Old Stuff
OK. Two new downloads. The first one is a really old version of Hungry from the Spread days, kind of a demo but I think I like it more than the TNO version. It was recorded by Dave Schiffman and has Chad Smith on drums, I play bass and guitar, etc. Lyrics are slightly different. The hamster line is in reference to when I had two hamsters when I was young, and one ate the other. That was when I learned about death. Was I loaded? Yes. I think I put those guys through hell! Sorry, Chad... Sorry, Dave.

The next one is a song off of Deconstruction called Fire in the Hole. This track, written by Eric Avery and I, features Michael Murphy on drums and Gibby from the Butthole Surfers on vocals. An interesting jam.

Hey Dave,

Hey Dave, Hungry is a great song all around.
You should put up the VIDEO of the old version of Hungry. i had it saved YEARS ago, but i lost it. i think Chad was a redneck or something, and i remember you had on alot of white facepaint that even covered your goatee, and Chad hit a deer in his truck and brought it home or something along those lines. Who knows, maybe it was just the paranoid delusions getting to me and i made up my own video. But i am PRETTY SURE it was real.
Posted by: Six7Six7 at July 12, 2004 11:39 PM
Oh, and i also remember a part in the old Hungry video where you sucked off a clown or something with a 3 foot pointy fake penis. It might have been Twiggy.
and Russian people were there. i think. and it was all in black and white.
God, either that is the best video ever, or i am just crazy and made the whole thing up. Can you let me know if i am imagining this all?

hey dave- bummer i missed out on the chat :( but i was curious to know if you can recall all the side projects you chad & flea did together apart from RHCP. i recall reading about those collaborations several times back in the day but if you can remember or at least recommend certain collaborations, i would appreciate it.
i love those guys so much. i hope they're all doing well. chad & flea are funny as hell :) i think your comment about chad's ahem package was really funny. i think it was in an article i read from prob a year ago or so, but chad was cracking jokes about the yoga bus which ak, flea & jf share & his bus of typical rockstar caliber. it was very funny, but also very interesting to hear that! i really agree with one of your earliest posts about Anthony Kiedis inspiring us all to have faith. I am reeeaallly looking forward to reading 'scar tissue' not only because i respect the hell outta AK but because he is very honest, articulate & poetic. i bet it will be an incredible read.
i hear RHCP is putting out a new live cd but supposedly only in europe: "Chili Peppers Ready First Live Album": http://www.billboard.com/bb/daily/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000562981
but i must admit as much as i love the reformed lineup it pisses me off that they don't play anything off 'one hot minute'. that was the album & time period that i really got influenced by yourself & the other peppers & it means a lot to me & i'm sure million of other fans, but i guess you gotta respect why they may not prefer to play the songs...
sorry about the RHCP rant there...just thought you & the others might wanna hear about that stuff.
i lost my grandmother about a week ago so music has been very helpful.
love you guys! keep it up :)

I think six7six7 is talking about the "Venus in Furs" video. Wow. That video is still lacking in my collection. Hate to be a beggar, but that would really be a cool download. The more I see and hear about the Spread project it makes clear to me that it was way beyond the demo-phase. It was almost completely finished. I mean: An album cover. Professionally recorded audio, fotoshoots and even a video. Shame it didn't have an official release. Well, I heard interviews you did on this subject so it is clear to me why it wasn't released, But still a pitty. Ahwell, strange how things go. Lookking forward to any new release.

Hi Dave,
I was at your show, in Milan,Italy 13.10.2003.
That night will always be in my heart&mind.
Thank you boys.
Q:I own a Digitech X-series BassSqueeze pedal: in the brochure they say that Chris uses some X-series pedal, do you know which?

Missed the online chat :( perhaps when you do another it could be a little more user friendly for those of us on GMT and in Europe, pleeeease?
If I could have been there my question would be:-
You have your ears and nipples pierced - anything else? Is that too naughty to ask??? ;)
Thanks so much for the downloads

Hey Dave,
I heard my first Jane's Addiction song before I was 10 and One Hot Minute later had a huge impact on my decision to start playing guitar and my approach to playing. Now i'm about to finish college and I have seriously grown up with your music. Keep up the good work and I look forward to another new chapter of good music! Play lots of shows in LA!!
My question is:
Every guitar player seems to have one or two songs that they can't help but play whenever they're practicing (i.e. Stairway To Heaven). What songs would those be for you?
Posted by: Randy at July 13, 2004 02:36 AM
ty for the songs, very kewl, listenin now as i wake up at the ungodly hr of 5 am..gonna be a rough week here, sigh.
Anyways thanks for making my mornin a lil better :o)

Would you ever think of putting up the videos for Hungry and Rexall because i cant get them anywhere and i dont do kazza or anything.

