Back to Recording
Today is another full day of Panic Recording. I gotta roll out so have a wonderful day. Chris, there isn't much more I can say that the community hasn't already said. My prayers are with you and just know that you can get through all this.
1. By the way... where can I get tix for the Key Club show?
They aren't up yet. The show will be on December 2nd and cost $1.03 plus a can of food for the hungry. Indie 103.1 is sponsoring the event.
2. What's your favorite Zeppelin track to listen to? How about to play?
Listen: In The Light
Play: Kashmir
3. Will you be at the NAMM show again this year.
Yes, I'll be spending a day with Yamaha acoustics and a day with PRS. I don't know the specifics yet.
4. Dave, is a black woman without the badonkadonk(sp) just as fly?
Two words. Halle Berry.
5. Dave, have you ever played a live show that wasn't, umm, not so live?
On my solo tour we had some sounds and back-ups on tape, but when the machine got screwed up, and it did often, we just played through. There wasn't really anything too important on tape so it didn't matter. Just the "icing" stuff. Lead vocals, guitars, bass and drums are always live.
6. Im trying to contact various rehab clinics ect... and it seems like everywhere you have to be over 18 years old. What do I do? Why wouldnt they want kids to get off drugs just like anyone else? I realize its the law that makes it difficult, not the pople who do a great jobs at these places.... but how can a kid who does want to quit do it?
You need a parental signature or release. There are plenty of clinics that deal with adolescents. Be sure to look into those.
7. Hey Dave, I've always wondered, on the song One Hot Minute, who's screaming at the end?
One voice is mine through the pick-up of a Flying V, the other is Flea.
8. Who's your favorite rapper?
B.I.G., DMX, Mos Def... Anyone abbreviated.
9. I would like to know what kind (i.e. gauge & manufacturer) of guitar picks you use?
I don't know who makes them, but they are simple medium picks. A lot like Fender medium.
10. How long ARE you planing to grow your hair out? or are you just kind of improvising as you go along?
I'd say improvising.
love,
DN

Good Morning Dave and Family!
Chris...good luck...I really hope you find help with your struggle. You know we are all here for you.
Jezzi...I missed you too! How are you??? My favorite Halloween costume was the year I dressed as Elvira.
Nightbird...I have a small butterfly tattoo at the top of my right thigh in front...just a couple of inches under my hip bone. I first got it when I was 15, it was a heart with my BF's name in it (stupid!) I then had it covered with a butterfly several years later. I am open to new ones, really wanted several more when I got the first one, but no immediate plans. I really need to get the butterfly touched up...colors are very faded from so many years in the sun!
Happy Monday (ugh!) Family!!!

btw just finished the book today.....thanks for publishing it Dave, what an amazing read...i guess all has been said already about it. Anyway i really like it though at times it made me really really sad and disturbed..but i also laughed a lot and the end was just
sweet !!!
lots of love,

I always thought it was Chad that was yelling at the end. wow you are solving life's many trivial yet intriguing questions one by one for me, Mr. Navarro. (:

i'm so excited for the panic channel material to be released...i'm sure it's going to sound awesome...the power of jane's addiction...w/o the nasal voice of perry (don't get me wrong...i love perry...but come on...the guys voice does get grating after a while)...but i have a feeling this band is going to be one step beyond jane's...even better...i'm so excited for it.
and chris...once again...much love and support coming at ya from this end of the country (NY)...i hope everything works out for you.

i have a question dave. i am in the throes of deciding whether i should hit LA in early december to catch The Panic Channel show at the key club.. will tickets be pre-sold or is it a line-up, first in best dressed thing? i don't want to end up in LA but not at the show..
thanks for your time! can't wait to hear some new stuff!

Chris,
The best of luck. I am pulling for you,
Dave,
Thanks for answering my Gina Gershon question.
¿Does NAMM ever make it out to NYC?
¿When you visit NYC, do you ever go to Manny's Guitars? I know that a lot of rock star do go there. I believe that it was in the video for "Paradise City".
¿Have you seen Juliette and the Licks perform? If so, how are they? ¿Do they play original or cover songs?
Thanks again,
Everyone have a great day!

