Saturday, In The Park...

dave_spread_iconThank you guys for the positive feedback! I have to go and tape this awards thing today so I will be off-line for a day or so. When I return I will get to some questions and we will discuss some options for the cyber-song. The Panic Channel is open to interpretation for the time being as it has evolved from so many different things. I can get into it a bit better when I have the time. For now, enjoy your weekend and I will speak to you tomorrow.

G-Phoria

ConfusingFreAkWhat's up? Today, Carmen and I are going to a rehearsal for the G-Phoria Awards. It is like the Oscars but for video games. We tape the actual show tomorrow and it will air on August 6th on Tech TV. It will be, at that time, that my Star Wars Kid Tribute will be revealed. I am psyched as I also will be able to play the newest version of Metal Gear 3: Snake Eater. (Kind of why I took the gig!) Also, it appears we have decided on a band name. That should be up later on today. We have had so much progress this week, so much momentum that everything is starting to gel really well. Unfortunately, Chaney has to go to Canada to do an album with someone for a week. I understand though, the kid has a family to feed. Perk, Isaacs and I will continue writing and overload him with homework the day he returns! So how do we do this jam thing? Perhaps someone can decide on a tempo and build a loop or drum track. That would get the ball rolling. Let me know your thoughts on the matter. Again, thank you for the artwork, links and pictures. I will eventually post the stuff you send in and update the links on the site.

Peace Out,

Dave

20/20

dave_spread_icon1. As for a question. Do you ever wear shirts and/or do you own any?

Sure, I do. I know I must have a couple around here somewhere...

2. does that mean PRS have now made your very own signature guitar instead of a stock 24

No, we have been talking about it but the ones in the ad are just the custom shop ones they make for me.

3. OH, which leads me to 1 last thing -- why do you call her mouse?

Because she is so small.

4. would you ever consider Internet collaboration recording on a song or three or more with the musician folk on here/posting them here

Totally! The only problem is that I don't have Logic or Pro Tools at home. I would still like to hear what would happen if you all did something like that. When we get closer to recording, I'll ask for some files and I will for sure join in.

5. Do you have a process of how you create the vocal melody to go with lyrics you write?

When I write songs, I kind of do it all at once. I let the music dictate the lyrics and melody.

6. But seriously which country/place in Europe do you like most? You must have seen a lot during all the years of touring.

England, France, Austria

7. The front and back cover of TNO features symbolic physical representations of the letters "T" and "O". Is the "T" a mystical reference to "TAO" for you?

I would love to say yes, because I would seem so deep, but sadly, no.

8. I was wondering when you're "down" what picks you up and motivates you?

Being of service to others. When I am down, I try to do something for someone else.

9. (Nipple piercing) Its been about 4 months, but sometimes they are still a bit sore. Does that still happen to you, or are yours fully healed?

Well, I have had mine for over 10 years but I remember them taking up to 9 months to fully heal. It is a process for sure.

10. Dave... you say you don't read music so I am curious how you go about making a solo? Do you simply have all the scale patterns memorized or is it a lot of trial and error?

Kind of what you said. Scales and trial and error. After a while you can just kind of "feel" what the right choices are.

11. Just wondering who took that amazingly beautiful picture of you and Carmen behind the piano in your home?

A photographer from Rolling Stone. I am sorry but I do not remember his name.

12. theory or feeling; which floats yer boat?

I'd say a little of each and mostly luck.

13. but do you use any special pickups or just stock?

I go stock.

14. you were in rehab and trying to go clean but it didn't make you feel any better on an emotional level so you relapsed and started using again. Do you ever still get those feelings and how did you overcome them because you look like you have obviously gotten past that.

Well, the truth is that when I went to rehab back then, they suggested a lot of things that would help me. I chose to ignore those things and naturally I did relapse. The problem back then was me, not the facility. Since then, I have allowed myself to be "teachable" and take the required action to live a happy, joyous and free life. Thank you for the question. I'd hate to think that I unknowingly said something negative about a place so important to people like that, without clearing it up.

15. ¿If offered, would you ever do a Pete Steele and pose for Playgirl?

Well, I don't know who Pete Steele is, but I would probably decline such an invitation. In fact, when I was in the Chili's I was in fact asked to do a spread. I said no thank you.

16. Since you got to see a bit of APC on palooza, just wondering what you thought of Billy Howerdel?

Those guys were so rocking. Twiggy, Maynard, Josh and James have been friends for years. I met Billy on this last tour and was blown away by him.

17. Ever considered life without the beard?!

Yes, When I pack it all in and move to Montana or something like that to live out my golden years. It is funny, but after so long, it just doesn't feel like me without it.

18. what do you think of Mansons music?

He is one of my all time favorite people and artists.

19. This video is such a trip, it really strikes me differently each time I see it...whose concept was it?

The concept was the brain child of me and Gavin Bowden. Gavin is a fairly well known video director who I met back in the RHCP days. He also happens to be Flea's brother-in-law.

20. Is that you singing backup vocals during the long middle section of One Big Mob on One Hot Minute?

Yes, it is.

Peace,

Dave

Spare Time in the A.M.

this21. My questions is how does Carmen feel about your "Trust No One" tattoo.

Well, she knows it is a part of my past and doesn't pertain to her. She's all good with my past, as I am with hers.

2. I understand that Henry Rollins is a huge Jane's Addiction fan and admires your guitar playing greatly. I was wondering if you have worked or intend to work together?

We spent a lot of time together in 1991 on tour. Since then I have had the opportunity to jam with the Rollins Band. That was a blast. He has a radio show on Indie 103.1 as well. Check it out.

3. Dave, are you playing any local shows anytime soon (L.A.)???

Trying to get a September show together... Will update as it gets closer.

4. Your thoughts on Morello, if you're a fan, and which band you're diggin, Rage Against the Machine or Audioslave?

Tom is amazing. I have played with him many times, on stage and at his home. I love Rage and Audioslave. I am also a huge Soundgarden fan. It was so cool to see Audioslave every night on tour.

5. Dave would you ever consider buying a home out in Europe?

I don't think so, that would ruin Europe as a great place to visit.

6. ¿Did you actually write your upcoming book or did you have someone dictate what you said?

I actually wrote several passages but the bulk of it was written by Neil Strauss. He pretty much just hung out with me for a year.

7. Kraft Deluxe = Led Zeppelin, Original Mac and Cheese = Creed

Thanx for the tip. Consider me schooled!

8. I was wondering if you have done any martial arts before??

I was really into Tae Kwon Do for a while. All the leg work kind of screwed up my lower back, so I eventually put it down.

9. BOXERS, BRIEFS, OR COMMANDO?

I will work with all three options depending on the pants.

10. (Diamanda Galas) "The Sporting Life" was always a overlooked classic for me.

Me too. What a killer record. Diamanda and John Paul Jones. Really out there. Yes, that is a sample of her on the track, Everything on TNO. She kind of rules!

11. I got to check out your show in Cleveland 4 days before 9/11. First I want to say what a great show and second what was the trippy music before you came out from. It was like a Wizard of OZ meets Willy Wonka on acid deal. It was friggin awesome.

Yes, it was from the Wizard of Oz. Good call.

12. I was just wondering what your "GUILTY PLEASURES" were?

I don't know. I don't feel guilty about much.

13. I know you've posted a lot about musicians who admire, but what person would you say is your hero?

I respect so many people from rockers, to philosophers to film makers to scientists, that it is hard to narrow it down.

Unicorn

this2Nice work everybody! You all got the MSN thing hooked up. I'd like to do another chat soon too. We will figure out a time and place for sure. Someone had asked for a copy of the Venus version that accompanies the black and white video. I am afraid I don't have that but I did run across this. It's a version of Venus In Furs I did with Danny Saber. As for the quicktime I promised, it will be digitized from VHS this week.

