G-Phoria

ConfusingFreAkWhat's up? Today, Carmen and I are going to a rehearsal for the G-Phoria Awards. It is like the Oscars but for video games. We tape the actual show tomorrow and it will air on August 6th on Tech TV. It will be, at that time, that my Star Wars Kid Tribute will be revealed. I am psyched as I also will be able to play the newest version of Metal Gear 3: Snake Eater. (Kind of why I took the gig!) Also, it appears we have decided on a band name. That should be up later on today. We have had so much progress this week, so much momentum that everything is starting to gel really well. Unfortunately, Chaney has to go to Canada to do an album with someone for a week. I understand though, the kid has a family to feed. Perk, Isaacs and I will continue writing and overload him with homework the day he returns! So how do we do this jam thing? Perhaps someone can decide on a tempo and build a loop or drum track. That would get the ball rolling. Let me know your thoughts on the matter. Again, thank you for the artwork, links and pictures. I will eventually post the stuff you send in and update the links on the site.

Peace Out,

Dave

Any thoughts on doing another solo album after the new band releases some stuff?

Posted by: Pete at July 30, 2004 08:30 AM

OK, so since I've only been playing guitar for four years - I wont be involved in that part, especially since we have like 5,634,5762,987 guitarists already - but vocals...vocals I'll join in on. Damn right.

Dave - thanks for answering my question...about the mouse thing...only I thought it'd be a different answer..something deeper. I had figured it's cause she's small. Woman's my height & we're pretty tiny.
Hope you have fun at rehearsal...can't wait to see the show!
Alright kiddies, talk to you all soon...I have to go to work in a few.

Ok here is my suggestion for the jam thing.

Someone use fruity loops or something to lay down a drum beat. Then those of us with recording capability (even if shitty quality) lay down a riff or a base line and then add lyrics / vocals. Dave would pick what he like... since well he is the producer of the group.

Btw dave I am currently working on something that will be a gift from the projekt msn group to you. Stay tuned to http://whitepony.kicks-ass.net:8080/ for details. I hope to have it started by the end of the night.

I can do vocals also, Hit me up, peace and love.

Heyy, Have fun at the rehersals. You and Carmen are the coolest people/couple ever. And in the song REXALL you say "never want another wife"... I was wondering if you were saying that because of your last wife, and did that apply when you met Carmen? Just thought I'd ask. Have a nice day.

song tempo: howzabout something slow and juicy?

man, it seems like everything is coming together... the secret of the star wars kid will be revealed, youre indulging in your inner video game nerd, and best of all, the band name is decided!! i cant wait for the name, well see what happens, lol. i hope its good! something edgy would be tight, but since this is dave we're talking about, i'm sure it will be.

Dave -I am so amped others are thinking the same thing about the jam thing. Yeah, you could have people submit whatever they recorded and send it to you in a file. Guitar riffs, delay loops & whatever. Maybe you could do a track of just other peoples stuff all layered out on Pro-tools. The possibilities are endless here. That would be so rad. Keep me updated on this! Thanks Brett

I will be brave for once and post my sounds on a forum where one of my most favorite celebrities may hear it and laugh at me. Oh well.

Well, first off, i am not a music expert, but I made these awhile ago when i was going to experiment on a techno collaboration with my boyfriend. But we never got to it so far.. So feel free to borrow these if they dont totally suck. I know the 2nd is pretty neat. Please note that I have no natural rhythm.. So you may not want to trust me ;)

this online song writing sounds like a blast, i would love to bring some lyrics to the party,i would love to make any lyrical contribution!!

Hmmmm, just watched Venus in 200% mode to see better on account of screen glare. My question is....

Was that Chad Smith being the "attacker" in the Venus in Furs video? (The one with the giant phallace) It sort of looked like him some how, I think it was the way he moved. but I am not sure, he didnt look very tall. Oh well, just curious.

By the way when you hold the baby in the end of the video, you look great. You look like you have a knack for kids and you'd be an awesome father!

