A Great Time

ness7We had a great time last night at the station. Cheers to Colleen for calling in. That was killer. We start up as a band again this week as Chaney returns from his session in Vancouver. It has felt like two months that he has been gone.

1. Hey Dave do you like guitar virtuoso guys like malmsteen , vai and Michael Angelo?

Sure I do, it's kind of like guitar porn.

2. Dave, do you like camping?

I'm not really a big camper. I need electrical outlets.

3. Is there a guitar only version of "fighter"? Id love to hear the solo but its turned down in the mix.

No, I don't have one.

4. Dave, are you a spiritual person? Do you believe in a higher power?

I try to be and I do. My higher power is one of my understanding. I pray on a daily basis.

5. Hey, what is the longest you've been without sleep (and perhaps why)?

When I was doing a lot of drugs, I think I did an 11 day stretch. Thank God those days are over. I average between 6 and 8 hours a night.

6. With your experience, is this a good way of copywrite? Or how do you protect your music with copywrite issues/keeping fresh ideas safe?

I heard somewhere that if you send your ideas in the mail to yourself, the postmark acts as a temporary copyright, provided you don't open the package. Look into it before you take my word on it. I have always been bad about that. Thank God the people I work with are so on top of things.

7. Dave, when you started out in music, did you or your bands ever get any harsh criticism that made you think, "Damn, maybe I should just quit now" or "Hell, Im not good enough, Im wasting my time" ???

I have definitely felt that way, but I would never quit. I just have too much fun doing it. That IS what it's about. Doing something creative that you enjoy.

8. Curious as to how you reacted to Guitar World (I think) claiming your guitar style to be as original as that of The Edge. Compliment? No?

I never saw that but I do see it as a compliment for sure. The Edge is just incredible!

9. When will 6767.com visitors be able to hear a sample of "The Panic Channel", even a work in progress?

We have had the last week off, but we are going to film our rehearsals next week. Maybe I can put up a clip soon.

10. I got a cold and I gotta perform tonight... How do you handle sickness on tour? This sucks...

You just have to deal... "The show must go on." I'll bet a song or two into it, you won't even remember you feel sick.

Have a great Sunday...

hey again

i've got your instructional video (which is hilarious by the way.. cracks me up! but the interviewer guy just doesn't seem to get anything!) and i was just wondering what you use the turbo distortion for? is it to get a bit more gain for solos or as part of your basic distorted sound?

and i have to express great thanks to whitepony for posting that deconstruction album. my copy went missing (i lent it to somebody..) and it was great to hear those songs again.

keep on truckin' everybody!

ok.. so a nick change.. psycho was too way out there...

Hey Dave, you got any nicks you care to share with us?

I continue with setting up my tribute site to Dave. Once I can find a decent host and I don't think it will be private, but still I look. Just a hint... think of "blackholetonowhere".

All of this I have seen and read on all the pages has got me itching to start to play again.. after a long layoff.. My Gibsons could not be more pleased at that.. they get to be played again... anyways.. just a quick note cos I have some company here, but had to slip away to the comp for a bit.

you've mentioned that you liked the book "wasted" by marya hornbacher and i also hear you make a few comments during your wedding planning that pertained to food and eating. do you or have you ever had an eating disorder or body image issues (aside from what would be considered "normal" appearance consciousness for a celebrity)?

Posted by: cristine at August 8, 2004 11:18 AM

wow those CFR clips are pretty cool...way to go colleen.. i keep missing that show!

Dave to let ya know, my mother was obsessed with Til Death to Us Part (yah, she watches way to much MTV-she's starting to use slang too, i caught her saying "bling" and "hardcore"). Well on the night of the season finale there was a huge storm and all the power went out right before it was going to start... and the very first thing that she says (screams) "OH MY GOD... DAVE AND CARMAN!!!! AHHH..."
i thought that was pretty cute

Aw...I missed it...what happened next??? Does anyone have the whole clip???

Very nice of you to say Hi to everyone Dave....even though I'm not one of the "kids" here I enjoyed hearing the clip all the same!

That's awesome Colleen got through - props to her! Nice one girl.:-)

I need electrical outlets too - I'm roughing it when I have to be at a horse show for a few days (heat and horses isn't a great mix)

I can't think of a good question, so everyone have a good Sunday - I'm enjoying my last few weeks of summer (college is looming!)

