Post Rehearsal
Hey, Giovanni. Hope your week lightens up.
1. When are we gonna have a LIVE chat with you?
I'm down. How do we set that up? Someone tell me!
2. how many CDs do you own (at last count, anyway?) Are there any you're ashamed/proud as hell of owning?
Not as many as one might think, but the ones I do own, I own with pride.
3. A band I haven’t heard you talk about is Tool.
Love Tool. The last show of Lolla last year, Maynard did Kashmir with Chaney, Perk and I. It was awesome!
4. Can you take us through your training schedule that you do? is it mostly cardio or weights? How early do you wake up to do this?
I really mix it up. I try to not stay in the gym for more than an hour, I'd burn out otherwise. I do very light weights two days a week and the rest of the week is either cardio or yoga. For cardio, I switch between machines as I get burnt on those too.
5. "Slow Motion Sickness"; maybe a strange question but what was your reason/explanation to write this song?
It's about kicking heroin and having to face the wreckage you created while feeling like a raw nerve.
6. Oh, and what happened with the unreleased album that lived in the coffin?
Buried it.
7. hey dave, any recs for a good tatt parlor in LA?
I like Mark Mahoney's Shamrock Tattoo on Sunset.
8. One of my questions is when you were younger like in H.S or in your'e early 20's did have low self-esteem or not liked yourself physically and if thats the reason why you started to work out? Is that why you always used dark sun glasses more often in the early Jane's concerts?
Well, I definitely had low self esteem and that probably accounts for the glasses back then, but I think the reason I got into working out was because when I got clean, I just wanted to be healthier. As many addicts do, when I cleaned up, I became addictive with even the healthy stuff.
9. With the music inductry in such utter disarray now, what's the process in getting your new band up and running and in a position to be heard?
Hmmmm. My best answer is to do shows, shows, shows, create a fan base and fire up a web site. No better way to reach the people. The best advice I can give you is to just do it because you love it.
10. I read that in 1983 you were witness to the brutal murder of both your mother and aunt. Why do you think your life was spared on that terrible day?
That is true. Why spared? I don't know but I thank God for granting me the grace to live.
goodnight,
Dave

Hey Dave just want to say Deconstruction is my favorite work of you & Eric & I hope to hear some more stuff from you two. The combination of you & Eric's style is amazing.
Thanks for all the guitar inspiration.

I just want to say as a fan, thank you so much for taking time to get personal with fans here on this site. It is very unique, special and gracious that as an artist you do this for us. I am sure I speak for everyone else here when I say that it truly makes us all love and appreciate you and the great work you have done throught the years even more.
Looking forward to what's to come,

does anyone know if/when jerry cantrell is working on a new project? i looked up his site but it said it will be up again soon. i truly miss AIC & layne staley. i think jerry cantrell has one of the most beautiful voices, as well as guitar skills, in rock music...i saw that he played w/ camp freddy a while back, so i thought you guys might know. his solo record was back in 98. how time flies...

Dave,
You ever run into Brant Bjork or hear any of his music? He's from SoCal and I think he's one of the best musicians around and his band is awesome. Just curious.

Well dave for an oline chat... ya neeed an IRC room...which you can connect to by using a program called mIRC www.mirc.com OR the easier one for like one off occasions is by through a javascript chat room.
Although easier it does end up being a really pain in the arse so once ive set up a room ill write a guide on how to connect to the room etc.... later today (i jst got up)

Dave,
Are you and Perry still speaking? He sounded angry and emotional in his statement earlier this week (re circus seals, shallow holes etc.) If the two of you are not speaking, do you think (regardless of any Jane's activites) that you can ever be friends again? It would be very sad for both of you if you never spoke again. (I'm sure deep down, Dave Gilmour and Roger Waters regret the fact that they haven't spoken for nearly 20 years)

Hey Dave first off thanks alot for answering my question re: the musical vein you guys are taking in this band and new ideas/experimentation etc
I just had a few short questions, if that's ok with you sir; 1. Would you guys consider performing any Janes Addiction songs in this new band? 2. Any good music youve heard recently (new or old) which you could recommend to us? 3. Just out of curiosity; your thoughts on the Foo Fighters?
Thanks alot Dave. Keep up the good work.

Dear Dave, How do you stay looking so young, do you use any creams or any nightly skin rituals to keep your skin looking so young?
Posted by: Janine at July 8, 2004 02:29 AM
"Ram people are wise, gentle, and compassionate. They are compatible with Rabbits, Pigs, and Horses."
Hear that Dave? He's calling you a Pigfucker! Such ignorance, I don't know how you put up with it. I blame the internet. In my day the opportunity to make a fool of yourself in front of your idol simply didn't exist. You just had to live with your talking-to-the-famous fantasies inside your head, knowing that you'd never have to have all those councelling bills to get over the time you spilled hot chocolate over Barry Manilow's pink shorts on holiday because you were in such a rush to tell him how graet he was.
It was a simpler time.

I just want to say thank you for being so kind and answering our questions. My question is.....when you look in the mirror what is the one thing that you dont like? or are self conscious about?...eyes..nose..etc...
Posted by: becky at July 8, 2004 02:45 AM
how far ahead/behind GMT are you? I'm too lazy/stupid to work it out... haha. d;
On the subject of the music business and bands and whatnot (as it kind of looks like we are...), any, er... do they still use the term 'underground' or is that not cool enough for this day and age? Underground bands... anything decent you're willing to share with us? (:
ta, lovie.