Crescencia... Dave is kissing Terri Nunn, frontwoman for Berlin. And goddamit, I had to see Gina Gershon. Who's got bad luck? Who? (My boyfriend begs to differ.) Is it me, or does it seem the LA show was much hotter than NY?
Posted by: NightBird at October 25, 2004 10:27 AM

Adina, my little nightbird
Devil with a blue dress, a blue dress on..
Devil with a blue dress on....Good Golly, Miss Molly
Who SANG that....?
Dave---do you remember the first time you went trick or treating? Did you have a mask with the rubber band that kept breaking, or did you go more traditional, like ghost, vampire, or hobo?

Nightbird,
What is wrong with Gina Gershon? She is hot. Dave seems to think so too.
I was at the show too. Where were you standing? I was with my girlfriend and DENISE. We were on the right hand side (if your facing the stage) and about 4th row deep.

jezzie~ You Americans and your trick or treating. Guess who buys a dumpster full of candy EVERY year and waits for the doorbell to ring? (I say a dumpster full
because that's where the goddamn candy ends up when no kids EVER show up!) I don't get it. Sure I live in a street with no lighting, right next to the woods and my only neighbour is so stern even I'm scared. I thought that was the point of Halloween, that it was supposed to be scary. Damn kids.
I wish I liked candy.

DN Family,
I asked Dave about Juliette and the Licks because they are going to perform in NYC on Saturday Nov 13th. I plan on going to the show no matter what, but I just want to get some background info on her band first. In case you don't know, actress Juliette Lewis (CAPE FEAR, NATURAL BORN KILLERS, etc.) is the lead singer. I don't remember what venue they will be playing at, but is somewhere near Chambers St. If any of you guys want go see them or want to hang out before the show let me know.

Does anyone have an idea how I can have a cheap trip to L.A.? I REALLY wanna see the Dec 2 show at the key club but I need to ask for time off. How can I keep it a cheap trip?

Hey Dave,
Was just hoping that you might read this and pay you hommage reguarding your book with Neil and how I truly related to your philosophies so to speak and the lessons that were learned. Especially referring to the topic of love and insecurities inside ourselves... I am real happy for you and Carmen and I am glad you concluded the book with her as the topic and how you found one another with some stories leading to the relationships initial growth. Good performance on celebrity poker as well ;)
Peace
PS. You could consider 2Pac an abbreviation as far as fav raps artists go. You must listen to him if you like BIG and DMX.

Hi Mike,
AGREED Mike, nothing wrong with Gina.....she's very cool, a very good actress plus she can actually sing!
Gina was great in NYC.....plus we got to see DAVE & LOU REED perform "VENUS"~~!! That definitely gets a high rating in my "ALL Time Great Rock'n'Roll Performance Moments"
The NYC show was awesome. One of the best concerts I've seen in a long time.
Anyone interested in checking out Gina's singing, should catch her IFC series about taking her band on the road. I'm sure it will be repeated, IFC ALWAYS repeats!
take care,

My friend is FINALLY coming from Colorado, but he can only stay a couple weeks in November, hoping to take him to gig, but he won't be here for Key club dates...grrr, Abby, Sarah, Wendybird, someone with some info help a girl out!!