Wow, I missed the show and the chat (had a gig), but that's so cool Colleen that you got through. And FreAk, thank's for hooking the rest of us for who couldn't be there. I've gotta say that everyone on this board blows me away. Everyone's so open and creative, and a couple of you that I've talked to have been so helpfull in helping me get my music stuff hooked up to my computer(props to skot and kev). Hopefully that will be done soon. Dave I'm so looking forward to hearing the new stuff. So when The Panic Channel heads out on tour, can we expect some Jane's at your shows? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!

Posted by: Shane at August 8, 2004 12:43 PM

Oh yeah and thank's to white pony for the deconstruction album. I lost mine in a break up.

Posted by: Shane at August 8, 2004 12:46 PM

Hey Colleen... way to go! :)

Thanks to FreAk for posting the shout out and the acoustic clips, too! I was heading into MSN Chat right after I heard Colleen and my computer decided to crash on me... spent the rest of the night fixing it. :( Maybe my next computer will be a Mac...

Thanks to Dave for the shout out to the community, too. :) That was so cool!

Gear question: Dave, have you (or any of the other guitarists in the community) tried out the Digitech RP100 modeling processor? I'd love to get some opinions on it. I'm either going to get that or a Line6 POD later this week.

Have a great Sunday everyone...

Peace,
Tim

Dave, Why dont you answer questions about Jane's?
Like the ones people have been asking about unreleased tunes from Strays....Inquiring minds want to know.

Dear Mr. Dave Navarro,
I am an aspiring screenwriter. I wrote a script that I think you would be perfect for. I live in Mexico, but will be in the L.A. area on August 23rd to register my script. I was wondering where I could drop off/send you a copy of my script. I would love for you to go throught it and tell me what you think. Hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Maria Martinez

To nitewing:

The Pod is THE choice for Amp Modelling. Get the new Rack version, called Pod XP Pro. U won't be disapointed..

Another interesting option, is the new generation of Fender Amp, called the CyberTwin. (shud arrive soon in our office, so will tell u more about it at that time). CyberTwin models all amps (especially the Fender ones, perfect!) and have motorised knobs..so when u change preset, all of them are turning to their new settin..Funny and efficient..lol

Otherwise, u could try out the Marshall Mode four...Powerfull enof...
If u wanna chat about it, u're more than welcome to hit me on the 6767Msn

Enjoy!

Catlin,

I tried to email you but got bounced. If you are getting the "double post" issue - try using another browser. I am on a Mac and while I dig Safari, it has limitations sometimes. Give firefox or camino a shot. I love firefox.

Thanks Steve, I'll try that. Sorry the email bounced, I may have typed it in incorrectly - highly possible when it comes to my typing.:-)

Hey Tim, I've got to agree with Freak... go with the Pod. I haven't tried the Digitech RP100, but Line 6 has really created an awesome little treasure. Go with the Pod, you won't be sorry!

Have any of you ever used a "Vortex" by Lexicon? It's an Audio Morphing processor, and it's one of the best little toys that I've ever plugged my guitar into! They don't make them anymore, but they're probably out there somewhere used... actually, maybe not because I can't imagine anyone wanting to sell one of these little treasures! :)

Well guys, its been a pretty rough day. I am relizing alot of things about myself after period of inner reflection.

Today I sat down to play some playstation and found out it wasn't there. Someone I know has stolen it. I don't get much time to play it, so I have no idea how long its been gone.

I just finished watching the movie "Prefontaine". Anyone seen it? I always watch movies where the underdog with heart always pulls it out. Slightly different twist on this movie.

I am coming to the realization that I am simply average. I am good at many many things, but never number 1. I know you guys don't know me that well, but anyone ever felt like this?

Not sure what I am looking for... just thoughth i'd post what I was feeling and see if anyone had any words of wisdom or pick me ups.

Anthony aka Pony

man, i just got news that another family friend committed suicide. it seems like every week theres a new tragic story of a young kid that has died. especially with the native american reservations around here, theres always a story about a 12 year old kid who died of alcohol poisoning a mile or something outside of the res (because they are not allowed to have alcohol on the reservation, but as soon as you walk out there are like 5 shops). just a few months ago, when it was still really cold here, there was a story of a 14 year old boy who got drunk, passed out on the side of a lake, and froze to death overnight. i'm not trying to scare anyone, but man, im just tired of fucking funerals. a couple really close friends killeed themselves within a week about a year ago. i dont think i can take this shit anymore. i just have to keep thinking about the future and tell myself this is happening for a reason. maybe i should stop reading the obituaries and just cry about the stories i hear. anyway, everyone have a good one.

