgeon very well
To break the spell of aging
Sicker than the rest
There is no test
But this is what you’re craving
First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of californication
Dream of californication

Sean - yeah, your the guy I was thinking of... I was the girl sorta sitting on the lamp post with the long black coat, black corset, and red pants. I was with a kinda shorter gut with longish dark hair + a goatee. When you first came over you asked him if Dave had come out yet. We were kinda behind you and to the your left... Who were the other people with you?
To the guy with the black beanie + brown jacket with a shoter girl with curly hair... we saw you at the nj signing too + the guy I was with was talking with you a little bit before Dave came out... are you here + if so who are you?

Dude,
I just finished Scar Tissue last night and read DTTAH last week. I feel a bit hung over from such a heavy dose of intense self-destruction and carnage. It was weird to read about things that I remember happening back in the day. Like Hillel passing or all the brutal long nights at Small's when Keith Morris was the bartender. I was on the fringe of that group and partied with Scott's crowd. The Pasadena "downtown" society of inebriants. I got clean and moved about the time OHM came out and it blew me away that these guys who I was sure were going to kill themselves (you and Tony) had made great music together, let alone were still walking around breathing oxygen.
I've said it before but I'll say it again... I am so glad that you made it out alive. Not just you but Bob, Pete, Tony, John, Perry, Scott...because you and many others are so inspirational artistically speaking. You make great art and you make me proud to be from LA.
There is another list of people who just flat out didn't make it like Hillel, Brad Noel, Layne Staley, Rob Ritter, Elliott Smith, Kurt, and many others who just couldn't kick and now we can only miss them and learn from them.
I hope that isn't too much of a bummer but I think it is important to realize that because we are reading about the sex, drugs and rock and roll lifestyle, people should realize that addiction is not fun and certainly not glamorous. I don't get cravings too much anymore but after these two reads, I started to jones and had to stop, play with my kids and clear my head. Get my perspective back.
Speaking of which, it is a beautiful day in San Diego and me and my kids are going out to fly a kite. It's so great to be alive.
Much love "a la toda familia 6767!"
Rock on!
Imaboutado!

Hi Dave,
I read your book cover to cover, and this little bit inspired this question, page 67 you talk about recording a record with C.Smith and for the first time having more control than in the past "...express myself through the words of other people-occasionally words i didn't beleive in."
So my question is this:how do you get through things like this with band members who may come up with words or music that doesn't inspire you(although given the talented people you've been in bands with i doubt this is a regular problem),and secondly have ya ever written a part that has a certain mood to it and when the band get involved the mood of that part changes into something you wasn't really going for.
I ask this because the second part of my question happened to me,i wrote words and guitar part that had a sombre mood to it and the singer wanted to turn it into a pop sounding thing, same notes but different mood altogether,i was mortified but went along with it anyway.I know a band is team work and equal contributions need to be sounded out to see what works best for the song, but i didn't speak up,afraid it might have boiled into personal attacks on each others input to the band.So we went with the upbeat pop style that to me contradicted the words.
All the best

NightBird - 5'0 here! The picture we took with Dave (Sean, Sue, Kristen, Emily & I) I was actually bending at the knee a lot, but I guess it might have been accurate of my real height! I was wearing at least two inch platforms. I agree about the birthdate thing! Mine is 6/17/77 ;)
My brother JD emailed Dave last night and he replied saying "I remember you & your wife." Heh, I guess I should take that as a compliment, being that he's six years younger than me! But no! That's just wrong! My brother is also about 5'10 (and thinks we should wear nametags that say "brother" and "sister" to the next event :)
I haven't given much of a review of the show, but I pretty much agree with everything that has already been said. The Roots were fantastic... really talented musicians. Billy, Donovan, Perk & Chaney... all of them not hard on the eyes and musically stellar. Dave's hair... yes. Reminds me of when I first met him; my favorite length. Stop wearing hats!!! I guess the hat is the equivalent of the sunglasses for Carmen. And yes, WHERE DID YOU GET THAT COAT?!
The exchange between Dave & Lou Reed - I feel so honored to have witnessed it. I can't fathom - the equivalent for me would be to play with Dave. As he's said, very heavy vibe & awe inspiring. Dave's my Lou Reed.
It was really nice to have met so many people from this site (Denise, itanja & Rob as well... hi!), we should all go out for coffee sometime. I'm going to send a bunch of photos to Sean soon.
Have a great day guys! I'm sure it goes without saying, but have a fun time tonight for anyone going the show!!!
(Can I use any more exclamation points?!)