Mike from NYC... I'm not contending Gina's hotness. I actually noted what a "smokin' woman" she is in my review post on Friday. (PS I used the word "smokin'" before Dave did) I give her tons of credit for branching out from film to music, but in my personal opinion, and in the opinion of my ringing ears, I had trouble with her voice. And it's not that I think women should sound "clear and pretty," as I am the ultimate fan of the gravelly goddess Stevie Nicks. There is just something about Gina's voice that grated on my nerves so much that I had to leave the room. Probably the same quality of her voice that makes me change the channel every time her show is on IFC. But I concede, she's lickable. (I said lickable, not likeable.... and definitely not listenable.)
I was standing in various places on Thursday. I tend to be restless in crowds. I described my bizarre need to be away from the stage in my Friday post about the show. Call me crazy; call me neurotic... just don't call me Shirley. I met Sean, Theresa, JD, Sue & Kristin for a quick moment after the show. By the way, Twisted Angel, I now know who you were because I'll be honest.... I noticed Keith, and I thought, "What a cute little Dave!" Anyway, I was not among the rest of the 67 fam near the stage. But if you saw a dark-haired, pale girl in a long flowy black dress with an empire waist, black-framed glasses, and black boots with 5" platforms standing with a short guy with a shaved head and a nosering in a snazzy 70s brown leather jacket, you might have glimpsed me. :-)
Posted by: NightBird at October 25, 2004 12:15 PM
Guys, you're all totally entitled to your opinion about Gina. But I'm standing by what I think. It's cool if you liked her... I just didn't. Not a biggie. But I would like to start my Fred Schneider-in-a-Box venture right here. Who wants one? :-)

All looking down the street cause here she comes,Â
Wearing a wig and shades to match,Â

Wearing pearls and a diamond ring,Â
Got bracelets on her arm and everything,Â
She's the devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress,Â

Got to be the the finest thing alive.Â
Walks real cool, catches everybody's eye,Â

Not too skinny and she's not too fat,Â
She's a real hum-dinger and I like 'em like that.Â

Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels was the band.... and I wouldn't have known that without google.

hey dave,
i just read that you are one of 7,000 people signed up to ride the virgin galatic when it starts up. thats awesome. any idea on when that is going to be up? your going to post pictures when you go right? how much does something like that cost? are you worried about safety?
Posted by: Mark at October 25, 2004 12:30 PM
Hey Dave,
I forgot to ask about the part in your book where you mention someone asking you if you have ever shot heroine into your dick. I dont remember there being a definitive answer on your side but I guessed you may have. Now, if you did, do you believe it may have been the precursor to your dick getting bigger like you said it did later in the book? Im not going to go shoot my dick with anything since I am happy but just curious after reading it. Also, just an aside. I think you might like the movie Garden State if you havent already. Its an idie film with Zach Braff from the tv show scrubs and natalie portman. It deals with tradgedy and how this person finally comes to grips with it and finds love at the same time.

Thanx for answering my previous question, it's very nice of you.
Here's another thing I would like to know.
Do you actually warm-up on guitar before going on stage or in the studio? If yes, what kind of exercises do you use?
Lot of thanx!

Hey Dave and the fam,
I'm just as anxious as I'm sure everyone else is for the Panic Channel stuff to be released... from what I've heard of you guys so far, it is amazing. Sounds like everything is coming along well... keep it up man!
some questions:
1. How in the world did you come up with the idea of using a vibrator? (on your guitar that is)
2. Isaacs has been mentioning this "Project P" on his site alot... has he let you in on any of that yet or is that just something for him?
3. Um... when can we expect TPC's album and tour?
Sorry this was sort of a lame post... just had to get those ?'s off my chest. Have a good one ya'll!