Here is a quick 12...

1. Any bands or albums you can recommend with what you'd suggest as kick ass guitar playing, or what artists have influenced your style?

I really think the band 11 is under rated. Of course there is Hendrix, Robert Smith, Page, Beck, Clapton, Townsend... I could go on forever, but those are my favorites.

2. An episode of The Simpsons, with your wife, was on a couple days ago. You a big fan of the show?

Huge fan. "It was the best of times, it was the murst of times." I also love The Family Guy.

3. How did Carmen find having the tattoo done Dave?

She took it like a champ. No pain, I of course, winced a few times.

4. Dave I wondered do you cook? Are you any good?

Give me 2 boxes of Kraft Mac & Cheese. I have a system. I use 1 1/2 packets of mix per box. A cheat day specialty!

5. Having written so many timeless tunes yourself, is there a song of which you say "Whoa, I wish I had written that!"?

Well, Kashmir comes to mind, but I wouldn't want to give up the mystery it carries, so, I guess the answer is no.

6. I once heard a demo version of REXALL that had the coolest bridge... the lyrics went something like "love the moment, leave the girl behind"

"Love the moment, leave the girl. Love the moment, leave the moment... leave the moment..."
I have that somewhere. I'll try to find it. There are some really odd versions of that song.

7. I'm wondering, what's your favourite song by them? (X)

The Unheard Music.

8. and a question for dave if he has the time...back in 2002 i think...MTV aired a special on you and carmen called "love story" or something like that...do you know if it'll ever see the light of day again either on MTV or via DVD/VHS?

It MIGHT appear on the Til Death Do Us Part DVD. I'll look into it. That link that was posted a day or so ago with Carmen playing drums was from that show.

9. Have you ever worked with the Make A Wish foundation Dave?

Yes, I have. A truly amazing experience. One that I am grateful for.

10. What advice would you give to those of us who are looking to start bands of our own.

I would really have to say to make sure you enjoy what you are doing and that you are doing it for that reason.

11. when it's said that stephen is disgusted by fruits, does that mean he hates gay people?

No, it means he hates fruit.

12. Any artists or shops you'd recommend in the Chicago area?

I really don't know of any... My favorite shop is Mark Mahoney's Shamrock Tattoo in Hollywood.

13. Goodnight. DN

Step Away...

metalfreakI step away for a day and look what happens. This place is just rocking! I love that you have decided to hook up and share files and chat. I am very tired so I am about to hit it but I just wanted to say hello and goodnight. Oh, I noticed that the unicorn picture has started to circulate. It's all good, just be careful who you send it to. Wouldn't want to "upset" anyone. That picture was taken around 4:00 a.m. one morning back in 1998 I believe. My wife actually has the original Polaroid. The funny thing is that I thought at one time that it would be a good idea to upload that picture. As someone said, it is back to bite me in the ass. I thought that if this day ever came I would be so embarrassed but you know what? I am so... not! You all know me. Even better now. I'm gonna go get some sleep. We have been working really hard, so to speak, so I haven't had my usual time to answer questions. I apologize for that, but you all seem to have the run of the place. Contrary to my past ideas (TNO and all), I trust you to take good care of it here while I am away.

Much Love,

DN

Sunday...

skulfreakSunday. Good morning. Last night was a blast, we had the Suicide Girls on the show. Damn, they are adorable! Anyway, enjoy the rest of the day, I'm just chillin at home with my wife. Peace be unto you:

1. What was the first song you learned to play?

I honestly do not remember.

2. Being Hispanic was it anymore difficult to break into the business?

Well, I have never tried any other way, but I would have to say, no.

3. Dave, ever play with D/s relationships?? The Domme in me thinks you're a switch at heart. Am I wrong??

If you are saying what I think you are saying, then yes I have. Always on the s-side.

4. My cover of Sunny Days is online! Hope u'll enjoy it as much as I do!

Thank you FreAk, very well done. You are one talented Mother F@!%er!!!

5. Which famous LA band would you rather see on a reunion tour: The original Guns n' Roses lineup or Van Halen w/David Lee Roth?

Well, I am so down with the VR boys I would have to say VH/DLR.

6. Hey, freak... SUNNY DAY sounds good... can I sing in it?

That would be awesome if you guys stared making art together via the Internet! How cool would it be to make music and art between people who have never met! I would support anything you guys would want to do like that. Might be nice to create a link of everybody's work.

7. What's your favorite brand of coffee (home brew) to get the day started?

Starbuck's French Roast.

8. I'm having problems getting through with any of my songs, all I end up with are scraps.

Think of the "scraps" as seeds... They will eventually grow into whatever they are supposed to be.

9. Did you and Carmen get the new tats? Where are they?

We got our wedding date. 11-22 She went with the lower wrist and I went with the collar area.

10. I am wanting to know if the "I've got your unicorn right here b**ch" picture of u is real???

Why, whatever do you mean?

11. Does addiction run in your family?

It does. My advice to you is to do something about it before it gets out of hand. If you are recognizing a problem, there probably is one. Take action. As for what kind of action, that is up to you. There is all kinds of help out there. Find something that suits you.

love,

Dave

CFR

donotfreakOK! Tonight is Camp Freddy Radio from 6:00pm-8:00pm (west coast) on Indie 103.1. Check the site for web cast. Our special guests tonight are a couple of the Suicide Girls. I was absent last week, but I will definitely be there for this. I don't really have a lot else to report. Rehearsals are good, I'm working on getting that Venus mp3 and the quicktime version of the videoclip. FreAk's logos are really cool, check his link if you haven't. Thank you FreAk!

1. This a goofy, unfocused question, but is your new band all about "the rock"?

Our songs right now are so varied. Most are about the rock, some are acoustic jams and some are just what we like to call, songs.

2. I was just wondering if you had anything to say or any advise about someone who wishes they could be "famous" or become a singer

Just love what you do and don't pay attention to the outcome. That's my two cents.

3. how many cigarettes do you smoke a day?!

I get asked this a lot and I have tried to avoid answering, but you guys won't seem to let me off the hook. I would say between 1 and 2 packs a day. I have spent the last year seriously considering quitting and how to go about doing so.

4. Wondering about Spread evolving into TNO?

You know, I can't really recall the timeline, but Spread started with Chad Smith and I. We later learned that there was already a band with the name Spread so we were stuck. My way around it was to create Spread Entertainment, which is still officially not quite realized. (Drugs really can get in the way of dreams.) Then, Chad went back to work with RHCP, so I just went with my name as I didn't really have a band at the time. As time went on and I kept mixing and remixing, the whole "Spread" vibe was kind of lost. I still like TNO, but I guess the reason I put up the old versions of the raw material is because those tracks are closer to how they were originally written. (Fin)

5. where'd you come up with the baby-uni-spread-whatever-the-hell-your-pretty-icon-is-and-I-should-know-but-I'm-a-really-lame-fan?

I went through a phase where I was all about Unicorns as the opposite symbol of how I felt. I researched all these artists online and found one named Tim Jacobus. He made the logo for me. As time went on and I changed my life and outlook, I realized that the Unicorn could also stand for something to strive for, so I ended up keeping it. Plus, it just looks cool. It's not often you see a "hard" unicorn. There is more about this in the book, due out in October.

6. Do you ever get to see any British comedys?

My favorites are Fawlty Towers and The Office.

7. Did you get any vocal coaching before TNO? How'd it feel mainly singing and playing on the tour, any nerves?

I worked with a coach named Ron Anderson. Did it make me nervous? Sure did. That was part of the fun. Walking through that kind of uncertainty.

