The Happiest Place in the World

Rsm_tpc_panic_grapesSo today we roll out to Anaheim for this private party. Rehearsal yesterday was a lot of fun. We have Mark McGrath doing, Jailbreak and Pretty Vacant; Scott Weiland doing Young American, Bodies and Sedated; Courtney Love doing All The Young Dudes and Search and Destroy. Of course we are joined by guitarists Jerry Cantrell, Billy Duffy and Lisa Leverage. I'm hoping that there will be video and pictures to share, I just don't know what the vibe is down there, private party and all. Speaking of video, we finally have some video from the Dragonfly show. As soon as it is loaded, we will upload some clips. When we do, please forgive the image and sound quality as it is really "home grown" style.

1. Dave I check out Page Six every few days & lately I am wondering how real their info is. How much of what the page six story on you is real compared to false rumor.

Well, most of that is true, except the Nikki Sixx thing, that was someone else.

2. But Dave how are you feeling about all this being released in papers, and elsewhere in the media?

I suppose I should have expected this, but I guess it just sucks that they don't point out that this was a year in my life that I have since recovered from. The media makes these stories look dark, interesting and even a little fun, but the truth is that these times were just awful. What can you do? I don't mind the stories, I just want the message of hope to be the focus, but I know I can't micromanage everything. I suppose a message of hope really isn't something that the Page Six people are interested in.

All the best my friends,

Dave

Just a reminder, Camp Freddy Radio is a repeat today.

Was it atall an MTV idea to kind of get you noticed by the Mtv reality show viewers before till death do us part kicked off? The cameo was great. I dont want to seem like im accusing you i just think its an interesting question

Last night at the Pixies show in Berkeley they're selling coffee, lattes, etc...and the name of the booth was 'Javaddiction' :)

Regarding newspapers...

1. The Wall Street Journal is read by the people who run the country.

2. The Washington Post is read by people who think they run the country.

3. The New York Times is read by people who think they should run the
country, and who are very good at crosswords.

4. USA Today is read by people who think they ought to run the country
but don't really understand the Washington Post. They do, however, like
their statistics shown in pie charts.

5. The Los Angeles Times is read by people who wouldn't mind running the
country, if they could spare the time, and if they didn't have to leave
LA to do it.

6. The Boston Globe is read by people whose parents used to run the
country and did a far superior job of it, thank you very much.

7. The New York Daily News is read by people who aren't too sure who's
running the country, and don't really care as long as they can get a
seat on the train.

8. The New York Post is read by people who don't care who's running the
country, as long as they do something really scandalous, preferably
while intoxicated.

9. The San Francisco Chronicle is read by people who aren't sure there
is a country .... or that anyone is running it; but whoever it is, they
oppose all that they stand for. There are occasional exceptions if the
leaders are handicapped minority feminist atheist dwarfs, who also
happen to be undocumented aliens from ANY country or galaxy as long as
they are Democrats.

10. The Miami Herald is read by people who are running another country
but need the baseball scores.

11. The National Enquirer is read by people trapped in line at the
grocery store.

I'm so glad to see that you're promoting the message of hope. it really is an amazing and HOPEFUL thing seeing how amazing of a recovery you've made and that's what i look forward to seeing in the book...not the stupid, drug-induced things that happened in that year...but how it's not what it's about now, and how you've grown past that...i think that's what's most interesting.

thanks for your time and those great answers! i look forward to the book!

Hello Dave,

I apologize for using your first name, but that seems like the modus around these parts. That said, I picked up your custom Ibanez from '91 on ebay the other day and was wondering if you have any info on it. I understand those days may be a bit foggy, but anything you can tell me would be great.

One day, I may have it rebuilt (as far as I can tell, the head stock and the bridge are missing), but for now it's going on the wall.

What I'd really like to track down is your old Desert Yellow Ibanez RG550 with the peace sign sticker. That's the first guitar I remember ever seeing you play (in the for the Mountain Song video). It's just a dream, but hey so was finding the custom Ibanez.