Posted by: paperdove at August 8, 2004 04:58 PM

I've gotta agree with a lot of the people here and say that i'm totally in awe of the talent that many people here possess (especially Freak!! i lovee your stuff man! oh!! and you too luiz!). I wish i could be as creative as the people here, but alas, i can't, but i enjoy living vicariously through them. keep up the great work guys

and i've seen prefontaine (the one with jared leto...i used to have a huge thing for him so i saw every movie he was in lol.) it's a great movie!

and colleen...you sound so adorable on the phone...i can't believe you got through...i'm a little envious lol. did they get your number and call you back? just wondering

just wanted to get those few things said lol. and dave...once again thanks for the shout out!! it made me, and i'm sure a whole lot of people here, feel special and it's nice to know that we all belong to something that gets notice and admiration from someone we all admire ourselves! thanks once again!

Hey guyz.....just to let u's know I'm thinking of u..this life is one big learning experience, I know first hand how suicide can tear a family apart, what u have to understand is that it's a selfish act, they really do believe that we will be better off without them. Day by day is all u can do, there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about my brother...but I know he wasn't thinking about that when he decided to end his young life. Always have to think positive no matter how hard it is...it will get u thru!!!!!!! Take Care and God Bless

Dave

I recall in one ep of "till death" when Carmen & you were sitting with your Father & what I think is your step mom. You were talking about how you were not sure about inviting some of your family from your mothers side because they were not close with you after she passed. Something like that when you prolly needed them most they were not there but now that your on mtv they are all calling. Could you elaborate a bit on that & what was the out come cause they showed much of Carmens family but only a few shots of your father & you. BTW what line of work is your old man in? Seems like hes a pretty interesting guy. Guess the apple doesnt fall far from the tree.

White Pony, I totally get what you're feeling. I often feel the same way. It's like, a jack of all trades, master of none, and that makes it very hard to get a true sense of satisfaction from your accomplishments. However, not being "the best" doesn't necessarily mean that you're "average". It simply means that you're human. Realistically, who is ever "the best"? There's always room for everyone to improve.

When the subscribers of the Spread list had shirts made years ago, we chose a quote for the back that is truly awesome... it not only sums up what you're feeling, but it's quite inspiring as well:
"The greater the artist, the greater the doubt. Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize."

Think about it.

Warm fuzzies to ya,
Deena

Posted by: Deena at August 8, 2004 06:54 PM

Paperdove... sending you huge hugs. May not help much, but I'm a huggy kinda guy, so yeah. :)

I know how it feels when someone takes the suicide route. I also know how it feels to be on the other side of the coin, thinking it's your only way out, as I made the attempt myself about 20 years ago. The only thing I can tell you is... yes, things happen for a reason, whether we know the reason or not. Hurts like hell when this kind of thing happens, too. Just know there are people that might not know you too well, but we're here and we care just the same.

Pony... I think most people are pretty much "average". Of course, that's a subjective term, depending on what you use for comparison. But so-called "average" people do extraordinary things, too.

I think everyone feels the way you're feeling at some point, and I know I have. I finally figured out that, while I may never be "Number 1", I can be the best I can possibly be at what I enjoy the most. I can strive to become a better person and focus my energy on the things that make me happy, like my music and my painting. Doing that, I will get better and better at those things and will eventually excel in at least one of them.

You know your talents (and from what I've seen, you do have talents) and you know what you enjoy... what makes you happy. Focus on those things, develop those skills as much as you can. Eventually, you'll excel in at least one of them.

Hope that helps. :)

Deena... thanks for the advice on the POD. I haven't been playing guitar long, so I don't know a lot about gear, but I'm thinking I'm going to listen to you and FreAk and go that route. If I'm gonna spend the money, I want something that's worth it, you know?

Peace,
Tim

I totally know how you feel Anthony, I get that a lot too. My parents are both high achievers, and they've reached a level I don't think I'll ever attain. If it makes you feel better, I always look for your posts, as I feel they are far from average. You seem like a cool guy, so just keep going. You'll do awesome, don't worry. Most people who don't think much of themselves tend to be the really cool people, whereas people who think they're awesome are usually overestimating.

Love to paperdove, I can't imagine how much that hurts.

I saw Fahrenheit 9/11 again with my family tonight (3rd time for me.) It vwas the first time my dad had seen it, and he was really affected by the 9/11 footage. It hit especially hard for him as he lives and works in NY. Anyway, it made me realize that we all have to vote this November - do your part guys! We need to hear everyone's voice.