Ps, could I possbly steal your videos and embed them into my site when I am through updating it? That way all your bandwidth isnt getting used up. =D

I'm recording something right now that'll get the ball rolling. I could just post the chord progression and the tempo and all, but I'd prefer to layer a part over it that I just wrote. Does anyone know of a program (free or with a trial period) that I can use to record my part and then layer a part over the original? Because if you do I'll post my parts really soon. Otherwise I'll just do the progression.

hey just watched your thing on ryan seacrest... are you going for more of the full beard look or just BIG ass sideburns? wow, god i love you guys. man, seacrest startles easily... just because you spit water all over his $3000 couch and priceless asian carpet, he says you scared him to death... what a loser. but hey, if i were you (man just think of the possibilities) and i was married to fucking carmen electra.................. (sorry, my thoughts kinda drifted off for a second there), i would do the same thing. god, do you ever roll over in the morning, see carmen's face, and just go "THATS FUCKING CARMEN ELECTRA!" or does it eventually wear off? man, dave... props to you for scoring carmen, and carmen, props to you for scroing dave (and killing all chances for me... lol jk) anyway... have fun guys, and you both are looking hot these days.

Hey Dave I was wondering if you have ever done any projects with Trent Reznor? Personally I think he is an amazing and emotionally charged singer who's lyrics really touch me. I know you have toured with him and what do you think of him as a person? What kind of guy is he?

1. What is the sweetest thing Carmen has ever done for you

2. What is your favorite memory of your mother?

I just found your site Dave and I am really impressed by it and your attitude.

I came and saw you at Brixton on Halloween and at Hammersmith last year with Janes and you f**ckin' rocked.

I've been a fan since trading a bag of weed and some acid for a copy Nothing Shocking when I was at school and now I'm 32 and cannot believe what a great deal I made (the drugs would have been long gone by now).

So I suppose my question for now is

"what's the best trade that you can remember making and what did you trade for it?"

An Idea for internet music collaboration:

rather than something so intense like ProTools etc..
Why not use something like GarageBand?
it's a $49 iLife purchase from Apple.

if some users don't have Macs - they can simply submit their tracks as *WAV files that can be imported to GarageBand.

Do you have an FTP site for the uploads?

Unfortunately, I only caught the tail end of the Dave & Carmen interview on Ryan Seacrest's show. Literally the last five minutes! It looked like a fun interview.

Does anyone know if this show is ever repeated? I never watch it, so I know nothing about it. It's on at 3PM here on the East Coast.

Here's a link at 'Rock On TV' for some up coming shows Dave will be featured on: http://www.musicstation.com/cgi-bin/rotv/rotv_cgi?search_type=artist_exact&sort_by=artist&type=tv&search=209346

'A DAY RUNS FROM 5 AM to 4:59 AM. ALL TIMES ARE LITERAL.'

This list is just for East Coast times, to find your area; just re-type Dave's name in the artist space. ALL TV appearances featuring Dave, in your locale, will show up.

Dave & Carmen are on the 'Dancestar Awards', on TRIO, at 9AM tomorrow. Wait until you see Dave's outfit!

I'm looking forward to seeing Dave on A&E's 'Biography' on August 3rd~!

Dave-
Who knows if you will read this. Hopefully you will. You have been my inspiration to learn and love music since I was 8 years old. I remember those days- My dad bought me Ritual de lo Hibitual for christmas that year. Holy shit. It blew my mind, Dave. There was one song in particular, that I used to just throw on repeat at night and fall to sleep to. It was "Then She Did". When I was 15, that song took a whole new meaning to me, when my mother passed away. Thats when I really started getting aggressive on the guitar, I needed an outlet and your style spoke to me in a way I dream to one day speak to another. Last December, I saw Jane's in Dallas for radio show. We had some backstage passes, and I sat in the hall for about an hour and listened to you all jam in this room. Of course, no one would let me in, but I didn't care. Listening was enough. Through a friend, I had heard that the band was splitting, and I knew this would be the last time I would get to see Jane's. Maybe forever. Then, about 3/4ths the way through the concert, I faintly heard the clean chords of "Then She Did". I had seen Jane's play a number of times, but never this song, played so personal. Thanks dude. It meant a lot.

I've only been playing guitar for about a year, so I don't have my chops yet... and like someone else mentioned... we already have a ton of guitarists here. My keyboards are all packed up to be shipped to my new address and I don't have my drums any more... BUT... I'm sure I could help out on lyrics and/or vocals... ;) Just let me know what you need and I'll see what I can come up with. I'm gonna try and get on the MSN Chat this weekend and see if anyone's on...