8. So...who designs these pants then?

A few questions about this. They are a simple pair of Prada pants that I had bondaged out. Kind of a Dave/Prada design.

9. do you think that local fans will have any chance of getting into the show when you guys do decide to play, or is the guestlist going to be filled with industry types?

Of course! It won't be an industry event. In fact, it won't really be an event, it'll just be a little show. We will figure out a way to make it available to the locals. (Al - If the September show comes to be how about having a drawing for a handful of guest passes on this site? - Exactly!)

10. what are your thoughts on the rock star poker thing you're doing with tommy lee and john rzeznik? do you know either of them from any past run-ins?

Not too many thoughts on the matter, I just love playing cards. I do know Tommy pretty well, but I have never met Johnny. Should be a fun time.

Off...

I Love This One

freaktvOK. I wasn't going to post today but this just rocks. FreAk is really on to something with this one.

1. Question, Syd-era Floyd? Do you like?

Not only do I like, I love.

2. I was just wondering do you have a particular method or some sort of a sequence you undertake when writing songs and putting them together?

Not really, no. We kind of look at it as channeling spirits, each has its own way of making itself known. Sometimes they peak in through bass lines, guitar parts, a drum pattern or a vocal/lyric idea. The best is when they just appear when we are jamming.

3. but being that i just saw p.diddy's "bad boy for life" video i was wondering if you played on that song or just appeared in the video.

I just appeared in the video, but I got to play it live on Letterman with him. That was a lot of fun.

4. dave have you ever-almost got injured whilst on stage or working out?

Many times, usually it is emotional pain. (j/k)

5. I was wondering if you are going to be doing any vocals on the new songs?

So far I have been doing some back up harmony parts. If we do something from TNO, I will step up, but we have yet to focus on that.

6. there's a story about you in your fucked up days leaving a message in blood on Fiona Apple's dressing room mirror. Is it true?

(Clears throat) Uh... Yeah. That is true. Did I apologize? Kind of in a roundabout way. (through her "people") The actual message read, "Have a great show, love DN."

7. Question, where your into cars,do you like motor sports at all?

I'm not really a big sports fan.

8. Back in your Chili Pepper days I saw you play Wembley arena in London. It wsa an amazing gig (I especially enjoyed the cover of Fugazi's Waiting Room) and you sang one of the songs yourself, do you remember what the song was?

It was either the Velvet Underground's Heroin or Venus in Furs... Can't remember but those are the only ones I ever sang with them.

9. You mentioned at some point that you don't like exercises where you have to get on the ground....

I really don't. I do a lot of ab stuff on benches. I dunno, just an OCD issue I guess.

10. How did you feel about Mulder and Scully hooking up on the X-files?

I just finished season three so I don't know. I missed the X-Files back in the day as it was a time in my life where I didn't retain much information. For all I know, I have seen every one of them. You know what I mean?

11. hey dave, whats the craziest fan encounter you have ever had?

I one time cut my tongue up really bad trying to impersonate Darth Vader. I guess I just got too close to the blades.

12. When you were addicted was your father in your life and what were his feelings on your lifestyle?

It really bummed him out of course, but he was always a great friend and never turned his back on me. God, I love him. Thanks Dad!

13. Speaking of 'gratitude', have you heard Pete DiStefano's new solo album, and if you have, what did you think of it?

I think it is great and I am even more happy for him and proud of him. Takes a lot of time and commitment to do a solo record.

14. You say your first tattoo was of a pig is that anything to do Floyd and their Pig?

Could be...

15. Do you and Carmen plan on having kids?

Yes, we do, but for the time being, our little Yorkie is a full time job.

Community

freaklogoLet me just start by saying how much you guys rule! I am loving the vibe here. Today we put together a song called Half Hearted. A very cool little jam. Some of the other song titles are Loophole, She Won’t Last, Ashes, Unholy Ghost, Outsider and Nothing Wrong With Me. Things are going really great and most importantly, we are having a great time. We are thinking about a September show, God willing. I’ll keep you in the loop. More than likely it’ll be in some little club in L.A. My wife is in New York right now so tonight is all about X-Files and Splinter Cell… Who knows? Maybe I’ll even dial up some adult programming on cable. Oh yeah, thanx to FreAk for the cool image.

1. I was just wondering if you have heard of the new MetallicA movie coming out "Some Kind of Monster" and if you plan on seeing it.

I really am looking forward to that movie.

2. when did you get your first tattoo and what was it? And would you agree to say that it is kind of addictive?

I was 17. It was the pig on my left arm. Addictive? For me, yes.

3. Do you mind if I post a few TNO tabs up in a few weeks?

Please, feel free.

4. today I've come across pictures of you and Carmen grocery shopping this past Saturday...doesn't that just drive you crazy!?!?

That is so weird, we hardly ever go grocery shopping! I guess it’s no big deal.

5. I know when you said trust no one you dont belive in that ne more but why did you say that in the first place?

I guess I just wasn’t very trust worthy myself. I kind of used my past to excuse my behavior and that really ended up biting me in the ass.

6. You always smoke on stage, but I've never seen you light a ciggarette, do you have an assistant who does this for you and then hands you the ciggarette from below the stage or something?

Yeah, as terrible as it sounds, my tech lights them for me.

7. what is your favourite Science Fiction film of all time?

2001

8. I want to ask you where do you get the strength to talk about it???

I suppose the strength comes from knowing that my experience could potentially be helpful to someone or bring a little hope. You know what they say, even it you can help one person, its worth while.

9. Hey Dave, do you seriously have a stylist? If so i kinda think thats lame.

Well, yes I do, but the word stylist is misleading. Many would call stylists professional shoppers. They kind of bring you stuff and you pick out what you want to purchase. I am the worst shopper. I hate to drive around, look for parking, go in… blah, blah, blah. My wife, however, lives for it. Lame or not, my stylist rules!!!

10. I was just wondering what you thought about all the conspiracy theories regarding Kurt's death and if you have read any of the books that have come out about him and his death?

I have not read any of the books, but I just morn his loss and save the conspiracy issues for the fun stuff like U.F.O.’s, Black Helicopters and Government cover-ups.

Peace,

DN

SWK/AMW

dave_spread_iconNormally I wouldn't post a link like this, but in light of some of the posts I have read regarding the loss of a loved one, it seemed timely. I suppose my point is that I relate and it gets better. I taped the show, AMW, a few months ago. I guess it airs on Saturday... trippy.

On a lighter side, the Star Wars Kid. I'm a huge fan of his and I plan to pay tribute to him in some way within the next few weeks. I will definitely let you know when that happens. Thank you to Zero for the link.

Here is an old version of Sunny Day.

1. as a guitar player, i wondered how old you were when you started playing

When I was 11. Technically, I should be much better by now!

2. Have you ever worked with Dave Grohl? and what do you think about him?

Never worked with him, although I have met him several times. I think he is amazingly talented and very funny. He is the real deal, as they say.

3. put rain/snow/sunshine in order you like.

Rain, snow and sunshine, just as you have it there! I really dig the overcast dark moody vibe like in London or Seattle.

4. Do you have any advice on what to do to not fight all the time?

We have kind of learned to accept each other's defects. In fact, we have learned to love the things about each other that can sometimes drive us crazy, but in a healthy way. One can feel if a situation is unhealthy at it's core. Good luck.

5. What are your favorite songs on your album Trust No One?

Not For Nothing and Slow Motion Sickness.

6. Hey Papi, Does Carmen ever play playstation with u?

She is all about the old school games like Galaga and Ms. Pac Man. She gets VERY competitive!

