Sunday...
Sunday. Good morning. Last night was a blast, we had the Suicide Girls on the show. Damn, they are adorable! Anyway, enjoy the rest of the day, I'm just chillin at home with my wife. Peace be unto you:
1. What was the first song you learned to play?
I honestly do not remember.
2. Being Hispanic was it anymore difficult to break into the business?
Well, I have never tried any other way, but I would have to say, no.
3. Dave, ever play with D/s relationships?? The Domme in me thinks you're a switch at heart. Am I wrong??
If you are saying what I think you are saying, then yes I have. Always on the s-side.
4. My cover of Sunny Days is online! Hope u'll enjoy it as much as I do!
Thank you FreAk, very well done. You are one talented Mother F@!%er!!!
5. Which famous LA band would you rather see on a reunion tour: The original Guns n' Roses lineup or Van Halen w/David Lee Roth?
Well, I am so down with the VR boys I would have to say VH/DLR.
6. Hey, freak... SUNNY DAY sounds good... can I sing in it?
That would be awesome if you guys stared making art together via the Internet! How cool would it be to make music and art between people who have never met! I would support anything you guys would want to do like that. Might be nice to create a link of everybody's work.
7. What's your favorite brand of coffee (home brew) to get the day started?
Starbuck's French Roast.
8. I'm having problems getting through with any of my songs, all I end up with are scraps.
Think of the "scraps" as seeds... They will eventually grow into whatever they are supposed to be.
9. Did you and Carmen get the new tats? Where are they?
We got our wedding date. 11-22 She went with the lower wrist and I went with the collar area.
10. I am wanting to know if the "I've got your unicorn right here b**ch" picture of u is real???
Why, whatever do you mean?
11. Does addiction run in your family?
It does. My advice to you is to do something about it before it gets out of hand. If you are recognizing a problem, there probably is one. Take action. As for what kind of action, that is up to you. There is all kinds of help out there. Find something that suits you.
love,
Dave

i wholeheartedly believe addiction is a genetic trait. so many people in my family suffer from an addiction of some sort..although i personally believe that anything is an addiction, be it television, food, or drugs...technically everything is a drug. that's just my opinion though.
i'm glad you seem so happy and that you're making music. you make me very happy in general...so thank you for touching my life :-D.
much love and respect...Emily

Thank you, Dave.
Yes, that was what I meant. Now I have more questions, but I'll spare you.
I also agree addiction. Being aware of yourself and your family seems to be a good way to avoid falling into that nightmare.

By the way Dave, is Carmen improving her drums play?? I wud say yes! S.Perkins and u as teachers...Not bad at all! Posh..! ;-)
I'd fancy a PRS camo, but cant find one anywhere at the moment! Is it because it's not commercially realised yet? Dave or someone here might know...! Coz even my guitar dealer cant get any info about it..Thanx anyway.
Talkin about PRS...what about a Kustom6767....Enjoy..!

Hey dave. i hear you're still looking for a band name. Mind if I throw 'wooden horse' into the hat? .. it's the name of my old band from 10 years ago. If you want the name it's yours aye aye.

Rain, you're not dumb at all.
My question was rather personal and asked in a way that people would hopefully not understand for the sake of Dave's modesty. Also because there seem to be some younger people here and I have no desire to shock anyone.
D/s is a kind of interpersonal relationship.
If that was not enough answer for you and you really want to know, e-mail me and I'll try to explain without being too shocking.
Posted by: Cookie at July 25, 2004 05:52 PM
Thank you cookie I think I might just do that.

Anything you play on seems to be the best in music! You have changed my life without ever meetoing me! Just thought I would let you know that!!

*******Dave***** I have a special request.***** I've told you before, but my son is also a fan of yours, and his birthday is Tuesday the 27th, he will be 13. Can you please post a happy birthday message to him? His name is Joe, and he is learning to play guitar. He saw you on AMW, and I could tell he was impressed even more by you, so whether you want to be a role model or not, it seems you are.
I would appreciate it soooo much, I won't ask you any more questions for a whole week!!!

i'm so sorry dave i know this "Sunny Day" thing has been beaten to death and i don't know if this question had been asked but i had to find out since that song means a lot to me.
Why did you write Sunny Day?..like what brought it on?

Dave--have you guys come up with longer songs or jams that might make it on the CD?
Not expecting "Close to the Edge" or "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida" or anything like that but maybe an 8 or 10 minute "epic"????
Hope you're feeling it, your guitar solos are beautiful, please don't cage them!
Thanks brother!!!!
Love and peace to Freak, "Sunny Day" was sweet.

I would like to second Kevin's statement about the epics. I loved "3days" and "then she did". How come there are no epics on Strays Dave?