Somebody mentioned being able to dump audio cassettes to computer files... I'd love to know more about that, because my old band did a locally produced album years ago... I don't have the masters... only a single copy of the cassette... and I'm the only one from that band still living (yeah... that's a freaky feeling and a long story). I really want to get this thing burned to a CD before the tape wears out or falls apart from age. Anybody got any info or ideas on how to do that, please email me. Thanks!

Dave... thanks for answering my question the other day. I wasn't sure if you'd ever had any ink done in Chicago, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. :D I might wait till I can get out to Hollywood again and check out the place you recommended.

A couple of questions if you have time - The videos for Rexall and Hungry... did you come up with the concepts for those, or was it someone else?

Also, I pulled out an old Love and Rockets CD the other night because "So Alive" popped into my head and I just had to hear it. Anyway I was wondering if you'd ever worked with them on any of their projects? If so, which ones? (Think maybe you could play something of theirs on CFR this weekend? I listen in NC via the web every Saturday. You guys RULE!)

Thanks Dave! :D Have a great weekend...

Peace,
Tim

I saw and taped Ryan Seacrest - I'll try and write up a transcript for anyone who missed it. It was a very cute interview. My bf was watching with me and he said "That guy is scarily nice to his wife...I'll never be that nice to you. Just so you know." *rolls eyes* How charming. Carmen is even luckier than we all originally thought.

I'll try to get on that transcript (nice bit with the water Dave ;-))

dave!

i'm a basement musician, and here's how i get my stuff out on the web:

www.soundclick.com

my own music is posted here:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/9/zimmusic.htm

this a FREE place for bands and people like us who love to jam and share it w/others.

i suggest perhaps you open up a page for yourself (and us contributors) where you could post a drum beat, guitar lick, etc. and invite people to add on to it. you would have control, but it would be reachable by all of us--kinda like here. please check it out.

secondly, and for BradK who posted above, use AUDACITY....

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

it's a free multitrack mixer/recorder--it's all you really need to do a basic demo or even a full-on song.

i'm simply trying to push ideas here... there's also yahoo, where you could start a group, and work from there (they allow 20 megs of storage for mp3's, loops, etc.)

hope some of this helps! and count me in for sure when the ball gets rolling... i think we're all waiting for you to tell us what to work with and where to post it, ya know?

later,
zim

Hi Dave,

Some questions: Bonnie wrote:"Was that Chad Smith being the "attacker" in the Venus in Furs video? (The one with the giant phallace) It sort of looked like him some how, I think it was the way he moved. but I am not sure, he didn't look very tall."

When I first saw the clip years ago, I thought the "giant phallus" guy was Flea. Knowing that Gavin, the director, was his brother-in-law, I figured that he must have cast him in the video. So who is it?

Dave, who played the miltary man in who picks up you up? He looked familiar.Thought I also noticed Alexis Arquette in the 'Venus' video too. Dave, are you friends with any of the Arquettes?

In the US magazine interview, you posed with Zoe Cassavettes. I think you mentioned that she was a close friend of yours.

At that time, you seemed to be hanging out with that whole 'young Hollywood elite' crowd (Zoe, Sofia Coppola, Ione Skye & the music scenesters that they were married to; Spike Jonze etc.) Were you hanging with that crowd because you were dating an actress at the time?

Do you still see any of them socially? Is that how you hooked up with Donovan Leitch, through Ione?

Am I hallucinating OR did you actually play with Donovan & Ione's dad, Donovan Sr? Think it would be very cool if you recorded one of Donovan's old tracks, "Hurdy Gurdy Man" perhaps?

The whole LA music scene seems so close knit, eveyone seems to know everyone else & eventually ends up working with them. Big examples being Camp Freddy & Velvet Revolver, of course.

Though the guys are all great musicians, it seems no one seems to go outside the LA circle. Do you find that aspect limiting as a musician?

Would you, at some point, want to work with different types of non-rock musicians such as a sitarist or true jazz musicians? I loved the horn sound on "Idiots Rule". Perhaps, even do a world music album?

Never say never, who ever thought we'd see you working with Sean Coombs!

Did you ever think of working with Johnnette Naopolitano, she has an awesome voice. One of the finest rock singers in the world, she never really had her day.

You mentioned Diamanda Galas, you should definitely work with her in the future. She is a true original, just like YOU are Dave!

Peace & love~!

