Just posted my book review over at Amazon.com, under my own name. *waves* LoriAnn Thompson, that's lil ol' me.
Now I have the esteemed pleasure of the company of laundry ... and vaccuuming ... and dusting.
I know you're all jealous. Don't try to hide it.
Much love,

Lori I am jealous! That is what I am suppose to be doing - not setting here, sending e-mails, scanning pictures and articles, playing with the kitties, reading DTTAH . . . I do know how to multi-task!
Did ya see USA Weekend Magazine - Dave and Carmen are first story and Scar Tissue is the book review . . .
Always,

Dave saw the interview with Carson Daly and thought that was the best!
Now I have to remember to get a tape so a friend can tape Celebrity Blackjack for me!

family- hope you all have a great day. Just wanted to check in before I go to work. I will try to catch you all tomorrow evening.

LOL Lori! I just read your post on the sound page.... believe me girl if I could I would buy you and the rest on here 7 cds for their birthday. Unfortunately I am not CEO of my book store's company :) Besides if I was CEO I would flown Dave and the rest of the family here, and we would have had our own private signing there :) Ahhhh A girl can dream can't she?!

Dave & DN fam,
Just wanted to say "hi" to everyone. Dave, I had several friends over last night and all of them flipped through your book. They liked the pics and the format of the book. They didn't know how much drugs was a part of your life at that time.
¿Would you consider a follow up to DTTAH in a couple of years? It could be like a "before and after" kind of book. Especially if you have kids.
Thanks for signing my book in NYC.
Later & have a great day,
Mike from NYC

so last week i saw dave's guitar dvd on ebay and picked it up for a few bucks expecting some laughs, jams...etc. - all i can say is man...that was such a strange tape...moments where dave looks like he wants to be anywhere else but there, a scene where he explains the use of olive oil in cooking pasta...
my favorite part was at the end where dave says pretty much 'the dumbest thing you can do to try to learn guitar is to watch a video like this'
=)

hang on. I don't live in the US. oh well. Perk for President anyway! yeah!
wow, wouldn't the government be a little strange if it was run by rockstars instead of actual politicians. I don't know what would happen, whether the general rule of rockstars > politicians thing would stop working...

seems im in a music rut these days...i've recently come to the realization that im one of those nuts who are stuck in an era...im living in an early 90's bubble and cant get out to taste new tunes. not much left in the scene these days that excites me.

Wendy thanks for all the great pics.
I am so sad CFR is a repeat. I was hoping to win tix. Oh well.
In the meantime, Wiltern pit tix are on TM right now and if you use the promo code DAILY you get a discount making a will call pair $97 with all TM fees. Just not in my budget this time. NY show has a discount with this code too.

Just watched the The Story of Janes Addiction on Much More Music here in Toronto. Although depressing in light of what happened in June, I enjoyed it very much. They showed clips of a video for True Nature and was wondering if it had been released yet? "One of the greatest gifts in my life is to have PF as a frontman." I hope you still feel that way and I look forward to round 4. Good luck with everything in the meantime, but you guys together are the high, as a wise man once said a year ago. Can't wait to watch Three Days which I just ordered, although I wish our dollar was stronger. Take it easy

I was just listening to Spread, and some of the background noises on it sent my kitten running under the bed for cover! That was just too priceless. I hadn't listened to it in a such long time - I love these versions so much.