Hey, I'm really liking the lower weight/higher reps. routine for a change of pace. It seems to be paying off combined w/ the no carbs. after 3 p.m. rule. It was tough the first few days, especially the latter and cutting out the late in the day snacking.
Aside from lots of cardio, have you found any certain stomach exercises that work better than others? Thanks. -Al

Hey Dave, please forgive me...this board is a little different than the others i go to so bare with me ok? The format i mean and stuff. Anyway,I just saw the AMW show..i missed it when it was originally on. I just wanted to say that i admire how you put your moms name on your back and i can relate to your loss as to my only brother was murdered back in 1986, he was stabbed to death and they never found the person that did it. I am getting his name with the year he was born done on me in ink on saturday. So i guess my question is..do alot of people ask you what and who the name stands for? please forgive me if this has already been asked and is too personal for you....feel free to kick me... I wanted so bad to meet you to tell you this in person...i got tickets for a show in MASS. last january but the show was cancelled. I have seen the band a couple times and i am a huge fan of yours mainly... {i won't lie} i have been following you for quite a while now and you are an amazing man in my eyes.. Well, in closing i just want to say...god bless you and i am so glad you have that closure with your loss...now, if i could only get mine. thanks and keep smiling, Diane

The collar area seems like it would be pretty painful! Lower wrist might hurt too though (I'm kind of wimpy about that kind of thing ;-))
I saw Fahrenheit 9/11 again today - anyone who hasn't seen it definately should - amazing stuff. Some people walked out to day though, which was a shame, it would have been good if they'd seen the whole thing, but there you go.
Dave, do you and Carmen have more than one dog? I saw some pictures on SplashNews that they said was you, Carmen and a yorkie named Hercules, but it looked al ot like Daisy too me. Very cute either way, I love dogs. I liked the pants you were wearing too.:-)

Kudos to you Dave for "holding the fort" under such difficult circumstances on CFR. You are an inspiration to us all. Anyway, thank you for playing Negative Creep - as I was at work it was a nice reminder of home - I am currently teaching my 2 year old the song. Though I have to admit it does lose some of its visceral impact when warbled in a high falsetto by a baby who's doing the hula dance in accompanyment. Still, it has to be done.

Hey - I have been lurking for a few days and just wanted to say I'm really enjoying the blog - everyone is asking such great questions; so it's taken me ages to think of one, here goes:
I read somewhere you would like to work with Madonna one day - what's your favorite Madonna song??
OK, I've thought of one more...
Saw you with Jane's Addiction last year in London - and got one of your picks from roadie after the show, what do you recommend I should do with it?! (Currently it's framed on my wall, but a more interesting solution would be welcome!)

Hey Dave,
So, what’s the thing with the new Gene Simmons album? Are you a big fan of KISS/Gene or did you just happen to fall into that? It’s funny, because when I was 8 years old (way back in 1976) my very first albums I received for Christmas were KISS Alive and Destroyer (still love the vinyl, you should release vinyl when your album comes out). Strange for a little girl, but hey, they rocked and I had a huge crush on Peter Criss. My tastes have changed, but KISS still holds a special place in my heart. Did their style influence you? You guys in the music world are so incestuous, all my favorites have always done something together so I am constantly spending tons of $$ trying to keep up with the crossover releases. I just finally found an original sealed copy of your Rexall video by the way, love that one even though you seem so sad.
Love and Happiness,
Susan

hey!!! i just now heard luiz's NIN cover... i've had trouble downloading "the bedroom sessions" hehe so that's all i got from you man,
fucking amazing!!
i'm pretty much in what an earlier post described pretty accurately as the scraps phase... so for now i ain't contributing much to the community, music-wise... but i promise i will soon
in the meantime... i LOVE this place!!! there's no question about our looking up to it's host... and yet i feel the most beautiful thing to come out of it is the sharing... it would be great if we could start posting some songs of our creation, instead of just covers which sound GREAT btw... but i'd love to hear Freak or Luiz's creativity on it's full extent...
as for the sharing, i hope to be sharing more in the near future...
lotsa love to yall

Hi Dave,
I called into Camp Freddy Radio on Saturday. I'm Teri from Austin, Texas. I really enjoyed the show, and it was amazing to talk to you and Matt Sorum. Imagine, the first time I've ever called into a radio show and my first time was with Dave Navarro and Matt Sorum! I was giddy for the rest of the night!
I was just wondering if Camp Freddy would ever make it down to ATX? We'd love to have you guys play down here. I also can't wait to see your's and Carmen's new tats! You guys are SO SEXY!

Dave,
How do you go about prepping for a studio session. Are you a "must have structure" or "play the way it feels" kind of guy?
I only ask for the simple fact that you seem to layer everything, rythym and solo parts. It gives everything a great atmosphere. I just didn't know if it is contrived or just the way a session flows for you.
Cheers,
Mike C.

is this Unicorn thing a picture of Dave "pleasing himself", by any chance...? Not that I´m THAT interested, but...lol
I remember there was one like that on a fan site in 98 or something...
Even though it´s not exactly my cup of tea, I thought it was a nice idea to take a picture like that - I´d do the same if I could (I don´t mean "if I could masturbate", but if I could get away with it like Dave did!) lol ;O)

I KNOW MOST OF US TRUE FLOYDIANS MISS HIM DEARLY... but on the same note, if Syd didnt do what he done, we may very well not have the current floyd we know and love so much... w/o said gone we never would have had such haunting Floyd tunes as Shine On, nor would we have ever seen The Wall.. w/o syd going "crazy" where would be...

