I Love This One

freaktvOK. I wasn't going to post today but this just rocks. FreAk is really on to something with this one.

1. Question, Syd-era Floyd? Do you like?

Not only do I like, I love.

2. I was just wondering do you have a particular method or some sort of a sequence you undertake when writing songs and putting them together?

Not really, no. We kind of look at it as channeling spirits, each has its own way of making itself known. Sometimes they peak in through bass lines, guitar parts, a drum pattern or a vocal/lyric idea. The best is when they just appear when we are jamming.

3. but being that i just saw p.diddy's "bad boy for life" video i was wondering if you played on that song or just appeared in the video.

I just appeared in the video, but I got to play it live on Letterman with him. That was a lot of fun.

4. dave have you ever-almost got injured whilst on stage or working out?

Many times, usually it is emotional pain. (j/k)

5. I was wondering if you are going to be doing any vocals on the new songs?

So far I have been doing some back up harmony parts. If we do something from TNO, I will step up, but we have yet to focus on that.

6. there's a story about you in your fucked up days leaving a message in blood on Fiona Apple's dressing room mirror. Is it true?

(Clears throat) Uh... Yeah. That is true. Did I apologize? Kind of in a roundabout way. (through her "people") The actual message read, "Have a great show, love DN."

7. Question, where your into cars,do you like motor sports at all?

I'm not really a big sports fan.

8. Back in your Chili Pepper days I saw you play Wembley arena in London. It wsa an amazing gig (I especially enjoyed the cover of Fugazi's Waiting Room) and you sang one of the songs yourself, do you remember what the song was?

It was either the Velvet Underground's Heroin or Venus in Furs... Can't remember but those are the only ones I ever sang with them.

9. You mentioned at some point that you don't like exercises where you have to get on the ground....

I really don't. I do a lot of ab stuff on benches. I dunno, just an OCD issue I guess.

10. How did you feel about Mulder and Scully hooking up on the X-files?

I just finished season three so I don't know. I missed the X-Files back in the day as it was a time in my life where I didn't retain much information. For all I know, I have seen every one of them. You know what I mean?

11. hey dave, whats the craziest fan encounter you have ever had?

I one time cut my tongue up really bad trying to impersonate Darth Vader. I guess I just got too close to the blades.

12. When you were addicted was your father in your life and what were his feelings on your lifestyle?

It really bummed him out of course, but he was always a great friend and never turned his back on me. God, I love him. Thanks Dad!

13. Speaking of 'gratitude', have you heard Pete DiStefano's new solo album, and if you have, what did you think of it?

I think it is great and I am even more happy for him and proud of him. Takes a lot of time and commitment to do a solo record.

14. You say your first tattoo was of a pig is that anything to do Floyd and their Pig?

Could be...

15. Do you and Carmen plan on having kids?

Yes, we do, but for the time being, our little Yorkie is a full time job.

Where do you ask Dave questions?

Posted by: Pete at July 23, 2004 10:06 AM

Two things Dave, what's your take on Doheny?

This a goofy, unfocused question, but is your new band all about "the rock"?

God I hope so.

Hi Dave,

Sorry to regurgitate....& since you answered the question about the P. Diddy video.....

.....just in case my question got lost in the shuffle....I posted the other day about a video you appeared in for a band called Lifter. (For interested fans; the song was called "Headshot" & MTV showed the video in 96-97, usually on '120 Minutes'.)

Did you actually contribute to their album. It's always cool to hear you performing with different types of musicians other than the usual core group of LA guys you are associated with.

Your contribution brings 'hip' cred to people like Christina Aguilera, who is usually dismissed by rock fans as a caterwauling, empty pop tart....if fans can get past her ridiculous fashion sense & other silliness, they'd agree, the girl has an incredible voice.

I know absolutely nothing about Lifter, but I really enjoyed the song & the video. Of course, it was a very nice surprise when you popped up in their video.

I apologize if you already answered this in another thread. As there doesn't seem to be a 'Search' feature here, I have no idea if you answered the question!

Thanks again~~!

how funny... I'm finishing up watching the X-files season 3 DVD's too. I watched all nine seasons when it was on tv but my budget has only allowed me to buy the first 3. When I'm done, I'll go track down season 4 somewhere :)

If you ever find Terri King to apologize, let me know! I did a yearlong internship for her and she never wound up paying me!! grrrr...

Are there any other LA designers you are currently working with? I'd love to send you some pics of the stuff I got to do for Marilyn Manson, Outkast, etc.

Hi Dave,
First off, great site. It takes balls to be you are your own man, and not care what the riff-raff thinks. Mad props to you.

