Frogs: Underwater Cats
Good morning. So, "Saturday In The Park" is a Chicago song? Nice. Anyway, we did that G-Phoria awards thing yesterday. We had a blast. A lot of it was really cool, some of it was really stupid and some of it just plain didn't work. It was my first time with scripted "banter" and to be honest... It's not really my bag. We did, however, have a great time and hung out with some really cool and interesting people. It was an odd mix because it was people like Jenna Jameson and Anna Nicole Smith on the same show with people who created games like Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear series. The funny thing is, after all was said and done, I never got to play Metal Gear 3 or Halo 2. I was just too busy. It was like a 12 hour day, but it was all good. At least I have Sunday off, Carmen is on her way to do another job this morning. That girl works harder than anyone I know. I could never handle being that busy and having to be "on" all the time. I am much too moody.
I am happy that so many of you like the name. We really love it. For those of you who don't, what can you do? I suppose you can't make everybody happy. So what does the name mean? Well, a lot of you got it right. I love the controlled chaos analogy and the Manson reference from Columbine. To a large degree those ideas are correct. As we have stated before, we also think of writing music as channeling. The actual definition of Panic includes words like terror and humor. A channel is also a conduit. A conduit of terror and humor. There is also the blatant state of affairs in the media analogy to be made. CNN, might as well be The Panic Channel. On the other hand, one could go with a more spiritual approach with the word channel or apply the word Panic to push it in a darker direction. I also like the post modern, pop art "TV" angle, as if one has tuned in. A network of the unimaginable or a place to channel fear. Electronics and the spirit world, the inherent duality. Someone posted that we should have called it E! which made me laugh, but it was already taken. I would love to hear from you for more interpretations. For those of you who hate it, do not feel alone as my wife had the same initial reaction. She has since been coming around.
I have been really digging all your posts, art and links. Many thanks to White Pony, FreAk and Kelli for the art, links and community vibes. (As I write this, Carmen has left for work and our little dog is crying. So heart breaking...)
The online jam. I suppose I really need to organize this a bit better. I have set up a temporary e-mail (that will later be destroyed... we WILL create a permanent e-mail) for submissions. I would say that we should start with loops and or drums. In order to keep it all somewhat organized, I will only be looking at the loopy files and will not be answering any questions from this address. I will then post three files at random and then we can vote one which one we collectively like. Perhaps someone can help me keep track of this when it comes time to vote. Hell, we could even work with all three. It is going to be a longshot, but I think it is worth it. Then, we put down a bass track, guitars, a vocal and when you have it the way you like it, I'll throw a solo or a part down too. I really hope that it works. I'd love to be a part of this but I encourage some of you to get going on other tracks together. I'll post the finished products. Hey, it's worth a shot. Should be fun. I have never tried anything like this so bear with me. Let's just see what happens. Either way, we all interact and that is what the net is about.
Answers to some questions in a little while. Coffee on an empty stomach... A recipe for irritability!
Love,
Dave

I think the name is pretty kickass :-) I always thought it'd be hard to read stuff off cue cards and those award shows too - who writes that stuff anyway? That's too bad you didn't get to play any games - maybe you can get them to send you some to test for them.:-)
Poor puppy, you giving her some attention now? Our dog cries whenever my mom leaves (he loves her best) He's a minature dachsund, called Karl.
I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's music on here - rock on. Have a good Sunday everyone.

Dave,
Personally, I don't care what you guys call it
as long as you are making music( I do dig the name though). I support you no matter what. Have a good cheat day.

Dave, there's just one thing I really wanted to know. Why the hell did you jump off stage in Amsterdam Paradiso? You could really have hurt yourself (I'm sure you did hurt yourself, but it could've been a lot worse). And you really scared the shit out of me.
The Panic Channel is a great name.
Take care.
Love and peace, Jenna.

Dave... i think u liked the 'controlled chaos' part of my analogy about Panic Channel, but i have 1 more analogy.
I think Panic Channel is a form of release. when someone panics, it is a form of release, the body overloads and expresses itself in the form of panic. therefor Panic Channel is a form or method of release to prevent overload! without a release(panic) normal functions would not occur!
hope that made sense? i hope you like my little analogy!

heLLo! All
Good to see u back here dave! Shame u cudnt play that metal gear solid 3! Oh well..guess we'll av to wait and see its release..!
In the meantime, thx for all the feedback (and u dave for posting it) about the Art I did on the Panic Logo. Never really thought u'd like that one..! Well u proved me wrong!
Congrats to whitePony and kelly for their work, this is really cool. Will av to take the time to av a better look, and sign up everything.
And for today, I've got a nice sound...I finished the recording I started in the studio (not supposed to say that...! ;-) ) of " Avoiding The Angel". This is a great simple/Very Complicated song! I never went before so deeply in all the sounds and the production this song requires! it's ART Dave! So I put as many layers, reversed intro, noiZes, processed drums, bass layers..etc!