let's see... where do i begin???
saturday night was really one of the best nights of my life. my boyfriend (Sean), my brother (Justin) and his girlfriend (Nathalie) had a blast at the show. we started the night by hanging out in our parents garage, smoking, drinking and listening to CFR.
the wiltern is very impressive. i felt so underdressed walking in there in my TPC shirt, jeans and converse. my boyfriend leaned into me and said "oh yeah, i forgot, in LA, everybody dresses up when they go out." Aisha Tyler was hysterical. i leaned into Nat and said "it's Charlie!" (we are both huge "Friends" fans) and i also remembered that she was on Talk Soup a while back. great sense of humor. we did it all for the BOOBS!!!
of course, as usual, Camp Freddy ROCKED THE HOUSE!!! me and Nat were right up in front the whole time. well, almost. at one point, we tried to migrate over to Dave's side of the stage, but it was so crammed up there we couldn't get close, so we headed back to Billy's side. on the way back, i recognized a chick i saw in line at the Dragonfly for TPC show. i stopped to say hi and it ended up being Annie. HI ANNIE!!! so, before CF came on, my boyfriend pulled me back and said "look", pointing to the drum set with the huge TPC symbol. a few people asked me what my shirt meant and of course, i told them all about TPC. gotta get the word out!
the entire show was awesome. Billy was so much fun to watch. he had this smile on his face the whole time... he's too cute. at one point, he climbed out onto the fence between the crowd and the press and we were all touching him! and when Steve came out, he shouted "where's princess Abby?" Abby, i knew you were there and that was so cool for you!!! and when the show ended, Dave came over to our side of the stage and reached his hands out to me. he squeezed my hands for a couple seconds and left. it was so cool to be acknowledged. then, through the links posted earlier, i found the picture of it: http://www.wireimage.com/GalleryListing.asp?navtyp=GLS====83264&str=&styp=&sfld=&nbc1=1&sortval=3a&PageNum=5
picture # 3721612, the last picture in the third row. you can't see me but i don't care. i know i was there!!!
after the show, we went out the back exit and went down the ramp to where the door was to backstage. there wasn't very many people hanging around so they didn't really give us a hard time. first, Chris came walking out and i couldn't hold back - i yelled "Chris Chaney!!!" he was SO cool. he stopped and talked to us for like 5 minutes. we talked about the show at the Dragonfly and NASCAR. then Steve & Riss came out and i talked to them for a little bit too. i told Steve that i knew Abby was there so i was sure she heard his shout-out. he's such a nice guy. and Riss too. so VERY cool. then came Dave. Nathalie was so cute, "can i give you a hug?" when she hugged Dave, she let out this huge sigh... i got her a signed copy of the book and she's really loving it. she later went to her friends party and all the girls were so jealous of her!! we talked to them for a few more minutes... Steve gave me a hug and then Riss did too. again, Riss - you are SO cool! we headed up to the parking structure and from the third floor, we looked down to see Dave driving his Buick Grand National (Justin is a huge car fanatic and knew what it was right away). Dave - is that an 87??
so, all in all, perfect night. only thing that could have made it more perfect would have been if i had my camera. but of course, me being the good girl i am, i didn't want to break the rules!!!
THANK YOU Dave, Steve, Riss & Chris for taking the time to talk to us and making that night so great. i can't wait to see you all again soon.

anyway, i caught the new show on bravo that carmen hosts called manhunt, to find the next male model. it is hysterically funny. i think everyone would get a good laugh out of it. i'm such a sucker for elimination reward shows like that though & it's cool b/c i partied at the standard downtown over july 4th wknd so i was happy to see them staying there :) anyway, carmen was really sweet about the elimination round, noting that she came from ohio & faced rejection herself & giving the guys confidence & respect. the guys are actually very dramatic & fun to watch, so check it out! ;)
keep up the good hair, dave!

Dave,
It blows me away that you actually care enough to take time out of your schedule to update your site and communicate with fans so openly.
If all artists could be half of what you are as a human being, the world would be a much cooler place to live.
I remember idolizing people back when I was in grade school and never having a means to communicate with them.
You're so real...it's sexy.
Posted by: Amber Lynn at October 25, 2004 03:16 PM
Dave I'm also curious about Andy's warming up question.
Mike from NYC-NAMM is in LA in January and Nasville in July, It's an amazing weekend if you can get in. You'll get to meet some of your heros and see some of the most talented up and coming MFs you've ever seen. Problem is it's not open to the general public, so you either have to be in with a guitarstore owner or salesrep or vender. Or if your endorsed, that makes it easy.
Chris hang in there man.

Hi Dave!
I've a chance to see Jerry Cantrell and Billy Duffy on Halloween. They are playing at a small club near my home in Austin. What do you think- trick or treat with the four year old, or rock out? I can't make up my mind... drat!
I have never seen Jerry Cantrell perform, but love his music.
Take care, and I hope you all have a lovely, spoooooky halloween!