Good Morning Dave and Family!!!
It's a beautiful overcast Saturday...more rain in sight and I am sooooo happy!
Dave...three questions:
1) Is there anyone else that you'd like to play with, as much as Lou Reed, but have not had the chance?
2) In your book and on several other occasions you've mentioned creating "art"...do you still and what type of art...do you paint, draw, make stuff...???
3) What do you do with Daisy when you travel...and if she does not go with, does she get pissed at you for getting left behind?
Thats it for now....have a killer show tonite!

Hey, Theresa! I wasn't referencing a picture, silly. We met briefly after the show the other night. I was the brunette who Sean introduced to everyone, and then, like a flash, I took off. (Total apologies... I had people waiting for me.) I'm Adina. I saw your petite stature first-hand. :-)
And my bro and I have had similar experiences where people are like, "You guys make the cutest couple." And we're like, "Eeeeeeeewwwwwww!!!!!" He's 5'10 and blonde (looks like my mom), and I'm a bitty brunette. The only physical trait we truly share in common is our smile, but it's easy for people to miss that. Hey, you're only 12 days younger than he is. 6.5.77... my little Gemini darling. Gosh, how I adore my brother. I have to call him now.

Twisted Angel, I think I have a pic (sideways) of you and the goatee'd guy you were with, I was getting a lame shot of Perk in the van and you guys are in it. I'll email it to you on Monday, it's at work.
Mike from NYC-the last I heard, Camp Freddy's album of covers should be out in early 2005, I think I saw it on Blabbermouth.net.

Hi Dave,
Thanks again for the amazing show on Thursday.
To add to Tino's question, how do you feel about all the commercials w/your music in them? Do you have to authorize it? In one hour I saw 3 of them, two were on Bravo.
And do you listen to The Mars Volta? If not, you should check them out. Love them (you can tell by the email address) they are so trippy! I tried to catch them with A Perfect Circle but the stopped touring for our shows so we got Mini Kiss instead.

Hi Theresa,
Nice to meet you too.
I still don't remember emailing you years ago! If you find a copy, scan it & please send it to me! lol
It seems like a lifetime ago when the 'old school' people here posted on the other Dave boards & chats.
WHY did Deena have to leave so soon after the gig? It would have been great to finally meet her.
Yes, we should all do some sort of 6767 re-union around the Christmas Holidays or something....we'll look at each other photos of the CF gig & exhange our past concert experiences.
Can't wait to see your photos. You were dead center, a great vantage point for shooting a show. Damn my flash unit breaking!
take care,

itanja - It surely does seem like a lifetime ago. All of these happenings are giving me serious deja-vu!
I didn't take a single photo the whole show, I was terrified they'd take away my expensive digital. It was also hard to get to - we were packed in like sardines. I also probably would have gotten the twenty incredibly tall photographers packed in front of me! And I'm sorry to ask this, but I don't remember your real name!
Sue - love Mars Volta!

Hey Dave,
Since you said to ask questions..I'm going to re-write mine that I said a while ago. So, here's my random question :D
In your song "Hungry" there is a man (prolly you) and a woman whispering to one another before it goes back into chorus..
Exactly what are the words they're both saying? I do have something in my mind on what they're saying but I want to make sure from you since it is you're song..I've always wondered what they're saying.
Thankies and Ciao <3
Vanessa
btw- I really love your book..I wish it was hella longer because I just couldn't keep it down..it's almost like a fairytale ending..And Dave and Carmen live happily ever after and til death do they part hehe

Hi Dave,
Any thoughts on JEFF BUCKLEY? Did you ever meet him?
Apparently, Jeff was a big fan of Jane's Addiction. In fact, he was listening to a mix tape with JA on it, singing along to Three Days at the top of his lungs on the way to Wolf River, the day he met his fate.

Adina - I thought that was you, but didn't want to say so incorrectly (like I did to Ellen! Sorry Ellen!) Gemini, eh? Hey, is your brother single? Despite popular belief, I'm not attached to anyone ;)
Sean - thanks for posting it, dude!
Dave - thanks for the oral fixation. I can relate. All of the kisses and licks and putting things in your mouth onstage... I'm a big fan. I remember fondly the hearing aid story.
I'll stop clogging up the board now.

Sarcastic mister know it all
Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you ’cause

With the birds I’ll share

With the birds I’ll share

Push me up against the wall

Fallin’ all over myself

Dave, my question to you, I'd love a reply, but I can understand if you can't.
It's the 3rd day of writing conceptual stuff for my album and I realised something that is ironically upsetting: I seriously think I've already let go of the crap I couldn't get over that I wanted to write about for the album. Which, leaves me wondering, "what now?". I have $4000 worth of gear... I am not compelled to write about something I am over, and am not compelled to write a fucking party/dance/pop/happy album anyway. I joked to myself I could write about the depressing fact that what I've wanted to do for 10+ years suddenly has no use. I layed there and thought about conversations and memories of the people that've came and gone in my life, and I feel nothing, not even a hint.
Have you ever experienced something like this? Your thoughts? Thanks much. (Listened again to TNO today... never gets old!)