7. What are your favorite meditation techniques? Zen? SRF?

I am not really schooled, I just do whatever feels right for the day. I suppose I would call it reflective quiet time.

8. Do you still see music in "Colors"?

I do. That is why I love so many layers and effects. My approach in the studio is way different from live. Studio time is like painting and a live show is like drawing. (I have no idea what any of that means! Scratch that... Yes, I love the colors of music.)

9. you said 1 of the songs on One Hot Minute that you didnt like was Tear Jerker...is this true?

I really love that song. You know, it's about Kurt. We wrote it in Hawaii right after the news broke.

10. Would you take a picture of Carmen as she is waking up in the morning and post it here?

Actually there is a picture of her sleeping in the book. SHHHHHHHHH! Don't tell her!

11. You know those pictures that were posted of you a few days ago, were you wearing Speedos??

Ha... I don't think so, I think they were just underwear. But, Speedos. Hmmmmm. You may have something there. I better call my stylist!

12. So, there seems to be a lot more side-chatter going on now here than there originally was. What's your take on this?

Actually, it has been really great. If by side chatter you mean people talking among themselves I love it. Community dude!

13. can you please keep us posted on any CF shows on the horizon?

For sure.

14. What/who inspired you to be a musician when you were young?

My cousin, Dan Navarro and Jimi Hendrix.

15. Grand National, my favorite car of them all. My friend just got one and I have yet to give it a spin. 87 or 88 dave?

I thought it was an 86... Must be an 87. Thanx. I need to at least SOUND like I know what I'm talking about.

May The Force Be With You...

dave_spread_iconNothing really that new to report. A lot of writing, rehearsing and all that. You all know about the Star Wars Kid, right? It'll make sense eventually.

1. what was your opinion on the movie "requiem for a dream"

Loved it!

2. What's your respond to all that "Dave became a media whore"

Honestly, I have been dealing with that since the RHCP days. I pay it no mind, but it used to bother me. I guess now, it's all about just doing what makes me happy. Who knows? Perhaps it's true!

3. Your now married to your Carmen, so do you trust people or is there still an invisible barrier that's always present?

I'd say that when I made TNO, I really felt that way. I later learned that it was my issue and how I chose to view the world that made me lose trust. Still, the album documents a time, but I certainly don't feel that way anymore. In spite of my efforts, I have been proven wrong, thank God.

4. Hey Dave, which the best thing in a marriage?

There are so many things I love about it. I guess having a partner who you can count on and truly be yourself with is up there on the scale. The 'no secrets' policy really helps.

5. Hey Dave, I was wondering if you could post the lyrics to "Somebody Else"?

I saw her on the street today. I thought she was somebody else. I met her last September. I thought she was somebody else.

6. Oh yeah he wants to know Playstation or X-Box?

I have both but I prefer Playstation. I lack the seven fingers per hand to operate the X controller. Remember, I am 37. I grew up with a stick and a button.

7. Gibson Les Paul or PRS 24

Different animals but similar. I have both. I find that for live shows, the PRS is a lot lighter.

8. You think that music is a serious business or it's a way of expression (or therapy) so direct that humor appears inappropriate.

Sense of humor is a great thing in music. When I made TNO, there wasn't really anything that funny to me.

9. Are you a big car fan? What's your current fleet

1987 Buick Grand National (a gift from Carm after she did some investigating with my friends), 2004 Hummer...

10. I was wondering if you've felt the "itch" to get a new tat. If so, what would it be?

Carmen and I plan to get our wedding date soon. 11/22/03

11. I feel I can't do my regular business because how do I go back to my regular routine? (regarding a death of a friend)

It sounds hard, but you just have to power through. It'll get easier in time. Stay in the moment and just do the next thing. Don't look at the whole day, just the task at hand.

12. Luiz, I agree with everybody here. You just have to follow your heart. I just have to say that I think it is so amazing how supportive you all are to one another. The love you have shown Hector and Luiz is awesome. What a great place. I am honored to host it.

13. Did you ever release the book of photo-booth pictures, or do you still plan to?

October of this year.

14. I stayed up Saturday night to hear you on CFR...didn't know you weren't going to be on! Will you be on next week?

I will be joining the guys on Saturday.

15. I guess Dave that being a Floyd fan has influenced your work in some ways?

Definitely!

Be well,

Dave

Sunday Morning 2

dave_spread_icon1. Speaking of Pink Floyd. Did you see the Roger Waters tour in 2000 w/ Snowy White and Doyle Bramhall II on guitars?

Oh yes, a must see for any Floyd fan.

2. Does a woman's tears have effect on you? what do you do when Carmen cries?

A heavy effect. I just be there for her, hold her, try not to "solve" anything for a while and just listen.

3. what do you think of rick rubin, what encounters have you had with him?

Rick is the coolest most talented little bitch! I have worked with him many times over the years and we always have a laugh and a great time! He is a great producer and a great friend.

4. Do you have a favourite Marilyn Manson album?

Antichrist. I consider it a modern classic. There is nothing not amazing on that thing.

5. When you and C.E go to clubs, how do you deal with the dancing "obligation" factor? Do you Dance with her or just sit and watch her dance with others?

I am the world's worst dancer and my wife is one of the best. I usually struggle through a song or two, then turn it over to her and her girlfriends. It's kind of hot watching them go for it. Never had to sit there and not be fully entertained.

6. When u think about the past and everything you've done and been thru, Do you have any regrets?

No, I don't have any as all of my past has lead me to where I am now.

7. Can you read sheet music or do you play by ear?

I would say that I cannot read music. If I absolutely had to, I could fake my way through (counting lines and so forth), but I really do not enjoy it. That's just me. I like the spontaneous unknown.

8. When can we expect your and Carmen's sex tape to 'leak' on the internet?

You know, if we had one, there would be no leak, I would just put it up here!!!

9. hey dave, whats this about a video called against the sky? was it supposed to come out? what happened, will it not be released?

I think that had a lot to do with cocaine psychosis. It doesn't exist... sorry about that. It read better than it looked, so we turned it into the book and scrapped the video.

10. I have both the "Spread" Alnum and "Trust No One", both are amazing, but why did Chad not make it onto the final album?

By the time I actually got around to it and went to finish the thing, he was deep into RHCP world and I needed to re-cut a lot of stuff. Just an availability issue more than anything.

11. Tits or ass man????????

Honestly, I am a face man. I guess I lucked out with my wife. Triple threat!

12. Dave, can you give us an idea of what Circle of the Noose sounds like?

I remember it being an acoustic jam with drums and some electric overdubs. Breaking the Girl-ish. BTW: To the guy who has asked a few times, I can't find the question, I never did get to meet Hillel.

13. how do you keep daily journaling from becoming yet another thing that HAS to be done?

I really look at it as a great deal. Five or ten minutes a day for peace of mind and clarity. I'd rather spend the few minutes in the morning than deal with a day long drama.

14. please tell Chris/"to the mystery woman" that I think she is beautiful!!!! By the way what's her name?

Sorry bro, we have no idea who you are seeking. Some mysteries are meant to go unsolved.

15. was it true you continued using 'til late 2000? I'm sorry for posting another drug question, but I'm just curious to know how it all went down.

Well, yes off and on. Not a happy time. But, hey... It's all good now! No regrets.

Have a great Sunday. I have a busy week so I'll check in as often as I can, but things may slow down just a tad. I will, however stay updated myself via Sidekick.