Have a great day,
Rob

Dave, do you ever search ebay for DN items?
I just purchased a copy of DTTAH (yes, I know it hasn't been released yet :p) that "is to be signed by DN in person on the 7th of oct." (Sounds pretty dodgy, I'll admit, but as long as I get a copy of the book I'm satisfied :) So I thought I'd encourage you to sign as maaany books as possible on that particular date, in case one actually ends up in Oslo, in the hands of a certain stern blonde, mkay? :p

Have a good one, everyone!

Hello Dave,

Dave for so many years I'm trying to play guitar, I'm always listening to your records and I always imagine myself
playing like you (yeah it's impossible to play like you but...) but my parents don't have enough money to give me
an guitar... And so I found this way to talk with you, I'm really glad of talking with you now, and I always wanted
to play guitar, so could you send me an guitar ? Please Dave, if you do this I'll be more happy than I can be happy,
would be a very great feeling, but if you cannot do this I really understand... Thank you by your attention, thank you
very very much Navarro, your musics in my life are such fine inspiration to live.

Keep rockin' Dave as you ever do, and ever will do, and keep touchin' everybody's heart as you are used to do.

Hugs from you ethernal fan, Sucess !

I don't read newspapers, so I wonder what category that would be?
I have a good reasons to avoid reading them. I read Kerrang magazine, and that's it right now.

Chantelle, I love the way you described yourself "a certain stern blonde". Made me smile.

Love to all, big hugs to you Dave.
Let us hope it's when the media talk about your book it's more along the lines of see how you can improve your life, and survive, and enjoy life most of the time! How it's possible to deal with your demons. I'm sure they'll be talking a lot about the demons though too. I mean, I was thinking about this, and people are going to find those stories amusing, I mean they are and then they are sad too. I thought the making a cover with Marilyn Manson tale was funny. (god or whoever forgive me! :P ) I know I've done stuff like that and it was funny at the time, and if I had it written down it might still be funny. But at the same time, I'd be like glad I'm not there anymore.
My mind doesn't spend much time thinking about what I did anymore. :D More like what I'm doing.

Love

I picked up your custom Ibanez from '91 on ebay

See, this is what I was talking about, albeit incoherently in my other post...The proliferation of artist's personal effects on ebay..

I understand the master guitar sessions, that's something that is out of production, the only place you can pick it up is vintage stores and ebay
But the guitar, how did THAT end up there?
I don't know how Dave acquired Cobain's guitar, but even he has said that if Kurt's daughter ever wanted it, he would give it to her...

And the book, Chantelle, first of all let me say, I love that you are from Norway, from whence my ancestors came, but if you truly want a book signed by Dave, let me know, I will stand in line with a copy and ask him to put your name on it. It's HIS book, I think he should get at least a fraction of the money for it, it would be one thing if it was out of print,

rambling, I am sorry...I just remember going to my first 'celebrity' book signing, it was for Jay Leno's children's book
There were all these people in line with their 5 copy minimum, and sure enough, most of them showed up on ebay

I, however, got the chance to look into a pair of blue eyes the likes of which I had never seen, he shook my hand, listened to me ramble on about my girlfriend, and signed the book with Happy Birthday wishes and a little caricature of his face.

My friend literally jumped up and down when I gave it to her

Maybe I am wrong, somebody convince me.

evening all,

i was watching "i love the 90's" today while doing some house-cleaning. it was "i love 91" and the very first thing they did was 90210, and there was Dave doing the "duh-nuh-nuh-nuh, nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh (clap, clap)". okay, that was my bad interpretation of how the 90210 theme song would be typed out. but anyway, it was so funny. i loved that show. i even have the theme song ring tone on my cell.

still pissed Dave is in MY city and i can't be "there"...

Jez~ I SO AGREE WITH YOU. I usually don't use caps but I had to for that one.
I said to my companion here, man if I were in the USA, I'd stand in line and get signatures for people on here that wanted them, I'm sure Dave would be cool with that, and it's his book. I mean I would stand in line in for people myself here in the UK or wherever I was.
Also, I would buy it from Dave, or ask someone like Dave about it. Okay, I was planning to anyway, but I'll get around to that later. I just wanted to say Jez, right on.
Plus the Ebay thing is freaky. So is "Dave can I you give me a guitar?" Dave would have to give us all guitars then see? I'm poor too. Right!? Then Dave would be.
Okay, ranting. I also want to know where these sellers on ebay get this stuff?