Itanja, it would have been great to meet you too! I was hoping I would, but I guess now that's a good excuse to plan a gathering! :) I didn't get to see Theresa either. I was rockin' out (and getting squashed like a fly) on Dave's side of the stage, with Spread list Lisa and Lori and another friend of mine, Amy.
So how 'bout a NYC gathering? I haven't hit up the Yaffa Cafe in ages...
I'm so siked for CFR tonight. I've got the hookup ready to go. I'm going to record it externally on my Tascam cdrw, but it's going to end up being an analog recording. I originally tried to go S/PDIF out from my Dakota PCI soundcard into the Tascam, but I wasn't getting a signal and didn't have time to mess with it. Cross your fingers for me that it comes out decent! :)

Hey everyone,
Deena - I echo itanja's sentiments. We were looking forward to meeting you. I would love to get together for some kind of NYC hangout.
Twisted Angel - Now that you describe yourself, I realize that I was standing right near you during the show! (Your date reminded me of a mini-me version of Dave. :) ) I had blonde hair and a beige/rhinestone tank top. I was standing near Mike from NYC and his girlfriend. Sorry we didn't get to officially meet, but maybe we can do so if we all get together one day!
BTW... For those of you tuning in tonight: I want to catch the radio show, but my computer's acting up these days, so I may miss it. :( Let us know if anything interesting happens!
Finally, Dave/Perk - Break a leg tonight!

Posted by: deD at October 23, 2004 04:33 PM
Dave- I just finished DTTAH and I think it is an excellant book. I noticed near the beginning of the book that something was said you about being afraid of being perceived as a sellout by your fans and so not taking up certain opportunities when they come up. I know now that you seem to have changed your mindset about this and I believe you have written about it on here before. I know people (mostly on other boards) have critized some of your choices, but I just wanted to say to you that I definately admire the fact that you take the opportunties that you want to take and that interest you and you don't seem to make the decisions based on what other people may think of them. I know I worry too much about what others think when I make my decisions, and I think I would be much happier if I just did what I wanted. It seems to be working well for you.

Hi Dave,
How are you doing this fine Sunday morning?
Fantastic!
ok, I quoted this guy, matt, for a number of reasons.
The Ani Di Franco question, cause I asked once what your favorite ani song was,
MATT!!!! I love Ani Di Franco's untouchable face.
It reminded me of who was it, Mark and Brian from KLOS< or maybe these goofy djs here in Redlands, it was a "Who would you do?" (see my answer below)
Reason number 3, it allows me to put in my cheese:
"Who is your favorite PEANUTS character?"

Hi. Maybe a shot in the dark .....I am currently with a band (RedCell) out of Vancouver, Canada. Wonder if D.N would be available or even interested (for that matter) in adding guitar talents to a track on the upcoming CD.
Would love to add D.N's sound and unique style on a song.
Female fronted, heavy edged, a little dark. Would Love the opportunity to have Dave play on a track!! Is that possible?

Hi All,
What's going on with the broadcast of the Camp Freddy Wiltern show tonight??
I thought Camp Freddy were going to be on the air PERFORMING live tonight, but they just signed OFF from backstage at the Wiltern a few minutes ago.
Dave was joking around with Terri Nunn, that was hysterical. I didn't know Terri was still singing, I though she went back to acting! Great to know she's still around.
Dave was describing some sex technique, but the talking part of the broadcast was rather low, all the music breaks came in loud & clear. lol
I'm still listening, but I don't think the performance part is going to be on live from the Wiltern. :(
take care,
itanja

Mike, the Yaffa Cafe is on St. Marks. Here's some info:

The place became somewhat customary at NY uni gatherings way back when. Real cool atmosphere.

during the winter break i would LOVE to get together with you NY 6767 guys and just talk music, concerts, dave and anything else. i really regret not being able to see you guys at the irving plaza show...cause i would've loved to...but due to missing a week and a half of classes straight, i really had to get back to school...i couldn't miss friday classes (i have 4 on friday). so we should all definitely get together during winter when i'll have no classes to get back to. it would be really great to see you all and just have the time to sit and talk and not have to worry about getting somewhere on time. we'll try and work something out.
much love and happiness