Hi Dave - firstly thanks for spending time answering the questions of us crazy internet folk! Its highly appreciated!
I was wondering if any transcriptions of strays or tno will be made? Seems like a weird question when i write it down but i thought that you probably have to give people the OK before stuff like that gets made. I assume of course...
Thanks for the inspiration over the years and come the UK as soon as you can! Also i feel you should start taking advantage of loyal fans, so if you any web site related magic done, please contact me or others as i'm sure we'd happily give up our free time to help you out! :0)
Cheers,

How is the songwriting process different with the new band as opposed to the Earlier years with Jane's?

Hey Dave, I don't want to keep this thread going about drug use but Do you ever dream about the drugs? I got out of control with cocaine for years, and dream sometimes that I'm snorting it still, Oh my, I wake up and I kinda feel like I really have. My very good friend went the other way and got hooked on smoking it, and she has the dreams sometimes too and the same feelings. We can confide in each other about it......it's so weird, I never got into heroin, but the coke had me wakin up and pawnin all my shit too. I know it's a personal question u don't have to answer it, I totally understand. For having my nose clean for 5 years now, I'm like damn, am I ever gonna move on and not think about that shit. Take care and God Bless.

Dave,
I'd totally love to chat live as well. Really this is a question/comment for you and Will (the IRC guy): how much traffic are you guys expecting, and what network do you intend to use to host this session? This could get really bogged down with traffic unless it's kept *very* low key (which would be kewl...intimacy is underrated).
I work for a web host, so if at some point you guys need some extra horsepower, I could talk to the network guys here about setting up an IRC server on our network (on the downlow). Otherwise, love to Will for volunteering, and please post the server/port/chan/pass when you get it setup bro.

hey dave thanks for answering our questions and well like everyone else i've got one for you.
When was the intial moment (before you were clean) that made you think to yourself, "i don't have to live like this anymore." And was writing Trust No One more therapy than anything? And does journal writing help you keep your spirits up? Matter of fact what keeps your spirits up period?
Much thanks

"Hmmmm. My best answer is to do shows, shows, shows, create a fan base and fire up a web site."
Are you guys going to be doing the site yourselves? If not, I'm always looking for new projects ;p
Posted by: matt at July 8, 2004 09:22 AM
From my experience with the RHCP site and chats with Flea, I highly recommend a structured chat with a host that chooses questions and asks them. Otherwise Dave is going to be bombarded left and right with questions and won't know where to start and everyone will have a hard time figuring out what's going on. Hopefully it will be more of a chat than a question and answer session.. i mean Dave has done plenty of interviews and answered lots and lots of questions and we don't want people abusing the priviledge of having him take time out for us. Maybe if he asked the questions and chose the topic of conversation?

beloved dave and dear maria
i've spent hours and hours listening to dave's songs (and i'm glad and proud for it)! it's fun that dave have now the opportunity to waste his time with my silly questions! isn't it?
what's your favorite figurative culture dave?

oh no, I didn't mean it that way.. I've spent lots of time listening to his music too, I've been to Jane's concerts and his solo appearance in Chicago after Trust No One came out. I know he's a nice guy and if he minded answering questions then he wouldn't be doing that on this site. The thing is that there's only one of him and lots of us and i'm just hoping that if a chat happens that we take it easy on him, you know? That's all.
Just my 2 cents, do with it what you will.

Posted by: Daire at July 8, 2004 11:26 AM
There's a couple of ways to keep the chat 'real':
- Dave could have a moderator
- The host could limit the number of clients connected to the IRC channel
Really what's going to make it nuts is if word gets out. This blog isn't getting hammered (knock on wood) to the extent that if we set something up, there would be tons of people on. Shit like AOL Live and all of that they advertise real heavily. That's why those things get out of hand.
But then again, maybe Dave *wants* a little IRC maddness just for laughs. :-)

a live chat would be so kewl, I agree a moderator and maybe a way to limit or control participants would be a good idea.Ive been in a few chats with special guests only to have flamers etc ruin it for the rest of us with foul comments and arguements.Id hate to see that happen....This site may not be getting hammered so to speak, but im sure its being monitored by other not so thrilled members of other forums, and im sure some would love to come cause trouble,if u know what i mean.

Hello Dave,
Thank you for wasting your time with our cheesy questions. I've seen you with Jane's last year in Paris, really amazing. What do you think of Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan? Did you ever played with Billy Corgan?
About Jane's, I just wanted to thank you guys for great creations you made during these years. Especially you, Mr. Navarro, for playing the way you do, with your dirty sound. You're the last guy who's making his guitar scream and cry on the radio and that's cool.
P.S.: call me when you'll put a Led Zep cover band, I'll play the groovy bass.

Hey Dave,
Besides live chat, a forum for postings and definitely an email list for news would be great! I am sure I am not alone in saying I'd pay for membership to a part of the site where we could download etc. Hell, I volunteer right now to help you guys start that up!

I liked how nice you were on the Poker Showdown, you're a sweet guy. I've never played a boardgame where people where that good of winners, let alone poker. (Last time I played 'Risk' with some friends someone threw the board across the room. Seriously. Over 'Risk'.)

about the George Michael thing, well when you open yourself up to the public youve got to expect some bad along with the good right?
People are entitled to their opinion, but then Ive also always thought that it never hurts to keep ones opinion to yourself either.
Is it me or do I find that people are rude, insensitive, overly critical, and just downright nasty at times for no reason, not just online, but as a whole.
Anyways my thought is,if you dont like someone or something, well thats your choice, but why be an asshole about it.
Posted by: stephanie at July 9, 2004 06:33 AM
The Red Hot Chili Peppers public chatroom was taken off the site for pretty much the same reason, and was made more private being for fanclub members only in the fanclub section.
The biggest problem was fans not being able to talk about the band (or anything really) without being trashed by some wise asses for liking them. The atmosphere was just not inviting, especially when people would come in pretending to be the band members and not allowing the real Flea to go in and chat without people thinking he was an imposter.