1. "The Panic Channel" is a most righteous name, I'm surprised no-one else has used it before (: kind of makes me think of a sort of Disney-meets-Silent-Hill-meet-The-Outer-Limits, y'know?
2. Major props if you got to meet any of those game designer people.
3. Aww, poor doggie... our dogs ran away four days ago and still aren't back, I'm really quit shitting myself. The second they get back I'm nevr letting them out my sight, but your dog must get so much attention it's untrue (:
4. *cackles* you have AOL? welcome to the lower levels, man (;

hey guys, if you don't have the equipment to record music of your own, you could probably hook something up through hammerhead. It's a "rhythm station" and i've had some real fun with it. It's a free download at http://www.threechords.com/hammerhead/ and i recommend it to everybody, even those who do have the equipment. it's really fun to play around with it, i love it. there's also something called "LoopXchange" that we can use, it posts it on the hammerhead site, with a bunch of other people, i havent ever used it, so someone else can do some reseach on it.
i hope this helps, i think this will really help those of us who dont have the equipment and want to contribute.

The first images that came into my mind when I saw the name the Panic Channel were a few Twilight Zone type freaky things, and the Halloween movie where they have that wierd TV ad come on. I forget which Halloween that was. You know like it was taking over the tv, and influencing ppls minds. Guess there was an x-files episode along those lines too. I think more in images, but like the way you've eloquently described it.
Interesting about Panic as being a state where you are inspired, and that's a good thing versus Panic as overwhelming nervousness, hysteria, and something to be cured.
I've been getting more and more into John Frusciante's music and so I did think too of the channeling aspect.
I'm happy you mentioned him on here.
Great play on words, and ideas. I also though of PC being a joke like PC is politically correct=what you get on tv. really love this site. love to all.

Just love the name! and really love the symbol too.
This has probably been asked hundreds of times already, but where did the symbol come from?
Really like the analogy fo writing as channeling too! Can't wait for the music now!!
Just to dwell on the past for a moment ... somebody from another forum just showed me this pic and I was wondering if you could elaborate on the when, where and why it was taken ...
I guess Lolla sometime ... but it is so cool to see everybody in one pic just hanging out :-)

Hi Dave!
I read somewhere, once upon a time, that when you and Carmen went out on your first date she was a little taken aback because you had a shovel or ax or something strange like that between the seats of your car. Is that true? What was that all about? If true, I can just imagine the thoughts that might have gone through Carmens head! :D
Freak...every time I think you've done the coolest possible thing, you somehow manage to top it....very, very nice. You are really so talented!

Dave,
Hendrix, Page, Gilmour, Ash, Smith are your faves
BUT...
Back in the day, when you were into metal, who was your favorite shredder?
Another boring, cheesy, technique question, I know, but the metal background shows in your solid (and totally under-rated) rhythm playing.
Cheers!!!!

Wow!! i feel like i haven't posted in forever...even though it's been only 24 hours or so. so much to say
1. i think the panic channel is a great name...it's also a play on the term "PC" as in politically correct...so another interpretation and association with the media influence idea discussed earlier can be derived from that. and for those who don't like it...remember...according to the 2003 issue of spin...jane didn't like the band name Jane's Addiction...and it's constantly voted as one of the best band names ever...i'm personally psyched for the music as i always love something new and GOOD to get into
2. as for those who keep insisting that perry "made" dave navarro...are we forgetting that his talent drew perry to him? w/o dave and the others...perry would've been a great poet and that's it...the music of jane's is what speaks to me and moves me. that's all b/c of dave, eric/chris, and perkins...just as all of you claim perry "made" dave...dave made perry...it was a symbiotic relationship...and i hate how people blame dave for the break up of jane's...did anyone ever stop to think that maybe perry said "screw you guys...i'm going dj-ing"...don't point a finger in a situation you have no insight into...accept janes as a great band, enjoy their music, mourn their loss...but don't wag a finger without any direction
i think i'm done with my rant...i just hate when people try to pretend they know everything about something cause they read it on the internet (which is FULL of fallacious information)
just wanted to give my whole-hearted support on the new band, the band name, and say that i'm totally enamoured with everything you've done thus far and that i anticipate it getting better as time goes along!

thanks so much.