I happened to catch the episode of Punk'd the other night with Dave and Carmen!! Too funny!! One of the better one's. But, as usual, staying true to form, Dave was as polite as possible, when i know i would've been kickin the guy's ass!!!
A true gent!!
Off to see Tommy Lee at his book signing here in NJ tomorrow night! Where as i'm pshyched to meet him, i'm sure it will pale in comparison to the last one!!!

Nightbird - my last name is White, so i have been using "SnoWhite" as my email forever. my mom actually used to joke with people, telling them she was gonna name me "Snow" when she was pregnant. sometimes, i wish she had. how cool would that be!! it sure as hell would have been better than "Sarah", which so damn common! but no really, i love my name. it means "princess"!

Sarah, I am gonna try REALLY hard to make it down for the December show. I have to say that I saw Dave in an L.A. club. I have to find someone to go with, I don;t want to do the trip by myself. OOps, time to punch out. I will finish this tomorrow. There is gonna be a big storm up here so I might not have power here at work. Keep your fingers crossed that I don't.lol. Ok, take care and love to all. Sweet dreams to all and to all a good night.
Love, CC

Hi Dave! Do you ever have the need for unsigned singers to guest on any one of your projects?

Sarah (SnoWhite), this one's for you:
SARA by Fleetwood Mac
Wait a minute baby
Stay with me awhile
Said you'd give me light
But you never told me about the fire
Drownin', in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
But now it's gone, it doesn't matter what for
So when you build your house, then call me home
Oooooooo..
And it was just like a great dark wind
Within the wings of a storm
And I think I had met my match
He was singin' to me
And undoing and undoing
The laces, the laces
He said "Sara, you're the poet in my heart
Never change, never stop..."
But now it's gone, it doesn't matter what for
And when you build your house, well then, call me home
Hold on baby the night is comin'
And the starling flew for days and days
And I would stay home at night all the time
When I could go anywhere - anywhere - anywhere
Ask me and I'm there, yeah
Oooh, you ask me and I'm there, 'cause I care
In the sea of love where everyone would love to drown
But now it's gone, it doesn't matter what for
When you build you house I will come by
Ooooooooo, Sara
Ooooooooo
Ooooooooo
All I ever wanted was to know that you were dreaming
Sara
Oh...
Oooooooo, Sara, baby
Well, there was a heartbeat and it never really died

OMG!!! one of my favorite songs! for a long time (like 6 years) i have been thinking of getting a tattoo that says "the poet in your heart". i just may have to do it now! thanks NightBird!!! =)

NYC.
I saw Juliette and the Licks at the Sunset Street Junction this August and couldn't have been more blown away. The band is tight and rockin. Juliette is amazing. She never stops moving and preening. Her vocals are really monster too. Do yourself a favor and check out that show. I can't wait to see her again. I expected to see the cliche "actress who thinks she can sing" and seriously was blown away by her genuine rock and roll chops. Rock on!
S.
PS. I was wondering how Ron was doing with his problem. Hope you are moving in the right direction, man. Godspeed.

I'm going to the TOmmy Lee book signing, too! I surely won't be as nervous meeting him. (Although, maybe I SHOULD be...lol)I can't wait to see what kind of crowd he gets.

Dave,
You mentioned "In the Light" as one of your fave Zeppelin tracks. Is it me, or does the song One Hot Minute have a similar bass groove and droning guitar in the verses? I could never place my familiarity with OHM until I heard In the Light. Coincidence or inspired?
Take care. Geoff

Hi back at you Sarah!! So glad you "ran into" me crossing the floor. Always fun to put a face to a name.
As of Wed afternoon, I wasn't even going to the show. But, due to some good karma or something I found myself in the pit for a killer Camp Freddy show. And Steve singing was icing on the cake. So glad I was able to be there.