Hey, shame about Jane's man, but I got to see you on halloween at Brixton academy so it left me pretty satisfied. I am a big fan of the Cure and they are pretty much local boys for me as well, and I know you are a fan so just gonna ask a couple of questions. Whats your favourite Cure album? Have you met Robert Smith? If so, have you got any plans to collaborate with him (to be honest I think he needs to make up for the Blink 182 thing, haha)? Cheers

"fire" is perfect...
the quintessential D.N. guitar solo.
also one of my faves because of the alvarado st. reference....
Posted by: Chris at July 13, 2004 03:12 AM
OK Dave, i have been corrected. maybe that WAS the Venus in Furs video.
But i KNOW there is a Hungry video. I remember playing it all the damn time just so i could hear the song from start to finish.
Do you realize how much cool artistic shit you have done and it never got released? Trust me man, it's all worthy of release too. Maybe you should put out "Spread" to accompany your book. To fully give people the full understanding of that time in your life, i think they need the soundtrack that goes along with it.
Stick the damn CD in the book if you want to. Now THAT will sell you a couple extra copies FOR SURE.
Also, have you ever considered just recording an album of instrumental music? Just you? With all the rock albums you have put out to fuck to, maybe a spaced-out trippy mellow album would be a good way to wind down. Check out Buckethead's "Colma", that is a perfect example. And Apparently, John5 (formely of Manson) is working on something similar right now too. I'd like to see where YOU would take that.

Ciao Dave
Cheers for all the mp3s!!!!!!
Recently, I listened to an old bootleg-single by JA which featured an early live-version of "Bloody Rag". Weren't you pissed-off that P4P recorded that song for their debut?
Hope to see you soon again in Switzerland with what band soever!

Hey Dave, well looks like we both had a similar experience with hamsters mine ate the other as well, then my brother put a sausage in the cage and it ate that as well! Turned canibal on us overnight. (I bet these days you take your hamsters for therapy lol)
As for the Rexall Vid and Hungry check here http://www.mtv.com/bands/az/navarro_dave/audvid.jhtml
I used to have the Rexall vid thru Rolling Stone but they have taken it down by the looks of it.
Looking forward to your next chat and like so many others could I ask that it be at a more European friendly time please, as I was up at 4am and didn't manage to get in to the last one:(
Still love you lots tho for doing it in the first place.
Take care K x

Posted by: j at July 13, 2004 04:21 AM
P.s
I didn't mean you personally would take your hampsters for therapy, I ment there is probably someone who does therapy for hamsters these days.

DAVE I'M A LITTLE FREAKED OUT RIGHT NOW!
After keeping up with the board for a while now, I just happened to get up this morning and have a trip down memory lane. So I put on "Everything" by the Bangles...ok...so that wasn't at all freaky, until I started singing along to the lyric sheet and noticed that your name appears in the credits for "Something to Beleive in" and "I'll Set you free".
Seriously, I haven't listened to this album for about 14 years...
Can you explain the Bangles thing for me *shrinks into the corner in case showing her ignorance*
Some kind of strange syncronicity going on in my life (that or you are truly omnipotent!)

Good Morning! Thanks again so much for the awesome music.
It's 5:52 am and I've got a vivid mental image of hamsters eating each other now....ugh! :p Think I'll skip breakfast and just enjoy the tunes awhile longer. :0)

I think your playing in Deconstruction was your best work yet.
10 years later and that disc still kicks my ass

Dave....
Thanx so much for the downloads, "Hungry" is just perfect.
As for the chat....I see you guys had a lot of fun....can I ask you if next one may be at another time so that even people outside Usa ( like me, I'm from Italy ) can join it? Just think about that.
Thanx anyway.
Much love

Hey Dave, nice job on the CPS last week. I noticed some of the wicked rings you were wearing and am wondering where's a good place to score such jewelery. It's hard finding shit like that here in Maryland.
Also, I'm a big fan of the band LIVE. I know they've been into your music w/ Jane's since back in the day, and that they opened for you guys for several shows a few years back. Are you friends with any of them, and do you dig Chad Taylor's style of guitar playing?
Thanks for your dedication to this site. Can't wait to hear the new stuff!

Dave,
The chat was very cool. I totally digged being able to talk to an artist that I highly respect and that has been a source of inspiration.
Adding these downloads to the blog is beyond generous. We can't get enough of your work!
So I read this morning in the news that Dave Grohl is playing drums on the next NiN project- any chance you'll be a part of that scene?
One more question: I would like to (as well as many others I'm sure) put together a collection of all of your commercially released recordings (studio albums, singles, appearances on other albums, etc.). Is there a complete list somewhere, or would you be able to post one at some point?
Thanks,
aj

There were some really great dark acoustic tracks that never made it into the public, but that are trippy and haunting almost like nick drake's stuff. Any chance of hearing some of those tracks from the Spread projects.

Yowsa... what´s up? I like your tunes .. Hungry Early sounds good...
What is the model of the accoustic guitar that you´re playing???
About the hamster story ... man ... I´m so sad for you! How can this life be so cruel???
Sorry about the englis ,sorry, Diego!
See you around!