Hi leanne.
Looking from some 'new' music? Why look for 'new 'music?? :) There's a world of all sorts of music out there to check out & listen to.
Besides waiting for Dave's new stuff, of course, I'm not too enthusiastic about much of anything out there these days. There are a few interesting people & bands making music, but most of it is downright vacuous fluff (every posin' female pop singer who can't sing) & repetitious (everything else). I'm one of those people who basically just waits for the new albums by my 'old faves' like Dave, The Cure, etc.
As far as music which is already out there.....there's a world of older music out there to explore....from jazz (Miles, John Coltrane, avant-garde jazz etc), to 60s Brit pop (I'm personally AMAZED at the amount of 'old' 60s Brit pop used on TV ads! The Kinks "Picturebook" on the HP ad really cracks me up~! That record is over 30 years old & still sounds fresh today. Good music will always be timeless. Someone asked me what that song was on that HP ad & if the band was 'new', they wanted to buy it!
Why not listen to old Yardbirds, Hendrix, Bowie, 80s pop Ska (even old 60 Ska!) ...there really is so much out there. When people complain of no 'new' music being produced, I always direct them to music which they've probably missed.
I come from a musical family. Having been exposed to all sorts of music at a very young age, that early exposure definitely gave me an open mind & ear to listen to everything. One of my uncles was a music producer, so he was always bringing in new tapes for the family to listen to.
My dad listened everything from jazz to The Beatles to Hendrix to 60s R'n'B to opera/classical to Brazilian jazz. He had a very open mind about music which also contributed to my love of music. When my 70+ year old dad says that Jimi Hendrix was the greatest guitarist to ever live, I have to give him a lot of credit for being so open minded. I don't know too many 70+ year olds who even know who Jimi Hendrix was.
Personally, I don't listen to much stuff out there these days. Except for Dave & Velvet Revolver. I got the 'new' Cure album when it came out. Any music I've bought recently hasn't been current.
Just because something is very popular or a hit (whether it be music, movies, books etc) & everyone else likes it, to me that's NEVER been a barometer of how 'good' something is. Mass appeal usually makes me run the other way. LOL Which of course, isn't to say that popular music can't be very good, The Beatles were extremely popular & changed the face of pop music.
Though it seems these days, you really have to sift through an awful lot of real crappy stuff to find anything truly inspiring. A good way of judging any current music might be to ask yourself; "Would I pull out that CD & listen to it next year OR even 5-10 years down the line??" If it's truly disposable, then it's not worth buying.
What am I listening to right now as I'm typing this?? My entire Clash collection, LPs & CDs. I caught the movie "Rude Boy" on cable a few weeks ago, that film got me thinking what a truly great & timeless band they were, live & on record. Joe Strummer is very missed.
Back to cleaning & The Clash.
I hope I've helped you with your 'music rut'. ;) Happy hunting~~!
take care,
itanja
Posted by: itanja at October 16, 2004 05:26 PM
Have to agree with itanja...
With the pressure to sell pre-packaged, highly stylized, unoriginal, unartistic droning crap...I rarely buy any new music. I have been collecting records since the seventies and I have bought only a few "new" pieces of music all year. I listen to just about everything from Sinatra to Jane's to Bauhaus to Cuban jazz.
Here is a list of things to listen to that most people don't have in their collections... Not that these are obscure just that most people haven't been exposed to it or just spend their cash on more popular music...Here goes.
Desmond Dekker and the Aces- Original Jamaican Ska. Layered horns, great beats, amazing vocals. Key track-Isrealites.
The Pogues-Punked out traditional Irish folk music. Great songwriting. If you like Flogging Molly, you'll love this. Key tracks-Fiesta, If I Should Fall From Grace With God.
Joe Cuba- Sizzling latin jazz. This is great to put on just before you are going out to party. Put it on just as everyone comes over for drinks and it sets the mood. Totally rhythmic and spicey. Also see:Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo
Thelonious Monster- From the same scene as RHCP's and Jane's Addiction. Punk/Folk/Funk/Blues all thrown together by the seat of it's pants. Bob Forrest is one of my all time favorites performers. He's amazing. I can't tell you how good this band is! Key songs-Try, Union Street, Sammy Hagar Weekend, Walk on Water. (also see The Bicycle Thief. Bob's side project.)
The Cramps- This is the most underrated rock and roll band ever. It all started with this band. The Ramones get all the credit but nobody was darker, heavier or more original than the Cramps. Their first album came out a year before the Ramones. Not that they're better than the Ramones but definitely less credited. Key songs- The Fly, Can Your Pussy do the Dog, Green Door (cover), Lonesome town.
Elliot Smith- Poor Elliot is gone almost a year to this week but his music will never die. He is the most honest and heartfelt songwriter I have ever seen. Seriously in the same class as John Lennon, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Ray Davies. My favorite album is the Figure 8 CD. But listen to them all. Key songs-Happiness, Son of Sam, Stupidity Tries, Memory Lane, Between the bars.
Agent Orange- Still around and kicking ass. Southern Cal Punk rock with surf sensibilities. This band rocks so hard for just three guys. Mike Palm is a great songwriter. Monster guitar player. Key songs-Bloodstains, Bite the Hand that feeds, Pipline cover.
Gotta go but give these a check. Rock on!