Dear Dave,
Was wondering, if you guys will be in the South Carolina or North Carolina area anytime soon. Would love to see one of your live shows.
Also, Good Luck on your book, it sounds like good reading. Also, my wife and I watched your marriage special to Carmen Electra on MTV and can't wait until the DVD comes out.
Take care,
Marion

helloooo people! mouse is back in the house...
Wow what a weekend I had. I went up to Sacramento and Mountain Veiw for both days of the Bridge School Benefit. Saturday was wet and rainy and muddy and cold. Those of us on the lawn made makeshift ponchos out of large black trash bags by making a hole at the bottom of it for the head and on the sides for the arms. It was quite a site, all the dancing trash bags. They didn't allow umbrellas.
Sunday the weather was perfect and the show was even better than Saturday. I'm so glad I got to hang out with dear friends I haven't seen in ages this weekend.
highlights:
Eddie Veddar doing Bob Dylan's "Masters of War" and another political song Ed came up with that went something like "Bush go find yourself another country" (I have to find those lyrics!!)
RHCP- their new song "Desecration Smile", "Brandy" by Looking Glass, a cover of Neil Young's "Lotta Love" and the Ramone's "I Just Wanna Have Something to Do"
Paul McCartney coming out to play with Ben Harper. Ben Harper is such a crazy fantastic singer!
Tony Bennett... he radiates positivity and is so pleasant to listen to.. the crowd loved him! He did a smooooth full dance turn both nights. He's still got it!
And Paul McCartney came out to play "Just the Thought of You" with him!
Neil Young having his wife and Eddie come out and play with him.
Paul McCartney... wow that was a killer ending to 2 great nights. I cried twice during his set. What a treat that was for me considering I love the Beatles but am too young to have been able to see them together live.
there's a review at http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2004/10/25/DDG4F9EUE11.DTL
Got back to LA around noon today (flight was delayed)but NO LUGGAGE. It was somehow left in Sacremento and is supposed to be delivered tonight. I had to zoom home and get ready for a job interview without any of my cosmetics. Oh well, at least I had my comb.
anyways, enough about me.
I'm happy for those of you that got to see Camp Freddy! Thank you for the reviews that enabled me to live vicariously though you.
Dave, the hair looks great. It would look great any way you did it.
Isn't that the hardest thing to decide, what in the world to do with your hair?
I have the urge to chop mine off and get a much needed dye job. It's getting a little too long.
alright, i'll stop babbling now.
Hope everyone had a good day!

Hey Geoff is NH. I'm Matt in NH:)
Dave, do you see PC ever doing any JA songs live? It's hard to imagine anyone ever being able to do Perry's vocals justice, but just wondered if it was something you'd try or not.

As for the Tattoo question, in the thread previous to this one, I have a Velvet Revolver logo tattooed on my left bicep, and on my left forearm a "B" for Baltimore (the Raven's logo). My next Tat, will def be The Panic Channel logo....hopefully by Xmas... I'll be around today if anyone wants to chat. Bye for now, gotta take the gf to work (someone has to pay the damn bills, right?) jk! Luv AD

Re: Dave's favorite Zep song to listen to,
did anyone else see Jimmy Page & the Black Crowes do "In The Light" during the 2000 tour? I saw them at Jones Beach and when they did that song I thought I was going to pass out, it was AWESOME!!! Talk about atmosphere.

Oh, by the way, according to the 2005 Rolling Stone calendar that Dave is in, TDDUP will be released on Jan 11, 2005 on DVD. And he has a satellite radio show (something like artist of the month) in Sept. 2005—any idea what that’s about?

Posted by: Casey at October 26, 2004 07:01 AM
dude i think i'm going to the tommy book signing tonite in ridgewood, too! i think i might have to make fun of nebraska to him b/c they suck. go mizzou! (mizzou's football team CRUSHED nebraska last season for the first time in 25 years...we all stormed the field, tore down the goal posts & embraced each other & random strangers...then my friend bryan ran up to me, as if in slow-motion, gave me the most passionate kiss and swept me off my feet! lol if only it wasn't bryan- d'oh! wish it had been our hunky basketball coach, quinn snyder lol) anyway...what can you do! it works.
but yeah, tommy lee is mad sexy. i know that sounds messed up lol but he's great.