Sunday Morning

dave_spread_iconSunday morning. The wife and the dog are still asleep... computer time! Coffee with the birds. Sometimes a man needs his little cave. This is one of those times. On Friday, Carmen and I did a lot of pre-shooting for an awards show... The G-Phoria show. It is gonna be really cool, not to mention I get a chance to play all the yet to be released games. I'm looking forward to Metal Gear 3, myself. Later today, Neil Strauss comes by and we put the final comb through our book before we turn it in on Tuesday. Until then, it's kind of all about Splinter Cell. Yesterday I took a break from the Camp Freddy radio show, as I needed a long deserved day off. Those guys, Billy and Matt, did a great job anyway with guest Michael Des Barres. What pros they are. I'm kind of the class clown on that show, but I will be back next Saturday.

I found an old version of Avoiding the Angel, from way back when it was just called, Angel. This was one of the tracks I worked on with Mark Plati in New York. My favorite thing about it is the HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey) samples that I never got clearance to use. Sorry for all the old files, but until there are new ones, it'll have to do. I just like the idea of having a source of unreleased and hard to find music.

Out of the Garage!

dave_spread_icon
OK. Here is that version of The Bed. (Agian with Chad Smith.) This Lou Reed song appears on the album, Berlin. If you haven't heard the original, you got to check it out. It'll tear your f@!#ing heart out.

The Bed

Next up, a track that originally appeared on the Rhimorse EP. I think it was later released on some Japanese import or something like that. I did this at my house very late at night. I was driving down the street after a painful breakup and I was feeling really sad. I saw this girl on the sidewalk and I thought, "Hey, she's really cute! Maybe I CAN be attracted to someone new after all!" As I got closer, I was shocked to discover that the girl, was in fact, the very same girl that had broken my heart. (insert game show loser music) So I went home and this song is what came of it. ("I'm thinking... I'm sorry!" is Aimee Echo, from theStart... following the Not For Nothing outro vamp with Chad Smith.)

Somebody Else

BTW: I found a VHS copy of the Venus video, so as soon as I can rock it Quicktime style, I will.

1. Are you going to post some new pictures for us Dave?

I would love to, but the truth is that I don't really have any new ones. Not yet, anyway. A lot of people have been posting links to stuff, and I appreciate it. As soon as we have stuff to put up, it'll be up.

2. When were your comments on VH1 I love the 90’s filmed?? How’s the set up there (i.e. are everyone’s comments filmed on the same day, do they send you footage of what you’re covering before going…??)

Here is how that works. When you go down to the studio for some unrelated story, for instance, Carmen and I were doing something about the show, they ask if you are interested in also commenting on the 90's thing. So, they sit you down and just ask you a few unrehearsed things for about a half an hour. Really simple and easy.

3. What made you start taking drugs again during the.....a-hem..."relapse tour" after staying clean for all those years?

I had been clean for five years and just kind of stopped doing the things that kept me clean such as prayer, meditation and being of service. I got all, "self-involved". Naturally, once you stop taking your medicine, you get sick again. Good question.

4. Time for me to rack your brain. What was the deal with the homage to Rene Russo a few years back?

She just rules. Carmen even said it would be OK if, well, you know... BTW: Any one have the picture of Rene and I from back then? (an obviously Photoshopped B&W)

(Thank you, Christina. ATTN: F.B.I. Red Flag!)

5. Has your opinion on "One Hot Minute" changed since its release almost 9 years ago?

I love it. When I hear it, I can actually hear myself growing as a guitar player as a result of playing with those guys.

6. Serious Man ... DAVE! Listen up! ... can I make an lyric to this song??? I would like to play it with my band!

Be my guest, you have official permission.

7. BTW - can you shed some light on Eric Avery for us all? Why didn't he want to relapse?

You know, that is really for Eric to say. I know he is happy and touring with Alanis. As for an earlier question, yes, Flea and I appear on You Oughtta Know. Our friend Jimmy Boyle was remixing the track and asked us to join him. In fact, Jimmy was responsible for how the song sounded, not the credited producer. No offense to him (the producer), he's awesome, but that is the truth. Odd, but Chris Chaney was with Alanis before I met him. She is kind of the Bermuda Triangle of music.

8. I was wondering the date when Carmen and you started to go out.

It was November 10th, 2000.

9. I just have this really bad feeling at the moment...and unlike other times, where I haven't cared if I cut or not...this time, I feel like I'm going to betray someone, I dont know who, maybe it's you cause you said you managed to stop...and I can't.

DBM, you may want to try to see someone or find a support group. I understand your confusion, I really do. For me, I just got to the point where enough was enough. I wish I could help more, but I fear giving advice about something so serious. I would seek the input of a professional.

10. You say your a big Pink Floyd fan me too!! My favourite album being Animals, which is yours?

I love Animals too, but I would really have to say that The Wall, is just perfect!

Thank you for your questions, comments and links...

Iris

dave_spread_icon
This is one of my favorite tracks from the Deconstruction album... Iris, named after the unborn daughter of drummer and father to be, Michael Murphy. The song is instrumental and features Eric Avery on bass. We wrote the track while on a trip to San Francisco. In fact, before Michael Murphy's wife was pregnant, the song was called, San Francisco.

Random Q & A

dave_spread_iconLuiz, I say, quit the day job! Good work my man. Thank you everyone for the old files. It's time for me to start thinking about expanding this site. I guess I'll keep putting up old stuff until we have new stuff to put up. We have started recording rehearsals so maybe I can get everyone to agree on a song of horrendous quality for a temporary upload!

Hungry

Another Real Player file, shot by Gavin Bowden, that features Chad Smith on drums and as the star. Poor quality, but what can you do? I have a cameo in the "film" he is watching.

1. Dave I've heard of a secret track on your record "TNO" under the name "The Bed" or something like that, is that true because I don't have it on my copy (or I think).

Cool. I will get it. I think it was on an import or something. It's a Lou Reed cover. Very dark and heavy song.

2. I jus feeling a little shit right now, maybe I should barge on his wedding day or something crazy like that -- sure put a look on his face hey.

I would say, that is probably the worst idea. Let him go, and just know it gets better. Don't let pride cloud your decision making. I would bet that you would feel worse if you barged.

3. Just a quick question...on "Til..." what was teh Portishead song you were thinking of using for your wedding song...I'm a big Portishead fan and was just curious.

Yes, it was. We love the Portishead.

4. There are pics of Dave and Trent at the mixing board together, it's too cool. Check this:

I gotta tell you, that's not me in those pictures.

5. Who were the members in your live band, I've searched all over the place cant find jack all...

Bass - Miiko, Drums - Angel, Guitar - Dave Kushner

6. Do you think you have gained a lot from Carmen, like different outlooks/appreciations on things?

I think we have helped each other a lot over the years, but a lot of our luck comes from the fact that we were both just over hurting ourselves with destructive behavior when we met.

7. Hey Dave, could you enlighten me please on the tuning for hungry it would make working it out a little easier or is it like rexall in DADAAD

You got it! DADAAD

8. Also during your wedding you had someone in a "eyes wide shut" mask standing at the entrance. What was your take on that movie since of course the director died & not to mention everyone has there own whacky view on the film.

I really liked the movie, but not until the second or third time I saw it. Odd, because I rarely see something more than once if I didn't love it at first. Gotta give stuff a chance I guess.

9. do you have the "L.A. Song video" to put it here? I am dying to watch it.

I don't have it. Anyone?

10. I used to work for a Hollywood fashion designer (Terri King) and way back in 99 or 00 she swore you were going to model in one of her fashion shows (held at Club Makeup). She said you didn't show but I could never tell if she was telling the truth or just messing with me since she knew what a big fan I was.

You know what? She is right! In fact, I owe her an apology for that so thank you for reminding me!