FYI - the latest issue of Vice Magazine Vol 11 #9, has a picture on the cover of Dave playing guitar and Jacko singing. It also features an article that includes a "top five Navarro moments" written by Helena Muggenfield. Pretty fun.

"from jazz (Miles, John Coltrane, avant-garde jazz etc)"
Yes! you can't leave out Louis Armstrong!
And Thelonius Monster- you know I love it!
I love the Cure but I honestly haven't gotten much into British pop... I'll have to check that out more.
I finally got PJ Harvey's new album today.. getting ready to listen to it now.

I second that, Maria, Louis IS jazz!!
But, you know me, loving the ladies...Billie Holliday is my fav!
As for new music, well, there's not much out there that doesn't sound recycled, but I am patiently waiting for TPC..
Emma, if you had been here today, we could have walked across the street and gone to the Fallfest at the University and seen Taking Back Sunday, the Used, Atticus, Matchbox Romance...oh...and lots of boys!!!
LoriAnn-Loved the review of both Dave's book, and my 'poetry'

heyyy itanja!!
you're awesome, thanx for the lengthy reply! much appreciated!
yea heh i failed to chose my wording correctly...i actually didnt mean 'new' as 'brand new'; but as, 'new to my collection'. ya know? mind you, im also curious to bands worth checkin out in the scene right now, as i've been hiding in my bubble from them all for the past yr or 2.
i will look into your suggestions!!! much thanx! it's funny cuz im totally open-minded...its just i cant seem to go beyond drowning myself in the bands that i have always known n loved. and i feel as if i'm missing out on sooo much. also, many favourties of myn aren't hangin on so i'm left with few to anticipate new music from.
--"Though it seems these days, you really have to sift through an awful lot of real crappy stuff to find anything truly inspiring."--
i echo that!!!! exactly my problem.
thanx again!

andy - also caught the jane's bio...agreed, much enjoyed! and amidst the deep side of things, had some damn funny interview clips!
also happened to catch dave interviewed on Extra tonite... when asked what replaces the 'drugs' in sex, drugs & rock n roll, dave replies "the gym & the apprentice/reality tv". lol. cheers to that!
he also mentioned his desire to have a baby girl...as he loves c.e so much and the thought of having a lil version of her would be the end-all!

Ok, so after a couple loads of laundry and some general housecleaning, I laid down ... and woke up 5 hours later.
Took my son to the mall, bought a couple movies at Suncoast, got something to eat ... *inserts the sound of Charlie Brown's teacher talking*
Anywhooo ... it's 4:30 a.m.; and, I'm wide awake, eating a bowl of Count Chocula, and watching "Say Anything".
I have to go back to Suncoast, cause their current sale is all $14.99 movies are 2/$20 and they had more movies that I wanted than money I brought.

You've been gone so long...all that you know...has been shuffled aside as you bask in the glow...of the beautiful strangers that whisper your name...do they fill up the emptiness?.................................................you have been drifting for so long...I know you don't want to come down...But somewhere below you, there are people who love you...and they're waiting for you to come home...please come home...