Dave,
Sorry to hear about the jane's addiction breakup. I was backstage at the DC Lollapalooza show last summer with Chris and you all were great! We grew up together and I just moved back to CA. Could you pass the memo on to Zaney Chaney (aka "Ron J.") to look up his old, old, old friend Erica (Eureka Anne) in Santa Barbara when you next see him? THX and I wish you all the best with the new band.
Peace,
Erica

Dave,
I was rereading the article that first intoduced you to me. The article from the July 2001 Spin Magazine which contains excepts from the upcoming book. The article mentions the Spread video you were making which evently gave you a reason to live. Is there any chance we can ever see this video. It is after all the one thing that saved our hero.
Also I am wondering if now that you are clean if you are allowed back at the playboy mansion?

Hi Dave!
Was the "Goodbye" scene (from before you went on tour) on TDDUP staged? Some fans think MTV made you film that (after you had already returned) to help tie the story together. There are quite a few clues that support this theory. Would you like to come clean?

Dave... I'm lovin' the flash on the PC site! I keep replaying it, 'cause it's just that cool...
As for other interpretations of the name... I'm so with you on what you've posted. I'm also liking the PC analogy... as in Personal Computers... because, depending on how you use them... they also have their channels to fear, inspiration, terror, spirituality, etc.
By the way... found some cool software that might be useful with the cyber-jam project... it's free unless you want to buy plug-ins...

VERY IMPORTANT ARTICLE TO READ:
"Mini Revolution: EPs are emerging as the secret weapon for artists like Maroon 5 and Metallica" by David Browne
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY 8/6/04 (Tom Cruise/Jamie Foxx on the cover)
the link is not up on ew.com yet but this is something you guys should really consider...
"The EP has never been an especially satisfying configuration: It lacks both the ambitious sweep of an album and the heady rush of a single...Suddenly, though, the EP has returned & this time with a more market-friendly reason for being. Generally containing anywhere between four & eight songs & costing less than a full CD, it's ideal for an era in whic the song, not the album, rules. (Sorry, Yes and Coheed and Cambria fans.) A batch of fresh EPs demonstrates how this vintage format is being newly exploited for the ADDD (audio digital deficit disorder) age..."
which then investigates:
"EP AS STOPGAP" grade: B+ (for Damien Rice)
"EP AS CONCERT SOUVENIR, ESPEC. OF INTIMATE SHOWS YOU MISSED" grade: B (for My Morning Jacket; C for Maroon 5)
"EP AS MOVIE SOUVENIR" grade: C (for Metallica)
"EP AS EXPERIMENTAL WAY STATION" grade: B+ (for Rufus Wainwright)
...definitely a worthy read for musicians wondering what approaches may be successful & effective ways of appealing to a wide fanbase

The Panic Channel definitely is a frightening name I'm sure that's due to the CNN comparison you brought up (I would have said Fox News Channel though haha no offense, of course)...but in all seriousness, congratulations. I'm glad things are really working out & seem to be on the right path.
I dunno a writer by the name of Jay Woodruff in the current Entertainment Weekly refers to the USA's ridiculous FCC agenda as the "United States of Hysteria" & I couldn't agree more.
My point being-- I dunno I guess it's just The Panic Channel reminds me of the "United States of Hysteria", not regarding the FCC but just the general state of affairs & this horrible administration's effect on our information sources.
I'm sorry my perception of current events is blinding my artistic judgement and tolerance for your band's name. I know, I suck. But hopefully like Carmen, I will come around to appreciating the band in due time...
Posted by: Ellen at August 2, 2004 03:56 AM
I guess my disgusted notion of the administration's effect on our information sources turns me off to 'panic channels' & maybe that's why i don't like the association with some great musicians i admire...
sorry to be dramatic, but that is the interpretation i'm coming up with

PS EVERYONE GO SEE "GARDEN STATE"! It's an amazing movie...definitely what "Lost in Translation" could have/should have been if the characters' lives were examined more closely...I really dug LIT but now I really don't feel that way...Garden State is incredible...mark my words, if Zach Braff is not up for any Oscar nods, I'm leaving the moviemaking business forever! (i work for a hollywood producer right now, among other side projects)

Hey Dave, i know what you should do as far as releasing your music...
Revive SPREAD ENTERTAINMENT as a record label (remember when you were going to release Metal Machine Music on your own label for charity?). Get a distribution deal with one of the majors (BMG, Sony, etc...) and you're set. That way, you can sell on your website AND get it around the world to all your fans far from the USA.
If Pearl Jam can do it, so can you guys.