Question: Are there any unreleased Jane's Addiction songs left in the vaults? I've always heard that only Kettle Whistle and Suffer Some were the only ones from the old days, and they've obviously been re-recorded and officially released. Are there any from old/Jane's or "Strays"-era Jane's that might see the light of day? Inquiring diehard minds want to know!

Posted by: Shawn at July 23, 2004 10:36 AM

Hey Dave, I was just wondering if you had anything to say or any advise about someone who wishes they could be "famous" or become a singer, or do what you and Carmen do. But honestly I think getting into all that is very difficult because I mean you need like someone to "discover" you. I dont know, it was just a thought.

Posted by: Jess at July 23, 2004 10:43 AM

Hi Dave. I have just discovered this site and think it's very cool. It's great that you take the time to communicate directly with fans. I just wanted to let you know what a real inspiration you've been for me musically. I grew up listening to a lot of your music, and continue to do so (I often tried to copy your style in my earlier days!) Nowadays it's a more of a healthy appreciation. Janes Addiction in particular really inspired me to get into playing music and into bands.
Having said all that, I'm struggling to think of a question to ask you!! What about... how many cigarettes do you smoke a day?! (sorry, it's a silly question I know).

samko,
london

Posted by: samko at July 23, 2004 10:47 AM

guys, seriously this is the gayest shit (song titles, group) I have ever heard of. All four of you have OVERESTIMATED YOUR SELF-WORTH as artists. This project will suck so hard it'll have more friction burns the Carmen Electra's snatch after Dennis Rodman got through pile-driving that cum dumpster.

Hey, Dave!

Wicked site! I'm on call, sitting around, not too busy and I come across this site! Forget the patients and the work, I'm sitting here for the next few hours!
I know you've talked about influences before, but more specifically your notes on Up the Beach remind me of Hendrix. Was that a particular influence for you on this track or just your genius?

Posted by: Psych at July 23, 2004 11:27 AM

hey Dave....just read this morning you're a big floyd fan and syd era floyd fan...howzabout syd era syd? esp songs offa the madcap laughs, like terrapin,..late night-just terribly dreamy songs... recently got my hands on TNO-love it! you rock dude! esp love mourning son, very little daylight, slow motion sickness(< big time). The beginning of sunny day reminds me of when the cooling fan in my fridge freezer 'went off' one time a coupla years back- it drove me so nuts I had to record it..(for what that's worth). Wondering about Spread evolving into TNO... At what point in time did you actually start writing your songs?..and while I'm at it..what level of songwriting input did you have in the Jane's days?, Chili's days?... Your guitar work on the Decon album is also incredibly terribly beautiful. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I hope the universe converges and you and Eric A. make another project in the future...
Okay the praises and blessings... Very cool that you are available to the fans so directly. Thanks for being alive and giving the world your guitar channelings.Your playing has been a massive influence on my ears over the years,...a kindred vibe. If i could ever contribute some artwork to the life of your music please don't ever hesitate.(this is for no ther reason but pure homage asking this...)
ps: sad to hear about the demise of Jane's but as Frank Zappa once said (something like) "the universe works perfectly whether we understand it or not"
...to a happy creative future in all forms!
peace love RSM

Hey Dave and Robert,
Good to know Syd lives on this board! Peace and love to both of you!

Dave, the delay on your guitar has blown my mind many a night, much like Barret and Gilmour, your guitar sound is organic and beautiful!

Any chance of a "Piper" tune on the Saturday radio show?

Thats why anyone even gives a remote shit about these 3 queefs. And why most JA fans will be movin on/back? to P4P. I CANNOT wait until October for the show with Pico Train. This Nabisco Steve shit is for the birds. I'll admit this much.. I will listen to whatever garbage these cheesy fucks put out (I'm sure it'll be all over MTV, right Stevie? nudge nudge, wink wink) But the idea of it being any good is preposterous. We already know the effects of the Dave Navarroization on the half-asses sounding art-less strays was. Now this shit. I'll tell you what if its any good I'll eat a FUCKING shoe. No...I'll top that I'll eat Carmen Electra's snatch. No wait never mind, I would'nt fuck that cooz with Stephen Perkin's dick. I'll eat your snatch Navarro, you puss!!!

Hey Dave-

Haven't posted in awhile. I miss you guys hehe what up 6767! Anyway, I have a couple questions for you. Ok, well my editor still hasn't given me a yes or no for the magazine i write for...but i still write for my college paper. would you want to do something for the college paper? i really want to see what i can do. please wb if you're interested. i'd love to cover your work!

changing the subject, out of curiosity, on 'til death do us part', you & carmen seemed to have a really interesting reception. i assume you & carmen handled the finances of your wedding, but for those of us who will have to rely on our parents to shell out the dough, unless i make a ton of money asap! yes i am admitting i'm a daddy's girl...but yeah, how can you make your reception your own with respect to what your parents want & expect? i think that's so cool how individual your reception was with the band, different dancers etc. i really think it's so cool to throw a party you will remember as the ultimate fun experience. oh well, i really don't have to worry about this quite yet but i was just wondering what you suggest. do you think it would be better to combine the various interests or to maybe have a seperate room with the cool stuff? oh well, just wondering!

also, random, but i always wondered, do you or does anybody refer to carmen as "tara", her given name?