Oh I did have Cyndi Lauper's hat at one time from a concert at my college, my close friend grabbed it when she threw it off on purpose to be caught, and he didn't want it. He was an engineer working hard at the show for free. So he gave it to me because I love hats. I have no clue what happened to it, I suspect it was taken from my dorm room, along with my some of my art, some LPs, etc.

If I saw it on Ebay, I'd be grrrr!

I am almost positive you can get that master guitar sessions from Amazon.co.uk, I know there's a video of Dave's on there and it has to be the same one, he did only one right? Amazon is very inexpensive, and reliable. :P Lmao. Not a plug, I use them.

Posted by: ylais at September 25, 2004 07:31 PM

There was a big thing here in UK very recently over tickets to The Darkness shows at Wembley Arena, which are coming up this December.
The tickets all went, then they were immediately on ebay. And some tickets were for a show not even pre-sale, somehow they had tons of tickets not on sale anywhere yet. It's a stupid long story, but they got done for it, and were on some crimebusters show in the UK. Plus these sellers are very big on Ebay.
It's a whole group of people. :(

Posted by: ylais at September 25, 2004 07:48 PM

Addendum~How did The Darkness management know about the tickets on ebay being sold like that? Well, some Darklings saw them, and one of them (remaining anonymous) contacted the manager. See how easy that is! :P

Posted by: ylais at September 25, 2004 08:00 PM

Dave

What kind of a party is it? Like a industry party or some one just shelled out the cash to have all you guys perform along with some fucking great cameos you mentioned. Have you ever met Britney Spears? Was she nice enough to ya? Just wondering.............
While I'm making with the questions just thought I would ask have you ever taken part in what the fetish community call "breath play"?

We should all strive to be more like Dave........yet remain with our own flavor

Hope the show goes famously!

Dave and LA Family,
My Baby; oldest child, Constance Kauipualokelani, is going to be in LA from the 29th to the 4th of October for her birthday on the 3rd. (Wish I could go, but another time! Can't have Mom around on a trip like that!) What shows and CF or TPC stuff will be happening that week? She is 25, so can go where she wants but isn't renting a car as far as I know.
Dave, she is the biggest fan and is OH so very proud you have her name tatooed on your back! She only gets out there once every year or two, so what will she NOT want to miss that week?
Thanks,

Hey Dave,

Don't sweat the 'Page SUX' crap, as I already posted here, New Yorkers look at The New York Post as a big joke, it's like The Inquirer passing itself off as 'journalism'.

On the other hand, any writer reviewing DDTAH is unfortunately going to bring up the 'sordid' aspects of it as a big selling point, especially if they write for a sleazy newspaper such as the Post. Of course, printing outright lies in a review, is plain unprofessional shoddy journalisim.

The Post ceased to be an informative, entertaining paper when Murdoch took it over many years ago, it was actually considered a semi-respectable paper way back when.

Hey joel,

Thanks for the 'newspapers' review....LOOOL....that was GREAT!

take care,

jezebel~If Dave does a signing near you, you know I would LOVE to get a copy signed! :)

The only book I have that's signed is Manson's autobiography, and I got that off ebay too. I've compared it to my other Manson signatures (obtained in person) and it appears to be real. Now even I have heard of these auto pen signatures (or what you would call it) but this doesn't appear to be one.

Even though I've experienced first hand how annoying it is when people buy tickets for shows and stuff you want to see, just to sell them for twice the price on ebay, I don't think ebay is all bad. For me who lives in Oslo, there are lots of stuff I'd never get a chance to ever lay my hands on, if it hadn't been for ebay. There's no Amoeba music or other great record stores where you can buy rare or used stuff here. When I went to LA last year, I returned with more than 20 new cd's and vinyls (you can't get vinyl anywhere here. Just online and every LP is like $100)

I do agree that it sucks that random people profit from this instead of the artist, though, but unfortunately I don't think there is much to do about it.

Have a good one, everyone!