Did Lou Reed ask you to have the clip:

"A velvet underground song"

before Venus in furs or was that someone elses idea?

(That is what it says, right?)

No questions for now... I just want to send a "shout out" to Dave, itanja, blondimofo and the rest of the gang here; some of whom I know from other Dave/Jane's-related hangouts on the Web.

Dave--who's Chaney doing the session with?

Zim--good stuff, that acoustic song is tripped out.

With all the six-stringers on board here, it sounds like we'll need an Eric Avery or Roger Waters type to lay down a solid tasty bassline!

P and L to all.

I love it!

:) Hi Emily! Hi all!

I should add that I cannot contribute much to the board music-wise at the moment, but if you need anybody to write lyrics or prose, or if you're in need of a groovy song title or band name, count me in.

And if Carmen's Pussycat Dolls are ever in need of a new member, I'm here for ya!

Posted by: Denise at July 30, 2004 09:46 PM

same here, ill contribute anything you need in terms of lyrics or titles, i dont have the equipment to send it, and im not going to buy it, so ill do anythng else that you need.

Posted by: paperdove at July 30, 2004 09:50 PM

"i dont have the equipment to send it"-- refering to recording and sending music...

Hey Dave and all,
That's a cool idea about making music on line. Also, if anyone lives in Sydney and wants to hook up for a jam, lets do it!

If anyone taped that Seacrest interview and will be taping the Dancestar Awards on Trio tomorrow (I don't get either channel), I'd love to trade them for something off of my trade list! It's on my site at http://members.tripod.com/~tno13 and there is also a link there to the old school Spread chat room that you guys are all free to use. It may come in handy to set up this music thing, and the cool part is that there is no signup. Just type a nickname and go!

itanja:

"When I first saw the clip years ago, I thought the "giant phallus" guy was Flea. Knowing that Gavin, the director, was his brother-in-law, I figured that he must have cast him in the video. So who is it?"

(your flea idea is very interesting.. haa i never thought of that one..And I totally forgot Gavin was his brother in law.. geez. I lost my chili senses... And plus it makes more sense too Since i think chad is a bit taller than the rest of the guys, and that guy didnt seem to be.. again I cant really see it well though, since its so small, the movie that is...) ;)

Anyways, I was wondering, cuz I was cooking. Do you like ethnic food? Yeah, you can tell by my weird name.. I'm Indian.. Indian from India.

So if you wanna a nice Indian dish come over to NY, n I can cook you n Carmen something up. Yeah it's 2am n I'm too lazy to make Indian food so I'm stuck makin french fries.

You guyz rock, n keep doin the things you do. Cuz it shows how you don't care about wtf people say! Which rocks. N if you guys are ever not busy.. Which prolly will be in 50-60 years. Call me!

Randomness Rocks <3,

Dude,
I'm really glad you and the boys are going to continue playing together. I thought the Strays albums was tight and that you guys definitely had become better musicians since Ritual. (Hard to imagine as that is...) Anyway, I can't wait to hear it. I've been a fan since 86 and still love listening to you play. I hung out with you once at the Dragonfly when H.R. played a solo show. We shared a pack of smokes and talked to some women. You wouldn't remember but it was a great night for me. Love the site. Take care and God Bless.

Hi Mr. Navarro,
I'm an aspiring screenwriter with a script that I believe you would be perfect for. I still have not registered it. I live in Mexico, but I will be in the Los Angeles area on the 22nd of August to register it. I was wondering were I could send you a copy of my script, so you could trip out on it and tell me what you think.

Great name, Dave! I wish all the best for you guys with your new band! And of course for you & Carmen for the G-Phoria event.

Who came up with the name Panic Channel? Does it have a story behind it?

Gotta go now to see The Darkness as they're playing here in Finland. Eighties, here I come! Does their music work for you, man? I'm not a big fan but we don't get to see too many international big names up here so I'll settle for it. Still looking forward to seeing you guys play!

Hey Dave..Thanks for answering the fav visual artist question. I like Francis Bacon too...if you aren't already familiar, check out Marshall Arisman's work. I've always felt its closely related at its core to Bacon.
Back in the TNO days I asked if any of your own art would get to be seen to which I got a short (and seemingly annoyed) reply of "no". Is this still the case? Have you ever thought of using a work of yours for a cover?

thanks