Hey Dave,
I was wondering what are among your favourite songs you recorded with Jane's Addiction.
Posted by: Andrew at July 26, 2004 01:01 PM
I have a question for both DAVE & Cookie...
it´s about the D/s deal you guys were talking about... Have you guys read VENUS IN FURS, the book by Sacher Masoch? I read it a few months ago and thought it was AWESOME... And the main character is called SEVERIN, just like in the song!well, the book came first actually.
( "severin severin speaks so slightly... severin severin awaits you there")
here´s a link in case anyone is interested:
http://www.gutenberg.net/etext/6852
you can read the whole thing online! I highly recommend this book, it´s beautifully written and full of pain and poetry ( isn´t that what life is all about anyway? ) lol
go check it out!

Well ill be dammed.. I just seen that Lollapalooza was cancelled... Go figure, all the good music is being cancelled, while all teh brittney spears pop crap and untalented new artists continue to tour.. sickening to me... This is why i switched to listening to electronic music, at least "techno" is forver growing, while in my opinion rock is stagnating with the crap thats being produced by all these MTV pop stars.. since the Marilyn Manson era.. music has steadily been going downhill, i basically quit listening to rock after manson basically sold out with the dope show, altho even with that being said, i still respect MM for all of is insights and shocks.. AFter MM tho, what can you even consider qulaity music... I cant think of any artist Id support, unless they were from members of bands from the era of GOOD MUSIC.. when rock and roll was still rock and roll and having fun was still an option.. man i hope something happens with these untalented bands coming out now... ALtho is there really any place rock can go... All the good stuff has been done... classic rock (floyd hendrix joplin) reborn into Phish, late 80s early 90s heavy metal is gone, granted im glad the hair bands are gone.. lol.. the crazy hair was a bit much... late 90s.. alternative and grunge.. RHCP, JA, Nirvana... nothing today can come close.. 00's
to about 2002... Manson, Korn, etc etc.. all kicked ass... then what did we get, Creed, Goo Goo Dolls, blah bl;ahblah.. and im pretty sure im wrong on the dates with those bands.. but after that where did the MUSIC go.. i honestly can say im not impressed by any band out now..
What is your take on the newest music scene Dave.. And be honest, screw being politically correct.. LOL.. nevermind, your f*kn cool, you will speak your mind

Hi Luiz,
Lou Reed based his song 'Venus in Furs' on the book you mentioned.
Have you heard the Velvet Underground version? If not, it's great, check it out. It was recorded in the 1960s!
The Cure's 'Snakekepit' owes a LOT to the song 'Venus in Furs'.
If you are interested in erotic literature, I recommend 'The Story of the Eye' by Georges Bataille. It's another piece of art which is not new, this book was written a long time ago, in 1928! It's not for the squeamish, it's a little 'out there'. There are comparisons to the work of Sade & Nietzsche.
Some have called this book "porno as an art form", you decide.
If you enjoy Sacher Masoch, you might enjoy this book I don't know if 'enjoy' is the correct word....If not enjoy it, you might find it veeery interesting.
Peace~!

Hi Sandy B & Rain,
>>"3. Dave, ever play with D/s relationships?? The Domme in me thinks you're a switch at heart. Am I wrong??
If you are saying what I think you are saying, then yes I have. Always on the s-side."
I'm so lost on this can anyone help explain it to me? I hate feeling dumb!<<
Rain, you're not 'dumb', Dave & Cookie were just being a little 'cryptic? I'm guessing they didn't want to freak out the sensibilities of the very young people here. I understand some fans here are rather young. I believe, 14 or that age range.
Well..hmmm....Sounds like good old S&M to me. ;) Or am I missing something?

YES, YES, YES!!! The Story of the Eye is an amazing book. Anyone with an open mind should read it. Most people just look at me strange when I mention it. But it can really free you up if you let it. Thank you Itanja, for bringing that up. This board rocks.

Dave,
My birthday is the day after Perk’s (same year too) and I can't think of a better birthday present than seeing you guys play live. I will keep my fingers crossed that it happens. One of my favorite things about living in L.A., besides the weather, is getting to see great, intimate shows. Hopefully we will get lots of them from you! Thanks for everything and being so open with us.

actually all of you guys... regarding the music, whatever you decide to share is more than enough, i still would like to say that it would never be taken as "advertising yourself"...

hey i had a great time with you guys over at msn
as sandy said, dave you should be proud... you are mostly responsible for all the good vibes going on round here. i think that the fact that you encourage your fans to mingle and get along, and share their creativeness has given a real thrust to this community.
also, kudos (is that even a word) to freak, who is kinda the backbone of the community, posting logos, sharing songs and coming up with nice stuff such as the whole msn thing.
i had a lot of fun tonight i hope we can do it again