Peace & Love,

DN

Old Venus

dave_spread_iconThank you, Justin, for the Venus in Furs video. I thought I had totally lost that thing. I have re-posted it here:

Venus

As Justin pointed out, the file requires a Real Player. I'll get it together and start a proper download section. FYI, Chad Smith is on drums and plays the "beast" during the play. The clip was done by Gavin Bowden many years ago. This is a different version of Venus than the one on TNO. (Parents: This clip could be considered, mature material... although some might consider it quite immature.)

Tuesday Check In

dave_spread_iconLet me ask you this. These videos, were they full length or just clips? I know what you are talking about but I don't remember ever uploading the full length versions. I'll try to find them but I don't even know where the machine I stored them on is. As for the CD with the book thing, I'd love to do that, there just happens to be some kind of "legal" thing that prevents it from happening. Oh well, I guess I'll just sneak the songs out here, one at a time over a period of time. The Bangles thing. My cousin, Dan Navarro wrote some stuff for them. Maybe that's why you thought it was me. I think his credit was D. Navarro. Happens all the time. No worries.

We've been just working away in the studio, writing some pretty cool stuff I think. Different from anything we have ever done collectively and separately. I'll try to keep the site updated as often as possible. As for downloads, I'm working on it. All my old stuff is still in our garage from the move. However, I will, as time passes, brave the dust and the boxes and find some files to upload until we have something new we can all agree to make public, even if they are demos or rehearsal recordings of poor quality. Someone asked about a complete list of appearances, but I don't have one. I couldn't even begin to remember all the stuff I have worked on over the years. As for the Grohl & Reznor thing? Would I do it if they asked? Put it this way. I would even go out there just to wash their cars if they asked. Make sure their drinks are cold. I can't wait to hear what they do together.

Old Stuff

dave_spread_iconOK. Two new downloads. The first one is a really old version of Hungry from the Spread days, kind of a demo but I think I like it more than the TNO version. It was recorded by Dave Schiffman and has Chad Smith on drums, I play bass and guitar, etc. Lyrics are slightly different. The hamster line is in reference to when I had two hamsters when I was young, and one ate the other. That was when I learned about death. Was I loaded? Yes. I think I put those guys through hell! Sorry, Chad... Sorry, Dave.

hungryearly.mp3

The next one is a song off of Deconstruction called Fire in the Hole. This track, written by Eric Avery and I, features Michael Murphy on drums and Gibby from the Butthole Surfers on vocals. An interesting jam.

Kashmir with Maynard

dave_spread_iconAs promised, here is the link for that Kashmir jam that Perk, Chaney and I did with Maynard. Matt Rhode is doing all the cool keyboard stuff.

Also, here is a version of The Who's Sparks I did with producer and bassist Mark Plati. I wish I could tell you who is on drums, but I was so loaded back then, I honestly forgot. There is another version with Chad Smith playing drums, but I haven't located it yet.

Q & A, CPS, IRC

dave_spread_iconWow! So many responses, so little time. I reckon I can get to at least ten tonight, so I'll start with that. Don't forget, I simply choose at random. I try to not go over something already addressed in earlier posts. Thanx for all the support regarding the CPS. I had a really great time and it looks like I'm gonna do one next season too. I would also like to thank everyone who posted information regarding the live chat. I have started the ball rolling on that and I will probably have an update online by tomorrow. We are thinking irc. I like Mortisha8's idea of a topic. Any suggestions? BTW, I got my program here: http://ircle.com/

1. Out of all the red hot chili peppers who has the biggest package?

I don't know for sure, but my money is on Chad Smith.

2. How is the songwriting process different with the new band?

Pretty interesting. We do a lot of jamming on certain stuff, and just kind of let the vibe flow. We also take more of a song writing approach at times, the idea is that we will end up with a variety of styles and compositional ideas. An initial riff, rarely remains the original riff for very long. We allow ideas to grow if they are good, and go if they are not.

3. Do you ever dream about the drugs?

Sure I do. We call those "slip" dreams. Very common for those who have stopped using.

4. One of my favourite pics...Is there a story behind it? Does it mean anything?

No. Just me and my dog, Daisy. She is a Yorkie. I was doing a photo shoot and Carmen brought her with us. I just ended up being a prop for her.

5. And does journal writing help you keep your spirits up? Matter of fact what keeps your spirits up period?

Yes, it really does. In fact, prayer and faith in just knowing that everything is going to turn out ok helps keep my spirits up. When I think back at all the stuff I thought I'd never get through, and realize that I have, it makes any current issue kind of lose its power.

6. What did you bury the CD for? Was it really bad or something?

Bad? No. Was it something I thought was really good? No. I guess it was kind of an art project that did me a lot of good to do and helped me through a hard time. It made sense to me, I just thought it wouldn't to anyone else. A lot of the stuff, however, ended up in one way or another on TNO.

7. Saw the gig that you did in Amsterdam (absolutely awesome guys by the way!!!) Now maybe you can settle an ongoing argument for me, did you fall or did you jump into the crowd? Whichever, Good on you dude for carrying on playing, must have hurt!

I, uh... I, fell.

8. Did you ever get the opportunity to meet Kurt?

No, I never did. I wish I had though. I know that Flea and he were pretty close.

9. you said you did very light weights 2x a week. as a certified personal trainer i'm wondering how you stay ripped with good size on VERY light weights?

Lots of cardio, no carbs after 3pm, and high repitition on the weights. For instance, bicep curls, I only use 8 or 10 pounds, but I do 3 sets of 30 reps.

10. Being that I myself do this, I was wondering if you have ever cut yourself, or wanted to?

Yes, I used to do that. I sopped years ago. Try checking this out.

http://vinland.org/scamp/institute/dsh.html

Well, as I said, I'll post about some kind of chat thing tomorrow. Goodnight all,

Dave

Perkins Reply

The last week has been very productive. The new BANYAN music has been mixed and sounds great[thanx to Brian Virtue].The release date is October 12. The art work is looking really cool as well. I am very proud of the music and the performances are slamming!
Now for the new band, Dave has told you about the practice room. I am loving it.We are rocking at full volume, full power, full energy and comming up with some next level shit.It is getting difficult to fall asleep with all this rock music in my head!
Here are a few replies to some of you:[sorry it took so long]
SEATTLE, I would love to do a song with Peter Gaberial.I think my favorite session would have to be working with Trent on Downward Spiral.
J, I will think about posting old music but I am leaning towards NOT TO.Thanx for checking out the art work on the BANYAN c.d. Cindy is taking photos and hopes to have a show.I will keep the info flowing.
BEN, I jam with Taylor, and HELLRIDE[my side band with Watt and DiStefano] has done shows with his band Chevy Metal. Also Taylor played some timbali on the last BANYAN c.d.And I joined the Foo Fighters on stage for a triple drum solo. But no, we do not have a project together...YET.
SANDERS, We have no exact formula.Sometimes we jam, sometimes we get real quite and work on one part over and over. There are so many ways to play and write together, it is a conversation with instuments. It just happens.
PATRICK, I don't I have the patience to give lessons.I do enjoy jamming with other drummers.I can trade fours all day long when the groove is on. Two full drum sets can be a cluster fuck but it can also be polyrhythmic and inpirational. There is a lot drummers can learn from eachother by playing together.
I have to go back to reality now. HAVE A MUSICAL WEEKEND!
I Saw Rush...OH YES...LOVED IT

Post Rehearsal

dave_spread_iconHey, Giovanni. Hope your week lightens up.

1. When are we gonna have a LIVE chat with you?

I'm down. How do we set that up? Someone tell me!

2. how many CDs do you own (at last count, anyway?) Are there any you're ashamed/proud as hell of owning?

Not as many as one might think, but the ones I do own, I own with pride.

3. A band I haven’t heard you talk about is Tool.

Love Tool. The last show of Lolla last year, Maynard did Kashmir with Chaney, Perk and I. It was awesome!