Hi ylais & Chantelle,

RE: ticket scalping for The Darkness concerts & ticket scalping in general.

Scalping has been going on for years as I'm sure you are aware of. People should never be shocked to see tickets on sale at ebay or anywhere else. There is never going to be an end until the fans STOP buying from those scummy scalpers.

Remember, like so many other 'vices', while there are still consumers out there willing to buy the tickets at inflated prices, the scalpers will continue to sell them. It's like anything 'illegal'; if there weren't Buyers, there wouldn't be Sellers.

As for how the sellers get these tickets; there are so many ways: The scalpers have 'insiders' (usually the ticket vendors) who actually work at the venues, some scalpers get them from many other sources such as the actual band management etc. Some ask for tickets for charity give-a-ways then simply resell them. No wonder fans never get decent seats. The decent seats never make it to the sale window!

A close friend used to work as the Manager of performer accomodations at Radio City Music Hall in NYC, so I got to find out the real 'inner workings' of ticket distribution. Most venues have 'house seats', those are the seats which are usually offered to the employees. They aren't free, the employees must pay. Each employee is allowed between 2-4 tickets per concert. When you count that up, considering how many work there, that is a lot of seats never getting to the paying public! Especially considering that Radio City only holds about 5,000 people.

Their house seats are excellent, they are always within the first 10 rows. Funny enough, every RC concert my friend got me tickets for, I ended up with the SAME 2 seats, because those were the 'house seats' alloted to his department!

A 'plus' to holding house seats is the fact that most venues do release house seats to the public the day of the show. These are the seats which the employees didn't want & the bands management is releasing because they don't need them for their family or friends etc.

Pre-Ticketmaster & the Internet ticket sales, when tickets were actually pre-printed, colour coded by section & sold only at the venues, I actually had a ticket seller attempt to sell me seats all the way at the top of the large venue when he clearly had the closer orchestra seats in plain sight, a large stack right in front of me! I demanded he sell me the orchestra seats, I told him; "Are you saving those orchestra seats for your scalper friends??"

Ironically, that was the year that many ticket agents at Madison Square Garden were fired for selling thousands of tickets to known scalping 'agencies' in New York & New Jersey. That hardly made a dent because the scalping continues today.

I could tell you ALL my bad experiences trying to purchase decent tickets over my many years of attending gigs, but I'm sure they'd bore you. lol

Music fans basically have to stop giving the scalpers their business & hard-earned money. It would also help, if the bands themselves & their management, start taking more responsibility in this situation. Bands have to get more involved with how their tickets are distributed to the fans versus the large amounts of good tickets given to the record company, the bands management, the venue producers staff, the radio stations & others, such as MTV, who give desirable tickets away in contests.

A large venue such as Madison Square Garden (or even Wembley Stadium), literally holds back thousands of tickets for the record company & the others I've mentioned. This is standard practice for almost every concert. Of course, the tickets being held back aren't the bad seats, they are always the good ones.

Holding tickets back in such large numbers limits the amount of good seats getting out to the general public. They seem to forget that the fans are the people making the musicians 'rich & famous', NOT the people on the guest list getting free tickets. I've been to concerts where I've sat near people who had no clue who was on stage, they got their tickets free through a 'connection' & to them it was just a night out! Meanwhile, the real fans are outside paying scalpers big bucks for crap seats. They shouldn't be buying them but many fans feel they have no alternative, especially for a band they have been waiting to see for a long time.

Waiting on line for tickets with those silly numbered wristbands doesn't guarantee getting a good seat either. Ticket lotteries etc....there doesn't seem to be a guaranteed way of getting good seats. Many bands are now selling the best seats to their Fan Club members, which is yet another way of holding back even more seats from the public.

Just some of my ticket buying 'war stories'! I'm sure others here have their own tales to tell.

take care,
itanja

Big whoops...."Their house seats are excellent, they are always within the first 10 rows. Funny enough, every RC concert my friend got me tickets for, I ended up with the SAME 2 seats, because those were the 'house seats' alloted to his department!"