Hey Nitewing, just throughing my two cents in. The POD XT is absolutely the way to go, It blows digitech out of the water. And don't take my words for it, I got to spend a couple of hours with Eddie Kramer (jimi hendrix, led zepplin)earlier this year and he said if you can't afford to buy all those amps that the Line 6 gear is unbelievable. And he has no endorsment from them at all. I sit a Flextone II next to a JCM800 for gigs and you really can't tell.

Posted by: Shane at August 8, 2004 07:58 PM

Whitepony...i've visited your site (i'm currently working on that thank you thing where people are posting pics and what 6767 means to them) and if anything you're really talented at running a website of such magnitude...you accomplished getting a FAQ page together...if anything...i think your real talent lays in keeping your word...you say you're going to do something and you do it...that's very rare to find today. so you excel at being human and kind! at least that's what i derive from your postings. and remember...if you're at the top...there's only one way left to go...and you don't want to crash and burn. sometimes i think it's better to be well rounded rather than good at just one thing. that way you can adapt to any situation. that's just my two cents though. i hope you feel better...and i really hope that you can see that you are a good person and that's what really matters

and paperdove...i feel for you...i really do...i wish there was something i could do to ease your pain...but all i can offer are words of condolences and a prayer that things do get better. i do have a belief in everything happening for a reason, and i hope that reason is worth the pain. once again...i'm truly truly sorry.

and Kyle above is right...this community is really turning into a family type unit...and it's good that even though we're all basically strangers, we offer love and support to each other...it makes me really proud to say i'm a part of it

hey i just wanted to say hi to all of the Unicorners.....
paperdove, i've never had a real close experience regarding suicide so i can't relate... that only means i wont be able to do much more than just say i feel for you, honest.
pony, what can i say? the fact that you're here really says something about you (something GOOD, as you're neither a hater nor a FAQ asker... more like a FAQ Answerer!). Still, i was once taught by this very wise, very young man, that oh fuck i'll just post this in spanish, if anybody can translate it, that'd rock, if not (and i get lots of WTF??, ill try to translate it lo mas fielmente posible)
At least, that's what i get to see from my pc. i might be wrong, i dunno...

well after all this, what else can i say, other than I LOVE YOU GUYS!!
it's great to be in such a NONplace, filled with love and understanding and respect. And unicorn pics, AND sexcrazed internet maniacs!

thats it

cya!

Employees Must Wash Hands
Posted by in10sity on May 20, 2004 01:31 PM Filed under: Et Cetera, Et Cetera: Humor and Satire

One of my favorite things about going out to eat is using the bathrooms so I can see the "Employees Must Wash Hands" sign. I love that sign. It's hangs up there as though that is really the last thought that I wanted to be thinking about right before I went back to my table to eat. Sometimes I wonder if there are people who see this sign and then go back to their table feeling much safer about eating their food. "Well, this food must be ok to eat. I'm sure the employees are washing their hands... after all, I did see that sign up in the bathroom. And they DID have it hanging right next to the sink, so, it would have been pretty hard to miss. Ok, so none of the employees actually speak english... but I'm sure they can still READ english, right? Yeah, it's ok... let’s eat!"

Sometimes I wonder what could have possibly caused this sign to be put up in the first place. I think the scariest situation involving this sign would be if you went out to eat and didn't see a sign hanging in the bathroom, but then went back to the same place a week later, and now there was a sign hanging up. What caused that sign to be put up all of a sudden? Did employees not have to wash their hands last week? Is this a new policy effective today? You don't want to get caught in the "employees must wash hands" sign transition.

I think I'd rather just assume that the employees are washing their hands instead of thinking that this sign is now up there because at one time they apparently weren't. I also like the idea that instead of firing these cooks and hiring clean ones, they just put up a sign reminding them to do it. "Yeah so listen guys, we have gotten some complaints about urine in the food. However... I'm not gonna fire you... I'm just gonna put this sign up. So, try to remember if you can."

I like how demanding the wording of the sign is. "Employees MUST wash hands!" They must! I wonder what the very first sign said before they decided on this as the official sign wording. "Employees, if you get a chance, wash your hands." "Employees, if you have an extra second or 2, please use soap." "Employees, if it was a #2, MUST wash hands... #1's are optional."

Isn't the "employees must wash hands" sign a little insulting to the employees? Are they really so stupid that they need this sign? Maybe they need other signs then too. "Employees must turn knob before pushing door." "Employees must move legs in order to walk." If the employees are dumb enough to actually need this sign, then what are the chances that they are smart enough to even know how to read it? Well, I guess that explains why some signs look like this: http://img56.photobucket.com/albums/v172/in10sity/wash.jpg

Dave.. Could you please give me some sort of sign to know you readed this?

my god, guys. i can't even believe how great you all are. thank you for your kind words, they truely help. i'm not even that sad about this anymore, which is kind of the sad thing. it's just so miserable here, maybe ill just pack as much of my shit into the back of my car, take off and never come back.