Leanne, Emma. You're very welcome. I hope you enjoy something new and different.
Just a tip for anyone in the Pasadena area. THEE best place to buy records (VINYL that is...)is the Pasadena City College Flea Market. Last Sunday of each month. Get there early because the Japanese collectors fly in and buy whole crates, sight unseen, pulling big wads of cash from their pockets. That never ceased to amaze me.
Anyway, I went digging into my own stuff and came up with a few nuggets.
Tom Jones-Two albums in particular are really great. The Live in Vegas album is appropriately cheesy and has a great version of "Yesterday" which introduces as a song by "these two cats...Lennon and McCartney. Cheesy but very cool because TJ has such a great voice. Also the Live in London album is great too but extra special because Jimmy Page is the lead guitar player. (Pre-Led Zep.) JP was a British session player for TJ among others. It is not listed on the album but you can tell it's him all the way thru.
The Rolling Stones- Sticky Fingers. This is the darkest and most amazing Stones album in my opinion. The whole thing is riddled with dope references but more importantly is just a beautiful record. The real difference is that if you played this album for the first time today, it would sound like it just was released by some southern rock band. Key tracks-Can't you hear me knockin', Wild Horses, Brown Sugar, Dead Flowers.
The Harder They Come- Original soundtrack. From a movie about a Jamaican musician caught up in the day to day crime and poverty in Kingston. Jimmy Cliff plays the lead and has some great songs here, like the title track. Also Desmond Dekker, The Maytals and the Melodians. If you like any kind of Ska, this is like a greatest hits. Every song is great but my fave is Pressure Drop by the Maytals.
Velvet Underground and Nico- OK, Here's the deal... This is another record that still holds up. If you played it today, it is better than anything currently on the charts. That is the way all music should be measured. Does it hold up? F-Yeah! The most brilliant thing about this album is when it came out, all the hippies were singing about flowers and love. Velvet Underground were singing about getting strung out and erotic sexual encounters. Key Tracks- Heroin, Venus In Furs, I'm Waiting for the Man.
X- Under the Big Black Sun. This is such a dark and moody record. It was made right after Exene had lost her sister in a car accident. There were a lot of extenuating circumstances and it is all laid out in the lyrics. This is my favorite X record because they had developed into great songwriters in the sense that they didn't have to play fast to rock. The ballads here are intense and heartfelt. Get this CD. Key tracks- The Have Nots, Hungry Wolf, Blue Spark, Dancing with Tears in my Eyes.
Have fun.
I'm gonna play some music and enjoy the rain. Yep. It's raining is San Diego.

good evenin all,
i went to the dutch Lowlands festifal this year and saw Franz Ferdinand perform, i was already a fan of their music but they were great on stage..it was a good performance. i was standing so close to FF that i could practicly whipe off their sweat. i also saw the hives, the offspring, velvet revolver(it was too crouwded, everybody wanted to see Slash, so at the end no one had a good view) and the darkness (a good show is always fun especially if they enjoy giving the show) and the dropkick murfys, Flogging Molly, the white stripes, blood hound gang and N.E.R.D. (he lost his voice a couple of times).
festifals are great because the thrill you get from a good show, you get like 5 times a day. you don't get any sleep, you're dirty, smell bad, are hungry and drunk..but its awesome. i definitly go again next year. the line up is good at the Lowlands festifal. you also get the oppurtunity to see bands performs you never heard of, which i always like.
have a good sunday everyone,
enjoy the rain, you're not made of sugar
love, emma

Last book read- The Lovely Bones- It took me a very long time to read, because I kept getting upset. Sometimes there isn't a happy ending, but an ending nonetheless.
The last book that upset me like that, I put down in the middle and never picked it up again.
NO, Not THAT BOOK

Last book I read.... you mean in its entirety? I have a tendency to start several books at once, and then never finish any of them. And I admit, Dave's book is among the masses of stories never allowed to fully unfold by my attention deficit. But hot damn, I've begun a helluva lot of books. I guess I just have issues with things ending. :-)
The last few books I started reading (other than DTTAH) were:
The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem; The Little Black Book of Stories; Fearless Girls, Wise Women & Beloved Sisters: Heroines in Folktales from Around the World; Hit Men (by request of my boyfriend so I can understand his job and the people he deals with better... and NO, he's not a hired goon... the book's about the unscrupulous men on the business side of the music industry)
Jez... I think I caught your illness. I must go retire to the couch, blow my nose and watch movies (or better yet, I should read a book... to fall asleep).
Oh, and I have one current music suggestion for Leanne at the moment. I will have more when my head clears. AFI. I can't stop listening to Sing the Sorrow. And Davey Havok ain't so bad to look at either.