Hi Dave,
My first time here & I know very little about you, so figured I would take advantage of the Q&A before the comments are closed. I don't remember much from the late 80's, but I remember Soundgarden's Louder Than Love, Ministry's The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste, and Nothing's Shocking. They are among my desert island discs for sure. You are partially responsible for twisting my brain in a way that words can't adequately describe, and for that I thank you.
Back to the present. Didn't get a chance to say hi to Billy's Morrison & Duffy Thursday, and haven't met you yet, so I'll tell you here - the Irving Plaza show was AMAZING! Holy crap. I just zoned out for a few minutes thinking about you guys doing Venus in Furs with Lou Reed. FUCKING INCREDIBLE.
Ok, here's my question. I'm a painter & photographer, and I'm always interested to find out that musicians I admire are visual artists as well. It's obvious you put a lot of thought & effort into your appearance, from tattoos to wardrobe & hair & makeup (I'm assuming it's not all the work of a stylist), so does this visual creativity come out in other ways too? I'm curious to know your artistic background, influences, favorite medium, subject, and if you have links to your work anywhere. Stuff like that. Like I said, I know almost nothing about you, so forgive me if this question has been gone over 1000 times already & is causing collective groans to emanate from the peanut gallery. Thanks! :)

hee hee hee....don't think it looks quite so "continental" when I do it, but the thought is what counts...er....um....yeah! :) hope to see ya soon my friend (Dec 2 ???)
Natalie...I was hopin that shout-out was for me :) but I was up in the "rafters" with the bats, lol, so couldn't really respond to find out :(

hey all, goodmorning!
i haven't posted for a while..i went to see Maroon5 last night, good show, they had a lot of energy and they were playing with the audience. that's always good cause you don't get the feeling they're just passing by and happen to end up on this stage, but really enjoying all the attention and beeing there.. it's not the kind of music i usually listen to, a bit too much pop, but it was a great evening anyway. after the show i was all pomped up but i had nowhere to put my energy. so my friend and i decided to learn how to play guitar...accually, she gonna learn it to me. can't wait!
we had a lot of time to talk about it cause we missed the last bus home and we had to walk. and my parents came home last night and they brought me a live CD of Led Zeppelin 'Earl's Court 75'..i wanna play guitar like that, arrrrg...and damn, i had to read a LOT of posts this morning..!
all the stories about the show, the questions..it's great to be back :D
okay, talk to you later, dave, have a great show tonight (m not sure the 'tonight show' from your post is already happening, cause for me it's sundaymorning) and everyone who's going, tell us all about it!!
love, emma

OK.. maybe I shud have asked BEFORE the shows in NYC... damn.. oh, well.. next time, but let me know of any gathering plans.

Hey Dave I read in one of those weekend newspaper magazines that your going on one of those commercial space flight type things.
I'm just curious what sort of preparations you need to have to go on the flight aside from being able to afford it, heh.
Also I just wanted to mention that yesterday I was lucky enough to find your solo album 'Trust No One' at my local music store in Australia with a 'special import' sticker on it and a slightly reduced price, it's quite a good album, the store I go to is awesome. =)

Question for Dave - do you put your own songs in your iPod? :D
Posted by: Theresa at October 24, 2004 09:45 AM
Dave,
Can you make a playlist at iTumes.com? I've been introduced to such great music here that I think you would put together a great playlist -
Hugs everyone!

I have two questions. So here they are
1. What was it like working on Martial Law episode "The Friendly Skies" with Bret Michaels???
2. Do you think you would ever work on a song with Bret Michaels??? He is a great artist!!! I think you two would do great on a song together!!!

Good Morning Dave, What brand of coffee is in your cup this morning?
Seriously, Have you thought of forming your OWN record label? Spread Records, here's a partial list of artists you could sign
Banyan
Doheny
The Panic Channel
Camp Freddy.....
oh, the list goes on and on. What I also think would be cool is if you hooked it ALL up over the internet, sold records through your site, sold merchandise through your site, made tix available to your gigs through your site, and so on. You have already proven that you can reach more people through building a solid web base, the communication you have with us ensures our undying loyalty, and the interconnectedness of the artists lends itself to success!!
Dave,I know this is probably something you have already thought of, but it seems like it would be a way to circumvent the closed mindedness of today's music industry, which only wants to put money behind acts that ensure commercial success.
The way that you and Billy, et. al. have reached out to fans is inspiring, you allow your fans to contribute their creativity to your projects.
ok, sorry for the rambling, back to more important question
Is that same sparkly fur jacket that you are wearing in picture in your booK?
jezzi(thanks, Nightbird)

HEY DAVE,
You're still wearing your hat, and like last week you said you were trying to grow your hair out, yet this week it looked really long.
HAIR EXTENTIONS?

Mike from NYC....i go to stony brook university out on the island...about an hour and a half from the city (two hours by train)...but it's really easy getting back and forth...so it's worth it to have the get together in the city.
BH...hmmm good point...we might be able to do something a little further...it all depends...but you should def be able to see some of 6767-ers