I wish you the best, Dave, and everyone on 6767. I am finally back from NY after a week with 2 funerals & catching up with friends & family...it is really strange being back in LA now. But it felt great to know home is still home... anyway, talk to you guys soon.

Take care & have a great weekend!

Hey Dave,

What do you think of Eric trying out for Metallica after Jason Newsted left the band. I honestly don't think he would have been a good fit for the band, I actually think he's too talented to waste his time with Metallica, not that I think him being with Alanis is any better, but he's not a featured star in her band like he would be in Metallica.

Dave,

Be honest, do you think that local fans will have any chance of getting into the show when you guys do decide to play, or is the guestlist going to be filled with industry types? We the faithful that visit this site, would appreciate getting into the show. Certainly more than the usual jaded industry types that don't respond and are too cool for the room.

Tre

Posted by: Tre at July 23, 2004 04:53 PM

Biblical...the video director for 'Fighter' is Floria Sigismondi....she is an amazing director with a very dark aesthetic. She has also done work for Manson. And I know that the naysayers have a right to post too...but jesus... have respect for other's wives....no need to lash out at them for something that they aren't to be blamed for. I mean...what in essence are you trying to accomplish by writing negative things and calling people names? No one cares...it won't change the state of things. It is so sad that negativity rules your perspective. Everyone is entitled to a differing opinion...but there is no need for maliciousness. No need for idiotic slander...if you have a reasonable argument...state it...name calling is so neolithic...do your knuckles drag too? I am all for freedom of speech on the board...but please...have it be an intelligent post...something constructive...if your remarks are fuelled by somebody's rumors of how the band split...let it go...no one knows what truly happened, but the guys involved. End of story.

Posted by: Cookie at July 23, 2004 06:11 PM

Dave,

I got a couple questions about when Carmen had her gig with the Ultimate Fighting Championships and I saw you at one of the shows.

1.) Do you like watching MMA? ( Mixed Martial Arts )

2.) Would it be something you would ever do?

Posted by: uzumaki at July 23, 2004 06:54 PM

I completely agree with zero13, I have some thoughts of my own about the current viciousness posted here.....

People who feel the 'need' to know & comment on why bands broke up, celebrities marriages have ended etc...perhaps need to have more in their own lives to obsess over? Then adding their constant vitriole about people they do not know & most likely will NEVER know on a personal level, is beyond pathetic.

Do they honestly think Dave cares about their opinions on the Jane's break-up? On what they think about Carmen? In their petty delusional minds, they can only hope that Dave is even wasting time reading their bitterness.

Their lives are probably pretty sad, when the most exciting highlight of their day is coming up with angry, vulgar stuff to post here.

Putting down the 'rich & famous' is their way to even out the playing field; bringing these famous people 'down to their level', humanizing the famous & getting their attention. Of course, that is not the case, these psychotic posters are only making themselves appear as the jealous, crazy, ignorant fools they truly are.

These types come to messageboards to show their suppossed 'superiority' over the other posters & basically to get the attention & harass the person whose board it is. This is absolutely not a revelation, you all know it. It's happening right now at hundreds of other boards as I type this. There's a lot of jealous idiots out there with way too much time on their hands!

Unfortunately, for ALL of US, if these posts get more harassing and/or threatening to Dave, these sorts will make it very bad for this weblog to continue in this present easy going manner. These freaks will have succeeded at what they came here for, they will have destoyed yet another decent board.

Their criticism is never constructive, it's the usual childish name calling, negativity & put-downs. But one thing is for sure, it's all about jealousy. Some 'adults' never leave the schoolyard bullying phase of their lives!

IMHO, it's really none of OUR business why Jane's split & what Dave wants to do with his musical ability. Dave is nice enough to come here & talk to us. Remember, he doesn't HAVE to. Some musicians think their music should be enough of themselves that they are giving to the world.

We should all respect the fact that Dave has been very open, kind & makes the time to acknowledge his fans on this personal level.

There's always the small lunatic fringe who have to destroy things for the rest of us. Please don't allow their cloud of negativity to ruin the great thing we have going here! Dave is intelligent enough to see through their vile heartless remarks, hopefully he won't take the bait & even acknowledge their presence.

Oh yes, Floria Sigismondi is a brilliant video director, I can't wait until she starts directing films~~!