And Nitewing, i've been there too, ive blatantly tried to kill myself a couple times, plus way back when, when i was doing so many fucking drugs that it pretty much counted as a suicide attempt. anyway, i just wanted to say thanks to everybody here for being so open. sincerely, i thank you. pat on the back to colleen for getting in last night, youll have to tell me about it later.

ok well thanks again everybody, have a good evening.

hey pony, i just got a chance to go back and read all the earlier posts, and i wanted to say that everybody has been there. well maybe not EVERYbody, but just about. but you know what, who says someone is number one? what makes them the best? there is always someone better. pony, no worries man, we've all been there. find something to take your mind off of it, and when you come back from whatever you decided to do, you will feel much better, trust me.

ill talk to you guys later, im off to a party, which will probably be kind of grim, because he (the guy who hung himself) was a good friend of the person who's throwing the party. oh well, all i can do is be there for them and support them.

again, have a good evening everyone.

A rough translation of Fleipe's kind words...

A very young but very wise friend said that once, I teach myself that life is not to be better than others, but of being as good as you can be... To know your limitations is the single first step, then it is soon to break them, and to continue growing. I do not believe that you are an average person but a talented person that it looks for very different, creative ways to reach out. At least, that's what i get to see from my pc. i might be wrong, i dunno...
(its not perfect, so if anyone can make it more clear...)

Anthony, I have to say that there is nothing average or mediocre about you. Your an intelligent and kind person, and you put massive effort into what you do. You are dedicated and you work hard, so give yourself a break. Most amazing people are never known by the masses, and most people have not had the opportunity to be amazing by the age of 23. Take time for yourself, meditate (or just spend some time relaxed, quiet and alone), and just allow yourself to feel what your going through. A lot of times we try to hide or "forge through" without giving ourselves time to truely understand how we feel. You are an artist...write down your feelings and create something...as you know it can be very theraputic.
*warm hugs*
feel better :)

Everyone,

Thank you... this is the best group of people anyone could ever ask for. Your kind words mean more than you know. I guess sometimes its hard to see when human qualities are your strong point. Its easy to see works or tangible things but traits are difficult to quantify.

This shows so much about the character about this "family". I like the mafia reference for one reason. We all have each other's backs.

So thank you... everyone for the words. I am still pretty pissed about someone I know stealing my PS2, but that I can live with... it is just stuff. I still have my guitars and my health.

I'll talk to all you msn peeps tommarrow. And for those not on MSN... GET ON IT!

And send me some more bios!

Peace, Love, and Dave Navarro.

Pony... it's in the Frogs: Underwater Cats post from Dave...

Shane... thanks for the input on the POD. Definitely gonna pick that one, I think. Sounds like what I'm looking for.

I promise I'll make it to the 6767MSN.

Pony... I'll go check out your lyrics before I head to bed...

Much love to the rest of the Unicorn family, and much love to Dave, because you all seriously ROCK. :D

Peace,

Hey Dave & Friends!!

So Dave guitar porn eh!?...cool! I chatted to Dimitri from Burning Brides after their show in Leeds just before they played Lollapalooza (or rock'n'roll summer camp as he described it) and he was saying how much he was looking forward to getting the chance to meet Perry and yourself. Did he get his wish and did you check out their set?

Pony, having checked out your site and read some of your poems/lyrics I have to say you are a talented guy and remember the average often astound while the 'superior' often disappoint.

Peace

Matt ;O)

Posted by: acacia at August 9, 2004 09:07 AM

Hi Dave, this is my first posting here, although I am a frequent lurker and a long time fan of yours.

I think you have a fantastic site and it's good to see someone so dedicated to it. Some pretty damn awesome people here also, hi everyone!

I just want to ask one (of many!) question, what was it like playing on stage with Michael Jackson?

Hey Fam!

Sorry to hear your sad news Paperdove, I have been through this a few times myself with friends ending their lives unexpectedly, I'm sending you a HUG as words don't really cover it.

Whitepony we all feel this way at some time or other in our lives, you can only do your best and well, we all think your pretty special.

A question for Dave, the lyrics " I wanna taste your saliva, I wish that you were my daughter, I wish that I was your father, we could keep secrets."
I must admit the first time I heard this it kinda disturbed me a little, as it conjured up some dark memories, can you give me your take on what you meant.

Cheers!
Kirsty x