Hey Dave...
So, being that I love my tv shows...I record Charmed so I can watch it again...and I just watched the episode you were in Dave.
Playing at the club...it was great...thats the first time I feel in love with your music...anyways...
just one quick question about it...
Did you like doing something like that, where you are playing at a club within a television show? Is it a good way of promotion or do you think it makes it seem a little unreal?
Just wondering...anyways

I watched 'the rise & rise of Marilyn Manson' on TMF last night and was quite surprised the he played football for his school team, I would never have thought MM would have been intrested in team sports. So my question is are you into any team sports, if so who do you support?
p.s. didn't like the name at first but it's starting to grow on me.

Hello, DAVE!
Hello, Community!
I´m very excited about our musical project, but since I´m a singer I´ll probably contribute to it a little later by adding my mean howlos and sexy whispers to the final mix... However, I have already started writing some lyrics.
Here they are:
DEAD STARS
The stars look so beautiful tonight, I said
“Yeah, but don’t you know that most of them are gone,
they’re dead?
And that’s how she started to murder my dreams
But it’s true, I reasoned
maybe she didn’t want to hurt me at all
it’s just a fact
like “fire burns or “tears will fall
Most stars are dead,
It’s true I saw it on TV
It was on the Panic Channel or on Discovery
Stars are so far away that
by the time their light reaches our planet
they are already dead
Kinda like my feelings for this woman
and the things I meant to say
By the time they finally reached her
it would be much too late
We didn’t kiss that night
I went home by myself
I couldn’t stop thinking I was walking under dead stars
As I passed my own fuckups, my own regrets
And cheap hotels and topless bars…
Couldn’t stop thinking to myself that I was also dead
Too much nada inside my stomach,
too many thoughts inside my head
But there was a insatiable hunger too,
not only pain
And that meant I was very much alive
and maybe – just maybe
I could try it all again
And so I did as I rose from my ashes
And fell again
And swam and lived and died
Through an ocean of pain
Most stars are dead
It’s a simple fact
But still I must have done the resurrection act
At least a billion times
I redo it when I’m singing
I’m reborn in every rhyme
Most stars are dead
It’s a simple fact
But what that bitch didn’t know is that
Their light is pretty much alive
Sometimes it burns
In all I see
It’s always burning in my mind
It just won’t let me be
So maybe she should have studied the sky a little longer
Maybe I could have been a little stronger
It doesn’t matter anymore...
I’m thankful to be what I am today
And for the wonders I have seen
(Although I don´t remember half the places where I’ve been)
I’m thankful for the pain
For the light, for the shadow,
for the sun and for the rain
And for the bipolar ride that made me what I am today
It’s all good, it’s all part of the game
And the truth that’s in my bones
Can’t be taken away
Blessed I am with fire
That burns both hot and cold
Besides…
There are new stars being born this very moment
Or so I’ve been told…

OKAY, now I´d like some help with editing these words. Or maybe you guys wanna add something to them? It´s all good, go ahead. Also, are the parts that are supposed to rhyme REALLY rhyming? lol
Don´t forget, I am "creado I regalo de Rio de Janeiro" (although I live in São Paulo) and English is NOT (I reapeat!) NOT my first language. So any help would be much appreciated.
Also - what should the chorus be? Maybe we will all figure it all later.
OK, I already plan to write more lyrics, just please give me some feedback so I can know if I´m in the right direction or not - okay, peeps?
And what do you think, DAVE? I´m very curious about your opinion. Be mean if you have to... lol ;O)
Much love, respect and gratitude from
Luiz.

hi all again. hola!
so we could see the Panic Channel as Dave taking over tv, nay the world! :D
okay, attempting to be more serious now:
1)Dave, which Charmed episode were you on? I have never seen that episode.?(maybe I missed it, or because I'm in the UK it hasn't been aired?) I would love to see that.
2)White Pony's site is cool. White Pony, I left a message, I just remembered I was Little White Pony, it's totem animal reference. I suppose I still am, but I don't go telling people about my involvement with those matters much anymore. Has yours got anything to do with that type of thing?
3)and Dave does your White Unicorn have anything to do with that?
4)I just caught Flea in a film on TV in Psycho, as Bob Summerfield I screamed out "It's Flea It's Flea!". Yet another coincidence, because I swear I usually steer clear of the TV! but these past two weeks have had lots of related coincidences in them. Are you guys still good friends? Any thoughts about them playing at the convention, well I hear they did..I'm in UK remember!
5) The Venus in Furs video, wow! Where did the image ideas come from in that?
cutting myself short, because i could ask tons of questions.