Peace & Love,
itanja

Hey Dave, quick suggestion. If the September show comes to be how about having a drawing for a handful of guest passes on this site? That sure would spice things up! -Al

Sorry if this has already been addressed but I'd really like to know how you guys are writing the new songs ... are you contributing to the lyrics, or is that Steve's job?

Oh - and I'd still really like to know what you think of the moon landing conspiracy theory? :o)

Your Yorkie is a cutie - her name is Daisy, right? You guys would be fun to have as parents I bet.:-)

Life is stressing me a little these days - my friends really put me in a tough spot last night and I'm hoping it all worked out for everyone. My younger friend is staying with us and my sister and I took her to hang out at a friend's house and everyone was totally smashed - not normally a big deal, but she's only 14 and has pretty strict parents. My sister and I didn't drink, but I still think she was a little freaked out by it. We couldn't leave b/c the other friend kept saying it would be mean as it was her going away party. *sigh* She specifically told me it would be okay to bring the younger friend too. Long day.

so cool to see you doing something like this for the fans. i work at a music store (for absolute shit pay) because i really dig having a chance to interact with people and talk to them about what they're hearing, so it's really neat to see someone on the other end of the spectrum being so...connected? whatever, it's 2:30 in the morning, and i'm just trying to say that you're fucking awesome.

since we're asking questions, what are your thoughts on the rock star poker thing you're doing with tommy lee and john rzeznik? do you know either of them from any past run-ins? my money's on you, man.

hey dave, Do you have an MP3 of that Venus in Furs that you posted? I loved that clip! Do you have any plans to do more acting? Thanks for the constant updates.

Ta zero
thanks for clearing that up.

Hey Dave, just a couple of questions.

My first question is, have you heard of the Australian band 'Spiderbait'? If so what do you think of their music?

My other question is sorta related to Carmen being in the next Def Jam game.
My question is how well do you think Carmen would actually go in a fist fight, or something like that?
And do you plan on giving the game a go sometime?
There's some pretty tough looking people in that game.

Heh I guess all up that 4 questions... ah well.
Cool site anyways, thanks for taking the time to answer all the questions, it's been a real interesting read.

Dave, Mer de noms or thirteenth step?

"We should all respect the fact that Dave has been very open, kind & makes the time to acknowledge his fans on this personal level."

I agree with Intanja. And I think the least we can do in return is try to be considerate. I mentioned the personal requests thing before. Think about it: Dave can't put us all on guess lists. And we shouldn't expect him to. Let's appreciate the fact that he's here and not see what else we can score, k? I understand that it doesn't seem like you're asking for much, but you have to consider the snowball effect and how one request leads to many more. I just don't think it's fair to do that to him.

Luiz, just dropped you a line. I meant to tell you that I live in Philadelphia. Seems weird to be friends with someone and not have any idea where they are, right? So there you have it. :)

Where is everyone from? I'm in Fresno, California.

Posted by: Cori at July 24, 2004 07:53 AM

To Itanja: Although I totally agree with you I think that every word you waste on this dipshit is more than he deserves. Posting this kind of bullshit makes clear he only does it to get attention so I suggest to let him bable his bable and pay no attention to it.

Having said that I think this is the last I say about it.

Cynthia, you're welcome.

I've seen this nonsense before on an actor's blog.

I agree with Eric B. I think it's best not to feed them. That's what they want, after all.

Cori, I have to go to Fresno next month to visit family, they tell me it's pretty flippin hot, especially in August. What do you think?

Interestingly, I was talking about how Seattle can get pretty hot in the summer (I live 2 hours from there) We almost got up to 100 degrees yesterday, and expect it to be hotter today...

Dave, do you think the paparazzi have spies at places like the grocery store?

Although we fans like seeing pictures of you doing normal things, I don't get how they make enough money off one picture, to make it worthwile to spend every waking moment lying in wait for the picture possible

Posted by: Cynthia at July 24, 2004 08:12 AM

In the August issue of Esquire (page 86) there is a picture of whats in Carmen's pantie drawer, how cute....

:o)

Posted by: Cynthia at July 24, 2004 08:24 AM

Cynthia...I think Fresno in August is pretty much like being in hell....it is usually about 106 degrees, sometimes (often) hotter...not really the best time to visit here at all. Also, be aware...we have really, really bad air.

With that said...welcome to Fresno! ;)

Thanks for making me cancel our vacation!

Just kidding, we only plan to be there for 2 days, then we're going to San Fran for the rest. So I guess we'll survive.

(must go to work)
Nice to see the community feel here can outlast :o)

To all: Have a nice day!

New York City here!! it's not been that hot...in fact it's been in the 70's and rainy here a whole lot...even when it is sunny and hot...it never really goes above the 80's. I love the temperate climate of new york...but i like rain much more than sun. peace!