I should have said that my friends departments house seats were scattered throughout the first 10 rows. The department didn't have all 10 rows! LOL

The house seats for Radio City were scattered throughout the venue. It would be impossible to hold back only the first 10 rows just for the venue.

Hey, it's late & I'm still up!! Good Night!

Cant wait to check out the sounds from this lineup...
Quuick question: As an independant musician i am considering making the move from Boston to California with my wife and 3 children...is there any areas close to LA with a vibrant creative scene and opportunities that is also condusive to raising kids???
Best of luck recording next month and give perk a pat on the back for being such a pure and great drummer...

Astrid-A contest is a terrific idea!

Dave- Is the Fashion Rocks that you did with Usher, the same Fashion Rocks that is in my L.A. listings for tonight at 8 p.m.?

Are there pics of you in the print supplement that is being published?

Yikes, one more thing, GIRLS!!!! I read that presale tickets for Wiltern LA Camp Freddy concert are available at Ticketmaster online tomorrow.
Won't get started on my feelings about Ticketmaster, can I wait until Thursday, and still be able to get floor?

The ticket situation is scandalous these day's,i remember seeing J.A. in 2002 i think in the Forum in Kentish Town London and a girl next to me paid over £100 for her ticket,Dave you might remember your amp gave out at the end of 3 Days.

I saw RHCP in '92 for £12.50.those were the day's.

Merchandise at big gigs are overpriced too.
works out to an expensive night out.

These day's i just see the band i really want to see but i won't pay over the odds for my ticket.
Ultimately its the buyers choice to pay whatever is being asked for a ticket but it definately needs sorting out.
There was a programme on tv recently about this and one company were charging astronomical prices and the tickets and passes they supplied were fake, also booking for gigs that never exsisted.

itanja~ It's so strange to me that there are only seats at concerts in the US. Here there's always a pretty big mosh pit at the front, and some larger venues have seats in the back. That way, anyone who cares to get there early and wait in line can get to stand in the front.

When it comes to ticket scalping, I dubt that there is much to do about that. It's purely an issue of demand and supply. If a band that I adore comes here every 4 or so years, I dubt that any fan would let the fact that they're supporting ticket scalping keep them from going to the show. I had to get my ticket for last year's Jane's show through an online auction site, and although I paid more than $100 for it I was the happiest bunny on the block when I got the ticket.

Oh, and although I can see how frustrating it must be for you Americans to never get good seats at shows, let me tell you that the seats being held back sometimes do go to the fans. Some friends and I got 4th row seats to last year's Ozzfest through a musician friend, which was really nice of him :)
itanja, you should start a small scale revolution to get rid of having only seats at shows, that way you too could stand in the front and get rock-related bruises ;)

Have a good one, everyone!

Hi Chantelle,

I guess my post was geared towards venues with seats. Of course, not ALL the venues here in the US have seats, especially the halls in NYC. I was mostly refering to Madison Square Garden (which is a 20,00 seat indoor arena, having general admission there would be total chaos!), the Beacon Theatre, Town Hall, Carnegie Hall & other venues which still have regular assigned seating.

Irving Plaza, a very old venue, which was once a burlesque house then became a theatre which hosted theatrical plays, holds about 2,000 people. There is no seating there, except a small VIP section upstairs. They do sometimes allow fans to sit upsairs depending on the guest list that evening. It has a huge open dancefloor, stage at one end, bar in back at the other end. There is a lounge level also. Irving Plaza is not quite as big as the old Hacienda in England but you get the idea.

Even the dinner & concert venues such as B.B.Kings club in the Times Square area don't have assigned seating, there are tables, sort of booth seating & individual chairs, you just have to get their early to get a good seat. Even better for the venue if you get there early and have dinner & drinks! lol

Sorry for the confusion about the 'seating' issue. Of course, the other problem with no seating is when the venue over sells tickets & you ending up crushed for 2 hours.

take care,
itanja

Hi Dave and Family!

Finally back online after my move to Chicago... :D I gotta say I really missed all of you and I'm happier than happy to be back...

Gonna make this a quick one though... still unpacking all my junk and wondering just where the hell it all came from...

Hope everyone's well...

Much love and respect to Dave and the Family.

Peace,