Hey Leanne... I read part of that Dan Millman book. I also read part of his book "The Life You Were Meant To Live." I suppose if I'd actually finished that book, I might have some idea where this life was heading. :-)

Alas, my direction is.... back to the couch.
Posted by: NightBird at October 17, 2004 04:14 PM
Oops... I forgot to respond to Deena's outfit dilemma. To answer your question, yes... what the HELL do I wear??? Actually, I think I have a few clues. I'm a vintage clothing freak... so I'll probably be the tiny pale chick in some funked out 70s garb. Or maybe I'll dig back a few years into my closet and go sorta ethereal goth, Stevie-style. What are your thoughts, dahhhhling?

My taste in books is as varied as my taste in music; however, I'm a huge sucker for historical romance novels ... and, if they're set in Scotland, all the better.
In light of that, the last book I read before Dave's was actually a re-read of "The Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon.
My NEXT book will be another re-read -- "The Scarlet Letter" (my favorite book of all time, ever)
Hope everyone's having a great day!
Much love,
~~ Lori

If you enjoy lite fiction...Janet Evanovich has a wonderful series about a somewhat inept female "bounty hunter"...the books are hysterical, Evanovich is very witty,...all in this series are titled with numbers: One for the Money, Two for the Dough...etc. If you pick these up, and like them...you will not be able to put them down.
Similarly, Sue Grafton has a series about a female private detective, also very comical and witty in parts and all in this series are titled with the alphabet: A is for Alibi, B is for Burglar, C is for Corpse...etc.
The books are bestsellers, crime/drama but the writers each have a style that really combines humor with drama.

dude, you guys rule. It's good to see others out there with varied musical tastes and that don't just listen to one genre. 'Diversity' is the key word here.
the last book I read (before Dave's) was Scar Tissue... which I am getting signed Tuesday at Border's in Westwood.
To anyone else on here that might be going they are handing out wrist bands at 10am on Tuesday. There is no getting in line until 4pm and he is signing a maximum of 4 books per person. He won't be personalizing the books (it's at his discretion) and no autographs or signing of memorabelia.
my birthday is the weekend of Nov 12/13 and I want to have a party or go out somewhere or something with a bunch of people.. and of course fellow LA panic agents are invited. Once I figure out where/what it'll be I'll let you know. If anyone would be interested let me know!
I have no idea what I'm going to be for halloween.
I was thinking Cousin It from the Adams Family...haha
Hope everyone's having a good Sunday!
I finally got Strays yesterday and I can't stop listening to it! Fantastic. it's all on my blog.
-peace-

OK...this is my confession...page 114 is my favorite page in DTTAH...call me superficial, call me what you will, I know this is not what the book is about...but, page 114 is hot and I have a lovely, vivid picture in my mind now...thank you very much ;)

Steve, TOM JONES HELL YEAH!!! (Useless trivia: Dave and Tom share the same birthday.) I'm a big T.J. fan, and have been since I was a wee one. Live at Caesar's Palace is another great cd. He does a great cover of Soul Man. When I was about 4 years old my Dad would play the record and I would dance around the living room and sing along, "I'm a SNOW man." :)
Nightbird, I'm feeling the 70's vintage/funky vibe bigtime. I'm right there with ya, that's the way to go. I just can't get a handle on the shoe issue though...

i am going absolutely insane watching Boston try to win this game. i am not a fan of the Yankees OR Boston, but it would just be nice to see Boston win at least one game this series.
here's a link to some pictures from the VR show on wednesday. this is the same site that Annie posted a link to with pictures of Dave's booksigning.

i watched E True Hollywood Story on Carmen yesterday. wow... i didn't realize how little i knew about her. in Dave's words, "colorful past"!
did anyone else see Dennis Rodman (on CPS tonight) throw away THREE QUEENS when all he had to do was call $1000? i swear, i could not believe what i was seeing. come ON!
only one more week to get through till i see CF again.