4. Can you take us through your training schedule that you do? is it mostly cardio or weights? How early do you wake up to do this?

I really mix it up. I try to not stay in the gym for more than an hour, I'd burn out otherwise. I do very light weights two days a week and the rest of the week is either cardio or yoga. For cardio, I switch between machines as I get burnt on those too.

5. "Slow Motion Sickness"; maybe a strange question but what was your reason/explanation to write this song?

It's about kicking heroin and having to face the wreckage you created while feeling like a raw nerve.

6. Oh, and what happened with the unreleased album that lived in the coffin?

Buried it.

7. hey dave, any recs for a good tatt parlor in LA?

I like Mark Mahoney's Shamrock Tattoo on Sunset.

8. One of my questions is when you were younger like in H.S or in your'e early 20's did have low self-esteem or not liked yourself physically and if thats the reason why you started to work out? Is that why you always used dark sun glasses more often in the early Jane's concerts?

Well, I definitely had low self esteem and that probably accounts for the glasses back then, but I think the reason I got into working out was because when I got clean, I just wanted to be healthier. As many addicts do, when I cleaned up, I became addictive with even the healthy stuff.

9. With the music inductry in such utter disarray now, what's the process in getting your new band up and running and in a position to be heard?

Hmmmm. My best answer is to do shows, shows, shows, create a fan base and fire up a web site. No better way to reach the people. The best advice I can give you is to just do it because you love it.

10. I read that in 1983 you were witness to the brutal murder of both your mother and aunt. Why do you think your life was spared on that terrible day?

That is true. Why spared? I don't know but I thank God for granting me the grace to live.

goodnight,

Dave

CPS

dave_spread_iconThe support here has been incredible! Thank you all so much for participating. What's been going on? Well, we have been jamming at Perk's house for a while now, which has been great, but we decided to finally take it to a full on rehearsal space with a proper P.A. and monitors and mics and A/C. We start that today. Steve I asked me if I'd be into doing any TNO songs like Hungry in our set. I have to run it by Chris and Stephen, but, sure, I'm into that. Could make for an interesting variety of music.

On Thursday night, July 8th, I will be appearing on Celebrity Poker Showdown, on Bravo. What a blast that was. I was not only able to play Texas Hold'em, my favorite way to waste time and money, but I was able to help out my favorite charity, The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
Carmen and I have been involved with them for several years now. I was able to donate $5000.00 as a result of the appearance on CPS.

Your questions have been great! I was able to get to fifteen of them today:

1. you often speak highly of trent reznor and nine inch nails, i was wondering if for some unforeseen reason they had parted ways with robin, would you consider trying to fill that gap and become a member of the band?

God, that is a tough one. Honestly, I think I would rather remain a fan. I was able to do a couple of songs with him back in 1991, and that was such a rush. I also did a re-mix with him on Further Down the Spiral. For those experiences, I count my blessings.

2. Was that a real eel you slammed against the table? Also, is/was Stephen really disgusted by fruits?

No, it absolutely was not. Yes, he absolutely is.

3. Dave, I tried to order your instructional guitar video, a month later I got an email that it was no longer available. Help me find it please. Also is it available on DVD?

I have no idea how to find that thing. It is not on DVD and I don't even own one or I'd send it to you.

4. My question is have you ever jammed with a girlfriend? Or does Carmen play any instruments?

My ex-girlfriend, Monet, (still a great friend) had a band called Nancy Raygun. I did some shows with her. Carmen plays the drums and we have done lots of jamming. She likes to play Zeppelin and White Stripes.

5. Is it true that you and PRS are makin a navarro siginture and is it gonna be in a se model?

We have been toying around with the idea. It's not certain yet, but that would be awesome. If it ever happens, I'll let you know.

6. I was just wondering, with this new band, are you going to be experimenting with any new ideas (e.g. new styles) than previously? Also, are you trying out any new equipment (i.e. new guitar, effects pedals)?

We are always open to anything. So far it has been a basic rock band vibe. When we get into production is when we experiment with stuff. As long as we still sound like four guys playing music, anything goes.

7. Is your MTV show available on DVD?

I think that comes out in October too.

8. If it's true about how Axl Rose asked you a while ago to join the new GNR and you declined citing your CD as the reason, has he contacted you after that and after Buckethead left?

That was years ago and I declined because Eric A and I were doing Decon. I finally got to work with him on a song that appears on The End of Days soundtrack.

9. can you explain the meaning of the roman numerals on your fingers?

My left hand has 13, 13, my lucky number and my right hand has my birthday, 6/7/67.

10. What is your morning routine like? Do you make your bed? Do you drink coffee?

Start the coffee, make my bed, read and journal (one page a day), pray then hit the gym. It's a lot better than what I used to do. Many years ago I would wake up in a panic, find something electronic to pawn, see the dope man and waste the day away in misery. I am a lot happier this way!

11. i know this man named david who i am dating, and he has lumpy cum, i am not sure if you are familiar with it but it is equivalent to the consistency of cottage cheese, im sure you have heard of a lot of vanerial diseases, should I be worried? should I stop swollowing?

I really have no idea what that is all about. Sounds like a question for Dr. Drew. I looked it up online and found this: "You are having sex far too often. Those lumps are in fact small chunky bits of the lining of your urethra." Still, I'd ask a doctor.

12. did you play with Dave Kushner (Velvet Revolver) on your solo tour?

Yes, he has been a great friend for many years.

13. Do you still believe in the Love/Christmas Theory? You and Carmen seem to be the living proof that such a thing as true love really exists, so...:)

I'd say no. The cool thing about having a theory is being able to disprove it.

14. I have recently downloaded the Hungry screensaver (which is really cool) but I am wondering what the significance is with a poodle and a turtle (if any)? :)

The poodle was Carmen and the turtle was me! I also just liked the juxtaposition of the cute cartoons against the dark lyrics.

15. When did you start wearing make-up and feminine clothes on a day to day basis off stage as well as on?

Kind of a long time ago. It's just fun to change up the vibe from time to time. I don't do it as much now, but it is still fun to have the option. There is a fine line, which I have crossed over and over, between getting into character and being a character!

That's it for now,

Dave

Text in a Few Hours

dave_spread_icon1. I've been looking for your book: Don't Try This at Home for ages now and it seems nowhere in the UK stocks it. Do you know of any US sites that I could get it from?

It's actually not out yet. Try Amazon or something like that around October or November.

2. What kind of performances do you prefer large or small scale?

I like both for different reasons, but we are going to stick to small intimate gigs for quite a while.

3. Do you know wes borland? If so what is your take on him and his music?

I don't know him but I appreciate his work. His solo stuff is very trippy.

4. When you and Carmen have kids and they´re in their early teens and ready to embark on their own chemically enhanced journeys, how do you plan to approach the subject of drug use/abuse?

I hope to be able to shed some light on the subject and I will certainly be forthcoming with my experiences, but I also know that kids will be kids and I'll have to be willing to deal with whatever comes along with that.

5. I was wondering, do you have faith in a higher force, and if so, which?

I do. It is a God of my own personal understanding, which is nice because my views are always open to change and expansion.

6. So Dave.............this "Circle of the Nooose" song????????????????????????????

I love that song. I hope that the Peppers someday put it out or at least make it available on the Internet for downloads. I don't have a copy or I would stick it up myself.

7. Anyway, He's (Billy Duffy) spoken very highly of you in the past and was wondering what your take on him and The Cult were?

Duffy is amazing. He is consistently on point with his playing. I've never heard him hit a sour note. The Cult really influenced me when the Love album came out. It is always an honor to jam with him.