@Maria: I read what you wrote at the RHCP to that person concerning Dave and AK publishing their books at almost the same time. Thumbs up for that. Some people should better think before writing crap.
Sorry, off-topic.........

NOW THIS IS WHAT I LIKE TO SEE!!!!!!!!! :-)
GOLD MEDAL: Dave Navarro, 23 points. He's the least famous of this trio, but he's definitely the most twisted. Especially considering that all of his misdeeds took place in a single year. Dave Navarro, we salute you!
Dave we love you even if you are a twisted freak... You fit in well with the rest of us!

Have fun in New York. And Give Emily (blondimofo) a kiss for me. She's been through a lot.

Maria-- hey mouse, I would SO love to party with you on your birthday, mine is in November as well, let me know! How is the cold?
Cori- I didn't bring my copy of DTTAH? What is page 114, is it Adria's narrative, cause that's what made ME hot!!! By the way, love your book recommendations, but remember, next Sunday, Jezzi's book club discusses Don't Try this at Home I have a feeling we will be spending a lot of time on 114...
Lest I forget my vow to pimp Deena's site
HEY< HAVE YOU CHECKED OUT DEENA's SITE?
Deena, can you make a link from your Calendar page to main site?
Steve- man, I love your record reviews! Have you ever heard of Uncle Joe Benson, that's who you remind me of

Maria~great idea linking up the blogs.
I've got a few going, but my main one is on blogger.
It annoys me a little that if I make a change to the template, say add links in, I have to republish, so it takes me a while to get around do doing it. I do it only when I am feeling very patient.
I started using My Space, thanks to a link via Doheny's website, and it's really easy to link up to each other on there as friends, and write a blog.

A question I have about the book - is Adria a pseudonym? I remember Dave having a different long-time girlfriend from the old 6767.com days, even remember him mentioning her when he posted video footage from "invaded at home", around the time it happened. If the real "Adria" is who I think she is, then the picture above the chapter title "About A Girl" is not, in fact, the girl he proceeds to talk about.
anyone know?
Posted by: Kid A at October 18, 2004 09:05 AM
Well in the beginning of the book it mentions that the pictures were moved around, so the pictures showed near paragraphs may have nothing to do with the people mentioned in the paragraphs... So maybe that blonde girl is not Adria.

"Maria: I read what you wrote at the RHCP to that person concerning Dave and AK publishing their books at almost the same time."
honestly, i hate to do things like that but it just set me off a bit... would have probably been easier to email the person directly but I felt it should be on the fanclub BMail after it especially since we have seen nothing but rave reviews of Anthony's book on there and the only one that talks about Dave and his book pretty much trashes it and the person probably didn't even read, or should I say want to read, DTTAH. Hopefully i didn't come across too harsh to anyone- i don't want to start anything- but we have to keep it real and respect the former members, you know? Have to balance it out.
It's funny how on message boards and similar places situations that don't even exist are made up and cause all this controversy. I don't get how their book releases could possibly be some type of competition between each other. Where do people get that from?
Jez- my cold is fine, had a jamba juice with a cold buster boost and some green tea and felt much better yesterday.. but i feel I'll be calling in sick to work tomorrow to go to Anthony's book signing! hehe

Good morning everyone :)
I read that little comparison and it was quite funny...I am glad dave got the Gold! :) I hvae yet to read all of scar Tissue yet, but it so far has not even compared to DTTAH. I am getting Tommyland this weekend, so we shall see.
I have a question for you all...
sat. at work this guy came up and asked where to find scar Tissue and so I took him over there and I went on to talk about Dave's book and the guy says that he isn't intereted because he and his wife think Dave is too flamboyant.... I gave him a strange look and went okayyy. My question is, do you guys see this or am I just too biased to see Dave as being flamboyant? I just don't see where this guy is coming from.
Have a great day!
Karrie :)