8. Hi Dave, I just saw an old rerun of 'Cribs' with you on it. Cool house, I was just wondering if that's where you still live 'cause it looked different than your house on 'Til Death Do Us Part'.

Thank you. We have since moved.

9. One stupid question: You said you play CDs from your own collections, so who the Soundgarden "LTL" belongs to?

That, was mine!

10. Dave, have you ever seen the Embrace comic books that Carmen was involved with?

I know about it but I haven't seen it. She doesn't have a copy. :(

Peace,
Dave

Happy 4th of July!

dave_spread_iconWhat's up? Happy Fourth of July! Yesterday was a great day. I ran into Ellen from the board at the Coffee Bean in Hollywood. It was nice to put a face with the name. If our paths ever cross, please do say hello. Steve I and I went to Danny's to finish up one of our songs. It's called, "She Won't Last." It's kind of a dark ballad with a kind of Massive Attack meets rock vibe. After that I went to the radio station where Aimee from theStart joined us for about a half an hour for some chatter and music. Matt Sorum was back from his tour and It was great to see him too. Anyway, a few answers.

1. What are the cool jeans you wear in the Marshall Mode 4 advert, are they Henry Leute or something?

Those were actually from Chrome Hearts, but the guy you are thinking of is named Henry Duarte.

2. Even though you never graduated from high school, did you end up getting your GED???

Yes, I did.

3. Did you ever look up to a role model of your own?

Sure I did. Hendrix, Page, Ash and my 8th grade literature teacher Ms. Dunne.

4. Out of curiosity, d'you still have that coffin in your living room?

No, I had to get rid of it as it didn't go with the new curtains. (J/K) I just got tired of it. I gave it away years ago.

5. As a recovering heroin addict, do you still get mental or physical cravings for it? How difficult was the withdrawal? Did you go through detox?

I haven't had a craving in years, but I can say that the detox was just horrible. I went into a facility for detox and was medicated, but even that was just the worst thing ever. If I knew way back when that it would feel that horrific, I might have reconsidered my paths of experimentation.

6. So I ask who are your favorite visual artists?

I love Francis Bacon. He is my number one favorite painter.

7. I forgot to write: do you ever look back on photo's from early days and cringe?

Oh, of course, but I cringe with a slight hint of laughter. Hell, I even cringe when I look at present day photos.

8. Have you ever considered covering a Motley song? If so, which would you like to do? Oh yeah, and which is your fave Motley album?

Perk and I are all about Too Fast For Love. We always rock Live Wire when we are just screwing around in rehearsal or backstage.

9. There are different reports on your actual height: anywhere from 5'6 to 5'10. Just exactly how tall are you?

5'9. (When I stand up straight.)

10. Why PRS guitars?? I think they are great...but everyone from creed to nickleback are using them and it seems like a trend.

Maybe so, but I have been playing those since 1991, so trend or not, they remain my guitar of choice.

11. By the way, just wondering.....do you like "Contraband" by Velvet Revolver?

I love it for several reasons. The songs are killer and they are all close friends of mine, but even more importantly, I love what it has done for rock within the industry. It has made execs go, "Wait a minute, maybe rock isn't dead!"

12. I already own an Epiphone Les Paul, so I am at the moment on the hunt for a singlecoil guitar. Will it be worth it?

You can never go wrong with a great Strat.

13. Im going to hound you on that Danelectro, until one day you respond. What kind is it and what recordings, if any did it make it onto?

Honestly, I don't remember. I know I used it a lot on TNO.

14. What kind of music does Carmen like? And was she ever a fan of Jane's or the Chili Peppers before you got together?

She loves all kinds but she is mostly a fan of Hip Hop. When we met, she really wasn't well versed in either band, although she liked them both. I remember her saying that she really liked that "dog barking song." Cute.

15. hey Dave, if you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead and why?

I'd be a photographer for Maxim Magazine.

Have a really great day today,

Dave

CFR/10

dave_spread_iconTonight from 6pm-8pm is Camp Freddy Radio on Indie 103.1 (check the link for web simulcast) It'll be Billy Morrison from Doheny, Matt Sorum from Velvet Revolver and myself playing some music we love for a couple of hours, taking calls and discussing pretty much whatever we happen to think of. We also have a guest. Aimee Echo from theStart will be joining us for a half hour or so to talk about their new album and play us a few tracks. We always have a really great time!

Just got home from the studio. It's 3:00am, so here are a quick ten questions.

1. any chance of us hearing a preview of what youve been working on sometime?

Yes, I will let you know when we will sneak a demo into the radio show. Should be within the next two weeks or so.

2. Dave:- in a MTV programme called 'At Home with the Chilis' or something, it looked like you had a latex number on??

Yeah, this time looks were not deceiving.

3. Were you ever in any advanced or "gifted" classes back when you were in school?

I actually never graduated from high school.

4. What are your favorite movies/tv shows?

Movies: Anything Woody Allen, TV: Anything crime oriented-documentary or fictional.

5. Any chance you might be writing your short essays on life, love and music again?

A few of those are actually included in the book that is due out in October or November. I'll try to get some newer stuff up.

6. What ever happened to that gold custom Ibanez with the Ultrasonics?

A photographer friend of mine named Chris Cuffaro has what's left of it.

7. Do you have a favorite author Dave?

No, but I like a lot of memoir type stuff. Right now my favorite book is called Wasted, A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia by Marya Hornbacher. Really an intense read.

8. Im going to hound you on that Danelectro, until one day you respond. What kind is it and what recordings, if any did it make it onto?

I am sorry man, I honestly don't know specifically. I know I used it on the Trust No One album quite a bit.

9. Tabs. A lot of questions about tabs.

I don't really have any and I am not even sure how to do it, but I will look into it.

10. It would be wonderful to see you at a UK festival in a year or two, any chance of it happening?

We definitely want to go to Europe, and I suppose we plan to, but first things first. We need to finish the record.

OK. Goodnight. Thank you for checking in.

Lousy Late Night Wrap Up

dave_spread_iconWe just got done working very late over at Danny's house. I'm still a little wiry so I figured I'd get to a few questions before I fired up season 2 of the X-Files on DVD. Fox and Dana always help me fall asleep. First, let's hear it for Luiz who did an excellent job on the Nine Inch Nails cover. Nice work, man.

Anyway, these were chosen randomly so please don't feel slighted if I didn't get to your question. There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers. I will prove this to you now...

1. Just above the cheat sheet...what is the interesting necklace you're wearing?

It's a silver Angel Wing.

2. But in an interview years ago, you said, "I wasn't happy with my guitar playing on that album." Do you still feel that way? What about your playing displeased you?

I think I always feel that way initially, but looking back on it, I'd say that the Decon album has some of my favorite work on it to date.

3. I once read that you said you own one of Kurt's guitars. I was wondering which one?

4. It's a light blue Jaguar. I consider it on loan. If I ever get the chance, I'll probably ask his daughter if she'd like it. That, or ask for her blessing to keep it.

5. DAVE what's up with all of these guitars of yours showing up on ebay? Are they legit?

No! What happens is autograph hounds (not legitimate fans), the kind that track you down in the airport, ask you to sign pick guards, then they stick them on guitars and sell them as if they were yours. The signature is probably authentic, but the guitars were never mine. I have never sold anything on ebay so I can pretty much be certain that they are not ones that I ever played. There might be one or two floating around out there that have been lost or stolen, but those would be the only exceptions.

Know this: I just spent an hour answering questions and this f@#*king program quit on me! (Hence the "lousy" part.) I'm going to bed. At least I can now claim that my answers were all really insightful and interesting, with clever twists. Sorry. I forgot the #1 rule. ABS. Always be saving!

goodnight,
Dave
